joined Chris Townsend and Steve Sachs to talk about what he’s been learning from Brent Rooker regarding leadership well I watch Rook and CS for the most part every day i mean I just kind of watch how they handle things how they handle situations you know their body language and situations and you know I kind of like you said I kind of just learn from it and be like “All right so when it’s my turn when I’m the older vet type of guy how how will I handle my team and how will I handle situations?” And you know Rook’s been doing an amazing job know K’s been doing an amazing job you know all they preach is positivity in the locker rooms and in the dugout so you know they never want us to get feel like we’re going getting too down on ourselves you know even though we might be going through a rough patch you know that we’re still a good team and we still believe that we’re going to come out of this and you know we still believe that we can make a playoff push you know that’s still not out of our heads you can watch the full interview at youtube.com/athletics or listen at athletics.com all right time for the matchup of the day and for Mason Miller he has pitched in three of the last four games so it’ll be interesting as this thing gets later in the ball game if the Athletics have the lead will we see Mason Miller again or is it going to be Tyler Ferguson is it going to be Michael Kelly who will close this thing out yeah we’re going to see but hey if Mason Miller is going to go backto back days let’s get him in there no doubt i would love to best best arm on the team you got to get the best arm in as much as you possibly can uh quickly you talked to JP Sears your good friend you saw the look you saw the eyes yeah so fortunately last night uh you know walking to my car my car my rental car is right by JP’s and he had this look in his eye and I am very confident that JP is going to have a good game because he looked at me and said “Did you see that?” And I said “I’ve seen that look before.” So this guy is getting ready for his game the night before mentally before he even gets into his car and that’s something I love to see yeah we can talk about all the data we want and all the analytics body language plays a huge part in success yeah so once I saw that look I I felt good about what he’s going to go out there and do today and it’s really tough because the last time he he took on this Astros team I mean you look at the numbers it it’s rough it was three and a third nine runs it was the worst outing of his career yeah and I think about for bouncing back for him he really just wants to get ahead of these pitchers he’s got the sweeper he’s got the good four seam at the top of the zone i think for him he needs to bounce back and do what he does well get ahead of these hitters and just trust his stuff yeah keep the ball down and that’s always the one thing when the ball’s flying out of the yard all you got to look to see is where where the ball was pitched right you keep it down that is your friend all righty A’s and Astros game two of the four game series is next and don’t forget we’ll talk to you after the ball game time for athletic baseball and your home for tower high power and untouchable heat and two slider down goes and Miller is fired up now for the call of today’s game here’s Ken Corak and Johnny Dasco and we have baseball tonight in West Sacramento game two of the series and the Astros after the drama in the bottom of the ninth bing last night hi again everyone ken Corak with Johnny Dasco Chris Townsman Chris Kerry Jessica Kleinman and the commander it is great to have you with us mason Miller pitched a flawless top of the ninth last night the game was tied going to the bottom half base had a runner on base and Nick B hit a blast that was 447 ft up at the top of the burm and into the trees out there well beyond the right field fence and the A’s won the first game of the series over the Astros 3 to one a have won four straight and by beating the Astros last night that broke the Astros fivegame winning streak and the A’s will try to keep it together tonight behind the left-hander JP Sears who is 5 and five in a 508 erra and meanwhile it’s interesting because Jason Alexander who was with the A’s earlier this year then the A’s let him go he lashed on with Houston now all the injuries to the Astros rotation and Alexander who had been pitched ing in the Coast League at Sugarland the Astros Trip AAA affiliate well he’s going to make his Astros debut and he’ll start the game tonight against the Green and Gold mostly night games on this home stand 7:05 tomorrow 7:05 on Thursday and the Cleveland Guardians come in for three beginning on Friday night weather conditions are perfect blue skies above the fisherinvestments.com investing in securities involves the risk of loss [Music] back here at the ballpark in West Sacramento getting ready for game two of this four game set second game of this sevengame home stand the A’s Louis or A’s defeating I say the Astros in a walk-off homer by Nick Ker the Astros losing the ball game to fall 41 and 31 a winning that ball game 3 to1 with the win the A’s brought the record a 30 and 44 in the starting lineup for the Astros in this game tonight jeremy Pena will lead things off he was 0 for four last night he’s the shortstop isak Paredes is the third baseman batting second jose Alt three home runs against the A’s so far this year he’s the designated hitter batting third yo Diaz is the catcher he’s in the cleanup spot christian Walker to bat fifth and play first base jake Meyers in that six slot he’s in center field cam Smith’s the right fielder he’s batting seventh mauricio Dubon he’s at second base batting eighth and Cooper Hmel is the left fielder and he is batting ninth for the A’s Lawrence Butler the right fielder will lead things off it’ll be Jacob Wilson to bat second he’s the shortstop tyler Soderstroms in left field batting third third and spent Rooker in the cleanup spot and he is the designated hitter last night’s hero Nick Curts will bat fifth and play first base maxy is at third base batting sixth austin Wins is batting seventh he’s doing the catching luis Uri is the second baseman batting eighth and batting ninth with center fielder Denzel Clark and the pitching matchup presented by Premier Pools and Spas jason Alexander gets the call for the Houston Astros snow record year of 18 so far this year jp Sears 5 and5 5.08 RA and as we mentioned earlier Sears having a tough start at Houston May the 27th three in the third 10 hits and nine runs toughest start of his career and JP Sears poised and ready to make up for that here tonight this copyrighted broadcast presented by Authority of the Athletics may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form and the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of the athletics so it’s the A’s and the Astros don’t forget tomorrow pitching matchup will feature left-hander Valdez against the right-hander Luis Severin so great match up tomorrow night but first things first Alexander and Sears and now for the playbyplay once again here’s Ken in the first inning of tonight’s game Johnny is sponsored by Hobblet Family dealerships hobblet has it no hassle no pressure ever that is true the Astros are 41 and 31 the A’s are 30 and 44 fourth meeting this year between the two ball clubs the Astros lead the series 2 to1 a the home whites and the Astros the road grade series in search of win number six and here’s Jeremy PΓ±ena who homerred against Sears in that start that Johnny mentioned back in May he stands in batting 329 homers 34 RBI southpaw from the Citadel delivers it’s Powell left of the bag at third 89Β° at first pitch almost the highest of the season here temperature so far was 91 the game for the A against the Yankees balls in one strike to MishapΓ±ena and he swings and misses now it’s going and two is with the gloves they have Nick Curts at first luis Buras at second jacob Wilson’s at short max is the third austin wins behind the plate so in left Clark in center Butler in right Lawrence looking right up into the sun here’s the O2 pitch by JP is on the way high now one and two on the left side of the infield wilson and Muny are in the shade the right side those guys are in the sun that time of the year not quite the longest day of the year but we’re gaining on it we’re getting close yeah four days away right so the one two pitchers delivers taking just two and two derek Thomas is the plate umpire mike Molinsky at first emil Jimenez at second doug Edings at third getings had his hands full last night here’s the two on the way dribble foul left to third and the counts two and two jp faced the Angels on Wednesday we said with Todd Emerson on Johnny’s pregame show he was lights out for the first five innings he wound up going five and a third and four runs or four hits four hits two runs milwauke nine strikeouts last time for a ball three and two but the runs that he allowed came for the Angels part of a six run six run six bitting and two runs he allowed across the plate after he had left the game he has gone to the bullp now the 3-2 and that’s taken inside that’s the way our ball game begins as Tanya walks and that’ll bring up east for radio first five innings of that game last Wednesday in Southern California here is about two hits with no walk and eight strik that that tough Angels lineup so Parade is a 252 15 homers 42 RBI and Sears delivers and Paradis off to the right out of play in one has been nursing a hamstring injury left hamstring he ded in last night’s game but he’s back at third base here tonight alsing he’s on deck hitting Groom in right center the infield the pole and here’s the 01 delivery they can one ball one strike here is his two and three lifetime against the Astros in nine games including eight starts now his 1-1 pitch he works from the third base side win sets up outside and the 1-1 pitch parade takes two and one that game in Houston May 27th albe him for two home runs up against her brow in that ball game now time is called by East Parade jp has not allowed a run in the first inning this year quietly the two-1 pitch esc parade is on the way and that’s taken for a strike two balls and two strikes on the 17th of June the Astros entered play in the American League West leading the Mariners by four and a half and the Rangers by five the Angels by 6 and a half and the A’s 12 but the KO have already won it was kind of a shocking development in the Bronx that the Angels have shut out the Yankees in backto back games saw that it was four nothing today and overall the Yankees have been shut out in their last three games here’s a move to first and a close play and diving back is East paraded for his uh Jeremy PΓ±ena almost caught him leaning he did fedes with a count of two and two center to park about three steps toward left and now the two two pitch here’s Ready at the