The Day After: Edmonton Oilers 2, Florida Panthers 5 Discussion | FLA Leads 3-2
hello Oilers fans austin here with today’s day after discussion of the Oilers abysmal 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers last night in game five at Rogers place the Oilers came into the Stanley Cup final with home ice advantage and they have lost two out of three on home ice they are 1 and one in Sunrise and if they want to extend this series if they don’t want to watch the Florida Panthers hoist Lord Stanley for the second consecutive season well they’re going to have to just find a way to dig in and play much better than they have throughout a lot of this series honestly uh the time spent leading for the Emmonton Oilers in this series combined five games 30 minutes the Oilers have been leading for 30 minutes total they led for bit in game one they led for bit in game two and I’m pretty sure they have not led since then so it’s it’s it’s not a good look here and it’s not looking good for the Oilers it is looking very very bleak it is looking very very grim here in oil country and for Florida Panthers fans you must be feeling pretty darn good i imagine you’re all feeling amazing today the day after uh and I don’t blame you florida they came into Edmonton they played a perfect game an absolute textbook perfect road game they executed their plan to at the Mton Oilers had no answer and for some reason Emmonton’s answer was just trying to rim the puck around the boards in the defensive zone as if Florida doesn’t like actively pinch to keep pucks alive so I don’t know what the Oilers are doing i don’t know what they’re going to do moving forward in today’s day after discussion we’re kind of going to take a look at the series as a whole a lot of the statistics from this series up to this point for both clubs and uh you’ll you’ll kind of see what I’m talking about when I say Florida has basically had the edge for most of this series yes there have been three overtime games those games can go either way it realistically Florida could have already ended this thing right like if they didn’t blow that lead in game four which was a historic comeback for the Emmonton Oilers they would have been hoisting that cup last night and the fact that you had 19,000 fans pack Rogers Place you had another 35,000 fans outside of Rogers Place you have the whole province with you you have a very large portion of Canada on your side and and the effort that we saw from the Oilers last night was um I I would call it unacceptable and incredibly disappointing last night my reaction was not like crash out rage territory it it was legitimately like a parent that’s not mad they’re just disappointed that’s how I felt and Edmonton they’re in the hole now this is the first time that they have had their backs against the wall in these playoffs they have not been in an elimination game where they could be eliminated as of yet because in that Kings series they were down two games to none they won four straight in the Vegas series they never um were trailed in the series and against Dallas they lost the first game then rattled off four straight wins now against the Panthers this is the first time the Oilers have lost three games in a single series in the postseason and they have to win two straight to win the Stanley Cup and will it happen probably not honestly it likely won’t happen and I’m not here to like you know dampen people’s you know positivity and hopes because hope never dies in oil country we’ve seen this team rally all throughout the season all throughout the playoffs but the writing is on the wall and if we want to make sure that writing does not get etched forever um the team has to find a way to turn it around so let’s kind of just jump right into things here uh series tied 22 that is wrong florida leads 32 there we go we’ll make sure the Panthers fans don’t yell at me for that florida leads three games to two oh my goodness and uh yeah so at the bottom of the screen you’ll see the stats from last night’s game uh the score was 5-2 for the Florida Panthers the expected goals for for Edmonton 36.87% uh Cory4 52.34% the Oilers legitimately didn’t start putting pucks on net until that third period with about 10 minutes to go after they went down 3 nothing it was nice to see McDavid finally get on the board he got his first goal of the Stanley Cup final uh he he has seven points he’s he ranks second in the cup final in point production but he is a minus three and he only has one goal in this series the Oilers depth has completely disappeared here and the power play was just I mean the power play had an opportunity to really be the differencemaker last night for Edmonton and they couldn’t get the job done they had three power plays i think they had two or three shots on goal total in those three opportunities the top unit could not get anything going and that’s a credit to the Florida Panthers penalty kill florida’s penalty kill is the best in the postseason just like Edmonton’s was last year they even have a short-handed goal in this series so the Florida Panthers have been unbelievable uh at least the Oilers though they did kill two penalties last night their penalty kill actually stepped up they killed two can you believe it the Oilers threw 25 hits in the entire game which is pretty pretty interesting considering the Oilers barely even had the puck so I I take that as the team is exhausted they don’t have the energy to go for a hit and they’re probably also fairly injured the Florida Panthers hit totals were pretty low as well but again their hit totals are going to be low because they had the puck the whole game so why would they need to hit anyone when they legitimately are just controlling puck possession now when we take a look at the numbers overall here a five on five goals in this series 13 to9 for the Florida Panthers and series goals in total 23-6 for Florida so no matter how you shake it whether it is the special teams five on five penalty kill power play uh even strength net pulled overtime it doesn’t matter the Florida Panthers have been outscoring Edmonton by a