MLB Network | NOT Yankees, Detroit Tigers is the team to beat in AL right now – Mark Derosa debate
endeavors with exclamation point last night and the Red Sox rolled over the Yankees have a look at his last 29 games offensively against New York this is how you judge greatness right in a rivalry series and Rafi always showing up and this weekend no exception okay let’s go to Detroit rubber game between the Cubs and Tigers a lot of anticipation for this series one of the best offensive in all of baseball if not the best the Cubs taking on the Tigers spencer Torqulson with a double that makes it two to nothing in the fifth nicoer now we’re going to dive into this a little bit later he’s called out he told the umpire “Boy you’re having a pretty bad day huh?” And so he gets run and we’re going to weigh in on He didn’t get it out though it was like “You’re having a” and then gone that seems a little premature from the home plate umpire but that’s just me riley Green makes it 4 nothing but Jack Flity nine strikeouts six innings of work gave up just two hits he’s 3 and 0 with an erra of.5 over his last three starts the Tigers are 23-9 at home that’s second best behind the Mets michael Bush he’s he’s hitting 4003 homers he’s got a nine-game hitting streak but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs lose two or three to the Tigers so best records in the American League look like this the Tigers 43 and 24 and the New York Yankees 39 and 25 uh after they lose two of three to the Red Sox oh look at the Astros 36 and 29 they took two of three from the uh from the Cleveland Guardians um so the American League we can we know that there is a handful of teams that could qualify as juggernauts in the National League the American League seems wide open right you got the Tigers and the the Yankees they’ve separated themselves from the pack so who would you say right now is the best team in the American League uh so it’s a great question because of certainly what AJ Hinch has done with the with the Tigers and even last year i mean the use the you his ability to use his bullpen arms I thought was uh awesome especially as we watched in the postseason uh it’s really hard to overlook what what the Yankees would start with Aaron Judge i know like all of the ups and downs and everything that can go on with that club um really accentuates how important he is you have you have allstar players you have MVP players and then you have the Aaron judges that are division changers so it all stems from him but I really think if you if you look at both of these clubs what Carlos Rodon has done I mean he’s now next level youngster Max Freed everybody was worried about the Garrick Cole as they should have been he was the ace like that is that’s a really excellent one-two punch it’s left-handed heavy for the most part the the Tiger lineup uh I love Carrie Carpenter of course Riley Green torqulson looks like he’s figuring it out um starting with Scooble like it’s I think as you as you ask this it it really is those two teams i know you’re not totally all in on on the Astros i think the the American League West is still kind of a kind of a squirrely thing you know with the way the Rangers haven’t hit i really believe in Seattle’s pitching i know that they haven’t been uh as good as they were early on so I think it is I think it’s a two horse race right now yeah it it is wide open though you get the sense that it is you know what I was thinking i was listening to you guys thinking who’s starting the All-Star game for the American League turk 95 strikeouts three locks think about that and then Max Freed complete domination yeah and look you throw Hunter Brown in into that mix as far as uh you know frontline ace type he’s in that trio and I think we take the Tigers not Tigers greatness for granted but two years ago I mean and I say this all the time we weren’t talking about Detroit past April not at all and now it seems like they’re expected to be there with with with Scooble and Flity and just this young core and this culture that they’ve created in Detroit i I think we really have to give AJ Hinch a lot of credit cuz there’s one thing having young talented players that haven’t emerged as perennial legitimate star big leaguers and now when you have a a a manager that in infuses what your job is and what you need to do to be at the top level um I I think it just it’s it’s one of those self-prophecies where you just start believing you buy in yeah yeah abs absolutely meanwhile in the National League the San Francisco Giants looking for a sweep against the Atlanta Braves who are reeling third inning however tied at one matt Olsen matt Pascers was talking about in the MLB tonight how well Matt Olsen hits during day games and case in point right there two runs will score the Braves trying to snap that losing streak have a three to1 lead but in the bottom of the fourth Dom Smith recently acquired we got some details on that in just a second ronald Akuna Jr what a catch rice couch catch out there in right field mike Shrinsky however same inning that is an RBI double giants tie the game at three it came off Spencer Strider and next batter Tyler Fitzgerald oh it’s an error on Azie Alb’s run scores 4-3 San Francisco when it rains that’s a tough error right there but yeah that had to go a few steps to his left eighth inning Lava uh ninth inning excuse me strikes out Drake Baldwin uh Giants win four-3 every game of this sevengame home stand was decided by one run and the Braves are 10 games below 500 for the first time since the end of the 2017 season this tweet here that detailing Lamont Way Jr remember uh he was put on uh he he was traded by the Giants DFA and so they send Lamont Way Jr and cash considerations to the Angels for cash considerations or a player to be named later and a small deal made between the Managian brothers perry of course the general manager and the shot caller there in the front office for the Los Angeles Angels wake up call continues to PNC Park we go it was raining all weekend in Pittsburgh to which Robert says what Phillies and Pirates pirates played Philly tough 