apple Podcast Spotify wherever you uh like to get your podcast i’m Evan Marinowski that’s Connor Ryan connor what is up evan I’m uh I’m doing okay uh it was a long night writing about one Raphael Devas getting traded to the San Francisco Giants i don’t just write about hockey over at boston.com uh I write about pretty much anything that is percolating or that is the the hot button subject in the Boston sports sphere so my focus the last day has been about Raphael Bevers so I’m very tired if I I ramble even more than usual on this podcast please forgive me but I am I’m fighting through it but otherwise I’m doing well how you doing doing great i did read your story on Monday morning about uh sort of uh the how we got to this point how the Red Sox got to this point uh which was really fun it was like dragging my balls through like glass looking at it’s like I want to be like uh Matthew McConna and Interstellar when he’s like no like banging on the thing watching those early uh spring training uh videos and you had no idea it was going to go off the rails as as bad as it did i know it was like all those months of being like “Yeah trade them.” And then it’s like “Wait no no no wait a minute what did I I didn’t mean it i didn’t mean it um wasn’t the only trade to happen this weekend in Boston yeah wasn’t the only trade let’s get to the biggest trade of the weekend bruins on Friday night nice little you know Friday night at like 56 o’clock uh they acquire Victor Sodstrom uh from the Chicago Blackhawks for Ryan Mast and a 20257th quick background on Sodstrom he was the 11th overall pick in 2019 5’11 184 pounds right shot defenseman he’s an 01 so he’s 24 years old uh played last year in Sweden did he win did I see right he won Swedish defenseman of the year in his league last year yeah he SHL defenseman of the year the Singing Award I believe but yeah he did win it nine goals 37 points 49 games um has had very has had some small stints in the NHL his biggest was in 22 23 played 30 games for the Arizona Coyotes nine assists still looking no he does have an NHL goal i’ll give him that he does have a goal back in 2020 2021 um has produced pretty good returns in the AHL uh Ryan Mass someone who you know never could seem to crack the NHL lineup here kind of big and slow um look do I think Victor Sodestrom becomes a you know a top four stalwart for the Bruins no i did see I think it was on like a Blackhawks podcast i don’t know the person and I forget the guy’s name so forgive me but he’s talking about how Sodtorm will probably never be an NHL defenseman he can’t keep up with the pace this or that um I think this was sort of taking a flyer for taking a flyer deal i I don’t think this is I I see people being like well what are the Bruins doing you’re taking a flyer on a former first and you do need help on the right side on D and you could use some more offense back there not saying this guy’s going to give it to you but this gives you an option signed a two-way deal you see what you got in training camp maybe he is just a guy you stick in Providence i don’t know but I I’m not I’m not mad about this i think it’s fine yeah i think you’re throwing a dot at the dot board right and it’s a guy that it falls into I think Don Sweeny’s MO right with finding a former player at a you know depressed value or a depressed asset who has a first round pick pedigree does not mean that uh they’re all a sudden going to take a huge step forward uh but you’ve seen it even like taking the flyer on Oliver Walstrom didn’t work out but former a first round pick like you want to see if you can maybe unearth a little bit more value out of a player like that so I think it was Mark Diver who posted on X that he’s heard from uh some talent evaluators that you know Sodtorm’s not a big body at 5’11 but kind of has a little bit of a two-way game maybe he could be like a a third pairing guy if all goes well for his game so at that point if it’s a 24 year old player with you know the resume he’s had he’s done well over in Sweden i know there’s a big discrepancy in talent between the NHL and the SHL but still a guy that has produced over there it’s you kind of put it in the same vein as you know when the if let’s say the Bruins signed a 25year-old like player in the KHL who’s putting up like a point per game or something like that there’s no guarantee that that player is going to be Art Tammy Paneran but you take a flyer on a player like that the same way as you know I don’t think Sodorm is going to be the next Gustaf Forsling right where it’s this guy kind of comes out of nowhere goes around to two different teams then hits his stride and becomes a legit top you know 15 player 15 D in the NHL like Borsling is i don’t see that being the case i don’t see him being a top four D but if he can be you know a guy that maybe becomes your seventh D or best case becomes a guy that can stabilize the third pairing plays his game kind of almost like a I almost think he kind of reminds me a little bit of uh someone like Zaboral and I know that’s not someone people want to hear about but I think you were like click yeah I know but in terms of you know during that stretch thing before especially that knee injury he suffered with the Bruins where he was kind of getting a pretty good run there and you know wasn’t flashy but I think we