belt and runner going a big jump is swung on b fouled toward third got holes two and two so the Angels improved their record of 35 and 37 and for the moment they’re six bats yankees have scored five runs since last Wednesday with that lineup all right the two against Parade is a pretty good battle here keep in the box and open stance runner not going and the pitch inside Carlos Stanton back today he went two for four clark about four steps toward left center now time is called by the catcher Austin wins he’s going to signal some of the defensive alignment to the middle infielders and thinking about being running on this 3-2 pitch beautiful bright sunshine in West Sacramento the breeze not great is back to the plate deep in the box a wide open stand about series is ready he holds runner goes 3-2 taking ball four so now nobody out in first and second and albe coming up start with 14 pitches already for Sears still vying for that first out double play ball here and out here but against the uh the usual reception as he’s announced as we said last night Ace fans have long memory they do indeed you know the it’s kind of died down for him throughout the league but not not with Ace fans no well Aluve homerred off Mitch Spence in the first inning last night two on nobody out just getting started top of the first no score ground ball foul down the left field line well the A’s and their fans remember all too well happened back in 17 and 18 no question a had a great club of course in 18 won the division the A’s were the wild card here’s the 01 pitch and Spence throws and now Sub takes high in the count one and one nobody out p is at second parade is at first you just don’t know about that 18th season now Johnny in retrospect could the A have won the division now one and one and the pitch is high to count two and one to Altuve next bench came inside to Altuve during Altuve’s second at bat last night and that led to a warning issued to both benches by the plate umpire Eding two and one and he takes the strike on the inside corner is trying to wiggle out of a jam here like you said he’s throwing a lot of pitches and more balls than strikes they lead from first and second and the two two fish down popped up right center playable butler from right is falling for makes the catch back to second goes back to first goes Paradis now Tuve flies out that’ll bring up Yiner Diaz’s catcher who’s batting .243 with nine homers and 30 RBI didn’t play last night victor Keratini got the start behind it for Joe Espada time original Rivercat right 2000 yeah you would know you’re like the resident historian i was not here in 2000 there is Diaz a right-handed hitter at top of the first no score the A look for two big one and up were you in Fresno in 20 i was but one thing I remember about the 2000 season a lot of people involved after the 37 game road trip they got every player in every uh front office staff leather uh Rivercat jackets on jackets is pretty cool on that long road trip yeah the one pitch he has the right-handed hitter and he hits the five ball to right angle toward the line butler is circling over he’s there in fair territory makes the catch and the runners get back battling back after the walk producing a couple of fly balls to right this one was caught about 20 ft fair by Butler two-way and that’ll bring up Christian Walker well they they had to had to take that long road trip because they were waiting for the ballpark to be ready that’s right 37 games on the road to start the year didn’t the Astros have something like that many years ago because one of the political conventions at the Astradome good question here’s Christian Walker right-handed hitter and it’s on the way and it’s taken high now one and0 you ever go to the Aspome he never set foot in the Astradome what was it like it was It was pretty cool because I don’t think it was that great a place but it was a famous place right i think the Astronome Cruz right capel so they count one and0 they lead from first and second top of the first no score and it’s on the way taken it’s not they tried to play on Nashville grass there for a while that didn’t work out two and0 Jeremy PΓ±a is second isak Paradus at first and here’s his two pitch little bit low now it’s 3 and 0 24 pitches for JP series three balls and no strike walker nine homers 33 RBI’s has some big years of course with the Dback right-handed hitter and the three 0 pitch and that’s a strike on the inside corner he has seasons with the long ball of 36 home runs and 33 fourth round pick of the Orioles back in 2012 christian Walker lots of room in left center slightly open stance and now the 3-1 pitch here it is that’s swung on line oh left side change up and Walker out in front they got five innings from Mitch Spence last night one of the keys of course Johnny the work of JT Kent yeah JT Kent was tremendous those three innings bullpen a little length last night right for sure that’s right they’ll be going the 3-2 with two out and here’s the pitch to Walker and that’s inside close pitch miss with a fast ball 94 well now they’re loaded for Jake Meyers hya at third paradus at second walker at first and Scott Emerson goes to the mound yeah and again he blanked the Astros in the sixth seventh and eighth innings and then Mason Miller worked the ninth got the wind because of the tremendous blast by Nick Bur 447 ft i guess since they began tracking this kind of stuff a decade ago it was the longest walk-off home run in a history oh wow fantastic what a what a blast it was i I’m like Scott Emerson i’m like Emo i thought it was longer than that 460 465 but yeah what a what a blast well here’s Myers base is loaded two outs top of the first no score that consultation on the mound was brought to you by Granite Expo grand Slam Savings with 10 Northern California locations graniteexpo.com with two out a right-handed hitter and that’s outside it’s 1 and0 the plate has been dancing around on JP Sears a guy who normally has great control and in fact he had only walked 14 entering tonight’s game for the year come set ready here’s a 1 pitch and that’s taken high and now it’s 2 and 0 i mean this is like it’s like totally out of character for Sir it really is and look he’s closing in on 30 pitches uh for the ball game so got to get Myers here you don’t want to just groove one either the two pitch with the bases loaded he’s ready kicks here it is and Meyers takes a strike on the inside corner change up two and one and like we’ve always said you don’t want to walk in a run but one is a lot better than giving up four mark about two steps towards left center butler and right straight up even stand right on top of the plate for Jake Meyers here’s this 2-1 pitch to Myers foul back out of play fast ball 93 jake Myers University of Nebraska 13th round pick for the Astros back in 17 had 13 home runs a year ago bed 219 one time Corn Husker back to the plate the count two and two number 32 will be on the way they lead from first second and third and the 2-2 delivery is swung on and wide up the middle diving and Wilson can’t get it two runs are going to score pΓ±ena scores paradus scores walker goes from first to third just a soft line drive and a broken bat up the middle great effort by Wilson diving to his left couldn’t corral it and the Astros take a two nothing lead well the walks are going to bite you Johnny yeah that’s tough and now Bido in the bullpen for the Athletics jp had 32 pitches for the night yeah here’s Cam Smith a right-handed hitter rbi’s 17 and 18 for Jake Meyers and the pitch by Steers here it is and Cam Smith swings and misses it’s 0 and one cam Smith one for four last night first round pick of the Cubs last year out of Florida State came over in the Kyle Tucker deal and the count 0 and one and here’s the pitch runner goes from first to foul back out of place smith was an infielder so not only is he making his major league debut after playing just 32 minor league games but he’s adapting to playing right field and he’s played well he has great athlete this is not unprecedented for Sears remember we talked about that game he had in 2023 a 37 pitch first inning and he was able to get through six innings 16 of 17 good memory by you why that sticks my head but no balls at two strikes two nothing Houston from first to third it’s on the way and that’s tied to Smith one and two you’re getting into a danger zone and managers and pitching coaches will say that when the starter gets to where Sears is 35 pitches in the first half you don’t like to see that at all of course here’s the one two he’s ready win sets up outside runner goes taken low throw to second base tag by Aras at second base is Jake Meyer two four in the ceiling finishes off the top of the first the Astros scored two with the A moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 smith courts one in right down the line it may go goes crazy folks goes crazy it’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three to two and a home run by the Wizards the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com face is coming in a brand new format join Lauren Gardner and Xavier Scruggs as they explore all the baseball buzz across social Wilson and Sodstone for the Green and Gold two nothing Houston and the pitch to Lawrence and that’s taken for a strike it’s 0 and one alexander appeared in four games in relief for the A’s earlier this year he was born in Windsor High School in Santa Rosa the 01 this one got ads right Cardinal Newman which is just in the northern part of town of Santa Rosa right off the 101 freeway you know it well used to live nearby yeah outfield toward left butler with 10 homers 30 RBI’s here it is taken inside at the count one and two Christian Walker’s at first Mauricio Juan at second at short parade is at third and Gerard Diaz behind the plate here’s the one two pitch taken low cooper Hmel is in left jake Myers in center cam Smith in right cuz nobody is immune and the Astros have really been hit awfully hard by the injury bug but they’re still in first place here’s the two fish to Lawrence died and two alexander is very much a synchro ball pitcher he had good numbers this year in the minor league at both stopped in the close here’s his 3-2 pitch warren swings and misses down he goes on a change up one away jacob Wilson coming up look at Jason’s numbers this year in five starts at Vegas he was 1 and0 with a 127 four games including three starts at Sugarland the Astros Trip AAA Ball Club 2 and0 a 174 you scratched up about 95 pitches in that last start yeah yeah exactly 94 the first pitch is a strike to Jacob Wilson and the count 0 and one jacob was hitless last night we haven’t said that very often here’s the 01 on the way they take inside they count one ball one strike two nothing Astros game two of this four game series again night games tomorrow and Thursday night games on Friday and Saturday with the Guardian