just about set and pitching in this game Carlos Rodon base runners are tough to come by with him out there Chris well what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season so when you consider consistency the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners that’s critical in winning games today especially when teams are depending on the big swing the home run to win ball games go odon ready here it comes and that one clips the corner [Applause] rodon ready the O2 on the way swing and a miss stuck him out one out in the top of the first oh really went aggressive in with that slider good two strike pitch right there at worst case scenario it’s weak contact in play exactly where he and the catcher wanted it and next for LA Nolan Shanuel and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike rodone when you talk about his skill set he stops teams from getting hits that’s the thing that he’s so good at he’s just really difficult to get base hits against outside with a breaking ball well he’s got power and he has a reputation of being a striketh thrower so to his advantage he can expand the zone check swing called strike he can throw that fast ball slightly above the top of the strike zone to get hitters to chase he can also break it off because when you’re geared up for good velocity it’s hard to stay back you have to make a decision really early no anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot it’s a two or three-run homer two down base is empty and now batting Mike Trout check swing called strike and that is strike one so what’s the approach from an offensive perspective against a guy that doesn’t give up a lot of hits i think you just kind of have to lean out over the plate and you know take your base but seriously you you just have to try to shorten up i think guys choking up on the bat a little bit to have some more bat control be a little bit quicker and don’t get greedy and he couldn’t hold back he’s rung up on strikes angels held in check and now the Bombers will get their shot no score it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show back for more from the Bronx and towing the slab Jack Kachanowitz yeah he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners put his team in a position to win a ball game so we know he’s prepared we know this guy is a competitor and we’ll batting second the first as we take a look now at the New York Yankees lineup an offense that knows how to mash chris lots of power throughout the lineup they’re leading the league in homers right now yeah and I think when you’re facing a team like this pitchers coming in they see the stats they end up trying to nibble trying to work on the edges trying to expand the zone and so I think the key if these hitters can stay within themselves obviously they have the ability hit the ball a long way and score runs quickly so we’ll see how it goes in this one ben Rice in the box here lets that one go he was ready to hit right there nice line drive to the pole side right there but he didn’t spin off of it that’s the key you still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like plate calling balls and strikes maybe one of the most respected umpires around the league he’s not the kind of umpire that you’re likely to notice back there and that can be a huge compliment really so if you’re just kind of quietly doing your job staying consistent with your calls hitters pitchers managers even fans they’re all going to appreciate you ed Drummond he’s that kind of umpire fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires i mean you see them a lot yeah B they’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level so when you respect that I think over time you can develop a relationship with them swing and a miss struck him out oh he’s really dialed in and this offense is going to have to do something to try to break that rhythm maybe it’s square around the bond step out of the box agitate him a little bit do something that just changes what’s happening right now because at this pace it’s going to be attempt at the wall though he really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back at the play Oswalt PZA swwaying a ball driven out to center adele ranging back makes the grab and a leaping play at the wall lot of room in the center field area and that’s why he knows he’s got a chance to run it down and make a great play leaps at the fence excellent job robs the home run to end the inning top half of the third inning so in now for the Angels luis Reano reano well after scoring runs this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats inside and it’s one and0 he’s a master at hitting fast balls you need to be careful with location if you’re going to throw them this ball’s chopped on the ground vulpi leadoff hitter gone in the third christian Moore the next to hit looking for his first big league hit right here swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field judge makes the grab and there’s two away now batting shortstop Zack Neto zack Netto digs in now his first at bat was a strikeout sing you talk about a guy that has all the skills the range is really good but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays that’s in there and it’s 0 and one and because of that big power arm he’s able to play a little bit deeper make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner that’s impressive swing and a miss as he was out front one ball two straight [Applause] the shorts stop takes a ball two outs base is empty next one misses three and two now keeps the atbat going with a foul ball i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up and they’ll do it again [Music] oh look at the stop gathers and throws it’s there and that’s a great play nothing across here this half we head now to the home half of inning number three yankees three and the Angels nothing set for the bottom of the third now up is the Yankees DH Paul Goldmith gold Smith and first offering is fouled off [Applause] and the curve is down and in you know these Yankees doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side and here’s a stat for you Boo they’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at it’s pretty special stuff not so good if you’re out there on the mound there’s a swing and a drive and it hits the fence [Applause] all over that one right there he obviously put a very nice swing on that pitch and really drove it towards the gap but I’m pretty surprised he only ended up on first right there and it’s kind of hard to say if there was some hesitation or if they just decided to play it safe and now here is Ben Rice ruer at first with no outs here look out for the double play swings through that one for strike one this guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone if you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt that misses the zone and that’s ball two and a foul ball goldie aboard here at first with nobody out knocks that