we’re going to discuss three undrafted free agents that the Cowboys signed earlier this off seasonason that we think have a chance to make the 53man roster but before we do that Landon we got to say the Cowboys have had a pretty good track record of undrafted free agent players making the team and not only just making the team but becoming highly successful yeah I mean it it seems to extend even well past the Will Mclair but the Cowboys have always been very good at identifying folks that slipped through the cracks and didn’t get drafted you know I think part of it is that they just have they’ve invested so much in that department that they get a lot of names you know they they end up producing very large boards uh and and they just they end up getting a lot of uh of faces that they you know get uh time in front of and they get to examine and it really kind of helps that when the draft’s over you know they once the sixth and seventh round rolls around they’re already on the phone with some of these folks that they expect are not going to get drafted and starting to to make money and and that’s one thing that you know you can say about Jerry Jones is that he’s never been afraid to throw around undrafted free agent money which you know ultimately can be you know a real big gambles i mean you can throw I mean it’s not a lot of money but you’ll throw a lot of it all over the place on on spots where guys you know probably won’t make the team so uh the Cowboys you know great depth at the scouting department their ability to kind of scour the entire country for a bunch of different names and then Jerry’s willingness to throw down the cash when it’s time to negotiate i think those two things really help the Cowboys get you know every single year a really strong undrafted free agent class uh and it’s and it’s Bowie the bottom part of their roster for a better part of a decade yeah and think about all the names that have been undrafted free agents that have had success here between Tony Romo uh Miles Austin Rico Dao last year Terrence Steel was an undrafted free agent playing at right tackle Maris Bell Wan I mean the names can go on and on and on so like of all the teams in the NFL the Cowboys are one of the franchises that has a lot of success we’re even talking even someone like Brevin Span Ford and Hunter Liby like not superstars but just solid players yeah i mean you know you don’t have to hit on all your fourth fifth and sixth round picks uh to kind of make the back end of your roster healthy if you consistently can pull two or three guys that are you know every year from the undrafted free agent class that maybe don’t contribute this year but you you get them into your system you have their rights for next year usually on very team friendly contracts and and then once you have them in your system for you know Brock Hoffman another name right just another guy that’s just has been sitting in the Cowboys system for a long time and then lo and behold an injury happens in his second or third year and suddenly he’s ready to be a starter and he didn’t even draft the guy so that’s the kind of long-term thinking investment that they make at the position is they understand hey a lot of these guys are still talented they just need to be in a professional system for a little while for them to kind of catch up with these draftable guys and then once they’re ready you know we don’t really care where you come from as long as you’re performing and and the Cowboys will do a good job of of giving those guys opportunities which again promotes their ability to get these guys out of uh out of the draft uh it’s a it’s a positive system for the Cowboys team building all right so let’s get to the names and probably the player that the fans are the most excited about is Trey Sean Holden a wide receiver from Oregon this is somebody who was a big time recruit coming out of high school a four-star recruit uh went to Alabama eventually transferred to Oregon uh and had a pretty good year under Junior Adams the Cowboys new wide receiver coach that’s probably why he’s in Dallas right now but what did you see from Holden when you watched this tape well when you watch Holden I mean you know I’ll say this i I think it’s a lot of average stuff right it’s a lot of He’s got average size and he’s got some good height right but he’s average in almost every other respect right he’s got very average athleticism um average body size and and whatever juice he has in his game uh it comes from his attitude and play style it feels like and I’ll say this like the more you watch him play the more he grows on you right because I do think that you know you watch him and you know before the catch nothing special at the at the catch point not really that special when he gets the ball in his hands he’s pretty good right he can break some tackles he can make things happen but again like the more you watch this guy especially as he operates versus zone coverage see him you know kind of running his his routes kind of violently