significant margin in every category they have seven more goals than the Empton Oilers in the Stanley Cup final and it shows right they have the 3-2 series lead like I said the Oilers won two games in overtime and games that could go either way this series could have been over florida could have legitimately swept Edmonton this year like last year Florida was up three games to none uh for the most part deservedly so i didn’t think the Oilers played that great in last year’s uh final until about game four and then they turned it on i just don’t know if the team has it in them this season i hope they do right like I hope they do but hope is the only thing that we can cling to now in oil country uh if you take a look at the team save percentage in this series as well the Florida Panthers have a 916 team save percentage and the Mampton Oilers are sitting at an 859 this is also the other thing in the two games where the Oilers have gotten at least 900 goalending or better they’ve won both of those games that was in game one and game four those are the only two games in the entire Stanley Cup final where they have gotten at least a 900 save percentage from their starting goalender whether it’s Pickard or Skinner and that’s just not good enough right i know everyone likes to harp on the goalies i’m someone that has harped on the goalies a lot in the playoffs and the regular season but this it is starting to you know come to fruition now that the goalending in Edmonton is not good enough yes the defense is also not good enough the way uh they’re playing defensively the amount of chances that the Oilers are giving up and how much Florida is just feasting on their opportunities right the Florida Panthers they get they get that one opportunity and they’re putting the puck in the net if it’s a breakaway it’s in the net if it’s Brad Marshian uh making Ekholm look like a pylon it’s in the net sam Bennett’s taking a shot on goal well that’s going in the net too like there there’s no other way to put it florida is scoring the Oilers are not scoring babski is making saves edmonton’s two goalenders are not making saves the one game where uh we got saves which was from Calvin Pickard in game four when he came in relief of Steuart Skinner oh look the Oilers managed to come back and win can you believe it last night the Oilers got down early they were down often i’m pretty sure they were at 11 shots on goal heading to the third period that’s just like yikes yikes that’s a big yikers uh the Florida Panthers in this series they have seven power play goals and one short-handed goal the Edmonton Oilers have four power play goals and zero short-handed goals the Oilers power play needed to step up last night it had an opportunity to turn the game around had an opportunity to get them back in the game after they went down by a goal in the first period after Florida made it one- nothing the Oilers got themselves a power play they could have tied the game up they didn’t even register a single shot and then right after the power play expired Florida comes down and they get a goal to make it two nothing and the whole crowd was deflated the team was deflated the Florida Panthers they smelled blood in the water and they controlled the majority of the game after that and good for the Panthers like I said the Florida Panthers this is a team where now Oilers fans you’re going to you’re not going to like to hear this the Florida Panthers are legitimately maybe this version of the Panthers not even last year’s Florida Panthers team this year’s Florida Panthers team they remind me of the 2012 Los Angeles Kings just an absolute wagon a team that I mean that LA Kings team barely lost and Jonathan Quick was outstanding but just the way that this Florida Panthers team plays how little chances they give up and when they do give up a chance they have a goalie that can make the save and when they win a game they win uh emphatically they basically dominate in their wins and their losses are razor thin margins when Florida loses it’s an overtime it’s a one-goal game it’s usually very very close uh and when Florida wins uh I mean look at they’ve beaten the Oilers 5-2 and 6-1 in regulation in this series the Oilers don’t have an answer for the depth that Florida has they don’t have an answer hamster nice great job me lack of sleep here they don’t have an answer in goal they don’t have an answer when it comes to the forward depth they don’t have an answer on defense they don’t have an answer with the special teams and Florida this is legitimately maybe maybe the best team I have seen in the Stanley uh Cup or the Salary Cup era sorry the Stanley Cup era yeah the Stanley Cup era the entire history of the NHL no this is legitimately probably the best team I’ve ever seen in the salary cap era this Florida Panthers team is built differently bill Zto deserves so much credit for the team that he has put together in Florida and I don’t want to sound like I’m like actively just making it sound like Florida has won the cup already they haven’t they have to win one more game the Oilers have to win two you don’t win the thing until you win game four in the series so um you know it’s this Florida team though like as a hockey fan right i always talk about how I like hockey more than anything else i’m a hockey fan first Oilers fan second is how I’ve always been uh just appreciating what I’m watching as a hockey fan as much as it pains me I hate that it’s happening to my team two years in a row but what I’m witnessing right now from that Florida Panthers team what Bill Zo has accomplished as a general manager is nothing short of incredible that team deserves all the credit in the world um yes I’m huffing copium yes uh I’m delusional in thinking that the Oilers can still win the Stanley Cup but that’s what we do here in oil country we we hope we we pray to the hockey gods we do whatever we can uh we don’t give up on this team the Oilers fans have never given up on this team you know and I’m turning 32 later this summer i have never seen this team have success i see a lot of older fans fans that were around for the glory