just about set to go now And today on the hill Mitch Spence Well it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of ERA but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness if you will We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses put himself in a position to bring that erra down because you know in the back of his mind beyond the W he wants to have a better earn run average Jackson Holiday leading things off and takes a strike First pitch 705 01 now [Applause] two ball one [Applause] there Got him swinging for the strike out pulled the string of the change up and Chris that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base and the defense breathes a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play But that’s how you do it Keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy Here’s Adley Rutmans the plate and that’s strike one All right Boo So I was scrolling through social media the other day and a video of Adley popped up It was a clip of him playing college football for Oregon State How athletic is this guy he tackled Stanford grade Christian McCaffrey Seriously what can’t Rushman do on the field the count up the middle That’s a hit So a man aboard now with one away Boo I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock One down Gunner Henderson the next to hit for the Orioles Oh he sluggers in this lineup might not be too happy about the fact that the wind is blowing in today Chris Yeah And you hear pitchers talk about how good it feels when the wind is at their back And for hitters you almost feel like beyond just the pitcher coming at you you got this other force coming against you So important to try to get on top of the ball in terms of hitting line drives You know maybe really hard ground balls with a good exit velocity that’ll get you a base hit throws it in on the run And that is that And the Orioles leave one And now the Athletics offense gets its first shot navigating through tough spots Well no doubt about it He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down Now he’s got good stuff He’s just got to be able to have confidence trust it and really go after hitters not nibble Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats to the right side and it goes just foul [Music] That’s a the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value absolutely If he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story But yeah if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100% Yeah And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the get himself a hit So next they hit for Baltimore Maverick Handley Oh that in the dirt and two in scoring position now thanks to that wild pitch Belug it’s already been a tough start to this inning as it is and that wild pitch is going to make things even tougher Two men in the scoring position now still with nobody out So this really becomes a strikeout situation on the mound Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base [Applause] swing and a ball lifted in the air Shallow right field He’s got it and that is a big first out Well those can be pretty fun as an outfielder Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down Nothing better than that You feel like a wide receiver playing out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that you know you’re going to wrap this thing up [Applause] backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days I never would have had a chance [Applause] The time run at the plate Oh that’s inside [Applause] And that’s outside That was absolute gas Triple digits on the gun It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by Foul ball left side He’ll see another 2-2 now Swinging a highf fly ball out towards right field That’s out number two
