first pitch right after this Just about set to go now And today’s starting pitcher number 61 Well that whip is just below the league average And that’s a good thing in this case not allowing too many base runners So on most days he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win And I expect to see that from him in this one today Ready to go and the batter will be the shorts stop Mason win Swing and a tapper that rolls foul down the line and that lands in no man’s land A foul ball That one to first not and he takes it himself for the out Now we take a check of the St Louis Cardinals lineup and singing I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander Yeah you’re not the only one Boo I’m a bit surprised as well And you know some hitters work well against same-handed pitching You know just back in 2024 Bobby Whit Jr Vlad Guerrero Jr and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties So maybe they got a plan after all Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and Ben Tendy able to make the grab Hey man four pitches two outs That is an excellent pace Two down base is empty And up next for St Louis Alec Burlson Burlson hitting third in the lineup And he was a second round pick in 2020 Drilled out towards left center field That’s well struck Dives but it kicks off his glove and he’s in at second with a two out double Well clearly he was ready to hit right there Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way it feels so good And that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate It’s even better when it gets you extra bases Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up So runner at second two down Here’s the get to see you two three maybe even four times in a start So just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is We’ll see if it’s that way in this one Right side Contrarus takes it himself One gone Bottom half of the first Time to check out the lineup for the White Socks Dead last team batting average And we all talk about how batting average isn’t as valued as it used to be but clearly it’s been a real struggle for him to score this year Chris Yeah Booan I I know you’re more of an OBP and slugging guy OPS OPS plus Uh but in this situation at some point you have to have a higher batting average to go along with that on base or that slug to ultimately be able to score runs And they just haven’t been able to do that this season Chase Maid at the plate now That’s ball one One out Base is empty Line drive Caught That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well I know it didn’t produce a hit but he made solid contact And that’s all you’re looking to do then can be tighter in others But I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent So you got to stay ready up there And that is cut on and miss And the count one and two Yeah One and that’s ball two Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there Started on the edge of the plate with the spin You know it’s going to finish well off the plate And that’s ripped to the left Base hit So they get a man aboard with a one out single Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way Didn’t get jumpy Didn’t try to pull the ball He let it get deep Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit One down And up next for Chicago Edgar Caro And that drops in for a strike Nota leads off strikes and one gone Well take a look at the three pitch sequence here Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle And right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can do is hope to foul that off Now here is Victor Scott swings and set the pitcher up I mean if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot Steven Matz out of the game And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today Gave him some length Back with a new arm after this New pitcher for the Cardinals Sunny Gray Definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes So the go-ahead run in scoring position And next to hit for the Socks Ryan Nota one for one with a single so far And the sweeper misses for a ball runner at second Two down We’re here in the bottom of the fourth Swing and a miss He was late Strike two I think he was sitting off speed there Swing and a miss That’s a strike out Chased the fast up the ladder for strike three He’s in a tough spot Had to make a great pitch Did it Got the strike out Gets out of the heading for two And one pitch into the inning it’s a leadoff double Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that you’re thinking double at the very least Put a great swing on it and man he wasn’t fooled at all A chance now to take the lead And at this point in the game that could be a deciding run Now it’s going to be Jordan Walker baby First off bringing it just misses You know these cards as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story We’ve seen it quite a bit today It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group That one finds the corner and the count one and one And on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game And that is downstairs Two in one Two balls one strike
