BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Stars Fire Head Coach Pete DeBoer – Why Now & Who Replaces Him?

breaking news from the Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nil has relieved Pete Dbor of his coaching duties what does it mean why did it happen and who’s going to be the next coach of the Dallas Stars we’ll break it all down [Music] next your Locked On Stars your daily podcast on the Dallas Stars part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day howdy Stars fans i’m Joey Ericen former producer of 105 through the fan please be sure to subscribe we are free and available wherever you get your podcast and on YouTube and as always thank you so much for making us a part of your day and making us your first listen the off season became that more interesting for the Dallas Stars who announced this morning Pete Dbor has been relieved of his coaching duties the coaching search is now on and the Stars are the only team in the NHL without a bench boss for next season who are the potential candidates who’s going to usher in a new era of Dallas Star hockey we’ll get to that of course but first we have to discuss why this happened and the writing was really on the wall and I’ll tell you why today’s episode is brought to you by Monarch Money take control of your finances with Monarch Money use code lotmarkmoney.com for 50% off your first year so the reason I I say the the writing was on the wall is for a few reasons but the main one is and I continue to come back to this point the rumors and rumblings following the Western Conference final exit that certain players were not happy with how Dbor handled Jakeer in game five and other situations in that Western Conference final i continue to come back to that and many of you know I have defended Dbor on pulling Jake Goter in game five and I was not on the hype train to get rid of Dbor immediately following another Western Conference final exit but I started to change my tune and for you everydayers out there that have been listening over the last few days when I’ve touched on the Dbor topic it really worried me it concerned me that there was some obvious riffs whether that’s relationship or trust issues between the head coach Pete Dbor and certain players and maybe it’s Jake Goter maybe it’s the leadership group but either way as I said you’re going to have to get rid of him if he quote unquote lost the room and for those of you wondering if he did I I think this answers your question there was some trust issues between certain players and Pete Dbor and you cannot have those distractions moving in to next season and Jakeer I don’t think was the lone reason why Jim Nil made this move i think it’s all-encompassing of the last three Western Conference final exits where really it’s been the same issues the past three seasons that have led to Dallas not getting over the hump and reaching a Stanley Cup final but the Jake Goter situation was the nail in the coffin and I defended him for pulling Jay Conra will still defend him for making a coaching decision in a highintensity situation but what really hurt him was throwing Jay Goter under the bus in that postgame press conference we touched on this quite a bit right after the game he runs over Jay Cottinger a bit and then kind of went back and forth a few times and that is what really did him in and to exacerbate that was what we heard in the exit interviews which is still baffling that Dbor had still not talked with Jay Gottinger on what happened in game five of that Western Conference final a few days later he has still not talked to him to provide some clarity on why he made the decision and that is the nail in the coffin for Pete Dbor how you do not go talk to your franchise goalender he’s going to be your number one whether you like it or not for the next eight years and to not even talk to him before the exit interviews just baffling just really really baffling and I can defend Dore on making a coaching decision like I said but that is what really did him in and the more information the more rumors and rumblings we’re hearing out of the dressing room that there’s some players that aren’t too happy this is the right decision this is the right decision by Jim Nil this was the right decision to move on get a new voice in and start fresh because Jakeer is your number one goalender and Dbor has had some issues in the past look at his time in Vegas with Mark Andre Flurry and Robin Leonard remember the sword in the back of Mark Andre Flurry posted by uh Flurry’s agent well we saw some of that again over the last few weeks and I think Jim Nil made the right decision here and I’ll get you his full quote from this morning after careful consideration we believe that a new voice is needed in our locker room to push us closer to our goal of winning a Stanley Cup we’d like to thank Pete for everything that he has helped our organization achieve over the past three seasons and wish him nothing but the best uh but the best moving forward uh nil also said he uh just uh completed a press conference this afternoon he had no problem with Jake Andre being pulled in game five but the postgame comments there is probably some remorse there for Dbor and Neil also said quote I just let go of a guy who went to three straight conference finals