Oilers Win Game 5, Eliminate Stars in Western Conference Final | DLLS STARS POSTGAME
right now I have to stop saying well it’s certainly not the way we were hoping game five would go and the series and all the things says the Dallas Stars season is over they have been eliminated from the Western Conference final in five games by the Edmonton Oilers and we’re going to break it all down and begin what’s going to be a long summer the postmortem begins now here on the DLS Stars game six when we were doing our pregame show today it wasn’t fluff that wasn’t me just crossing my fingers and trying to will it into existence i thought this team had enough in it to do it but in the end Edmonton was clearly the better team yeah I I expected a better start to the hockey game from from this team you know you’re at home your backs are against the wall of course and you know it’s a deep hole to get yourself out of but I I never imagined the way that it unfolded at the start um both of them obviously both of those goals were very preventable um so you know and again my my opinion is and I I heard Ry say at the end of the show like Edmonton was clearly the better team i don’t know you know obviously I mean they won four games to one but but I think it when Dallas is playing the way that I think they can play um I think they would give I think they’ve got a better goalender all around i I you know again you’re it’s hard going to be hard to say that you got better players in 29 and 97 i mean there’s no question about that no one in the planet pretty much has better they just in my They just didn’t make it difficult enough you get to this this stage of the playoffs and you know it’s the war of attrition we know that all the way through but I I just don’t think they made it hard enough on on their best players when you look at the game tonight it fin kind of at least they got some goals but it it felt like even after the wretched start and we’ll get into all of that when they got going they got back within a goal twice but each time the either a play by the Oilers a a bounce went Edmonton’s way some of that is is working and earning it some of it is is what they call the the hockey gods looking either kindly or negatively against you edmonton seemed to get a lot of breaks on those key moments and also made a lot of plays i don’t know if they got breaks but I you make your own breaks you know in this kind of stuff i I just I just think that they they just continually chase the game you know i mean again right from the start yeah you get a little close but and and I thought really Yeah it looked like you had Skinner from game one of Skinner you know that that goal by Robo that gets him close that’s just god awful you know and so that’s got to give you some kind of life on the bench going now that’s the guy that we probably know and but you got to be smart about it you have to be smart about how you push and how you do things you have plenty of time and it didn’t take long and next thing you know you know there’s a guy over there that makes a difference and it’s funny because not funny but it’s interesting that Jason Robertson got out of his funk and started to put some pucks in the net but we couldn’t get enough from everybody else yeah that it’s good for Robo but you’re going to be a big time guy you got to make big big time moments you know instead of just getting you close get leads and get there um so yeah I mean he comes up and he scores a few goals and but but you needed him you needed a lot of guys it’s just not a robot you needed a lot of guys earlier you know um the five on five play was a big thing for him in this in this round they they were chasing they weren’t chasing the series after game one but after that they were chasing the series and the games all right we’re going to go through all the goals here in just a minute but you know what’s worse though than all this what’s that is all these guys sitting in their locker room right now and they all got their gear off and not off they got their helmets off they probably have their skates on and they’re sitting there and nobody’s probably saying anything to hopefully nobody’s saying anything to anybody and they’re kind of replaying this whole thing and while that’s all going on you have a team out there on your ice in front of whatever fans are left celebrating that’s what’s worse not quite as bad as us not not having an one more away game where we were going to have a an hour happy hour at Happiest Hour where we’re going to be able to have a few cocktails little salty about that aren’t you i’m a little salty about that part i was kind of hoping that we were going to be able to do that one more time have a watching little event but I’m just telling you it’s and there there’s some guys some young guys should be asked to go out there and watch that nobody would agree with that you need to go out there and watch and hear what’s happens and then remember that next year remember that at the start of the season it’s a it’s it’s not a good thing so we’re going to go through all the goals but I think we should talk about the goalending choice of Pete Dbor’s first period which is pulling Jake after the second goal after he called the timeout and putting in Casey to Smith and look the Stars I don’t think lost the game because of Casey to Smith but I just wonder was that the right move at the right time clearly it wasn’t because of Jake’s play early on and it was because the team had a just wretched start to this one i I think it I understand it and and the first thing I said to these guys upstairs I said that’s not on Jake now that second goal you know the five hole one i think we see Jake make that save again it’s it’s not a 50- goal scorer that that you know it’s Yanmark you know and and so he Well the irony is that how many times have we seen TS Yanmark over his career do all those great things in every facet of the game except for finishing scores that one that’s to me that that might be a combination of things for Pete i I purpose and I I said to the guys again I said that’s not on Jake the reason that’s there you’re slowing the game down and and I would think that he somebody would have gone up to him and said “You’re going back in in the start of the second period or it could even be sooner than that.” That that’s what I thought was going to happen the other thing is So did he need to do that and call his time out at the same No that’s what I was just going to say is with Jake coming out of the net there there’s an opportunity for a goalender knowing what’s going on you kind of take your time the other goalender takes his time it’s basically like a timeout get over the boards this guy comes off you may have the two goalenders meet jake didn’t even acknowledge Casey on the way but but you guys I I think that you guys would know that and and and somebody could have relayed that M yeah this is not cool the funny thing is is Ray’s already standing on a stool over here and Jake’s bigger than him just Jake’s sitting in a chair but but I I think that what should have happened there is is those two guys you know they they have their thing they’re they’re kind of kill some time and they’ll allow you to get away with it pete can have a conversation with his players you tell them all turn around and you can tell him this isn’t on maybe Pete thought it was because of that that second goal i don’t know but but I I really said and I said I thought he was going back in at the start of the second period i would have been for sure well again I it’s more of a wakeup call and it’s a way to save your timeout and get the attention of your players and what you’d really want is you want your players up and down the bench going that’s not on our goalie this is us we got to do that he’s bailed us he’s got us to this point and and we have to do somehow we have to respond for him that’s that’s what I expected to happen but obviously not in the end and we’ll talk about more when we do our recap the Stars were one of the last four teams technically because of the schedule the last three teams left standing competing for this year’s Stanley Cup they’ve advanced to the third round which is a very difficult thing three years in a row which is also very hard to do and yet I think probably uh understandably most fans will feel disappointed not just because they felt this team was better than that but but how they went out in only five games to the Oilers not pushing them more i look I got it wrong and I picked Stars in seven not because I just believed that the Stars could do it but I also thought this was going to be a back and forth you know razor thin margin kind of series and essentially it was except for it wasn’t because all those razor thin margins went the Oilers way or they they made them go their way and so