What comes NEXT after Desmond Bane trade? The TIGHTROPE the Orlando Magic walk to finish roster

the Desmond Bane trade is done we’ve looked at it from so many angles so that begs the question what comes next why that answer is not so easy and the tightroppe the magic are still walking coming up a month ago now I kind of laid out what my quote unquote perfect off seasonason is and I laid out three things that I thought the Magic needed to accomplish this summer the first was find a starting level guard we all thought it’d be a point guard but the Magic found a starting level guard in Desmond Bane and and frankly probably went beyond our wildest dreams with the swing that they took now the the the ball has hit bat we heard that crack we’re watching watching it sail we’re going to find out if it goes over the fence or not to to strain that baseball analogy the other two needs that I saw that the Magic need was an upgrade at at at that scoring guard position essentially a Cole Anthony upgrade obviously Cole Anthony no longer on the team the Magic need to find a replacement for him and his role on the team and then to find like an upgrade for Gary Harris obviously not official yet but the Magic are expected to decline the option on Gary Harris we’ll get to the implications of all what all that means and why the Magic did that coming up in a moment the Magic roster as it is is not complete jeff Welman said as much when we spoke to him on Monday saying there is still work to do and now that this big domino has fallen jeff Welman said they have to go back and kind of recalibrate everything else they’re doing we are going to recalibrate the draft and what the Magic are looking for in the draft on tomorrow’s episode of Locked on Magic but obviously things start there you have the number 25 pick you no longer have the number 16 pick so what are you going to do there jeff Welman even said that they kind of have to relap the league and kind of figure out how the Magic fit into what other teams are thinking and and and how things change especially now that the Magic have burned a lot of their assets they pretty much traded every draft pick they can uh and then they traded two really valuable and movable contracts and Contavius Cwell Pope and Cole Anthony now what do the Magic do now who do the Magic move what is available to them and so there is this little bit of a reset so let’s reset let’s reset the roster and tell and say exactly what we mean the Magic starting lineup right now looks really good on people and again it some of it depends on how far you’re going to go with Wendell Carter and I get that uh y’all know me i’m a Wendell defender did a whole episode on him a couple weeks ago um as well maybe the Magic upgraded center maybe they don’t it’s going to be tough with Wendell’s contract as it is it’s affordable now but it bumps up from I believe 11 to $18 million next year it’s one of the reasons why the Magic will be a second apron team next year um Wendo Carter probably isn’t getting moved so your starting lineup is Jaylen Suggs Desmond Bane France Vagner Paulo Bancer Wendell Carter no reason to think that lineup isn’t going to be fine and isn’t going to be competitive is it a championship lineup we’re going to find out we’re going to find out real quickly how good that lineup really is but the Magic starting lineup feels very much set in stone so what’s left on the bench the bench and bench scoring has been a really key part of the Magic’s formula over the last two years when the Magic have been at their most successful they’ve been one of the highest scoring benches in the league now that bench has taken a major hit in the playoffs it took a hit in the playoffs in 2024 mo Cole Anthony struggled game six accepted um Mo Vagner had his ups and downs during that playoff series but here’s the Magic’s bench as it stands rotation level players from last year anthony Black one two three play wherever um Jonathan Isaac great defender not a great offensive player at this point and only played 15 minutes per game last year goabat and then Mo Vagner who is injured and we’ll talk a little bit more about what the Magic might do with him we’ve talked about that already on the show but we’ll rehash that coming up in a moment we know that Jamal Mosley typically likes to play 10 guys and and looking at the Magic’s starting lineup right now to me it would be insane not to have at least one of the big four uh of the the the big I don’t know what we’re going to call them we got to we got to come up with a name the four horsemen the the you like we gotta find a name for that that quartet of players but there is no reason that the Magic should have any lineup that does not include one of Jaylen Suggs Paulo Bancerero Fran Vagner or Desmond Bane if there’s injuries obviously that changes things but if this team is healthy one of those four will be on the floor at all times and frankly there should be very