that’s not easy to do and he also uh uh credited Dbor with his professionalism over hearing the news and it was a tough decision I’m sure and we even heard owner Tom Galardi mention that D’Vor is their guy but I think Jim Nil made the right decision here you cannot just throw your number one net minder under the bus after the offensive issues you had again for the third straight third straight Western Conference Finals the the offensive issues that you had again and yeah the defense could have been better and Otter could have played better uh I think both of those things are true but to just sort of run over Otter in the driveway a few times like double down on it it just wasn’t a good look it was a mistake and ultimately the writing was on the wall you cannot have any sort of distractions or any tension with your head coach leadership group let alone anybody in that dressing room and also I’ll come back to this jay Goter is loved within that building and loved within the dressing room a tremendous tremendous professional Jake Goter is whether you think he’s an elite goalender whether you think he’s bad right i don’t care you cannot say a Jake Andre is not a professional the way he handled those questions in the exit interview about a week ago and his coach didn’t have the decency to at least reach out and talk to him that’s just not a good look not a good look at all and Jim Nil had to make a decision and he took a swing and now they’re going to have to bring in a new voice and it’ll be rather intriguing this is going to be fascinating because of what Jim Nil said i just got rid of a guy that went to three straight conference finals and like uh I I said multiple times over the last few weeks I was not in favor of of getting rid of Petore but if there was going to be some relationship or trust issues that were severed then you have to look into it and you have to make those tough decisions because it would just be a a total fiasco if you’re going to have issues with Petore and Otter Petore and Jamie Ben whatever it’s just going to be a fiasco and unnecessary noise that the stars do not need this this is Dallas this is Stars this is Stars hockey they don’t need to be dealing with any of that and we saw it with Monty right um he was just relieved and we really didn’t know at at that time with Jim Montgomery uh the reasons why he was just let go um but we can read into this a bit more and just the fact that he didn’t speak to Ager before the exit interviews and the postgame press conference that I mentioned that I did not love with him just going “Well the fact is it’s a big sample size jake Andrew has lost five of seven what whatever it was against Edmonton just just not a great look and I think the Stars got ahead of this in a lot of ways and I think it was the right decision um we’ll see we’ll see how the Stars go about finding a new candidate finding somebody to bring in to be the bench boss because at the end of the day Dbor did a lot of great things and we’re going to touch on some of that and I also want to touch on what does this mean because it goes back to what I said about Jim Nil at the trade deadline acquiring Miko Rantin we’ll do that in just a moment today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by Monarch Money ever check your bank account and wonder year that’s moderatemoney.com code lot ninhl for half off your first year well I think many Stars fans got their answer to the question had Pete Tabore lost the locker room and now I want to discuss what does it mean and I I’m coming back to this and this is my opinion but I spoke about this when the Stars acquired Miko Ranton at the deadline and this is on Jim Nil specifically jim Nil has lost his patience jim Nil is not the older just quiet GM that says “I like where our team is at.” Right that’s always a bit that he’s always um in love or he always likes his hockey team he’s getting impatient he believes that he’s put together a good enough roster over the last three or four years to at least get to a Stanley Cup final maybe he doesn’t believe they should have won after watching Florida and Edmonton this past week stars are nowhere near any of those teams i I think we can be honest about that but he believes they should have at least maybe gotten over the Western Conference final hump over the last three years and he’s growing impatient and he’s going to take big swings and I said that after he went and traded for Miko Rantin he is going to make big swings in order to make this team better and get them over the hump and he’s not going to just sit back anymore and just let things take care of themselves and I think this is a big swing i think this would qualify of a giant swing for for Jim Nil and the fact of the matter is yes Dbor had a lot of regular season success but he’s 0 and3 in the Western Conference final and this sort of brings in the other part of why he was let go the same issues continue to arise over the last three seasons and he could not prove that he’s good enough to get over the hump and Jim Nil along with the Jay Gotener news and some of the comments there I think had had enough and he’s growing impatient and I think that’s good because other teams that are impatient they win Stanley Cups look at Vegas look at the way Florida has retoled uh look