So the Chiefs did something the NFL is NOT ready for…

our free agent starter at quarterback got burnt by a seventh round rookie just the way Rashi Rice looks i think we were unsure coming into the off seasonason would he look the same and he has i think the most important player in the whole draft right now is Norman Lock it’s almost like a room with no names but a hidden secret hidden gem in Kansas City these were two of the best pass rushing defensive linemen in college football what do you think about a long-term deal with Trey Smith are you confident that something gets done i do get the sense from both sides of this thing that they want to so in today’s video I have a conversation with Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride a guy who’s been covering the Chiefs for over 11 years and in this insightful conversation he gets into what he’s seen so far at OTAAS as he’s been around the building well he believes there’s an underrated aspect about the Chiefs that’s being overlooked by many so we got to dive into that as we talk about both sides of the ball and much more but first how about those well Pete thanks so much for for joining for this special interview to talk OTAA’s state of the roster before mandatory camp which is tomorrow i had Ron Cop Jr of Arrowhead Pride on the podcast during training camp last year so it was really cool to have him on i appreciate all the work you guys are doing how has things been looking for you state of the roster you’ve had a few media looks now as we head into mandatory mini camp if we can start offense if you want and just anything in particular that’s standing out to you whether it’s O line skilled position players things you’re looking for right now well I think just generally generally speaking on voluntary OTAAS this is part of the NFL now where I think a lot of veterans feel more comfortable skipping and it seems like there’s a lot more forgiveness leaguewide if if veterans try to do that and I know you mentioned offense but just general participation has been really good andy Reed has kind of raved about that even Chris Jones who famously like hates working out in the sun in OTAAS he was there for all three of our media looks doesn’t mean he was there all 10 days we only get to three days so we get day three day six and day nine and aside from there was some injury there was some sickness but for the most part veterans included you most of these guys have been there two names of course stand out and that weren’t there in the media looks in Travis Kelce and Trey Smith but we I think at this point understand Kelsey probably doesn’t need voluntary OTAAS he’s only been in one offense his entire career sure I’m sure there are some new wrinkles that he’ll have to catch up with but that’s fine and he’s a a global celebrity at this stage and then Trey Smith it’s understandable right this is a player that really wants to sign a long-term contract why risk injury that can happen in in any practice when you’re seeking that i I think it will be intriguing to see if Trey Smith is at mandatory mini camp there are fines that come with that but he’s due to make $23 million so he could easily skip that as well if he wants right because that become that makes $104,000 a drop in the bucket uh I think it’s been good to see some of the younger players working it’s been good to see Rishi Rice i think if there’s one thing that really stands out on offense right now I guess I could break it down into two things josh Simmons being way ahead of schedule that is a really good thing and then just the way Rashi Rice looks i think we were unsure coming into the offseason would he look the same and he has patrick Mahomes raved about that and Rice from my look does look the same not that they Patrick Mahomes is going to lie to us for any reason but you you do want to see it with your own eyes and so we we’ve gotten that opportunity and it’s just been very impressive and we we know how we did at the beginning of last year such a a bad break for Kansas City to lose them in such a weird situation and then I mentioned the attendance attendance has been near perfect on the defensive side you know a couple players have been banged up and and they’ve had to sit out because of that but you get to practice and all the linebackers are there all the defensive backs are there all the defensive linemen you know that’s a really good thing because I I think especially from like a pass rush juice standpoint I felt like last year was a little bit lacking and so maybe that’s been stressed and and these guys seem to be all hands on deck so I think that’s been really cool i’ll actually keep it on defense and then go back to a couple questions on offense since we were just there talk about the pass rush how do you feel about the state of the secondary the addition of Christian Fulton you drafted Null Williams Chiefs drafted Null Williams in the third round and then how that could potentially more sticky coverage even help that pass rush that they also