there’s a lot of question marks that are left here with this Stars team now that unfortunately we’ll have until September to digest and obviously it’s good luds as for an organization to be knocking on the door three straight years going to the playoffs rotating and turning over the roster some big guys like Joe Pavvelski no longer involved but still they make it to one of the hardest places to get i mean first second third that’s really tricky to do but it is going to feel very unfulfilling for everybody because going into this year based on last year everybody’s standard was I think you had to get to the Stanley Cup final to feel like you improved on last year do you think that’s fair that with what the standard was high expectations because that’s really an an insanely high bar i I I mean again if if you’re part of management you have to start to question if we have the right makeup to play have a team that go to the playoffs because you’re you know again are you what what you are in the regular season is generally what you are throughout the year i mean you play 82 games to get ready to go deep into the playoffs and I don’t I’m not sure if it’s a team that’s you know I think they could use some more what game do you think it was during the regular season when Pete Dbor made a comment “We need to get bigger along the walls.” It was a while ago i can’t remember now i remember how much of an impact it made on you and we talked about it on the show but I I mean I feel like it was well before the trade deadline i mean it was it was sort of a public message of “Hey we need some help.” This was a comment made in an interview that was supposed to go up there i think so and I know that they’re close and they they talk and all that kind of stuff but and what he meant was we need to get bigger not for the next 30 games of the regular season we need to get bigger at this time of the year and they added Ranson and they added believe it or not at the deadline and they added Randon it’s hard not to add him he’s one of the best players in the league right it’s hard to pass up and and do that but Ranton is not a guy that you see banging around in front of the net not often at both i mean he does bang around along the boards he he works that’s fine but you don’t score goals from home but you’re right he doesn’t get to the the front of the net very much they were not hard enough to play against when it when it comes to that do you think it would benefit the stars to have a player that can get to the net front to play off of Miko Rantin to have somebody that could bulldoze i think they should have one on every line that’s my thing like like a Zack Heyman style player to to be the one that does the dirty work or you know we always talked about Marchman Duchain Sean in the regular season being such a great line because Marchment would get in on the forche go to the front of that do all the dirty work so that the playmakers and did he do that during the playoffs as much as we you he didn’t at least not as effectively I think he I didn’t find him at the front of the net enough and he’s one of the guys that I think is okay doing that you know what I mean and I think he should be able to bully his way there hey offense wins the games defense wins the championships and I think what what Edmonton did we’ve seen them yeah that the goalender laid up a bad goal here and there at the other side I’m talking about but they play defense now they play well structured to the neutral zone coming back into their end and they pack it in in front of their net they make it difficult to score goals and that’s what they do and I just wonder if if anything will change to where you say “Okay here’s who we are do we need to tweak this a little bit do we got to get a little bit more harder to play against because a lot of times this year we come out of games and we’re like man they got out hit two to one they got to out hit three to one and and we kind of brushed it off as well they have the puck a lot and to some extent that’s true like who who was one of the guys that was at the front of the net quite a bit tonight the one guy that hasn’t played in the playoffs number 22 Maverick Bourke you see him in there front front of the net he would bang and crash around and unfortunately he’s not the biggest guy because occasionally he’d get kind of tossed but he wasn’t afraid to go to the net front right you know who else went to the net blackwell blackwell well again and and so does Steel i mean again those are the guys that and and you you’re right with Col Collins not the biggest guy out there but but he has he has it here to know that he will go there and pay the price and fortunately he doesn’t play the 22 or 25 minutes like some other guys do all right we have a lot more to get to let’s do our recap we’ll look at some of the goals and part of the reason we’re not going to go into every talking point right now is unfortunately we have a few months now to break down roster construction what we do next year coaching decisions all the things that we will talk about in the weeks and months ahead price guaranteed all right let’s do a little analysis of this game and Luds it starts with a really really PU smelly first period or at least the start of it dallas comes out and they take a penalty maverick Bourc first game of the series first game of the uh was it his first of the playoffs i think he played one other game am I completely No he played two so this is his third he played a couple early in the in the playoffs I think against Colorado but then he hasn’t played since so he takes a high sticking penalty careless because of where what he’s trying to throw his stick over at i don’t know what he’s doing he’s got it in his left hand and he’s looking back and he’s just kind of coming back and he’s going to turn around you just looked at a defenseman straight in front of you i just thought it was a careless act with your stick and did he think he was going to do it no but the normal thing is is when you’re turning you grab it with two hands you turn and go back and so it is very nonchalant and unfortunately it catches a bushard in the chin there yeah i mean it wasn’t a it wasn’t a violent high stick i thought it was crazy that the referee went over to check to see if he was bleeding or not because that would have been laughable but it was a high stick and of course Luds we talked about losing Zack Heyman and what a big loss that is for the Oilers and unfortunately for the Stars now it’s more of a big loss for their Stanley Cup final rematch with Florida but Cory Perry fills his role quite well now he’s not the same player that he was in his prime but he can still he’s a big body can still get to the front of the net and he did exactly that as they scored two and a half minutes in wide open in front i mean the passing by Dryside McDavid were great but how can you leave a man wide open at the top of the crease i say when you talk about Carrie or Cory Perry being able to get to the front my grandma could have got to the front of the net like this is Well she is a good skater no she’s not but regardless th this one here even still and we’ve got a shot here of Wyatt like it looks like he’s chasing back on dry sidle here but actually Wyatt was underneath him and Dryidle makes a little move instead of Wyatt going and pinning and seal he’s one of the guys that you want to take out of the play Wyatt skates right past him allows Dry Cidle to come back down and then Essa come has to come over here to Dry Cidle here and and look at Cory Perry number 90 here now McDavid’s got the puck in the middle CC takes off to go over to that side again i don’t have a tough time with that one as much as I do with Granlin and Wyatt coming back sort of supposed to keep an eye on McDavid yeah but I’m saying neither one of now what Cece should have done right here is he should have turned around you got you got to have your head on a swivel but Wyatt and Granlin have no urgency to come back to the most dangerous guy on the ice no it’s not McDavid it’s not Dry Cidle but look at where Cory Perry standing i mean it to me you collapse and and I know they’re an aggressive kill and they have a different way to kill but again back to the most dangerous area on the ice now wasn’t a great goal was a pass and it ends up going over Jake’s I think it was his left shoulder on this one over the gloves but again it it’s Cory Perry and there’s a 40-year-old that beat three guys back to the front of the net yeah and he still has some fire in him to play the game i know that Stars fans at this moment probably don’t care but uh I was sitting at the media availability this morning when he was out there with McDavid on the podium and one of the Edmonton writers asked a question about him being uh north of 40 and he gave him