Shemar Stewart LEAVES Bengals Facilities: Why Contract Talks Stalled | Minicamp Recap
jamar Stewart left mini camp early and much much more following a busy three days at Payor Stadium Right now on Cincinnati Bengals Talk [Music] Hi again everyone and welcome in to CBT I’m James of Benglesalk.com Hit that subscribe button ring the bell and make sure you check us out wherever you get your podcast That’s Amazon that is Spotify that is obviously Apple podcast as well And let’s dive into the news of camp Certainly the news of the day Shamar Stewart left camp and left on Wednesday a day early after practice And that was pretty noteworthy for a bunch of reasons One obviously his contract situation is what it is The back and forth with the Bengals We heard from him earlier this week He is not happy with what uh the Bengals are offering him I’ll get more on that and share more on that in just a minute here uh as far as the the contractual side of it But Zach Taylor talked right here today shared some thoughts uh on on Shamar We posted them not a ton supporting Shamar but also could only say so much because obviously the front office is negotiating The front office is trying to essentially put in a clause that they haven’t put in in the past that a lot of teams use And that’s been a question that a lot of people have asked And so basically what this clause is is in in in every team does this but it’s the when I I talked to multiple agents about this and no not Shamar’s agent to get an idea of what was going on And and so basically what it is is this clause Let’s say Shamar got suspended for one game because he took off his helmet and threw it into the stands or something right get suspended for one game or there’s a peed suspension or anything like that Well all of his guaranteed money on his rookie deal could void Doesn’t mean he’s cut It doesn’t mean he doesn’t get paid but that guaranteed money voids So Jameson Williams is a good example He was suspended a few years ago first round pick Well his guaranteed money voided for the Lions That doesn’t mean he didn’t see the length of that contract He is They’re in extension talks By the time you see this they may sign him to an extension So that’s step one The Bengals haven’t done this in the past where all of that money all of that guaranteed money would void in that scenario They’re trying to do it They’re trying to set that precedent Fine So Shamar saying “I don’t want to be the first guy to do it You didn’t make Amarius do it I don’t want to do it.” Fine But the difference is when the Eagles do it or some of these other teams do it is they sweeten the deal a little bit for for the player And what the Bengals could do is let’s say and and all the money is guaranteed for rookies uh or for first round picks They could go to Shamar and say instead of giving you 50% of your signing bonus at the time of signing let’s give you 75% of your signing bonus at the time of signing And yeah that’s going to be paid regardless but gets it to him faster and says “Hey we get it we understand that you you’re you’re doing this for us so we’ll do this for you or we’ll give you all of your signing bonus up front right away That would be a way to kind of bridge the gap make it sweet for for Shamar on the the same side set your president pre president that you want to set that I do think is fair The reason that it’s so frustrating though is because this is a a whole distraction and I know it’s a distraction and I just got out of the Bengals locker room and guys are talking about it Guys like man what is going on now I will say uh there are also guys in the locker room that didn’t realize that Shamar left because he hasn’t participated And you know you can guess who would and who wouldn’t depending on meeting rooms and things like that But he he left after Wednesday’s session according to Shaft I get it I I I get the frustration and by by I get it I get your frustration because I think this is going to be a topic I think this could certainly go into training camp and that’s why I mentioned that sweetener that all right get the money to him faster on the signing bonus to maybe get this thing done and getting this done before training camp starts has to be high on the priority list other training or other mini camp notes not training camp yet we got some weeks before uh other mini camp notes Joe Burrow I talked to multiple veterans just raving about Joe Burrow’s ball placement about the throws he’s making and attempting and I thought that was interesting that in the past Joe hasn’t necessarily attempted as many uh of these thread the needle throws this time of the year It’s more of a a training camp thing Well he did that throughout mini camp And so I thought that that was really interesting I thought that um just watching him is awesome Goes without saying talk to a veteran who’s really bullish on Dylan Fairchild And I think that that’s obviously someone that a lot of people are following a lot of people are thinking about and they’re going to likely start him at left guard And so for for guys that have worked with him to say “Yeah man he’s he’s working out He’s getting a lot of valuable reps One thing that the Bengals are doing is a lot of one-on- ons offensive line versus defensive line.” And that’s that’s different That’s new this year Jerry Montgomery and Scott Peters implemented that I think you will enjoy that uh from a a knowledge standpoint and I’m also excited for training camp because that means more one-on- ones and what’s better than one-on- ones and in this offense you have to one-on-one block Defensively we already talked about Shamaratan talked about Trey I I I think that that’s going to be the elephant in the room that’s going to hang over everything Daxel progressing well That that’s another one that I think you look at Dax you look at what he’s he can be and you look at how Al Golden’s moved these defensive backs all around Cam Taylor Brit nickel Cam Taylor Brit playing safety a little bit and no he’s not going to move to safety but can align in a bunch of different spots and I think that’s what they’re doing is they’re experimenting to see what this secondary can do So overall I I I like that I think Al Golden is certainly buttoned up We posted the video yesterday carries himself like a head coach Obviously he’s been a head coach at the collegiate level I I like a lot about what he’s doing from a technique standpoint as well I talked about the one-on-one blocking offensive line defensive line uh or the one-on-one matchups On defense a big stressor has just been tackling Shocker Something the Bengals really struggled with last year tackling And so if you can clean that up I think that would go a long way Overall I think it was a successful mini camp for those that were here that were present and participating But the drama continues We’re going to have plenty on all things Bengals I talked with Andre Yosvage oneonone That interview will come soon some point next week And uh we have a lot coming your way So yeah mini camp in the books Plenty of Bengals coverage coming your way Make sure you hit that subscribe button hit follow wherever you get your podcasts And until next time for Andrew Fox Miller I’m James Rupine signing off as mini camp is in the books right here on Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart left minicamp early. The rookie remains unsigned. James Rapien reacted to the news, explained what’s going on with Stewart and the team, plus he recapped minicamp with thoughts on Joe Burrow, the offensive line and more!

