TORONTO BLUE JAYS VS ST LOUIS CARDINALS | PLAY BY PLAY

time of the first pitch today 7:46 Eastern Another day at Bush Stadium in St Louis Missouri The 01 pitch is poked out toward right center and down for a base hit Not a bad pitch from Michaels A slider off the plate away and Bette just stuck the bat out and lofted it over the second baseman Gorman That was almost like a two strike approach like you said a slider off the plate by about a ball Bo Bashette looks like he onehanded that almost over the second baseman Nolan Gorman just watching it go over his head But that’s a it’s an interesting base hit for Bo Bashette there to lead off this ball game Bette takes a lead off first Michael from the stretch deals to Addison Barger First pitch heater there for a strike Nothing and one Infield is in the shade right now Most of the outfield as well but it’s a hot day in St Louis 26° and sunny 6-4 righty offers home and Barger lifts the ball to shallow left field Shortstop win is going out there He turns to the left and makes the catch Just grabbed it for the first out He was angling right and then changed direction at the last moment Underhanded caught that and actually brought the glove into his chest to make sure the ball didn’t pop out I think that ball actually he bobbled that ball just a little bit That could have been a big break for the Blue Jays but he comes down with it for the first out So one on and one out And here’s Alejandro Kirk Couple guys moved up in the order like Barger and Kirk because it’s an off day today for Vladimir Guerrero Jr Right on right No it’s going to be a step off and throw to first and a dive back in by Bo Bashette This first inning is brought to you by Armstrong Bird Food the reason birds fly north feeding Blue Jay since 1986 Visit armstrongbirdfood.com Now the first pitch to Kirk Swing and a fly ball center field Fairly shallow Scott charging in and it’s down for a base hit Bette with a good job was creeping towards second the whole way and then took off when that ball landed Bloop single for Kirk who has done something to get the baseball gods on his side recently Two on with one out My goodness When you are hot you are hot That sinker just ate up Alejandro Kirk I was going to say Vladimir Guerrero Jr because he’s always in this spot but man just drops in in front of front of the center fielder The Blue Jays are cooking now with one out Scott one of the fastest in baseball out in center field You got a blue pit pretty shallow to get it in front of him First pitch to George Springer now Misses down and away ball one So Bette on second Kirk on first one out no score in the top of the first inning Michaelis with a 10-0 Foul tip Springer down to a knee on a big hack on a sinker One and one Michael throws two types of fast balls The four seamer in the sinker He’s got a slider and a curve ball A change up and every once in a while a sweeper that kind of splits the difference between a slider and curve is 1-1 big over the top curve ball at 74 for strike two Michael throws five pitches more than 10% of the time That is incredible We’re watching two pitchers today in Michael and Bassid that in some ways are very similar One two swing and a high pop up right in the middle of the infield Third baseman Areronado takes charge stepping onto the mount He makes an underhanded catch on the back of the hill Two down Tough play for the 10-time Gold Glover who climbed up the third base side of the mound had to go down towards second base off the slope to make the play And right on Q Miles Michaels throws a two strike pitch in a very hitable location That was a fourseam fast ball right at the top of the strike zone You could see George Springer frustrated after popping that baseball up Only nine pitches so far for Michael who’s very direct and trying to pitch to contact First pitch curve misses outside to Andres Jimenez Homeplayed umpire tonight is Clint Vondra Phil Cuzy at first Tony Randazo is at second base and Dan Bolino umpire’s third The 10 down and in Jimenez moved the back left leg out of the way He almost got hit on the knee with that pitch Two balls no strikes Jimenez with a hit yesterday for the Blue Jays He went one for four Also had a sacrifice bunt in the 10th Next pitch is in there with a change up two and one It must be really face really tough facing Chris Basset or Miles Michael You really never know what pitch you’re going to get Like you said two guys that throw all kinds of different pitches 2-1 down and in ball three Heard from some opposing hitters or managers when facing Basset that they found it better to look or guess at zones than pitches because there’s so many options They sit outside rather than sit on a certain fast ball 3-1 Jimenez swing and a highf fly ball deep right field ranging back Berles looking up at the wall it’s gone [Applause] Jimenez with a first inning three-run shot and the Blue Jays jump in front three nothing on Jimenez’s first since the fifth game of the year what a big swing for Andre Jimenez the sequence went curveball slider change up slider here and then he got his pitch a four seamer right down the middle and he didn’t miss it What a swing He has looked like a different guy since returning from the injured list and that’s the cherry on top Three nothing Blue Jays in the first as Ernie Clement takes a fast ball for strike one Andre Jimenez wearing quite an oversized jacket for him Walks down into the dugout Looks like Ernie Clement in that jacket 01 Ernie takes outside One ball one strike Man that’s got to feel good for him Just smashing that four seam fast ball right down Broadway Next pitch inside Almost hit the left elbow of Clement Two and one Well it feels like a long while ago now but Andre Simenez was the hottest Blue Jay to start the year Three homers in the first five games Next pitch fouled off by Clement two balls two strikes and then went through a real rough patch before he went on the injured list But since returning he’s had a hit in all but one game And he’s come up with some big extra base hits like that one Two- two pitch swing and a sharp grounder to third Picked up on one hop by Aronado who whizzes it over to first to end the inning Three-run Top of the first four the Blue Jays on three hit singles from Bo Bashette and Alejandro Kirk before an Andre Jimenez threerun blast Three nothing Blue Jays Middle of one baseball Racing back Santander leaps at the wall and he made the catch On Sportset 590 the band and the Sportsnet radio network Andre Jimenez with a first inning three-run homer and the Blue Jays lead three to nothing before Chris Basset throws a pitch Bottom of the first inning Basset on the hill waiting for Mason Win to get into the batters box for the St Louis Cardinals Right-hander looks out at Basset a fellow righty And the pitch is called a strike Nothing in one for Chris Basset Start 14 on the season 6 and3 with a 356 earned run average 36-year-old 6’5 from Ohio 01 Curve ball is lined fouled over the short wall into the netting down the left field line Nothing and two You had mentioned this right at the start of the broadcast Basset coming off maybe his best start of the season Seven innings a one-run ball against the Philadelphia Phillies 02 pitch down and away with a sweeper One ball two strikes [Music] already A couple shakes of the head from Chris Bassid on his first miss of the day Right on right Here’s his one-two to Mason win Swinging a miss Strike three Elevated cutter outer half and he gets win for the first out That’s a perfect pitch right there You could see Alejandro Kirk set up and away Just hits the location hits the glove for the first out of the inning You can tell he’s on right now I know a small sample size but things are looking pretty good for Chris Basset Welcome to the Timbermark broadcast booth That’s Chris Laru I’m Ben Schulman Show Ali our host and producer Tom Young our technical director First pitch strike to Ivon Herrera DH today for the Cardinals And the guy who hit that big three-run shot in the eighth that briefly gave St Louis their only lead yesterday A one broken bat soft liner off the glove of Basset charging from second Jimenez has no play That ball was lined right at Chris Basset So he stuck the glove out and kind of the worst case scenario Wouldn’t better if he whiffed entirely or if it hit it more flush but it just nicked the glove of Basset So it’ll go as an infield hit for the DH Yeah it was a good pitch It was a sinker in off the plate Just blew up Herrera’s bat But as a pitcher if the ball comes at you it’s so hard to just let it go Even though Chris Basset knew that ball was going right to Ernie Clement he tried to to make that catch but tipped off his glove And Herrera ends up at first base And now first pitch way high and outside to Brendan Donovan First left-handed hitter in the lineup today for St Louis Four different lefty batters against Bassid out of nine 10 called to strike One and one I was interested to see considering teams stack all of their lefties usually when Bassid is in a game that this was the day Olly Marmal picked for Lars Nupar to have an off day He was the top of their order hitter and a lefty batter yesterday A 1-1 in the dirt with the splitter Two balls and one strike Three nothing for the Blue Jays Bottom of the first inning Ivon Herrera on first The long-haired German-born left fielder Brendan Donovan hits And there’s one out The two-1 pitch swing and a highf fly ball out to right center field Should be playable for one of Rodner’s straw and straw makes the catch as Roden got out of the way last second Two down That’s a scary situation out there You see the right fielder and the center fielder both calling for it You can see them screaming “I got it I got it.” And then at the last second Allen Rhoden veers off to the right Center fielder’s ball all day long but when you’re both screaming “I got it I got it.” It’s hard to hear the other person Those two haven’t played a ton together Typically rode in place against righties straw against lefties And in fact this wasn’t supposed to be the outfield configuration when the initial lineup came out but there were some late switches Chris Passet steps off the hill Seems like he might be having some sort of pitch issue Wilson Petrus steps out and back in Nathan Lucas was supposed to be in the lineup today hitting seventh playing right but he was scratched late Roden bumped up in the order a little bit moved from left to right They brought Class down in the order and they brought Straw into the lineup He took over center with Class moving to left First baseman Wilson Contras takes strike one from Chris Bassid Runner on first Two outs three nothing Blue Jays Bottom of the first inning Andrez a big right-handed hitter awaits an 01 Slow curve Strike two Felt like that curveball was really on for Chris Bassid in his last start Philly’s also had a lot of lefties and it’s a pitch he’ll use to lefties a ton And asks for time One other change We might not have time to delve into it right now with two strikes and two outs But Basset who had moved to the third base side of the rubber to start the season moved back to the first base side a more familiar spot for him last start after a couple rough outings before it And he remains on the first base side of the rubber right now in the set His O2 line foul back into the screen behind home plate Base runner Herrera was off on the pitch He’ll jog back to first I think there was a big deal made of that Chris Basset going from the third base side to the first base side But it’s a it’s a pretty normal thing for pitchers One day you feel comfortable on the third base side one day you feel comfortable on the first base side Obviously Chris is is more comfortable these days on the first base side of that rubber 02 hit on the ground to short Picked up there by Bette He’ll throw the short way to Jimenez at second and end the inning No runs on a hit for the Cardinals One left and it’s three nothing Blue Jays after an inning at Bush Stadium You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your top of the second inning 789 for the Blue Jays to hit this inning Starting with Allan Rhoden who swings at the first pitch and lines it foul Nothing in one Thick lines eye black on for the left-handed hitting Allen Rhoden white arm sleeve on his right arm to match his white batting gloves and light colored cleat So one takes a sinker called the ball Probably had the zone One fan right behind the plate put his arms in the air and I think he was right It’s one and one Rhoden Stra Class hitting the 1-1 pitch to Rooden Misses outside Two and one And the Blue Jays offensive outburst over the last couple weeks has had a lot to do with guys in the middle of the order Also guys hitting 7 8 9 As Roden hooks it on the ground to first picked up by Wilson Contrus He’ll hand it off back to Michael who steps on the bag One out Well that’s been the most impressive thing It’s not just Bob Bashett Anthony Santandere Vladimir Guerrero Jr It’s actually just everybody in that lineup contributing And I mean nobody better than Alejandro Kirk right now Four for five in last night’s ball game He is on quite a roll One out and Miles Straw hits Mentioned this in the bottom of the first Straw was not originally in the lineup today the pitch outside ball one He’s been mostly saved for when Vara was injured or hitting against lefties Those were the main starts for him I guess Vo injured again as the one misses outside 2 and 