so almost ready to get underway and on the hill today JP Sears but Chris he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound well I’ll say this every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans in front of the city and you know this guy no different he wants to be more effective here so you look at the numbers they haven’t been great at home i’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one all right ready to get underway and now the shorts stop Jeremy Pñena and that one fouled off yeah that’s fouled off and he deals swwaying and a ball popped up and it drops in so a man on base to start the inning i’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count too good of a pitch to hit right there you have to expand the zone keep that leadoff man off first base isach Paradis getting ready to hit Sears keeping him close and that one is lifted in the air rooker brings it in and there’s one away batting third left fielder Jose Altu now we check out the Astros lineup a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus jeremy Pñena you know Boo he really makes the most out of his skill sets leading the team in steals and on base percentage and you know you got sometimes a guy that can run really well but he doesn’t get on base enough to utilize that potential as soon as this guy gets on first he’s thinking about second and then third he’s got the wheels to make that kind of stuff happen and really disrupt the ball game i love watching guys like him who just make stuff happen in the lineup that one kicks away from the catcher and now a man into scoring position well that right there erases the chance at the inning ending double play so good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way pñena the runner at second with one away here’s the pitch runner on the move back in for a strike throw to third safe and a go-ahead run is now only 90 ft away [Music] and he grounds one to the right side and it goes just fouled that one back up the middle and it gets through the run comes across and the Astros score first it’s one- nothing really nice job of two strike hit in that at bat ding on the swing was good able to shoot the ball up the middle didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have like but that’s a good approach paying off one down yiner Diaz the next to hit [Applause] that one finds the corner going one [Applause] swing and a foul out of play [Applause] foul ball still 0 and two man at first one away that one is inside look out see if he can go upstairs a little bit make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one two don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt popped up foul territory behind the plate and there are two outs batting fifth first baseman Christian Walker and now it’s Christian Walker one of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first he is that good with the glove you’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman and that one is downstairs and that’s ball one first baseman are involved in just about every single play so when you have somebody so solid over there uh you can breathe a little easier and that drops in for a strike the other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times and he just handles them so well slings it across and that is that back here with my pal Singi and today’s starting pitcher Sha Duben well this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything doing any type of damage the only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run but outside of that it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today lawrence Butler leading things off and takes a strike you’re not just talking about the ability to pick Chris one of the things about him the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole and that is out of play remember Mark Kse was a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed the one two and that skips in the dirt yeah and I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true swings and misses struck him out batting second now the number two hitter Rick Rooker rooker [Applause] fast call for a strike and one one out base is empty now one in [Applause] and the sweeper misses for a ball [Applause] fouls one off two and two fouls that off to the left and will do it again swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt gets to it onto first in time for the second out good job to clean it up after the drop third strike no anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot it’s a two or three run homer delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 two out base is empty fights that one away still one and two [Music] got him strikes out the side to begin the game what a start a’s go quickly and quietly there and it remains one- nothing and welcome back to the ballpark new inning getting started and now it’s going to be Jake Meyers sears back to work and that one clips the corner [Applause] in the air left field down the line and that’s a fair ball around first heading for two and he’s got a leadoff double hooked around that pitch on the outside but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely and that takes quick strong wrist to pull that off runner in scoring position no outs vic Keratini at the plate a switch hitter batting right and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike it’s 0 and one [Music] man at second swinging a foul back and that’s out of play stays alive runner in scoring position nobody out here in the top of the second swing and a ball popped up fair ball runner from second crosses the plate and they lead by two and he’s into second with nobody out well that right there is a pretty clear example of why making a clean ontarget throw back into the infield is so critical but so many times it’s easily overlooked you can’t be careless about it as an outfielder doesn’t matter if you’re throwing to a base or a cut off you have to give them something that they can handle that cost him a run as a result now it’s going to be Cam Smith outside low ball one [Applause] [Music] just off the inside edge one of our favorites Jerry Hillsdale umpiring behind home plate in this one pretty much by the book with his strike zone and because he’s so by the book you’ll sometimes see pitchers questioning him they’ll make a good pitch on the edge of the zone want the strike and not get the call but most of the time Jerry gets it right he’s a good one no outs runner on second swing and a miss he really sells the change with that arm action and it remains two and two and the sweeper is off the plate [Applause] in the air center field brown makes the catch one down batting ninth second baseman Brendan Rogers now it’s Brendan Rogers [Applause] upstairs that missed ball one one and0 and another ball runner at second here one gone [Applause] oh [Applause] that’s in for a strike clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count it was a cookie right down the middle [Applause] the other way and it stays fair rounds third headed for the plate he’ll score easily he was all over that one nice job going the opposite way with it letting the ball travel and not allowing the barrel to hook around the ball it’s so frustrating when you see a good pitch and your hands roll over it was on the outside part of the plate and he approached it perfectly back to the top of the lineup so next up for Houston it’s the Astros three and the A’s nothing and we’re back so here’s Brown at the plate athletics center fielder Seth Brown swinging a foul straight back and that’s through there for a strike and it’s 0 and two missed inside with the curve Herb one and two right side Walker he’ll do it himself one up one down batting fifth third baseman Maxy next up for the A’s Max funky and that’s a little bit high and that’s ball one popped foul out of play off to the right that one inside and the count two and one and it’s fouled away instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in that’s the ball you got a full count fouled off again and it remains three and two in the air out towards right center smith on the move to the gap makes the grab for the second out batting six left fielder two down base is empty jj Blade up next for the A’s he swings and fouls one off right through there for a strike looks like a really good fast ball today you can hear that catcher mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one two outs caught on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning nothing doing there for the A’s they trail it here 3 nothing onto the third inning now here’s the Astros designated hitter Yiner Diaz diaz starting as the designated hitter batting in the cleanup spot and he was born in the Dominican Republic and another ball two next offering is in for a strike and misses inside [Music] foul ball swang and a miss struck him out and there’s one down thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger christian Walker up next for the Astros 0 for one he grounded out in his first at bat fast ball in for a strike it’s 0 and one swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher macgyver pulls that one down and there are two down now batting the center fielder Jake Meyers two outs base is empty jake Meyers digs in now a double and a run scored his first time up that one’s upstairs ball one this is important if he can go one two three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team popped up Urias and makes the play and that’s out number three astros are down quietly but they’re on top by a count of three to nothing ready to go for the last half of the now luis Rio he’s got which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field but he can jump you if you make a mistake and there’s a curve through for a strike there it was oh here it is hit it he gets a take gets ahead in a count ball high on the ground to third paradus over to first leadoff man retired here in the third betting eight catcher Willie MacGyver and now here’s the A’s catcher Willie Macyver and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike if I’m at the dish right now I am aggressive over the heart of the plate this guy’s been filling up the strike zone so you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit and as nasty as his stuff is you might as well take all three swings one down base is empty one two foul ball still a one and two count here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field so they get a man aboard with a one out single still able to come through behind in the count right there anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there [Applause] max Schumer stands in now and watches strike one sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit they fired in quickly so it’s first and second with only one away two consecutive base hits for these guys here i know that was a ground ball but it was absolutely hammered through the infield that’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder you know they used to say “Charge it.” Crazy the batter now Lawrence Butler just missed in for a strike and the count is one and one [Applause] foul ball there runners at first and second with one gone here in the last half of the third not close with that one and the count’s even at two and that just misses full count out towards right center field smith he makes the catch and there’s two down now batting right fielder Brent Rooker at the plate brent Rooker [Applause] baby let’s go 10 in the dirt but kept close no movement on the base it’s ball one two aboard two outs and a foul ball two on two outs that one fouled off go Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes he picks up his fifth strikeout on the hill two left on three innings complete it’s the Astros three and the A’s nothing out of the fourth and stepping in for the Astros Victor Keratini and the first offering a fast ball for a strike 01 to go baby let’s go that one the other way hauls it in one away now batting number 11 cam Smith up next for the Astros fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one fly ball down the line and that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second to second pulls him off the bag now batting second baseman Brendan Rogers one out runner at second and next to hit for Houston Brendan Rogers and that’s off the inside edge one and only one ball no strikes swing and a ground ball base hit right field stop sign goes up at third runners at the corners with one out wasting no time he’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle seriously we’re starting with this already manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen jp Sears is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base back with a new pitcher after this now pitching tyler Ferguson gets handed the rock out of the pen and one thing on him he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park not an easy guy to take deep jeremy Pñena up next for the Astros he’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors ball one there breaks his bat pops it up two away up next for the Astros third baseman Isach Paredus and now here is Isach Paredus [Music] just missed a bit behind with that swing it’s strike one well there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end runners on first and third two away top half of inning number four struck him out swinging couldn’t catch up to the heater a couple of hits in the inning but they can’t get him home we’re midway in the fourth it’s the Astros three and the A’s nothing ready to go bottom four and here’s the first base Tyler Sod sodro swing and a miss as he was out front that time you know these athletics just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone you can’t do much of anything with those locations and that’s been true again today ripped to third and picked on a hop tosses to first one out in the bottom of the fourth and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand