Cameron Reed Three players who might be in the Sharks range Reed may be kind of sneaking up here as we finish off our draft profiles Uh 30 guys we’ll have talked about since the start of the new year Um so um let’s get to it with our good friend Sam And now we bring in uh the beauty over at Scouching Sam McGilligan Uh keeping the whole thing together bringing up the taste the class that is uh Scouching Uh how’s it going buddy don’t give me too much praise for that one It’s more about it’s like a a rose among thorns here Uh when it comes to scouching scouting that is true Somebody’s got to be the beauty How are somebody has to be the beauty yes Uh yeah if you’re the boy bed you’re definitely Yeah you’re the you know uh Will is uh Will’s kind of the one who actually who has like the talent but maybe not the most pretty And then uh Tony’s just the old guy who’s like the way older than everybody else in the band just sitting in the back druming Yes 100% Uh so guys who are definitely not too old uh at least for this draft Uh we’re going to be looking at some interesting guys here And we’re going to be starting with one guy who is uh super intriguing because of the hype going to this season Didn’t really deliver but he’s still pretty talented Uh so we’re going to start with one uh Ivan Rykin forward playing with Moskegan this year at the USHL 6’2 pound left-handed shot 27 games in the USHL 19 goals 11 assists 95 shots on goal And I ask you Sam what makes Rykin an intriguing prospect as an intriguing player Riykin really thrives off of his stick handling and the fact that he can just use some pretty awesome skill to move defenders out of the way and create passing lanes in which he can then you know obviously pass into Um that’s kind of the end of the list Oh no Don’t get me wrong there are other things in isolation like he can he shoot yes he can shoot He can pull off some pretty cool like one-touch passes here and there that make you go like “Okay.” But for the most part he’s controversial kind of for a reason I kind of view it like skill is only one thing If you don’t have the pace of play to use that skill it’s always going to kind of be more problematic than being lesser skilled than a higher pace player And low pace kind of doesn’t do it justice to some extent Like he is no pace at times Glacier pace Yeah he’s controller disconnected style of pace at times That’s really concerning He doesn’t seem to I don’t like speaking in such harsh sounding tense um in such a harsh sense but it kind of feels like he doesn’t appreciate the details of the game that you know hockey is a game of the small details and all the big moments come from kind of mastering said small details right and you can look for plays to break the ice open but the conditions that allow you to make those crazy passes that you know go through three defenders is only you can only do that when that a whole other team has to respect you putting in the work in all the small areas as well Like that’s how they need to look at you and think there’s a lot of different things this guy can do When he has the puck they know he’s just going to try and do something crazy and then it’s just it sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t thing is is like we’re not scouting him to be a junior player We’re scouting him to be an NHL professional Yeah And that those players like they they don’t exist in the league They just don’t You need to be able to do everything It’s there’s some other I don’t want to go into rumors too much but the rumors are like behind the scenes right now He’s not doing well with the interview stage like at all He’s really not convincing teams that this was an anomaly and they’re more so looking at him like “Oh no this is a consistent pattern that’s going to follow this kid.” Like every I I don’t know the full story about what happened in Russia We’ve heard different like accounts So again like we won’t go too deep into the rumors with it but like uh again they were teams were annoyed with him Teams didn’t like dealing with them and teams didn’t think he took it seriously enough He’s had a pretty substantial weight issue which is a rare thing to talk about in a player but he is 200 plus pounds at 5’11 I don’t know how accurate that is I know combine measurements came in this I’m not using a combine measurement so maybe it’s different Um but yeah like it’s just like red flag red flag red flag But I will go back to something that does work in his favor because you can still see him finding a role in with one specific job Not just being the skilled guy the fact that he can be and I mean this in a good way kind of a nasty rat Like he can do some stuff that makes you go “Yeah oh boy that was dirty.” But like you could see if he worked with the coach the coach believed with him how they could like mold a play style that kind of straddles that line a little bit But it again it requires a bit more buy in and buyin requires more pace And again like if this all kind of works out and the skill and the pace and everything kind of come together with the feistiness we’ll call it feistiness instead of rattiness It sounds better um then you can kind of start to see a player who can fill into a