one-1 pitch that load to Jacob two balls and one strike over the years alexander and he’s not alone in this Johnny but he’s spent a lot of time in PFA land but two on to Wilson jacob dribbles the foul at the plate he was called up initially by the A’s this year from TripleA in early April eventually was DFAD by the A designated for assignment on May 16th then he was claimed by the Astros three days later the two pitch and that’s outside 3 and2 his brother Scott long time lefty reliever in the big league sign back with the Giants oh three and two and here’s the pitch to Jacob going out fouled at the plate and the cat holes at three and two we mentioned this briefly on your pregame show that Joada and of course the Astros and Lance McCullers went on the IIL yesterday looking for a starting pitcher and they they felt that maybe the sinker for Alexander would play here now he misses just outside with a sweeper wilson walks the A’s have their first base runner and that’ll bring up Soders sod 254 homers 45 RBI’s have hit exactly two home runs in each of their last five games pitch to Tyler you take low and it’s one and0 that was part of your hot take today D it was with Downey and the commander it was hit eight consecutive multi-H homer games deep in right Smith left-handed hitter right-handed pitcher the 10 on the way swung on ad speed one and one alexander went undrafted after fishing in college with the Angels as free agent now the one-1 tied two and one this game so far has featured more balls than strikes so the count’s two and one tons of room in right center and the fish to tie there and that’s point got a high pop up on the infield and coming in for first walker toward the pitcher mound he’s there climbing the right slope of the mound and he makes the catch soda pops out two away that’ll bring up Rooker brent 275 homers 41 RBI’s really good June 321 and a 424 on base two nothing Houston here’s the pitch to Rooker and it’s the ground ball to short right to PΓ±ena flipped the easy way to second for the fourth and the inning is over after one it’s two nothing Astrog shed driver i love keep moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 smith courts one right down the line it may Go crazy folks go crazy it’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game behind the three to two and a home run by the Wizards catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com the big hits all the great brats you got to be kidding me and all the swagger relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour you better believe it quick pitch late nights and early mornings only on MLB Network let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term today’s phrase is oppo do you know what it means albo Taco a home run hit to the opposite field with Taco his 13th and it’s a one-run game expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com cam Smith leads it off for the Astros top of the second they lead two nothing over the Athletic right-handed hitter he was at the plate when Jake Myers was caught sealing for the last out of the top of the first and here’s the serious throws and that’s taken that’s the strike and no balls in one strike the second inning of tonight’s game is brought to you by American Furniture Galleries your familyowned furniture store since 1991 dp Sears delivers and the 01 pick and taken low and back to the screen one ball one strike he has never missed a start during his time with the A 32 starts from 23 32 starts last year he’s made every start this here’s the 1-1 that’s a high five ball left center going back from left soderstrom he’s at the track to the wall and it’s gone cam Smith homers to left center three nothing Houston the fourth home run of the year and of his major league career and three nothing Astros in the second well the wind not a factor but it definitely had some carry to it i thought on contact it may bring uh Soderstrom to the warning track 415 ft 101.5 off the bat here’s Mauricio Zabon here’s the pitch yeah well the ball really does carry the left Don a right-handed hitter and the one pitch on the way and that’s swung on line to left center up the alley that’s going to get down for a hit that’s going to go to the wall don is at first turning at first going to second and that’s a standup double and the Astros with the home run and a double and still nobody out here in the second and Gon who of course went to high school nearby here ringing two base hit he’s two for four in the series now and that’ll bring up Cooper Hmel you talk about DFA land this guy’s kind of the definition of that the embodiment and fish to Hmel and he would be excused if he didn’t really know on any given day what team he was with yeah no no question about but he I’ll tell you what he does like this ballpark he had for the cycled at this ballpark several years ago playing for which club reno Aces here’s the one pit and he takes inside and the count 2 and 0 well since the spring he was back then he was with the Astros he was DFA by them he lashed on with the Yankees then they released him then he went to Baltimore and he was DFAD by the Orioles twice then lashed on again with Houston two pitch to him and Humble has switched a batting right takes a strike it’s two and one a humbling business right it is you just hang in there like Humble did and here he is back in the big league look at Gusto last night his story incredible run it second three nothing Astros nobody out top of the second here’s fish to Hmel and he thinks inside actually literally took it he was hit by it what a nightmare for JP Sears and the A’s and so now it’s first to second still nobody out i want to see if they take a look at it right now as uh say they want to maybe challenge this and they’re not going to here’s [Music] Jeremy PΓ±ena just didn’t get him in the the left hand bottom of the left hand oh PΓ±ena walked leading off the game jp walked three in the first inning and two of them scored on the single to center by Meyers in this inning home run by Smith double by Dubon humble hit by a fish diaz looked for two on the infield ka can run a right-handed hitter he hits a ground ball a shot foul left of the bag at third it’s 0 and one good matchup here tomorrow night luis Severino for the A’s from Valdez for the Astros and then on Thursday night a battle of lefties jacob Lopez for the Ace colton Gordon for the Astros they lead from first and second and the 01 delivery and that’s swung on a foul tip is so and two and is back up throwing in the ace pen the Cleveland Guardians here on Friday night how about Steven Vote today i know he was the AL manager of the year last year but he’s been named to the coaching staff for the junior circuit for the Allstars saw that here’s the O2 pitch it’s on the way and that’s swung on a rocket to center clark coming on he’s there to make the catch and the runners get back denel got a great break that ball was drilled and Clark breaking over slightly toward left center one away now to bring up Issach Paredus he walked in the first is fun to watch he really is just the ground he covers the reads he gets no parades with Alu on deck and three nothing Houston right-handed hitter and here’s the stretch and series comes set and ready and delivers and parades taking outside in the count one ball and no strike parades with Tampa Bay has some big numbers especially back in 23 when he blasted 31 home runs here’s the one pitch to him and that’s outside of the count two and0 well the Astros have to be happy after losing Bregman you know and of course Bregman had a decent year last year not had a fantastic year but to see what Paradis has done in that that third base role yeah I think they came out of that really well i think you’re right the two old pitch you know a guy they had coveted for years apparently he’s going to hit 30 home runs if he’s healthy and especially in that ballpark our new set of the Crawford box the count three and 0 and JP might be on thin ice here set here’s the three-0 pitch it’s on the way and that’s taking a strike on the outside corner the lights are on but a long ways from taking effect guys above the park’s not a factor and the 3-1 pitch runners lead from first and second and it’s on popped out foul back at the plate denzo Clark out in center is still in the sun so three balls two strikes man 53 pitches 27 balls 26 strikes for Sears that time is called by Paradis now Tuve waiting on deck taps the plate with his bat jp working from the third base side and now here’s the 3-2 makes the catch and that is out number one that’ll bring up Cam Smith two for two with two home runs and after the Cleveland series finishes up on Sunday the A’s hit the road for a pretty long trip a three city road trip and the A’s get back home it’ll be Fourth of July weekend with the Giants in town here friday Saturday and Sunday a free night game raphael de and the Giants and Devers in the Giants lineup tonight he has a hit and an RBI he’s dhing 01 pitch is swung on at miss snowballs and two strikes mauricio Jivon is on deck one out nobody aboard base hit by Diaz home run by Walker and the pitch and that’s going on a bouncy ball toward third it’s tough play waiting for the hop muny’s got a quick go to first on a hop not in time smith can fly he beats it out nothing Muny could do one shopper towards third he had to wait for that last hop and by the time he threw the ball across he he bounced it about three or four times but didn’t really matter i mean once they once he waited on that second off she’s had no chance to get Smith to run 12 here’s Dubon who’s doubled and homerred the Astros have their eighth hit the breeze is picking up a little bit going toward left and Dubon against Vidau takes outside 1 and0 maras had a pretty long session with the local media before the game today then after that Johnny and we had a chance to chat with him and he went into some interesting things regarding the dealings with umpires recently especially regarding the rules one Opair just taken high two balls and no strikes i thought it was enlightening yeah for sure for instance last night and this was it was a critical time in the game when the A’s were batting in the bottom of the eighth inning one out the game or or two out and the game was tied up at 1-1 two pitch now and that’s taken low 3 and0 wilson was at first base and Sodestrom hit a line drive base hit to right cam Smith the right fielder threw into third but Wilson beat the throw and so from seeing the throw coming into third went to second base and initially was called safe three all pitches strike that was overturned on replay to end the inning and the ace had denied the a chance to take the lead but as we had mentioned at the time it looked like perhaps the umpires had called or the third base umpire last night Email Jimenez had called interference over third on Luis Gor runner going the pitch taken for