0 But specifically more the first stint because the Blue Jays didn’t have Jonathan Claw at that point who’s now playing a fair bit of center field when there is a righty on the mound Righty Michael steals home and it’s fouled back by Straw Two and one This second inning is presented by Bet 365 At Bet 365 you can bet on popular markets like hits home runs in total bases Download the app and find out why it’s never ordinary at Bet 365 19 plus play responsibly Ontario only Two-1 lifted out to center field Ranging back toward the track Victor Scott makes a one-handed catch and there’s two outs That ball just kept going and going a slider over the middle of the plate Miles Straw hammered that thing to center field And Victor Scott catches that thing on the warning track almost up against that wall in center field We’ve seen one home run so far this year from Miles Straw playing in his 55th game of the season We’ve also seen one home run from the batter right now Jonathan Class He had his first of the year yesterday The pitch inside ball one What a swing that was by the way Holy cow Took a 98 mph fast ball from Ryan Hley one of the top closers in the sport out of the yard to right center 415 ft One pitch cut on and miss Good change up One and one It wasn’t only the swing It was It was the It was the game It was the moment It was the pitcher on the mound All those things make that such a difficult moment One-1 pitch Fouled off Hit off the end of the bat One and two and he just took that big fast ball and said “I got you.” Tied the game at the time at four And then the Blue Jays got one in the 10th and Jeff Hoffman locked it down not allowing the automatic runner to score One two high two balls two strikes 31 pitches so far for the right-hander Miles Michaels Two-2 count against Class A Two outs and the base is empty the wind and the pitch Curve called strike three Great pitch just dropped into the top of the zone to freeze Class for Michael’s first strike out of the day A one two three Top of the second Blue Jays still on top three nothing at Bush Stadium Bottom two coming up next You’re listening Blue Jays baseball brought to Jays baseball Swinging a highf fly ball deep left field at the wall It’s gone on Sportset 590 the band and the Sportsnet Radio Network Bottom of the second Chris Bassid kicks an offers to Alec Burles and the first pitch is on the corner Strike one Alongside Chris Laroo I’m Ben Schulman Three nothing The Blue Jays leading the Cardinals 567 in the order for St Louis this inning Starting with Berles Right on left The pitch swing and a grounder hit near third Picked up by Barger who stepped in front of Aette to make the play He tosses over to first One out How about that sinker from Chris Basset Two really good sinkers against Berles Starting on the inside part of the plate and then just leaking back to the outside part of the plate The fast ball’s pretty good tonight so far For all the pitches he throws over 40% of them will be sinkers on pretty much every start that Chris Bassid has His pitch to Nolan Areronado inside with the cutter Aronado twists out of the way Ball one Bassid may be looking for a measure of revenge today He has not pitched against the Cardinals since 2023 the opening series of that season which was his Blue Jays debut 10 pitch at the knees No it’s not called a strike It’s two and0 Chris Bassid staring in at home the home plate umpire probably wondering where that pitch was That was a strike Alejandro Kirk with a little head head tilt He’ll save the big head tilts for later in the game when you don’t have to massage the relationship with the ump as much Two pitch hit on the ground up the middle and into center field But for Chris Basset last time he was at this ballpark you go back to the opening series of 2023 his Blue Jays debut he allowed 10 hits and nine earned runs in three and a third innings pitched A careerhigh runs allowed It was not exactly a a big opening to his Blue Jays career or if it was it was in the wrong way and it really would not be an indication of how he pitched for the Blue Jays where he’s been mostly very successful with Toronto Pitch to Nolan Gorman High ball one [Music] Now that was the first ever time Alejandro Kirk caught the complicated mix of Chris Basset They’ve worked together a ton since 10 outside and high Two balls no strikes And he’s actually not throwing as many pitches now as he did back then He actually threw 7 8 nine pitches in a game Now it’s more like fiveish A lot easier to catch especially if you know a guy Yeah his his pitch is 678 He might throw him once or twice a game just to kind of put it in your brain but not much for more than that 200 eye outside with the sinker which he’s wavered with his command on in the last couple at bats It’s 3 and 0 3 with the fast ball Ball four Four pitch walks Some pretty big misses All on the sinker for Chris Basset And with one out the Cardinals have runners on first and second Yeah he fell behind Nolan Aronado Two and0 And then he falls behind Gorman there Well actually walk Gorman on four straight pitches So that command right now is a little bit shaky at least over the last seven pitches or so Three nothing Blue Jays Bottom of the second and the pitch to Pedro Pahz the catcher for St Louis No it’s going to be a step off first Big burly right-handed hitter Thick beard connects to his mustache and he bounces his lead left foot off the dirt slightly First pitch fouled away Sinker back in the zone to get ahead nothing and one That’s how it’s done right there 93 Good sink on that fast ball in the inside part of the plate just tying up PZ I know he just got back into the zone but now he wanted to he wants to dive out of it because Pas chases a ton 34% chase rate Bottom fifth of the major So Juan never mind Go right on the corner with a sinker Strike two Well even if you swing the bat there the only thing you could really do is probably either foul it off or or break your bat But it’s a good pitch That’s pitcher’s pitch down and in Hassid going to his right hip Just saw a Kirk shake off a side and now they seem to be in agreement Two on one out pass It looks back to second at Aronado and his O2 to Pahets Low ball one I could be wrong but that’s how we used to do it back in the day The catcher would just shake his head and it would it would tell the pitcher hey shake So you kind of throw the throw the hitter off a little bit So as a pitcher you just you just shake your head if the catcher shakes his head I thought maybe just because Basset sometimes calls his own pitches maybe Kirk was waving off a Basset sign but that seems more likely Kirk steps out from behind home plate right now giving some signals to the defense Wouldn’t expect a bunt here with two strikes Pah did lay down a two- strike bunt at one point recently Came back in the Dodgers series One-two pitch Curve ball misses down and away Two balls two strikes I think that’s one thing I’m going to enjoy most about this this game tonight Chris Basset has that really slow 126 breaking ball Miles Michael has that really slow 126 breaking ball as well Michael’s is a little bit harder at 7475 but still fun to watch the hitters reaction Pass it more 71 to 73 22 sinker hit on the ground to Ward Short Charging in Bette throws back to second one Jimenez to first for an inning ending double play 643 the Blue Jays turn it Jimenez had to deal with the slide of Gorman going right into his midsection and still made the play to end the inning No runs on one hit no errors one left and it’s three nothing Blue Jays through two innings You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust your local Crown Rust Control Center Visit crown.com Crown Canada’s number one rust protection Three nothing Blue Jays as Bo Bashette takes strike one from Miles Michael Second time through for the top of the order in the top of the third 01 curve down and away Michael originally a seventhrounder by the Padres’s out of a Florida University in 2009 Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale 1-1 bounce to the plate two balls one strike Not a ton of major leaguers come from there but JD Martinez played at Nova Southeastern The reliever Mike Fires who might be better known as a whistleblower these days but was a major league pitcher as well He pitched there 2-1 Swing and a miss Big hack by Bashette on a fast ball Two and two Wouldn’t fires be best known for that weird mustache he had that one year I think once once he told the world what the 2017 Astros were doing that’s your legacy for good But a pretty good pitcher you know before all that 2-2 swinging a foul off to the right into the seats out of play Things though did not go very well for Michaelis early in his major league career He came up with the Padres’s in 2012 Got hit right from the jump First batter he ever faced was John Carlos Stanton Not a great matchup He homerred first at bat and he generally struggled to get regular time with the Padres’s 2-2 swing and a bouncing ball up the middle Hit to the shortstop win Gathers tosses to first One out Had a little time with Texas after he was DFAD by the Padres’s Got released from Texas where Michael’s career really turned around which seems to be a more common thing these days than ever is he went to Japan pitched three years with the Yomi Giants also known as the Tokyo Giants 2015 to 17 had a sub3 RA all three of his seasons Pitch to Addison Barger Misses low Ball one It’s really tough to pitch there in Tokyo for the Giants Standards are so high Think about the Yankees and then think about even higher standards than that Next pitch called to strike one and one So it’s pretty cool that he was able to go there pitch for the Yamiri Giants and actually have success as a foreigner It’s really really rare hard laid that into a four-year deal as the 1-1 is lifted very high down the right field line by Barger Moving over into foul territory Berles leading over toward the seats That one a couple rows deep He had no play Berles although he nearly ran over the attendant who was trying to get out of the way It’s one and two So he goes to Japan comes back 2018 leads the National League in wins with 18 career best 283 earned run average Threw over 200 innings I mean he was really really good in his first year Got a four-year deal ahead of 2019 Signed another deal before 2023 One two pitch called Strike three Curveball on the outside corner gets Barger Second strike out of the day for Michael and his second out in the top of the third Well like I mentioned that curveball is very similar to Chris Bassets It’s just a little bit harder That one was 77 but such a big break on it Starts above the strike zone and ends up at the bottom of the strike zone just clipping the clipping the black on the outside corner A tough pitch to hit Two outs in the pitch to Alejandro Kirk is another curveball that drops in for strike one Things seem to be trending the wrong way for Michael in his mid30s 01 pitch good sinker for a strike nothing in two He was an all-star in 2022 but then near five erra in 2023 and an over five earned run average in 2024 despite the fact he was the opening day starter for the Cardinals But this year he’s bounced back His O2 bounced down and away One ball two strikes Ben I have to say though what’s up The fact that he’s 36 and still in the major leagues is pretty impressive It really is And if he he maintains an RA around four which is what he came into this game with One-two pitch hit high in the air out to right center field and Victor Scott makes the catch If he keeps this up probably a lot more baseball going forward for Michael He’s retired the last seven he’s faced but because of the first inning three-run shot by Jimenez still three nothing Blue Jays Middle of the third You’re the right price so you won’t find yourself out in left field on your next DIY project Game on home team Timbermart is Canada’s building center I’m Ben Schulman alongside Chris Larouche Show Ali our host and producer and Tom Young our technical director number nine hitter in the Cardinals order Victor Scott II leads off the inning A lefty swinger in an open stance The pitch from Chris Bassid swing and a high-fly ball out to right field hanging up for Allen Rooden Moves toward right center calls for it and makes a one-handed catch above his head One out Another pretty good cutter from Chris Basset This one at the top of the strike zone Just misses the barrel of Scott He gets jammed a little bit and hits a weak fly ball out to right field [Applause] Chris Bassid really efficient thus far Once through the order and with seven outs already he’s thrown 29 pitches Mason Win up to the plate Top of the order hitter and the pitch outside ball one We talked a little bit about this yesterday When drafted in the second round in 2020 by the Cardinals as a two-way player in Texas it was interesting to hear some of Bobby Wit Jr’s comments about it Cardinals and Royals matched up recently in a battle of Missouri 10 pitch called to strike one and one And it is a battle of Missouri cuz even though they’re in Kansas City they’re in Kansas City Missouri rather than Kansas And Whit talked about facing Mason Win the pitcher in high school 1-1 swing and a high pop up in between home and first the first baseman today Ernie Clement moves in to make the catch on the infield grass Two down He said quote “I always remember he could hit he could play shortstop had a cannon but when he was on the mount he was just so much