that sort of you know he smiled a smirk but looked at him like why you got to keep bringing that up right you know the hey I’m I’m not so old what do you you know he reminds me of a guy that would will play as as long as his body allows him to do it and I so far it is and again this is the Stars postgame we’ll focus on that but I don’t think this is Cory Perry’s last year oh I don’t either i think he’ll keep playing for another couple years at least and the way he plays and how he goes about his business he doesn’t have to be one of the fastest guys on the ice he goes to the hard areas bring him back he goes to the hard areas of the ice they had him you think that that was a mistake to let him go based on the fact that he was a fourthline guy that he’s the kind of guy that you don’t have that does that kind of stuff and that guys like that they’ll drag other guys into that area they’ll drag teammates into the fight so I yeah I I love the way he plays and and I’m sure they’re going to want him back and it’s going to be what his fourth fifth trip to the finals you know since back in 08 or whatever it was so he ends up being on the right teams you know they they’re worried about they’re worried about touching you know do we cut touch the Clarence Campbell and all that kind of stuff maybe they ought to just not even bring him along because he’s not been very good luck teams making it you think they should just cut him from the team right now it might be the way to go but no with Zack out of the lineup they need that you can’t do that now yeah go ahead John we have a rather large super chat how about that from T Farmer a 99 cupier followed by a 99 cupier i can’t i just can’t pulling Otter is the worst decision in this franchise since I don’t know when that game is tied in the second without that move unbelievably desperate unbelievable desperate move in which you shake the confidence of your franchise goalie not saying Pete should be fired not saying Pete should be fired i I I I I agree i I don’t think that I think Jake got It’s not about pulling him it’s about putting him back that’s what I mean jakeer’s got to get back in like this is nothing against Casey De Smith he’s a fine goalie and I I’m happy to have him as your number two have we seen ever since Pete’s been here a very calm in control kind of guy right in his pressers on the bench he doesn’t almost all 99% of the time very keeps us cool he lost it there and I I have thought again I can understand it through some of the pressers too little short doesn’t like some of the questions and testy i I’m thinking you’re feeling the pressure of well not only feeling the pressure but you’re expecting more out of your team whatever you want you think he’s getting impatient with answering some of the same questions over and over again about death scoring and I mean that comes with territory to and and well compensated for it too by the way but but to every day be asked about when is Mero Hinnan coming back when is Jason Robertson why did you do this why did you do that every coach gets that right right i just felt like that that maybe that move and again who knows i don’t I don’t we don’t know what’s in his head but maybe at that moment maybe he was just so upset with the team with the one of the goals that went on Jake that he I mean he screamed i mean he was like he was not in his normal control so I it just feels like that’s been bubbling well that’s a big time super chat from T Farmer we’ll get to all your super chats in the third segment but when it’s that hefty of a price tag we kind of have to step down for it so uh yeah Luds it didn’t get better though because after the first goal went in on the Cory Perry power play tally Matias Yanmark scores to make it a two nothing lead and this didn’t get any better because it happened so quickly it was at 709 and it was about 4 and 1/2 minutes later but it came on a stretch pass from Jake Walman a nice bump by Victor Arson and a complete defensive breakdown by the Stars were they in a horrible line change or what that’s called wholesale changes like when you see like there was a shot that John couldn’t get here but when you look from behind with their passes coming from if you look from their net out you’re kind of wondering where did everybody go so and and Walman’s got his head up here he he sees exactly what’s going on and he just realizes I got to get it and turn it up now all of a sudden you’ve got everybody changing off the ice you got guys still going off the bench you got guys going into the bench yet i I don’t know what happened and then for me Essa got a little overzealous here i mean when when he starts to move over here who’s that Arverson down here when he starts coming over here to Arvidson he opens up the middle of the ice i mean typically Ess looks around he He wasn’t moving his feet either no he just he there was no reason for him to go over here again when when you have this kind of situation somebody’s made a mistake here kind of like four guys did but you got to try to find a way to buy time so the longer he would stay in the middle of the ice Arverson probably keeps the puck that allows the rest of the guys that are coming off the bench and coming in to get back into the defensive zone he doesn’t do that and and then obviously Yanmar gets it and and he makes a really nice move i just didn’t expect it not to be saved I guess but but maybe maybe Otter saw something different than Well it was a fivehole goal good move it’s two nothing and it’s one-on-one and those things do happen they call the timeout jake comes out and this is again 709 into the game your cornerstone goalie is pulled and you use the timeout we talked about it at length and wasn’t there there was a timeout and Jake was kind of coming over and he went back he was starting to go back to the net there’s actually that’s when he yelled to Casey to jump into the net and Jake kind of turned and he looked and then Casey came out and you know how goalies normally do they come out and they kind of fist bump you on the way by well Casey did but he didn’t have a partner that was fist bumping him back so you could tell that Jake was upset you know understandably so just to add some context you could see it from our press box location as soon as they called for the timeout they signal for it pete said something to uh Steve Spot and all of a sudden we saw Casey to Smith turn around and go to get his helmet and start to get ready then they you know Pete calls the whole group together jake skates over toward the bench they’re all doing their thing and then that’s when So Casey knows he’s already been told to get ready he’s going in i don’t think anybody said anything to Jake so when they break the huddle he starts to go back and that’s when and they caught it on the TV broadcast and it was it’s been going the rounds on Twitter it was basically “Hey uh you mean the red face or the lip reading get the something out of here.” And that’s when he knew he was coming out of the game yeah and he Yeah it it was an awkward situation uh so Sean tweeted something that I think is going to make Luds explode uh Pete Dbor said Aud has lost six or seven games to Edmonton in the past two years and had let up two goals on two shots in an elimination game so quote status quo wasn’t working he just tweeted that yeah that wasn’t just shaking up the the the forwards and defense that was okay so again frustration I I sent and LS that leads to a bigger question because Pete Dbor comes to Dallas now it’s his third year with plenty of history of not necessarily managing goalenders as well not good history right i would say notorious history and so I I just think that there’s a there’s maybe it’s the bubbling over point and not getting getting past a couple rounds and not having success and and being so close so many years he’s done this he’s taken a team to the cup final before he’s taken you know a couple times he’s gone the Western Conference final many times he’s lost to Dallas with Vegas fueling the fire here well and and perhaps we are but that also that comment from Pete that Sean tweeted out and we’ll have to ask Sean if he has any extra tone or context when he’s here but that’s the f Look I’ve said adamantly up to this point Pete Dors is a star head coach next year right i just wonder how many hockey minds that watched and everybody’s watching this would disagree with him not going back in around the you know say that he shouldn’t have gone back in no I think or agree with us that he should go back in no he that he should have gone back in that’s your guy well I thought so i mean he’s your number one right it’s not like you know again all due respect to sit here i I’m not going to because I I don’t know like I said it’s not a 1A versus a one i I can understand where he’s coming from