years in the 80s you know they they talk like fans like me don’t deserve to see a Stanley Cup because oh well the Oilers have five they had their time this is you know this is not their time kind of thing like I get that but as a as a passionate fan that you know cries when they lose big games and I’m not afraid to admit that I cry i cry when they win big games last year game six against Dallas shed many many tears when they clinched that cup final uh birth against Florida for the first time there there’s a lot of passion there’s a lot of emotion in oil country a lot of us just want this so bad and I I’m at the point where you know will I get to see a a championship in my lifetime will will I get to see finally Conor McDavid and Leon Dryidle two of the best players in the world that deserve to have that cup hoisted over their head will I ever get to see that the doubt does slip in you know during the decade of darkness nothing had ever been darker as an Oilers fan uh when they when they won the lottery to have the right to draft Conor McDavid all of us thought that that was the the moment where we’re like “Okay we’re getting a generational talent it’s only a matter of time.” And the the organization and the team has fumbled almost every single step of the way they have not had proper management they have not had a good foundation to build off of it has basically been Leon and Connor and then the rest but this year the Oilers finally were getting depth scoring they were getting scoring up and down the lineup they had guys stepping up it wasn’t always just Connor and Leon but now that the cup finals have hit it’s Connor and Leon and nobody else has shown up and it’s incredibly disappointing here and the Florida Panthers though like I said they’ve been a great team all year yes they had their ups and downs in the regular season uh just like the Oilers did you know Florida finished with what 98 points in the standings and I I think this without question goes to show that where you finish in the standings does not reflect how strong of a team you are florida was a strong analytic team during the regular season they just didn’t quite have the puck luck things have turned around for them in the postseason and of course they got healthier they got Ecklad back from his uh performance-enhancing drug suspension by the way I would be testing every single Ford Panther for performance-enhancing drugs forever ecklad has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs nate Schmidt when he was on the Vegas Golden Knights he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs it is not uncommon to see that in the in the NHL and the fact that there are a couple players who have been notorious for it now in Florida I I I want I want that urine sample i want that urine i want the urine sample from everyone in Florida and do it for the Oilers too do it for Cory Perry take Cory Perry’s urine sample cory Perry has 10 goals in the playoffs man 10 10 goals he’s 40 years old cory Perry with 10 goals in the postseason that is unbelievable he has three goals in five games in the cup final where’s everyone else where’s the depth for Edmonton here what are we doing how is Cory Perry going to score more goals than anyone else in that bottom six i don’t get it man where’s Connor Brown where’s Matias Yanmark where’s Adam Henrik where’s Trent Frederick where’s Victor Arvdson where’s Casper Kappan where are they where is the goals where are they i don’t know dryle has four mcdavid has one perry has three and that what was is that it that’s about it huh nurse has one good for him that’s great uh Bart has one I think it’s just It sucks it sucks now I’m just kind of rambling i I totally just like stopped talking about the numbers on the right side of the screen i’m just rambling now uh the series expected goals percentage uh according to Evolving Hockey Florida sitting at 50.06% the Oilers at 49.94% so if you take a look at the expected goals in all situations this is a dead even series in terms of quality chances the expected goals for expected goals against it’s dead even the difference right now is Florida is capitalizing on their opportunities and the Edmonton Oilers are not capitalizing on their opportunity and of course special teams plays into that too the Florida Panthers speaking of puck luck their PDO in this series 1051 a full five points above average the Edmonton Oilers PDO 948 a full five points below what is considered average now what is PDO you may be asking that is team shooting percentage plus save percentage generally a 1.0 is considered like average you’re not lucky you’re not unlucky you are what you are the Florida Panthers they’ve been running a PDO of like 105 the entire postseason this is one of the longest sustained runs of a high PDO I have seen probably since the Vegas series in 2023 uh or not the Vegas series but the Vegas Golden Knights their cup run in 2023 uh Vegas also had a PDO of 105 sustained throughout that entire cup run everything was going in the net for them they were getting the saves that they needed from Aiden Hill when he came in uh as the third string and then took over as as the starter the Florida Panthers very similar type of run where they dominate games but they’re also getting saves and everything they put on net is going it the Edmonton Oilers this series specifically there’s no puck luck but they’re also not generating enough to deserve that puck luck so I if if there’s any hope for Edmonton to come back if they win game six and force a game seven maybe just maybe there’s enough adrenaline to get them through the finish line but winning that game six on the road is going to be incredibly difficult almost impossible i would give the Oilers maybe like a 3% chance of winning game six cuz Florida they’re going to come out they’re going to establish their game florida’s crowd’s going to be loud they have the energy to feed off of they have last change so Paul Maurice he gets to put his matchups that he wants the Oilers didn’t take advantage of home ice florida has taken it they have taken it and they have a chance to win the cup once