welcome to the desert and inside Chase Field in Phoenix we’ve got Father’s Day baseball it’s the San Diego Padres’s and the Arizona Diamondbacks first pitch coming at you right after the break [Music] [Applause] [Applause] about to get started here starting in this one Eduardo Rodriguez and Chris he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough yeah he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners put his team in a position to win a ball game so we know he’s prepared we know this guy is a competitor and we’ll watch how he works in this one and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr now a drag bunt third base side and he picks it up in foul territory tatis waits and ball one boo tatis is so athletic he probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood next offering upstairs [Music] lifted in the air right center field carol sizing this one up and there’s one down as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup and this is a dangerous group Chris top to bottom loaded with players who can barrel up the baseball a lot of high exit velocities and that all results in a club that’s leading the league in slugging percentage right now and boo that that means the pitchers got to be ready from the very first pitch of each and every at bat because these hitters they’re ready to jump all over you and they’ve got the swing speed the velocity through the zone however you want to measure it to hit the ball hard and hit it a long way there’s no question this is a lineup that is built to win in today’s modern game of baseball and he starts his afternoon off right with a double you know I was watching his rounds during batting practice today so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel go back up the middle and the other way sometimes when you step in the box during the game you get a little anxious and you get away from that but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation here’s Manny Machado gets the call it’s 0 and one [Music] man at second fly ball down the line carol on his way over makes the grab and there’s two gone the throw to third and the throw’s offline safe at third in fourth center Jackson so the go-ahead run in scoring position jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s swings through that oh and one that one in dirt one and one arise at third with two away rolled softly but that goes foul the one two and that one cutting but missing down low punch him out spoils that one and it remains two and two and a pitch got him swinging so no runs here on a base hit no errors and one left and now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat no score back here at Chase Field yeah the right-hander with the good curve ball Randy Vasquez and Singi it’s unique these days but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy yeah Boogie he doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out he knows he needs to miss barrels get some soft contact let the defense do work behind him and I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look up they’re in line for a quality start we’ll see what he’s gotten this one next pitch upstairs [Music] just missed and that’s a strike out front pulls that one foul now it’s three and two keeps the bat going with a foul ball three and two payoff pitch now a highf fly ball out to left center cheeks on the move to the alley nabs it one up one down time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup and perhaps part of the game plan is to get into the bullpit as early as possible they’re facing a staff that’s blown a lot of games in the later innings booan as hitters you’re aware of that but you don’t want to become too relaxed in way too late in the ball game because you never know what could happen on any given day but with that said even if you fall behind early you’ve got a lot of confidence that this game will not be over until that final out swing and a highf fly ball left field carous it and there’s two down that is third short stop two down base is empty next up in the Diamondbacks Heraldo Purdomo perdomo getting the start at shortstop hitting third in the lineup and he was born in the Dominican Republic swing and a ball lifted left field cheeks he makes the grab that is the inning scoreless after one top of the second there’s Gavin Sheets now left hand bat rodriguez back to work yeah big swing and a miss threw that fast ball right by him slightly elevated that’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder whips it to Smith and a quick out number one 96ated Sander Bogarts and here comes Sander Bogarts he’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases chris misses off the play and that’s ball one one out base is empty swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow right field makes the grab for the second out two outs base is empty now here’s Jake Croninworth check swing and he went strike one one popped up to the left into foul ground and that’s a foul ball two outs that misses the zone and the count is one and two no score here in the second and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again and they’ll do it again two down nobody on foul ball still a one and two count knocks that one away and we’ll do it again also really good at bat what I like about this guy his bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches fouled off and they’ll do it again fouls it off still one and two [Music] battling here as he fouls it away about to see the 11th pitch of the bat here come on back good job to fight that one off this is something else running that pitch count off i can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for the pitcher to have so many good pitches spoiled off like this that missed by a lot two balls two strikes the count swing and a miss struck him out nothing doing there for the Friars we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score back here in the desert we head to the bottom of the second here’s Josh Naylor hitter Josh Miller swinging a ground ball up the middle throws to