above He was throwing 98 99 as a junior or sophomore So second or third year in high school It was one of those things which said where it’s like he’s kind of a smaller dude but he’s throwing hard He’s just a true athlete End quote It sounds like if he had Joe’s pitching he probably would be in the big leagues right now too Two outs in the pitch to Ivon Herrera Takes it all the way for strike one So the only thing that I would be concerned with is the height 5 foot n and again this is no slight against people who are 5 foot n but when you’re pitching and you’re shorter that ball comes in just a little bit flatter doesn’t have as much life on it 6’5 Chris Basset tosses in a curveball that was close a ball outside one ball one strike so it’s much easier to barrel up much easier to hit I’m sure that the Cardinals thought about that they had to have yeah because you don’t give up on a guy throwing 98 99 miles an hour I don’t care how good you are defensively 1-1 I two balls one strike Well I can tell you if Marcus Strowman’s listening right now Chris he’s not happy with you Well that there’s obviously exceptions but Marcus has a ton of sink on his fastball I’d have to see I’d have to see win pitch before I make any judgments 2-1 is outside Three balls and one strike Not to mention things have worked out very well for him anyway So this is probably the right choice And he’s such a good defender at short you couldn’t really have him play short and hit and pitch as we saw with the brief time Otani played outfield when he first got to the majors 3-1 pitch tagged by Herrera deep to left field but it’s going to hook foul into the seats It’s three and two It this is the opposite thing but it’s kind of like when I was catching in high school and college scouts would always come up to me and say “Why are you catching You’re 6’5″ 175 lbs You should be on the mound You should not be catching because catchers are supposed to be 5’9” Next pitch is bounce foul 3 and2 still Obviously catchers now are a little bit bigger They tend to be you know 6’2 63 but back back when I was about to be drafted in high school most catchers were below six feet Well now they don’t necessarily ask ask them to play every game So you can be you can have a little bit more weight on your knees if you’re in there 90 times instead of 130 3-2 swing going to miss Strike three Got him on a curveball that dip below the zone for the second bassid strike out of the day and his first one two three inning Three nothing Blue Jays as we go to the fourth You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball Brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rush Control Center Network Radio SiriusXM 89 and the SiriusXM app From inseason fantasy baseball management to helping you prepare for your fantasy football traps fantasy sports radio is helping you dominate channel 87 and on the SiriusXM appet radio network George Springer leading off the top of the fourth inning Three nothing Blue Jays And the pitch hooked foul on the ground Nothing and one Miles Michaelis the pitcher for St Louis A bit of history against the Blue Jays And some history with George Springer Springer is 5 for 10 against Michaels in his career with a home run A one down and away One ball one strike for Michaels overall This is his fourth start of his career against the Blue Jays He’s got no decisions no wins or losses 1-1 called to strike one and two and a six erra in the previous three starts [Music] Right-hander facing the plate takes a deep breath and is one-two to Springer Curve in the dirt How about that A two- strike pitch way out of the strike zone That’s really something he’s focusing on doing For a while being all over the zone rather than outside of it was a big help to Michael but the the way the game is played I feel like has worked against him two- two pitch down and away Three and two Even going back to 18 when he returned to the majors guys probably weren’t selling out for homers as much as they are at this point Full count offering to Springer Swing and a hot shot up the middle A base hit into left center field on the ground Cut off by Scott It’s a hard hit single for George Springer to lead off the fourth Just a really nice swing hits that ball right back up the middle barrels it up I mean he continues to stay hot A sinker down He just goes down and gets it Springer ripped it 105 mph back through the infield He’ll take a lead off first He’s got seven stolen bases this year without being caught Pitch to Andres Jimenez Bounced toward first base It hit off the front foot of Jimenez It’s a foul ball Jimenez hunched over testing out that right foot As he gets loose we can let you know that this fourth inning is presented by Bet 365 Download the Bet 365 app for today’s baseball odds and find out why it’s never ordinary at Bet 365 19 plus play responsibly Ontario only The 01 misses down and in Might have actually had the zone but he missed the spot so much it made it look like a ball One ball one strike I think Pah has actually took that ball out of the strike zone That was a weird frame job Hes typically with quite a strong defensive reputation Step off throw to first and Springer dives back in Pah started the year as the backup catcher but when Herrera went on the injured list they were so impressed with how Pahz handled his responsibilities behind home plate that they kept him in and decided to make Herrera an everyday DH 1-1 curve in there Strike two Springer on first with nobody out The one-two to Andre Jimenez swinging a bouncing ball past the dive of the first baseman Contreras The second baseman Gorman throws to the pitcher covering Michaelis Up to second goes Springer A lot of credit to Gorman and especially Michaelis hustling over to cover there to make sure they got the out on the 41 put out Yeah that was a really tough throw for Gorman It was kind of like a quarterback leading a receiver Michael was sprinting to first base and he threw it at the first base bag Michael eventually got there and caught that baseball A really tough play Well Nor Nolan Gorman only has to drive about two and a half hours to watch Patrick Mahomes if he’s looking to work on his quarterback play Here’s Ernie Clement with a line drive to left field That’s down for a base hit in front of Donovan Springer had to wait He’ll advance to third First pitch swinging Clement gets on top of a high sweeper and it’s runners on the corners One out That’s too bad for the Jays George Springer had to had to wait kind of in between second and third You can see him tilting his head back and forth He wasn’t sure about that one but that’s a good job making sure that Brendan Donovan doesn’t catch that baseball He ends up at third base Still just one out in the inning Bernie Clement staying hot with a line drive And now Allan Rhoden looks to drive in a run Three nothing Blue Jays First and third one out The pitch outside with a change up Ball one John Schneider said before today’s game they’re looking for Allen Rhoden to get back to being himself The guy they saw early in the year the guy they saw in Buffalo and in spring training 10 Swinging a line drive left field Base hit Springer in to score Up to second goes Ernie Clement That’s looking a lot like the usual Allen Rhoden Dumps it into shallow left for an RBI single It’s four nothing Blue Jays in the fourth Well that’s got to be a good feeling for him It was a tough slider in on the hands and he was able to pull those hands through get the barrel to it and dump it into left field But it’s really hard to to be able to have good at bats when you’re not playing every day And I think that’s the hardest thing for Allen Rhoden In Triple A he plays every single day Really gets in a routine but in the big leagues he’s just rarely in the lineup First pitch to Miles Straws outside ball one We had seen Rooden get a lot of run his first stint early on but then he struggled a bit and when he was in Triple A Nathan Lucas caught fire and Jonathan Class A started hitting pretty well 10 to Straw called a strike one and one because Lucas is a left-handed hitter Straw’s a switch hitter There weren’t nearly as many opportunities now in the second goound for Rooden to get in there One-1 count on Straw One out The pitch chopped toward third base Aronado Glove steps on the bag one Throws to first for an inning ending 53 double play Blue Jays add on to their lead a run on three hits after singles from Springer and Clement Allen Rhoden with an RBI single makes it four nothing Blue Jays middle of the fourth You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball League pitcher Chris Laroo And the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning is a curve from Bassid that just lightly hits Brendan Donovan on the leg So Donovan will stroll down to first base Well Donovan was like a statue He saw that slow breaking curveball and he knew if it hit him it wouldn’t do much And that hit him right in the front of the thigh that right thigh Actually he’s probably lucky it didn’t hit him in the kneecap Yeah Four nothing Blue Jays Runner on first No outs Wilson Contreras up The pitch upstairs Ball one [Music] Contras entered tonight hitting .252 14 doubles seven homers and 39 RBI’s 10 foul tip and he doesn’t go down to a knee He falls to the seat of his pants on that swing It’s one and one Both of his feet actually came off the ground and he just fell right on his backside That is a big swing trying to go big fly on that fast ball on the inside part He resets himself batting from the right side 1-1 is hooked on the ground left field line Oh it’s a foul ball Just went wide to the bag One and two They are really trying to jam him Three fast balls in a row on the inside part of the plate That one actually a pretty good pitch off the plate That’s really the only thing Contras could do with that pitch Contras will walk back to the batters box Thirdyear Cardinals seven years with the big rival of the Cardinals the Chicago Cubs He’s the first baseman again today and his first year playing that position full time One two high with the cutter Two balls two strikes He’s always produced but he just had a rough year health-wise last year being a catcher Broke his arm on a swing that hit him in the forearm by JD Martinez Came back broke his right middle finger in August Played only 84 games 2-2 Fouled back Still two balls in two strikes So he goes to first base for the first time this year and the thought is an already good offensive player Well he’s just going to break out He doesn’t have to worry about all the stuff the catcher worries about Started the season 0 for 19 with nine strikeouts but he’s been trending up all year He’s asking for Pinear spray right now They’re going to give him a sec to get some grip back on his bat Entering this series he was hitting 310 with an 885 OPS in the month of June He had an ops in the 600s in March April high 700s in May Now really hitting his stride as the weather gets a little bit warmer in St Louis Yeah he’s still a really good player Obviously had a a month of of bad baseball but he’s looking pretty good right now 2-2 swing going to miss He got him Elevated the cutter to the perfect spot on the outer edge again And that’s Bassid’s third strikeout today One out That cutter is really good tonight Like you said just located that thing perfectly just above the strike zone You could see the frustration on Contr’s face Maybe thinking something slow there But that cutter is a pretty good pitch for him at least tonight Acid maybe looking now for a ground ball Runner on first Alec Berles up with one out The pitch high ball one Berles a second rounder by the Cardinals in 2020 out of East Carolina for the Pirates He was both a pitcher and a position player through 140 innings in college [Music] 10 swing and a liner left center field down for a base hit Racing toward it Straw making the turnaround second Donovan into third The throw will go back into second base So it’s runners on the corners One out for the Cardinals That was actually a really good job by Miles Straw throwing that baseball into second base Ernie Clement was standing there keeping that run at first base If Ernie Clement would have tried to get Brendan Donovan going to third base that run that runner rounding first base probably would have taken second base So you keep the double play in order You keep that runner at first base That’s a good job from a very good center fielder [Applause] Miles Straw settles back in straight away in center field as Nolan Areronado comes up He’s already got a single today Four nothing Blue Jays Runners on the corners one out Bottom four First pitch chop foul Third base side nothing and one 10 time Gold Glover six time platinum Glover as the best defender at any position in the National League an eight-time all-star and probably a future Hall of Famer Nolan Aronado 01 low one ball one strike Oh and not just a great defender also a five-time Silver Slugger at third base Sounds like a Hall of Famer to me Yeah Approaching 2,000 career hits nearly 350 home runs Pass it will step off before he deals Areronado a 1-1 Cardinals though really were trying to move Areronado to free up third base and free up some money in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year this year but they couldn’t get him moved in the offseason Now Basset steps off again That’s the second time in a row So if he was thinking about picking off at all that’s probably not in the cards anymore Berles