room if you want to join us for some finals watches and also some watch alongs throughout the offseason as we prep for the next season of Detroit Pistons basketball well on today’s episode we’ll talk about trading for Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans we’ll discuss why the Pistons or why and why shouldn’t they extend Jane Ivy or Jaylen Duran and whe how the decision on either one of those players gives you an insight on what this team’s thinking about team breakdown or team buildingwise and then also should the Detroit Pistons be resigning THA and Dennis Shrew we’ll talk about that coming up but let’s get into it let’s talk about Trey Murphy III if you haven’t noticed over the last like five episodes they’ve all been trade episodes all of them have just been talking about trade season trade season trade season there’s a lot of guys that we’re seeing thrown into the trade market thrown into the trade rumors chams has come out and said that he thinks this offseason is going to be one of the most hectic seasons in the NBA or in the hectic off seasonasons in the NBA that he’s seen so everyone’s prepping for this crazy trade season coming up around the NBA draft and a name that’s popped up every now and then over the last few weeks is Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans now I want to make this very clear from what I’ve heard because once his name started popping up I started asking some people from what I understand the Pelicans aren’t actually wanting to trade him a lot of this is noise from other teams and if the Pelicans were to trade him they are setting the price at such a high bar that they don’t think anyone would actually meet it so I don’t believe based on what I’ve heard that they will actually trade Trey Murphy the third if they do a team must have met this asking price that they’ve set that they didn’t think a team would actually meet um so we’ll see what happens but I do not think they’re actually going to trade Trey Murphy a third that’s first however if they were to trade Trey Murphy that is the player that the Pistons should go all in for this isn’t like a you know a Lari market and when you’re arguing about it this isn’t uh his Trey Murphy the third’s teammate which has come up at times who’s another player kevin Durant all of those have on you know negatives and positives to him trey Murphy the third is if he were to become available to where you could actually could trade for him that’s the guy you empty I would empty the asset chamber for not entirely not the entire thing but I’m giving up hella assets to go after Trey Murphy the third and there’s quite a few reasons why first of all he’s a big wing with that is an absolute lights out shooter lights out shooter and showed he showed some improvement as an onball creator as an onball scorer this past season for the New Orleans Pelicans as well now he did deal with injuries this past year but the entire Pelicans organization was just snake bitten with injury this past year i I don’t know what’s going on over there but they’re just it is what it is but he had a huge jump this year going from 14 points a game to 21 points a game shot 45% from the field 36% from deep on eight attempts a game on 59.8 true shooting percentage trey Murphy the third is absolutely legit he is a long lengthy strong big wing that can absolute spark it from beyond the ark that can attack closeups that can create a little bit for himself who’s only getting better as an offensive creator he is a fantastic basketball player fantastic and I think he’s never going to be an all-star in the Western Conference that’s I don’t think that’s ever going to happen maybe if the Pelicans like have a really good season he makes it that way in the East I think he would be an all-star eventually maybe next year i think he will be an all-star if he was in the Eastern Conference if he’s in the West it’s going to be hard to the West is just that deep but the other part of Trey Murphy the third that makes him such an an automatic have to go get him he is the guy you empty everything for his contract’s absolutely amazing he is going to be on probably one of the best contracts one of the best value contracts for a player of his caliber in the NBA he’s getting paid 25 million this year 27 the next year 29 the next year and then 31 the next year after that so you got locked up for four years and the amount of cap space that he’s taking up 16% 15.8% 15.5% 15.0% of the cap he’s going down in the amount of cap percentage he’s taking up and he’s this caliber of player at just 25 years old you’re getting him in the middle of his prime as well that all of that is absolute perfect scenario he fits perfectly with Cade fits perfectly with this team he was a Traanian Landon draft pick he is he is absolutely if he was actually available he is absolutely the very top of the list of you give up stuff to go get him now I question whether he actually is available i don’t think he actually is but if he was that’s the dude you go get fantastic basketball player so now what would a trade look like so this is the problem here though with a trade the Pelicans are over the first apron so you have to match match salaries or you have to absorb contracts so the there’s two different trades I’ve looked at that you could potentially do that I think would probably have to be would have to happen if you wanted to get Trey Murphy the third