first and quickly one away in the second third Jason Suarez up to hit now good power not great in the OBP department and a foul ball pitch misses there and now it’s even one and one james Kingsley working the plate kingsley is pretty well respected around the league yeah when you talk to players I think consistently he is one of the guys you hear compliments about players appreciate the job he does back there yeah that’s kind of all you can ask for really just a fair chance to go out and have success swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line tatis sizes this one up two down 36 leftielder here’s Guriel fell off to a great start he’s really cruising out there on the mound he’s got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches that could set him up to go deep into this game misses inside ball one and another ball [Music] fast ball is outside that’s in for a strike man this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today two high it’s ball four and that’s their first base runner of the game well two out walks are never good especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout but he’s still in a good spot he’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order pave Smith in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike guriel off of first with two away [Music] fought off foul the O2 and that one is lifted in the air merrill under this one he’s got it and that is the third out of the inning one left for Arizona we’ll move to the third with no score top half of the third inning here’s the veteran shortstop jose Glacius and the first pitch misses for ball one in there at the knees i got a ball one strike into center thomas running hard to get it brings it in with a nice running grab and there’s one away they trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run and we saw it right there that’s a player you want patrolling center field someone who can attack the ball off the bat martine Maldonado in now takes ball one off the plate so two balls and no strikes top of the third no score swing and a high-fly ball right field carol calls it in two away now batting right Fernando so the San Diego batting order turns over now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr flyed to right his first time outside corner there’s a strike he’s got into a really good rhythm set down seven in a row he just wants to get the baseball and deliver it as quickly as possible keep the momentum going fly ball center field he’s got it and that is out number three home half of the third coming up no score and welcome back to the ballpark set for the bottom of the third here’s the center fielder Alec Thomas that’s in there strike one well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count one and one [Applause] ball to strike that one missed and he lays down a bunt and it goes just foul blind drive that’s a base hit into right field so aboard to start the inning didn’t exactly square that one off but sometimes you don’t have to he didn’t exactly connect with this one as he met it out front but he still put a decent enough swing on it to get it into the outfield you know and if you finish the swing and just extend your follow through you’re going to run into Knox just like that jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks and that misses and that’s ball one ball one no strike and a curve misses outside [Music] vasquez checks on first and he’s back in easily nobody out runner at first next offering is in for a strike inside just missed corbin Carroll in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here [Music] and a 3-1 on the way and that one fouled off with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here foul we’ll see another payoff pitch definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open goes down looking this is Corbin Carol fly to left his first time ground [Music] that one pushed to the left and fouled two outs so a foul ball makes it one and two gets a piece and stays alive and misses inside really good take especially with two strikes and it remains two and two i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up and down on strikes he goes and good work there as he gets a one two three padres’s go down quietly and we’re still knotted at zero back here at Chase Field now here’s the switch hitting power threat Catel Marte catel Marte right down to shoot that’s strike one well I think that pitch surprised all of us right down the middle doesn’t get a swing not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that check swing did he go yes he did one ball two strikes [Music] up the middle oh look at the stop throw to first nicely done for the out well you can see right there he looks very comfortable going to the backhand nice diving stop gets up to complete the play that’ll fire the team up for sure now it’s the shortstop peraldo Purdomo hard hit left field base hit so a man aboard now with one away [Music] dominant performance for him today boo just two hits allowed so far no runs across either and he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced so I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much man at first with one gone josh N runner on the go yeah that’s fouled off perdomo leads off first with one away ground ball right side could be two there’s one and their second double play of the day will end the fourth one hit in the inning but no one left we played four we’re tied nothing nothing back here in the desert new inning getting started here’s the left fielder Gavin Sheets rodriguez back to work that clips a corner you know these Padres’s just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore you have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something but it just hasn’t happened for him yet next pitch is downstairs good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone and that’s downed away misses outside and now it’s three and two and that one hammered that’s back there and that one is out of here his 12th of the season it’s one- nothing he kept swinging