bottom six role But I still see one that would probably jump teams a lot And when we’re talking about using this would be the 30th pick for San Jose Yeah Yep 30th pick or 33 Yeah This is a pretty bold take of that pick because I don’t think there’s a really a scenario where you get that top six upside Like I know it’s like the profile of like Boomer Bust but the B the boom in this point is still someone who’s like lower in your lineup Unique skills like a power play two guy kind of thing Okay So I mean this sounds he sounds like a coach’s nightmare to be honest right because it’s probably one of these guys where he’s super frustrating where again he he shows that he has a lot of flash and stuff but there’s just no substance to his game Is that probably the best way to put it where all substance kind of Yeah And you can go a long time without seeing the flashes and you mostly just see the feistiness which you know take do with that information as you will Um when and you when you say feistiness are you talking about like because I mean you you see especially like watching we’re you know literally watching the Florida Panthers right now who have that feistiness and space or is this feistiness of like not a team player or what do you like feistiness in the sense where like if you need someone to throw an elbow at somebody you’ve got a guy who was willing I got a guy uh And like again like I don’t want to speak in such a negative sense about him It’s not like he’s going out there with intent to injure I wouldn’t call him like a deliberately dirty player but like part of the game that he’s not shy of getting his hands dirty whatsoever Gotcha Okay At some point though right somebody is going to just be like the the flashes are too good right because uh this this feels like a player who probably is going to fall draft day and especially at the draft uh interviews from the combine have not gone well Um but even like coming into the the draft period like he was thought to be a very uberly talented player who could potentially be a you know upper first round pick and we’ve seen the slide and he might slide on draft day At what point are you just like screw it the the the flashes in the upside are too high are you just like “No there’s too many red flags.” I’m not usually one to fully write somebody off as a DND because at some point it’s possible that they’re the most valuable person in the draft I think this draft has a quite a few interesting European players who are being undervalued as is and they’re going to be the type to slip through So I think if you’re really trying to like maximize efficiency as like one let’s just say like one specific team like you had San Jose and this was their goal I think you would be able to go a lot of picks before taking him But at some point you probably do I imagine like fifth sixth seventh maybe fourth I use a second if you he would need to be like my fifth pick for me to be okay with it at the draft just because like that’d be the Sharks third round pick right there as our fifth pick Yeah Yeah Uh I could see that It’s just I also think in the third round there’s just going to be a better like there’s it’s a weird year right it’s a weird year where like there’s quite a few names who are mentioned in the first and second round discussion where I’m like you just don’t feel like you’re bringing enough to the table But there are the as always every year there’s that group of Europeans who got underappreciated Just take more swings on them I feel like is usually the strategy I would go for especially with the Swedish class this year There’s quite a few underrated Swedish players or at least players playing in that league Mhm But yeah with Reapkin third fourth round but it all depends on what your staff personally think of him because if your staff all wrote him off that you drafting him in the third round’s gonna really upset everybody it does not feel like a Mike Greer type of player Just I don’t think he is I no I’m curious who drafts him because most of the teams that can appreciate the uh feistiness and the willingness to get his hands dirty are the teams that also appreciate the high pace just go smash players kind of guys and he’s not that It’s not like he’s some crazy big hitter He’s just willing to do some questionable things Yeah All right Before we talk about William Moore Toolsy Center definitely feels like a Mike Greer type of guy Just need to take a quick break Looking for a snack that’s both delicious and nutritious crack into a good source of protein with a wonderful pistachios Wonderful pistachio is one of the highest protein nuts Each 1 oz serving has six grams of protein giving you 10% of your daily value Plus they’re packed with fiber and better for you unsaturated fats to help keep you feeling fuller longer Personally I like the inshell variety I like hearing the little crack It’s like a snack meditation But if you like the noshell ones not going to shell shame you They have plenty of great flavors to choose from I like to just throw a bag um in my desk at work right around 2:30 Get that snacky feeling Uh wonderful pistachios will definitely hold you over until dinner time Uh so get snacking and get cracking with