first one is you have to take on C.J mccullum with them because you have to absorb some contract to make it happen some cap space so you take on Trey Murphy and CJ McCullum you trade Tobias Harris you trade Simony Fonteo and then the assets because those two guys are really just Sally matching matching the assets are Jane Ivy a 2027 first round pick and a 2029 first round pick that’s the first trade I think of that you can maybe make it happen i again I don’t believe based on what I’ve heard that they actually are trying to trade Trey Murphy so therefore I think the Pelicans would respond with “Nah give us another first give us three first.” And at that point the Pistons probably say no but I I think that’s probably where the Pelicans are going to put the asking price because they don’t actually want to move them it’s going to take like a crazy offer for them to be like “Oh yeah okay fine we’ll trade them.” But that right there is an offer I would send the Pelicans tobias Jay Ivy Simony Fonteo 2027 first 2029 first for Tre Murphy and CJ McCullum that’s the first deal that you could potentially do the next deal you could do is if you don’t want to give up all of that you don’t want to give up as many picks the problem is you would then have to remove Tobias and you’d have to put Isaiah Stewart in the trade instead you take out CJ McCullum so now you’re really just going after Trey Murphy it’s going to be Isaiah Stewart Jane Ivy and a first round pick that’s probably the next deal that you could do for Trey Murphy i’ve heard that the Pelicans have wanted Isaiah Stewart for a while now for a few years they’ve really liked him so that’s another deal you can do the problem with every trade the Pistons are going to do you either have to move off of Tobias or Isaiah Stewart to to match salaries they have to be included in one of the trades and because New Orleans is a first apron team if you include Tobias that’s probably a deal that you have to go and include CJ so you can take on salary back if you don’t want to take on CJ and his expiring salary back which I don’t think would be a bad thing I’d take CJ back on expiring i think he’s still a good player if you don’t want to do that then you would have to ship out Isaiah Stewart Ivy in a first and just get Trey Murphy in return and would you do that don’t know don’t know if Pistons fans would do it all I know is is that Trey Murphy would be at the very top of my list he’s over Lori he’s over KD he’s over Zion he’s over all these guys if you could get Trey Murphy you do it he’s on a fantastic contract he’s a fantastic basketball player he fits exactly what this team needs a big wing that can spark it has offensive game to him only improving hitting his prime and you have him cost controlled team controlled for the next four years he’s he’s absolutely the most perfect gate you could you could possibly think of it’s just a matter of are the Pelicans actually trying to move him and if they were to move him are you willing to meet their high asking price i want to give you guys these stats just real quickly on Trey Murphy from this past year spotups 94th percentile transition 74th percentile as a Roman man 80th percentile cuts 58th percentile putbacks 87th percentile miscellaneous which is random ways you can score that aren’t really a play type 97th percentile absolutely i want him absolutely attack closeouts wo are you guys willing though to meet that asking price that it would take to get Trey Murphy the third let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter Cooko coming up are the Pistons going to extend Jane Ivy and Jaylen Dur and if they do decide to extend either guy what that means moving forward team building wise I’ll break it down coming up all right guys i want you guys to look at the screen those you guys are watching on YouTube you guys see this listen of every single day we’re free and available on all your podcast platforms if you haven’t already head to the YouTube channel at Locked OnPistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a fivestar review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast later on we’ll discuss whether the Pistons should resign Dan Shruder and THJ but we’re gonna now get into whether the Pistons should extend Jay Ivy and Jaylen Jern and what it means if they extend either one of those guys and this is going to be a conversation we’ve already talked about it once this offseason we’ll probably talk about about three four five maybe six times until we finally get a decision on what they’re going to do because this is going to dominate the offseason community topic whatever within the Pistons community this is going to dominate all all topics throughout the whole offseason so the reason why I wanted to talk about it again is not just because I want to talk about obviously okay well what happens how much would you pay them etc etc I really want to talk about it because after if you decide to pay him what does that mean moving forward that’s where I want to get into so Jane Ivy and Jaylen Duran how much would I pay them if I wanted to extend them Jane Ivy let’s just be real I’ll tell you guys where I’m at with their financial situation I want to pay Jane Ivy somewhere between 20 and $25 million i really don’t want to get up to $25 million cuz I’m not sure what player he is i’m not sure how good of a player he is i’m not sure if this last season how he played the