ball four so Jabu is walk the second well they had after Wilson had rounded third he got kind of tangled up with Guor and they did interference on Gior and K came out of the dugout we wanted some clarification on that like why didn’t you grant Wilson home plate on the interference well the ruling was and Mark agreed with the ruling which was because Wilson was so close to third base Johnny that even without the interference he wouldn’t have scored if there had been a play on it josh we’re calling that right yep so that kind of negated the interference although there’s just a footnote to that here’s Cooper Hmel a switcher batting left and it’s taken for a strike the interference would have come into play if Wilson had tried to score and if he had been thrown out at that point and then he would have been allowed to go back to third base now the 01 pitch and it’s swung on a high popup that’s going to be foul straight back two on two runs in top of the fifth inning one out the Astros lead the A’s 7 nothing the other thing we asked Mark about and you were down there as well of course and two or three of the riders was that just wondering about the conference that the umpires had now time or pitch clock violation on Vidau i think so was cuz we were wondering we thought it was kind of unique because the plate umpire at the time Doug Eddings and initially we were pretty certain that he had worn both benches after Spence had come inside to inside for a ball and they count two balls and two strikes but before that became I guess official Johnny there was a conference all four umpires were out and meeting on the infield grass and K said he was not surprised by that it wasn’t the first time he had seen that two pitch inside three and two that is something that has been emphasized by Major League Baseball this year without making like a rash decision or a quick decision and they they want the homeplayed umpire to get together with the umpires and just you know how did you guys see it yeah Robert Ford said the same thing one of the Astros radio voices and you seen the same thing before the umpires getting together before actually shading those those warnings how did you guys perceive that did you think there was intent 3-2 pitch and that’s taken for a strike runner going and the throw to third is dropped by Muny and the back runner goes to second base so that’s going to be strike three hmel is out the throw to third and the A’s would have had an out for sure on Cam Smith but Mie dropped the throw throw is right on the bag and he had it in his mid then turning to try to play a tag down Johnny and the ball just popped out of his glove yeah I think he thought he had the ball in his glove when he tried to apply that tag so two out runners are second and third and the ruling is E5 and no stolen base and the pitch swung out of miss or either runner swung out of miss by Pena pena’s walked lined out and bounced out and here’s the 01 on the way by Baldo Bedau where he throws and it’s taken outside one ball one strike it’s always fun and educational to rehash some of those things on a night like last night absolutely there’s a lot going on last night here’s the one-1 pitch and taken those two balls in one strike and both Pseay and Scott Emerson were adamant that pass was not throwing at Altua oh the two seamer ran in on Jose the 2-1 delivery and Pena hit by that man hey the control on the part of the pitchers tonight has not been sterling so if Pena hit by a pitch it got him on the back side guess below his left hip I guess watching the replay Johnny three hit batsman and seven walks between the two clubs base is loaded it’s 7 nothing two out and here’s Paradus and Vidau goes to work on him and as Baldo throws it’s outside one and0 well command has always been an issue for Vidau one ball and no strike right now just trying to soak up some innings for the queen and gold one and0 right-handed hitter wide open stance and the fish by Vidau and that’s taken low and the count is two balls and no strike they lead from first second and third and with two away here’s the two pitch on the way and that’s a strike on the inside corner vido’s erra at the moment is 6.19 two balls in one strike clark shaded toward left center hitting room in right center and the 2-1 delivery and that’s swung on a shot into left for a base hit that’ll score two runs it’s nine to nothing and actually the play at the plate and the second run does score so it’s nine nothing on a base hit to left by Paradis and going from first to third is Jeremy PΓ±ena it’s nine nothing smith scored devon behind him scored the are thinking about a challenge at home plate and they will challenge it he didn’t you know it’s interesting that Javon never slid no he went in standing up and as a result they may have got him soderson with that catcher’s arm and the throw to the plate on a hop was just perfect and I don’t know if we’re going to win this one i hate to say this but in terms of just the tag itself and how close the play is at the plate game three of the 2001 American League Division series first thing I thought of with the tag going on the backside right exactly yep they didn’t have the G i apologize for bringing it up yeah why would you bring it up but yeah it’s uh Hogan Harris is up in the Ace bullpen it’s going to be tough to overturn it but for now it’s hoping that that would deny the Astros a second run for now it’s nine nothing in favor of Houston yeah was the two- run base hit to left by Parad sorry Kenny it It was the Jeter flip but you’re right the back the back the price did not slide there i think it’s going to be tough to get this overturned don’t you yep confirmed the runner safe so a two-run single by Parades it’s nine to nothing and here’s Alub so made it closer than I thought it was going to be he did he did a good throw from Tyler out there a good job charging and coming up throwing mark about a step toward left center straight up and right is Butler now Sub a right-handed hitter runners at first and third it’s a four-run inning and now the delivery and Aluve takes the strike these have had a bunch of close games and some awfully gut-wrenching losses this year Johnny but there have also been a ton of blowout now here’s the 01 and Bido throws now Tube is taking outside one ball one strike they had been pitching well and in fact entering today the starters for the previous eight games had a 135 erra one ball one strike and it’s on the way and now a line drive down the left field line that is going to be a foul ball just left of the foul line and overall the A’s pitchers in the last 11 games and during that time the A’s had gone seven and four the the team erra was 3.04 04 tonight’s been a tough night and it revolves around control that’s the first thing that K was asked about to reflect on the is good fishing recently he said throwing a lot of strikes now here’s the one two Ala ground ball left side taking it short wilson looks at second flips to first but the out the inning is over halfway through our ball game tonight after four and a half it’s all Houston they lead the A’s nine nothing experience a th Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term today’s phrase is oppo taco you know what it means oppo taco a home run hit to the opposite field and it’s a oneun game expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 smith courts went in right down the line it may go crazy folks go crazy it’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game behind the stone of three to two and a home run by the Wizards catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said to follow i really don’t know what to say i’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer we all did i mean it was a great game both teams played incredible it was a great game that’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911 hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com austin wins leads off for the Azar game goes to the bottom of the fifth it’s nine nothing Houston wins Aras and Clark for the athletics the fifth inning of today’s game is brought to you by Granite Expo grand Slam Savings with 10 Northern California locations graniteexpo.com austin wins takes inside for ball one the attendance is coming in 8,315 8315 wins swings they still have the Giants coming in later this year here’s the one two pitch it’s a ground ball third base red Sox come in later tigers have the best record in the league will be here in August single game tickets are available athletics.com/tick firework shows still to come one of a kind giveaways as well summertime baseball here’s Winds and a foul ball it’s one and two one ball and two strikes austin wins 0 for one the life of a backup catcher is the ones who pitch tie has been around a long time drafted by Baltimore the 10th round pick back in 13 he only had seven at bats in May let go by Cincy and the pitch is taken a little bit low full count three and two luis is on Zack and a great job by Jason Alexander his debut and he turns and deals a pit foul their face way he’s really giving them a lift you think of just starting pitching Johnny and they were going with a sixman rotation for a while but now McCullis is out but two guys that unless you were an an ardent follower of the Astros may not have known anything about this year yeah I mean they showing the list of the the current pitchers injured the long list 3-2 broken back comeback I think taken by Alexander runs halfway to first underhand flip in time but in their rotation now is kid named Colton Gordon who was an eighthround pick of the Astros back in 21 he faced the Twins on Friday that was his sixth major league startander Brandon Walter Gordon’s a lefty isn’t going to see him on Thursday that Brandon Walter and the pitch outside the count 1 and0 he had been drafted by the Red Sox and released by the Red Sox a year ago he made his third major league start on Sunday and those two guys are in the Astros quotation errors a line drive down the left field line off the bat of Uria one ball one strike nine nothing Houston they have nine hits the A’s have one hit and that was the line drive base hit to left by Rooker leading off in the fourth inning so it’s one and one actually both those guys are lefties that we mentioned jordan and Walter South one and two deep in the spotlight in the state’s capital that would reus back to the plate tap the plate with his bat and this will be a one-two pitch on the way and that’s point on popped up foul third base play a lot going on right now Johnny at the home of the Diamondbacks in Phoenix the annual MLB draft combine is taking place there the one two is outside two balls and two strikes yeah MLB Network interviewed Denzel Clark today talking about combine a little bit and Elvis was talking about it here’s the two pitch and is swung on a drive to left center a long run from center racing