20 years ago listen to this saturday the Pirates drafted Andrew McCutchen he bounced around always comes home his 2,200th career hit becoming the 190th player in MLB history to accomplish that jared Triolo from the University of Houston let’s go and scoring position in the bottom of the second keep Brian Hayes scores and Paul every time I read a Paul Schile it says just rip of Paul SK being great so here is Paul being great al’s going to break him down coming up seven and two/3 two hits braxton Ashkart by the way pitched in the eighth his manager said stay locked in and he did that’s McCutchen again in the bottom of the eighth and a single into right field watch O’Neal all sorts of fired up pirates lead it two to one and the Phillies with a winning run on first in the top of the ninth one out for Alec Bomb and that was it that was all pirates sweep the Phillies this weekend and here is their ace at the game yeah I mean it was it was pretty good overall um had to grind through it a little bit at times but um I was I was happy with it there are certain teams I think where you kind of have them circled a little bit and the Phillies are probably one of them because they’re they’re a team that’s you know built to win the World Series every year so pretty cool to you know be able to to throw well against them i I think we’ve been playing pretty good ball for a little bit now either you know haven’t come out with them or you know lost by a run or something like that um I’ve been happy with the baseball we’ve been playing it’s nice to you know finally get some wins out of it too so but it’s easy to go on a losing streak too so we just got to keep going paul season stats don’t look at the record that’s not the story look at the RA every fifth day out lighter it is a master class and I think we talk about presence and physical stature when we talk about Paul Schemes but he’s smart i mean he’s adjusting in real time to what the pitchers are to what the batters are doing think about this you It was only what a couple years ago LSU the heralded first pick overall gets through the system quickly last year did not make the team out of Braden rookie of the year as we know it started all-star game he’s young and the experience you talk about like getting your feet underneath you and becoming a big leager listening to him would you have had any idea if you said “Hey by the way you have no idea how long this guy’s been in the big leagues how how much of a veteran presence do you think this guy is?” Oh when he was a rookie I was at spring training he walked up and I thought “There’s Remember what I said i came back from spring training what did I say?” I said “There’s no way this guy’s going to fail he’s different yes the great ones always are well I’m sorry yeah so when you think like I’m going to be the best I’m going to be I want to be elite not just a good player not just even I’d like to make occasional all-star you think differently as you do and I think part of it I don’t know if we have a board on this what he did after the season he had last year he went out and tinkered with his repertoire folks this would be something that you would see with a guy who doesn’t throw 100 miles an hour with respect to seven pitches he he’s he’s added the sinker he’s he’s thrown in I I see the 4 and 1 half 5% like “Oh Al it’s only 5%.” Listen you throw 100 pitches and you sprinkle in five five or six curve balls to the right key left-handed batter it widens your repertoire and it also elevates your confidence cuz not every single night look the reason why you have guys now skins is just to hold next level it’s like you stay healthy and God knows what these look like in the next 5 10 years his numbers but when you have multiple secondary pitches not every single day do you have the touch the feel I don’t have a grip etc so then I go to plan B I go to plan C he’s got D and E yeah and then that just he just starts doing this it’s like it’s like beyond fun to watch him also helps to have a hundred in your back pocket right right but you know what I’m I want seven pitches you would have figured this guy’s throwing like 89 miles an hour he’s having to trick people and and Max in my ear was saying look I know pitchers w loss record isn’t what we don’t focus on it the way we did but four and six and he’s probably going to start the All-Star game yep you know well I think of I know we’re going to do a breakdown later with Ryan but you know Deg Grom that when he wanted couldn’t get any offensive support but uh didn’t figure in the decision but the Philadelphia Phillies now they have lost nine of their last 10 uh and then the news comes out over the weekend that Bryce Harper is going to go on the injured list for some wrist injury some wrist inflammation how concerned are you about the Phillies right now well uh anytime you lose what one and nine in the last 10 that’s not good but then they’re streaky right this is a streaky team then they’ll they’ll win 9 and one um my concern is is how bad is it for Bryce cuz I I know the numbers are there and and when Harper’s in the lineup they’re they’re amazing as I think 60% they’re 121 and 81 with him in the lineup we know what he means talk about Aaron Judge game changer league changer kind of player that’s what he is they’re swinging this with this club guys like this is you know there’s you know they’re penthouse or outouse at times uh I believe in them i there’s no question that I think that they’re going to be they’re going to write this no question about it um because of just how how depth this roster is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] what’s that [Music] [Music] i love a challenge [Music] [Music] [Music] i die [Music] [Music] no shadow without light mess with the bull and you get the horns [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] now I’m angry try got a whole lot of ugly in my sights [Music] i know the way [Music] i know the way [Music]

Yankees lose one home series and they lose their minds. How many times a year does Detroit get to play the White Sox? The Yankees haven't even seen the White Sox in 2025.