last five games with him actually turning his season around and making an improvement or if it was just a hot stretch he didn’t improve as a finisher he didn’t really improve in inside the three-point line he became a much better three-point shooter this past year over the last five really taken off over the last five games but is that a hot streak is actually a player he was can I bank on him developing the other parts of his game do I want to make that commitment right now and s and get a player that I’m not sure how good he is locked down in a contract 25 plus million don’t know so I if I am going to extend Jay Ivy I’d want it to be around 20 to $25 million with Jaylen Duran if I were to extend Jaylen Duran I’d probably would give him a 4-year $100 million contract that’s that’s what I would offer him which is around $25 million i don’t feel great about doing that one either because of the data that tells us that defensively they’re fine with Assar and Dur on the floor but when Assar leaves the floor Duran just hasn’t been able to hold up defensively so I still have questions of are you actually improved defensively or are you are you just surviving off the back basically of Assar when he’s on the floor defensively if he can improve defensively then I think he 100% would be worth that contract i also like a lot of the offensive stuff he improved upon this year you saw him with a lot of on ball responsibility this past year for the Pistons he ran a ton of DHOs you even started to see the Pistons run some inverted screens for him later on in the year and that’s when you have a guard set a screen for Jaylen Dur now he’s the ball handler in the pick and roll and he’s going to the basket you saw him do a lot of that at the end of the year you saw him take some defensive rebounds to go four court offensively he has a unique play style doesn’t really he can’t really shoot he’s not going to be a shooter at any point of his career but he’s a his ability to be a DHO hub be a good passer make short roll reads catch everything around the rim be a legit elite lob threat I think and because of Kad’s um I don’t want to say demand but Kad’s need I would say to have a lob threat on the floor that would make me feel more at ease giving it to Jaylen Duran rather than Jay Ivy shouldn’t have had that drink of lollipop now I I I my I’m over here burping trying to um but uh J yeah I I’d give Jaylen Duran four years 100 million i don’t really want to go over that at all and I’m kind of scream scream about doing that too i don’t I don’t really like like that at all um but I do it because I because of the reasons I just mentioned however now this is where I really want to get into if the Pistons extend either one of these guys what does this mean and we’ve hit on this the last few podcasts especially talking about Jaylen Duran is that we’ve heard that the Pistons have this interest they have this want apparently according to Mark Stein and some of these reports that they want to go get a stretch five they want to get a stretch big they want to they have interest in Miles Turner they have interest in guys like that well if they resign Jaylen Duran if they extend Jaylen Dur I should say not resign if they extend him that should do away with all of that talk that should do away or at least at least gives you an idea that they believe Assar and Jaylen Dur can fit together they believe that they can peak offensively with those guys they believe they can hit their ceiling with those guys offensively and they they no longer either one the rumors were not true or two they don’t feel strongly enough that having a stretch big would help them more than having Jaylen Duran and SR so they’ve resorted to taking Jaylen Duran and now want to build around Jaylen Duran and Assar Thompson as your front court guys and if that is the case that’s fine I’m not saying that’s wrong if that is the case you then need to make sure like we talked about last offseason they did a fine job of that this season but I you need to upgrade upon that you then need to make sure you have snipers at every position around them you need Assar to really improve with his on ball play making on ball uh or his just ball handling in general so you can trust him with the ball in his hands a little bit more and you really need to put heavy emphasis on executing the spacing from game to game within the half court when you have two non-shooters you have to execute spacing in the half court because if you are just slightly off if you are just slightly in the wrong spot it will ruin all the spacing it will make everything look junky it’s going to be hard to really score within the half court but if they ext if they decide to extend Jaylen Duran that tells me that they do not feel as strongly about needing a stretch five next to Assar and they believe those guys can make it work moving forward the next thing that has me wondering is what do they think about Ron Holland do they really believe Ron Holland is going to become this lights out three-point shooter because that’s the only way that you’d be able to play at some point Ron Assar and Duran you can’t play Ron Assar and Duran with Ron being a 33% three-point shooter that wouldn’t be good enough you can’t have two non-shooters and then one of your shooters be like a 33% shooter everyone else on the floor needs to be able to just spark it so if you extend Duran and you believe in the duo