the snack that packs a protein punch Visit wonderfulpistachio.com to learn more All right let’s switch over to a guy who probably has a a easier path and probably is going to be a cleaner prospect here Uh and William Moore So William Moore forward playing with the US national team 6’2 174 pounds probably going to put some weight on there Uh left-handed shot uh is committed to go play at BC So Boston area kid uh Mike Greer red flag circle highlight whatever you want to do there Uh 64 games with the national team 27 goals 32 assists 124 shots on goal Uh we know this the national team this year not what we’ve seen in in previous years but what makes more an intriguing player especially maybe in this range of end of the first beginning of the second yeah So now we’re starting to enter like I’m a lot more interested in Will Moore than I am in Ivan Reapkin So with Wilmore you do have a player who has a lot of smarts That’s like if I had to come up with the defining trait it would be the smarts the all-encompassing hockey IQ term that gets thrown around He’s really good at the small little connecting plays like the give and goes and just recognize like buying time with the puck and just getting it to the open guy in transition But he does have a you know the surprising amount of skill to his game which isn’t actually that surprising because Moore was a somewhat anticipated prospect coming into the draft He I think he fell under the bar that was set for him initially but he still kind of turned it around with pretty solid end at the end of the U8s I caught a little bit of it I hadn’t seen much So I don’t know the extent of it but from what I heard he played even better than what I saw So maybe there’s even more proof that he’s got the skill and the brains kind of all coming together Either way though as you said he’s 6’2 and 174 pounds so there’s frame to work with And he already kind of plays a solid sturdy game where he can drive in and out both to the outside and on the inside He can use his reach to protect the puck He can he won’t take on like unnecessary risk which is always a great thing Um he straddles this weird line almost between like the connective detailed play connecting passing kind of just like generic archetype versus like somebody who can take the puck and carry it and like create something for himself and like open up the ice for his linemates and let something really develop from the space that he’s creating The problem is kind of that I think he lacks the foot speed to do this at a high-end level which then goes to the age-old question like what is your role in the NHL it kind of goes back to well you’re probably going to be the connecting third line center fourth line center uses your frame has a solid shot has some good skill like enough out there and plays the game smartly enough where you can look at him and be like “Okay there’s a tangible package that projects and can play a role and you can see it and there’s a little bit of upside there and if the skating comes along then who knows what else that kind of unlocks.” I know puck preps were extremely high amid when he was at a major junior draft age for the OHL to the point where they ranked him first I believe in the OHL draft for the year that he came in and I saw clips of him that year and he was really really good One of those like you could see that the brain was way beyond his peers and that he could just make reads on the ice that other players weren’t His positioning was always great He’s two-way pivot as well so you’re not just getting like offensive play here You are getting someone who can chip in in the defensive zone who can use a stick and you use his stick use his body box players out kind of catch pucks and sometimes find that quick feed out that really jump starts the attack and tries to get the numbers going for his team Four on threes threeon twos that type of stuff All things considered though like you kind of just have as uh Scouch calls them the meat and potatoes players and he’s kind of the meat and potatoes players But this is again like of the good side And the thing again and I hate to be that guy who could bring it up but this is not the most impressive draft in terms of like high-end talent There are lots of smart players There are lots of guys who are good at individual roles You’ll probably find a fair chunk of NHL players from that but you’re not going to find a whole lot of incredible ones If Moore has the tools that you’re looking for and you need to add more centers to your lineup and you want to add some with some size and some upside weight can be put on speed could improve be a little bit more interested in seeing like lateral agility improve I think that would open up a bit more but either or would be great or both um your guy Yeah he is an interesting guy for San Jose at this pick I mean especially if you look at right you have Mlinra who I think fair to say will on his way to being a one se Uh I think he’s doing okay in that regard Yeah Yeah Uh the assumption is they’re going to draft Michael Misa at number two So then you have Misa or Will Smith Both they do Right So you have Misa or Will Smith as your second line center and whichever one isn’t you’re