described him right as an offensive lineman like you don’t really notice him but he but he’s kind of making he’s kind of making those smart simple plays moving the puck not putting himself in danger and if that’s what you’re looking for in a third pairing D um there could be some value there so again I’m not running with you know the narratives of what Sodorm could be but I think for the Bruins if you’re you know trying to give yourself options on the right side of your defense which is an area that is probably I think maybe underrated in terms of what they need to address this off season um bringing a guy at that age with that talent level who did well over in Europe um for what is again a seventh round pick and a prospect in Ryan Mass who I think was a healthy scratch in all of Providence’s playoff games i don’t see any harm in you know rolling the dice there and see what you have in a player like that it’s funny because I was reading Monday morning in the Athletic Cory Prawman did a story of like what every organization’s biggest positional need is and he actually put the Bruins at D and I think it’s something we don’t talk enough about because that franchise center is still you know long awaited and that has to they have to find them at some point and they’re also pretty thin on the wings too it’s another area that’s kind of looked over but like they’re good at the NHL level on D but this is one thing they ran into this past year you know if anyone in your six gets hurt or got hurt there wasn’t a lot coming up you know it’s like Wtherspoon or Ian Mitchell you haven’t really drafted many D i drafted Grenwald last year but he’s still in college he projects to be a prospect but like he’s a he’s still a ways away so um it’s a you know you’re taking a flyer i’d also say a the Bruins love Don Sweeney loves his former first round picks as you alluded to Walstrom and there have been some others and I’ll also give them this they’re pretty good at finding value where maybe others are overlooking i mean I always look at like a Morgan Geeky a Pavle Zaka and those are the big examples and I don’t expect Sodesttorm to be that but even look at like an Andrew Peak i mean Andrew Peak has been a good solid like steady right shot defenseman not saying that Sodtostrom’s going to be that i’m not super familiar with Sodom’s game but they’ve been You’re not watching SHL highlights i haven’t I haven’t watched enough SHL highlights to give you a full breakdown of his game but like they’ve been okay with that so I’m not going to discount like hey this kid’s a former first maybe he stinks maybe he’s nothing maybe he’s literally just a Providence Bruin and hey you need guys to fill out your P Bruins roster you need guys in the AHL to play down there too um or he’s someone as you said who becomes a sixth defenseman becomes a fourth defenseman i don’t know um my guess is he doesn’t reach that but they’ve been okay at finding those kinds of uh value ads at different points so I don’t think this you know I I did I was kind of surprised not surprised but you see people just kind of like getting mad at it on Twitter and I’m like you getting all hot and bothered over this i don’t like I don’t see the the the pain in this like Ryan Mast is a nice was not going to be part of the equation right yeah like might be a okay AHL player that seems like he’s all he’s going to be as you said he was scratched for all of Providence’s playoff games so like yeah take the Flyer like I think Chicago’s miss taking that two and Chicago gets seventh out of it so you know you have enough picks i don’t think that 20257th is going to be you know going to make or break you although now that seventh round pick is going to be like freaking Pavl Datsuk so yeah probably something like that i will say pick in the fifth round exactly i will say Don Sween has got to be pumped that Craig Brezlo is now like the most hated man and I I think we agree that I think some of the the anger towards Don Sween can kind of get overblown at times we’re not trying to make excuses but we do think it kind of lean into the dramatic angle i think I don’t know if like the Marshian stuff especially now is becoming a a narrative that I don’t think we all can agree with in terms of the Bruins getting fleeced or it being a terrible trade or all those kinds of things i feel like it’s been popping up on Twitter a lot the last couple days but I have to imagine Don Sweeny’s probably like “Woo got Craig Brezlo taking the L’s now.” And I think that one’s a little bit more justified in terms of how that’s been going for the Red Sox yeah uh that I mean the equivalent for the the Red Bruins equivalent would be trading PostnO that’s what that would be right yeah for like I don’t know like more cap space and but like for like who would be the returner it’ be like trading like David Posnock for like Casey Middlestat and I’m trying to just think of like other guys yeah but like not but like not like a legit you know like the best prospects trevor Countar like Yeah yeah exactly those kinds of player like you know sorry to Casey Middle that felt like a that felt like a low hit but for for what the value is Casey Middlead is not David no and I would also say like at least not not to I’m not defending the Bruin i I am completely against trading post let’s let’s let’s put that