added to the Dline in the draft too with Gelotti and Norman L i like the defensive picks right this was a defensive draft i think it was four to three defense to offense i think when you look at the defensive line picks Norman L inside and the national Gelotti on the outside I mean it’s a very clear theme these were two of the best pass rushing defensive linemen in college football and I think the Chiefs recognized what we all saw like Chris Jones is getting a little older uh you know maybe there’s some attention elsewhere you wonder if if it’s to the point where that you’ll get more attention on George Carlos regardless whoever is getting double team you know whatever you want to say you needed more and I like Mike Dana a lot i you know I think Felix sometimes gets judged a little unfairly just because he hasn’t had the amount of playing time and so we you know I think there is a a theory that I had that we still don’t really know about Felix but regardless of all that like you needed more i mean this is a defensive coordinator in C Spagnolo who really likes to rotate these guys and it felt a little thin and so they went and took these guys i think it was like four picks apart and like I said the pass rush numbers are insane right like the pressures that Chelotti had the pass rush rate i know Norm didn’t play a ton and that’s been a ding for him and and so I think that’s good you mentioned Noah Williams uh I think Williams and Naggie will sometimes put it this way on the other side but like he’s drinking out of a thyro when it comes to Spagnolo and the defense but that’s okay now because you were able to bring in Christian Fulton who has that veteran experience i like No Williams he led the college football in interceptions and I’ve mentioned this a few times in some of my offseason stuff jaden Hicks with like 400 500 less snaps led the team in interceptions and I know it’s a polarizing name to bring up but I think every team should have a Marcus Peters a ball hawk that like really can change the game and I think the Chiefs now have two of those guys in Jaden Hicks and Null Williams as he develops and maybe could play more maybe you’re looking at more so week eight week nine that type of thing and I I don’t know i I think the Chiefs really had some clear needs in the draft and and the last defensive player would be Jeff Bassa and I think he’ll be brought along slower but they really like the value there i think it was the fifth round that they got him in if I’m remembering correctly and so he’s he’s more of a developmental player uh but they really like as uh Steve Spagnol will say we really like him from the neck up like in his uh you know northeast accent and you know I wonder what he could be middle to the end of the season so I I think it’s a good crop you always have to see uh how these guys are going to perform i think the most important player you know maybe in the whole draft like we’ll see if Josh Simmons starts but like right now is Norman Lock because there’s just such a need for defensive tackle snaps to be eaten up and I think he has right we’ll get to offense and then it’s going to be Simmons battling more but more could win that job and so who’s going to have the most snaps as a rookie like right now to me looks like Norman L cuz he has to and I you know the Chiefs rarely put themselves in that situation but I think that is what makes his situation probably the most interesting maybe of the entire class you might have asked this question to Spags during his presser last week but somebody said “Hey out of all these rookies who do you think’s gonna who do you foresee potentially getting the most playing time?” And he said Norman L i’m pretty sure it was Spags it was either him or Colen yeah that was something that I talked to Spags about you know and I I kind of framed it as well ideally Norman L is going to be able to and he’s always cautious he goes “Yeah Pete that’s the hope you know like and it’s like I think a lot of people in Kansas City are hoping that that he he can translate.” It’s very interesting because like I said I think he has the most clear path to playing time and the storyline surrounding him was a lack of playing time in college so like you talk about a a theme that always comes up is like rookie walls i mean that could be a concern right if you’re trying to cover the whole thing with with a lack of bias but I think that the Chiefs really like this player you know I think Charles Amenu being back fully healthy could take some of that pressure off that situation as well and so I like what they’ve done and I you know these players have to pan out you never know until they play there’s great picks and there’s busts in every single draft but you know you would think like theory would tell you that and and hopefully for Chiefs fans it’s both but in theory either Ashton Gelotti or Norman L is going to be a hit and I I think I think that’s a very good thing because you need you need that pass rush juice yeah heck yeah and just what you