going to kick him out to wing Uh so have and especially if if Smith ends up being your second line center Smith maybe not like he’s going to be very offensive oriented So having a guy like Moore who can be a toolsy third line center kind of help fill in some of the gaps or even if Misa is your second line center and just having Moore who’s going to be just a a on a ridiculous third line center Not the worst path for the Sharks And yes we are projecting far far ahead But um I think for the Sharks and you see Greer like the players that he wants to acquire He wants big forwards Uh you know even look at this Barracuda team that in the playoffs they were most the guys were 6’2 63 6’4 Um yes Moore is going to put on some weight but he does kind of feel like a Mike Greer type of player what he’s looking for um in the draft And I think so too Yeah I think Moore could be one of those guys that uh you know definitely on his short list at 30 or 33 if he wants to go forward um in there So um you mentioned some of the stuff you you know like foot speed etc etc at Boston College What do you kind of want him to work on the most like kind of the area of play you want to work on him the most though uh general pace of play and how that gets achieved is kind of up in the air but it’s more so like making sure that when he goes there the elements that work in his game right now the one concern when you see them again it’s low pace but the NTDP as a whole their pace was a bit lower than recent years especially since they lost their top end guy to college coming into the year so like the talent discrepancy through the lineup is a little bit more everyone kind of got shifted maybe up a spot that they should have Yeah it was already looking like a bit of a more mild class So it I think the big thing with Moore is getting that pace of play up Does this come through foot speed does this come through faster processing does this come through being a little bit more willing to just like drive up and down the ice and let his faster footed you know bit more highpaced teammates get into spots a bit quicker like does is he making the reads like that and just keeping up because if he is then you get to be quite flexible and see how San Jose wants to work with them I imagine no matter what they’re going to say hit the wait room Yeah Like no matter what they’re saying regardless it’s called Yes Uh here’s here’s a card get you unlimited meals at the dining hall and then when you’re done with that uh go hit the wait room Exactly like they they’re going to want them to put on the size and bulk up and they’re also going to it it depends I don’t really know Each team kind of has their own approach to skating improvements and who even really knows what’s going to happen with that There’s the age-old homage that it’s the easiest thing to improve postdraft which in some cases has proven to be quite true and in others not so much So I don’t think there’s anything fundamentally broken with his stride and I’m not usually one to lean too much into biomechanics anyways So I’m pretty optimistic and that there’s some good stuff coming from him And I think he is one of the guys that came in with a bit of pedigree that maybe didn’t live up to expectations but has shown enough where you can look at him and be like you might have a big comeback year So maybe it’s not even so much what he needs to work on Maybe it’s a new environment Maybe it’s just playing with a bit faster paced teammates is all it takes to just bring that extra bit out And then as his foot speed as his strength increases as he’s able to protect the puck along the boards as he’s able to just shove off that pressure have just maintain that extra bit of control You start to see those details all kind of connect a lot more And he’s always going to be like a quick good give and go type of player like off puck supporting type of guy He’s that’s just going to be his game He might struggle a little bit when he moves up just naturally because it’s NCAA from USL and that’s gonna have a jump Cool All right before we finish up uh we talk about Cameron Reed a smooth skating defenseman who has been climbing the rankings here Just need to take a quick break All right let’s switch over to a blue line guy who’s been kind of starting to climb up the rankings especially with the uh coming out of the combine here A guy who you actually uh mocked to Sharks Uh guy who fell uh which says uh how wrong you and Scout constantly are It’s amazing But always wrong Always wrong Never good Never good So uh we’re going to be talking about Cameron Reed defenseman playing with Kitchener uh 6 foot 174 pounds Left-handed Sharks fans please uh don’t roll your eyes Save your like again the Sharks can just continue to draft more defenseman because they need more defenseman But in 67 games uh 14 goals 40 assists 140 shots on goal What makes Cameron Reed an intriguing prospect despite his left-handedness his left-handedness no it’s just the it’s the smoothness So you can compare him to the last two players or Rapka and more Granted positional differences aside like he is a lot more of a fluid smooth player Like he’s smooth with the puck when he’s skating He’s smooth when he’s