kevin Durant found out about it and said “I don’t want to go there.” And so the key is going to be as we go into this trade situation for the next couple of weeks How much of a role is Kevin Durant going to have as he deals with the Suns and potentially other teams on where he might go And the reason he might have a say not only because the Suns want to respect him but also because he’s got one year left on his contract And if a team wants him for more than just one year they may have to talk to him about a contract extension So Kevin is on the record as saying he wants to control the last phase of his career That’s the That’s the spot we’re in right now And that did not include the Warriors Well if I’m the Suns I don’t have to respect his wishes You do not because I’m I’m at the point where I need to do what’s best for the organization I didn’t already tried this where I didn’t traded Kevin Durant and traded away draft picks and assets and all type of stuff And now I’m stuck not only with Kevin Durant trying to get rid of his contract but I’m stuck with Bradley Bill as well cuz I tried the big three So at this point since that they didn’t clean house they don’t have they don’t have to respect his wishes they get the best for the organization The ideal is that they’re able to recoup some of those assets right the only path to do that because of the no trade clause that Bradley Bill has is through a Kevin Durant trade and the irony speaking of Golden State was that Jimmy Butler didn’t they say oh I didn’t want to go to Golden State but then he ends up going to Golden State because he got the extension So people change on different days The other thing is if Kevin Durant is more invested in going there and willing to extend In theory if you’re not trading him as a they’ve subsequently given him an additional contract Okay so the Mavericks can just say “No Jason Kit is under contract we’re about to draft Cooper Flag We’re going to bring him in and have him play alongside Anthony Davis We think we’re going to get Kyrie Irving back They could just say that or they could say to Jason Kidd “We want to make sure you’re not even caring about the Knicks Let’s do something to make you not care about the Knicks and give them a new contract.” Or they could make a deal And historically making a deal for coaches is cheap The last few head coaches who have been traded but couple of second round picks that’s cheap That means nothing So if you’re the Mavericks you got to figure who we going to get to coach And if the answer isn’t great then you’re going to Rose Jason Kidd has known these people And for better or worse Dolan ain’t going anywhere and Leon Rose ain’t going anywhere So the level of continuity that you’re talking about uh is something that you have to take into consideration And as as cool as Jason Kid and Nico seem to be it would also provoke questions about what Nico Harrison’s future may be in Dallas as well and how Jason Kid may be eyeing that because from a personnel standpoint there’s no reason for him to leave Dallas Yeah Speaking of personnel Keith I want to come to you on this Do you feel like Jason Kid puts New York over the top with this same roster Is he that much of a step up from Tibido um being playing for JK I’m I’m not really sure if he’s that much of a Stephaner Tibido They both are great coaches but I think that the other side of the basketball like being connected to the players I think that side means a lot And I think uh what with what Wendy said you know the relationship between JK and JB obviously he had him as a rookie and he kind of built him up I think that’s more important than actually like putting them over top because both of these coaches are great coaches Don’t get me wrong J kid you know uh was just in the Eastern Conference Western Conference Finals last year He went to the finals Uh Warendy like Wendy said the guys are both great coaches I don’t think that it puts either one over top but JK has all his all his tools in Dallas So for me I really don’t think the move would be smart because obviously you know everything You you’re comfortable with the system It’s your system Anthony Towns And I it has to do with the trade rules It has to do with stuff like that And the Knicks have to trade three rotation players otherwise Just keep that in mind when you dream of your Knicks trades Speaking of Knicks transactions look their number one choice right now appears to be Jason Kidd to be their next head coach But Jason Kidd is under contract for two more years at major money in a team that thinks they could compete for the Western Conference Championship next year Obviously that’s complicated Jason Kidd has been traded as a coach before in his career way back in 2014 He worked behind the scenes to help engineer getting himself from Brooklyn to Milwaukee Right now the the the situation is is in the Mavericks court The Mavericks can entertain retaining Jason Kidd shut this whole thing down or they can entertain a trade offer from the Knicks We’ll see in the coming days which direction they go Okay So I wanted a lot of people in on this conversation because there are so many tentacles It is all so fascinating And let’s start with the first piece of that If acquiring uh Kevin Durant would involve trading away Carl Anthony Towns and I don’t want to put you in a compromising position so I’m not going to ask you whether they should do it or not because you have to deal with those guys every single day But as you hear him say that what goes through your mind I I I would say that’s probably the only way it gets done You know anytime you’re going to make a trade for a guy who’s making $54 million you got to look at your team and say you can’t afford to give up multiple players So it would have to be a big contract for another big contract and swap out players And that would tell you a lot about how they felt Carl Anthony Towns fit in New York While the regular season was great there were enough times during the playoffs there was concerns defensively And so you’re swapping out one superstar for another And that’s the only way I think it can get done Bart Scott you host a general sports talk show in New York So while obviously your primary expertise is football you talk about this stuff all the time Should the Knicks trade Carl Anthony Towns to Phoenix for Kevin Durant I believe so We had that conversation A lot of the callers believe that you know maybe Kevin Durant at his age is not a good fit but you have to have an aspiring contract a contract that’s going to be gone in two years if you think you’re going to give Brunson who’s eligible for like 65 to $70 million a year in a couple of years Don’t go too far down the road Next year Yes Do the Knicks win a champion to have a better chance of winning a championship with KD than Carl Anthony I believe so but you got to depend on Mitchell Robinson to stay healthy and that’s a big if right But but so you like Peter Shreger Nick Fan you make that trade I just watched the playoffs just looking for offense at the end there KD is instant offense I know it seems so easy and low hanging fruit Just get the best player Kevin Durant can on his own score 21 points in a fourth quarter And I I liked what Cat did this year I would hate to see him blow the whole thing up with Durant even even as a hardcourt very appealing It really is Last 12 years he’s shot 50% every season from the field 40% from three He’s been incredibly efficient scoring machine Don’t bother me as a fan of sports watching Carl Anthony Towns Get back on defense Like how many shots did the Pacers make after a made basket by the Knicks Like that lack of hustle bothers going to rebound He is a flawed star but he they do very different things He he is he is also um while he is a flawed star he’s also a lot younger than Kevin Durant and that brings me back to Brian Winhorst because if you told me and this is what I’m hearing from the Nick fans that I encounter just everywhere you go in this city It’s less about KD than it is about Giannis Now you told us earlier this morning that Giannis right now is in Europe with his family and so far the Bucks haven’t heard anything from him Does that suggest to us that the draft is going to come and go The summer is going to come and go and Giannis is still going to be in Milwaukee Well I’m very careful to say anything on June 10th that is still applicable by June 25th Greeny the league is just too volatile But right now there is no