few lineups that there aren’t two of those four on the floor so maybe the Magic can get away with a nine-man rotation but even then if your nine-man rotation is Anthony Black Jonathan Isaac Tristan Dilva who played a lot last year but you know is was a rookie we’ll see what he looks like in his second year and then Goa Bat or Mo Vagner depending on who’s healthy and who’s got it going that at that at any point that is not a bench that strikes fear in anybody’s hearts if the Magic are truly going to improve on offense they’re going to need a bench that can score because the the the starting offense should be better desmond Bane and Jaylen Suggs’s return and hopefully improved three-point shooting from Paulo Banker certainly from France Vagner and certainly from Wendell Carter that should boost the Magic’s offense a lot but if the bench comes in and they’re back to 2025 Magic offense that’s not going to be good enough and so yes we are still looking for offensive players like I said I think the goal for the rest of the offseason now is find a backup point guard find a true point guard so you do have that on the roster when you need it and then fill in that and then fill in with another kind of wing shooter like a better version of Gary Harris again maybe that’s Jed Howard maybe you you signed someone to a a smaller than normal deal um a smaller than normal deal to give Jed Howard to give Jed Howard a chance to compete for that spot i don’t know i I don’t know the answer to that and you know again like I like Jet as a person i think there’s still a lot of potential in Jet but Jet did nothing to earn a start a rotation spot there’s unfortunately Jet Howard when he was given that rotation spot did not do much with it he lost it very very quickly and the Magic didn’t trust him to defend so unless there is a giant leap coming I I can’t assume Jed Howard’s going to be in the rotation just like frankly I like Tristan Dilva a lot but I’m uncomfortable going into the off seasonason with Anthony Black as my top scorer off the bench and I like Anthony Black great defender improving offensive player but that his ability to take over was a problem he never really took over or asserted himself in g in games consistently and then Tristan Dilva did some nice things but faded out of the rotation i’d like there to be a path for him to play for sure but the Magic can’t go into the offseason with this as their bench so what are the finances like how do the Magic add players to the team get your get your notepads get your pens get your papers get your calculators we’re going to run those numbers coming up here in just a moment but first today’s episode of A Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at Oolop olly Pop is a new kind of soda made for people who love the classic taste of soda but want something that supports their health with just two to five grams of sugar and nine grams of prebiotic fiber in every can Olly Pop is reimagining soda in a way that’s better for your gut traditional sodas are loaded with sugar like 39 grams in a regular Coke or 44 grams in an orange Fanta olip Pop flips that script with just a fraction of the sugar no artificial sweeteners and gut friendly ingredients like Olysmart a blend shown to support digestive and overall health it’s soda that tastes like the real thing but actually does something good for your body i cut out soda from my diet back when I was in high school it really helped me lose a little bit of weight actually I’ve slowly begun introducing soda i drink ginger ale on on occasion at at dinner i’ve added Ollie Pop to my rotation and frankly I was a little bit afraid a little bit skeptical because it’s been so long since I had soda olop is delicious the fact that it has so low such low sugar it tastes great olop is definitely something you should try and you can get a free can of Olop just buy any two cans in the store and they’ll reimburse you for one head to drinkolipop.comlocknba to claim your free can and find Olipop near near you that’s drinklyop.comlockonba so we’re going to dive into some numbers here it’s number time i I promised there would be no math i’ve done the math for you i’ve got it all written down so I don’t have to do it again let’s talk about what the Magic have in front of them we’ve talked a little bit about this and this reality uh you know since that report came out that the Magic might use the full mid-level exception i’ll explain in a minute why I don’t think that’s going to be the case and we’ll go through some potential free agency options and and and where the Magic might go but let’s start here there’s already been some reporting Mike Scottto of Hoop Hype and then confirmed by Jason Bey the Orlando Sentinel that the Magic are going to decline team options on Gary Harris and Corey Joseph this is a purely mechanical thing because this puts the Magic under the First Apron we’ve talked a little bit about the first apron