right he’s he’s very frenetic in his route running he he likes to but he’s also smart like he also you see him kind of finding zones and then sitting between defenders and presenting himself to the quarterback right and knowing how to kind of manipulate those things he doesn’t quite have the athleticism that you would love to for a guy that would consistently separate versus man coverage early like that’s just not there but as a guy who can find an open space and and be a reliable receiver and plays with an attitude and plays with a level of physicality that when he’s on the field like he plays like you feel his presence a little bit uh I gotta admit like you know as I was watching him I kind of was like okay you know yeah he’s not exceptionally fast he’s not really big he’s not really you know a a high point guy necessarily but I just he just does a lot of things kind of well and he does it with a chip on his shoulder a little bit uh and so I just I I think again just kind of like what we talked about with these undrafted free agents I’m interested in getting a guy like this into the locker room and seeing kind of how he develops right could he be a and again maybe not off the field but a Sam Herd type you know like he’s he’s a physical kind of not not big guy but like he can come in here and give you some good blocking snaps and then also just be a threat like if the play breaks down to kind of get open and and present to a quarterback uh I liked him a lot as a potential long-term development guy even though like I said he doesn’t he’s not turpet he’s not you know these guys that’s got like four three speed that that’s the the physical trait you want to develop it’s more kind of subtle than that uh but I think he’s I think he could develop into a guy who could be a reliable receiver the NFL is littered with players like this the guys that run in the low four or sorry high fours low four sixes but they can block and they play hard and they’re phys i I think a good example of this would be like Noah Brown right noah Brown was a seventh round pick coming out of Ohio State was not fast was not dynamic necessarily after the catch but there was just something about his game physically where you saw it and it took it took Noah Brown three years in the NFL before before he became you know a guy that even was on the field on passing downs but look at Noah Brown now in the NFL he’s had a long career i’ll give you another example jaywan Jennings for the 49ers i think he ran 475 at the NFL combine but he was 6’2 210 lbs and blocks his butt off and now he’s become a really important part of the 49ers offense i’m not saying that Holden is going to get there but there are plenty of receivers that fit this profile in the league that have had long careers and it won’t surprise me if Holden’s another one yeah i mean I think literally just to kind of prove what you’re saying literally my notes say an acquired taste tough to see early on because his physical tools imply he will need to overcome a lot to make it in the NFL however as you watch him play more you realize he could be the one to beat the odds just because you know like I said his play demeanor his play style he seems to be smart just based on the way his he plays the game and smart tough guys who work hard those are the ones who overcome the odds and this sort of thing so or or you have incredible physical traits he’s the He’s the the former type not the latter but those guys make it all the time i don’t think he’s going to make the 53man roster this year but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a practice squad that ends up kind of fighting his way onto the roster at some point whether it’s this year next year clearly he’s got a sponsor in Junior Adams that loves him so we’ll see how things develop he he’ll take over the Jaylen Morano Raina Croper comment section of when we’re talking about him every single year for the next four years there you go uh all right let’s talk about a linebacker that the Cowboys signed this offseason if you can even call him a linebacker that’s pretty intriguing we’ll get to Justin Baron next this episode is brought to you by Game Time there’s nothing like the NBA playoffs the intensity the buzzer beaters the fans app today last minute tickets lowest price guaranteed welcome back to the Loton Cowboys podcast we’d like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day lady let’s discuss a linebacker the Cowboys signed this off season Justin Baron from Syracuse i hesitate to even call him a a linebacker because he just did a little bit of everything from Syracuse but what did you see from him on tape syracuse defense was really interesting this year wasn’t it like they kind of moving guys all around a little bit justin Baron was no exception right and and and he’s an interesting guy you kind of nailed it a lot where he’s a little bit of a tweener right like you’re not exactly sure you’re going to want to play him in that kind of overhang Sam linebacker spot like you know whether