out there but at least in the NHL you have a hard cap where it’s like all right you have 11 million now to play with there’s no such thing in the MLB right i mean I’m not an expert on the MLB salary structure but it seems like the Dodgers paying granted for years and years and years but you haven’t paying you know show 700 million and things like that so that would be the equivalent is if you dealt past that would be the the and you’re trying to get Kevin McKenna or Ivar or Sternberg or one of those other guys next year 26 but we’re let’s stop talking about trading David Pos because it’s not going to happen and now I’m getting stressed all over again after oh shoot now I’m feeling like willing it into the universe yeah considering you’re usually the the the bearer of bad news Evan where it was literally September like what if Montgomery got fired we’re like don’t talk about that Evan that’s not going to happen what do you know and and we were like what draft Jimmy Hagens yeah exactly we speaking telling you man it’s gonna do numbers if that happens so I don’t know what we got to we got to plot our next I’ve been saying Mitch Marner maybe that people would be pissed oh this this city would be pissed i I don’t know people should go listen to it it was pucks with hags on Friday and uh Arlington uh high school’s head coach John Missouri who uh by the way it is the leading point getter at Princeton uh Princeton for college hockey not Hobie Baker it’s John Missouri and he’s a character he’s a great listen and I was I was I you know I knew I had Hags there who of course Hags is not going to like Mitch Martner and I know I had John who’s an old school hockey mind who is going to despise Mitch Martner so I’m like I have to like stoke the flames here so of course I brought it up and uh Sean said he goes “Mana’s not a winner.” And it was just like “That would be like the the You have to clip that you have to clip that and let’s do like an EDM remix of that when the Brains do sign uh when they do sign him on July 1st.” It would be unbelievable and I just I I had to point it out i was like “This is awesome.” This is exactly why I brought up Mitch Martyr because it’s going to elicit that kind of response so I got to really We got to cook up our next uh provocation for it to come true um speaking of good things our friends over at Prize Picks do rumor this weekend little little something something uh JJ Pou it was Stefan Nosen um I believe it was on his substack i want to give proper credit here the E the L Monsters is Isn’t Stefan Nosen isn’t he a player no stefon Rosner steen is a player i was like I was like what’s he [ __ ] doing he’s he’s tweeting [ __ ] out now is he bored he’s a rewarder during the offse he tweeting his group chat like what’s Stephan Mason doing jesus you should see the the You should see the scoops that uh that Bubbles are putting out firing off tweets what’s Loco What’s Loco brewing up over That’s right loco would be a perfect guy yeah who’s a new insider lou give me one stefan Nosen clips soon as I heard that I was like wait I know I know his first name but I know it’s definitely not Oh boy well that’s that uh why even talk about it at this point i think we’ve we’ve uh we’ve done our thing stefan Rostner or Roster I apologize to Stefan um at the Lmon Monster it’d be funny if Stefon Nosen had a substack that would be depressing he’s just in the press box like in his full gear he just typing the gloves on hey you got to stay you got to stay active when you’re when you’re scratched i mean come on grind never stops don’t keep your feet moving um but uh Steon Rosner tweets or excuse me writes “My god um I’ve been told that the Boston Bruins have inquired about New York Islanders forward John Gabriel Pio.” Now I hate to say it i did not subscribe to it so I didn’t read the I can’t read that’s all I got i got one graph and it’s hypocritical coming from someone who writes for a Yes you have to subscribe for so I again I a I am really not trying to be disrespect i apologize um but that’s all I need to see yeah so let’s just take that at face value jg Pou has $5 million a one year left on his deal um go subscribe to the El Monster would you please everybody i may not have but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t um but anyway 5 million AAV left on his uh on his contract uh 32 years old coming off a very good offensive season i’m going to go no on JG Pou by the way it’s crazy only 32 cuz I remember I thought he was like 37 yeah I remember him in that Ottawa series uh in 2017 and him he was a stud um and he’s had some huge performances over the years especially in the playoffs like didn’t he light up the Rangers that same it was that year I think that he like completely lit up he always I feel like he always does well like in the playoffs and stuff like that he was a pain in the ass for the Bruins like feels like on multiple stretches of games not just in the playoffs yeah he’s a winner jj Pjo is a winner um but again coming off you know 42 points in 79 games that’s his best point total since 2015 16 uh he’s been with the Islanders the past six years again one year left 5 million to me I’m a no it’s nothing against Pujo it’s literally just you have so many middle six uh centers already lindol Zaka Geeky um I’m forgetting someone else middlestat um here’s