one away and we’ll do it again that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was fouls it back with two strikes well he hasn’t gotten the result yet but got to feel pretty confident three foul balls in a row he’s right on this guy three swing and a miss struck him out no advance good job behind the dish bogey just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count off and two boys and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone [Music] judge rips that one dives but it kicks off his glove they fired in quickly so it’s first and second with only one away so sound in his mechanics hits against the firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field here’s Cody Bellinger went down on strikes his first time through there’s the strike one out runners at first and second liner and this could be trouble here comes Goldie around third one run is in adele quickly gets it back in runner holds a third so just one across on the play puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there now the Angels manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan jack Kachanowitz will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base back with a new pitcher after this now pitching new pitcher in the game for the Angels sam Bachman getting ready to make his season debut so two in scoring position with one out anthony Vulpi getting ready to hit 0 for one so far that clips the corner [Applause] and that misses that’s ball one [Applause] fourth so in now for the Angels Nolan Showell pitch misses there one and0 for you growing up in New York City I mean you’re a big sports fan tell me about your experience with the Yankees growing up i really went to Sha Stadium more than I did to Yankee Stadium i grew up a Phillies fan there was one game though that I went to as a kid i sat in the upper deck it was the game that Bo Jackson hit three homers in his first three plate appearances and then hurt a shoulder diving for Dion Sanders inside the park home run that’s probably the most memorable game that I ever attended as a fan at Old Yankee Stadium [Music] flew open a little bit with that front shoulder but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch keep the bat alive kicks and deals outside low and now it’s three and two expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk here we go and down on strikes he goes picks up strikeout number seven just absolutely rolling on the mound he’s looking very much on his game in the early parts of this one boo fully on the attack with these hitters that’s seven strikeouts already so he’s got a good pace going no doubt tra slow second trip to the plate in this one singing four homers in 22 games at Old Yankee Stadium what do you remember well I remember my rookie year hitting two in one game and you know before that game in the clubhouse there was a gentleman there who owned a suit company there in downtown Manhattan and he said to me “Hey kid you hit a home run in the game tonight come over to the store tomorrow and I’ll give you a free suit.” Two down base is empty jorge Solair up at the plate one home run shy of 200 for his career ball one no strikes so I went into the game I happened to hit two when I walked into the store the next day and he looked at me he said “You’re trying to put me out of business aren’t you?” And that was a great great experience that I had as a rookie playing against the Yankees playing in New York one ball one strike so did Super Joe give you two suits super Joe hooked me up with two suits next offering is fouled back [Music] just missed [Music] that’s ball four tried another fast ball but missed the spot oh looking for a swing anding miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch but neither happened close pitch but a good take to earn that walk let’s go oh the next to hit takes ball one counts one and open swing and a miss and a count one and one spin rates outstanding on that high fast ball really tough to hit that’s too low and a count two and one two one solair off of first with two away and there’s the ball one strike that one is absolutely belted not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of it and here is Joe Adele ball one low two down nobody on top half of inning number four [Applause] next offering in there for a strike strike one looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located very top of the strike zone middle away two down nobody on fouls it off still one and two [Applause] battling here as he fouls it away two outs fights it off you’ll see another [Applause] and that one is lifted in the air bellinger sizing it up makes the grab that’ll do it yanks held in check but they still lead this one four-2 we go to the top of the fifth so in now for the Angels lamont Wade Jr rodone back to work wade goes 6’1 31 years old and he was a ninthround draft pick back in 2015 and that one upstairs ball one let’s go and that one almost hit him fouls one off two and two and that’s down and away waves at the bender for the strike out chris as we look back at the pitch sequence he hadn’t seen that curve ball at all how tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet yeah I mean you’re dialed up for something firm you never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball so you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch and right there clearly didn’t see what was coming rango in the box now no balls in a strike he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball here comes the one well I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning anything after that a hitter or two is bonus but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line outside with a breaking ball swing and a miss he was late strike two i think he was sitting off speed there one down base is empty missed with a change up and that’s ball three the Halos trailing by two and we’re in the top of the fifth and a swing and a miss that’s his ninth strike out so far now that here’s the second baseman Christian Moore and there’s one thing on his mind this at bat get that first in the bullpen for the Angels jose Soraniano the right-handed sinker baller he looks to be readying himself strickland warming up as well the 10 late on that fast ball just not able to catch up to that velocity high in the air out to right solair gets under it hauls it in for the out and a quick out number one the first baseman number 22 now the number two hitter Ben Rice he’s already homerred here in this one [Applause] and first offering is fouled off base is empty one away last half of inning number five and a breaking ball misses outside nasty back door slider there’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it so that’s a good take by him inside [Music] line drive caught it’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you’ve done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control aaron Judge at the plate he’s got the power but great contact