the first apron is kind of the first level of restrictions it simply mean for for all intents and purposes being over the first apron means you cannot take back more money than you send out you can only take back less money now look the Desmond the Magic were always operating above the first apron entering this off season one of the reasons the Magic had to do the Desmond Bane train now is because they would be uh it would been really because Desmond Bane’s contract increases and uh increases the Magic would be taking back more money than they sent out it would be illegal under the first April the Magic uh took in about a million and a half$2 million less than they sent out in this deal so Magic actually cut payroll for 2024 under the 2025 cap that’ll obviously increase once it’s July 1 so um that’s that’s just a m cap mechanical thing um so cutting Gary Harris and Cory Joseph doing that or declining those team options allows the Magic to make trades again or or or frees the Magic up to make trades that’s all that did um that again I want to stress this because I’ve seen this misreported elsewhere and we’re going to talk a little about this here in a minute um just because the Magic declined these team options does not mean they cannot bring these players back remember back when we did that long three-part episode with with Keith Smith he mentioned the Magic will probably decline the team option on Corey Joseph because of some contractual language that saves them a little bit of money still very possible they bring him back on like a minimum deal they can always do that um Gary Harris could come back on a smaller deal as well i don’t know if the Magic want that i don’t know if Gary Harris really wants that but it’s certainly a possibility it’s certainly out there and of course we’ve talked plenty about how the Magic could decline Mov’s team option and then bring him back on a new deal they have bird rights they can do that but I’ll explain those uh the restrictions on that in a minute as things stand as things stand with these two team options to climb the Magic have 190.4 million in committed salary for the 2026 season that puts the Magic $5.5 million below the first apron but $2.5 million above the tax line the Magic are going to pay the tax this year there’s no getting around it there’s no avoiding it the trick here the trick here is trying to access the non- taxpayer mid-level exception so the magic are over the cap that means you do not have the ability to go out and sign free agents you can only sign free agents into cap room unless you have an exception and the not and the mid-level exception is an exception to the salary cap it allows you to sign a player while you are over the cap now again one of the consequences and this is really really really important one of the consequences of s of you signing a player with the mid-level exception is that means you are hardcapped at the first apron that means you cannot go above the first apron if you use them at level exception the just as a point of information then the magic are currently hardcapped at the second apron because they aggregated contracts they use two players to get one once you send out two players you are automatically hardcapped at the second apron so the Magic can’t go above that line that shouldn’t be a problem this year so here’s where we’re going to do some math if the Magic decline the team options on Mo Vagner and Caleb Houston they get down to $10.7 million so Mo Vagner’s contracts about 11 million they get down to $10.7 million below the luxury tax line that gives them access to the non- taxpayer mid-level exception it also means the Magic have a maximum a a hardcapped maximum of $18.7 million to spend the 25th pick will have a cap hold of about $3 million sign that player for $3 million the Magic really only have $15.7 million to spend on free agency and to resign Mov now this is a really important point i want to really really stress this a hard cap is a hard cap you cannot go over the hard cap once it’s triggered for any reason so if the Magic sign a bunch if the Magic just signed two players and spend all that money no minimum contracts there’s no exceptions you can sign two A guys that that’s a way that’s kind of a way around the hard cap but once once your hard cap is triggered you cannot go over it for any reason there’s actually kind of a small problem that Dallas had when they had all their injuries because there was getting because they were hardcaped they couldn’t sign they couldn’t even sign a minimum player or 10-day contract or they would have gone over the hard cap and they almost weren’t able to field the legal roster so just something to keep in mind here so again essentially the Magic have $15.7 million to spend maximum this off season now if the Magic do not decline Vagner’s team option which again 50/50 I think it depends on what the market bears and and the Magic should know who they’re