of Assar and Durn which again I’m not saying is wrong then either one you have strong belief strong belief that Ryan Holland will become a not just a you know okay he’s passable we’ll take it I guess he’s going to become a legit three-point shooter or maybe Ron Holland is the guy that gets thrown into one of these trades this offseason that we’re that that have been uh rumored and the Pistons maybe take a swing with him as the piece in the trade who knows but those are that’s where my mind will go if they extend Jaylen Durren those are all the thoughts that will come into my head if you extend Jaylen Durren if you extend Jaden Ivy what you’re telling me is is that you believe because I don’t think Jayen Ivy from what I understand from what I understand is going to take a lowv value contract he wants he’s going to get paid he thinks he’s he wants to get paid his camp wants to get look they if he is getting extended he’s not getting extended for $20 million a year heck I wonder if he’s even would get extended for 25 I think he I if you extend Jane Ivy I think it’s going to have to be where he agrees to it at least I believe might be even 25 plus million over 25 maybe if you do that you are telling me that you 100% believe that he is the guy next to Kate he’s going to be the second guy and he better be the second guy if you are extending him to that type of money he better be the second guy and he better build upon what he did last year because you’re not paying that for a six-man you’re not paying that for a guy that comes off your bench and as a lights out you know at his speak a lights out scorer you know one of those that’s not what you’re paying that’s not what you’re paying that guy for if you are extending Jane Ivy you are believing he is the second fiddle next to Cade he is the second option and you guys can go somewhere with that duo as your two main scoring options within the half court you better that that’s what I that’s what my takeaway will be if you extend Jay and Ivy and to build around them you will need Assar you will need another four I believe who is a much better defender than Tobias and an improvement at the four position and you will need Jaylen Duran to get much better defensively and you will need Jayen Ivy to get much better defensively because then you you’re going to have somewhat of the same issues you had in the playoffs where you have two guys that aren’t the greatest defenders on the floor so your other guys better be great cade can get away with it assaar can get away with it your fourth guy the power forward he better be a legit defender he can’t get picked on your future forward that you have he better be a good defender if you extend Jay Ivy to that type of contract so that’s where my mind goes so with that said would you extend Jay Ivy would you extend Jaylen Duran and if you do how do you move forward then team building wise let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter coming up would you resign Dennis Rutder and THJ this off season i’ll give you guys my opinion it’s a no for at least one of them i’ll tell you guys who that is coming up the NBA finals are in full swing and every night delivers highlight worthy performances major momentum shifts and can’t miss moments whether it’s a game-winning shot or a breakout player there’s never been a better time to get in on the action fanduel makes it easy to stay in the game before betting partner of the NBA so I want to thank you guys again make locked on Pistons your first listen every single day we are free and available on all your podcast platforms if you haven’t already head to the YouTube channel at Lackdon Pistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a fivestar review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast head to the description down below for the playback and for the substack to check both those things out for me great way to support me as well but let’s go ahead and get into it it is expected that the Detroit Pistons will be entering this off seasonason and will enter free agency as an overthe cap team the reason we we went deep into why they would do that uh with Keith Smith last week if you haven’t listened to that episode make sure you guys go check it out keith Smith the spot track make sure you guys go check that out um but to give a brief reason for why they would do that because they keep the bird rights to Dennis Shruder and THJ uh and they can give Malik Beasley the $14 million MLE if they don’t operate as an over the cap team the most they can create by releasing all the catapults would be just $16 million and then you would you you’re not creating that much more flexibility and then you lose the bird rights to resign THJ and Dennis Shruder so unless something major or unless something comes out of nowhere and they have a plan that we don’t know about that that no one knows about they are going to operate as an overthe cap team with that said that means they can resign Dennis Rutder and THA going into the cap because they have their bird rights so now the question is do you would you resign either one of those guys well let me start with the one I would not resign i would like to upgrade from and that is THJ i think the Pistons should upgrade from THJ i don’t think they should resign him i think you can be happy with what he brought this past season i think you can be happy with the veteran leadership he brought i think