on first Donovan on third The 1-1 is lined out to left field and down for a base hit Cut off in the gap by Class in to score Donovan all the way around to third It goes Berles Aronado with an RBI single to put the Cardinals on the board Four to one the Blue Jays lead Bottom of the fourth Well Berles was off on contact so he got the third base pretty easily But Nolan Areronado continuing to swing the bat pretty well in this series so far Hammers that baseball into left field A change up that was down Sorry a split finger that was down below that strike zone He was all over it Just golfing that thing on the line out to left To think he was nearly a Houston Astro and now he’s helping out a Cardinals team trying to push for the playoffs pitched to Nolan Gorman in the dirt ball one Oh I’m sure the Cardinals are are pretty excited that they didn’t move him Aronado had a five team list specific markets really wanted a competitive team as well and reportedly they had a trade in place to send him to Houston but Aronado vetoed it One pitch line fouled by Gorman Bounces into the netting down the right field line One and one [Music] First and third 4-1 Blue Jays One out Bottom of the fourth [Music] Aronado just got the RBI single They were trying to free up third because of this guy Nolan Gorman 1-1 Popped up Foul out of play One and two Gorman a natural third baseman playing second base today where he’s had to play a fair bit in the majors because Areronado has been at the hot corner so often for St Louis Left-handed hitter awaits a one-two swinging a high-fly ball to deep right field Roden in a jog It’s gone We are tied at four in the bottom of the fourth on a threerun homer by Nolan Gorman his third of the season Well it was almost like Nolan Gorman was expecting that cutter It was just mislo from Chris Basset They were trying to throw that cutter up and away just above the strike zone It ended up inside still above the strike zone but it was almost like Gorman expected that pitch He was all over it ripping it on a line out of here for a three-run home run After a fairly quiet first three innings for the Cardinals a fourrun fourth and there’s still only one out in the inning Pass it to Pedro Pahz Bounced toward third base charging in Barger Throws over the head of Basset over to first and there are two down Nolan Gorman a big prospect in a first round draft pick had a rough year last year so people have maybe forgotten about him a little bit but this is a guy who hit 27 homers in his age 23 season Something that only he and Albert Pooh have done in the history of the St Louis Cardinals Pitch to Victor Scott lined up the middle over the head of Basset into center field A base hit The out of town scoreboard is brought to you by St Louis Bar and Grill 100% Canadian owned and operated since 1992 It’s the return of the big clucking deal All you can eat wings are on now for a limited time Visit staint louis wings.com for details You are welcome AL East matchup at Fenway Park 2-1 The Red Sox are leading the Rays right now Roman Anthony with his first ever major league hit The top prospect in the game with a two-run double off of Ryan Pepio in the first Rays cut into the deficit on a Yanni Diaz RBI single Yankees are in action in Kansas City They’re leading five to one And obviously Aaron Judge homered in the first his 24th of the year Out of town scoreboard brought to you by St Louis Bar and Grill 4-4 Blue Jason Cardinals Bottom four A step off and throw to first and the speedy Scott dives back in head first Did you see where Romany’s where the where his family was sitting during that It was right next to the Red Sox dugout How about how about taking your on deck swings right next to your mom That’s pretty awesome pitch to Mason Win is called a strike Nothing in one So they didn’t get the the Jordan Love debut family treatment where in this state the Kansas City Chiefs put his family in the top row of the entire stadium Oh one pitch broken bat liner caught at short the bat all over the third baseline But Bette kept his eye on the ball and that will do it for the bottom of the fourth A fourrun frame for the Cardinals on four hits Most importantly the three-run homer to tie the game off the bat of Nolan Foreman They leave one on It’s 4-4 as we go to the fifth You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rush Control Center fifth inning A four spot for the St Louis Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth has tied this game Four runs on six hits for both these clubs Miles Michaels gets a second chance to win the ball game now as he deals the first pitch of the fifth to Jonathan Class Fastball right down Broadway Strike one Welcome to the Timbermark broadcast booth alongside former Major League pitcher Chris Laroo on Ben Schulman A1 high one ball one strike was nice of the Cardinals rather than getting their big four run inning in the eighth like they did yesterday they’re giving the Blue Jays more time to respond today it was Class who provided the response yesterday and he’ll take a curveball in two balls in one strike club a fast ball out of the yard off of Ryan Hley tied the game at 4-4 where we sit today 2-1 change up for a strike It was nice to see that for Class because he struggled a little against the fast ball so far this season in the big leagues Even after that home run yesterday batting 189 on the four seamer 280 on nonfast balls 2-2 swing and a fly ball Shallow right center field Scott charging and it’s down in front of him A base hit Bit of a bloop knock for the speedy claw but he’ll take it A leadoff single for the Blue Jays as the lineup turns over Well he showed off his power in last night’s ball game and now he gets to show off his speed standing at first base with nobody out in this inning A 4-4 ball game I’m sure he’ll try to get to second base with nobody out Three stolen bases on the year for Class He puts that red sliding mitt onto his left hand as Boette steps in The pitch down and away with a slider Nothing in one or pardon me One and0 Bette with a single today and a run scored That came in the first one pitch Swing and a liner down in right field A base hit Class hits the bag at second And he’ll have to stop there Bett hit it pretty hard and Class had to wait for it to get past him so he didn’t run into the baseball So it’s first and second nobody out Yeah he had to wait to see if Wilson Contras the first baseman would make that catch That ball wasn’t really close to Contras It actually almost hit Jonathan Claw So he didn’t get a great jump to second base but actually a good job by him making sure you’re still in scoring position There’s nobody out There’s no no reason to force it here Two on for big Addison Barger 4-4 game no outs Top of the fifth Michael with the pitch Herve low Ball one Barger 0 for two today Popped up to the shortstop Mason win and struck out looking on a curveball 10 offering Hit on the ground Foul A high change up One ball one strike In a second we’ll go to some interesting news on the St Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard News that will impact the Blue Jays next series One-1 pitch Swing and a liner headed to left field down the line Fair ball bouncing into the sidewall in to score Class up to third Bette and into second Addison Barger with an RBI double Blue Jays take the lead right back It’s 5 to4 in the top of the fifth Well if you’re Miles Michaelus you are pulling your hair out on that mound A soft base hit to lead off this inning to Jonathan Claw and then a very very soft base hit there Just about a foot fair down that left field line off the bat of Addison Barger Blue Jays score a run there They have runners at second and third and still nobody out in this inning for Miles Michaelis The big barger muscles are not just for 400t home runs They’re for mis hits that he still muscles into the outfield And now Alejandro Kirk in a huge spot All he’s done is come up in huge spots consistently all season Infield is in for the Cardinals Kirk already with a single and a run scored today He had a bit of a bloop back in the first [Music] The pitch swing and a bouncing ball to second base Fielding it Gorman looks off the runner at third and throws to first No one advances and there’s one out Well obviously Bo Bashette was waiting to see if that ball was going to get through I’m sure he’ll be going on contact here If there was one out in this inning he would have gone on that little weak ground ball to second base But with nobody out you stay put at third base and you take your chances here with the next batter That next batter is George Springer Singled up the middle in the fourth and scored Popped out to third in the first The pitch that will tip strike one So on the St Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard A couple hours ago it was announced that Aaron Nola of the Phillies suffered a setback in his recovery from his rib injury The thought going into the weekend series was that he could very well start against the Blue Jays 01 pitch grounded foul third base side Nothing in two But obviously that’s not going to be the case now And in fact some reporting that he’s not going to be available until the All-Star break Maybe even later than that That’s a long ways away That’s a a huge deal for the Philadelphia Phillies who are reeling at this point Allstar break is about a month away from now 02 outside one ball two strikes If they shut him down for a couple weeks then he’s still got a multi-week ramp up to go One two to Springer way high with the fast ball Two balls and two strikes All of our init scores and news brought to you by St Louis Bar and Grill Second and third for the Blue Jays who lead five to four in the top of the fifth Only one out infield in the 22 to George Springer Swing and a fly ball shallow left center field charging in from left Donovan makes the catch Bette tagging trying to score The throw cut off and Boette will come in to score Sack fly for George Springer was shallow but because Donovan had to cut in from left he was in an awkward angle to then turn his body back and throw it into the infield Yeah I think that’s the biggest thing And that’s why that’s such an intelligent play from Bob Bashette He sees Brendan Donovan running towards center field and like you said he couldn’t throw across his body get anything on that throw and Bobette would have been safe easily even if Wilson Contrus didn’t cut that baseball off at about the pitcher mound Again tough luck for Miles Michaels First pitch to Andres Jimenez low ball one At the end of the day half of these runs are because with Andre Jimenez up Michael threw a fast ball right down the middle And that is on him Jimenez’s three-run homer But pretty much all the other offense has felt like dinks and dunks for the Blue Jays One pitch outside two and0 But that’s what happens when you’re in the strike zone the the opposing team has the chance to get the bat to the ball and you never know when you put the ball in play You really never know what’s going to happen and that’s kind of the the problem tonight for Miles Michaels 20 ball to strike two and one and you’re going up against a Blue Jays team that strikes out as little as anyone in the majors So they’re going to make contact with those pitches in the zone and hits as many line drives as anyone in the American League 2-1 swinging a bouncing ball right side sliding stop Gorman on the grass pops up throws to first and it’s dropped around third base but stopping there is Barger really tough play for Gorman the throw wasn’t awesome but it wasn’t terrible and it was just a bit of a whiff there I think from Contras on an in between ball that might have skipped or might have just hit off of the bottom of his glove Oh I think that just hit off his glove Yeah he’s been he’s been pretty good pretty solid for the majority of his first season at first base but that’s a play that you have to make if you’re a big league first baseman Cardinals are lucky though that Addison Barger didn’t round third base and try to score on that play First pitch to Ernie Clement is chopped tied toward third Aronado cuts it off Awkward throw to first in time Ernie Clement wants a look at it Will at least hang around for a sec to see if the Blue Jays challenge John Schneider looking back into the dugout One more peak from Schneider and they will not challenge So a ground out to third ends the inning but the Blue Jays take the lead back They score two runs on three hits RBI double for Barger Sackfly for Springer 6-4 Blue Jays Middle of the fifth You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust Control Center is Ross Atkins and you’re listening to Blue Jays baseball on SiriusXM the Sports Net Radio Network Blue Jays baseball is presented by Crown Rust Protection Alongside Chris Laroo I’m Ben Schulman 6-4 Blue Jays And time asked for by Avon Herrera before the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth Chris Basset looking to bounce back after giving up four runs and the lead in the fourth Good news is his offense picked him up Pitch to Ivon Herrera Hit on the ground towards third Fielded chest high by Barger off to his left Throw over to first a little low but reeled in by Ernie Clement One out Well this is a big shutdown inning for Chris Basset Like you said his offense got back in this ball game got the lead for him yet again 64 So you got to throw strikes You got to pound that strike zone And he does a good job getting the first