targeting and who they’re signing before that deadline on June 30th um let’s not as as Keith always likes to say when he comes on this show let’s not be naive everybody knows what they’re doing before the before the whistle goes on June 30th um the MA if if the match do not decline Mo Vagner’s contract that means they’re not spending them the mid-level exception or the non-t taxpayer mid-level exception if they retain Movager’s uh team option if they pick that up that only gives them access to 5.2 the $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception but again that triggers a hard cap and is actually only $4.7 million so I I think it’s it’s to the Magic’s benefit to decline this team option even if there’s an attempt to resign Movagner’s contract as part of the calculus of what you’re signing um so if Mov’s at 11 and you think you can get him at maybe like 10 for 30 you know or three for 30 or or like bring him down and in and overall salary but give him that long-term contra contractual security um if that’s the plan then you only have the 5.7 million to spend um you know the five 5.7 million to spend or 4.7 million to spend who knows like again like this it just may be the reality that that the contract that Movager is looking to sign um it may just be essentially the tax pyramid level exception so this is this is the big sticking point then because the Magic like I said have two big needs to fill and resign Mov now the draft is a big piece of this the Magic almost have to get the draft right they almost have to be right on the draft and then they got to go out and find a free agent so let’s go through the list let’s talk about free agents the Magic can and should target we’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment but first today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at Game Time there is nothing should be pretty clear at this point that the Magics still have work to do the Magics still have a roster to build and look if you’ve been watching these playoffs depth matters if you know this Magic team depth matters it’s going to be important to have a bench that can sustain things and keep this team in it and the Magic are going to have to be very precise and very good at things that they’ve been a little too hit or miss on some of their free agent obviously a lot of their free agent signings Alfred Ramino didn’t work out contavius Cowell Pope didn’t work didn’t work out as well as they would have liked a lot of these kind of big free agent signings that we got really excited about have not worked out as well as the Magic had hoped there’s been a lot of draft misses that have begun to hurt the team whether it was Chuma OKK in 2019 and I don’t completely blame him on that because I think COVID really disrupted disrupted him but they could have had Nicole Alexander Walker and we’re going to talk about him here in a minute um you know the Jed Howard pick is starting to look pretty bad anthony Black may have been the right idea for a high upside swing but now the Magic need a little bit more skill for who they are the Magic have to add to this roster still there is still a lot of work to do and as I mentioned they only got about $15.7 million to spread acre across two key rotation players and then maybe fill in the back of their bench as well this is not a good class for free agency let’s just let’s just make that really really really clear this is not a good class for free agents it is a free agency class that doesn’t have a lot of star power lebron and James Harden are the big fishes they’re probably staying where they’re at they’re not going anywhere um it’s got some interesting players that could make some decisions but this is obviously a summer for trades which the Magic have started off find kind of just like how the Magic made their trades it’s really hard to imagine the Magic would uh target someone who doesn’t fit their overall philosophy it is hard to imagine the Magic would spend the MLE full or otherwise on a player who isn’t going to compete on defense and isn’t going to fulfill that defensive identity um it isn’t part of that kind of versatile idea that the Magic have uh I’m using the athletics um like kind of free agency tiers like the guys who are in the at least MLE maybe more these guy you know two of these guys don’t fit d’angelo Russell we’ve talked about him endlessly he’d be a great scorer he’d be a really good sixman and and I I like I don’t hate the idea but he is just not a defender he’s really inconsistent offensively or defensively um at the very least offensively he can be up and down he’s has that all-star that that kind of spurtability uh potential but is he going to accept that kind of a role on this team is is that the kind of player the Magic want to bring in same deal with Cam Thomas from Brooklyn he’s probably going to get more than the MLE uh Malik Beasley has been a big talker uh we Yeah we wrote an