there too you know why well because every what he said is true so he sees the two goals go in and he goes he just didn’t have it and he sees them every day and by the way when that did happen and see Ally right there I was not on the fire Pete Deboragen until seeing that quote that’s the first time hearing that I start to wonder if you have a disconnect between your goal you just extended and your head coach and that is a concern because you need Now look they’re adults they could go and and patch it up and be fine but that’s a that’s a bit of a problem and it but but at the end of the day Pete’s not playing the game the guys they didn’t quit on the coach no I don’t believe that so that’s my point you know there’s there’s teams that quit on coaches and it happened with the Rangers this year they they quit on Liby and for whatever whatever reason it is but but they and I don’t think that’s the case here so if you know with all this stuff going around right now if that was also part of it that if anybody or your general manager assistant whatever gets wind of that through a player players well that’s a little bit more concerning i don’t believe that’s the case with this group my feeling is I don’t again I’m going to beat that one i’m not happy i’m not satisfied i don’t like the way they play certain situations because I think that you are what you are in the 82 games you play leading up to well we’re going to talk more about man-on-man this summer i’m not going to because you’re not satisfied the only man on man I’ll be talking about this summer is you guys from the boat but you’re not satisfied that that’s getting them to where they need to go over the hump well that means we’re going to have Look at Look at what Edmonton did edmonton has been one of the I wouldn’t say the worst teams they’ve always kind of look at how they played and they didn’t even really play it right but they basically said they looked like Vegas we’re not we’re not wellies especially their DMAT they look they look we’re not leaving the most dangerous area of the ice whether it’s right or wrong they’re going to have to come how many shots do they block and just make it difficult things like that that wasn’t them and I’ll die on that hill when you play that way who came into this postseason with over a thousand games in the NHL and zero playoff games played one the first one against LA it did not go well for the Oilers he was sumearily scratched ever since but because of the Zack Heyman injury Jeff Skinner got a chance to come into the lineup tonight for his second career NHL playoff Stanley Cup playoff game and he scores on a rebound on Casey to Smith in the low slot trent Frederick had a shot there was a goal mouse scramble a puck comes loose he puts it I think was it five holes past Casey well the puck didn’t really come loose so So I don’t know maybe these guys are buddies now uhoh i will just say if this was Jakeer in here he wouldn’t have punched the puck back out into the slot so when this puck comes to Casey which is basically right on his stick that was the Frederick shot right here he ultimately just punches this puck right back out into the slot where there are a bunch of people players hockey sticks hockey players and then ultimately it rattles around and squeaks through and there’s a great shot from overhead of it and I I was like what what were we do it was almost like it was a a panic thing like and I wonder if he actually wanted to put his hand over the top of it and accidentally hit it with his blocker glove hand whatever it may be so yeah it was just one of those kind of goals where you’re probably going to shake your head for a little while that third goal in 8 minutes and 7 seconds was the end of a wretched start to the first period and I thought Luds at that point I was getting vibes of 2016 game seven at home against St louis in the second round where Dallas the number one seed looking to try to finish off the Blues and move on to the conference final gave up three first period goals kari Leinan was just an absolute I mean he had stood on his head in game six to get them in St louis to get him back to Dallas and then was like Swiss cheese and there was the third goal which I think was in the last minute of the period was a beachball shot from the blue line that went in that just it it deflated the building and it turned into a route and I remember on that one Les and this is maybe the the argument to Pete Dbor was after the second goal that Ki led up in that game you said he doesn’t have it and maybe Lindy Ruff should have pulled him then and maybe that they could have rallied and got the third one ended it it was like the knife in their soul well I don’t know if that would have necessarily changed things tonight but Skinner scores three nothing and then Jason Robertson gets a goal and it’s his third straight game in the playoffs he got the one that he didn’t even know he got credit for then he scored a nice power play goal in game four in Edmonton well then he scores a five on five goal that all started because of a what I have to say a very rare Edmonton defensive zone turnover where Kulak hit would you call it egregious oh it was absolutely outrageous Leds because I mean Kulak literally cleared the puck off of Conor McDavid’s backside and he’s been so good koulak’s been so good for him defending and especially while Ekcom’s been out but yeah it was it it was a a tough turnover so uh but again good good for Robo you can see it the this is so typical of goal scorers you know Robo and I all the time you’ll hear it like when you’re having a hard time scoring goals instead of getting further and further with that you get closer to the net so Robo gets one that goes off his foot he said he didn’t even realize it that gets him going a little bit of confidence next time he comes back he scores a a goal on the power play beautiful shot on Skinner last game tonight he gets in there and all of a sudden his confidence is bubbling and he finds a hole on Skinner and the place wakes up again and it went from a mortuary to suddenly there’s a chance and he felt it was early enough in the game that was at 11:40 of the first period from Wyatt Johnson who didn’t create the turnover but Luds pounced on it made a nice play to get it to Robo robo walked in and beat Skinner and he just felt like something was going on well then they took a penalty as Sam Steel was called for high sticking at 1241 and it was high sticking and again kind of a careless stick play i think it glanced off his visor there certainly wasn’t uh any injury to it but you got to control your stick and Thomas Harley had a gradea short-handed chance i was it Rantin that made the pass to the high slot and Harley one timed it skinner made a really good save sam was sitting next to me and said “Boy if he elevates that is that a goal?” And I go “No sometimes you just have to say great job by Skinner because that could have really gotten the stars going.” Yeah a lot of lot of just abouts yes so you end the first period it’s 3-1 but you feel like there’s a chance casey De Smith got maybe lucky maybe made a great save on that Evander Kane wraparound first thing in the second period where he got lucky he actually would hit both insides of his knees basically he when he came across the crease he actually missed it it went underneath them and then it kind of rattled between his pads but but you know what goalenders know and it’s funny with all that padding on how they can actually sense it or feel where the puck is because immediately he he looked like a frog from Yeah and so you know and again what he does is he takes his left leg which is the leg that was on the goal line and he kind of pulls it out a little make sure that he when he’s squeezing his legs together it doesn’t slip into the into the net there he did make a really nice stretching save on a dry sidleet one-time from the right circle to Smith and then it was Maverick Bourke that started to get sort of a turnaround dry didn’t even get credit for a shot tonight really nope i mean that was clearly on frame so go figure i don’t know what they’re looking at luds uh Maverick Bourke got the turnaround because Dallas they should check with you before they put their stats up i mean I can’t do everybody’s job for him but yes they should you know what it is and I I don’t think this is a lot of times if they deem that a shot is going wide even if it hits the goal well they’re pulling them off the board now they call those missed shots and I feel like that’s if it Oh so you’re going against the way the betters are now like I mean that guy that on shots I don’t want to be get in the middle of that that’s their big thing is they’re taking all those shots away because they’re technically not shots on net and the guys that are like John that are