my other thing though like my big takeaway from this and again we’ll see you know how serious these trade talks are I think it’s getting more and more likely they trade one of the top six centers uh or middle six centers they have like the more I see Zaka’s name out there in trade rumors is it a middle stat um you know geeky they’re going to resign but like is it Zaka and that’s where like if they’re looking at PJO and what he can bring are they it seems to me like maybe they’re getting serious because you can’t have PJO and Middlestat and Kiki and Lindol and Zaka i think if this is true like they are it looks like they’re trending towards trading a middle six center yeah i I think with Po like I really like the player but it it all goes back to like what type of team and what is like the Bruins threeyear plan right if the Bruins let’s say like you know they had the 23 24 season where they exceeded expectations and they go into this year and they build off of it as we expected not saying they’re going in the conference finals whatever but they’re in the playoff team they’re you know they don’t have a drop off swimman looks great then I could see like all right you add you build off of that team moving forward you got the cap space of a guy like JG PO makes sense as like a a shortterm addition can be a really good third line center um and even if like he made the right moves this off seasonason where let’s say you’re replacing Charlie Coyle with JG Pio in a short-term kind of role I like what he can bring i just don’t know if he fits in with now like the path that the Bruins have set forward where it’s going to be more of a a longer retool or rebuild whatever you want to call it like yeah I think J Bou would help this team and maybe it falls in line with hey this is going to be a pretty young team maybe it’s bringing in a guy that can play a good role but is also a bit of a veteran and I I do think that is something that maybe is lost a little bit but it also depends on how much of that you’re allocating in terms of resources like unless you maybe you’re just viewing Peasio as a one-year steady veteran presence helps out a lot of these other younger centermen especially like a Potra a Minton i could see that maybe but also I don’t want to give up assets for a guy that you know if you’re looking for that veteran player just to be there for a year or two I’d rather you do what you did two off seasons ago and find the 35 36 year old veteran who can be here for a year or two has value but you’re also not giving up assets and also you know it’s not someone who’s counting five million against the books either so um yeah if the Bruins were in a different spot where they were more competitive or were trying to really kind of write the ship uh in a quicker fashion then a guy like PJO in the next year or two makes sense like it’s the same with you know Jonathan Marcho who’s what 34 35 wouldn’t be surprised if Nashville is trying to dump that contract i like Maraso as a player but he doesn’t fit in with what the Bruins are going to be at right now so I know Pasio’s a little bit younger but I kind of view those types of players in the same grouping where like him but I don’t know if he fits where the team is right now nor would I be wanting to give up assets to bring in a guy like Pasio for you know what is going to be the end result this year maybe make the playoffs and maybe PJO is a 45 50 point player helps you out but what’s he going to be after that you gonna give a guy who’s 33 a long-term deal moving forward when you should be again leaning into the younger players like I just don’t know if it meshes where the Bruins are right now you mentioned uh you know you don’t want to give up assets to get him and I agree i I don’t want to either like whether it’s you know if it’s anything above a you know fourth round pick if it’s prospects but I would also say like I don’t want him blocking prospects from getting into the lineup i mean you already have sort of this you have so and we’ve we you know we I just talked about it we talked about it at length you have so many middle six centers you have so many kind of guys that are sort of in that middle tier of players of in this lineup you have guys like Mitten and Patra on the outside that are going to need to get in and deserve playing time or at least need to earn it but you can’t fully block it out um and you also have guys like Murculaf too who are going to want chances to get in the lineup and things like that so with the direction they’re headed in yeah I agree with you i don’t think now you know if they traded Zaka and you know I don’t I I don’t see them trading middle stat too like I can’t see them doing both um you know maybe there is another spot and we’ve talked about it before like you’re right like we have talked about hey you know this team needs more veterans that was something that was uh dire you know super missing from last year didn’t have guys like Van Reamike and Shaterk and Maroon and as much as maybe they didn’t help out as much as you would have hoped they did on the ice they certainly were legitimate presences in the locker room and mattered so um you know maybe PJO brings that but I’m with you i I’m not giving up assets for this um if you want to sign a guy like that in free agency for a million or two per year