over a mile as he’s there and the center fielder makes the catch two away well they have over 300 ball players there and those eligible college players draft eligible and high school players and David Forest is down there with his uh a team of A’s that uh involved and and bunch of those people of course will be involved in the draft coming up in July strike on the inside corner no balls in one strike 0 and one and here’s the pitch yeah Denzel will take high one ball one strike it’s a great opportunity not only to watch the players because pitchers are out there throwing and a lot of defensive drills and obviously batting practice one-1 pitch bouncy ball left side rolling rolling bare hand paradus throws to first and a good play the A’s are out in the fifth and after five nine nothing Houston moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 smith courts went into right down the line it may go go crazy folks go crazy it’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three-2 and a home run by the wizard catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term today’s phrase is oppo taco do you know what it means oppo taco a home run hit to the opposite field with an oppo taco his 13th and it’s a one-run game expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following i really don’t know what to say i’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer we all did i mean it was a great game both teams played incredible it was a great game that’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911 hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com hogan Harris gets on for the A’s to pick up as we go to the sixth inning nothing Astros gerard Diaz leads off for Houston they have nine hits the A’s have just one hit in the sixth inning of tonight’s game is brought to you by American Furniture Galleries your familyowned furniture store since 1991 lights have taken full effect and the pitch back we’re talking you know briefly Johnny about the MLB draft combine downtown Phoenix and over 300 players there and beside the baseball activities the teams have the chance to meet one on-one with the players inside one ball one strike david Forest was here last night he said that you can submit a list of players you’d like to talk to and they submitted a list of around a dozen players that they they really like and you know would consider drafting or at least uh be in that pool of players that they would look at seriously and I think that’s a great aspect of the combine yeah great i mean that’s you know fascinating opportunity to talk to the guys see how much how well they would fit into the organization right get to know those guys and last year they were able to meet one-on-one with Gage Jump the left-handed pitcher from LSU and they eventually drafted him and the pitch is ball forward to Yiner Diaz so Harris comes out of the bullpen he walks Diaz nine nothing Astros and that’ll bring up Christian Walker and boy has the drafting of Gage jump paid off yeah just move it up quickly he’s going to pitch tomorrow for Midland against Tulsa in the Texas League here’s Walker a right-hander hitter homer last time up takes the strike on the inside corner gage jump in double A is 4-1 with a 105 ERA in high A at Lancing he was 4-1 with a 232 swung on popped a foul straight back no balls and two strikes he has been arguably the best pitcher in minor league baseball this year he is 8 and2 combined with a 165 RA here’s the O2 by Hogan that’s inside he was drafted last year by the A’s in the competitive balance B round he was the 73rd selection overall you wouldn’t think that he’s going to be in double A too much longer would you here’s the one two pitch and that’s taken on the inside corner ring him up the Walker is rung up and that’ll bring up Jake Meyer i would love to see what he could do uh in the Coast League he certainly has done well in a ball and double A so far for sure could he go a double AAA big leagues here’s Myers a right-handed hitter nine nothing Houston big curve for a strike and it’s 0 and one well the other thing that Kat mentioned today with the assembled media 01 pitch swung out a miss relates to the disengagement rule in other words if there are three disengagements during the course of one at bat it’s the equivalent of a ball obviously with a runner or runners on base the ball is in two strikes and Jake Meyers at the plate runner at first and the pitch and that’s taken inside and that happened with Jacob Lopez on the mound on Saturday in Kansas City and the umpires move there were two runners on base the umpires allowed after the third disengagement to allow the runners to move up both runners to move up here’s the one-two pitch inside after the game the umpires apologized to Cas they said “We got that wrong only the lead runner should be allowed to move up.” That’s right i didn’t I didn’t know that so it’s not it’s not strictly the equivalent of a Bach swung on and miss that’s right three Myers because with a Bach everybody moves right exactly i didn’t know that did you know that no I did not know that at all he said that the AMS actually came to him and said we we didn’t said we got it wrong so Cam Smith a right-handed hitter he is three for three with two homers and a single nine nothing Astros and a breaking ball hit foul i mean Cam Smith had three homers this year until tonight quite a night that’s interesting on that disengagement i missed it all together i thought that was a straight pock but it was disengagement only one runner allowed to move move up here’s the one two for the uh oh one pitch is strike you see part of the thinking is in allowing only one runner the lead runner is it would be because in that situation this engagement would involve the pitcher trying to get the lead runner here’s the delivery and it’s a swing and a ground ball to third wide to the bag a full spin muny throws to first the out good play we go to the bottom of the sixth it’s still a nine nothing Astros take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following i really don’t know what to say i’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer we all did i mean it was a great game both teams played incredible it was a great game that’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 9/11 your moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com the big hits all the great brass three to two and a home run by the Wizards catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com to the bottom of the six 9 nothing Houston the sixth inning of tonight’s game is brought to you by American Furniture Galleries your familyowned furniture store since 1991 top of the order for these they have just one hit off of Jason Alexander this become a pretty good story for the Astros alexander he’s in his mid30s now he has two lifetime major league wins now pop up on the infield top of the shortstop we’ll pause to allow our stations to identify themselves on Acecast the Athletics Radio Network and Talk 650 KST baker Wilson takes a strike in the outside corner no balls in one strike one out bottom of the sixth nine nothing Astros jacob is walking he was hit by a pitch and the delivery is swung on and popped up first base side back of first a trio of Astros devon the second base makes the catch the exact age of Jason Alexander is 32 he came up fish a little bit in 22 with the Brewers and that’s been it and so this year and he’s making his fifth appearance in the big leagues this year yeah he pitched well enough for the Angels get called up pitch really well in Salt Lake but never quite got the call up with the Angels yeah takes the ball one ball no strike the Cardinals beat the Cubs 12-2 that was in the That was the White Socks so the Cards beat the White Socks 12-2 and the Cubs beat the Brewers 5-3 atlanta a run in the bottom of the tent atlanta beat the Mets 5-4 now the two pitch that’s the ground ball right side part is right back hand Bond quickly throws to first in time and Alexander has made it look easy one hit and no runs through six against his former club after six nine nothing Houston take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following i really don’t know what to say i’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer we all did i mean it was a great game both teams played incredible it was a great game moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 smith courts one in right down the line it may go go crazy folks go crazy it’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three-2 and a home run by the Wizards the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com we played six innings in game two of this four game series the Astros on top of the A’s nine nothing seventh inning here’s Johnny De nine runs nine hits and no errors for the Astros no runs one hit one error for the A’s what a job by Jason Alexander in this game tonight as the right-hander 707 he’s pitching quite the ball game mauricio Duban will be the hitter against TJ McFarland so TJ takes over as he delivers the strike a sinker at the knees it’s nothing and one the new third baseman for the a Gioella the new shorts stop is Max Schuman as McFarland delivers off speed a little chopper on the left side roella will glove it on the run throw to first and not in time so Dubon has his third hit of the night the base hit for Dubon he has a single double and a homer been on base all four times so of course just getting coming off the aisle of course the first ball’s hit to him close play at first ivon just did beat it out here is Cooper Hmel switch hitter batting from the right side and the 10th hit for the Astros on the night as McFarland delivers that one chopped fouled at home plate super humble and it’s nothing and one this seventh inning brought to you by Hyundai of Vakavville northell’s home run hyundai Storless everywhere at I80 and Leisure Town Road farland at the belt playing the pitch break the ball into nicely right and it’s nothing and two on Cooper Hmel duban takes the lead the pitch that’s a breaking ball mrs low inside and it’s one to two the only hit for the A’s on the night the Rooker single the sharp single by Rooker to left that fourth inning that’s it i mean Alexander has struck out four walked two he’s hit a batter leftander to the plate the one-two pitch this is away it’s now two and two he’s produced nine ground ball outs alexander has as TJ to the plate the two- two pitch that’s shot foul for the A’s dugout remains at two balls and two strikes again tomorrow night game three of the four game set left-hander Amber Valdez Grizz been seven and four 3.10 Seino 26 4.47 there’s a fly ball to deep left center going back is Sonstrom at the wall and it is gone a two-run homer for Cooper Hmel it’s now 11 nothing Astros it is the fifth home run of the night for Houston and for his first home run as an Astro and RBI’s one and two 431 ft