at Edmonton making swings making additions it wins you Stanley Cups it gets you to the pinnacle and I credit Jim Nil for not just being complacent and I mentioned this quote after Acquir Miko ranted him complacency is the enemy of success and the Stars cannot just run it back and do the same thing all over again next season with the head coach with players they have to make changes and this is a big one and we can applaud him for that we can applaud Jim Nil for making this move whether you agree with it or not I know there’s still some people out there that believe Pete Dbor should still be the head coach and I I I think that’s fair like I said for the most part I was there too but I started to change my tune when you keep hearing information squeaking out that there’s some players that are upset like it’s hard to it’s hard to just run it back again and act like everything’s all fine and dandy right complacency is the enemy of success and Jim Nil is growing impatient i I think we saw that the trade deadline too like “No we have a really talented young guy in Stanovven but we we’ll give him up and some picks a lot of picks to to go get an elite player like Mo Ranciden and I think we’re seeing it now he’s not happy he has won back-to-back NHL GM year of the ward he’s really got nothing to show for it.” Like that’s nice but he he has nothing to show for he’s got nothing tangible nothing tangible and of course a tangible asset the Stanley Cup and they haven’t even got to it so I I think that’s what it means in my opinion for the Dallas Stars that’s what it means and uh we’ll go into some of uh what Pete Dbor did in his last three seasons if you look at the last three years in Dallas Dbor had 149 wins uh it’s quite a bit um that was top 10 it’s top five actually in the NHL during that span 327 points that was the most in the NHL over the last three seasons the Stars won a lot of games they broke some franchise records a year previously they were incredible but they don’t have a Stanley Cup to show for it and look at the top look at the top five teams here in point totals over the regular season the Dallas Stars Carolina Hurricanes Toronto Maple Leafs Winnipeg Jets and Boston Bruins look at those five teams dallas Carolina Toronto Winnipeg Boston what do they all have in common over the last three years over the last five years over the last decade no Stanley Cups all that regular season success those top five teams their last three years they got nothing to show for it nothing to show for it um and and then you go down like you know the Vegas is there Colorado is there Edmonton is there Florida’s 11th Tampa Bay they won a couple of cups right um they’re just outside the top 10 so something had to change and this is a way to do it and I I’ll I’ll defend Jim Nil for for making uh a tough decision i’m sure it was not easy although I think some of the comments uh about Otter and stuff made it a bit easier he’s your number one goalender whether you like it or not and um it was a nail in the coffin so the coaching search is on who’s out there well I mean you could find a recycled coach uh there’s plenty of those out there jay Woodcraftoft he was in Edmonton before he was let go for Chris Knoblock who is now the current head coach uh of Edmonton i think Neil Graham of the Texas Stars is going to get a real look and uh Jim Nil did say in his press conference that he’s open-minded whether it’s a veteran or young coach um look at a few years ago too he gave Jim Montgomery a go and um I think we all agreed that would have been a good move of course there was some uh external con external conflicts that ended up leading to his firing but Jim Montgomery was was given a chance as a young coach coming out of Denver i know David Carl’s a hot topic but um David Carl is a head coach of Denver won national championship uh a couple years ago he got back to the national championship with the Pioneers this past season uh fell short but a very very hot commodity i think he’s uh someone a lot of teams want i think all 33 teams want a David Carl i really do um but he he just inked a new contract with with Denver so I don’t think that’s really reality but you you never know maybe Jim Nil can can sweet talk him but I think Neil Graham’s going to get a really good look um the head coach for the Texas Stars who’s proving that he can win he has a lot of relationships with the players that have come through that program and the stars are probably going to have a lot of a lot of young players from Texas that are going to get some shots next season so there would be some continuity there if Neil Graham comes out i think he has to be uh a top top candidate the stars are going to look at so there’s um a lot of a lot of different uh options out there of course I would like to see Jim Nil go a bit against the grain or against tradition I I guess you could say and go after maybe a young upand cominging coach i don’t want a recycled head coach like Lavia right lavallet right uh he he’s out there i I just I I don’t see the I don’t see the appeal of that um in a lot of ways I I think maybe a young upand cominging hook look at what Edmonton did what Chris Knobblock and granted he’s got two of the best players in the world but Knoblock has defeated Dbor and back-to-back Western Conference