have at it um but I’m I’m all set on uh giving up real assets maybe that the price is only six like a sixth round pick but you’re still paying five million against the cap so like you’re still taking up cap space um even though it is uh only for a single year uh before we get into some NHL draft talk because it’s that time of the year we got to do all that um if you want to hear more and more NHL draft talk if you want to hear a lot of our great stuff make sure to go subscribe to Burns Ringside on YouTube um for all of our great content all of our stupid moments like we had about five minutes ago um and what what an off the rails who knew JG Peio was going to have the most chaotic sequence I think of the offseason so far on this podcast marian getting dealt uh was handled better than that uh so that’s a that’s a good thing u but make sure to go subscribe to Burns Ringside all of CLNS’s uh YouTube channels whether it’s uh the main ones CLNS Media Network Celtics All Access uh Patriots Press Pass make sure to go do that um and if you want to go subscribe if you like to just listen to us uh subscribe wherever you get your podcast over at Apple Podcast Spotify Podbean wherever it is so make sure to go do all of that so um Craig Button longtime um scout longtime big NHL voice uh came out with his final uh NHL draft rankings which is now where we’re at all the experts are putting out their final uh list so I will read the top 11 because I would say that’s most relevant for the Bruins i haven’t even read this yet so I’m actually very curious this is this is news to you so number one Roger McQueen no oh my gosh okay number one is Matthew Schaefer number two is Michael Misa number three is Anton Frenell number four is Porter Martone number five is Roger McQueen number six is Brady Martin number seven is Caleb Denier number eight is James Haggins number nine is Rad Murka number 10 is Victor Ecklund and there’s a reason I chose number 11 to finish off at because number 11 is Jake O’Brien so Bruins are picking seventh and according to Craig Button’s rankings here at least the seventh best player is Caleb Denier which you should be doing like cartwheels and back flips and freaking everything if you get him I think um but he has McQueen high he has Brady Martin high i mean I guess my biggest takeaway from this is I think March you know everyone has different rankings literally like look at all the different rankings everybody has different top 10s you and I and the mock draft we’re putting out later this week are completely different are really I would say yeah completely different in our top 10 um every you look across every expert even at the Athletic with Wheeler and Proudman theirs are different from each other buttons is different every kind of you know elite prospects everybody’s different yeah so you can’t go off just one but like if we are going to go off what Craig Button’s saying and Craig Button is a respected experienced uh scout and voice and I have talent marton’s probably gone in the top six which I don’t think is like a huge shock we both had him going high but then you get into like McQueen and Martin and if he thinks high of McQueen and Martin then others probably do too um does that shake up a does that shake up the top seven or top six so then you get one of Denya or Hagens or do you feel more confident not not off just Craig’s list but more people thinking it do you feel more confident taking Brady Martin or Roger McQueen at seven yeah i I do think that Craig Button is a guy that also is very very plugged in with a lot of other talent evaluators and scouts he even like I think when you look at a lot of the mock drafts from like a month or two ago he was kind of an outlier in terms of he had like Hagens dropping i think he had like Bernie Mottton rising before a lot of other people were uh he was still pretty high on McQueen which feels like the consensus is that even with the injuries a lot of like scouts you hear from say that if he was healthy he’d be like a top four pick like that’s kind of was the consensus for a lot of this year and then I think if he came back at the end of the season from that back injury and hit his stride again I feel like he probably would be right back in a conversation but he really didn’t it was pretty much a lost season after he had that back uh issue um which I think really hurt his stock but if he is healthy now yeah he’s a guy that I think could be a top five pick if a team is confident he’s going to be healthy because again there’s only so many guys that could be a Ryan Getsoff type of you know 63 6’4 uh 65 playmaking centerman like he can be and Martins does seem a guy that just is going to be a top six pick like I just feel like even if the ceiling isn’t as high he’s a guy that I think you know what you’re going to get right away and that’s a guy I think you can win with especially if you’re a team that’s just looking maybe for more of that ancillary piece as opposed to like the franchise topline player i know that maybe is foolish of allocating such a high draft pick on that type of player but if he is your 2C for the future and he’s a wrecking ball and a guy that you know is part of the fabric of whatever your new foundation is going to be I can see why a lot of teams would be really smitten with a guy like uh Brady Martin so