Pedro Martinez Sounds Off on Red Sox for Rafael Devers Trade

i want to get into the Denver stuff immediately man obviously that’s been the the one story that’s been going on um all across baseball everybody’s giving their opinions everybody’s giving their thoughts i I want to hear it straight from your mouth what What do you got on this whole Devil’s thing now he’s been traded over to San Francisco um are we looking at is this a good thing for the Red Sox good thing for the Giants what are what were your immediate thoughts uh you know first of all I I I want to thank you for having me and uh it is an honor to to share you know some of the things I think and and I know about this situations uh thank you it’s a great honor to actually have my colleague uh have this moment with me listen on the de situation I haven’t even I haven’t really been outspoken on it because I didn’t really participate too much on those things but I I have to tell you I I think we made a mistake as an organization to let it get out of hand and one of the biggest things that I have come to notice is that the Red Sox had a beautiful opportunity to keep everything including Deber’s attitude in between the the the you know the players the the inside the clubhouse inside uh with the baseball people the Red Sox have a lot of people listen if you call in Pedroya you call in Veretch you call in David you call myself you call me in into the situation I’m pretty sure we would have convinced Devers to do anything we wanted the Red Sox to have Devers do the thing is when you don’t involve your baseball people in in those kind of situations uh it’s hard to understand how the player is is going to respond devers is a guy that is not very outspoken in his Spanish English or any language whatsoever uh you need to get to know Devers in order for you to kind of you know tell him what to do and I think Alex and and the Red Sox dropped the ball on that because Alex is someone that I think Devers uh was able to trust but the way it was explained to him it didn’t it didn’t sit well with Devers i think he needed more help he needed more people like Pedroa like Big Poppy like me maybe Tech some of us to pull him aside and as former players and people that he respects i think it would have been uh well taken by Devers but it got out of hand it went to the media it became uh an ugly scene for for for both sides but now I’m glad Boston got pretty good talent and Devers is going to be happy in San Francisco where baseball people like Boster Posey are going to be closer to Devers and and figuring out what to do and he can trust guys like Boster Posey to to be honest to him and tell him straight up what he should be doing because he does have the ranks yeah no I I agree with you in a sense that you know it takes other people um either former players uh players that have won previously players that have been a part of their organization and current players as well to kind of be able to talk to a player about those things right and talk to about you know the these are some of the things that we see with the team and what could best work with the team and give us a chance to win uh one of the things that I look at too is and maybe I can get your take on this too is I I didn’t feel like there’s anybody that Des could really go to within his own team that would be able to say “Hey sit down with Des hey man um this might be a good situation for you to be able to take some ground balls over at first base or we might end up needing you to be able to move positions.” Basically he is the the the face of that organization so it doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of veteran leadership around that organization to be able to sit Des i want to get your thoughts on on whether or not there’s somebody you felt even on the current teams could be able to go to and talk to in that sense uh in that sense I I must tell you uh the Red Sox do keep it quiet uh but we we’re always around we’re always available pedro is available uh Tech is working with the team there someone he can really trust uh the thing is I don’t think that they were asked to individually go to deers to do those things and the the press conference that they held the other day didn’t help it at all because you hear you know the front office Sam Kennedy Brelo and all those guys talking about the situation and they talked about championship and stuff like that but it’s not just the championship it’s not what we have done it’s understanding the human inside the uniform and that’s what nobody probably understands about Devers how was he feeling when you were telling him dump your dump your glove uh was he offended by was he feeling I don’t know funny about not being treated like someone that could be worth a position in in in the infield uh I I think there was a lot of miscommunication uh but it should have been handled by baseball people baseball people people that have been there that understand what it’s like to wear the uniform and at the same time be a human i don’t I don’t think they did the best job at doing that and uh hopefully this will will will probably be helpful for the future because so far Mookie Bets did not leave happy uh bad trade john Lester did not leave happy bad trade as well everyone uh Chris Sale did not leave happy everybody is like looking around uh uh to see what’s going on with Boston and we went from probably being the most uh probably I would say lovable team in in the last 20 years to probably one of the teams that everybody’s going to be looking at in the future and saying if they treated Devers if they treated Chris Sale that way if they disrespected John Lester uh free agents are going to really be looking at Boston in a in a in a different way and that’s what I’m concerned that the culture that we left Pedroa uh Papy Manny all of us uh Tech all of those great players that went through the organization uh is going to disappear and people are going to start looking at Boston as a bad organization or an organization that doesn’t respect the players and that I would hate to see because we went from being the one of the most popular teams in the last 25 years to probably be one of the most hated team in all of baseball and I don’t want to see that yeah no I No I don’t think anybody wants to see that obviously the Red Sox have done such a great job with their organization um I I want to get your thoughts on now Poppy has been recorded um or reported mentioning that he had reached out to Raphael and to try to get him to help the situation but he never really returned messages and obviously this is somebody um of such high standard in the Red Sox organization um you know Hall of Famer what what are your thoughts on Raphael maybe never getting the communication with Big Poppy who could probably help out in this situation well Big Poppy also made a mistake in the spring training by uh speaking in front of the cameras about some of the things that he needed to to tell Devers and just like I said before that should have been handled in house big puppy should have gone out with with Devers to talk about those things not really openly speak in uh in the field because the cameras are able to pick up everything we say everything every whisper that we that we have out there is being picked up by the microphone so uh that was the