and welcome into the ballpark happy to have you with us inner league baseball on MLB the show it’s the St louis Cardinals going up against the Chicago White Socks first pitch coming your way next just a little bit away from first pitch and on the hill number 61 well that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case not allowing too many base runners so on most days he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win and I expect to see that from him in this one today and stepping in for the Cardinals Mason Win [Applause] on the corner for a strike and this one is off and running bunch attempt but that goes foul [Applause] next offering upstairs i think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone but just didn’t get it now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed so he can adjust his sights just a little bit [Music] foul ball still a one and two count i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up short stop takes a ball struck him out swinging went back to the fast and it was effective just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there not much to it and I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens on the ground rohos whips it to first on the run and he’ll be safe at first batting third left fielder Alec Berles so a man at first now up for St louis alec Burlson really strong hitting performance recently hitting better than 350 this month off the mark there ball one starts him off with the breaking ball which isn’t surprising they’re trying to keep him off balance but he’s been known to connect on the breaking stuff too man at first one away close one doesn’t get the call and it’s two and 0 swang and a miss there’s the change up betty really sells the change up with that arm action [Applause] this one in the air and there’s two down here’s a Cardinal lineup now and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport Mason Win well Boo there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does i mean batting over 400 with runners in scoring position are you kidding me i I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not wilson Contrus now in the box comes up empty with a swing there [Music] perrera off of first with two away swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field they stop the lead runner at second now two on with two outs fifth third baseman Nolan Aronado here’s Nolan Aronado right through there for a strike next offering is fouled back two outs couple of base runners at first and second outside low and a count one and two [Music] aronado tries to hold up appeal to first it did not go around foul ball another two- two upcoming that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was line drive and that should be extra bases headed for the plate he will score and they take the lead contras headed home he’ll score two runs are in picks himself up a couple of ribbies man that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat that’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night here’s Nolan Gorman there’s a swing and a drive that one is back gone his second home run of the series and they add a couple more it’s 4 nothing first pitch hacking and it paid off for him in a big way power versus power right there like two locomotives colliding who’s going to win well a really good job there by the hitter getting the top hand working powers that fast ball out of here [Music] and up next for St louis Jordan Walker [Applause] first pitch swinging well it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros [Applause] and a foul ball well a really rough inning out there on the mound and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy’s toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward drilled in the air out towards right center and that’ll do it so they move out in front after a fourrun outburst onto the bottom of the first it’s the Cardinals four and the White Socks nothing back here on the south side on the mound for this one steven Matz singing he’s kind of a road warrior yeah I definitely say so you know some guys shrink a little bit on the road they’re so used to just you know having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment so when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark that one lined to the left field and that’s base hit and the leadoff man aboard he was all over that one showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit man at first nobody out chase Maidra steps to the plate for the White Socks and that’s downstairs ball one matts a 6-2 southpaw he features a sinker a change up a curve and he works in a slider that one down the line and foul ball this one in the air center field scott sizing this one up and there’s one down batting third okay let’s check out the lineup and so far this year this has not been a very good offense well in this day and age if you can’t slug and get on base that OPS has to be at a certain level if you’re going to produce runs give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well now it’s Andrew Benendi to hit come on Andrew there’s the strike there’s a good change up to hit up in the zone i don’t think he recognized it i’m sure he’d love to have that one back foul ball there that’s a ball this one in the dirt one ball two strikes to count tman stands at first with one out let’s go come on Socks you can do it a change up missing two and two two balls two strikes three swing and a miss struck him out and the runner holds boi just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone now here’s the cleanup hitter for the White Socks Miguel Vargas off the mark there and that is ball one up the middle when they take the force out that is the inning so one left for the White Socks they’re on the short end of a four nothing score here on the south side here’s the catcher Pedro PZ fast ball is outside and a base hit up the middle