Full quote:

[Question asked to LeBron]: “You won again in 2012 and took a break in 2016 and 2020 — both were still gold medal years for the U.S. You played again and won gold again in Paris (in 2024).

Afterward, you said it doesn’t seem probable that you’d play in the 2028 Summer Olympics, which is in your adopted hometown of Los Angeles. Any update on that?”

[LeBron’s response to the question]: “Nothing has changed. Where we at, man, 2025 right now? (Laughs) Nah, nothing has changed.

I mean, if I had to look at it right now through a microscope, I would say that, me being able to support Team USA for the rest of my life — that’s for sure. But me actually going on and playing, I don’t see it happening.”

  1. I know it’s obvious he wouldn’t play in the Olympics again, but even as a non-American, this sucks to see confirmed.

Bron’s my favourite player and it shows retirement is relatively near.

  2. Bron Steph and KD had basically the storybook ending last summer. It would be dumb to play again and risk ruining that especially with other countries surpassing the US soon.

  3. He’s a freak of nature but let’s take stock and realise he’d be 43 years old

  4. I’d still bet on the 2028 Olympics being his swan song. Even if he’s a ceremonial starter, they’d make a roster spot for him to go out on top.

This next season takes him to 2026. Not crazy to think he goes for another two years after that.

  5. I truly don’t see him joining the roster just to play from the bench. The only caveat is that he might want to be a part of US winning in the states. Winning at home is special in its own way.

  6. Should retire and qualify for 3v3 with Bronny and Bryce. Genuinely would have a better shot at gold than a team led by Jimmer.

  7. The absolute peak end of his international career would he him, post retirement, along with some other randoms, absolutely crushing whatever team USA is at that point. Whip them into shape at 43 years old. Assuming they need it 😅

  8. He’d be way too old i think it’s pretty obvious he wouldn’t do it. Only way I see it happening is if Bronny takes leaps and bounds and somehow makes the Olympic roster. Don’t think he’d want to pass up to opportunity to be a father son gold medalist duo. Doubt it’d happen but that’d be something fun to see.

  9. It was a treat to have him in Paris. I could totally see him being a team ambassador. Or just play threes with his sons.

  10. I bet the team from last year but in their 50s, still would have won the 92 Olympics. Field is too competitive now though

  11. This was the last ride man. Bron, KD, Steph. Our childhood heroes went out and got us one more gold

  12. Athletes usually like to go until they know they can’t. I definitely don’t think any of those 3 should play in the Olympics again, but that’s because they’ll be too old, not because the last one was perfect.

  13. This sub in 2030:

He did well in 28 and we got the gold. Hes still averaging 22, I could see 2032.

  14. We need to change our lens on this

Why is he talking like it’s his decision. We do not WANT him at the next Olympics. Even if it’s not his intention, anything he’s part of becomes the ‘omg I can’t believe he’s doing this at ____years old’ show.

Its tired. For goodness sake let the young guys shine

  15. He’ll be missed. My bold prediction is that even with home court, the US does not win Gold in 2028.

We’ve seen it the last few years with the rest of the world catching up and most of the greats that have carried the US to Gold the last few years will be retired. No Curry, LeBron, CP3, Harden, Durant. Davis will be 35. Who knows how Tatum will return from injury. Embiid will be 34 and is oft injured.

So 2028 will be headlined by some combination of Anthony Edwards, Cooper Flagg, J Dub, Brunson, and Haliburton. That’s a good team, but not miles better than the competition.

It’s going to happen one of these years, and I just have a gut feeling it will be 2028.

  16. Even if he plays 10 minutes a game in LA 2028 off the bench, he would be an asset, let’s be real here.

The only real question mark is who’s gonna carry team USA with KD and Curry not really likely to be there in 3 years.

  17. Just give him an honorary spot like Tyrese Haliburton.

    (Sorry Pacers fans, too soon?)

  18. He just won the last one. James, Durant, and Steph won’t be at the next one for sure and they closed that chapter on a fantastic win against the host country with Steph doing the night night which will be immortalized in Olympic basketball history.