final there’s something there it’s It’s not just McDavid and dry cidle so a new era upcoming in Dallas and there were some more updates uh nil added on some injuries that I want to get into as well um on the take-home segment we’ll do that in just uh a moment so as always we like to to take a look at uh the injuries that that come out uh following an exit from the Stanley Cup finals things that were of course were held very close to the vest and um Nil did share some updates on that uh Tyler Sean will rehab a shoulder injury over the summer roe hints had a broken foot we did know that lean Bishell had a shoulder injury which isn’t too big of a surprise in a lot of ways remember that spill he took in that series against Colorado could not believe he came back in that game what a warrior for him to come back that was a hard hard fall right into those boards and I thought he was going to be out for the rest of the the playoffs and the fact that he came back and and soldured on was remarkable but he did have a shoulder injury so uh I don’t think that’s very very surprising but uh there you go um there was some updates on some injuries uh Jim Nil did acknowledge the lack of offense in the playoffs and said they need to be open to different styles of play as they begin a coaching search and as I said nil on a veteran versus young coach he wants to be open-minded there so I’m I’m really cur again Neil Graham he’s been the head coach of the Texas Stars since uh 2020 and we know what he’s he’s doing down there in the HL we touched on it yesterday i I think he’s certainly going to be in the in the conversation and then you have some guys uh uh you know that have been around the block right like Peter Lavallet uh Dave Hackall right um there’s some guys out there tortoella uh could be in the conversation um Joel Quinnville of course he he already um he already uh was was hired I believe by if I’m not mistaken but you know Jay Woodcraftoft is out there too um Woodcraftoft uh did a lot of great stuff in Edmonton um but he got off to that horrible horrible start um a few years ago and that uh was sort of his doing in but um yeah there’s a a lot of I guess your typical recycled head coaches that are out there but Jimn wants to be open-minded as he should and they got to find a a coach that can win with this roster number one like this team is still built to win now they have veterans they have young talent they have a little bit of everything they They really do the stars at the end of the day they they they have a lot of talent but now it’s about putting together and finding a coach that can help them get across the finish line get across the hump and I’m uh I guess intrigued to see this new era of Dallas Stars hockey um upcoming um it was like Dorted a lot of great things you you can’t argue that um Stars had one of their best three runs in franchise history outside of winning Stanley Cup but it was a very nice run and they won a lot of playoff games too um I I touched on the regular season success if you go to the playoffs the starters won 29 playoff games that was third um in the NHL over that span florida and Edmonton uh had more um Dbor pro proved he could win in the playoffs um but for whatever reason when it got to that point it got to the the finals the Western Conference Finals just struggled and the offense uh laid an egg and um a lot of a lot of things went by the wayside so um again I I think this was the right move by Jim Nil based off what we were hearing coming out of the dressing room from certain sources that players were not happy i think his comments on Otter certainly did him in or certainly did not help but it wasn’t the only reason three years to the Western Conference Finals is great but but nothing to show for it at the end of the day and I think it means Jim Nil is impatient and he’s going to make moves because he feels like he’s put together a good enough roster to at least get to the final maybe not win it but I’m sure he believes he’s given Dbor a phenomenal roster and maybe he’s underachieved with it that may be harsh but maybe that’s what he uh he believes a bit deep down so some fascinating fascinating conversations are going to be had over uh the next few weeks until the Stars find their head coach the coaching search is on we’ll be here to to break it all down talk about potential candidates and stuff some of the ones I mentioned today Woodcraft Lavallet Neil Graham I I think’s going to get a real look at it and um he should be a popular candidate as well to to be the new bench boss of the Dallas Stars but woo bit of a bombshell this morning i think a lot of Stars fans are happy with this uh trust me I I I heard you i heard you engaging with me on Twitter On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, Joey Erickson reacts to the news that the Dallas Stars have fired Head Coach Pete DeBoer. DeBoer had one year left on his contract. After a controversial pulling of Jake Oettinger in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final, DeBoer was on the hot seat and his comments following the game played a major part in this decision. Joey shares why he believes this decision was made by GM Jim Nill, what does it mean for the Stars moving forward, and potential candidates to replace him for next season.