man aboard on the leadoff single couldn’t have timed it up any better than that really nice job staying up the middle with his approach he didn’t try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield so digging in Victor Scott 10 in the dirt but kept close to move that one pushed foul out of play off to the left and that misses and that’s ball two and there’s a foul ball swaging a bouncer not and they put the tag on him for the owl now batting shortstop Mason Win back to the top of the lineup and the batter will be the shortstop mason Win struck out swinging his first time right side hard hit and he handles it himself for the out and now it’s Ivon Herrera reached on an infield single his first time and a strike in there when you’re struggling out there on the mound hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard that one fouled off [Music] the 02 that’s a ball two outs and one at scoring position well that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch gets a piece there we’ll do it again that’s to third tosses to first third out so one left for the Cardinals but they’re in front four nothing back at right field now it’s the rookie DH Kyle Teal hitter Kyle Teal matts back to work missed with a change up one and0 matts he has a reputation i don’t know be a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in you know you like that in a relief pitcher but when you have it for a starting pitcher a guy that can get out of a tight spot that is pretty valuable and you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble this guy’s earned a longer leash and because of that confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there they know he’ll find his way through it center fielder Louise Robert and now it’s Luis Robert he’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases Chris how much of the ability to do that in a tight spot is the mental approach i think it’s very much being able to have a laser-like focus slow everything down stay right in that moment pitch to pitch execution and focusing on that catcher’s mid the pitch Gary Simmons our plate umpire today sort of has a reputation as a pitcher umpire yeah a little bit of a wider zone than most I’d say and a wide zone can be tough to deal with as a hitter because you have to start expanding what you’re looking for covering both sides and with the stuff pitchers have today you’re just not going to have a lot of success outside low two and two what about an umpire’s height how much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like yeah I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit which you know as a former hitter you like that you wanted the ball up you didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently that’s a good at bat right there he was down early in that plate appearance works the walk that’s a tough one to swallow right there if you’re on the mound you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away it’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues [Applause] that one misses that’s five straight robert at first one gone and another ball last two pitches have been down in the zone the pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play but in this count he’s going to have to give in elevate his pitches and get back into this at bat that’s in for a strike and a foul ball he stays alive swings through it and that’s a strike out and next to him for the Socks Edgar Caro that one outside and it’s one and0 next offering is fouled back two outs swang and a miss one ball two strikes fights that one away still one and two [Music] and that just misses really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed probably doesn’t agree but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch step off throw to first robert dives back in here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field throw stops the lead runner at second two on and two out batting ninth second baseman here’s Josh Rohos josh Rojas that’s off the mark and that’s ball one ball one no strikes first and second two down bottom half of inning number two in the air right field walker going back on this one nabs it and that is that white Sox strand a couple they’re down four nothing and stepping in for the Cardinals Alec Burlson first time up was a pop out and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter swang and a ball lifted in the air robert calls it in and there’s one away now batting first baseman Wilson Contrarus here comes Wilson Contrarus singled and scored his first time that one is upstairs swang on belted and it gets into the corner but it’s foul really nice swing as he gave that one a ride the opposite way but it sliced just foul down into the corner that had extra bases ridden all over it if it stayed fair one out base is empty that missed by a lot and it’s two and one yeah that’s fouled off two and two gets a piece and stays alive one down base is empty out towards right center that’s well struck and that one hops the wall he’s in at second with a one out double wasting no time he’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle seriously we’re starting with this already [Applause] one out runner at second here’s Nolan Aronado doubled his first time up hit hard on the ground to short zips it to first and they get Aronado for the owl up next for the Cardinals second base Nolan Gorman here’s the second baseman Nolan Gorman he’s already homerred in this game taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level just missed one foul ball so a foul ball makes it one and two swing and a ground ball base hit right field here’s the throw to the plate but it’s offline it’s five nothing well done drives in the run it’s hard to hit a baseball much better than that and even a lot of professional hitters aren’t able to reach an exit vo of 114 mph tell you what that’s a very impressive swing at the bat