one down base is empty on the ground right side rogers to first already two gone here in the home fourth now batting third baseman Maxy manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen sha Duben gives way and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today gave him some length back with a new arm after this now pitching for Houston and we’ve got ourselves a pitching change ryan Gusto into the game with the bases empty two down base is empty maxy up next for the A’s he’s 0 for one baby let’s go hit hard on the ground to short whips it to first three up three down inning over a’s go quickly and quietly there still down three nothing and welcome back to the ballpark all set for the start of the inning here’s the left fielder Jose Altuve tyler Ferguson back to work that misses the zone and that’s ball one well these Astros doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side the numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning and they’ve only struck out twice so they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball [Music] [Applause] the 2-2 misses just off the outside edge i think that was a strike caught a break right there pretty good pitch on the outside corner that one 95 to finish him off nice job right there he struck him out twice the pitch before looked like it was strike three doesn’t get the call bears down throws another quality pitch for the strikeout diaz in the box now no balls in a strike looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located very top of the strike zone middle away that missed that’s a ball 2-1 swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field nabs it two up two down now batting the first baseman Christian Walker two outs base is empty christian Walker up next for the Astros bowl for two in this one popped up foul territory behind a plate macgyver settles under it and makes the catch and that is that nothing across here this half home half of the fifth coming up it’s the Astros three and the A’s nothing and we’re back john Shia with my buddy Chris Singleton it’s set to get us started bottom five jj Bet let’s go bring them home that one finds the zone going to one you know these A’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we’ve seen it quite a bit today it’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group going to count one and two and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game that missed inside the countdown two and two [Applause] just misses the mark outside the zone struck him out looking that was pretty nasty well he froze him with a great fast ball right on the corner it’s kind of rolling when you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin well he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike here’s Luis Oas first time up he grounded to third fall off foul how about this one Boog in 2023 Aras hit grand slams for Boston in back-to- back plate appearances they happened on different days but he still became the first Red Sox player to do it since Jimmy Fox in 1940 and that one hit to first tosses to the pitcher covering the bag old man for the fifth inning moving along two quick outs for the A’s catcher Willie Macyver two down base is empty willie Macyver up next for the A’s one for one with a single so far first pitch misses two down nobody on last half of inning number five and another ball two balls no strikes [Applause] ball and now three and one pitching has been pretty dominant in this one but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead they could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful on the ground of first he steps on the bag and it’s a one two three inning so they go quietly there we’re through five it’s the Astros three and the A’s nothing top of the sixth inning and stepping in for the Astros Jake Meyers that one misses ball one ferguson measures 6’4 in he features a fourseam fast ball a slider and occasionally uses a cutter here’s a 1-1 liner and this could be trouble now he’ll turn for second and he’s got his second double of the game two hits for him in this one both for extra bases got to feel good about that nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know hitters they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly runner in scoring position no outs keratini will hit next and the first pitch misses for ball one one and0 meyers stands at second with no outs [Music] two balls no strikes to count go baby let’s go [Applause] this one smoked could be trouble coming home he’ll score the throw into second and in at second with an RBI double well done drives in the run got a fast ball middle of the plate jumped all over it absolutely smoked that ball so next up for Houston Cam Smith one for two and first offering is fouled off one on nobody out a run in and we’re the top half of the six check swing called strike and that’s strike two [Applause] and a breaking ball misses outside [Applause] that one not close two and two and that’s outside [Applause] foul we’ll see another payoff pitch [Applause] line drive out towards left field that’s a base hit and they get it in quickly first and third now with nobody out now batting Brendan Rogers up next for the Astros tap foul at the plate out front rip foul swings through it and that’s a strike out typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone a hitter he’s prepared for it can get to it but that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to and that’s why you see the swing and miss in now takes ball one off the plate first and third one down here goes the runner on the ground to short schuman throws across the diamond and there’s two away up next for the Astros third baseman Isach Paredus isach Paredus up next for the Astros 0 for three in this one [Applause] that’s to third zips it to first they limit the damage here they get two runs on three hits no errors and one left 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth it’s the Astros five and the A’s nothing well we go bottom six max Schum that one misses and that is ball one in there at base is empty next up for the A’s Brent Rooker that one is absolutely belted that’s back there forget it so he goes the opposite way with that one he’s up to three home runs in the series and they’re on the scoreboard it’s 51 his bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park [Applause] so two down Tyler Soderstroke now at the plate check swing but he went too far and it’s one strike [Applause] fouled off left side [Applause] swing and a pop off in foul ground keratini brings it in for the third out but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast it’s now a 51 ball game pitching for the Welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound Mitch Spence well he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him here’s the former MVP Jose Altu builder Jose Altuve check swing no appeal [Music] in the air pretty deep out to center field and there’s one