you want to call him a linebacker or a strong safety may just depend on exactly how many yards he stepped outside of the box right so uh yeah and you saw a lot of both he’s he is physically kind of a tweener right like I do think to me I would play him at linebacker and try to get his weight up a little bit because I do think that it’s much more likely that you’re going to get a uh slightly undersized you know but still quick linebacker as opposed to a athletic you know enough safety who’s frankly big enough to make a difference but I’ll tell you this much while you’re figuring out what he’s what he is as a defender I think you’re going to get a very good special teams player right you know he is a guy that has a really great flying 20 if you look at his Raz score it’s all kind of again sort of average even when you look at him as a linebacker that’s why you know even though he is uh kind of a tweener that he doesn’t quite have the athleticism you would expect for a 220 pound linebacker right like I mean he’s good but not great and I think that but I think his like flying 20 is good so that I think you know you can get him on kickoff teams punt punt coverage teams and he’ll be really really strong because he is a good tackler and he plays well in the box and I do think that you know despite not being overly big uh he operates well in tight spaces because he’s so short area quick you know and and and I I I don’t think he’s ever going to be a guy that you’re loving to kind of take on linebackers i I think he obviously I think he obviously I mean take on linemen uh I think he plays a little bit like overshown in the sense that you know that’s how he’s going to try to win versus defenders in in the box in space he’s he’s going to use his quickness in his eyes he’s not the athlete that oversh he’s actually closer to like Maris Bell when Maris Bell played linebacker of words like that i’ll give you a size here 6036 so just under 6’4 225 pounds he ran a 468 40 yard dash which is good it’s not amazing but 6983 cone that’s that’s the number right there like that is impressive change of direction he can just He can do a little bit of everything let me give you the the the the snap breakdown this is this is hilarious v PF 25 snaps at wide receiver 198 snaps on defensive line 140 or sorry 1400 in the box 628 snaps as a slot corner seven as a wide corner 388 snaps as a free safety 110 snaps on kick return 110 snaps on kick coverage 180 snaps on punt coverage 205 snaps on punt return and 193 on field goal and extra point like that’s he literally did it all for Syracuse you know it’s also really funny too just to kind of express to you y’all how much of a tweener this guy is he I mean just let’s look at this the height and weight again he’s 636 so he’s a very he’s a tall linebacker like like by any you know comparison in the NFL but he’s still only 225 pounds like he is a bean pole you look at him and he looks sort of like body style i mean I think Overshown again is is the I mean Bell is another guy like you know just one of these kind of bigger strong safety types that like you know is tall and rangy so I do think he’s going to be able to play a little bit of of everything he the the position that I feel like I saw him the most at was Sam linebacker yes and I and I do think it would be interesting to kind of see him play a little bit of that in the NFL because I I you know as we kind of trend back towards a little bit more of the run game or at least more run formations and kind of passing out of that i do think he’s you know fluid enough that I don’t want him playing at strong safety maybe full time but if you’ve got three linebackers on the field I I mean I certainly don’t mind him spot dropping or or or or you taking on a tight end you know in short area situations because he’s shown that he can do that he’s just he’s just an interesting athlete right now and I just don’t know that like he has a position immediately on the NFL in the NFL but I think for exactly what the Cowboys have got him in for where it’s an undrafted situation he’s not going to be forced onto the field immediately i do think he can come in and probably give you some special team snaps probably right away because he is so like long speed fast and has and can break down and and is a good tackler so uh I think he’s going to have value for this team if they need him you know pretty soon uh with the idea of maybe developing him into a kind of nifty looking you know kind of speed linebacker down the road yeah i mean I I thought he had really good ball skills and that’s one of the things that is so intriguing i mean he’s a former receiver so yeah we shouldn’t be surprised so as I’m watching him I was just envisioning him like dropping in a Tampa two defense where he’s just flying down the middle of the field and daring quarterbacks to try to throw the ball you know above his head again he’s 6’4 with awesome ball skills like that would be really fun to watch he honestly reminds me of a guy that the Cowboys signed as