going under 22 and a half shots or whatever he does right and they are trying to audit that as tightly as we are going less than and by the way if you rode with me on tonight’s sleeper picks uh you are $4667 you see how I segueed you into that cuz I heard you say something earlier you won you’re a winner tonight i am a winner so Maverick Bourke goes to the net a couple of times he I think he turns them around they they get a good shift uh with Marchment Sean and Duchain marchment is gets a tip play and then they start grinding then Bourke pops over he goes to the net a nice setup pass but a save by Skinner he gets his own rebound then he drives to the net and draws a penalty stars get a power play and after Ranton had a really good chance this play by Thomas Harley to set set up the pass to Robertson to then into hints for the goal I thought was incredibly composed because he has a shot block LS but he has the patience of mind to wait and get it back and not just panic and and try to drop back and that’s what I mean right here walk us through it well really it starts prior to this and it’s because of Harley again shooting the puck and when he shoots the puck everybody knows that that are penalty killers they have to adjust and so they have to get into shot lanes so now all of a sudden they break he breaks down the coverage by shooting these now all of a sudden you have somebody that goes he’s shooting it again fortunately it comes back to him and there’s the little tic-tac-toe play great pass by Wyatt and again Rope gets it a little luck here hits a stick and goes upstairs but regardless it’s it’s a great play and I think it all starts with Harley even prior to what we see here because he was getting pucks to net and what happens is the way that these guys are playing they’re trying to block everything and help out their goalender but now all of a sudden they got to tighten up and when you tighten up now you got to spread back out when they get the puck and that’s what opens up the seam in the middle of the ice and that made it a 32 game and the belief was in the building you must you better believe it that place was rocking when Hint scored on the power play probably on only one foot that he could feel by the way Luds pretty good i mean the two games that played after the injury he looked really pretty good for him yeah right yeah but he’s got he’s got time to heal now yeah he sure does uh two minutes later Conor McDavid stars are buzzing they’re going offensive zone it’s a shot block off Echome and again I don’t know if this is just uh you got a good from an Oilers perspective a good bounce for the Stars a bad bounce or what but you know Dallas has all the momentum they’re pushing to tie they have an offensive zone shot and not only is he get blocked the rebound kicks out to maybe the one guy on the planet that Roe H can’t track down yeah but but but again I mean credit to playing the right way in your own zone and Ekholm comes back into the series gets in a shot lane nothing wrong with what Harley did i mean he’s trying to take that shot he’s in a good shooting spot on the ice echol does enough just to get it and it Yeah it ricochets out there and you’re right for it to go to that guy and we say that guy there’s a reason these guys aren’t lucky you know what I mean like they they just they know where to be they’re around certain areas of the ice and I’ll tell you what though when you look at where it originally started and where Hint was he almost caught it he did and I w I was talking to the guys upstairs and Casey looked like he was out out of the net and and everybody was like “Well why did why did Ro reach around the back of McDavid?” And I and I said “Because Rope I know what he would do with this speed.” And I think what happened is when when McDavid is coming in he’s coming in on the right hand side of that not even down the middle of the ice he’s going to see what Casey’s going to do and and if and if Casey even tries to come back to the middle of the ice I think McDavid hangs on to it a little longer and the reason Rope comes around the back is that’s what he would have done if Casey’s in a spot and he pushes back to the middle of the ice Roe would have pulled it and he would have went a little further to the left hand side of the net take his time and then tuck it on tuck it in and I think what Hint thought is here’s he is I see the angle that he’s going he’s got all the ice to the left i’m gonna try to reach around and when McDavid does this and comes over he’s gonna try to jack his stick and what happens is Casey is just he’s on the post and so McDavid didn’t even have to pull it he was basically easy enough to put it you know from center to the side where Smith was so you couldn’t even get a stick on that guy that guy yeah that guy that guy’s pretty good that would be the game-winning goal the Stars came out in the third period and got one back in the first minute it was Jason Robertson’s second and Luds this was a a stinker skinner this was not a good goal to give up from even though Robos suddenly found a bit of a hot touch that shouldn’t go in for an NHL goalie no not at all well again this is kind of the Skinner that you saw a little bit of in game one and yeah and he knew right away he his his body language told the story and he knew it didn’t touch him and where it run to but but I’m I’m just wondering is a Robo scored a couple goals over his shoulders over his glove i wonder if he thought he was going high because it’s probably the last place he thought he was going from out there was right along the ice like that well Robertson second of the game he has uh goals in three straight games four goals and you’re going yes there’s one of your big guys starting to heat up as I said at the top of the show unfortunately the other ones weren’t following suit even then Luds 4-3 first minute you’re going great that’s what they needed to do now they have a whole period to try to chip away get the tying goal we’ll take overtime you can kind find a way and it doesn’t matter how you just find a way to get to game six and it was an almost immediate response it was less than three minutes later and the Evander Kane pass from behind the net goes in off of Essendell’s skate and And you know why Kane does this when he comes behind i don’t believe that he’s aiming for Ess’s skate and some people say “Why is Essa there?” That’s where you go you don’t expect this to go in off your skate but the reason he’s throwing this out here is because the identity of this team is there’s always people driving to the front of the net so Kane thinks I’m going to get it to the front of the net and you look at it this is one of the great times when Dallas has got numbers i mean they’ve got everything covered here i like that you see people you got six off the ice and you’re ready to go but unfortunately for Essa hits him in the skate and that is pretty much it and then you you can I don’t know what it’s like in the building but you can just feel the air gets sucked out of it on that goal so I was already here for that one but it was the same with the McDavid goal right because the the building is just going and going and you can feel the comeback is there the team is on their toes and then it’s Conor McDavid breakaway i’m sure that one was even worse because third period own goal you name it sean is right on his way up the elevator we’re going to series about trying to play with the lead um and obviously we’re in a two nothing hole right away um and and you know what I I didn’t take that lightly and I didn’t blame it all on Jake but you know the reality is is if you go back to last year’s playoffs you know he’s lost six of seven games to Edmonton and we gave up two shots on on two goals in a you know uh an elimination game so you know it was partly uh to spark our team and wake them up uh and partly you know knowing that you know status quo had not been working you know and that’s that’s a pretty big sample size all right Sean you’re in the room you were watching him say that what was your impressions as you heard what he just said um that is his best legal ease of Jake Outinger lost the series for us that is his best and I’m not saying that’s when you heard him say the well part of it was to get the team going to spark there was a long pause and knowing I already knew the quote so I was thinking about it it almost sounded like he was deciding whether or not he was going to go there or not correct and then he did it’s the as I said it’s the best legal ease and this is a someone who has a law degree so he has he spent four years studying how to make it sound or however long it takes to get a law degree It’s okay um he’s going to get a job on CNN or Fox whenever he it is CBC yeah it was uh and I know having done some other intrepid