here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move number 61 departs and this is one he’d like to forget back with a new arm after this now pitching for the pitcher for the White Socks number 64 hasn’t pitched in the last three days smith and now the right fielder Jordan Walker flyed to center his first time on the inside corner for a strike 0 and one one run across to the frame so far we’re here in the top half of inning number three up the middle Maid sends it to first out number three so one run in the inning on this base hit and the lead is now 5 nothing back after this on the show back to the top of the White Sox lineup here’s Mike Tman one for one he let off the bottom of the first with a single just off the outside edge ball one just missed [Applause] swanging a ground ball onto first lead off man retired here in the third good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for ball on the ground nice ground out now it’s the shortstop chase Maid fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one he’s not the power guy but he can hurt you to all parts of the ballpark and that drops in for a strike the shorts stop takes a ball i got one ball one strike swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands fouls it off still one and two and that’s in the dirt well this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat i’m sure there’s some times where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter that one just misses he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked the 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that walk one gone runner at first andrew Benendi steps to the plate for the White Socks 0 for one he struck out swinging last time first pitch misses ben and Chendi the former first round pick Golden Spikes award winner that one finds the zone and the count one and one that pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track ground ball up the middle dive and he’s got it flips it from the ground that’s one what a double play that was inning over making it look easy at the Keystone position definitely worth another look he’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout digging in pedro PZ catcher Pedro PZ go that’s in there pahes goes 5′ 11 in 26 years old and he was a sixth round draft pick back in 2019 next offering is in for a strike that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another two balls two strikes that’s too low and now it’s three and two [Music] swing and a miss struck him out [Applause] now up for St louis victor Scott 0 for one he grounded out in his first at bat boo this guy’s just a tremendously talented center fielder gold glove caliber type out there offensively he can do some things but you know also has some streakiness as well i think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out you know he saves runs in the outfield so that’s going to buy him more time that gets by him back to the leadoff spot in the St louis lineup and here’s the St louis leadoff man mason Win for two in this one that’s a ball squirts away a little bit and that’s in for a strike this is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much you got to make sure that you field the ball cleanly and get one out first it’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box slice to right and Foul ball come on two two of the count in the dirt blocked and that one is inside and ball four to a board almost a coin flip for the umpire in that call but most umpires just don’t want to give pitchers a break up in the zone like that ivon Herrera two on one out here’s the Cardinal DH ivon Herrera one for two swings and hits one in the air out towards right field and it stays fair the run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single and it’s now a six-run lead so one out with two aboard and up next for St louis Alec Burlson he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup brothers at the corners one away top half of inning number four [Applause] swinging a foul out of play [Applause] two on one out that’s down and in two balls two strikes you got this [Applause] and it remains two and two [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just misses the mark outside the zone this is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended what you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands that’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants to short could be two my draw over to second and that’s two one run a pair of hits no errors and one left on now to the bottom of the fourth it’s the Cardinals six and the White Socks nothing here’s the cleaned up hitter for the Socks Miguel Vargas he’s 0 for one it’s interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you’re looking at that position you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed but he does and I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed it makes the whole team that much better that one misses and now three and 0 what about a playing another position on defense one that would require a little more range absolutely and I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game it’d surprise a lot of people you might even be able to put him in center field four pitches that’s an easy walk man he could have walked me right there boo last one wasn’t even close so man aboard Kyle Teal steps to the plate for the White Socks and first off is fouled off [Music] let’s keep it going and that is out of play this guy’s seen two change ups in a row could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here ball one in the dirt one ball two strikes to count [Applause] rocketed out towards right center scott makes the grab one down luis Robert now he reached out to walk his first time center fielder luis Robert Jr and that gets the inside corner for a strike one’s the count come on let’s go on the ground of first could be two fires