out there He’ll take on Brendan Donovan now One out bases empty The pitch called to strike That fourrun fourth inning started kind of quietly Maybe we should have seen the warning signs but he hit Brendan Donovan with a curveball to start the inning A one curve is hooked on the ground fielded at first by Clement Flips back to Basset for the out John Schneider had mentioned this before the game Ernie Clement just stepped in front of Andre Jimenez to field that ball Ernie is still new to first They’re telling him now that’s not your ball And that’s one of the nuance things about playing first that can be difficult for people who haven’t played there much When to go off the bag and when not to Yeah Right after that play ended you could see Chris Basset speaking to Ernie Clement Andre Jimenez had a couple words to say to him They got the out so it’s not the end of the world but you just have to let him know hey that’s an easy play for a second baseman Get back to your bag Pitch to Wilson Contrus outside Paul one Schneider had said Ernie’s played so much second and short and he has so much range that you have to remind him constantly unlike the other positions it’s not your job to go get every ball near you And that was actually a difficult play for him He’s really smooth really good with the glove obviously So it was probably easy for him but he it was a much more difficult play than it would have been for Andre Simenez who was standing right behind him 10 hit and on the ground foul one and one Also when they’re doing PFP in spring unless I’m mistaken Ernie Clint was not playing first base flipping over to pitchers very much There was probably more Alejandro Kirk and Tyler Heinman at first base than there was Ernie Clement over there Two outs in the 1-1 to Contraras Check swing on a curve Appeal down to first base No swings says Phil Cuz two and one Also I probably shouldn’t say this but you’re you’re just going through the motions during a period right They do a little bit of it during the season You’ll see it from time to time before a game maybe once a week 2-1 outside Three balls one strike Contras today 0 for two ground out and strikeout 3-1 pitch and he fouls it behind him into the brick back stop at Bush Stadium Three and two Looks like Wilson Contr is frustrated with himself there actually trying to swing at that pitch That was a good pitch It was a sinker inside on the black but on a 3-1 count you just you just let that pitch go The 3-2 hit on the ground up the middle cut off by Boette near the second base bag Throws on the run to first to end the inning Well that’s a shutdown inning for Basset Three ground outs to retire the Cardinals middle of the order in order and keep the Blue Jays up six to Net 590 the band and the Sportsnet Radio Network New pitcher into the ball game for the St Louis Cardinals Top of the sixth inning at Bush Stadium in St Louis Missouri It’s 6 to4 Toronto as John King the lefty makes his first appearance of the series King on to go left on left with Allen Rhoden Blue Jays leaving Rooden in there The pitch swing and a ground ball hit to second base Backhanded Gorman throws over to first Contrarus has it One pitch one out for King This pitching change is brought to you by Home Hardware the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays locallyowned genuinely Canadian Blue Jays chased Michaelis out of the game after five innings of nine hit sixrun ball They put the ball in play a lot and good things tended to happen Pitch to Miles Strawos bunt pulls it back and that pitch is down and away Ball one Eeronado was crashing If there’s one guy that I wouldn’t bunt against it’s probably Nolan Aronado Yeah 10 pitch Lifted foul right side Long run Berles makes the catch just before falling onto the sidewall Two down Well it looked like he was going to go crashing into the stands He put the brakes on right in front of that short wall in foul territory down the right field line Made a pretty good catch for the second out of the inning Two quick outs for John King who’s making his 26th appearance of the season He’s in his sixth major league season overall split between the Rangers and Cardinals He’s having a nice year Three and a half RA in 22 and 2/3 innings Pitch to Jonathan Class called the strike 0 and one He really does not strike guys out though It’s almost jarring to see considering the climate of today’s pitchers especially today’s relief pitchers 12 strikeouts in about 23 innings So one to Class A hit off the mound Nice stop by King Picked it on a hop off the hill Flips to first And that will do it for the top of the sixth John King comes in retires 789 in order sends us to the bottom of the sixth with the Blue Jays leading six to four You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rush Control Center streaming at sportsnet.ca and the Sportsnet radio network This Father’s Tom Young our technical director Following the game today Player and Barker have Blue Jays talk You can already text in your thoughts at 590 590 Leave your name and location Chris Basset back on the hill Deals to Alec Berles in a first pitch curve Misses low ball one Berles one for two today He had the first of four hits in that fourrun fourth inning All of the runs today for the Cardinals Blue Jays up by two leading six to four The 10 sliced foul off to the left It’s one and one This isn’t a shut down inning because the Blue Jays didn’t score in the in the top half but you still have to pound the strike zone You don’t want to walk the leadoff hitter Bring that tying run to the plate It’s Nolan Areronado on deck as well 1-1 curve clips the outside edge called strike one and two Interesting a couple of curves in this at bat because Berles hammers breaking balls hitting well over 300 with three of his five homers on them One two fast ball fouled off of his back ankle Berles stumbles forward into fair territory and now turns back walking around gingerly That one slammed into the outside of his left ankle It looked like it’s actually really tough to to foul a ball off your back leg and Berles does that right there That that’ll tell you how behind he was on that inside pitch from Chris Basset It was the front foot There you go We just got the replay I put on these glasses and I still can’t see One-two pitch Lind foul left side Still one and two [Music] Coming off a 20 double 20 homer season Berles in eight doubles five homers so far this year One-two pitch fisted out to shallow right field Moving forward Allan Rooden makes the catch One out That was a pretty good cutter on the inside part of the plate Just off the plate inside just jams Burles in a weak fly ball out to Allen Rhoden in right field for the first out of the inning That’s a big out especially with Nolan Aronado coming up to the plate He’s swinging the bat very well over the last couple of days [Applause] Aronado with two hits today First pitch hit on the ground to shortstop Picked up Bo Bashette He’ll toss over to first Two down Blue Jays in St Louis Let’s go over to the St Louis Barn Grillil on a town scoreboard That was smooth Ben Thank you And here’s here’s one we don’t do much The Canadian men’s national soccer team is in action today in a friendly match against Kotivoir also known as the Ivory Coast It is nil nil right now in the 32nd minute of that friendly Kotvar a very solid team First pitch to Nolan Gorman called a strike Nothing and one and Toronto FC’s Jonathan Asorio in the lineup today for Canada Two outs The 01 popped up left side of the infield Bob Bashette taking charge Makes the catch shallow on the left center field grass to end the inning Chris Basset has retired the last seven he’s faced and he’s kept the Blue Jays in front six to four as we go to the seventh inning You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local the seventh 6-4 Blue Jays Second inning of work for the lefty reliever for St Louis John King who deals to Bo Bette and misses down an in ball one Lefty King had a quick top of the sixth retiring the bottom third of the order in order is 10 to Bett swing and a liner foul One and one King a sinker baller Low to mid 90s with the sinker He’ll throw that about twothirds of the time Fills in the rest with a change up and slider 1-1 fouled away to the right again Three straight sinkers It’s one and two You mentioned the low strikeout rate of King for his career 149 strikeouts in 227 and a3 innings That might be the lowest strikeout rate I’ve ever seen Whoa Sinker runs up and in near the chin of Bett Hits off the back stop Bo leaned back and took a couple of steps backpedaling out of the box It’s two and two That’s scary I don’t care what the velocity is That was a fast ball at 94 mph up around the chin You could just see how uncomfortable Bobette is right now He’s back in the box though Kings 2-2 swinging a fly ball out to right field Moving back toward the warning track Berles reaches out for the wall He makes the catch a little bit before the fence One out That ball traveled really well out to right field Bob Bashette getting underneath it Maybe just a little bit too much Berles was about 10 ft from that right field fence So one out and Addison Barger to hit RBI double A bloop down the left field line for Barger in the fifth King offers and Barger breaks his bat on a bouncer up the middle That sneaks through into center field Gorman the second base was pursuing it Reached down for it but it just got past him and Barger’s got a two hit day Addison Barger broke his bat on that single up the middle There was a fast ball inside Addison Barger got jammed but that’s two soft hits for Addison Barger today And I guarantee he will take both of them Archer stopping at first And a meeting on the mound right now at Bush Stadium Molly Marl is going to take the ball from John King before Alejandro Kirk hits Runner on first one out 6-4 Blue Jays Top of the seventh And it’s a pitching change brought to you by Home Hardware the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays Locally owned genuinely Canadian Let’s go over to today’s host Here’s Show Ali Thanks very much guys Let’s check on that St Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard No hockey tonight in the NHL Stanley Cup final on an off day this evening But three games in and the Florida Panthers are up two to one in the series over the Edmonton Oilers Panthers hoping for two more wins before repeating as cup champs was a demolition of the Oilers in game three a 6-1 route The final score Brad Marshian becoming the oldest player to score in each of the first three games of a cup final and Sam Bennett adding his NHL playoff leading 14th goal of the year The teams now do have some extra time in Miami to get set for game four which will be Thursday night You can watch it as always on Sportsnet and the CBC Uh and we are at the end of the season more or less which means we have some award news Earlier today the winner of the Calder Trophy was announced It is handed out annually to the league’s top rookie Montreal Canadians defenseman Lane Hudson earning the first bit of hardware in his career Hudson earning 165 of 191 possible first place votes A runaway win Claims goalender Dustin Wolf 15 first place votes Sharks forward Mlin Celebrini taking 11 votes Hudson’s 60 assists matching Larry Murphy with the Kings for the most by a rookie defenseman in NHL history by his while his 66 total points trailing only three players for the most by a rookie bluel liner No rookie regardless of position uh has registered more assists for the Habs in a single season and Hudson is now the first Habs player to win the caller trophy since Ken Dryden won in 1972 Blue Jays baseball as always is brought to you by Crown Rust Protection And let’s get you back to the action with the call Here are Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo Thank you very much Oneon-one out top of the seventh inning Alejandro Kirk to hit with the Blue Jays leading six to four Into the game for the Cardinals the right-handed reliever Kyle Lehey who brings his 234 erra into this ball game He’s making his 29th appearance of the season Right He kicks and deals and Kirk takes a curveball high Ball one Ley four seamer slider sweeper curve change sinker misses down and away with a four seamer Two balls and no strikes He also throws all of those pitches Will throw the sinker the least at 8% the four seamer the most at 30% So everything is getting mixed in 20 swing and a highf fly ball deep right center field Moving back Victor Scott and Berles That ball is good into the bullpen for Alejandro Kirk Second homer in as many days It’s 84 Blue Jays in the seventh I did not think that ball was getting out but it just kept carrying out to right center And at some point a scouting report on Alejandro Kirk has to has to say say that he’s very good at going the other way Teams pitchers continue to throw him away and he continues to do damage That was a 94 mph fast ball up and away And yet again he hammered that pitch out of here for an 8-4 lead First pitch to Springer Misses down and away Ball one for Kirk His fifth homer of the season now up to 31 RBI’s on the year 10 swing and a liner bounces off of the shortstop win and drops in a shallow left Skipped right before him Springer is safe at first on a scoring decision that could go either way But Blue Jays don’t care They have a runner on here already up 8-4 And I would imagine that that’s a base hit That’s a tough play George Springer hit that ball pretty hard