reporting and talking to some other people around it’s not just it’s not just his his statement is is certainly a belief that in this series the biggest different is difference is Jeff Skinner outplayed Jay Ger that is a big belief for that coaching staff and Steuart Skinner sorry Jeff Skinner did outplay Jakeer tonight he did actually but he didn’t score on him that’s true so here’s my question Sean where where is with that happening in the heat of the moment and all this other kind of stuff where does that is there anything in that relationship with that happening there with you and your your guy goender wise well let’s put it this way and this is just we got to we can be factual on this show right yeah like Pete has wore a lot of things on this show but Pete has killed relationships with other goalies before mark Andre Flurry was one of the easiest humans in the world to get along with and as much as the whole sword through the back the whole sword through the back like that was a Sam has joined us hi Sam that’s where the agent is the one who delivered the the scudm missile of the tweet but it definitely came from Mark Andre Flurry’s feelings about Are are you saying he uses them as scapegoats yes oh see how Led’s ask a good question for one time and I didn’t know if that was even kind of harsh saying it that way let me ask you this you’re asking Sean right yes okay good listening to you explain this as we’re talking this out my first thought is this is not something that came to him at the podium no not at all he this is something that has been simmering under the surface for a while which is amazing in the sense that if you look back at the last series Jake got the reason they got past the Winnipeg Jets he was their MVP he was their MVP the first round mo Rantin was unbelievable toward the end of the Colorado series and the start of the Winnipeg series but Jakeer got them past the Jets yes he did he was fantastic he hasn’t been bad in the conference final his numbers don’t look very good i think the team in front of him is more of the biggest issue yeah but Stuart Skinner has better numbers no the issue is they’re not actually in front of him and he’s not he’s got to win well yeah that too they’re kind of all out here and so that goes back to my point pete Dbor has been thinking about this for a while he just said it out loud correct what does that mean what’s that mean yeah what do you think that means going forward i know this is speculative and we don’t know yet what does it mean going forward because here I’m going to tell you this i can tell you what it means going forward be this is the I told Okay I want you to say but hold on i want to share the thought I said earlier because we’ve talked about this a lot and Sam you and I were having this conversation as well i said up until tonight Pete Dbor is going to be your head coach next year he has one year left on his deal jim Nil doesn’t fire coaches during their their term unless there’s some sort of egregious non-hockey thing and then I heard that quote from Sean and I said well from Pete Dbor I just reported it i I read the quote the quote that Sean tweeted out and then we’ve heard it and I said that’s the first time I’ve questioned my take that Pete Dbor is definitely the head coach of the Stars next year am I wrong no you’re not wrong because one of them has eight years of job security starting next year starting next year and another one has one year and uh I don’t know and on top you like that comment well on top of that try again on top of that the general manager that signed your goalender to eight years correct here’s that comment mhm which is their guy that it’s their goalender that they believe in mhm does that put a little Oh there’s there’s definitely there’s definitely thoughts about this because there is Kayla wants you to give us your take she is anxiously She sees your smirk and you have thoughts kayla said “Give us some takes Sean i’m here for it.” So the floor is yours well I mean I I still think Pete Dbor is the coach going in to next season because Jim is that loyal that is how Jim Jim does not fire coaches and Jim has been the he has been loyal to a fault at times right when it comes to certain players and their extent and their time there and so unless and Jim in the past has been able to win that conversation with his owner with Tom Glardi tom Glardi is not nearly as a patient man i was just going to ask yeah yeah tom is not nearly as patient as Jim false he led you another great question i don’t have to ask it now it is so Jim there is going to be a conversation at some point here it might be happening right now for all we know where Tom Galardi and Jim Mill are having the conversation of you just heard he he is throwing our goalie under the bus the guy we signed for eight years he’s saying the Edmonton Oil He said in his postgame that the Edmonton Oilers were a better team than us he said the better team won he went out and said that he said the Ed and is that’s and that’s something where the owner and the GM are going to have to have a hard look at themselves and be like do we really think the Edmonton Oilers were a better team because if they if we if we don’t think they were a better team and we think we should have been able to win that series there’s a pretty big disconnect right there so it’s and that falls on coaching and that’s coaching and then it’s also a coach that I think Robert was the one Robert and I were talking about on the elevator like what’s the opposite of the mightest touch where everything you touch goes poorly a goal right like and it’s and it’s and there’s Don’t say i already Well he did it again oh yeah yeah but we’re on a different network we’re not yet we’re not yet i thought we I saw a flag in there i have to explain what flag well when you wave your phone like that I thought Can we get this time for So I waved my don’t know how you move forward with what they have right now and I’m with Shawn i I think it’s a 50/50 situation here that either it’s a short leash to start next season or it’s some deep whatever and it’s it happens And he adds in the other little dig there is we kind of need a save there that we’re on the penalty kill he says we kind of need a save there on the Cory Perry chance yes is it open in front of the net but it is it is one of those where you talk about intent in messaging that is later in the press conference after he has already said what he said and he brings up we need a save there and I know that there are people there Pete Dbor clearly believes that the biggest difference in this series was the fact that Stuart Skinner was in one net and Jake got in the other that is the that is how Pete Dbor is leaving this series i’m going to do a Luds for you yeah good luds would would if I said that Luds would say “How many times was somebody from the Dallas Stars standing all alone in front of you?” I’m not telling you that i’m That’s not my take that is the that is the head coach’s take right and I’m But that’s exactly what you say right Leds well I would say that I think we everything that Sean is saying I I think the the players the home well the guys with the stars on their chests made it a little easier for the goalender at that end of the ring that That’s kind Yeah 100% and it’s it’s there’s what actually happened and what they said happened are two very different things so let let me ask you guys this Sam let me ask you this since you’re just sitting there with a dumb look on your face if if it if it wasn’t the only one I got if it wasn’t for Jakeer and and maybe we could say randon if you want okay you know where I’m going right yeah that guy that’s standing next to Ray Ferraro they are not in They’re not in this round okay yeah so does that mean anything that that means something doesn’t it that means something it should mean something i mean I I was wondering and it didn’t it made it pretty clear that it wasn’t going to happen with the way Jake kind of I was wondering if there was going to be a redeeming quality here of he lets up the two goals and then on two point blank like two great chances like it’s not his fault on the and I was wondering if there’s going to be a redeeming quality moment here and obviously it didn’t happen where you know what he comes out to start the second period like you know what hey you do do the you do the talked about that I said that credit to Sam as cuz Sam said the same thing to me up in the press box was I wonder if I you were there too we’re all talking about I wonder if Jake comes back to start the second period but the other thing that we did talk about to follow up just so you can take off on this too or you Sam is I think sometimes that’s the reason you don’t have to call a timeout that was the worst part of it like I think the hand I think the handling