to second for one back to the pitcher covering it’s a double play nicely done and that’ll do it so they go quietly there onto the top of the fifth we go it’s the Cardinals six and the White Socks nothing and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus and here it comes pulled down the line this one hammered but it’s fouled oh that’s a really good pass to the ball right there just a little bit too quick he’s got to find a way just let it travel a hair more strike two activity in the bullpen grant Taylor appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves this would be his major league debut up and in look out straighten him up a little bit two strikes [Music] in the air center field robert moves under it he’s there he’s got it and there’s one down now batting third baseman Nolan Aronado so now it’s Nolan Aronado nolan Aronado at the plate aronado guy who delivers big time power at the dish and will probably go down as one of the greatest defensive third baseman of all time ripped on a line to center roberts kills it down and there’s two away [Applause] now batting second baseman Nolan two down base is empty now Nolan Gorman he’s already homered here in this one first offering and it just misses counts one and open look out and it hit him first base and stepping in for the Cardinals Jordan Walker jordan Walker fly ball down the line this has got a chance and it is foul well that’s where you want to be right there all over that first pitch fast ball just a little too much hook on it straighten that thing out you get to jog around the bases and that one fouled off two outs close but called a ball one and two to count caught a break right there pretty good pitch on the outside corner that’s a little high and the count is even two and two sometimes you got to fight to get back into an at bat take some tough pitches even out the count and a breaking ball misses outside great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it so now two on and two outs not what he wanted to do right there Boo that keeps this inning alive puts a runner in scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead so first and second with two outs and now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pah and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike two on two outs inside just missed swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field robert makes the catch and that’ll do it so the Cards strand a couple but they’re on top by a count of six to nothing and now the first baseman Ryan Nota and there’s one thing on his mind this at bat getting that first hit at the big league level mats back to work right through there for a strike he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball and a foul ball one ball two strikes next pitch inside two balls two strikes fouled off the plate they’ll do it again cut out and miss curve ball struck him out he had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen steven Matz gives way and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today gave him some length back with a new arm after this so they turn to the veteran pitcher in this spot Sunny Gray definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes and now here is Edgar Caro that one finds the zone strike one the White Socks with a lot of ground to make up last half of inning number five [Music] to the right side hoops it still finds a way to get off a throw and they get him the misplay made it a bit messy but they clean things up for the out second base two outs space is empty so up next for Chicago Josh Roz right his first time and that one upstairs ball one i can’t play around with him here it’s a six-run lead at this point got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot and that misses and the count now two nothing [Applause] and a popup right side foul territory contras under it and he’s got it one two three go white Socks still up against a 6 nothing deficit so digging in Victor Scott we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offensive side for just a second Chris it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most first pitch doesn’t find the zone well he gets to balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away a little bit high and it’s three and0 that one misses so a lead off walk now mason win next up for the Cardinals and first offering is fouled off you know these Cardinals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one one thing that really stands out is their chase rate league average is around 30% but they’re at this one’s into the outfield could be extra bases coming home he will score and the lead runner holds on at second base comes through with the RBI a lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head that’s what I’m trying to do just keep that approach simple and right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely so now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter Ivon Herrera [Applause] and there’s the ball it’s been tough fooling these hitters and those chase rate numbers back it up they’ve been really smart at the plate and that’s one of the best ways to frustrate a pitcher because nothing seems to come easy runner at second nobody out [Applause] and a foul ball [Music] [Applause] next pitch is downstairs one on nobody out a run in and we’re the top half of the six that one outside and now three and one [Applause] high-fly ball out to center field robert moves under it makes the catch for the out now batting left fielder Alec Burles alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals 0 for three in this one [Applause] and that one clips the corner one out and a runner at second squeaks [Applause] through that one it’s a strike out here’s Contras now the first base Wilson Contrus [Applause] and that is downstairs and that’s ball one [Applause] fast ball is outside Aronado first and second two down