article about potentially trying to poach him on a line of magic daily i I suspect the Pistons who have cap room are going to go out of their way to make sure they keep him he was one of the best three-point shooters in the league last year he started for the Pistons i don’t think he’s coming to Orlando to come off the bench um Trey Jones is a potentially interesting name muel Alexander Walker is someone that we’ve talked about the Magic have been rumored already to be chasing him if the Magic can get him for less than the full MLE if they can get him on a three for 36 at like $12 million $12 million is probably still too much for that what the Magic need to do with Mo Vagner if the Magic can get him at 10 or 11 and then sign Mo to the rest of that deal that probably works nel Alexander Walker’s got good size he He’s an excellent three-point shooter would be great coming off the bench as that sixman and as that extra guard um Trey Jones I don’t I don’t I don’t know uh I I he’s kind of a stats darling i don’t know if he’s the right answer um I’ve seen some Magic fans pitch me kevin Porter Jr i I am not all in on that on him or all in on him but uh he would certainly be an interesting option uh Caris Levert from Atlanta could be an interesting option as that kind of wing score that the Magic are looking for um so there are some guys out there um I’ve had a lot of Magic fans ask me about the bigs and say “Why not go for Brook Lopez?” Um I just don’t think Brook Lopez is versatile enough i don’t think that he I don’t think that he fits the team defensively just just plain and simple he’s a good defender when he has Giannis next to him is he would he be a good defender with Jonathan Isaac next to him maybe is he going to be happy not starting because I don’t think you can start him and be the same defense that the Magic are i think Wendell Carter is better defensively for the Magic than Brook Lopez would be yeah like next to Paulo I don’t want Brook Lopez so it’s probably going to be a little bit out of the Magic’s price range too but he’d be a short-term answer um Bobby Poris is also on this list the other uh the other interesting name that has been pitched to me and we’ve written a little bit about on Orlando Magic Daily is Chris Paul chris Paul would be awesome to have the point guard in this on this roster kind of settling things down i I just don’t think he wants to be a backup point guard i think he wants to start still um I I think the Magic would try to get him for less than 10 million or or cap him at 10 million he’s a short-term answer and part of what the Magic have done is they want some longer term answers they want to be kind of locked into their roster or have tradable contracts um because they’re not going to be able to spend this is their last summer where they’ll have any type of spending power that’s going to be key there are names out there though like very clearly there are guys the Magic could chase like Caris Levert not a terrible idea if you can get Caris Levert at 10 or 11 million a year um again getting that frontloaded would be better but it’s going to be really tough with the Magic’s financial restrictions and they’re wanting to resign Mo Vagner that would be a great find that would be a great grab for the Magic um especially if they can’t get Nico Alexander Walker again coming off the bench you’re you’re not asking a lot but I would say Caris Levert not the spuriest guy and I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s back in Atlanta next year either you might notice I didn’t say a lot of point guards this is not a good free agent class for point guards um Chris Paul would be a great ad um Taius Jones is looking like a minimum guy so maybe maybe the idea should be go get Tyus Jones at like the taxpayer MLE at like $5 million you go dip under the TAC dip under the tax or you’re using the non-t taxpayer MLE to get him get him cheap two for 10 one for five give him kind of a prove it deal uh that kind of that kind of deal um again you don’t have Bird Rights that makes things a little bit more difficult uh and then you use him as your backup point guard but again it’s it’s it’s like I said like like I always said with Anthony Simons if the Magic wanted Taius Jones he’d be on the team already like it’s been an obvious match and guy and a guy that Magic fans have talked about forever for because of the stats and they like what the stats say about him i don’t know if Taius Jones and maybe playing alongside Anthony Black would be better for him especially coming off the bench i don’t know if Taius Jones is the answer there either my suspicion is the Magic are going to try and fill that point guard role off out of the draft um I I do think Walter Clayton Jr and Jace Richardson would be excellent backup point guards just kind of younger cheaper versions of Cole Anthony which is again I I want a Cole Anthony upgrade i want the idea of what Cole Anthony is as