It was a short hop over there at shortstop Mason W probably doesn’t get George Spring at first base Even if he comes up with that ball I would give it a base hit They agree in St Louis [Music] Springer on first Pitch to Andre Jimenez High ball one So Springer now with two hits Kirk with two hits after the homer Barger with two hits The Blue Jays have 12 overall with only one out in the seventh 10 Jimenez fouls it back One and one Do you think people that are tuning in right now are thinking they’re doing it again Probably I mean they thought that 13 days in a row maybe even more than that It’s unbelievable how quickly and dramatically something has turned for this team 1-1 swing and a ground ball picked up at third Aronado throws over to second one Back over to first for an inning ending double play Blue Jays add to their lead though Two runs on three hits Another big homer from Alejandro Kirk makes it 84 for the Blue Jays at the seventh inning stretch in St Louis You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local play on Sportsnet 590 the fan and the sportset radio network Welcome to the Timbermont broadcast booth alongside former major league pitcher Chris Laru I’m Ben Schulman Show Ali our host and producer Tom Young is our technical director Blue Jays leading 8-4 after the two-run homer in the top of the seventh by Alejandro Kirk And now the fellow catcher Pedro Pahz will step in for St Louis Chris Basset out for the seventh inning Only really one bad inning for Basset that’s made the line look worse than the eye test says First pitch to Pahes is a curve first strike But either way this is huge They got a bullpen day coming up They got Francis starting in Philly They want to keep the bullpen rested A one pitch bounced one ball one strike Yeah And like you said really only one bad inning He gave up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but other than that he’s thrown five really clean innings Outside of the fourth he’s given up two singles in one walk 1-1 swinging a high pop up near first Ernie Clement crosses over the foul line and makes the catch Clement looking good over at first It’s his fourth different infield position in the last four games Well he made that one questionable play over there but they got the out That’s the only thing that matters Yeah he made it a tougher play but he still made the play Yeah One out here now in the bottom of the seventh Bassid on 80 pitches You could potentially dream of an efficient seventh where he has chance to go through eighth First pitch to Victor Scott swinging a miss is strike one Well you can bet that if he’s efficient in this inning he he already has one out and one strike he’ll go back in that dugout and say “I’m going back out for the eighth.” He is famously a hard guy to pull out of games which I think you want out of your starters Next pitch outside one and one Now Victor Scott is the nine hitter It’ll go back to the top of the order a fourth time through next time up But I feel like that Kirk home run might have changed the dynamic a little bit 1-1 inside two and one Yeah if it’s a 5-4 game 6-4 game I think that John Schneider probably brings in a bullpen arm a fresh bullpen arm But with a four-run lead why not let him go back out now We’re not there yet but couple more outs to go But here’s the 2-1 pitch coming the left-handed hitter Victor Scott First Scott asked for time Now the pitch high ball three disagrees with the call Looked like it was a little bit high That’s a good bit up 3-1 pitch down and in ball four That’ll be a one out walk to Scott Basset still shaking his head Every once in a while you’ll see him just lose the strike zone That last that last pitch there was a sinker Really wasn’t near the strike zone And even that previous pitch the one that Chris Bassid you could hear him saying “That’s not up That’s not up.” That pitch was up It was a good bit up So you’re John Schneider you probably start thinking about getting somebody loose here Yeah now with the walk 85 pitches First pitch to Mason Win outside ball one I think probably if another guy reaches here at the point where hey right this could be a close game again Win is 0 for three today Strikeout pop out lineup One pitch Win pops it up in between the mound and the plate Bassid wanted to catch it but Clement calls him off and makes the play Basset could have caught it but instead Clement with the catch Two down Well how about Alejandro Kirk running out there as well He was about a third of the way to the pitcher mound That would be a really tough play for him Luckily Ernie Clement comes running in and made that catch I mean I know we’re supposed to think pitchers can’t field all but that’s an easier play for Basset than Kirk Two outs Ivon Herrera to the plate He’s one for three on the day came up with an infield single back in the first inning A soft liner that tipped off Basset’s glove killing it in the infield grass 322 batter with a 958 on base plus slugging The pitch curve called to strike Here might be thinking about an all-star game His overall games have been limited by injury unfortunately but I would imagine he’s the the best candidate on this roster probably 01 Lifted very high to shallow left field Barger backpedals onto the grass makes the catch off to his left and that will do it for the seventh No runs no hits one left on the one out walk 84 Blue Jays go into the eighth You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust Control Center streaming on the Sportsnet app and the Sportsnet Radio Network Sports are all Jays Top of the eighth inning and a second inning of work for the reliever Kyle Ley Blue Jays lead off Ernie Clement Allen Rhoden and Miles Straw will hit this inning as well First pitch to Clement Swinging a miss Strike one We got a look at a conversation between John Schneider and Chris Basset on the Sportsnet television broadcast in between innings 01 check swing Pitch was low Appeal to first No swing One and one There wasn’t a handshake Yeah it was to be honest I’m going to say it was inconclusive a little bit though We We didn’t get a long enough look to really know One-1 swing and a fly ball to center field Moving toward right center Scott hunched over Makes the catch one out Yeah normally you’ll see a hug a handshake something like that that’s really conclusive as to if he’s staying in the game or not I didn’t see anything He took his hat off put the hat down on the bench Mason Flu Hardy’s warming up right now but he’s not really warming up He’s just kind of getting loose The Blue Jays have an interesting situation Blair Barker talked about it at length on Blue Jays Talk yesterday They’ll Blue Jays talk again today as Roden takes low ball one because of the issues they’re having with the back two spots of their rotation I mean the bullpen days have gone well but not having that starter one pitch called a strike one and one They have to find this balance where they’re not taxing the pen too much who have pitched a lot on the fourth and fifth start days but also they have to make sure the top three starters stay healthy as Rhoden loops the one-1 out to shallow center That’s down for a hit It’s Rhoden’s second hit of the day He’s got a one- out single Top of the eighth How about Allan Rhoden Didn’t hit that all that hard It was 95 on the inside part of the plate I’m pretty sure he broke his bat but just like Addison Barger he’ll take it every single time Two for four on the ball game for him How about that Seeing a lot of guys whether they went to Triple A or onto the injured list in back having a nice reset and maybe catching some of that contagious offensive outburst right now from the Blue Jays Pitch to Miles Straw called to strike nothing and one But on the pitching they they have to find a way to not overtax the relievers but they can’t even close to afford for any of their top three starters to go down And all those guys have logged a ton of innings So they got to walk that tight rope 01 low One ball one strike You know do you want to push Basset over a 100 and through an eighth inning That saves your bullpen coming up but is it riskier for Basset Vice versa do you want to bring in the pen now but then maybe have less available tomorrow and going forward One-1 pitch hit well deep left center field Moving back Scott onto the track or the edge of it at least to make the catch Roden retreats to first Two down I think my my answer to the basket question specifically tonight is how many stressful pitches did he throw He had a lot of stressful pitches in that in that bottom of the fourth inning But outside of that there really wasn’t many So I’m sure the arm is feeling fine The body is feeling fine Ultimately obviously it’s up to John Schneider and Chris Basset but I don’t think it would be an issue if he went out for the eighth inning Two down pitch to Jonathan Class A Low ball one Roden on first 8-4 Blue Jays Top of the eighth Having the four-run lead is helpful to the case of keeping Chris Bassid out there 10 chopped toward first base Hooks foul one and one One other small issue with the pitching situation for the Blue Jays It’s amazing how they’ve played throughout this stretch because they have these bullpen days their long guys their lowest leverage guys that might come in in an eighth or ninth up four They have to be saved We know Lowour and Turnbull are going to pitch tomorrow Next pitch hit on the ground to first again foul although a nice stop by Contras Count is one and two So if you’re going to go to the pen you might have to use at least a more of a medium leverage guy in a spot where you might go traditionally to a lower leverage guy It’s I don’t envy John Schneider right now because there’s so much that you have to think about logistically I mean having bullpen days once every four or five days is just it’s not ideal One-two pitch fouled back Still a ball and two strikes Maybe the issue is coming to a close soon We’ll see Spencer Turnbull tomorrow whether he starts or comes in after Lowour Sherzer’s pitching in Buffalo on Friday Adam Macko is set to make a start at Buffalo soon One two swinging a miss He got him Elevated the heater did Kyle Lehey to strike out Jonathan Class and end the inning Blue Jays with no runs on a hit one left take an 8-4 lead to the bottom of the eighth inning You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust Control Center streaming at sportsnet.ca in the Sportsnet Radio Network Be at the ballpark Wash for a Wish charity wash event This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball O2 swinging a miss strike three on SportsNet 590 fan and the Sportsnet Radio Network New pitcher for the Blue Jays as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning Mason Flu Hardy is on for Toronto with the Blue Jays leading 8 to4 Pitching change brought to you by Home Hardware the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays Locally owned genuinely Canadian Left on left flu Hardy deals to Brendan Donovan outside ball one I’m Ben Schulman alongside Chris Laroo We had our question answered whether they’d go to Bassid for the eighth or not They decided to go to Flu Hardy 10 called a strike One and one You can often tell when Basset is not happy with the decision He seems to be all right with everything that transpired there 1-1 sweeper hit foul one and two And like you mentioned I think I think it’s a good point to to kind of go over again You don’t want to wear out the bullpen those those those long relievers those middle relievers but you also don’t want to bury the top three starters That’s probably even more important arguably than those than those long guys One-two pitch up high two balls two strikes So I think this is a good move from Josh Sadder and Pete Walker here I mean you could certainly argue there are more options for them to draw up from the minor leagues in the bullpen than there are in the rotation They’re also expecting some relievers to get healthy sooner rather than later 2-2 fouled off the glove Still two balls two strikes And also there’s an off day on Thursday which I think is is pretty important when you’re thinking about bringing in these guys as well And on Monday And on Monday And then on the next Monday It’s a lot of off days for you Ben For me yes 2-2 is lifted Foul left side out of play Donovan leading off Contraras Berles behind him Really nice rookie season for Mason Flu Hardy He sporting a three and a half RA as he enters this appearance 2-2 again cutter fouled away 92 Feels like we’ve seen a little more 91 92 recently from Flu Hardy instead of 8990 Well when the calendar switches over to June that’s generally when you’ll see an uptick in velocity One two even 3 m an hour And we’re seeing that with Mason Flu Hardy even a couple miles an hour Two two again fing off once more Mid-season form I think the the saying goes Yeah [Music] [Applause] After Donovan hits we’ll take a look at the Bet 365 standings With Bet 365 you can watch thousands of live games build your own bet and you can even make a bet while the game’s still being played 19 plus play responsibly Ontario only Blue Hardy kicks and offers and it’s a foul tip into the glove of Kirk Strike three With one out we go over to those standings one final that affects two AL teams The Red Sox already beat the race today 3-1 So the Yankees lead the division 39 and 25 Blue Jays at 36 and 30 or four back Ray’s 36 and 31 4 and a half back Boston is 33 and 36 8 and 1 half back and the Orioles 26 