here’s Nolan Aronado [Applause] that misses the zone and that is ball one two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them six straight outside the strike zone tough spot right here a couple runners on two ball count you can’t nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it’s going to bring in some runs and that misses as well first and second two down [Applause] and they’re all loaded up gosh another walk in this one man he is having some real issues with control two outs bases full now up for St louis nolan Gorman up the middle my drop they get the force they limit the damage here so they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded top of the order do up in the home half of the six it’s the Cardinals seven and the White Socks nothing so the batting order turns over now it’s the right fielder Mike Tman sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit solo runner aboard to start the inning chase Maid digs in now well here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get going let’s go come on you can do it rolled to short possible two ball quickly to second for one and two in time to first for the double play they made that double play look so easy but it was far from routine that’s the one thing about big leaguers they make tough plays look simple two down base is empty here’s the left fielder Andrew Benendi and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter well as good as things can be it can be a tough day at the office even for the skippers seeing the offense just sputter not able to get anything going two down nobody on here in the bottom of the six off the plate inside now one and two and that one in the air center field quinn on his way over no trouble here puts it away for the out and that is that nothing do it for the White Socks they continue to trail 7 nothing and now Jordan Walker right fielder Jordan Walker that one in there across the letters all one’s the count next offering is fouled back [Music] liner and that should be extra bases now he’ll turn for second and he starts the seventh with a leadoff double well he found himself behind in the count right there but he didn’t give in he got a pitch he could drive but he didn’t get too excited like a lot of guys do and pull off the baseball really good timing all the way through the swing and the barrel was so on plane with the ball easy drive into the gap for that double and up next for St louis Pedro Pahes one for three that’s a slider for a strike man at second misses off the play and one and one [Music] and there’s a rocket into the outfield coming home he’ll score easily throws to second that’s two consecutive extra base hits for this team this is why hitters work so hard on driving the ball gap to gap in batting practice there’s a lot of room out there and if you can rip one into that open space it usually means extra bases manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound number 64 out of the game walks a big problem for him today as he leaves on the hook for the loss back after a quick break with a new pitcher now pitching for the White Sox going with a new arm grant and with the big deficit on the scoreboard he almost has to just put that out of his mind every outing matters for relievers in their numbers but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game so up next Victor Scott this guy can absolutely fly i think one of the faster players in baseball swinging a foul straight back [Applause] one and one and it’s fouled away runner in scoring position nobody out here in the top half of inning number seven that one missed [Applause] out to short mro to first and he beats it everyone’s safe well that’s one of those where you just have to tip your cap because he couldn’t have played that one any better stood no chance with the speed running down the line so back to the top of the order here’s the shorts stop at the play mason win called strike right there [Applause] y one lined into left center base hit rounds third headed for the plate he’ll score it’s an RBI single and they now lead by nine four hits in a row and they’re really swinging it here so much of good hitting is finding holes in the defense that’s why you’re always thinking line drive into the gap those kinds of swings really boost your confidence ivon Herrera getting ready to hit breaks his bat there’s a soft liner not and they tag him out [Applause] now batting leftielder Alec Burl and stepping in for the Cardinals Alec Burlson [Applause] swinging a miss strike one in the on deck circle you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball last thing you want to do is lined into left center and that should be extra bases they extend their lead as the runner scores from second man second with one away wilson Contrarus now up to the plate just missed [Music] this one in the air right field it’s going to fall for a hit coming home he will score in safely with a double his second of the day up next for the Cardinals third now the White Sox RBI single and the lead continues to grow up next for the Cardinals man at first with one gone now up for St louis Nolan Gorman just missed booer the 63 lefty 32 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season [Music] [Applause] right through there for a strike movement for the White Socks in their bullpen tyler Alexander the left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose alt Villa warming up as well still only one out here in the inning and now two on one [Applause] in the air left field down the line hops over the wall that’s an automatic double next for the Cardinals right fielder Jordan Walker jordan Walker will hit next [Applause] and the first pitch misses for ball one one down runners at second and third and another ball [Applause] yeah the pitch is in for a strike and it’s two and one [Applause] cut out and miss 96 of that basketball spoils that one and it remains two and