again speaking of depth and scoring in this series the Oilers have seven players that have played in the cup final without a single point seven players on Edmonton that have stepped into the lineup have zero points florida has four players without a point so that also goes to show just how uh incredible the depth on the Panthers has been and one of the players on Florida that doesn’t have a point is Yesper Bokefist who played games one and two because AJ Greer was injured and then AJ Greer has only played three games so he also has zero points so you you could realistically say most of Florida’s like regulars have at least one point the Oilers many of their regulars don’t have a single point if we take a look at uh we take a look at the stats for the whole series here dry Cidle he leads the the Stanley Cup final in points four goals four assists mcdavid one goal six assists yes they’re both a minus three and that’s going to happen considering you know empty net goals against um and then of course when they’re on the ice when you know they give up breakaways to Brad Marshian well that’ll also put them in the minuses as well dry Cidle also only has 14 shots on goal in this series which is a little bit strange that’s just less than three shots on goal per game he didn’t have a shot attempt I believe in game what was it game three game four game three I don’t remember what game they were saying dilda didn’t even get a shot attempt it might have been game three uh Brad Marshian with six goals in five games marian has just The fact that Florida got Marian for a second rounder that did turn into a first but that’s crazy to me man what is Boston doing why did they do that i’m still mad about it sam Reinhardt everyone talks about you know Reinhardt and Barov shutting down McDavid well Reinhardt’s a minus three he has one less point than McDavid everyone’s like “Oh Reinhardt and Bararkov they’re shutting McDavid down where’s Where’s Barov where where’s Sasha Barov oh here he is zero goals in this series a minus three and three points.” So you know a lot of Panthers fans are saying “Ah Barov and Reinhardt they’re shutting McDavid down.” Blah florida is basically winning this series off the back of their second and third lines bennett has uh five goals marshand has six goals kachchuck has six points like look at this cory Perry has three goals look at that love to see that but yeah Barkov doesn’t have a single goal in this series kappan has three points in four games he’s a plus minus of zero but he only has four shots on goal right kappan doesn’t shoot the puck they need guys who can shoot the puck look at Villi Bud Coo has five shots on goal in the whole series man n only has 10 shots on goal and I’m pretty sure most of those came in the last two games nan Hopkins we know is hurt but that’s no excuse no excuse at all kulov has been great he’s a plus4 rating eblad has one point plus minus rating of zero and Forsling the you know everyone’s like “Oh Eblad and Forsling they’ve just been shutting the door.” Have they Have they actually been shutting the door like I said it’s it’s one of those things where you know I just think the Oilers aren’t getting enough from the players that they need more from and the depth on Florida has completely taken over this series and unless that changes unless the bottom six for Remon can find a way to start producing series is going to be over on Tuesday night uh and like I said time leading in the series the Florida Panthers 200 minutes 25 seconds the Mton Oilers 33 minutes 51 seconds and um yeah that’s I don’t know what else to talk about i could sit here and ramble and complain and vent i could just vent I guess but I’m not going to do that i am going to enjoy the rest of my weekend i hope you all enjoy yours i hope you all enjoy the rest of your Sunday if you’re watching this on a Sunday if you happen to be watching this on Monday the 16th of June of course happy Monday enjoy your weekend happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads out there including to my own dad the greatest dad on the planet uh I am blessed to have an incredible father in my life and if if you know if you don’t have one whoever is a father figure to you in your life I hope they also have an amazing day and uh obviously happy Father’s Day to all the soon tobe dads right even if uh you have you have a wife that is due but you don’t have a child yet you’re still a dad in my opinion so happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads out there you all deserve the best day in the world you all deserve to relax not be angry and stressed at hockey um we’ll see if the Oilers can find a way to turn things around tomorrow I will likely have no content unless there’s like some breaking news you know if the Oilers announce that McDavid can’t play because he’s hurt like that would be crazy breaking news so uh tomorrow no video tuesday morning before game six I will have a uh pregame report up and then Tuesday night 6 PM local time I will go live here on the Austin Hockey YouTube channel for the live playbyplay and I’ll hang out with chat and hopefully Hypno Toad doesn’t donate the amount of money that he did in last night’s stream because that was crazy hypno Toad if you’re watching calm down brother i’m going to cut you off i swear have a great day Oil Country tell someone that you love them and as always fight like a kid fight like Ben let’s go Oilers we’ll see you soon

i think this series is about a team that doesn’t let teams back in vs. a team that can never be counted out. The oilers are a great team, but I keep going back to the islanders vs. the oilers and I wonder if they peaked at the same time? Does defense win championships? Or just enough defense? The panthers are a defense first team, not proud of their strong defensive efforts, but upset when they win despite of a poor defensive showing. Oilers are an offensive powerhouse that has focused on playing better defense. Maybe the question is whether it is harder to create offense vs. stifle its creation? Great series and has raised questions for both teams about their identities.