skills one of the best contact hitters in the game right side and it finds its way through for a hit and that extends the inning for Cody Bellinger bellinger up to hit Yankee first pitch doesn’t find the zone counts one and0 yankees that’s ball two judge the runner at first with two gone swings and hits one in the air out towards right field solair makes the grab and that is that no runs one hit no errors and a man left five innings complete the Yankees four and the Angels two back in the Bronx all right we go to the top half of inning number six now it’s the Angels leadoff man Zack Neto first offering and it just misses swung on belted that one back there tattooed and gone he sends one out the opposite way his 11th of the year it’s 43 [Applause] well he almost robbed the home run right there and I tell you what he’d love another crack at it during batting practice you always like to work on that and so close but that one was just out of his reach now at the plate Nolan Showell and that’s in there at the knees oh you just got to delete it you give up that leadoff home run go back to work focus on this next batter [Applause] there’s a swing in a miss with the big bucks coming up and a home run already surrender he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters next pitch miss is inside and count one and two [Applause] popped up perzo gets under it and it’s caught for the owl now that designated hitter here’s Mike Trout the outfield playing him to pull with the center fielder positioned in that left center field gap so right-handed slugger at the plate chris he is surprised that the lefty is still in there extremely i mean you’ve got arms down in the bullpen and there’s somebody down there that can match up try to get out of this jam one’s the countoff foul [Applause] and a swinging miss and he keeps putting up the Ks that’s number 11 well take a look at the three pitch sequence here pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle and right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can do is hope to foul that off and now Jorge Solair there’s the strike solair with just one more homer to reach the 200 career mark you know we usually talk about bigger numbers when it comes to homers but only about 400 major leaguers have ever hit 200 round tripers in their careers he’s putting himself in great company that’s a ball two down base is empty but one run across and we’re the top half of the six cut out and miss curve ball struck him out but the Angels do get one back via the solo homer it’s now a 43 ball game bottom of the sixth inning stepping in Anthony Vulpi in the first pitch misses for ball one action in the Angels bullpen hector Nerys the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up next offering is fouled back [Music] so a foul ball makes it one and two the shorts stop takes the ball [Applause] still two and two after the foul ball [Music] just off the inside edge boom he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away that one misses so a lead off walk oh a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the catch he has the most confidence in right now just couldn’t find the strike zone digging in is the switch in outfielder Jason Dominguez bowl for two in this one he was late there strike one there was a high velocity fastball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust it swag and a miss and a foul ball he stays alive that was the emergency hack right there in the air left field down the line and out number one on the grab up next for the Yankees the second baseman DJ and now it’s DJ La digging in he’s two for two swaying and a miss there’s the slider 0 and one 01’s the count check on the runner vulpi back in on a dive yankees comes up empty that’s strike two two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an O2 count if you’re up there at the plate you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down misses now one and two just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation can’t say he’s convinced but it looks like he’s accepted it out to center adele sizing this one up pulls it down and there’s two gone as good as he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand you cannot hang a breaking ball right there lucky it stayed in the ballpark wells here’s the Yankees catcher now Austin Wells and he’s already left his mark on this game he certainly has Boo a two-run shot in the second inning and that made an early impact on this game in a big way that’s in there that’s strike one vulpi off of first with two away bachmann picks over and he’s back in there [Applause] that’s down and in a slider missed swinging a miss at a slider all sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box squirts away a little bit throw to second not in time he’s there easily and now a man into scoring position that’s a tough spot for the catcher move no chance of stopping the outside pitch and now the runner moves up those moments can be really frustrating [Applause] runner at second two down here in the bottom of the six lifted in the air down the left side that’s a base hit vulpi flying around third and headed home he’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they lead by two well done drives in the run i don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it that pitch was inside and he let it get really deep so pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it runner at first with two away oswalt PZA will hit next now will bullet to second base but he’s got it to end the inning welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound Fernando Cruz well the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game some of them are just wired different so we’ll see what he’s got here leading off for the Angels the catcher number 14 Logan Oh Hoppy [Music] come on Yankees that’s in there strike one late in the game everyone gets a little tighter way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there now a check swing but he held up one and one let’s go swing and a strike out seems that he was committed to swinging at this pitch regardless of where it was before the pitch was even released he’s in an 02 count and you’re looking to battle at that point trying to protect the zone so you do become a little more swing happy but on a fast ball that doesn’t even come close makes you think there wasn’t much of a two- strike adjustment being made there swing hard in case you hit it he didn’t hit it luis Renifo gets a chance to hit here the other way could be extra bases and it gets by him adele around third he’ll score easily and they hold the lead runner at second potential tying run now in scoring position no waiting around right there he was ready to swing it on the first pitch showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit now a huge at bat in this game coming up and now Christian Moore that one finds the zone strike one [Applause] so the tying run at second foul ball it