and it paid off well that was a battle Boo and he just kept taking his cuts finally squared one up looks like this guy was looking out over the plate but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball so direct to the pitch absolutely blasted out of this ballpark now here’s Sander Bogart style and that misses and it’s one and0 and another ball well that pitch not even close it’s a two- count now he can’t be overaggressive he’s got to make sure that pitch is right on a T for him line to left guriel handles the chance and there’s one down [Music] jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s struck out swinging his first time croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way one out bases empty and a run in and we’re in the top of the fifth outside with a breaking ball that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one just off the inside edge he hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day he’s in danger of walking his first batter right here that’s a bullet but it goes foul [Music] one down base is empty foul ball and it remains a full count good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat outside and that is ball four that’s a great at bat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now 0 for one with a fly out to center started after it appeal to first no swing gary Simmons with the call man at first one away the change up missing and the count two activity in the Arizona bullpen kevin Ginkle up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello thompson getting loose as well check swing he went too far and it’s a strike two strikes and now two and two squirts away a little bit and ball four to a board [Music] now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen eduardo Rodriguez done for the afternoon only two hits allowed for him so a great effort and we’ll be back after a quick break to tell you about the new arm new pitcher on now Kevin Gle still pretty early in the ball game so this bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him two on one out martine Maldonado up to hit swings and misses and it’s nothing in two strike and misses struck him out blew the express right by his back for strike three came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got them up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there jiz in the box now takes strike one swinging a miss at a slider he got away with one there but he knows he can’t get into that spot very often against a guy like this two on two outs whoa over his head to the back stop and two in scoring position now thanks to that wild pitch no trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch [Music] croninworth at third Glaciius on at second with two down here’s a high chopper suarez tosses to first and they take care of Tatis for the out they limit the damage here the Padres’s get one in the inning with a solo blast it’s now one- nothing you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the inning au Heno Suarez up to the plate now well these fans definitely want to get involved in the game all it’s going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on drill to right way back there and that is gone home run number 20 on the year and we are tied it’s one he only needed one swing to square it up not wasting any time in that at that aggressive and it paid off always scary for a pitcher when a guy can take a fast ball down the middle and hit it to the opposite field no holes in a swing like that and that time that ball was hit see already his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane and even when you don’t get it great it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder and now it’s going to be Peyton Smith brings it in and there’s one down now Betty the center Alec Thomas alec Thomas now one for one with a single so far i’m going edge the zone call the strike 4 and one getting a little frustrated with the strike zone fouled off he was late one away tie game go ahead run stands at first last half of inning number five and he couldn’t hold back he’s rung up on strikes well they clearly didn’t recognize that curveball out of the hand and tried to check the swing just went around too far and you’re hoping the umpire maybe missed it and they bail you out and that one fouled off [Music] and that drops in for a strike and a swing and a miss and he’s registered three Ks in this one dembacks get one on the solo jack all even now at 1-1 it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show and we’re back start of the six john Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off Luis Az way high there ball one meanwhile activity in the bullpen shelby Miller up and throwing for manager Troy Lavello beaks also throwing [Music] swing and a ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit man aboard on the leadoff single once you get the ball by the pitcher there’s a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground balls so a nice job to use that big hole who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts just missed way to lay off that pitch down and fouled off ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit thomas quickly gets it back in runner holds it second but they’ve got something going on here well that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over really nice job staying up the middle with his approach he didn’t try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield a chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run first and second one out next for the Padres’s Gavin baseball in this one just one extra base hit for him so they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park that makes it really difficult to generate runs swing and a miss as he pitcher they don’t care if they fall behind 01 ball that’s out swinging a miss and it’s one and two this game has been so tight feels like the next team to score will win it fights it off he’ll see another two down nobody on here in the bottom of the six and there’s a ball well