Panthers fan, cats in Infinity?
Bob is a wall, Oil look deflated and resigned. But, they are also full up surprises expect a bounce on Tues. It's not over yet.
The bottom line is Mcdavid is not in the same League as GRETZ MARIO ORR SID MESSIER SAKIC YZERMAN HOWE and the list goes on. Based on talent he is an all timer but based on the player… i don't have him in the top 25 all time. He has been a ghost in too many finals games. He is about to be 0-2 in the finals. He is not a good leader and he is not a winner. I can't wait to see him cry like a little kid the same way he did last year after his game 7 no show. I never ever want to hear mcghosts name in the same sentence as the all time goats ever again. Panthers in 6
Florida has a real #1 goalie. Edmonton doesnt
EDM has two elite backup goalies.
the oilers look worse and worse by the game. the panthers have dragged this series to the deepest Florida water and the oilers are gasping for air. if it makes you feel any better, the only reason the oilers get so far in the playoffs is because the current playoff format allows them to avoid hard teams in the first two rounds. if they had to play the avs every playoffs, they'd be out in the first round. the oilers dont belong in the cup finals, that is beyond clear.
Leafs suck.
Also I love watching mcbaby cry.. looking forward to season 2 Amazon prime nhl series. F the oilers, they are my enemy
Chin up and stop talking about the opposition
I care less about Florida what you need to understand Edmonton has to hop floridas rebounds there goalie gives up way to many rebounds that are juicy second chances bury those and Florida loses every time I don’t know why teams don’t do this
only shot the Oilers got at a cup is to trade the one trick pony and surround Leon with real winners and clutch players that knows how to play defensively.
The Edmonton Hamster Wheel 🛞
this is what i see , maple leafs folded to the panthers not say Panthers aren't good they are but Toronto is better than that display now the panthers wiping the rug with Edmonton come on , with the caliber of players on Toronto and Edmonton even Winnipeg really panthers are that much better than them I don't think so it's all rigged all the way down Oilers , Leafs Sell out teams period
When Edmonton had a good goalie, they were unbeatable. Fuhr, Ranford, Cujo and Salo and lastly, Dwayne Roloson. As a fan I had 100% confidence that these guys would make up for a bad pass or a breakaway etc. They do not have that. I didn't expect them to get this far with them. No one did. McDavid and Dry have been good, but this weakness is glaringly obvious against Florida.
Florida is the better team as we saw a game where the Ref's basically put their whistles away in game 5. Goodbye Edmonton~
As a Panthers fan, I really respect you and McDavid. If we lose this series, I would be sad but genuinely happy for McDavid. He’s such a threat on and off the puck. He’s a machine and I’m always scared when he has the puck but his contribution to the Oilers is incredible. He does deserve a cup. Honestly, I am sending you tons of respect to you and the Oilers. Game 4 was a true testament to Oiler mentality. You guys don’t give up and it’s never Easy to beat yall. I have really enjoyed last years series and this years. Happy Father’s Day man!
by the way why no one is mentionning the clueless stunt by McDiva stupid GF throwing shades at Marchand in the playoffs hahaha think it sparked Marchand.
This is the first time I have heard an oilers fan not mention how 'biased' the refs are. Well done from CBJ country.
Oilers will bring us a game 7 !!
cutting out 'i want a urine sample from everyone in florida' for the soundboard
Panthers dump it in and execute the Oilers dump it in and Panthers have a free puck to regroup I DONT GET IT..
Panthers have a corner game like NO other they dominate in the corners..
When there is a goalie with high goals its a shitty team in front of them..
sorry to say, the oil will go to there grave, back to back, cup finals! tht will put mcd legacy in the dumpster!