first mistake from Big Poppy the other thing is uh I don’t like to hear those comments after things happen like that i would love for Big Poppy to come over grab Devers go to a restaurant go to his house throw a barbecue and talk to Devers in his house uh as a player I would love to have a leader tell me Pedro I would love to exchange some words with you but I want to do it in your house i want to do it in your hotel room i want to do it in a restaurant just you and me alone that’s how I would treat it that’s how I would do it if they granted me the opportunity to go see Devers but I was never asked to go see Devers uh and I actually had conversation with Alex and I said “Alex I’m open to always be around and in these kind of situations mediate.” I remember that Lester at one point was uh disrespected by one of the officials in the front office and he felt offended and he was negotiating an extension with Boston and he decided that he wasn’t going to talk anymore so I I I told you know some of the guys in the front office allow me to talk to Lester and let me see if I can get him back to the table and all it took was for me to sit down and chat with with with Lester and talk to him and he says “Well Pedro I have so much respect for you that I’m gonna forget about how mad I am and I’m going to sit back down to to talk.” Even though it didn’t work out right at least I felt you know really happy that Lester was able to listen and I’m pretty sure Debors would have done that if you sent the right people to talk to him yeah and now you have Brezlo mentioning um that he believes and and I want to get kind of your thoughts on this too that the Red Sox um are now a better team right like with them moving on from Raphael Devers do you agree with him in that sense that this team is better now whether that be culture whether that be you know we both been in the clubhouse we know that there’s certain tension that comes with you know a certain player may not be uh doing what everybody else expected of him right obviously the highest paid player in the room there comes a lot of uh observations with those types of things the idea that Brelo says this team is better now moving on from this uh do you agree with those sentiments no I don’t i don’t uh you have in baseball there’s one thing that’s always going to keep you humble if you don’t show me the numbers that that that say that the team is going to be better uh without devers and the new guys that that we’re getting in the trade uh well I I I don’t have a reason to believe that but at the same time I must say remember Breastlo is a first year uh GM and he’s young also he’s going to make mistakes it doesn’t matter how bright he is and how many degrees he has from MIT uh in baseball he’s still young and and as a GM and dealing with players he’s still young he’s got a lot to see from baseball as well and I believe he’s going to do that and that’s probably a a question that he should have never answered i think uh that that that would have been a question that I would try to skip and I would just say I’m hopeful that the team is going to respond as good or maybe better without devers and the and the the the kind of players that we got uh that would have been a more convincing kind of answer than just boldly going out there and saying that because Devers has done great with every team he has played for the Red Sox and what those guys are about to do we haven’t seen yet now I saw what Devers did with the team and that that is a mistake from Brlo and I would not hide it from him he should have never answered that question yeah there there’s no doubt the offensive impact that uh Raphael Devers has brought to the Red Sox year after year after year now it is interesting that he has now gone over to San Francisco and he’s already mentioned that he’s willing to play anywhere now and he’s been seen taking first base ground balls over at first base already uh tonight uh before the game so uh I guess what what do you think uh about him now all of a sudden changing and saying “Okay I’m okay playing first base now being with a new team.” Savior I’m going to I’m going to tell you this from my point of view and knowing Devers uh Devers feels like he was mistreated uh I I think there was a little bit of lack of respect about approaching him or maybe not lack of respect but misunderstanding his attitude his feelings who de and and Devers I can tell you one thing 100% and I want everybody to quote me on this devers is a team player devers will do anything to try to win a ball game for his team whoever tries to point a finger at Devers uh about not being a team player is totally wrong devers remember Devers is still relatively young he’s learning on he was learning as he was coming to the big leagues but Devers is a team player divers is one of the best we have seen uh swinging the stick he improved defensively through the years but listen you can’t be perfect at everything you do he’s going to be below average in some things and and better than average in some others but nobody can crossify Devers or call him not not being a a a a good teammate or a great person or a team player he is a team player he would do anything the problem is there was a whole bunch of bad communications with Devers and lack of understanding the human inside the uniform i must repeat that nobody understood the human at the moment inside the uniform and that is part of the homework that we have to do in the front office in the field and off the field yeah yeah the the disappointing thing is you know now it’s almost going to be a bad look on de willing to play different position with a new organization i almost feel bad for Red Sox fans they they say goodbye so quickly to Devs um knowing that he was the face of that organization and get the bad taste in their mouth uh with with that whole thing man but I but I obviously wish the best for this Red Sox organization hopefully those players in return are able to have some impact this season and hopefully the flexibility financially will help out the organization as well i I want to get to the next topic and and just get into whether or not this was the worst trade that we’ve seen from the Red Sox right cuz we’ve seen you mentioned some some tough ones mookie Betts go to the Dodgers obviously that was a tough one we’ve now seen also Chris Sale get traded to the Braves he wins a a Sai Young um in a in a sense so now we’ve seen this trade let me rank them what do you have what do you have Devers as being the worst one of these other ones what are you thinking no I need to see what happens with Devers and and the young guys that they acquired from San Francisco but so far I must say I believe it’s is Mookie Bets mookie Bets became an MVP uh has been a champion twice which is what Boston would love to see uh I just I just don’t I don’t feel like the de trade is is to be mentioned yet because we haven’t seen the results of devers in San Francisco neither have we seen the results of the players coming from San Francisco in Boston so that’s yet to be seen now the Chris sale is also another trade that looks really bad for the Red Sox uh John Lester is another trade that looks really bad uh for the Red Sox uh the but Muki Mooki is irreplaceable it has to be Mookie one of the probably worst trades in in in the history of the