two [Applause] two on one out runs it up to 96 to record the punch out well it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger here’s the catcher to hit pedro Pah [Applause] and that one sliced fouled [Applause] swings through that [Applause] headed down the line and no one can get to it it’s a foul ball andy O2 strike three got him with the sweeper attack on six more as they just continue to turn it on in this one midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch cardinals out front 13- nothing miguel Vargas steps to the plate for the White Socks third baseman Miguel Vargas swinging a foul straight back you know these White Socks need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings they’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some Oh this one high and deep way back there and that one is off the batter’s eye wow out of here he’ll circle the bases it’s 13-1 he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat he’s that confident anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one nice piece of hitting there at the plate here’s the White Socks DH Kyle Teal that is upstairs for ball one sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through but it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves there sliced hard but foul [Applause] late swing fouled to the left [Applause] swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt catcher has it fires the first got him one away on the strike out i mean there aren’t many curve balls in the sport today that break like that thing does huge movement it’s so difficult to get on the same plane and even think about squaring it up let alone get a piece and hope he throws something else to keep the atbat alive and now here’s the big center fielder Luis Robert up and in and it’s one and0 counts one and0 [Applause] strike one one and one [Applause] no inside fast ball for a strike it’s two and two one way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they’re doing that right here one out base is empty and a run in here the bottom of the seventh still two and two after the foul ball strike three and that’s two in a row now batting first two outs base is empty ryan Nota steps to the plate for the White Socks who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts and that one is downstairs and that’s ball one lifted in the air right field walker gets under it and that ends the inning but the White Socks get one on a homer we look ahead to inning number eight it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show now it’s going to be Victor Scott if there’s nobody on in front of him you know a single for him many times is a double this guy is off to the races ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck that skips over the fence so it’s an automatic double oh that’s how you respond leadoff man comes up gets into scoring position now there are several ways that they can get this run across back to the top of the order now mason Win next up for the Cardinals ball one no this one in the dirt hit in the air out to center field robert moves under it and it’s caught for the out now batting designated hitter Ivon Herrera so a man aboard and next is the designated hitter Ivonne Herrera first pitch misses [Music] there’s a strike one out and a runner at second and we’re in the top of the eighth just outside two balls two strikes and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now get on the ground to short slings it across two away now batting left fielder Alec Burles now the left fielder Alec Burlson [Music] upstairs one and0 line drive makes the grab and that’ll end the inning [Applause] now here is Carol Socks catcher number seven Gray back to work right through there for a strike the one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike swing and a miss chased it out of the zone this guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone if you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt next pitch is outside and it skips in the dirt [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two [Music] ground ball left side to first one up one down now batting second baseman Josh and now it’s going to be Josh Rojots foul ball there base is empty one away here the bottom half of the eighth inning well struck right field and that one hops the wall around first heading for two and he’ll pull into second safely and now the right fielder Mike Tman swings through that one 0 and one’s the count runner at second here one gone come on let’s go that finds the mark on the inside corner gets a piece and it stays 0 and two and that’s downstairs and outside swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field walker makes the catch and there are two outs now batting the shorts stop now the number two hitter Chase Maid [Applause] and first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Applause] there’s the strike perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes now back is against the wall he’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly man on second two down knocks that one away and will do it again chicago up the middle and there’s a hit coming home the throw in it’s offline the run comes in it’s 132 really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat he got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point pretty impressive for an 02 count runner at first with two away and up next for Chicago Andrew Benendi fast ball in for a strike it’s 0 and one [Applause] ground ball right side and that’s just foul [Applause] foul ball still 0 and two [Applause] two outs fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 and that one hammered and that is a foul ball [Applause] foul ball it stays nothing and two [Applause] all one there eighth pitch of the at coming up [Applause] just misses with that one great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two such a better