and 39 13 and a half back Pitch to Wilson Contrus called to strike nothing and one Blue Jays currently hold sole possession of the top wildcard spot half a game ahead of the Rays and the Minnesota Twins Rays already lost today That’s why they’re half a game behind And the Twins look like they’re going to lose Down six to the Rangers 01 outside one ball one strike If you look on the St Lewis side They enter today four back of the Cubs for the division lead and a game and a half back of the Padres’s for the last wild card 1-1 pitch outside two and one It’s a big game for them as well Huge game National League in general has been a bit better than the American League this year but it’s a little more upper class lower class There’s more of a middle class in the American League Two-1 pitch grounded toward third Barger snags it Crow hop in throw to first Two down If you don’t win the vast majority of your games you will fall behind in a big way in the National League And the Padres’s in the third wild card spot have a better record than the Blue Jays in the American League’s first wild card spot Two out space is empty Alec Berles will hit for St Louis with the Blue Jays up 8-4 First pitch fouled off nothing and one And I guess now the National League knows how the American League wild card contenders have felt over the last 10 years or so A lot though of American League talent seem to flip over to the National League 01 rounded toward first dive by Clement It’s under him and into right field A base hit What comes to mind first and foremost is Juan Sodto staying in the same city but flipping leagues Obviously you had Max Freed go from Atlanta over to the Yankees but a fair amount of big ticket free agents were brought in to National League clubs The Mets being a big part of that Chicago Cubs got Kyle Tucker away in a trade from the Astros [Music] Now before Nolan Areronado hits it looks like Kirk is going to walk out to the hill and have a bit of a talk with Flu Hardy John Schneider coming out So this very well could be a pitching change for the Blue Jays He’ll take the ball from Flu Hardy and Chad Green is about to enter for the Blue Jays Eight to four Toronto leads Runner on first and two down in the bottom of the eighth inning It’s a pitching change brought to you by Home Hardware the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays Locally owned genuinely Canadian Let’s go over to today’s host here Show Ali Thanks very much guys Let’s continue checking on that St Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard We didn’t get to this yesterday but in the NFL which we don’t get a lot of updates from at this time of year but some free agent news as uh players sign deals with teams with mini camps beginning to gear up this week In Houston running back Nick Chub signing with the Texans on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaore Knee and foot injuries have limited Chub to 10 games over the course of the past two seasons He had returned from ACL MCL meniscus tears a few weeks into the 2024 season and then suffered a broken foot in week 14 and hasn’t played since So a fresh start for the former Brown star And if you missed it it is official for Aaron Rogers who put pen to paper with the Steelers That’s from the team themselves A one-year deal worth 13.65 65 million with incentives that could get it up to 19 a.5 million as the four-time MVP lands with Mike Tomlin and new Steelers wide out DK Metaf in Pittsburgh And we spoke about the Stamica final where the NBA finals are well underway Got underway with a real bang The Pacers taking game one with a literal last second shot made by Tyrese Hallebertton Game two was was a couple nights ago was wasn’t as close to Thunder blew away the Pacers 123 107 in game two to even the series at one game a piece League MVP Shay Gilis Alexander scoring 34 points in the win Alex Caruso with 20 off the bench Jaylen Williams 19 points for him in the win as well Game three will be in Indianapolis on Wednesday That’s tomorrow night in what will be the first Finals game in that city in 25 years Blue Jays baseball as always brought to you by Crown Rust Protection Let’s get you back to the action Here are Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo Thank you very much Show right-hander Chad Green takes over Two outs and a runner on first base Green will take on Nolan Areronado looking to finish off this inning While this game is a four-run difference 84 Blue Jays You can see how seriously the Blue Jays are taking it Looking to lock up this series [Music] The pitch swing in a deep fly ball out to left field going back Class A onto the warning track It’s gone First pitch heater hammered by Nolan Areronado His eighth home run of the season A two-run shot And it’s a close game again 8-6 the Blue Jays lead with two outs in the bottom of the eighth Well Nolan Areronado just ambushed that fast ball Almost like he was anticipating that fast guessing that that Chad Green was going to throw a fast ball in that situation It was a 95 mph four seamer above the strike zone and Nolan Areronado just gets enough of it to get it out of here for a two-run homer A big home run for the St Louis Cardinals in this ball game [Music] Just when you thought they were out of it they’re right back in it First pitch slider to Gorman called a strike Nothing in one It’s 86 Blue Jays Two out space is empty Bottom eight The bottom of the eighth was the big inning yesterday for the Cardinals turned a three nothing deficit into a 4-3 lead 01 swing and a liner out to right and that’s down Blocked by Allen Rhoden who was in between diving or not pulled up and plated off the stomach It’s a single for Gorman That’ll bring the tying run to the plate Well I don’t know if he dove if he could have made that catch but it was a good job of blocking that baseball keeping it in front of him keeping Gorman at first base because if that ball gets by him Gorman could have ended up at third base There are two outs in this inning though But that’s a nice play over there from Alan Rhoden Probably the right call leading by two not to take the huge gamble First pitch to Pahz a slider at 90 strike one Five home runs this year for Pedro Pahes If he hits a sixth we’ll be tied [Music] Green offers home Swing and a fly ball Shallow center Sprinting in Straw reaches out and makes the catch to end the inning The Cardinals inch closer Two runs on three hits The Nolan Aronado two-run shot makes it an 8-6 game in favor of the Blue Jays going to the ninth Top of the order coming up for Toronto You’re listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Ross Control Center Streaming on the Sportsnet app the ninth inning Blue Jays eight Cardinals six Chris Royoft into the game Right-handed reliever takes over to face the top of the order of the Blue Jays Roy Coft making his 13th appearance He’s got an RA above seven First pitch side armed into Boette Strike one Pitching change is brought to you by Home Hardware the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays Locally owned genuinely Canadian A one to bow inside One ball one strike I’m Ben Schulman alongside Chris Laroo Roy Croft sinker for Seamer cutter His pitch swing and a liner right field hugging the chalk It’s down foul just wide of that line That’ll make it one and two That might have been about 6 in foul There’s not much room down there in foul territory and it stayed in Multiple runs this inning would be big because after the Aronado homer Blue Jays have Jeff Hoffman up Already used him yesterday This would be a fourth outing in 5 days for Hoffman if they use him today bearded right-hander looks into Bette Roy Croft’s one-two inside two balls two strikes And if Jeff Hoffman is used today he’ll have tomorrow off for sure He’ll have that off day and he should be ready for that Philadelphia Philly series That important series coming up in Philly 2-2 Bounce softly toward third base Areronado charging bare hands tosses to first It’s not in time 10 time Gold Glover did everything he could but that’ll be an infield hit for Bo Bashette on a swinging bunt That’s vintage Areronado right there I love seeing him charge a baseball come hard in bare hand make a good throw over to first base but not in time to get Boette So Bette on first nobody out B’s third hit of the day and Addison Barger is up to the plate 86 Blue Jays Barger with hits in each of his last two at bats First pitch called high ball one This ninth inning is brought to you by New Pizza from Pizza Pizza Get a huge 18-inch double XXL three topping pizza for just $19.99 Bigger slices bigger bites Only a pizza actually Canadian The 10 popped up foul out of play off to the left One and one New reliever Roy Croft out of D3 Aurora University in Illinois He was a multisport athlete there Played a year on the men’s basketball team as their backup center 67 right He’s 1-1 Called to strike One and two He’s been up and down with the big club this year Broke camp with the Cardinals Pitched a little went down came back up for a lot of May went down and was called up yesterday for the series opener One two outside Two balls two strikes Doesn’t really use his height though Kind of throws high 3/4 arm slot Bends the legs quite a bit So I’m sure that 68 frame goes goes down to about a 62 frame after all of that 2-2 swing and a miss Strike three Got him on a 96 mph sinker One down That’s a pretty good sinker though A lot of movement downward Looked like a strike inside and then just dropped below that strike zone at 96 mph Tough pitch to to square up Great stuff for the right-handed reliever that was undrafted out of college went to play independent ball before getting into affiliated baseball He starts Kirkoff with a strike nothing and one Isn’t that wild A guy like him ends up in independent ball You’re throwing mid90s You’re 6’8″ 230 lb Why not give him a chance Then again were we watching Aurora University baseball I was not Yeah So I don’t I don’t truthfully know exactly what he was featuring in those days Step off and throw to first and a dive back in by Bashette A one shot foul over the screen right side out of play No balls two strikes Just another big day for Alejandro Kirk Two hits including a two-run homer Kirk is now hitting 320 on the season his on base plus slugging above 800 at 801 Time called behind home plate By the way when he won the silver slugger he hit 285 with a 787 OPS I’m not saying he’s going to win it again Unfortunately for him the home run leader in baseball is a catcher 02 swing and a foul again But it does seem like he’s trying to catch up to Cal Raleigh especially with that swing right there on the fast ball earlier today with that big home run A lot of good things going on in his life right now I’m not sure that’s a guy he can catch He won the platinum glove last year and he’s got 26 homers this year 02 fouled away Still no balls two strikes And he only gets even better when he plays the Blue Jays So maybe that’s why I feel that way By the way there is a new left fielder into the game for the Cardinals Ryan Valade has come in replacing Brendan Donovan Apparent injury for Donovan Left toe discomfort They didn’t specify which toe 02 pitch rolled over left side and it sneaks through in between short and third In the left up to second goes Bette Another hit for Kirk Didn’t exactly pummel it but it’s a third hit today Well that ball was almost hit directly at where a shorts stop should have been The St Louis Cardinals were shifting him up the middle and there was a bigger hole on the left side of the infield But again Alejandro Kirk just does a good job finding the hole and finding a way to get on base Two on one out 86 Blue Jays Hoffman is warming George Springer has a chance to sit him down The pitch called strike Springer’s two for three today with a sack fly mixed in the middle You just look up and down Who isn’t hot right now for the Blue Jays It feels like everyone’s got it going 01 way high One ball one strike And I I guess the most important thing is not every hit is scorched We saw that today with Addison Barger and a couple of other guys but the Blue Jays are just finding a way to get on base just like Alejandro Kirk there with that last base hit It’s pretty impressive 1-1 swing and a miss One and two They’re doing that thing David Hopkins the hitting coach had talked about in spring Sometimes you got to go up there looking to hit a homer Sometimes you’re looking to hit a ground ball to the right side Sometimes you’re looking to shoot the right field line Different ways and different guys contributing to the offense One two is grounded foul near Carlos Fabis the third base coach whose back is to home plate Still a ball and two strikes 19 pitches in the inning for the big right-hander Roy Croft Twoon one out and the one-two to Springer Foul tip strike three 97 with the four seamer elevated two down That’s a big fast ball A lot of life on that fast ball as well with that kind of high 3/4 arm slot He gets a little bit of run at the end and oh yeah that’s 97 mph by you He really saves that pitch for the strikeout He uses the sinker to set up the cutter or four seamer depending on how he wants to attack a hitter with two strikes Pitch to Andres Jimenez is a sinker on the corner Strike one Jimenez one for four today Three-run homer in the first Reached on an error in the fifth Next pitch Powell back in quickly Roy Coft ahead of him Nothing and two Looking ahead to the bottom of the ninth inning