Shouldn't have drafted a guy in the first place that never produced
Thank you for being a reporter and getting facts out not just rumors. Good job.
So you're finally admitting other teams have been using this clause that Stewart is upset about. That's a horse of a different color!
Great way to help make us start 1-3 owners thanks
I hate this for Shemar. His agent is trying to light his rookie year on fire. No one in the football union is going to talk outside of the Players Association. They are going to back a player. The bad thing for Shemar is he in not a polished TE. He is a raw talent who got pressure by power moves. He needs a lot more than that to succeed in the NFL. So everyone is rooting for him to stand on his principles as it stunts his rookie season. I don't blame Shemar he is just in his early 20s. I blame the agent who is trying to make a name for himself by have another player act out. Zachary Hiller has 5 nfl players. James Cook the most notible.
You're doing it ALL WRONG KATIE!!!
I’ve been a Bengal fan since the beginning. This is pathetic. This is a total clown show with the Cincinnati Bengals. No wonder media and NFL fans laugh at us. No wonder players don’t want to come here to play. And it will never change. I feel so badly for this young man. He’s stuck in a clown show with the bangles.
Dude better put up 40 sacks in the next 4 years after all this nonsense.
I'm so sick of the way the Bengals conduct business. It's like they have NO IDEA how to conduct business. They always seem to end up holding the dummy end of the stick. I wish they'd just make a smart decision here… they're gonna fuck around… and Shemar is gonna sit the season out… and reenter the 2026 NFL Draft. Which means the Bengals… basically forfeited their 1st rd pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Just get the contract signed you morons.
Shemar Stewart will have a boulder on his shoulder when he is signed to the team.Sports analyst will have egg on their faces.Shemar will develop into a mad beast and outperform his contract and will probably share his talent with another team. Really, the organization is severely dysfunctional. 😡
Should’ve drafted Greg Zabel. I doubt he would be holding out this long. Shemar sure has a huge ego on him for someone who barely got any sacks in college
I’m glad burrow and the offense is looking good. None of it is going to matter with how horrible this defense is going to be
I don't see the big deal …we still have Joe, Tee, and Chase…well be fine. They should just let him sit on the sideline this yr. Who Dey!!
Imma just say i was hyped to have someone else in the d line room, but now nahhhh the players arent playing for the same things anymore, they no longer have faith in the organisation the same way. At the end of the day it is a businesa but still
After that explanation by James, what I took out of it was Shemar expects to get suspended during these next 4 years and doesn't want to own the consequences of his actions. Allegedly.
Why even show up to the facility, when the front office is trying to screw you out of your money. It only hurts the Bengals not having your 1st round pick on the team.
Is this Katie? Mike?? Why are they starting the clause now? They seem to always struggle with the slow starts and contract distractions
Feels like another annual 0-2 start incoming, the Taylor slow start classic
I'm totally disgusted w/ the FO. I was excited for the season but at this point I'm convinced they aren't trying to win a championship, just sell tickets. I won't be going to games anymore until the front office changes or the team is sold
Whether or not the clause is used around the league, this wasn’t the time to get into another contract dispute. Bengals management needed to read the room. Not to mention… doesn’t having both Trey and Shemare holding out hurt their leverage to get either signed? Idk the particulars of Burrows deal, but how bout they move things around so Joe’s getting paid his full freight a year or two after he retires. Backload his guaranteed $ then renegotiate the deal before that season arrives. Who cares if we’re paying him one day way down the road after he’s gone. Whenever he’s gone will be a rebuilding year anyways.
Mini Camp was great except for all the James Rapien questions about contracts 😂
The Bengals are the laughing stock of the NFL.
Pay Trey !!! Trade “SS” to the Saints or Panthers
Bengals are a mess.
If that's what the standoff is about, then it's not that big of a deal for the FO and ownership! It's a bigger deal for Shemar! They need to be a little more reasonable and give a little ground! It is ultimately in their best interest as well as the best interest of the team and the fans! We need Shemar and we need him now! He needs to get those reps asap! The regular season is quickly approaching! This is an extremely bad time to attempt to set a precedent! Let it go and choose a future time to set a precedent when, hopefully, our situation won't be so delicate, in terms of getting back to the playoffs! We cannot go 3 years in a row without making it to the playoffs with an offense that is this good!! We need all-hands-on-deck when it comes to the defense!!!! Our defense can't keep holding us back!
It’s disgusting how you treat your own players. You drafted Shemar Stewart—so pay the man. If you’re not confident in your pick, don’t draft him. This mess shows you don’t believe in him. You expect him to perform with all this hanging over him? He’s not a pawn—he’s a person. Stop treating players like walking mats.
Good luck in free agency next year, Duke. I'm sure the Bengals first draft pick next year is going to be thrilled as well.
Another sucky situation we find ourselves in.