said too Caroff is he’s I feel like going to start just getting more attention he’s less underrated in my opinion now he was a little bit more under the radar just because of who else you had on the team and obviously Chris Jones in the middle so if he’s demanding a little bit more attention and like let’s say they you know they are overwhelmed and Chris Jones looks great i mean he’s working out now with the team obviously he’s going to be in good shape when when you get to training camp and you know let’s say you do have attention that’s going to Caroftus and Jones and and but then you have a minu and let’s say Ashen Gelotti is is able to translate like he he apparently is like another George Carlos clone i mean I think you’re setting yourself up for a really overwhelming pass rush it’s just a lot of unknown names at this point like like you said like Carloftus is finally starting to get a little attention i think even to an extent from a national standpoint I think you would have casual fans across the NFL and be like “Who caroftus?” Like I I still don’t think but I it’s almost like a room with no names but it’s almost almost like a hidden secret hidden gem in Kansas City that I think this line could be really disruptive and and good if everything pans out like like anything in the NFL has to pan out but I I like the maneuvering that Kansas City has done to put itself in in this position especially with we’ll move on from the Dline here but just especially with how several of those guys can play inside or outside you could do that with a minughue dana can do it a little bit obviously Chris Jones will line up on some downs and just pick who is he wants to line up against that’s been like the Spolo Cullen theory it’s like we want almost the defensive line to be positionless like any guy can kind of play inside any guy can kind of play outside uh and I I think that lends to the disguises and the different things that Steve Spaggnel likes to do like load up the line and then drop three of these guys back and just confusion and you offensive lineman being sort of caught off guard by the all different types of looks that Spagnolo can offer and I think that like positionless defensive line really plays into that and before we switch sides of the ball to talk offense with some awesome takeaways in there for sure if you are enjoying Pete Sweeny’s analysis and want exclusive access to his hour-long weekly podcast with co-host John Dixon the executive editor of Arrowhead Pride and up to three exclusive newsletters a week filled with deep content about the team you’re going to want to sign up to Arrowhead Pride Premiere pete is on the ground seeing practices live and is behind the scenes in the building with other credentialed media members so this is where he gives more subjective thoughts around the team and provides even more value than what you get from their website which is still absolutely fantastic the more the marrier which we’re trying to develop a little bit of a a community and everything is kind of leaning into subscription based whether we like it or not and so uh yeah I invite you to to come join and and and see what it’s like you can sign up monthly or annually which is the best value and the link to join is in the description and pin comment down below and then make sure you are following Pete on Twitter/X because every media look for OTAAS mini camp and training camp he gives a thread of his observations and they are one of the highlights of the day for sure one thing that caught my eye actually from your thread and this will kind of throw us back to the offensive side of the ball brashard Smith caught a deep pass for a touchdown a lot of the beat reporters mentioned it but I didn’t fully understand the context of how that play kind of went down with Christian Fulton on him in coverage one-on-one so that was one thing that really caught my eye i know he’s a seventh round rookie the running back room is going to be very competitive but he’s one of the maybe one of the best passcatching backs in this draft class seventh round or not what are your thoughts on Bashard Smith and maybe the state of the running back room right now he kind of projects as like a wide receiver running back hybrid right he’s had experience with both uh this was a particular play where Andy Reid just sent him out wide and it was just a one-on-one go situation and uh he got Christian Fulton by by three steps and I these practices are always fickle because you could look at it one way it’s like wow Rashard Smith is such a weapon and in the other sense it’s like our free agent starter at quarterback got burnt by a seventh round rookie right and that’s just that’s this time of year i mean the Chiefs are playing the Chiefs so that’s going to be the case but look the kid runs a 4-3940 he is able to catch passes like this i think in year one he you know smaller size this is the NFL i don’t think he’s going to be vying for those in between the trenches isaiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt burst through type of snaps but I I think he’ll have a role as a returner he’ll have a role in some of these looks that maybe you would see from Nicole Hardman who’s a member of the Green Bay Packers now and it might be one of these sneaky weapons that that you really get excited about the running back room is really interesting you know I think Pacheco has a place on this team i think Kareem Hunt is now going to have a full off season you would think even as he gets older he should be solid they’ve taken a flyer on Elijah Mitchell and compared him to potentially what Jerick McKinnon can offer and then people forget but you have Corson Steel in that mix who plays special teams and can block as a lead blocker and so I think that’s sneakily a tough room to figure out especially on the back end cuz you would think well yeah PCO Hunt and Smith for the draft pick are going to be on this team but how does that fit if you’re keeping seven receivers cuz Rashid Rice is suspended if you decide to keep three tight ends uh I don’t expect Jerard Wy to be ready for the beginning of the season but that’ll eventually be four tight ends it’s like are you really keeping five running backs you also want to have offensive linemen uh because we’ve seen off offensive line injuries not just with the Chiefs but throughout the NFL over the years so uh this is the beginning of like the 53man roster puzzle and I think running backs is very intriguing you know I think there is uh something to be said about that that back end in the room like what if everybody looks good what do the Chiefs do do they have to like flip flip somebody like they did uh with the Houston Texans years ago where they signed a running back and they end up flipping him carlos Hyde was the name and yeah I mean that that could be the case as well i’m definitely rooting for the running back room i think with all the problems that happened last year a bunch of that was injuries and then just left tackle stuff it was one of the least explosive running games in the NFL and it’s not like the Chiefs are at least since maybe rookie Kareem Hunt are known for super explosive run game but just having Pacheco back and healthy further removed from the ankle kareem with a full off seasonason under his belt i mean I I am more hopeful this year for that running back room just to help the offense in its own way so in theory right like if you’re too packed you can flip one of these guys and maybe get one of those like late picks which the Chiefs have been really good at like nailing you know those conditional sevens that turn into a six that type of thing or you know maybe one of these guys is just a practice squad guy and and they’re in the the Ronald Jones free uh type of role uh so I know there’s there’s some different angles to it and maybe one of these guys just ends up on the practice squad just in case there are injuries and look you know there’s no other way to say it isaiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt have faced injuries in their career so that having that role maybe wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world either no 100% tight end room is also before we get O line I think tight end room is an interesting place because you have WY rehabbing that ACL obviously Kelsey is going to be tight end one he’s 35 going to be 36 probably his last year i can’t say for sure just cuz you never know with that guy he’s on the last year of his current deal you’ve got Gray in there brening Stool is an intriguing UDFA that played a lot out of the slot in Clemson what are a couple just things you’ve seen in the the tight end room before we shuffle over to the O line and before we get to Pete Sweeny’s answer here when it comes to highquality meat and seafood the delicious sponsor of today’s video Good Chop is something my entire family has thoroughly enjoyed for about a year and a half now there’s over a 100 menu items to choose from as well which really helps usda choice and prime steaks 100% free shipping on your first box again that’s goodchop.com/youtube and use code HBTC50 to get $50 off plus free shipping on your first box well the way that I see it and you know my understanding is you may not see Jared Wy until like October so that is a that is a big deal for Trey Watson and Jake Brennan still who will be battling for the because we know Andy Reed likes to use multiple tight end sets right so uh one of these UDFAs are going to make the team by default and so I just think people are excited about Brenn but just like don’t sleep on Trey Watson it seemed like he might have been injured the last look that we had uh you know kind of out of the mix same thing with Burning Su um you know I think Watson missed the earlier practice and then Brenn was in a ball cap so you know they got to be on the field to to win the job i think the Chiefs really like them i think they probably had day three grades on them and were pleasantly surprised that they were both available uh to bring in and that’s