it does Yeah that’s a great Yeah um but I do think that yeah you see what Button is saying what he has been saying about and I don’t think he’s really been that high on Jacob Bryant he hasn’t been that high on Hagens of him dropping um not taking just his this one you know uh mock draft or prospect ranking as gospel right but it does I think once again raise the potential for this to be a really up and down you know draft night in terms of where guys are going to go and I think it does once again raise the potential for if Martin jumps up if a team really loves Roger McQueen and his conference is going to be healthy it raises the possibility yeah of one of um Denoier or Hagens being there at number seven for you which two kind of different players but two players that I think if you got you’d be very happy for different reasons like I feel like Denier’s floor is so high that again kind of like Martin uh I feel like you know it’s uh Martin is probably the the more hyped prospect right now but na the whole like you know story on him was 2C 65 points physical big body at 6’2 you’re going to love what he can bring i think you take that if you’re the Bruins even if maybe he’s not a topline center and then Hagens has question marks but if he hits he is a top line 80 point highlight reel centerman like and if one of those guys is there for you you will take it i love Brady Martin but if he’s going to jump up and it means one of those two guys is there for the taking for the Bruins not bad yeah because the big regret is that if you’re at seven and Martin’s available you don’t take him and then he becomes a wrecking ball in the Sam Bennett or Yeah it’s like man or even better than Sam Bennett it’s like holy crap like what a terrible decision not taking him martin’s interesting because like Brady Martin to me has the momentum at the perfect time he has momentum you know April May June right up to the draft hagens had momentum you know in the summer and fall of last year and like Denoier had momentum in like March and April and like it’s all about sort of when you hit your your stride for the draft and kind of how your stock is going in the queen stock’s jumping up too where he’s healthy now yeah mcqueen yeah with the combine all that stuff so and that’s the thing and I think with like Martin um you know if you’re the Bruins like to argue for Martin and I’m I’m not on board yet with taking Martin at seven but to argue in favor of that you know you’re getting a likely a leader a franchise culture setting guy at seven um doesn’t have a very high offensive ceiling which does sort of scare me but you do have two seconds and you have two first next year and you have two first the year after and now granted you can get that guy later in the draft so that’s sort of why I’m not like dying for this but I think there is that argument definitely internally of like we have other kicks at this now it might not be as high as seven but if they came out of their interviews with Martin and were like this is the guy we want like in the foxhole with us um then maybe that’s the direction that they go where it’s like all right you know we’re going to take a culture setting guy at seven i don’t care that he’s maybe not going to be a 70 point a year guy even if he’s you know 40 50 maybe 60 at the highest we’ll take it um the other thing on like Hagens uh is as I just kind of mentioned with his stock being you know not low but sort of stagnant i think it’s also low because of the playoffs right like you see a Sam Bennett is likely going to win Khan Smite if the it’s been the best it’s been the best news for Men is that Sam Bennett has just been apeshit this playoff run bingo and so teams want it’s a copycat league we say that all the time teams want that kind of guy and what that means is they look at a James Hagens and go “Oh he’s all speed you know he’s all speed he’s all skill all hands all this known as maybe more of a little bit of a perimeter player well we’re going to pass on that we’re going to go with Brady Martin or we’re going to go with the Roger McQueen type.” That’s good news for you at seven if you can get a James Higgins at seven like if that leads to him falling to you then yeah yep run right to the run you know they’re not doing they’re not on stage but run right up and freaking pick him they they hack the Zoom thing they just like take over the They take over the screen sharing higgins it’s James Higgins we’re taking James Higgins like and and that to me is where you know if you’re the Bruins I think you’re probably not getting the guy whose stock is super high i don’t think you’re getting like the hyped up guy at seven unless Brady Martin falls to you but you might get a guy like a Denoier who’s ranked seventh uh for Craig Button or James Hagens who’s ranked eighth who it’s like man all year those are the guys we wanted the Bruins to get and yes recent performances boost these other guys up but those are the guys over the long term that you’re going to want so you could I mean you could end up getting or you should end up getting a really good player at seven and I think this ranking and a lot of other rankings show that yeah I think honestly it’s being at number seven is a tough spot for the Bruins right where you are you know waiting for more of the draft board to fall your way in