just a a more consistent player in that spot um maybe those maybe the Magic see those two players as that i I I see the potential for that um if if they’re gone then you got to start looking at like Dolan Trayor as a point guard and he’s too much of a project as is Ben Sif um maybe you’re looking then at Bigs and saying well I guess we’re not bringing Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mov Vagner back but again I I just knowing Wendell Carter is gonna be in and out of the lineup goat is good in spurts and small spurts i don’t trust a rookie in that spot um so maybe the answer is like go get Ryan Cochr Brener go get Thomas Sorber go get um go get Maxine Rea Reo and then go find guards on the on the market on on the free agency market again like Trey Jones might be a good option um Trey Jones is a kind of advanced stats darling um go get you know Muel Alexander Walker go you know split your MLE between two players Caris Slover and Trey Jones that’s probably a pretty good offseason at the end of the day and then see if you know Goa Maxim Reno and Gwendo Carter can hold down your center spot um I’ve seen some mocks put Ace Newell and and look the draft is going to play a factor and play a role with what the Magic could ultimately do in free agency i’ve seen some ideas for Ace Newell as Newell is a power forward who plays center um he is probably too small um to play center and is not a good enough shooter to play power forward um that is he’s he’s athletic as as all all out and and he’s a big guy um I’d rather go for Sorber um if you can find a way to and honestly like the answer might be the Magic need to try and trade up from 25 get back into that 18 19 20 21 range to make sure they get one of these guys um so the M like the point of this and and I want to do more draft stuff tomorrow we’ll we’ll we’ll we’ll make tomorrow a draft Friday we’ll reassess where the Magic sit and then I’ll rehash what I just said over the last two minutes or so um the point I want to make is that the Magic still have some some cap flexibility they have the ability to spend a little bit this summer again roughly about $15 million in total on free agents um figuring out the right guys to split that $15 million for whether it’s Mo whether it’s two free agents whoever it is that’s going to be the task for the summer because the Magic’s roster is not complete the Magic still have work to do and very very clearly they got a lot of decisions to make i’ve just I haven’t done an exhaustive list here but there is a a there is definitely work there’s still more work to do for the Magic as they move on to the next phase of this rebuild but that’s going to do it for us today we we’re out of time we don’t we don’t have we don’t have much more to say um I want to thank you all again for listening to today’s episode of Lockdown Magic you of course The Orlando Magic shook up their roster and the league in acquiring Desmond Bane. The question is what comes next to complete their offseason.

Orlando still has some clear needs they must fulfill. And they have limited resources to fill them. As the draft approaches, the Magic must plan how they plan to deploy those resources to complete their roster and build a championship team.

  1. I ran the numbers on this and with decline all of our options on Gary Harris Corey Joseph Caleb Houston and Mo (resign later) with all of those options and Bane we are 6.6 mil over the first apron. The three options minus MO is 12 million. It doesn't leave us very much. I have a feeling from Jeffs conference that JI maybe on the move. He mentioned all of our young players hinting that they will not be moved.

    Bane replaces Kcp
    #25 for Cole.

Ji is making 15 mil, thats 3 players at 5 mil each. Trade JI for picks or a player and picks. We can sign these Free Agents
    SG/SF Amir Coffey 4-5 mil
    27 years old 40%+ FG & 3pt
    PF Jake Laravia 4-5mil
    23 years old 40%+ FG & 3pt
    PF/C Guerschon Yabusele
    4-5 mil
29 years old 50/38% sixers want him but tight Salary.
Resign Mo for whats left to stay under salary cap. Unload Jett 5 mil for Tyus Jones. 44/41% bench full of shooters.

  2. What they really need to do is trade Isaac before next week's draft for someone who's contract expires on June 31st which would give the Magic a bunch more money to work with. One other thing they could do as well although not likely is trade the 25th pick and not add that salary on to the payroll which gives them another 3 Million to work with.

  3. i don't think a scorer off the bench is a necessity, especially if we are hoping to keep one of the fantastic four on the floor at all times. i'd prefer someone on the bench to provide something the starting 5 doesn't do well in case we need something like that in a playoff matchup. i'd like a high level backup pure point guard that can work with the starters when the game conditions/opponent dictate, like CP3, schroeder, or clarkson.