skating without the puck He is smooth when he’s looking up and making quick passes with the puck He is just generally a fluid player He looks like the type of guy who skate who should play professional one day whether that’s NHL or AHL you know Europe who knows but like he looks like a guy who’s going to be playing professional hockey one day He’s six foot He I honestly thought he was a bit bigger I didn’t really I guess I just kind of missed this for the first bit of the year but like I thought he was a bit bigger and I was that was based on like the way he played play Yeah But this ended up kind of be it’s funny because this ended up kind of not being a true depiction of how he played and it’s how you can get sample size sometimes because for the most part I’d actually say Reed is a little I’m not going to say disengaged but you would want to see more engagement out of him in the defensive zone Mostly just physical in applying like pressureing space and zoning players out a bit more because he has good footwork and he is a good skater So you want to see this be leveraged into a tool Instead he’s very comfortable with the poke check with the stick which is fine because he’s good with the stick Like there’s no like criticism about how he uses it It’s more so just like a less complete version of what he could be in the defensive zone if he used his feet a little bit more But I this could also just be a coaching thing like the right coach working with him for a little bit Just be like just pressure this guy It’s fine I’m not going to yell at you just prep play a couple Yeah play sometime in the a couple of months in the AHL when you have to be a little bit more physical Like you’ll probably figure it out a little bit I don’t see him as someone who shies from physicality either It’s just a different style of defense It’s what works for him right now Um he’s an interesting player because I find when he’s in the defensive zone he’s pretty stable Like he’s not trying to be that madman who runs up the ice a little too early and kind of blows coverage and really gets them hemmed in the zone But when the puck is moved past the red line and especially with in the offensive zone Reed is aggressive He does like to move up He wants to be involved in the play He likes finding numbers advantages He likes looking for passes as one of the lead attackers when he’s there He doesn’t overly force it He likes to pinch off the blue line to keep pucks in play He is not afraid to play with the puck at all which is awesome That’s cool I don’t know if he has the high-end skill to make that work but that’s not necessarily going to be a problem I think because if you’re going to be playing in the NHL capacity you still need to be able to play with the puck So I think it works itself out Um the passing that always looks the best with him are like kind of in motion pass receptions when they’re going DD on a reset and kind of things are going back He’ll get the pass from his teammate He catches it cleanly He’s moving heads up and then it’s just like a boom quick pass Short range some like not long range but I guess medium would be the middle of short and long is medium Um the short medium range passes like those are fine Um he typically doesn’t miss them He doesn’t force them and take on like unnecessary risk which is awesome Uh at the same time like some if you’re looking for like those high octane offensive guys they typically are finding those passing lanes and seen and they are willing to carry the puck and like kind of bait that pressure and then maneuver around it Reed’s game is okay when he does things like this Um it’s not overwhelming It’s not like giving OHL players fits like “Oh man it’s Cameron Reed What am I going to do?” But like he is going to give you a problem if you underestimate him How does that project to the NHL be curious to kind of see I don’t really think it’s just going to be a part of his game he leads into too much I think he’s just going to be that smooth fluid guy who just gets the puck on his stick and moves it out kind of quick and hopefully engages a bit more defensively I think in the NHL he’ll cut back with the pinching in the offensive zone for the most part just because do it a few too many times and your coach will kill you Yes Um but we still haven’t seen Ryan Mkeley after he pitched once One too many times We haven’t Exactly He got banished to the KHL But yeah we got it Yeah this is a bit a bit much but that’s kind of why because like you need to be able to earn that and one of the easiest ways you get to earn being an offensive zone pincher is by making sure your coach isn’t going to be mad at you when the puck goes the other way on a mistake So are you able to track the play back are you able to cut off the men at the right time will you put in every bit of your heart and soul to get back in time when you’re back are you going to be able to pressure effectively secure the puck play off the guy who is pressuring successfully securing the puck will you get open will you get the puck out all those things Reed can check off actually quite a few of those boxes So that’s good Like he actually might basically I’m going with this He’s gonna get a little bit