he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here too too he’s already seen the curve ball a couple of corner wow just a beautiful back door slider right there if you got any chance of hitting that pitch you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy count you’re taking all the way see if they’ll walk you there’s the strike three and one all tied up here in the top half of inning number seven fouls one away and now three and two highf fly ball right field carol settles under this one heather’s two down up next for the Martine Maldonado the next up for the Padres’s pitch misses inside ball one swing and oh the bat went flying there well we talk about throwing the hands but not the bat man you want to hold on to that thing and can see his teammates over there if he doesn’t come through with the knock he’s going to get some business when he goes back to the dugout lifted in the air down the left side guriel trying to get there makes the catch and that’ll do it [Music] back here in the desert now it’s the DH Josh Naylor and downstairs hitter in the seventh now that is third base Suarez au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks he’s already homered in this game sliced hard but fouled right through there for a strike next telling you what pitcher and catcher on the same page right now leftielder Lordis Goreel Jr and it’s Lordis Goreel Jr the walk and he’s also singled just missed and that one is inside well usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200 he’s put himself in a really good spot and there’s a strike on the outside corner griel gets a piece still two and two after the foul ball two out space is empty [Music] next offering popped in the air right field tatis pulls it down and that will end the inning jaylen Beaks into the game this southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters number 68 Fernando Tatiz Jr to hit here 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out first pitch misses well a mistake right here could untie this ball game if you’re the pitcher out there you just want to be a little more cautious and another ball the Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen number 24 up and throwing for roll into the bottom of the eighth Wii Peralta he’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate and now Paving Smith taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but it’s some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level there’s the strike [Applause] right through there for a strike swinging a miss that one in the dirt got him one away on the strike out well that bat seemed to be over as soon as it started three pitch strikeout you’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off extend that at bat [Music] tory Lavell making a move for a new bat gabrielle Moreno one out the base is empty for him that’s a strike and it’s 0 and one [Music] one down base is empty line drive base hit one of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there one down runner at first now up next for Arizona Jose Herrera out in front and fouled to the left side and Ellen is inside ball one [Music] on the ground to third machado now a jump throw and he can’t come up with it and no shot to get him at first there’s two aboard two consecutive base hits for these guys here really important second they get one double play what a twin killing to end the inning they made it look easy but it started with a nice feed to the second base from the shortstop perfect turn and they’re out of this jam number 13 into the game as a defensive sub now and he’ll take over in center here’s the center fielder Jackson Merrill one for three beaks back to work and that’s a little high home plate umpires try to tighten things up a little bit tap foul at the plate there’s the strike 95 of that one one ball two straight pitch misses and the count now even up helpful gavin Sheets in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here ball four he whooped it and that keeps things going that’s a nice at bat and a great take on 32 probably could have gone either way in that spot around position i tell you what pitcher is very grateful for that substitution now at first base and pinch running for the Padres’s brandon Lockidge brandon Lockage here’s Xander Bulgars ball one no in the dirt blocked but no advance that’s ball one rift but a curls foul line drive and it stays fair runner around third on his way to the plate he’ll score big RBI for him right there ripped that one down the line and kept it bare and even when you hit it that far out front you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory and that right there was perfect one out runner at second jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s swanging a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play one-run game here in the top of the ninth next offering misses down and away activity in the Arizona bullpen taylor Scott up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello thompson getting cranked up as well [Music] and a foul ball next offering way upstairs one out and a runner at second here in the top of the ninth rip right field that’s back there that one way back and it’s gone jake Croninworth will touch them all home run number five on the season it’s 4-1 that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the bat knew what pitch he wanted to hit spent on some other pitches in this at bat was very patient and it paid off [Music] now the pen for the Diamondbacks Ryan Thompson and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year typically at least one in innings so he’ll be tough to get to jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s lays out but he can’t squeeze it the flip to the pitcher is late and the defense comes away with nothing well from the time you’re a little leager you’re taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full sprint through the base regardless of how you hit it and he didn’t make great contact but the effort was there and he earns the base hit here’s the catcher to hit martin Maldonado 0 for