an undrafted free agent like four or five years ago remember Tyler Coyle who they signed from Purdue true they really liked him a lot like around the same time as Bell and all those guys that’s honestly probably the only reason he didn’t make it but he was another guy that they kind of moved all over the defense they played him at linebacker they played him at safety it didn’t end up working out but it did for Maris Bell so who knows with Justin Baron this is somebody that was a two-time team captain at Syracuse he racked up a bunch of tackles and I think that’s the thing that you always get nervous about with these guys that play a lot of different positions like can you tackle the fact that he has 90 plus tackles in back-to-back seasons says the answer is yes he did one of the he had one of those seasons where he had a broken hand still had a bunch of tackles i’m intrigued i don’t know if there’s a spot for him on the roster right now but I didn’t necessarily think that Maris Bell and Wany Thomas were going to make the roster as undrafted rookies either they did look if you’re going to be fast and be athletic and if you can tackle and if you’re you know somewhere between 6’2 and 6’4 and 215 and 230 pounds there’s there’s a spot for you in an NFL roster just on special teams right and you could work your way into the rest of it along the way i think you you watch his his tape uh and you see the skill set he has not just the athletic system but what he can actually do on the on the football field as a tackler and as a defender he’s instinctual he’s not he’s not completely ready to play NFL snaps as a defender yet but there’s something there and there’s and there’s enough there that the the special teams aspect of it uh rits large in his in his profile so yeah he’s got a way to make the team with special teams and he’s got enough of a skill set that he’s interesting to develop and don’t forget Matt Eberlu is one of the best coaches in the league at developing linebackers so if he thinks he has something don’t be surprised if maybe he makes the roster or he’s one of the highest guys in the practice squad uh he’s somebody Landon that I can’t wait to see like in the preseason because he’s just going to get a ton of run like he’s going to play the entire second half of these games player that I’m just very excited to watch that’s all yep just need snaps and and let’s see where he goes from there can’t wait to see all right let’s talk about the player that I think has the best chance of actually making the opening day roster that’s Elijah Clark we will get to him next welcome back to the Loton Cowboys podcast we’d like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day for your second listen check out the lockdown NFL scouting show as training camps get closer and moves are being made host Kyle Krabs and Joe Marino will make you the most informed NFL fan this off season find lot on NFL scouting on YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast all right Leen let’s talk about one more undrafted free agent it’s Elijah Clark from Syracuse shocker that the Cowboys signed multiple Syracuse guys you’re already starting to hear some whispers out of Cowboys camp that Elijah Clark kind of could be a dude what did you see from him on tape yeah I mean keeping in mind that we have continuously heard his name i mean we talk about drum beats all the time right this is one of the guys I mean certainly of the undrafted free agents that we have heard a drum beat about uh any any you know you kind of see on tape what you’ve heard a little bit of in training camp or I’m sorry in mini camp right is physical you know a corner guy that you can play inside um I think he is mostly kind of a nickel hybrid safety type guy um you saw a lot of that on this tape as well um definitely seems comfortable you know it seems like his game is most comfortable and he’s most comfortable when he’s able to play with vision and slow play the situation in front of him whether that’s you know back end at free safety or playing off coverage in the slot it’s it’s you know he’s not necessarily a lock him up explosive no uh uh uh you know man coverage uh nickel corner type however if you need a kind of versatile guy who can operate well in zone who can pick up a guy coming in who can play comfortably in the back end who won’t panic who’s got you know uh good footwork right and and speed uh to complement what is a very physical play style um I think that there’s there’s plenty of room for for guys in like that in the NFL um you know he’s he’s probably not someone that I’m going to feel comfortable ever playing on the outside he’s he’s not uh small by any stretch of the imagination though he is kind of under size arm lengthwise u but he’s you know he’s he’s over six feet he’s he’s 188 pounds is what I have him here on RA we’ll see what he comes in as which you know those are those are good size numbers for a nickel corn right like the six foot is you know about as high as tall for for a guy that’s playing a