of it so the timeout was you call the timeout and then if you watch the body language Jake skates to the bench jake skates to the bench he sees the He doesn’t know he Yeah he doesn’t know he I’m a And we could all see Casey starting to get and then and then he starts to go back and then you see Pete give the pretty vicious arm like you’re out of here type deal and those for amateur lip readers we can all know what it kind of looked like when it said get the something out of out and it was and he didn’t say grundles no he did not say grundles or giblets nachos and taint so it is a it was a bold and grundles there it is there it is that’s my one for the show it was a It was a It was a bold decision and it was a very risky decision because we have talked a lot about Jay Goinger being this prideful goalie this goalie who uses things like that so you have now as a coach you have put him in this spot where he is going to sit for five months now with a dwell and dwell on a two-shot two goal game where it was not his fault and he never got the like I guarantee like redeem himself he is going to go home tonight jay Hodra is gonna go home tonight hopefully and he is going to look at that game and and look at the replay the goals that went in against Casey to Smith and be like we win that game 4-2 if I’m still in net he saves the breakaway he saves the Skinner one you think he makes the save the breakaway on on McDavid or is I don’t know about I don’t know about I don’t think you’re in the spot but you’re not but the the McDavid breakaway doesn’t happen if you’re not down 3-1 like that’s That’s that’s a that’s very much a you’re pressing so much because you have to like so and it wasn’t even that it’s just a horrible no but but it’s it’s a whole the whole point is the goal to Smith comes in and let in is a classic example of a goalie and Casey Smith is very much a rhythm goalie he’s a goalie who it’s one of the reasons he needed to play more in the regular season honestly and that’s a whole another conversation that we can do a whole another show on you were talking about that on what chaos but like but Casey is a rhythm goalie and he’s someone who needs to play more and get into rhythm so when you come in there’s nothing you can simulate in practice on that first goal and so he comes in and that that’s a save that Jake makes because Jake controls rebounds that’s a play where if you get the the first save and everything like that doesn’t happen so that goal doesn’t happen so your timeout should have been your stopping point the timeout should be where you fired up it’s the it was this was a hitting the the launch this was pulling out the nuclear launch codes and hitting the button and now and now and now now Pete is Pete Pete will live with the consequences sam Sam let me ask you what what are your thoughts on I guess from a from a former player standpoint being in that situation a few different times do you think the players may have been thinking also that our number one is coming back in at the start of the second period and and if not if you probably don’t know but in the coming upcoming days I would like you to find that answer out for me yeah no I can definitely ask i I’m curious because if we thought it I imagine other people did as well within the team because you know that that I mean that Sean said it that was a premeditated move pete even said it he even said they had had conversations before about Jake’s failures or whatever you want to call it in the previous playoffs and he knew if Jake didn’t come out and look like the Jake Hotinger that played against Winnipeg and was incredible they had that in their back pocket i mean Pete was ready for that so that to me is even more lack of confidence injur than what we’re talking about right now the fact that he basically went into that game saying “Hey if Jake doesn’t save the first couple we’re we’re taking him out of here.” And that that to me just says everything about what we’re talking about so um if I was a player to be honest with you if I was on this team I would be disappointed in the decision that Pete made i really would if I was a if I was Thomas Harley or someone that’s played all year battled with Jay Gottinger seen what he can do especially when sometimes he lets in a soft goal and responds and plays an incredible game after i think Jay Gottener earned the right to try to win this game for his team with the season on the line and I think this didn’t give him that chance if just for the sake of devil’s advocate because I I think we’re all in agreement about this but we’ll I’ll go with Sam first if he calls his time out Pete Dbor does that and Jake stays in the net and he gives up a third one and he keeps him in and he doesn’t pull him saying “Wow I think Casey to Smith gives us a better chance to win in that game.” That’s my opinion i think he’s earned the right to develop that and earn the right to be on the ice with his teammates from a from a players view I think and again this would be up to you guys to have conversations with the players that whether it’s tomorrow or in June like to be able to ask the question to whoever you guys have your best relationships with did you guys think Jake was going back in at the end you know at the start of the second because I truly believe that especially the veteran guys i would think that they’re going “Okay we know this is on us and yeah maybe that one but that’s our guy right there and we know that that guy’s going back in.” And look at this jake’s not just a goalie on that team jake is a part of that leadership group goalies can’t wear letters in the NHL and everything like that but if goalies could wear letters in the in the NHL Jake is probably wearing an A for the Dallas Stars just let’s call that what it is so you took out tried that once too he had the little C on his mask and everything like that but but you you took out the with your season on the line you took part of your leadership group out of the game you benched him yes and it was and it’s something where all four all the players that spoke after the game I think so Jamie spoke after the game jamie spoke like Jamie would normally speak mico Ranton spoke after the game wyatt Johnston um who else robertson um yeah Robert spoke and everyone who was asked about the the decision to for Jake to be taken out of the game all of them gave some form of the answer of “Well that’s a that’s a coach’s decision that’s not my that’s and it’s but not even that’s on us.” It was way more of that’s the coach’s decision and that is it that’s a punt yes and it’s a punt you have to take right there but Exactly but it is a it is a spot where I I think that’s where I keep going a little bit further on this where it’s not just Jakeer is more than a goalie to this team he is somebody who is part of their leadership group he is one of the close like when the Fins go to s like silly story but it gives an example of we talk about how this team is close when the Fins go to saunas on the road Jake is the person who finds the saunas for them like like Jake is the Jake is the he’s less is the party planner yeah and so which is really important again obviously the on ice performance is the number one but I have a well they but they also just sorry they also understand that he saved their ass so many times you know what I mean and you but l and I know it’s not the most important thing but the fact that Jake is in his stall for media availability every single day game seven against Colorado he was game five 30 minutes and just sat there and talked and didn’t didn’t hide I I know that’s not the prerequisite to being a great NHL player but to me he’s willing to step in front of the cameras and answer the all the hard questions oh he’s American every single time and the hard and he does it looking like he’s unfased by it which shows that mental strength he’s a Midwestern guy and he he’s Minnesota nice that’s what I mean right up there just a little further south and so when you see all that you go “This is the guy I want to hitch my wagon to.” Yep yeah I know i I agree with I think we’re all Go ahead no go ahead Sam i was just going to say the I think the I understand regular season even some playoff games pulling your goalie to spark your team but all the things you guys just said this is the guy they would die for the fact that Pete pulls the plug on him after two goals that had no basically nothing to do with him i’m not saying Jake can’t at his best can’t save one of those he can but realistically he’s hung out to dry by his defense the fact that they pull him out of the game like that again I keep going back to the fact that it is a do or die chance to save your season i think that does more harm than good and I think that the third goal was a proven point of that that Stars team looked