you can be happy with the personality and everything he brought to last season’s basketball team in the locker room i think you can appreciate all of that and also acknowledge in order for this team to keep going and keep taking the next steps they need to improve upon his position he’s not the greatest defender he’s not a very good defender he’s very up and down as a shooter he had a fine season shooting but he’s very up and down sometimes he’ll win you a game sometimes he’ll go 08 he’s a fine player but it’s someone that you would probably like to upgrade from so I am not impro I am not resigning THJ and if I do I’m resigning him to be like the ninth or tenth guy in order for the Pistons to take the next step they need to improve upon rotation pieces at the very least i would not resign THJ i would look for a way to somehow improve upon his position dennis Shruder dennis Shruder is going to be the interest one interesting one because we’ve gotten recent reports that there are going to be some good players maybe players like Taius Jones a guy like Malcolm Bragden and maybe even some other players that are forced to take the vet men that are forced to take a lesser contract because not many teams right now have cap space a lot of teams will have the mole whatever but maybe some guys would rather sign a one-year contract like a Malik Beasley did come back out and agency next year and try to get a bigger payday or some guys will just sign for the Vetmin and say “You know what i’d rather sign for the Vetmin for a team that will win give me a better chance to look better so I can then come out for free for agency next year and and get a a bigger contract.” And that’s where Dennis Shruder becomes interesting because I I would be fine bringing back Dann point guard i thought he was good especially in the playoffs i thought during the season he was a little up and down but in the playoffs he absolutely delivered i thought he was great as a backup point guard for the Pistons in the playoffs way better than I thought he could be so I definitely would be fine resigning Dennis Shruder and having him to be the backup point guard the question is would you rather have Dennis Shruder or if you could would you rather sign Tyus Jones for the minimum i think Tyus Jones is better than Shruder would you rather have Tus Jones or Shruder i can appreciate what Shruder did say thank you to him say he played really good in the playoffs for him while at the same time saying I think Tus Jones is better moving forward would rather have Taius Jones for the minimum that’s what I would do if you could if you could get Tyus Jones would you rather have a Malcolm Brogden now Bragton’s dealt with injuries so maybe that scares you away from a Malcolm Brockton so I think when Malcolm Brogdom’s healthy I think he’s better than Dennis Shruder so in that scenario would you say thank you Shruder for everything you did shake his hand you did great i really appreciate you hope you play well wherever you end up and then go get Malcolm Bragton i would i think Malcolm Bragton’s better but if you can’t get either of those two guys I would just resign Dennis Shruder because I think he was good he was good enough and I would be fine i would be fine having him on the team i don’t think you have to improve upon his position that much really for this team to take a next step he was the backup point guard with Ivy back his n will probably go down anyways he won’t be featured as much with Ivy coming back so yeah I’d resign Shruder but I would see if I could maybe get a Tias Jones or a Malcolm Bragton for the minimum before I did that so Shruder I would say yeah bring him back unless you can upgrade with one of those guys thj I would respectfully say “Thank you for what you did you were great for this past season great in the locker room but we need to move we’re going to move in a different direction and try to improve upon your position.” That’s where my stance is as of right now so let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter Cuckahill would you guys resign THA and Dennis Shooter if you only pick one which one is it and how are you upgrading from them let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter Cookahill that’s all I’ve got for you guys today 1. Dennis Schroder hit clutch baskets all season long. He was steady Eddy with the ball. His dee was okay to even better than okay. He played very good backup point. THJ is no kid, he played streaky. He is expendable. Murphy is not what the Pistons need. Pistons need a tall quality PF.

  2. talking about selling the farm for Murphy (cant play PF full time) but still no video on JJJ. You dont know ball Ku. Tell Locked On to contact me so I can get this community straight. You failed.

  3. Would love the Pistons to trade for Trey Murphy but I don't believe the Pistons should empty the chamber for him. To me he's a 3rd/4th option on a Championship team. The Knicks went all in on a similar player in Mikal Bridges and it was rough fit for him. He's was a very tentative 4th option on the Knicks after averaging 20+ with the Nets. Murphy's defense is legit but if you are emptying the chamber of assets can he be that number 2 scorer with his limited offensive ability when the Pistons need it is my question? Ku is right though the contract is great I just don't agree you give up all your assets for him that's reserves for top 20 players in the league.