Boston Red Sox legend and Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez joined B/R Walkoff Live with Xavier Scruggs to react to the Sox trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

  1. Thank you Pedro for continuing to be such a magnificent person as well as one of my favorite Boston stars ever. You spoke truthfully and with great insight into Devers' mindset. Clearly Breslow botched communication almost from the beginning and made it next to impossible to repair, given his arrogance and intransigence.

  2. Love ya Pedro. You are my best player of all time. My opinion if I had to win one game with a pitcher in their prime I’d take you. But you are wrong sir Players that have left. John Lester is the only one you are correct about. Larry Luciano did that. They low balled him. He deserved what he he got from that cubs. There is your win Mookie Betts. Did not want to be in Boston. Period. He hinted he wanted out. Everyone knew it which is why they got so little in return. If they offered him 500 million he was saying no. Chris Sale. My god he didn’t pitch the last 3 years when he was with the Red Sox. Facts. Hurt his shoulder riding a bike. Bullshit. What were they suppose to do? Horrible contact. Thx for the title though. Wouldn’t have got it without ya. But please. Dustin Pedroia my god had the best friggin contract ever . The last 6 years of that deal he did zero. Hurt all the time betrayed his teammates you forget when he blamed his pitchers when Manny Machado was thrown at ? Forget that? Manny Ramirez ? Please ? Need I say more ? Best right handed bat I ever saw. But I do remember him holding his bat for 3 strikes in Yankee stadium from the sandman when his team needed him to pinch hit. Devers sound familiar? Where else do I go? Beckett wouldn’t throw a curve until they threaten him then we won a title. Then you. You’re the best ever. You changed everything. That Allstar game was the best pitching performance in the height of the steroid era ever. You were untouchable. That said the last contact you got should never have happened. Your shoulder was shot You wanted to be paid for pasted performance. I would have given it too you because I love you as a player and I’m not a GM.