order to have a legitimate shot at maybe a guy like NYA or uh Hagens or someone like that but I do think that it’s also now becoming I think a good prompt to have because if McQueen is healthy and again I have question marks over him but if he is healthy you do like the potential of like he has topline potential you know franchise centerman uh capabilities there and even a guy like Bernie Mottton who again as you said maybe not as high on but I think could be a really useful player take any one of those uh types of players or Denoier or Higgins i think you’re getting a useful player and I think it’s it’s encouraging that I think Mottton and McQueen stock are uh are both respectively rising because it’s giving you an opportunity to add a blue chip type of talent to this team now they’re all don’t have the same ceilings but I think if it’s Brady Mutton if it’s McQueen if it’s Hagens Denway you’re going to get someone that ideally is going to be helping your team in the next couple years and I think especially with like Hagens if he is there at seven I I spoke about this with uh Tai Anderson on the latest poke to bear we did where I think Tai has had some reservations with Hagens as like is he a guy that you know is that same level of uh you know former top number one pick like a Cellini or even like an Adam Fantilia one of those guys like maybe he’s not that but like I’d maybe have those questions if I’m going into picking him like three through five right yes if he’s at seven you take that player if he’s at seven and all a sudden he maybe isn’t what exactly you’re expecting but he’s a 65 point hyper skilled second line uh centerman wing something like that that’s good value for number seven right so I think also if he is going to fall there just in terms of measuring the value you you take a guy like Hagens a former number one consensus lock at seven it’s not like he’s like dropped because of um character issues or he like was hurt or the the play was maybe uh underwhelming it’s just I don’t think he exceeded the very high expectations he didn’t have a 60point season he wasn’t a celibbrini or someone like that Kyle Connor but still a point per game guy in Hockey East is still very impressive and to your point these are at seven i think if you’re Bruins fans you’re very pumped he’s going to have like a 55 point year this next year at BC he wasn’t Will Smith his freshman year who by the way I acquired in my Bruins franchise mode and I’ve rebuilt the Bruins down the middle so maybe it’s time to hire me as GM uh there’s another thing though i was watching NHL Draft Pros on YouTube they’re a great channel go check them out um they did a mock draft with a bunch of different um you know people who scout and uh you know people have different um hockey websites and they did a mock draft and you know each person picked for each team and uh the fir you know the first two picks were Schaefer and Misa and then it was like Frenell Denoier Hagens O’Brien and um am I skipping another center no I think that was everybody but it was the Bruins at seven really were like down to Martone um Martin and McQueen and I was like huh I never really considered that angle where like there’s a there’s a world in which you know your Hagens Denier Frenell and O’Brien are all gone by seven we know Misa and Schaefer are likely to but those other four we assume one of them will be available to the Bruins seven but what if it isn’t and I was like huh do you go with Porter Martone who is a you know looks like a potential Corey Perry in his prime like big strong playmaking right-winger but he’s a wing or do you go with Martin who is sort of as we talked about a culture you know um wrecking ball type of center who’s probably in your middle six or do you take a swing on McQueen and like I think if that was the case I’d have a hard time not going Marton like if Martone is there and those guys are all gone O’Brien Denier Hagens Fendel are all gone marton’s pretty damn good man and I know he’s not a center i know he’s not a center but like if that but he has a potential to be a top line yeah like I don’t I don’t think that’s going to happen i don’t think I think Martone is gone early but if that were the case like I’d have a tough time not picking Martone or do you trade back do you go you know what we’re going to pick ninth you know we’ll trade with Buffalo and they can move up or something like that’s where you get into that territory because you do need a center so bad but Porter Martone looks like a guy who’s hard to pass on yeah i mean it’s almost like you know I don’t think Porter Martone is I think people look at his size like oh he’s a new the new Kachchuck i wouldn’t call him that player but big body that can kind of mix things up and kind of be a little bit grimy but that’s not his main mo so it’s like all right if it’s between Brady Mountain and Marton it’s all right who would you rather have prime Sam Bennett good player or prime Cory Perry like 07 Cory Perry cory Perry i’ll take Cory Perry yeah I’ll take Cory Perry that’s a good way to put it that’s a great way to put it um Connor what can the people look Love listening and watching great show guys 👍👍
Remember they traded their captain ray bourque. He went to Colorado and won the cup. Now they trade their captain again ( Marchand) and he wins a cup lol.