stays nothing and two [Applause] and that just misses man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s with every swing he takes yanks and that’s him for a strike and it’s 0 and one not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way the one that one almost got him swing and a ball popped up needto brings it in and that ends the inning one two three go the Yankees they lead it 5-4 now pitching welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth in Hamilton these are the spots where Levers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations leading off of the shortstop Zack Netto [Music] gets the outside corner with that one that missed inside the count even one and one [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base line and that’s a base hit really nice job with two strike hitting in that at bat you can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone got him to chase on the two strike count but he wasn’t fooled he hit that ball really well no outs runner at first nolan Showwell the next to hit for the runner on the go pitch misses the throw tag and he’s out oh this is a real momentum killer after the leadoff single tried to steal second base on the first pitch defense was all over it nicely done from behind the plate with the catch and throw then a quick tag before he reaches the base check swing called strike ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit and that puts the tying run on base always feels amazing getting a job done when a team needs you to come through it’s just bigger than your own individual stats once you get the ball by the pitcher there’s a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground balls so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit one down here’s Trout 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out breaking ball to kicks away off his mid tying run moves up to second and that could be a big pass ball an unfortunate pass ball right there one he’s not going to be happy about behind the plate and with the runner advancing to second that double play is off the table right now so we’ll see if that comes back to bite him holding on to a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth line drive and it goes just foul [Music] so the tying run at second this one chopped on the ground but foul well if he’s going to do something special right here it’s going to have to happen with two strikes that’s outside it’s two and two [Applause] swings and misses struck him out and now it’s the Angels clean up that Jorge Solair jorge [Applause] and this is inside rudder at second two down ripped to third pza fires over to first and that is the inning so no runs on two hits no errors and one left home half left-handed hitter coming up to hit classic bullpen move right here so we’ll see how it works out well one game and here comes Bellinger known for his lead inning heroics bellinger you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher and what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head and the first offering a fast ball for a strike activity in the bullpen hector Nerys up and loosening in the pen brogden getting cranked up as well ball that’s out [Music] and there’s one down the batter number 11 shortstop Anthony so digging in Anthony Vulpi dead in his third season 25 years old a former first round pick in 2020 and that one just misses a ball and no strikes fouled off left side headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball one down base is empty that’s a ball that’s down and in really good take especially with two strikes lifted in the air right field solair gets under it he makes the catch and there’s two down up next for the Yankees next for New York Jason Dominguez 0 for three in this one and that’s in the dirt ball one that’s in there two down nobody on here the bottom half of the eighth inning high-fly ball out into left center field and that is that now pitching for back now and on the mound a closer Deon Williams not many pitchers have it but he’ll break down a screw ball from time to time here’s the catcher to hit logan O’Hy run on base but because of the power you want him to tie up the game with one swing here late on that fast ball one’s the count [Applause] highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side [Applause] swings through it and that’s a strike out well the first batter it’s always a big one for the closer you get that punch out you get settled in you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that you know you’re going to wrap this thing up adele in the box with one away as he takes ball one [Applause] and a swing and a miss there one and one [Applause] and it’s strike two it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he’s really late right now misses off the play two and two [Applause] and it’s fouled off he’ll do it again [Music] [Applause] one-run game here in the top of the ninth swing and a miss stop him out now only one out remaining this is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer come in and just destroy all hope first two batters two strikeouts see if he can strike out the side angels down to their final out and next for the Angels Lamont Wade Jr swing and a base hit so the tying run reaches with two away baldi’s been having a hard time just putting the ball in play in this one so that should help soften the blow solid swing from start to end on time with everything really good balance nice extension and he met it out front for the line drive knock two outs runner at first luis Rangifo the next to hit for the Angels and that’s off the inside edge and that’s ball one crowd locked in right now one-run game here in the ninth [Applause] swings through that one kelly just threw that fast ball by it elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity squirts away a little bit nice job behind the plate there the Angels down to their final strike up and in and the count is even two and two typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up and now the count is full and another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle christian Moore in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here ball four he locked in and that keeps things going pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpin arms are free passes especially in spots like this make the team earn their way off substitution now at first base here’s the Angels pinch runner scott Kangar digging in christian Moore down to their final out but an opportunity to deliver the tying and maybe even winning run strike one [Applause] lift it to left and this should do it he’s got it ball game the Yankees hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game that looked like the pitcher was getting into a little trouble there but quickly brought out a pitch that isn’t what most hitters are looking for with that great velocity but it was really good movement on the change up and a nice win today