some good competition i mean you you nailed it travis Kelce is a guy Noah Gray is still to me a player that’s growing his game and I think for Gray what’ll be really interesting is next year when Kelsey isn’t around like can he be that guy i don’t think anyone’s going to be Travis Kelce from a production standpoint but like could he be you know someone that that again maybe less like a Kelsey and more like a Jake Ferguson uh type of player um that that has production when he can and you know blocks well that that type of thing um but yeah one of these guys will make the roster so that’ll be something to watch when it comes to like those deeper position battles once we get to training camp heck yeah and then I’ve seen sometimes in my comments I if I don’t mention him they say it they’re like “Hey don’t don’t sleep on Robert Tonion.” So he’s in the room too a longtime NFL vet a little bit older but I saw him flying around too well because of all these injuries and Kelsey not being there during OTAAS Tanyion’s kind of been the guy which has been I think fun to see yeah and he he’s also in that mix right like let’s say Brenn stool and and Trey Watson they they look a little bit worse than like a tonion theoretically speaking if you don’t have these like dazzling preseason moments maybe you could sink one of those guys on the practice squad and they could they could develop down there like we’ve seen the Chiefs develop you know with Jody Forson or if you want to go even deeper than that Demetrius Harris and then all of a sudden you have someone maybe like next year that you feel really good about that’s been in the building and has really grown and gotten stronger that type of thing so there are different angles to it um I like I said I like one of these guys to be the third tight end and then you know WY spot will just be kind of kept warm until he’s ready to go and and like I said I don’t anticipate that till at least month two of the NFL season so another guy coming off of a season ending knee injury O line Josh Simmons round one pick we don’t need to talk about it too long cuz I feel like it has been the topic of conversation all offseason long but now that you’ve seen multiple practices and Simmons has been doing some teamwork he seems ahead of schedule how’s the O line been looking to you in that regard and then we’ll end it on Trey Smith because I had one more question for you regarding Trey i think the Chiefs are pleasant like as pleasantly surprised as everybody else i think they really came into this essentially saying we’re going to be cautious with Josh Simmons and we’re ultra cautious meaning like maybe in a regular injury there would be checks but I I don’t know hypothetically speaking maybe the training staff was like well we really want to see it for a week and just make sure he’s you know and he’s kind of passed it all and what has been really interesting and this is a a unique development is like we were and I’ll pump Luke myself into this we were like sure oh it’s just going to be Jaylen Moore you know Simmons is young he he’s injured he’s not ready to go jaylen Moore suffered some kind of injury he had a a sleeve compression sleeve on his knee on day six I believe and then on day nine when we went there he was limited so for two practices and granted it is June like but still Moore couldn’t play due to injury and Simmons is doing everything and so I think he’s ahead of schedule i I feel like now I have a lot of optimism for him to like almost have no limitations you would think so long as everything continues to go well at the beginning of training camp and if that’s the case I mean it’s a true battle it is a veteran who the Chiefs like and Jaylen Moore who you know only has the 12 starts we all know about the 49ers thing behind Trent Williams and then it’s a kid who you know was regarded nationally as one of potentially the steels of the draft fell to the Chiefs because of the injury and you understand that because a lot of these teams are like we don’t want to take a chance necessarily on a top 20 pick with someone who’s coming off a torn patellar tendon but it’s been so far so good uh this is also something you just got to have to wait till training camp because as much as these like shorts and shells practices it’s nice to see him doing everything what’ll really be the test is when the the pads are on and you have these OOLDL drills can he if he is the starter to begin training camp can he survive and do all the long drive drills and the heat and you know does the does the knee hold up in those situations but yeah I came into the OTAAS period sort of thinking it’s definitely going to be more and I just like don’t I don’t feel that way anymore just because of how all the this is has developed yeah that’s very interesting i kind of forgot we don’t have to talk about this too long but I just forgot that Jaylen Moore ended his season on IR with a quad they probably just shut him down because it was week 16 they weren’t making the playoffs anyway