nickel slot spot spot consistently doesn’t have like great jump explosion numbers which is why I wouldn’t love him kind of especially in a silo based outside system boundary corner situation just because I don’t know how I mean six feet short arms and you can’t jump it’s going to be tough down the field when players get vertical on you but in a situation where he’s in a man-match system or he’s playing zone in as as a as a nickel guy coming off the edge as a blitzer playing free safety kind of playing any kind of hybrid of those situations he’s a guy that sees the sees the field well sees what’s happening in front of him uh I think is a a smart football player just based on the way that he kind of pattern reads things and comes downhill quickly you know there’s some athleticism limitations like if he’s coming downhill hard and the play breaks horizontal he could struggle to kind of gear down and flip his hips to get outside to kind of pursue well but I think as far as a guy you know again like we’re looking at this in the context of the defense that they’re playing and and and Flu is going to be playing a bunch of zone coverage stuff he’s going to be sending his his nickel as a blitzer he’s going to want somebody who’s a physical enforcer in that spot i think Elijah Clark can play that very very well and I think he fits what they’re looking for in the nickel uh extremely well quick breakdown of his snaps 609 career snaps in the box 600 as a slot corner 613 as a free safety played on the defensive line he reminds me I’m going to give you another safety that played a bunch of spots in college he reminds me a lot of Xavier Woods coming out of Ltech where if you remember watching Xavier Woods’s tape back in 2016 he played in the slot he played as a free safety he played as a linebacker he fell to the sixth round because he just wasn’t overly big or overly athletic and Xavier Woods is still in the NFL today because he could just do a little bit of everything at a pretty decent level and there’s just not a lot of players like that in the league so Elijah Clark already getting reps with the the first string now a little bit of that could be because of some injuries to Donovan Wilson and Malik Cooker but the fact that he’s already risen up the depth chart this much shows you that the Cowboys like him quite a bit yeah he’s risen up this the depth chart because he’s risen up the depth chart uh he’s done a really good job of uh of of you know just kind of being an enticing player at a position that the Cowboys have needs at right like uh and and I think probably a big portion of why he came here he he saw the depth chart and saw that there wasn’t like an assigned necessarily written in pen slot player and that’s kind of where he fits a little bit so obviously the Cowboys are you know not likely to start an undrafted free agent as the nickel corner but that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t make the team or wouldn’t play potentially a part as a rotation if if he has a good training camp um you know we’ve also seen obviously guys like Deron Bland uh playing the nickel and I think that’s where they’re gonna end up heading as especially as guys continue to get healthy but you’re going to need a several of these guys i think that’s why they’re working Muamo Mwamu here uh and I think that you’ll see guys like Clark and Mwamu kind of occupy this space where they’re playing nickel they’re playing safety they’re kind of being fitting in where they need to than playing a bunch of special teams and so the fact that Elijah Clark is kind of doing that as a rookie potentially uh you know alongside a guy that they just resigned to a contract in inquamu bodess well for where his trajectory is in his NFL career yeah real quick he had a 6793 cone which is absolutely insane for a defensive back of that size so the 40 and you know that stuff is average but his ability to change direction and you see it on tape like that’s what makes him such a unique and special player that is it for today’s show we’d like to thank you for making Lon Cowboys your first listen every single day check out the channel uh the YouTube channel download the podcast wherever I’m more excited for Barron , Elijah Woods, Childress
'undrafted gems'…. June in Dallas
we dont have success with UDFA receivers, just the opposite. and yet every season, there's a new pet UDFA wideout
Unless the starting 4 Wr’s have injury’s this is a waste of content.
Clickbait
Gamble? Jerry buying up businesses for millions of dollars, gamble maybe the wrong for Billionaire Jerry Jones. He’s paying pennies on the dollar for these free agents
Hyped for A.Clark, Barron, Holden
Justin Barron wearing #55.
Holden 6'2 205lbs and he can block
Tolbert has never been a good blocker that's why Mingo, Flournoy, Holden r gonna keep pushing Tolbert down… and there's a chance Tolbert doesn't make the team he gets cut/waved maybe the practice squad
Typical offseason bullcrap content
Make Barron a big safety!! Covering TE!!
Can Clark play corner!!