of a longer leash than a Ryan Mkeley would because Mkeley didn’t check off a lot of those boxes So all he would do is piss off his coach kind of understandably so In the NHL you don’t get to like it’s not worth the pinchup if you’re not going to secure the zone afterwards right all right Uh so Reed where do you feel like he kind of settles in um on an NHL team probably like a second pairing defenseman who’s going to kind of kickstart your transitions and play solid in his own zone Is that kind of the role you do i see like a number four Yeah If in the best scenario but I realistically I think I see more of a number five six Okay There’s not a crazy amount of high-end projections this year It’s again it’s like those role players who know their role and play it well but those are like good And if the goal I think like fans will do a lot better with managing expectations this draft if they really believe like you’re just getting a role player You’re getting a role player I’m usually not what I’m usually like oh it’s the first round Like I’m taking a swing Like I’m not wasting this on a guy that I can find for less than a first round pick in a few years Like I want to make this pick work There ain’t too many swings this year JD what are we doing this is the kind of year where it’s like if I’m looking at this pick at 30 and I look at the board it’s like you either take someone who you feel like NHL player or take the NHL players especially because they’re going to go quick and there’s a number of them that are kind of sure things or at least like should be things things that you can reasonably place a bet into But like they’re probably going to go pretty quick Like if there are 20 to 25 clear ones they’re probably almost all gone by 45 Makes sense All right Uh Sam you’ve done it all Uh you you ended ended my draft profiles Uh thank you so much buddy Where can the people find you i know you are uh you’re kind of more behind the scenes now but uh you’re definitely on scouting all the time So where can the people find you buddy yeah Well I’ll be back on scouting uh for the draft this year and probably dis uh appearing on the show one time before the draft itself starts Um I’m in between social medias this year because Twitter sucks but I haven’t committed to the Blue Sky game yet enough So follow me on both because I don’t know which one I’m going to use yet He’s undecided Uh I hope you do like the commitment thing you know like uh NFL or like college guys who are like high school players gonna announce what college they go to They have all the hats and stuff You need like the Twitter hat You need the blue sky hat You got to pick it out I got to really figure it out Really figure it out and commit Yes I’m going to do a short and I mean it for the first time ever truly short uh rankings write up uh week of the draft and that’ll be coming out as always on my Substack which is just silly And yeah beyond that you can look forward to me for or you can look forward to seeing me on a couple scouting things before the draft and then it’s coming back for 2026 and I’ll be seeing you then You’re excited about the 2026 draft AR I am I am excited for it Especially because I took quite a bit of time off this year and kind of you get to be refreshed and Yeah exactly The mental reset This was the draft to do the reset Yes it really was I ain’t going to lie on you on that I there’s some guys in this draft that I love but this was the this was the year have fun with Scout Enjoy the rest of your summer I’m sure we’ll talk again soon buddy Yes sir You too All right I do want to thank Sam for uh hanging out here getting to know some of these players Uh Rykin definitely does not feel like a uh guy who could be a San Jose Shark Uh just the talents there But we know Mike Greer like he likes that players who have that dog in him I don’t know if Ravikin’s that guy Uh Moore definitely could be be a guy um to look at and Cameron Reed if the Sharks maybe move up or if he falls I think he could be another potential uh guy for for San Jose here So um that’s going to conclude our draft profile So we’ll still have plenty more draft stuff Uh we’re going to do of course uh Michael Misa deep dive before the draft We’ll get you guys ready uh the week of the draft But um yeah that’s that’s 30 30 draft profiles we’ve done So um thank you guys so of course for making Lockdown Sharks your first listen Um if you haven’t yet make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast And of course you can watch on YouTube as well Follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at Lockdown Sharks Follow me on Twitter and Blue Skyfry Hole Until tomorrow Bye 1. McGilligan is probably right that there are bound to be a bunch of under-ranked Europeans. The top-50 is so heavily skewed to North Americans that it’s almost implausible.

Most European 18 year olds play in a lesser junior league that no one takes seriously or in a men’s league with no ice time and produce nothing, or both. Scouting these players is a lot of work.

Ryabkin looks like a disaster though. He was in the top-10 going into the season because he looked to be this year’s Michkov of Demidov. Beware the guy that just fits the shirt.