in shock when they went out there and played that next shift they give up a goal what a minute after they get pulled it’s a absolute cluster in front of the net nobody’s tying up sticks nobody knows what to do i think that 58 seconds later there you go i think that shocked this team i mean if I’m a player on this team I keep saying the same thing but it’s just I would never make that move because I think it would hurt the team more than help and I think it did and after that point yeah they made it close but you’re down three nothing in the first period against the Edmonton Oilers you’re probably not winning that game you know what the most important part of the season you got to jump in quick Sean yeah cuz Go ahead i got I got I got to do to ls what that was you know what it did it added a distraction the what changing the goalie added a distraction well no exactly but but I think what may be the most important part of the season now is the exit meetings i’m just saying because and I’m not talking I’m talking with when a general manager talks to players is that separate is is Jim doing that with his coaches i don’t know how Jim does his goes about his business but I would be talking to my leadership group if I’m the general manager i’m getting the temperature of things because we all know if there and not deservedly so sometimes it are the coaches that go and so you have if you get if you test the the waters with you know the your leaders whoever they are whether they wear a letter or not there there’s leaders there you test the waters and you come out of there with a common theme yeah that you know and it may be hey listen it was just one of those things no but if you get in there and go we kind of if if they tell the truth you know what I’m saying that’s that to me becomes super important boy there’ll be some serious digging too of is there a growing rift between players and coaches and coaching staff or or you know specifically Pete did that open it or widen if there is one i I’m not saying there is you think was there You guys would know you guys talk to me was there ever anything between Pete and coaches probably not you mean players and coaches it looked like the stars were doing him and spotter are going on a behind the scenes too i don’t know the thing that this whole activity sheds light on one of the big things is we know Pete is a stubborn coach we’ve always known that he believes in crafting things his way and getting things to fit into his way he has in Vegas he put things on his goalies when they didn’t when it didn’t work out well when he goes and does like so the whole any narrative of he’s changed no he’s still the same he’s he very much has the exact same approach the game he’s always had that has not changed and that approach can work for year one year two and it can it can win you a lot of regular season games which but when you get to the Western Conference I mean the Stars have effectively become and yes I use the word effectively effectively And the Stars have become the bell it’s not the Pavvelski bell i knew there was something they barely used the Pavvelki bell the Stars are now the NHL’s answer to the Buffalo Bills of the 1990s well sort of oh sorry they’re worse than the Buffalo Bills in the 1990s the Buffalo Bills got to the Super Bowl the Bills made it to the Super Bowl right yeah but the but the Bills But the Bills got there and what they lose like 52 to6 in those games right well except for Scott Norwood but the points made it we know that well hey it is better for Buffalo to have won their conference repeatedly it’s also worse to have lost in the championship clue what I’m doing but I had a nice TV and a couch i sit in there and we would talk guys that I played with we’d talk and and I would have certain players in practices because I was going on the ice and skate around guys that I played with and they’d skate hey and catch them everything okay yeah thanks lads it’s better now i never said a word to no one no one there were other things that Yeah you were the filter well you’re that buffer for him you know what I mean you can pound things off them and there are times sometimes guys just need That’s exactly right they just need to get it out but This was the best chance to make/win the Stanley Cup and it was the same ending. There's multiple questions to be asked this offseason, but I don't think the coach, gm, or owner have any answers.

The only problem I have is that Oetter has done bad 2 times in a row in the Western Conference Finals. I know it is not all of his fault, but I do have questions about him in this round.
Move Jamie Benn to the player liason role, or put him in player development. Jamie cannot take up cap space next year.

I don't understand this comment section, the only thing I can assume is there are a lot of fairweather fans in here. As a 18+ year fan of the stars, we've been in a lot worse positions throughout the years. The Oilers showed up and we just didn't in the final. The cup is the hardest trophy to win. It sucks but some of you are acting like leaf fans😂
To many players poke checking with sticks in the middle of ice, letting the Oilers drive the center ice, not enough removing the players with the puck or clogging the middle. Also not enough Stars in front of the Oilers goalie to much if the offensive time possession.
Pete DeBoer pulling Oettinger the way he did wasn’t needed. He pulled him as if he was fed up with him. Those goals weren’t his fault per say. He was left all alone, no defenders in front of him. Yeah you need him to make key saves but in a scenario like that, you can’t point the finger solely at him. I think DeBoer let his emotions and anger out in that moment. He shouldn’t have done that. I’m not saying maybe they could have won. I think they still would have lost but the score could have been a lot closer. DeSmith wasn’t used all playoffs and you throw him in cold in the moment where it’s do or die!? what did you expect him to do DeBoer. If nothing else you could have kept Oettinger in and let him at least keep his dignity and perhaps he would have tightened up in a game like this. Like I said, they probably still would have lost. Mcdavid and Draisaitl play a style of game in which they don’t have a clue how to defend against it. Jamie Benn, I hate to say this, but Jamie Benn is the only reason I wanted them to win. He has been such a great captain to this team. I wanted to at least see him finally win it. If it was going to happen, this was it. And yet the entire playoffs, 16 games, he could only get 3 damn points. You’d think if he wanted it bad enough he could have stepped up somewhere and made a bigger impact. Benn’s contract is up and he will become a UFA. I think he needs to go ahead and hang up the gloves. I’d love to see him continue, but I know he’s not going to take something like a one year one million. There’s going to be cap space opening up in which we really need to find more physical defensemen. Lybushkin wasn’t the answer, neither was Dumba or Ceci.

in the playoffs this year a lot of early and offensive zone penalties that put you behind the 8 ball. The penalty Borque took was careless and stupid and a bit indicative of how they are not focused when the puck first drops.
Lucky to be there jets should have beat these guys.
Oiler fam here. We went through our Decade of Darkness and we still supported our team. Canada has had 30 yrs of no Cup, yet we're as crazy as ever for our home teams. Dallas has been in the mix for almost a decade. You've had it good in comparison…unlike the sad sack Leafs. Your universe isn't crashing. A few good tweaks and you'll be in the WCF again. No matter how the Oilers do next round, they will need to tweak to improve next season too.
Bit the silver lining is that snowflake hintz came back off life support after almost losing a foot to score a goal in the losing effort. He's also nominated for an oscar.

The disappointment isn't that they lost. It's how they lost. We don't have enough leadership, character, or grit/toughness. We were clearly the inferior team. At no time in this series, did I feel we were going to advance. Honestly I was shocked we made it this far in the playoffs. Time to make some personnel changes starting with the Captain. It's time to either take a major step back, or move on Jamie. I don't know about DeBoer. He's a really good coach, but seems stuck in his ways with every team he coaches. You need to be adaptable and set up a system or strategy to match your teams make up. But Nill has to also change his strategy. This isn't the 90's when finesse teams could win the cup. He has to realize that!!
Lots of 'ifs', 'could haves', should haves' probably would haves'….you simply lost to a better team that was better than you in every single facet of the game….including coaching.
