on with a walk 25-year-old from Albuquerque New Mexico Mitchell Parker ready for the first pitch of tonight’s ball game Raises the arms to the sky Comes down and the center field door is open We’ve waited an hour 45 minutes for baseball We’ll wait a few more seconds because there’s nobody out there to close the gate Jacob Young saying “Anybody there?” Cuz they have to lock it from the back right jacob Young’s closing the left side I mean come on But now one of the grounds crew members is going to sprint out all the way to center field Jacob Young is missing There he is He’s going to get a hand because he’s closed the left side door I guess they have a thing that goes down and locks it into a a latch at the ground But the other door has got to be closed from the outside cuz you otherwise if it’s not locked in place somebody run right through it knock it open And if Jacob Young does it from the the outside of the wall we have no center fielder That’s right All right Now the 402 mark is visible to us So now they had to open the left door close the right door and close the left door I guess the right door had to close first Probably a latch that slides through both of them So now we’ll wait another minute and we’re ready for baseball Parker hands the sky Part two He steps into his windup and the first pitch on the way to Freeman That’s right down the middle of strike 93 mph Officially delivered at 8:31 It should have been 8:30 but 8:31 thanks to the door Hour and 46 minute delay prior to first pitch Parker back in with the 01 Looks it over It’s a fast ball low to the outside One ball one strike Season Freeman at 309 with a homer His batting 409 over his last 16 games Here’s the pitch from Parker Foul off Freeman’s foot He goes hobbling out of the batter’s box with the ball rolling down the third base line and he’s shaken up Freeman walks off the sting We’ll remind you that first pitch time and temperature brought to you by Offen Bachers 831 first pitch 78Β° under what’s now mostly clear sky Steman Hearn Annapolis Gainesville or Rockville Huge selection of outdoor furniture fire pits hot tubs and swim spas Freeman hops back into the box for the one-two from Parker Here it comes It’s too high Two balls two strikes Freeman really tough to strike out That stands out in this lineup that leads the majors in strikeouts He’s only fanned eight times this year He’s been hit by six pitches It’s almost as likely hit by a pitch than swinging this at a pitch The two swing a slicing drive foul on the right field side had three of those times being hit were in last night’s game which not only tied a franchise record tied the major league record CJ Abrams did it himself for the Nationals that last trip games in Arizona The wind up and the two from the left-hander swinging a foul back and Abrams can commiserate about their various bumps and bruises Even more rare than that he’s the second player in major league history to record one hit one walk and back be hit by a pitch three times in the same game Guy who specialized in getting hit by pitches the only other guy to do it Ron Hunt in 1969 The two best ball high three and two for a long time He was the major league record holder in being hit by pitches and then on Baylor passing him He used to choke up almost all the way to the trademark and stand right on top of the plate Eventually a Craig Vigio pass both Now the 3-2 from Parker made a pop up foul out of play to the right Tough guy guys who got hit a lot Dave like Don Baylor Vio the guys you mentioned were all really good hitters Ron Hunt wasn’t especially like this great power hitter or hit for a huge high average Vio a Hall of Famer and Baylor was not a Hall of Famer Won an MVP and was a terrific slugger for his career Ron Hunt is known for that one thing Three balls two strikes Long at bat here And the pitch number nine is lined to right center field That’s going to be a base hit up the gap Racing over Lyall and Young Lyall picks it up edge of the warning track as Freeman’s into second with a double Man he is a tough out Can’t strike him out And on the ninth pitch he doubles to right center leading off the ball game win this series He’s three for six with that walk and the he hit five pitches Nationals are struggling to get him out Here’s Kyle Farmer Farmer not playing in the first two games Veteran right-handed hitting utility player starting at second base tonight 230 hitter three homers 17 driven in Parker holds the set fires it’s outside with a curve Rockies second baseman the first two games Tyro Estrada was hit on the hand by a pitch and came out of the game early last night So he’s not in there tonight against the lefty Parker But Farmer is a right-handed batter Still get the platoon edge pitch So a line drive hammer to left Wood racing over and in He reaches out He makes a nice running catch and will throw it in toward the infield Ball was roped by Farmer but a good play by Wood to his left Freeman has to hold it second One away A hold of a breaking ball that dropped in over the middle of the plate Hit it hard And David Martinez has talked about all the talk about Wood They have really noticed his first step Breaks on balls hit to the outfield much much better than beginning the year He’s worked at it Here’s Jordan Beck left fielder right-handed hitter the bat behind his ear as Parker throws and the fast ball line drive caught by a leaping shortstop Abrams He climbs the ladder and robs Beck of a base hit for out number two He thought about throwing to second but Freeman got back Heck of a play