Victor Scott the nine hitter set to lead off Then you’ll have Mason Win and Ivon Herrera [Applause] 86 Blue Jays Two on two out 02 is lined and down in right center field Pette around third He’ll come in to score Going all the way to third is Alejandro Kirk And the Blue Jays have runners on the corners and two outs up nine to six thanks to the RBI single by Andre Simenez Well Andre Jimenez continues to swing the bat well ever since he came off the IIL You can see just how excited he is giving a double fist pump over there at first base But how about Alejandro Kirk going first to third Usually you see him pull up at second base but he just rumbles around second base Sees that that ball is almost in the gap and he makes it to third base with two outs in this inning You never know how that could factor in that extra 90 ft Right now Roy Croft is getting a visit from his pitching coach Dusty Blake before Ernie Clement comes up Could still be a spot where the Blue Jays would go to Hoffman It would still be a safe situation right now with the score at 9 to6 Again they would love to not use him if they can get another run in here Save Hoffman It’s not the end of the world you had talked about he’d be down tomorrow and then there’s an off day So you’d have him back for Philly but maybe you could get a little greedy and have him available tomorrow in a bullpen day and then still have him for Philly if the Blue Jays can tack on one more right now I think that’s the most important thing to remember There’s still a big game tomorrow 100% And the Blue Jays and John Schneider would love to have Jeff Hoffman available tomorrow For most teams the bullpen days are right off The Blue Jays have been very good in their bullpen days this year Pitch to Ernie Clement Yanked out and away to the back stop Bangs off the bricks and Alejandro Kirk races in to score That’s the value of Kirk going first to third He scores on the wild pitch up to second Goes Andre Jimenez It’s 106 Blue Jays Well there’s letters behind home plate on the brick It says Bush Stadium and I think it hit the corner of one of those letters and went directly at the St Louis Cardinals dugout and that allowed Alejandro Kirk to score from third base If it doesn’t hit one of those letters he’s not scoring Now Clement drives the 10 out to center but it’s a liner right at Victor Scott who crouches to make the catch and end the inning The Blue Jays add on two runs on three hits RBI single Andre Jimenez and Kirk using his legs to score on a wild pitch Toronto up 10-6 middle of the ninth You’re listening to Blue Jays Baseball brought to you by your local familyowned Crown Rust Control Center streaming Cardinals 10 to6 as we head to the bottom of the ninth inning at Bush Stadium Don’t forget we do have Jay Talk tonight Blair and Barker have the postgame show this evening Jeff will throw out the data and messaging rates may apply Blue Jays baseball as always brought to you by Crown Rust Protection Again the Blue Jays lead the cards 10 to6 as we head to the bottom of the ninth inning at Bush Stadium With the call here Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo Thank you very much Joe The Blue Jays not going to Jeff Hoffman because they’re up four They’ll stick with Chad Green for the bottom of the ninth His first pitch to Victor Scott fouled away nothing and one This copyrighted broadcast is presented by authority of Rogers Blue Jays Baseball Partnership and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form And the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of Rogers Blue Jays Baseball Partnership or the Sportsnet Radio Network 01 lifted out to shallow left center and Bo Bette back there to make the catch There’s one out We’ve already talked about it a little bit but it is big at least for now to potentially not use Jeff Hoffman Yeah because if you have to use him tonight like we talked about earlier he’s definitely down tomorrow And then fortunately the Blue Jays have that off day in between now and the Phillies series So he does get the two off days but you can’t use him tomorrow You have to remember that tomorrow is a very important game First pitch to Mason Win called high It looked like it had the zone Ball one But it’s good that Chad Green got back to that dugout stayed ready I’m sure Pete Walker ran right over to him after that last inning and said “Hey stay hot Stay ready in this dugout right now.” Next pitch called to strike 96 on the outer edge One and one A lot of people contributed to it in that two-run top of the ninth One-1 pitch Swing and a grounder up the middle Fielded Andre Jimenez and he will eat it was thinking about throwing on the run Didn’t have a good handle on it Plus the speed of wind that goes for an infield hit on just a perfectly placed soft roller over the mound Yeah I think that would have been a tough play even even if a slower runner was running But Mason W has a ton of speed burning it down that first baseline Andrez just decided to put that ball in his back pocket I was going to say a lot of different guys helped them score those two runs and we’ve come to expect great offense great defense or at least great at bats from Alejandro Kirk How about his speed being the reason that it’s not a save situation going first to third on a single and then scoring on a wild pitch Pitch to Ivon Herrera outside ball one It’s less about the wild pitch because that was a wild pitch that almost if not everyone on in baseball would have scored on But being at third for that wild pitch was the big play One-on-one one out 106 Blue Jays The pitch slider called high 2 and 0 And I think the thing that we have to think think about and remember is at that point in the ball game it was a it was a 96 ball game A lot of guys would just stay at second base and be content with being at second base but not Alejandro Kirk 200 lined out to left and it’s a fair ball picked up on a hop by Class A First to third goes the speedy Mason Win Backto back hits runners on the corners for the Cardinals with only one out And how important is Alejandro Kirk’s run now Takes that game from a 96 ball game to a 10-6 ball game And St Louis has runners on first and third now with one out Don Schneider’s kind of moving around in that dugout Pete Walker is going to have a come have a chat with Chad Green now Well it looks like it will be a new hitter Ryan Valade came in defensively in this spot Brendan Donovan spot initially but they aren’t going to let Val pitch Instead they’ll go to Joel Poso the Venezuelan catcher and DH who’s on the Cardinals bench A guy with not a lot of big league experience This will be just his 42nd game but in 20 games this year he’s hit .298 with three doubles and a homer Well I think the thing that Pete Walker is saying to Chad Green or said to to Chad Green when he was out there hey pound the strike zone We’re up by four Even if this guy hits a home run off of you we’re still up by one run Pound the strike zone Get this guy to hit the ball into the ground [Music] Tying run is on deck 10-6 Blue Jays First and third one out The infield will play back Okay with conceding that run if it gets them an out or two First pitch check swing on a slider Appeal down to first He did go says Phil Kuzy Looked like he did Although no one points it quickly It’s nothing and one And now you can expand You have a young hitter up there A guy that doesn’t have a ton of power at least in the big leagues So you can expand on him a little bit Awan swing and a miss Threw the slider off the plate down and away Nothing and two That’s a good pitch I stay right there Just expand even more than that and throw that ball into the dirt You also have a guy pretty cold Did not play in the entire Dodgers series Last time that Poso hadn’t at bat was on June 5th 5 days ago Last hit for him came in May [Applause] 02 fouled back Poso doesn’t get a lot of playing time because the main function for him right now is that they’ll have a lot of days like today where they DH Herrera and Pedro Pah catches So if they didn’t have Poso they wouldn’t have a catcher on the bench Now they can do that and still have some security 02 again Slider rolled over foul [Music] Bozo a little time with the Texas Rangers in 2021 out of the minors or pardon me out of the majors only in the minors in between that season and now This is his 21st game of 2025 O2 again takes the slider outside that one a ball out of the hand One ball and two strikes Mason win on third base Ivon Herrera on first Joel Poso at the plate One-two slider popped up just back of the second baseman Jimenez who ranges onto the outfield grass to make the catch Big claps from Kirk right on contact Third two down Yeah how pumped is he You love to see a catcher as involved as Alejandra Kirk You see it a lot from Tyler Heinman is very animated back there but you don’t really see it that often from Alejandro Kirk pounding that bare right hand into his glove Love to see it We’ve seen it a couple times recently though We saw a big celebration a lot of emotion from Kirk on a walk-off hit It seems like maybe he’s getting to be a little more extroverted than he was before Here comes John Schneider to the mountain This is going to be a pitching change for the Blue Jays Second mountain visit by a coach so it has to be Chad Green looks out to center field He doesn’t look too happy as he’s taken out of this game with runners on the corners Two down and the Blue Jays leading 10 to6 Bottom of the ninth They will bring in the closer Jeff Hoffman for what will be an unconventional save situation This pitching change brought to you by Home Hardware the official home improvement retailer for the Toronto Blue Jays Locally owned genuinely Canadian as Hoffman strides in for one more time We think we’ll go over to our host today Sho Ali Thanks very much guys Let’s check out that St Louis Bar and Grill out of town scoreboard We were talking earlier about some NHL awards being handed out as we are getting close to the end of the season Montreal Canadians defenseman Lane Hudson winning the Calder Trophy today Elsewhere Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbury was announced as the Jack Adams winner which is awarded to the most outstanding head coach in a given year He was the runaway winner He earned 81 first place votes on 103 ballots cast The fourth Capitals head coach to win the award after Brian Murray Bruce Budro and Barry Trotz And he’s also the first individual to ever earn coach of the year honors in the NHL AHL and ECHL which is pretty cool And in Florida star forward Nikita Cucharov was named the winner of the Ted Lindseay Award pretended by the presented by the NHLPA to the quote unquote most outstanding player in the NHL as voted on by members of the NHLPA as opposed to the media which largely votes on many of the other awards It’s the second time CRO has won this award The first time coming in 2018-19 This season he led the NHL with 121 points in 78 games And of course he also won the Art Ross as the league leader in points Cutrov alongside both Edmonton’s Leon Dryidle and Winnipeg’s Connor Hella is a finalist for the heart trophy this year which will be handed out alongside the VZNA at the 2025 NHL awards this Thursday before game four of the cup final Blue Jays baseball as always is brought to you by Crown Rust Protection Back to the action here are Ben Schulman and Chris Laroo Thank you very much Joe Jeff Hoffman into the ball game Blue Jays up 106 but with runners on the corners the on deck batter is the tying run So this is a save situation for Hoffman who needs one out to finish this game Wilson Contras is on for the Cardinals again 10- six two outs two aboard in the first pitch is hit high deep center field racing back straw at the track It’s gone and it’s a one-run game Second time today that the Blue Jays have brought in a reliever and the first pitch has been hit out of the yard 10 to N on Wilson Contrus’s eighth long ball of the season And I feel like I’ve said this before with Jeff Hoffin on the mound I don’t mind that pitch there I like the fact that he was just trying to pound the strike zone Wilson Contraras ambushed him He was all over that fast ball But you have to remember that you still have the lead You have to make good pitches to this next batter All you need is one out Just make a couple of good pitches here and the Blue Jays will win the game Forget about that home run We were talking about this move Both of us kind of liked it Felt like the win today move And the first pitch to Berles is hooked on the ground to second Toss over to first and that will do it Well it got a little eventful but in two pitches Jeff Hoffman picks up the save and it’s a good day to be a Toronto Blue Jays They take the series winning the game today 10 to9 the final It was pretty obvious what he was trying to do against Wilson Contra Just trying to pound the strike zone You have a four-run lead Yes there’s two guys on base but there’s two outs in the inning He was just trying to get ahead with a fast ball Not a big deal Wilson Contras goes deep First pitch to the next batter Split finger Really good split finger down in the strike zone Easy ground ball to second base Game over And all is well then that ends well for the Blue Jays 10 to nine the final score at Bush Stadium in favor of the Blue Jays They’ve now won both of the first two series on this road trip over teams in and around the playoff picture We are going to take a quick step aside When we