it was 101 off the bat now it’s been a nightmare night for the Athletics for Hmel it is his fourth career big league home he had three home runs for Arizona back in 2022 fix to Jeremy PΓ±ena misses one ball and no strikes 11 runs 11 hits and no errors for Houston no runs one hit and one error for the A’s as TK delivers and the pitch misses outside goes the screen it’s now two and0 Astros two in the first one in the second two in the fourth four in the fifth and two here in the seven nine walk also pitch is lined out and bounced out over to his fifth plate appearance as McFarland delivers a two- pitch is in there for and it’s now two and one on Thursday final game of the four game set it’s a night game left-hander Colton Gordon against left-hander Jacob Lopez big swung out of his big cut off change up it’s now two and two and the Astros they beat the A’s 11 to one at Dyken Field or Dy Park at uh in Houston as lefty delivers pitch that little dribbler up third base line and fouled making it to two and two the were swept a little two game set Houston the 27th and 28th 11 and five two and two the count on Jeremy Pena has McFarland at the plate two pitch that’s hit foul outside thirds at two and two the Astros fighting for their 42nd win try to move 11 teams over 500 they got hot toward the end of May rolling into June there’s the pit that’s a ground ball and two off short stops schuman up with it fires to first in time there is one away retired one down that’ll bring up Isach Pines the third baseman the Astros they were 22 and 21 back on the 15th of May they won 19 their last 29 right hand hitter and first pitch from the leftander misses one ball and no strikes 11 nothing Houston we’re in the top half of the seventh inning tameas shaded up the middle rees one for two with two walks and a run scored as pitch taken for a strike he’s on a fast ball and it’s one ball and one strike they won seven of their last 10 these are Salazar next here’s the one-1 pitch that swung on and popped up the second baseman is going out so is Schuman but the center fielder Clark will call them both off and make the catch and there are two away two outs in the seventh that’ll bring up the designated hitter that’ll bring up Salazar hitting for tube salazar getting some booze yeah he says I had nothing to do with anything left on left salazar is the catcher by Craig pitch is swung on and looped into left field for a base hit so Salazar first pitch swinging singles the other way and that’ll bring up Yiner Diaz the catcher so here is Diaz Salazar his 11th career hit he’s one for five this year john Nukem left-hander loosening up at the bullpen with the athletics so runner around first that’s the 12th hit for Houston he’s going to go with a position player defensively see that Farland at the belt now to the plate the pitch bats bounced up the middle schuman will scoop it up he’ll go the long way to first in time and the inning is over so two runs on the two-run homer by Hmel two runs three hits one left we’re through six and a half it’s the Astros 11 let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term today’s phrase is oppo taco do you know what it means oppo taco a home run hit to the opposite field with an oppo taco his 13th and it’s a one-run game expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 smith courts went into right down the line it may go crazy folks go crazy it’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three-2 and a home run by the Wizards catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com take a guessing which baseball player or man said the following i really don’t know what to say i’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer we all did i mean it was a great game both teams played incredible it was a great game that’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911 your moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com the best mornings start with Wrangler jeans jackets and shirts that get your day started good mornings make for better days wrangler for the ride of life we go to the bottom of the seventh inning it’s an 11 nothing deficit for the Athletics the new second baseman is Luis Kior standing plays last night and Duban moves from second base to short so Rooker the hitter against Jason Alexander working into the seventh here as the right-hander delivers a strike the knees 0 and one he’s thrown 83 pitches 50 strikes he’s retired eight straight is up one hit on the night that’s by the man who played Rooker as he swings and misses at a change up and it’s nothing to do rooker he is three for 13 against Astros pitching this year 02 pitch and this is outside one ball and two strikes and the Astros players were saying that play by Gor uh was the best play they’ve seen live in their careers of course Clark catches his pitch misses high two and two still a great play nonetheless by Gor uh in the shallow left field of third base it was a brilliant play no question about it two and two the countries a two- two pitch to Rooker That’s taken low now being tuned it wasn’t the electric play no like wasn’t Kurt wasn’t that with Den Oh the MLB network the electric play three weeks in a row he won there’s a 3-2 pitch that’s chop foul outside third down five two showing the beards of Gor and Dallas great side by side shot beards throughout the ballpark dallas has a great beard there’s the 3-2 pitch that misses inside so Rooker walks to lead off the seven and that’ll bring up Nick the seventh inning brought to you by Hunt Day at Bakavville Norcell’s home run hunt day store close to everywhere at I 80 and Leisure Town Road here is Nick Curts who struck out in the second he grounded into a 563 double play in the four 231 for Nick seven homers he’s permanent 19 runs as Alexander delivers there’s a line drive base hit pass the diving first baseman Walker down the right field line giving chase as the right fielder Smith going to third base as Rooker it’s a double for Kurts and the A’s now have second and third with nobody out for Nick his fourth double of the year down that right field line and a slider and Curts hit it past Walker and down the line for a double and Gerard Diaz went out there to talk to Alexander Caleb Orton is loosening up the rightander for the Astros for the a second and third nobody out here’s Max Muny or excuse me here is Gio Roella I should say orella took over for Muny in the top of the seventh so Rella the hitter you know 224 in 33 games just off the IIL he takes the slider away one ball and no strike don Nukem left handing up for the Athletics 11 nothing Astros we’re in the bottom of the seventh inning with two on and nobody out there’s the one to Gio that’s swung on and hit into center field for a base hit in to score is Rooker Curts around third he’ll hold there looked like the Astros were conceding that second run but it’s an 111 game one base at a time so an RBI for Gorella and it’s an 111 game the A’s are on the board and here is Austin wins and Curtis coming off an injury there’s no reason to force the issue no question down by 10 very smart you’re right 111 the score and here is Winss wins has bounced out twice austin right hand hitter there’s the pitch alexander delivers outside one and0 alexander 93 pitches now vince hitting 333 overall he’s 18 for 54 there’s the pitch that’s swung a little slow roller foul outside third with back-to- back hits for the first time in this game he’s given 12 back of the Astros eight back of the wild card as Alexander looks in the one-1 pit that’s a chopper toward the third baseman Nukem and Macgyver for the a 14 hits houston three hit days a pitch is a drive to left field and deep and Denzel Clark going back and has to play it off the wall and into second base parades and the throw and the tag and he’s in there left center field a shot and Denzel played it off the wall that’s a double for Isaac Paredus as we said a million times over the years this is the last thing a manager wants to do yep i’d say compelled to do it in a blowout game although I thought it was kind of weird didn’t you that the Dodgers when they were blowing out the Giants TK TK in unusual I think for a team that’s in front to do it two and a third right here’s a ball hit to second on one hop by Cesar Salazar and he’s thrown out by Uria runner goes to third one away i think Bo Mel even said after the game that he doesn’t recall using a possession player when his team is in front gerard Diaz a right-handed hitter and it’s floating its way up there at 41 miles an hour and it’s ball one one and0 15 hits for the Astro we had been mentioning the uh the Coast League action today the pitch a strike one ball one strike jack Perkins five innings a hit no runs as he improves to three and two with a 286 ERA and that’s out number two i’m looking at the box that’s okay yeah grounded to third okay thank you five to three so Perkins in nine appearances this year is three and two the 286 ERA fifth round pick of the A’s in 22 out of Indiana has really good stuff does all the spring training look good yeah the other thing here and there is a strike these are Ephas pitches 40 miles an hour you know the other day the A’s signed a veteran named Scott McGuff so pitch softball ground ball to short to his left here’s the throw by Schuman inside for the out nice job by Willie Macgyver a big smile on his face sometimes in games like this a little levity is not the worst thing in the world to the bottom of the ninth 13 great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921 money back rooker leads off for the ace bottom of the ninth 13-3 Astros against the left-hander Bennett Susa into his second inning and Rooker right-handed hitter has a hit tonight takes outside 15 hits for the Astros three hits for the A susa delivers and it’s swung on short right by Gior the second baseman drifting out into right field he makes the catch the ninth inning of today’s game is brought to you by Hobblet Family dealerships hobt has it no hassle no pressure ever we had briefly mentioned Scott McGuff tied by the A’s and he pitched two innings tonight against Sugarland he is 35 years of age been around several organizations he was drafted by the Dodgers out of Oregon 14 years ago and the big taken inside by Kurt and Aaron Brook is back with the A third time he’s been in the A organization he’s 35 he pitched seven innings the other day in double A at Midland in the Texas League 35 hit foul left side out of play but it happens you have injuries at the big league level it’s a you know a battle of attrition during the season guys get up they go up from triple A to the big leagues now you need somebody in double A and kind of works his way through your your entire system one one pitch is outside two balls in one strike and so you need I mean the calls go out we’ve got to find some arms or or some position player yeah he’s familiar with Brooks he pitched