down [Applause] now at the plate Yiner Diaz and first offering is fouled off baby let’s go swing and a miss he was late strike two the A’s bullpen has some movement number 49 the hard throwing righty is up and loosening lopez a left-hander also throwing base is empty one away here in the top half of inning number seven got him looking that’s out number two oh that curve ball had some pretty good break to it as you can see the hitter just locked up a little bit thought it was a great pitch to hit but sometimes you’re looking for something else and you can’t pull the trigger yeah that’s fouled off two down to hard ground ball couldn’t have timed it up any better than that couldn’t get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it so a man at first and next to hit for Houston Jake Meyers and that one upstairs ball one 10 [Music] and that’s in there for a strike and now it’s even in the dirt did an excellent job keeping it right there and that one is inside walker leads off first with two down to the inning [Music] 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch foul ball and it remains a full cow that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going ground ball left side whips it across and that is the inning no runs one hit no errors and a man left midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch it’s the Astros five and the A’s won [Music] and welcome back to the ballpark digging in Seth Brown seth Brown and first offering is fouled off his eyes got big he saw that change up way out in front better to pull it than to get jammed on something off speed like that and that’s in for a strike and it’s nothing in two in there got him looking and that one split the plate i can’t argue with that one and clearly he was looking for something else anything but the breaking ball it’s a great pitch to hit right there if you’re looking for it and kind of a gift in a two-strike count but sometimes you just get fooled and you got to tip your cap and it’s fouled away the Astros leading by four here in the bottom of the seventh swinging a miss and it’s 0 and two 02 just off the outside part of the plate well that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch fouls it off still one and two in the air left field altuve should have this one makes the grab and there’s two gone now betting left fielder two down base is empty this is JJ Beday who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts to the right side a sliding stop and that’s a great play for the out and one two three go the A’s they’re down 5-1 now pitching new pitcher now number 49 he pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again and here’s the catcher Victor Keratini victor Keratini first pitch doesn’t find the zone and that one pulled foul next pitch in for a strike one and two one two battling here as he fouls it away [Applause] and a ball even a count well this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat i’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter foul ball left side he’ll see another well he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact liner caught second well baseball can be cruel can’t it i mean sometimes it gives and sometimes it takes away he did everything right on that swing but he’s got nothing to show for it now it’s the right fielder Cam Smith let’s go baby that’s in there strike one the Athletics have some bullpen action shawn Nukem the left-hander up and throwing one down base is empty well that’s really the money spot down and away if you can locate that consistently it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up that’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen field two and one two strikes and a foul ball he stays alive and that’s in the dirt still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound he’s already thrown 13 pitches they got him working hard out there he caught it behind his back and very nicely done for the out now batting second baseman Brendan Rogers [Applause] and stepping in for the Astros Brendan Rogers struck out on just three pitches last time and that’s off the outside edge ball one two down nobody on and we’re in the top of the eighth at 96 that pitch is in for a strike one and one there’s the swing and a miss well that’s that slope right there it extremely well talk about just a ton of break so tough to get that barrel to it swing and a ball lifted left field makes the catch and go over now pitching for back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth hunter Brown hasn’t pitched in the last three days here’s the second base Luis he’s grounded out a couple of times luis the Athletics in striking distance but have some work to do boog it starts with the laid off man i need a good at bat out of him right here that catches the corner brown is what you’re looking for in a good reliever the ball stays in the ballpark it’s so hard to square him up next offering is fouled back yeah he stays out of the middle and in and pitches either at the bottom at the top on the edges and because of that if you do get it in the air it’s usually just a highf fly ball and when it’s down in the zone it’s on the ground a one-two bows it back with two strikes fights that one away still one and two he’s so consistent that the manager basically could look at it like he’s got three outs sitting in his pocket that shortens the game swing and a miss struck him out and one out now oh that was a really good job setting him up right there pitcher and catcher working together to finish him off the fast and even though the location probably wasn’t what he wanted the sequence is what got the job done clearly they with the swing after seeing the off speed stuff on the pitch before macgyver in the box again takes the strike action in the pen down there caleb Ort up and throwing when he takes the mound you feel like hey this inning is wrapped or this ball game is over he’s just that good and you can see it in opposing hitters as well they know when he comes in pretty much forget about it kind of reminds me of Mariano Rivera that one down the line and that’s just foul the O2 ball let’s go three to go baby let’s go strike three and that’s two in a row got a little bit of a questionable call on that fast ball right there it appeared to miss off the outside just a little bit going to the electronic strike zone but that’s the type of location where you kind next JJ Bade part of what makes Hater’s fast so unique is that he gets carry on the fast ball up in the zone and yet he grips it like a sinker so technically his fastball is labeled as a sinker [Applause] and haters been one of the best strikeout pitchers in all of baseball [Applause] base is empty one away we’re in the last half of the ninth inning [Applause] and they’ll do it again outside lifted to left and that should do it and that is the ball game well this was a tightly played game got a little of everything some timely hitting runs on the board key pitching and defense in