  1. Sometimes a goalie takes the grenade for his team and sometimes the coach takes it. It was a team effort to suck that bad against the Oilers. I still expect a lot of moves by the Stars before next year's playoffs. I have no doubt Pete will land a head coaching job again soon and I hope the Stars find a coach that gives them a fresh start so they can play my Oilers again next year. The alternative is you go the Canucks route and we don't even have to think about your team next post-season.

  2. The 2 questions I had after that end of game press conference by DeBoer were this: 1) He said he was trying to put a spark in the players with the goalie change. The Stars were in an elimination game. Why weren't they "sparked" at the opening face-off? 2). He said Oettinger had a bad record against Edmonton in the playoffs. Then why did he start the game if DeBoer had no faith in him?

  3. The otter pull. His actions during the game. The Dadonov scratch. His comments. I mean if you’re rattled? I get it. But don’t let them see you’re rattled.

  4. You just don’t throw your goalie under the bus — simple as that. In the playoffs, you live and die with your goalie. Pulling the goalie is often less about performance and more about waking up the team. Hopefully the new playing style actually fits the speed of Heiskanen and Hintz better than that rigid blue-line-to-blue-line approach.

  5. They better not be done. Just because you have a new coach preaching toughness and grit; you actually need to have the roster that can execute those orders. The era in the NHL that exists now, does not reward finesse teams. We need to change this roster starting with the captain. We are way too easy to play against when it counts in the playoffs. We need to start making opponents hate to play us.

  6. I still think giving up stank wasn’t a good move. Dude one like 1 of three of our guys that would absolutely badger and fight every time he was on the ice. We missed that all post season

  7. It’s not the coach it’s the players. Vegas, then Edmonton twice just had better players than Dallas the last 3 years, no new players then same ol outcome, Edmonton made Dallas look small and slow

  8. The Dallas Stars the last three postseasons have made it to conference finals, a very difficult feat to accomplish, but have struggled to score in conference finals, losing each of them. DeBoer no doubt is DeNoMore lol, but problems remain with the roster. The Dallas Stars should’ve already made at least one Stanley Cup final appearance, but haven’t. Maybe changing head coach will help but only time will tell if that does happen.

  9. I don’t think it was just Jake Oettinger he threw under the bus but his own players by saying they were the “best on paper” but not the “ best team on the ice.” It seems to me that he really didn’t 100 percent believe that the team could make it to the Stanley Cup final much less get past the Edmonton Oilers. I hope Jim Nill doesn’t stop at the head coach the team needs to be revamped as well. Some of these older players are going to be released. They need to get younger, bigger, faster players across the board. They can’t win on finesse they must play more physical and a tougher brand of hockey 🏒. Edmonton is the standard of play the next HC should chase whoever gets the job.

  10. I know this is off topic but look what the Detroit Lions did. Hired a guy who played the game, was an interim head coach for a team that fired their coach in the middle of the season. He’s a new coach and his team has his identity and intensity. He has the reputation now of being a gambler and sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t. Since he’s been head coach of the Lions, they are top 5 in win percentage. A lot closer to the Lombardi trophy than they were before he got there. And really you look across the NFL and there’s first time and young head coaches everywhere. These young coaches resonates with the players better. And these coaches are so creative now. So the Stars going young and upcoming could bring out some untapped potential for players like Wyatt Johnston.

  11. I am pissed. Name me one coach that will take you to the playoffs next year?!! They could have worked things out. So your goalie's voice runs the team? Otter's performance sucks against the Oilers and the team had very little heart in that series. The heart of the team was traded to Carolina. Granlund was the only one that actually performed at a higher level during that series. Jamie Benn didn't perform at all during the playoffs. Robertson didn't perform, Duchesne had a lackluster playoff performance, Mikko had a great series against his former team but you know Edmonton was a better team.

  12. I believe the owners group and Nill must have looked at each other after that atrocious press sequence by first DeBoer and then Öttinger after who took such treatment on the chin like a southern gentleman with a shrug. As a Pred, my opponents in the south must have realized the obvious.
Texans have honour. This was unacceptable treatment of one of your own, let alone a franchise anchor player. Inevitable that Nill had to let DeBoer go

  13. This is good for Otter… sometimes a goalie doesn't really grow up until he gets his coach fired (after underachieving in 3 straight conference finals in net). Now he must man up.

  14. Got a soft spot for the Stars, since they used to be the California Golden Seals. But that's how Pete got fired from the Sharks. Being honest. I'm sure he'll find another HC job. He's a good coach who can't quite get to the show. He couldn't unfortunately with the Stars. It wasn't enough. GL to him.

  15. I think he knew he wasn't getting extended and decided he'd rather make his $6.67 million next season fishing than coaching. That presser was clearly a guy burying everyone but himself on the way out.

  16. The truth is, the team simply doesn't have the playoff quality they need against the Oilers, with J. Benn, Duchene, Seguin, Robertson, etc. They lack speed, tackling ability along the boards, etc. That's why they're simply too weak at 5-on-5 and especially 4-on-4. Pete, as a top coach, has noticed all of this and, with his actions (Jake, Tyler, Jamie, and Jason), has essentially sent a "message" to Jim Nill! And Jim Nill has responded with this "powerful group."