a couple good games i was two years ago or last year got to lose track the two-1 pitch first check next swing and he goes and it’s two and two this part of the deal now yep here’s the 2- two now time is called by Kurt kurts had a double in the seventh inning has had one hit until the seventh one hit through six allowed by Jason Alexander who’s going to get the win the 2-2 going on a high pop up short center field dubon the shorts stop going out he’s way out there and he makes the catch two away hope you enjoy us the rest of the home stand two more games with the Astros tomorrow and Thursday night the Guardians in here Friday night Saturday night and Sunday afternoon mason Miller bobblehead on Sunday it would be great to have Steven Vote back at the ballpark here absolutely one of the great guys of all time and outstanding player for the A’s two time allstars as we said earlier for Shella who came off the bench delivered a base hit earlier takes a strike two out 133 Astros bottom of the ninth going to be a reunion for him as he knows so many people in this organization and the fish to Gio is swung on a miss and they count one and one class act no question here’s the 1-1 pitch and Susa fires it swung on to miss in the count one and two one ball two strikes left-hander ready out of the stretch perselle awaits and here’s the pitch and that’s swung on a deep drive left center field meer’s a center fielder going back all the way to the wall and he’s going to have to play it off the wall and going to second with a double is Gio Urchella and he’s two for two tonight and that’ll bring up Austin Wins oh to see it come off the IIL two hits right away mhm there’s Austin wins and the pitch by Susa hit foul after the bag over third the Guardians beat the Giants 3 to2 so Cleveland beat the Giants in San Francisco here’s the 01 pitch on the way that’s a strike on the outside corner on the line for Jason Alexander who goes six plus three hits three runs and two earned runs now the O2 and ready at the belt and the fish to Austin wins is taken in the dirt one ball is two strike so the Guardians will be busting up here from San Francisco they have a day game on Thursday to finish their series down there on the west side of San Francisco Bay the one who pitched to Austin wins here it is wins swings and misses pitch in the dirt and the catcher Diaz Pierce himself strike out two three and the Astros have beaten the A’s tonight in resounding fashion it was 13-3 in favor of Houston mark Brady back in our studio ryan Carlson here at the ballpark the Astros improved 42 and 31 they’ve won six of seven the Athletics fall to 30 and 45 they’ve won four of five alexander the winner his third major league win he’s 1-0 on the year sears the loser he’s 5-6 13 runs 15 hits an error and 10 left for Houston three runs four hits an error and three left for the Athletics the uh attendance tonight was 8,315 the time of the game was 2 hours and 48 minutes ace Cast live with Howdy and the Commander coming up at 5:00 tomorrow prior to game three of the series severino against Valdez hope you can join us out here and then 7:05 on Thursday Guardians at 7:05 on Friday and Saturday and 105 on Sunday and now for Johnny Dasco and Chris Kerry and Chris Townsen and Jessica Klein and also for the commander and for Tony Kemp was joined our broadcast team i’m Ken Cor again the final was the Astros third let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term today’s phrase is apo taco do you know what it means far too often here at the ballpark in West Sacramento the Athletics giving up 10 or more runs as they lose tonight 13-3 but the good news is it’s baseball and you got another game tomorrow it’s so far you’re one and one in the four game set between the Athletics and the Houston Astros chris Towns and alongside Tony Kimp and you know these games you want to say just turned the page unfortunately we’ve just seen too many of them yeah I think unfortunately for Sears tonight it was the the three walks in the first inning and then that Jacob Wilson trying to dive up the middle broken bat single two RBI’s and that’s kind of where it started but for tonight I think the guys are just going to want to flush this and get to tomorrow yeah so tough for JP Sears who had his worst outing of his career recently against this team the Houston Astros in Houston you talked to him last night you talk about you saw that you saw the eyes you saw that want and that will and unfortunately it just wasn’t there today and another tough one for him is it just he just doesn’t look himself out on the mound yeah and you know sometimes you have teams that just have your number and for me it was the Rays i I think I might have had one hit my whole career against the Rays and I think right now for JP it’s the Astros they just they’re the monkey on his back right now can’t really get him off and bad things have been happening for him and so I think that snowball effect is unfortunately one of the things that he’s trying to get rid of uh and tonight that’s what it looked like well and you think about and Dallas Braden talks about all the time in the change up keeping the ball on this side of the wall not over the wall that’s 18 home runs he’s given up this year it’s not the most in baseball but he’s in the top three and that’s something that you know you got to keep the ball in the yard it doesn’t matter where you’re pitching because we’ve been seeing the ball go out in all ballparks just not here at the ballpark in West Sacramento against JP Sears yeah I think it really started in the first inning i think he was trying to locate that fast ball at the top of the zone and he was getting behind hitters those three walks is kind of what set the tone for what was to come and then he went three and a third i think that was the same amount of time he had against the Astros last time and his pitch count was up and you know then the bullpen has to step in we talk about it all the time walks are the devil you can’t defend them nothing good happens with walks and they always come back to haunt you yeah i think the the baseball guys really don’t like to see to see walks at all no and JP Sears is a guy that you think is not going to walk a lot of guys but uh time for the Toyota turning point and you look for the Houston Astros as they lost yesterday walk-off fashion and the the ball you talked about just not a hard hit ball up the middle jacob Wilson’s not able to get it and you were hoping he was going to get out of the early jam and next thing you know he’s down two nothing and the pitch count is up yeah when the pitch count starts to get up and then I feel like those hitters on the Astros side just sort of started to smell blood and then I also think for what the Astros did against JP today is they had a good plan those pitches that were over the middle of the plate or a little bit in those guys wheelhouses they were not missing them there weren’t a lot of foul balls in those first couple innings um you know other than the walks it was balls that were getting hit pretty hard so um for today I know that JP probably wants to turn the page yeah you’re looking at three three and a third and he threw 76 pitches that’s not JP Sears or if he is going to be successful that’s that that is not the game plan when he starts throwing a lot of pitches he’s in trouble yeah and I think for what the Astros are doing for their approach against JP I’ve been on the field for what JP does he works quick he does the things right but I think for the Astros in these last two outings for him I think it’s just been the pitch count is just too high i think at one point he had thrown 40 pitches and I think 20 of them were balls and 20 of them were strikes so uh you know for JP I know that he wants to continue to claw his way back out of what he’s going through right now so he just has to continue to get back in the film room and see what’s going wrong for him well at some point too you got to give a lot of credit to the Houston Astros i know we’re not all huge fans of the Astros but the reality is they’re replacing a lot of different guys cuz Bregman no longer there tucker’s no longer there uh Kareah is not Springer guys that they won championships with you played with some of these guys they’re not there and they’re replacing him and I think Cam Smith Cam Smith’s 22 years old had two home runs tonight they’re doing a very good job we’re not even seeing Yordon Alvarez either this is I The team has changed dramatically but they’re still in first place i mean look at what they’re Jason Alexander was a guy who was just bitching out of the A’s bullpen he goes out and has a great night tonight so it is amazing that Houston keeps the a lot of turnover going with the roster but they just keep on winning they keep on being in first place well that’s one thing that I can talk about is actually being in that organization and how they develop players is they do it really well and one thing about that organization is it’s the next man up mentality and once that next man gets called up they’re ready to go whenever you’re coming through single A double A and AAA they are getting you ready for the big leagues it’s not about let’s get you ready for the next step it’s like you’re an Aball what’s going to happen when you get to the big leagues and so you can’t say enough good things about what the Astros do from a farm system standpoint and that’s why you they continue to develop guys and when that when analytics was getting brought about uh when I was there 2018 2019 they were ahead of the curve and so that that kind of shows that is really interesting because you know so many times like you said when you’re an Aball you want to get to double A you’re double A you want to get to AAA but in the Astros organization you’re saying you’re always thinking even though you’re going from Aball to double A it’s about the big leagues it’s about when you get to the big leagues that’s such the mentality that you’re going to get to the big leagues how are you going to perform when you get there and we’re going to teach you all the you think everybody would be doing it that way yeah so I remember being in Quad Cities uh Aball and then going to Lancaster and there was always a picture well it was a Minuteade Park so it was always a picture of Minuteade Park and the caption was what will you do when you get here and so I think as you’re a player you kind of visualize yourself going through these moments of what am I going to do when I get there and I want to be successful when I get there so you know like I said it’s a like we talked about it’s a testament to what the organization brings to to the field put that out in the universe right visualize it you got to see it you got to believe it and it can come true i I really like it we got to get into more of that later let’s get to the River Rock daily jackpot and