Oilers INSANE Comeback vs Panthers Explained

game four between the Oilers and Panthers was absolutely insane and the outcome of this game changes the entire dynamic of the series after getting embarrassed in game three the Oilers just completed one of the wildest comebacks to take game four and send this back to Edmonton all tied up from a potential 3-1 series lead to a 2-2 series this cup final has been absurd so far so what the hell happened let’s break it all down but before we do so from the start there’s lots of eyes on this game taylor Swift and Travis Kels are in the building nfl fans are rolling their eyes and right away in warm-ups the mind games start florida’s backup VTEC Vanichek tries to get in the kitchen of Steuart Skinner he’s probably telling him his breath stinks asking him if he left the fridge open you know anything to get him off of his game but right out of the gate that doesn’t look like it’s going to be the case at all 2 minutes in Florida’s got a shooting gallery out and first save stop rebound for Bennett the menace but Skinner slides over to make the save florida’s humming early and then Edmonton gets into penalty trouble again evander Kane is on a speedrun for taking highsticking penalties in this series in the box pal you couldn’t do that last game you can’t do it this game darnell Nurse comes in and joins him so pucker up Oilers fans it’s a five on three for a penalty kill that has just not been good right off the draw two twoman advantage kachchuck with enough time and space to pitch a tenth and stay the weekend he goes low blocker on Skinner and not much you can do there if you’re the goalie the Oilers fail again to score the first goal of the game which is a nightmare against a team like the Panthers who can just shut you down as soon as they get the lead penalty troubles get worse too as Echome high sticks the rat right in the schnoz and Chris Knoblock is probably losing it we’ve talked about it in games one and three about the weaknesses of the Oilers PK from a tactical point of view but one word to describe it right now is just flatout disconnected any PK formation whether it’s a diamond box or triangle plus one like Edmonton plays only works if there’s cohesion in its execution lately the Panthers have just been picking apart the scene between the triangle and the plus one by using the bumper and they do it again on goal number two the motion from Eblad off the blue line to the far post is going to prompt Kaan at the top of the triangle to shift down low and take away the cross ice pass that means the bumper is left wide open the motion of Florida causes a stir rebounds for chaos and Kachchuck again the garbage man picking up the trash for his second goal and this one may be over before it even started edmonton is just trying to go into period 2 to reset but Florida doesn’t let them breathe the Panthers chip it in and Verhagi is on defenseman Troy Ster quick and Stcher just got back in the lineup to replace John Clingberg the reverse play here is the right play with nurse as support but the swing and a mysterike one he fans on it completely and now it’s panic at the disco verhagi right out in front to Anton and Uncle Lindell and they score 3 nothing and that is a backb breakaker at the end of the period and everyone at this point is just saying it’s as good as over the Panthers look like an unbeatable machine pure Terminator mode these guys are insane and at the start of the second the Oilers replace Steuart Skinner with Calvin Pickard to change up the mojo and it looks like it starts to work as Edmonton gets their turn to cook on the power play they get into their fiveman spread and some puck moving up top gets these two killers in the diamond to flex out enough to create a gap as this swings low to dry cycle it’s very similar to what we saw in Florida’s power play two killers converge to take away the down low and a cross pass to Perry that spring chicken on the doorstep but instead of finding someone in the bumper Dry Cidle finds the seam that was created from the puck moving up top to Nan Hopkins and oh my goodness top bunker in and out shaves the ear hair off of Babski it’s 3-1 and Edmonton has some life but they need to get going five on five so they bring the movement the Panthers when the puck is moved up high towards the blue line get in this manon-man coverage so like I said in our cup final preview motion and scissors can cause ruckus for Florida when they try to quickly sort out assignments here florida’s fourth line is forced to defend as this puck moves high and this is how one tiny mistake or even just a slow step can create a snowball effect everyone on Florida initially locks onto a man but because Greer is just a tad late to get into that lane Gajovic decides to fill that spot and block a potential shot it’s not the wrong play but it is a reactionary play as Echome does a great job of selling that shot and orchestrating that whole thing but at the same time Nurse activates off the blue line echome goes to Nurse and now he’s got room because Gajivic stayed in the shot lane nurse with that little bit of room and oof Bob’s going to have no more ear hair after this series upstairs again Jeff Skinner or Pats Kulakov after to say nice minus pal and Edmonton has planted the seed of doubt then McDavid almost scores one of the most sickening goals we would have ever seen he goes under the stick the D slips on a banana peel but Babski says not today the Oilers though they keep it coming off a faceoff win nurse again activates off the blue line he keeps it simple by getting it to the net on the bend and it’s Pod Coulson pod Goolen the goal is in the net the Oilers come all the way back to tie the game at the end of the second after coming into this one down by three this series is wild and buckle up cuz we ain’t done in this game the Oilers forche did their job and the depth comes through watch here as the Panthers love to have tight support in their own end on the breakout but the F2 forces the bump pass to Bararkov to be in his feet and the F3 for Edmonton and Henrique is all over that he comes in like a missile forces Barov to bobble the puck turnover happening on Main Street but Walman is on Broadway tickling the rafters saying “Give me the puck.” He gets it and blasts one through Bob the Oilers have taken a 43 lead the swings in this game are topnotch but grab a Red Bull because Florida pulls the tendee and here’s how important playing the puck can be on the forche as a goalie pickard comes out to play it whiffs on advance in the rim and it just buys enough time for Florida to set all their traps on the wall turnover bad to worse quickly Bennett with a lovely dish reinhardt sends it to Kachchuck full-on fire drill pickard is lost at C and Samson Reinhardt ties the game of course 19.5 seconds left what a game we’re going OT baby of course as well ot is hard attack city close calls both ways both teams hit the post calvin Pickard huge stops in overtime but then the Oilers get the look they want on a stretch pass they go north and across quickly with a one-touch dish from Pog Cryle dips the shoulder one-handed shovel pass it goes off of Mikola and between the legs of Babroski oh no leon Dryidle the German doctor is this games luck boy Illinois lucky to be good good to be lucky who cares if you’re Edmonton they complete a wild comeback and tie this series at two now postgame thoughts heading into game five first was Calvin Pickard this guy came in cold turkey and cheese sandwich at the start of the second and was lights out for Edmonton his style is similar to my drunk uncle playing road hockey but he competes incredibly hard and has been consistently clutch in these playoffs as he’s a perfect 7-0 skinner I didn’t think was all that bad in period 1 he made some huge saves but they had to switch up the vibe now the question becomes who do you start in game five skinner didn’t play bad but Picker just came in and stole the show i think they probably go with Pickard but as an organization Skinner’s their guy so who knows tactically the Oilers did a much cleaner job of getting through the neutral zone and establishing their forche in this game instead of trying to carry it through the layers of Florida they were content with chipping it in and playing the quote unquote Florida brand of hockey they had aggressive D’s on the wall turnovers below the goal line and a no BS approach when it comes to taking care of the puck in the neutral zone as for the Panthers blowing a three-goal lead is tough but this team is still mentally made out of titanium they are the cup champs for a reason when Florida is at their best their gaps are suffocating we of course saw flashes of this in game three but as Kachchuck said postgame there’s too many instances in game four where they got stretched out and gaps weren’t as tight as they were in games two and three that right there is the difference and either way this series heads back to Edmonton 2 to2 and based on how great these two teams are that’s exactly how it should be so what did you think of game four who pissed you off who