but having that depth just the more depth the marrier we know what happens if that line can’t hold for Mahomes and that’s just priority number one and I know that I’ve seen some like gripes well it’s like we paid $30 million for Jaylen Moore he’s going to sit on the B yeah but isn’t that worth the money if you don’t have to throw Wani Morris or even which nobody would ever want to do but like punch Kingsley out again like it’s almost like a non-option at this point so having an expensive swing tackle isn’t the worst thing i’m like God how many offensive line injuries have we seen over the years with the Chiefs it’s not not the worst thing in the world for having like an NBA sixth man on the offensive line you know which one of these guys seemingly will will turn out to be then when the pads come on that’s a big question is hey Kingsley by all reports they like him at guard i hope he pans out there i mean because you traded away Joe Tuni he’s now a bear so that’s a big question the left tackle battle the left guard spot but then another question is just the right guard not it’s not a battle or anything like that but what do you think about a long-term deal with Trey Smith are you are you confident that something gets done yeah like I don’t I don’t know if it’ll happen this week and I you know I think there’s an angle where he just skips and you you got to look at this from both sides like I I try to and I just try to remind people that like sometimes players make these decisions and it’s looked at as like oh they don’t care about the team but you you also have to remember like a team can cut a player whenever they want and no one is ever like uh what is the team doing to this guy so you know Trey’s looking out for his his own well-being and he stands to make a lot of money on a multi-year contract and if he does want to come to mandatory mini camp uh to just make sure that his health is intact I I don’t think that’s the worst thing in the world and I don’t actually think it’ll mean anything one way or the other for this getting done i think the Chiefs really want to keep Trey Smith they franchise tagged him because they thought he was the best free agent available in the NFL the only difference is he’s on the team now already you know and so they they felt like in with by doing the franchise tag they ensured that they got the best free agent on available on the market and uh I again I I think deadlines drive deals i don’t know if this will necessarily get done this week but I do get the sense from both sides of this thing that they want to come up with some sort of solution and resolve it and it’s more important for the Chiefs also in the long term of things when you just consider you would ideally like to work out Trent McDuffy or George Koffus or both uh early like this is something that’s become a staple of Howy Roseman and the the Philadelphia Eagles where shoot man that looks like a lot of money for right now but then you get years down the line and you see newer contracts with let’s say a quarterback or an edge rusher and they’re just way more but you’re you already got it done you got that in the bag so I think it behooves both sides to get something done and I think Trey really wants to be in Kansas City i think he really likes the room and and his time here and Andy Reid and the whole thing and and it that everything just kind of leads me to believe when push comes to shove before that July 15th deadline they’ll find a window to like meet in the middle and get get things things done i and I am intrigued to see this is very unique because Trey signed his tag so he is subject to fines uh would he come to mandatory mini camp you know at least in some capacity and be there just because he signed it and to avoid those fines and you know almost a step of good faith i mean I think that’s possible as well

  1. Y do yall keep saying that nfl is not ready 4 us can we win another super bowl be 4 yall keep saying stuff like this and did u see both super bowl loses

  2. I've seen a lot of folks talking about Brashard Smith's size. He's 1 inch shorter and 3 pounds lighter than Jamaal Charles was and he ended up having a pretty solid run as RB1. I'm not saying he'll be Charles but why couldn't he become the starter at RB?

  3. You should get Craig Stout on here, Cole… he has excellent analytics, and I trust his takes… and he comes with the brutal honest truth that many of us could use rn.

  4. HEY Cole absolutely amazing interview about the KC Chiefs,I'm so excited about so many draft picks and UDFA Ty for your Content Cole.Go KC Chiefs 🏈🟥🟨

  5. Mahomes also needs to be more accurate on them right window throws, and sometimes instead of forcing a big play. Go for the 5ths throw that can get us either a 1st down or close enough, but the biggest hurdle n problem is. Our LT. we lost both SB to that reason, it was embarrassing especially the second time.

I won’t be hype until our O line can protect him.
Cause this season will be our test. To see can we fix it or not.