when you talk about home runs allowed the Athletics have allowed more home runs than anybody else 110 and you know there’s been a lot of excuses and I think for a lot of us who are around it I really don’t want to hear the excuses right i mean the bottom line is you got to be better yeah i think at this point you’re in the season and you’re at a point in where you’re kind of hitting that lull and you’re trying to get to break the the fastest that you can and uh you know we’re talking about those home runs and that’s damage that’s OPS and um you know you mix those home runs in with those walks and then I think uh you’re going to have you’re going to have a lot of runs scored on you no doubt i mean we’re talking 23% of the games so far this year the A’s have given up 10 or more runs and a lot has to do with all the home runs that they’re giving up 17 times they’ve given up 10 runs or more in 75 games so it’s 22.6 we’ll round it up to 23% math was never my strength at San Jose State so uh but I just it is 2 we’ll round up to 23% tony that’s not good yeah I’m not a math guy either but I think when you can keep the ball in the ballpark and you can let your defense work a little bit better it will give you a better chance to win and so tonight giving up those home runs giving up those walks it it kind of leads to a recipe of disaster and there’s something that from the mental side of this game because everything about this game yes we think it’s about the physical skill but so much is the mental side of it for the offensive players and the guys playing defense i hate to say it but there may be this here we go again when they start seeing home runs and it’s six runs then eight runs then 10 then 13 it’s very deflating for a team especially you know not only the the pitching but for the offensive players yeah and when you’re out there I think the hard part about it is staying in the game and making sure you have that next atbat matter because sometimes you can get in that lull of the game and runs are being scored and you’re standing there and then you have to flip it over and turn it to your next at bat and the thing when you’re a hitter and you’re going into that next at bat it is should I be aggressive it’s oh well should I swing at the first pitch and then sometimes you can kind of get out of your approach and so that can lead to being passive aggressive at the plate not hitting your pitch and so it kind of just snowballs sometimes when things aren’t going your way on the pitching side the game loses its edge loses it edge and that affects everybody yeah affects everybody no doubt about it let’s get to the uh pitching comparison as former athletic Jason Alexander he pitched six innings in his career with the A’s and four outings all out of the bullpen he was really fabulous tonight he didn’t get touched up until the seventh inning uh the numbers for JP Sears really really tough three and a third five runs it just just was was was not not the night you were thinking JP Sears was going to have and obviously as you said there there are teams that have have have guys numbers and it looks like Houston has his yeah and I think you have to give credit to Alexander as well a team that dropped him and then he goes to the division rival and sometimes you have a little bit of an edge when you’re you just get dropped from a team and then all of a sudden you’re pitching against him and then he goes out there and he those 95 pitches gets to the seventh inning and then um tip your cap oh there’s no question you just let me go let me go i go to TripleA for the Astros i pitch well they call me up and I get called up to start against you yeah you don’t think there was a little extra in that start for Jason Alexander that I’m going to show you yeah I think you listen i had no animosity towards the uh the Astros fans but when I became an A anytime I went to Houston I wanted to say okay you know I I can still play and so I know that Alexander he probably went to sleep last night uh licking his chops ready to get on the mound today and that’s something you never lose that’s something you never lose like even even even guys who get drafted by an organization and they never even play for the big club years later they’ll play against that team and they’ll still be I want to stick it to these guys they’re like you never even made it to the big leagues you got traded that that thought of I want I want to always get you for for you getting rid of me that never leaves a ball player yeah so uh a story that I have is uh my college roommate Mike Shrimsky uh playing for the Giants he had been in the Orioles organization this whole time never got a shot to get in the big leagues they drop him and then the Giants pick him up and what do you know his first home run is against the Orioles at Camden Yards and so he was feeling good about it so it never leaves you yeah and by the way Des is going to tee it up here pretty soon against his old team the Boston Red Sox i can’t wait to see how that is going to play out all right a tough loss for the Athletics as they lose game two of this four game set 13 to3 coming up next we’ll hear from this skipper Mark Catse right here on Acecast toyota A’s cast on NBC Sports California presented by Toyota class leading Beat the Heat sale at Mancini Sleepworld jobs sleepworld.com i was afraid of this the Toyota social poll favorite rookie moment of 2025 and the one that we love so much got boat raced obviously Clark recently doing what he did was spectacular in Anaheim 49% curts with the walk-off last night 34 jacob Wilson 15game hitting streak 14 willie Macyver though guy that’s 28 years old making his debut against the Philadelphia Phillies who at that time had the best record in baseball and the A’s needed that victory on that Sunday tonight be swept he got the game-winning hit and threw out the runner at second to to end the game and that only gets 3% you feel some type of way about it i Yeah I’m a little disappointed in the fan base like seriously that that story right there i mean obviously Clark’s catch and what Curts did last night these young men are spectacular but the story of a 28-year-old rookie and his family here and what that meant and the tears we got to have him on Acecast live the next day uh on that Monday and it was wow just going just seeing it through his eyes was so special only getting 3% yeah but see you get that perspective of being down there you know the fans see it on TV they don’t really they they’re trying to feel that how you were but I think the Clark robbery was so good and it’s so fresh and the electric play of the week obviously and for the third straight week for the third straight week so that’s your winner yeah it is spectacular and you know still I think he could jump over that wall and run up the rocks there in Anaheim and catch a ball i mean he said Denzel Clark is something like the the ball that went into I can’t even I don’t have my scorebook in front of me but the ball later in the game that went into the gap and hit off the wall and was I was like man I thought he was going to get that you now feel like Denzel Clark will get anything that is hit in the outfield where in the outfield in the gap where’s he at where’s he at out there i need him it’s kind of like you at second base back in the day you always thought no matter what crazy play could be made you were going to make it unfortunately for the A’s they lose game two of this four game set 13-3 here’s Marc after the game what’ you see going on with Sears seemed obviously the first inning pretty uncharacteristic with three walks there yeah I mean he just from the get-go he really didn’t have good command tonight um it’s and like you said that’s that’s really uncharacteristic for uh for JP he usually you know commands the baseball pounds the zone and um you know that first inning of three walks you just you felt like you know we would got lucky if we would have got out of that inning and we didn’t um you know and it just kind of spiraled from there i think again we saw the ball up in the zone uh you know some some soft close pitches go out of the ballpark um it’s like we talked last night you know what what we did well for four games tonight we uh unfortunately didn’t do well and and uh anytime you get behind a good team like that it’s tough to come back um what’ you see from Jason Alexander that kind of gave you guys trouble there seemed like he was rolling there you know I mean the sinker gave us problems in the change up our lefties uh you know in order to to to have success against him the approach was to to you know try to let the ball travel a little bit and use the opposite field for the most part you know and uh our lefties couldn’t stick with the approach tonight they they they chased the change up and uh you know I think overall I mean he he he pounded the zone and that’s the difference he threw the ball at the bottom of the zone where he can be effective and he used his change up effectively off the fast ball it was a good mix is Lawrence Butler okay i know he seemed like he was holding his hand like in pain a little bit after that uh yeah you know when he hits the ball off the end uh the vibration seems to to really bother him uh more than most um and I think that’s just the uh the reaction to to a ball that was hit off the end of the bat in the last at bat yeah will you agree that one of the positive things is seeing that is back and healthy had two knocks there yeah you know I mean you know Max has been swinging the bat well and playing a lot so it was a great opportunity to to get Gio a couple at bats um you know he obviously was acted activated today and those those two those two bats were were really quality at bats it were really nice swings yes and uh do you know anything new about Grand Horn that you want to share now I I haven’t gotten any word i just literally got my box score but I’ll have an update for you first thing tomorrow um going forward after um JP’s rough outing tonight um is moving him out of the rotation um a possibility or you guys have had success with using an opener as well is that is there a potential with that there i don’t know if you can answer that but Well no I I obviously you know you you look to evaluate the start you you look to evaluate you know what he’s done in the past few starts um you know for JP I mean he’s been one of our guys in this rotation for two and a half well two years and 3 months and made every start so um you know we’ll go look at and evaluate our options and you know we’re always open to to doing things that we feel are best for the team and and and for the player as well let’s go to the highlight zone brought to you by Mancini Sleepworld and Austin wins has shown you a lot so far with the bat his ability to call games but also his ability to throw yeah I think that pickup for the A’s down the road is going to