  3. Sounds like David Ortiz reached out to Devers and he Devers never responder to David Ortiz.
    As I heard it.
But , a lot of comments have been negative. Hard to know what actually happen…

  4. I think Pedro is 100% correct. The former players have been in devers shoes and they would have been able to communicate to him effectively and meditated the whole situation without having anything at stake influencing them. Instead John Henry and Craig breslow are too arrogant to do that. Breslow loves dropping the “I know some of you think I’m just an Ivy League suit but I was a big leaguer too” line trying to be relatable but he comes off as a disingenuous, emotionless robot.

  5. lol this host is a fool he said this looks bad that raffy says now he will play in any position. What a east coast homer no wonder he doesn’t know anything. Especially after everything Pedro Martinez said it’s as if this host didn’t even listen. This guy is so bad at his job that I don’t even know his name. 😂😂😂😂 get a new job homer 😂😂😂

  6. Pedro is a beisbol strategist why the front office never called him to be involved on Devers situation 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️now is too late

  7. There was no communication with Devers,They should have told him Alex Bregman was coming immediately after he joined, they didn't, disrespectful disrespectful to Devers.Nuff Said.

  8. Devers had as many hits tonight as the entire Red Sox lineup. The Sox are running a minor league team out on the field every night, and it's an absolute joke. Henry needs to forced to sell, Breslow and Kennedy need to be run out of town, and Cora's perpetual mediocrity needs to come to an end.

  9. Nonsense Alex Cora is a former player and Latino. Fever estranged himself from the team for years. He didn’t respect the owner who pays him. It’s about the team!

  10. They thought they had another Manny, and they were wrong! This guy was my favorite and that's my team! Pedro was a-1 accurate with what he said. Mookie was the worse damn transaction they made he was the heart of the team and they sent him to the damn Dodgers!!! Notice a common theme people all of them were black damn near

  11. Pedro el mejor y mas respetado, y se sabe dirigir a sus similares sin ofender ni maltratar, David habla sin coherencia y habla demas y con arrogancia.

  12. Henry should've never knee jerk signed, because he got heckled, Devers to begin with. No plan or foresight, just reactionary. This ownership/front office really is the joke of MLB.

  13. Pedro is speaking facts💯💯 spot on from one of my favorite all time redsox. There is a human element behind it and I believe that wholeheartedly. Sensitivity is part of someone's feelings and I feel that ownership did not approach Rafael with the sense of seeing the human side of this situation. It was miscommunicated and mismanaged without a doubt.

  14. Paying a player $300 million he should be willing to park cars , sell hot dogs if I want him to. Former players have no say in the operation of a organization day to day. Give me a break. F'ing divas !!!

  15. This is incredibly refreshing. He is the only person in this organization that has been willing to speak the truth! The rest of them lie through their teeth with every word they say

  16. Thank you Pedro! This is exactly how sox nation feels. Hate this new owner/front office or at least all of their decision, approach and demeanor. Turned one of the most respected organization into a red flag in free agency. Oh and of course Devers is willing to play first in SF. Forget about the money, gotta approach the person in a geniune way. Shit is an absolute botch job again…

  17. Good interview and great answers from Pedro. He hit it right on the head and didn't sugar coat the relationship with players and the front office at all. I think going forward there is a lot of work to be done to make sure this organization stops feeling like a business and players feeling like financial transactions and faceless cogs in the machine to their bosses. Unfortunately I think FSG only sees them as that and as a result we the fans suffer the most.