feeling for the hitter fights it off he’ll see another [Music] here’s a two- two yeah that’s outside 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch so now two on and two outs well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen sunny Gray will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base back with a new pitcher after this now pitching for pitching change here phil M number eight and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance miguel Vargas steps to the plate for the White Socks [Applause] there’s the strike really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door that pitch is devastating two aboard two outs and that’s in there for a strike and quickly nothing at two all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls but at this point he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone keeps the bat going with a foul ball gets a piece and it stays 0 and two [Applause] swing and a ball softly hit out of the left center and he makes the catch and that is that two men left stranded but they do push across one ninth inning coming up the Cardinals lead it 13-2 now so they turn to their closer Jordan Leisure and he’s coming in to pitch on 4 days rest right here and that might not be a factor at all in terms of being rusty but he should definitely be well rested now off the Cardinals number four hitter Wilson Contras wilson Contras [Applause] bounced up the middle throws the first in time and Contrarus is retired really nice job to get your first out of the ball game for the Cardinals third baseman Nolan nolan Aronado now at the plate [Applause] popped up foul territory behind the plate carol makes the catch and there’s two down two down base is empty nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals and it may be a long shot but a triple here will give him the cycle inside corner that’s a strike 0 and one 0 and one [Applause] swing and a ball driven out to center back there got all of that one another homer he’s done it again his second homer of the game it’s 14-2 singi the ball is jumping off his back yes it is tons of loud contact man it’s been impressive two seam fast ball on the outside corner usually produces a ball on the ground but hitter does a really great job of letting it travel get deep enough so that he could get barreled to it and he didn’t miss a stitch so two away with nobody on and up next for St lewis Jordan Walker and the first offering is not close [Applause] two down to this one popped up foul ground first base side nota makes the play and it’s out number three one for the Cardinals on the solo home run we head now to the bottom of the ninth you’re dialed into the show so the closer summon from the bullpen Ryan Hley and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these numbers so now it’s the White Sox DH Kyle Teal designated hitter Kyle Teal [Applause] that’s down and in [Applause] on the ground right side and it goes just foul [Applause] that one in triple digits got him swinging the high heat too much on that one oh we see it more commonly in the sport these days but man a tripledigit fast ball blown right by someone is still pretty awesome to witness i mean you got to be geared up and ready to swing it when a guy like this comes out of the bullpen because that fast ball it eats and if you’re not ready you’re going to be walking back to the dugout robert now at the plate as he swings through strike one it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he’s really late right now and there’s a ball [Applause] one down base is empty check swing and he went now one and two one ball two straight [Applause] foul ball left side he’ll see another look out that ball is smoked man and I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just to ensure safety for the fans last thing as a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit and now the count is even wow triple digits on the gun i know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past but it’s still impressive to watch the delivery to Robert and it remains two and two the Cards up big in this one here last half of inning number nine and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again [Applause] the two- two and they’ll do it again and that’s in the dirt still just the second batter of the inning and on the mount he’s already thrown 13 pitches they got him working hard out there downstairs and that’s ball four it wasn’t easy but he earned that walk after a long at bat pretty good pitch on 3-2 right around the knees but just no help from the umpire here in the bottom of the ninth one out ryan Nota the next to hit [Applause] first pitch and it just misses [Applause] and another ball the White Socks with a lot of ground to make up we’re in the last half of the ninth inning [Applause] had a strike right through there that one in triple digits [Applause] next pitch is outside [Applause] swing and a miss at 99 at the knees that was straight queso right there [Applause] gets under and pops it up and Aronado makes the catch that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate had pretty good timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up so they’re down to their final out and the batter now Edgar Carol [Applause] ball one no strikes [Applause] there there’s the strike two outs and one and two dangerous spot for that slider right there didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break tell you what he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again kelley is just one strike away hit to right and that should do it he’s got it ball game and the Cardinals slug their way to a win in this one offensive explosion today for these players they gave up a few runs but they had more than enough firepower to turn this one into a blowout 14-2 at the end of this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show I’m John Shambi thanks for joining