E.Lindholm, Potsy, Minten and Faksa or N.Sturm from FA is the C's i'm going with down the middle for this season. They gotta see what Potsy can do in a top 6 role with good wingers and I doubt they want to limit Minten to the 4C because he has more of an offensive upside.
Get the fellas Desnoyers, O'Brain, McQueen or I wouldn't even mind them taking Martone if he somehow drops that low.
Well let's see
What 1c or 2c in the team could they trade? None
Why? The Bruins don't have a real 1c or 2c
And if anyone says Pavel Zacha that's nuts. Zacha failed miserably in NJ as a Top 6 center, it's why he got traded out of there
Here in Boston he's had far more success at wing than center. Zacha is also soft, inconsistent & far too weak on the puck to be a Tp 6 center
And then there's this….
Look at Pavel Zacha's beyond lousy career post season numbers when he's been asked to be a Top 6 center or wing for Boston:
1 goal
A putrid 45% at the face-off dot
A crappy shooting% 2.6%
So every center named Zacha, Middlestadtt, Poitras and Elias Lindholm are all middle six centers
And no, Elias Lindholm is not a Top 6 center anymore either. Proof?
He wasn't that in Vancouver two years ago. He wasn't that last year for Boston. His days as a Top 6 player are over
Elias Lindholm is an above average, two way center that can put up 40ish points now. His strengths are face-offs, defensive play, forechecking and backchecking. That is the profile of a a middle, 6 center people
So yes, it's possible any of the Bruins middle 6 centers could get traded because outside of Beecher & Kastelic who are bottom 6 centers, the only centers Boston has on their big club roster and even throughout the minors are all middle 6 or bottom 6 centers
The Bruins actually don't have any real Top 6 centers or wings (or Top 4 D for that matter) in their entire prospect pool.
This is kind of EXACTLY why their Farm System has been ranked in toilet for all 10 years of Don Sweeney's tenure as GM and it's the Bruins Farm System is universally ranked EVERYWHERE today between 28th to 32nd and dead last in the entire NHL
And no, Fraser Minten is a middle six guy too, he has never been projected as a Top 6 player at any level.
Some scouts have projected Will Zellers as a Top 6 player other scouts say middle 6. As he's the Bruins only real, young offensive forward that has any chance of becoming a real Top 6 player one day, he might get traded too because any GM looking at Boston's crap farm system would likely ask for Zellers in return in any trade for a 1c or 2c, as he's the ONLY forward in Boston's lousy farm system any other GM in the NHL would likely give up anything of value for as he's the ONLY forward in their crap farm system that may actually be a Top 6 player in the NHL one day
So again, when your organization at every level only has middle 6 and bottom 6 centers to offer in any trades, It's safe to assume some of their middle 6 centers might be traded
Seems kind of o logical really
U guys drive me crazy . We criticized Sweeney for always being safe in drafting , so we now want Martin because he is physical. Drafting this high u draft point producers. I want haggans., McQueen, martone. All over Martin or O’Brien. U swing for a franchise player . Not draft safe in the top 10
Pasta will be begging for a trade next spring.
You can get a player like Martin with later picks. They won't have a top 10 pick for years, they need to get talent with #7
This draft’s top two talents have been consistent across almost every public ranking. After that, it really does appear to be VERY unpredictable for which draftees will be selected #3 through #10.
I hope the Bruins examine those (roughly) seven prospects, and prioritize whichever guys have a good mix of “high floor” and “high ceiling” traits. The B’s franchise (hopefully) won’t be drafting again in the top ten anytime soon. They cannot afford to whiff on a “high ceiling, low floor” type, and yet they also can’t be overly shy with a “low ceiling, high floor” type, either.
I’m not sure which players best fit the “medium ceiling, medium floor” description I’m hoping for, but I do hope that’s who Sweeney selects.
Do the bruins even have middle 6 centers lol. Lindholm and Zacha both 3rd line centers. I guess that’s technically middle six but considering where they slot in the lineup it feels like they might as well be fourth liners. .