by Abrams levitating to grab the second out of the inning He’s looking up at the video board and see a replay of it Really good play Ball hit hard Bucker getting some good plays behind him now Two in a Yeah they they’ve hit three rockets Two of them are out which he really needs in this first inning Here’s Michael Tolia Pitch on the way to Tolian Parker spins off a curveball for a strike Yeah right now you don’t care if they hit three Rockets as long as he gets three outs then settle in after that He’s twothirds of the way there facing Tolia who’s come back from the minor leagues in this series with a huge series Had two homers last night overall four hits Here’s the pitch expand a tapper foul right to the on hitter Brent Doyle Nice grab But has done his damage this series left-handed He’s batting right hand against Parker and down 0 and two Just underway after an hour and 46 minute delay Runner at second Freeman Parker The no two count Deals home Misses in the dirt Ball one The Nationals defensively Nathaniel Low at first Luis Garcia at second Steve Abrams at short with Brady House at third James Wood Jacob Young the doorman Alen Mile in the outfield left to right and Kbert Ruiz behind the plate for a second straight game One ball two strikes Parker staring at the runner Freeman at second Now deals to the plate and that is in there Strike three called He bends in a curveball over the outside and Mitchell Parker delivers a scoreless top of the first inning thanks to his defense of the bottom half Nashville’s will face Hermon Marquez when we return mines and I lead our local employer resource group for veterans US Steel provides high-paying jobs with good benefits and actively recruits former members of the armed forces I’m proud to work for US Steel where a commitment to our veterans is made here Mitchell Parker with his first scoreless first inning in his last five starts So Nationals come to bat looking to take the lead here against the 30-year-old right-hander from San Felix Venezuela Hermon Marquez 61 240 lbs is Marquez His 189th major league start eight against the Nationals Pitch to CJ Abrams taken That’s just low with a sinking fast ball at 93 It’s a 275 nine homers He’s had a couple of hits and three steals in this series The 10 He takes ball two low and inside from Marquez 91 hits allowed in 68 innings for the veteran righty That’s a 318 batting average against deals in and the two is ripped fouled past first base coach Herardo Parra former Rocky Only four pitchers or only three pitchers that actually have given up more hits than him The seventh overall in hits allowed in the M Working quickly the 2-1 Abrams check swing foul to the back stop pull the trigger fully on a center cut fast ball just 48 strikeouts the 68 in the ball in play a lot 22 walks he’s given up seven homers generally a ground ball pitcher RC the third baseman moves off the line now with a two- two count now some issue with the pitchcom and the catcher of Wolfford the shade under five innings Last time out was a good start One run over five innings left with a lead against the Braves but the Rockies bullpen caved in They lost 12 to four He’s gone as many as seven innings Wford going over to get a new pitch device He laid the signs to Marquez For the Rockies defensively Michael Tullley at first Kyle Farmer at second Ryan Ritter at short and we mentioned Orlando Arcia the former Brave at third Jordan Beck Brentton Doyle Sam Hillyard at the outfield and the rookie Fulford is still having an issue It’s 8:41 We’re in the first inning I think I thought Marquez could hear it but apparently Fulford couldn’t hear his own signaling device You know Marcus for as long as he’s been around you mentioned not striking a lot this year but he is the franchise leader in career strikeouts They’ve surpassed number 48 Dar Roa the lefty Oh sure Darosa was probably the best pitcher they’ve ever had as far as pitching at Coors Field He he figured out how to do it wasn’t intimidated by it Marquez sharing a laugh with Orlando RC is playing catch while the catcher uh was working on his pitch come and he airmeled RC from about 45 ft away It was simply a terrible throw Nationals hope would be that wild throwing 60 ft 6 in So Abrams digs in the two- two pitch coming home Swing and it’s popped up behind the plate Wford ranging back This one is out of his reach and over the screen It’s still two and two What about all the struggles to get pitchers to pitch in Colorado or even there he is third in franchise history with 67 wins Aaron Cook the most with 72 It’s a ball outside three and two He and Darosa Jimenez guys who had success pitching in Denver It’s a short list It’s a 3-2 pitch in the dirt C Abrams draws a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning I like that bring James Wood to the plate Whenever he steps into the batters box that means here comes the lumber crafted by Ace Trim Carpentry Value to your home building process and helping you sell homes faster East Trim Carpentry home builders trade partner Wood had a couple of hits and a homer in game one Last night was hitless but drew two walks Abrams at first You can run on Marquez A turn and a throw over Toliad makes the catch No tag opponents have stolen 14 of 15 this year on Marquez and Abrams has been very aggressive He’s moved into the top 10 in the National League in steals Here’s the set at the belt He’s off to the races Pitch is outside The throw from Fulford is high A jumping catch made by Ritter with no tag So Abrams steals his fourth base in this series and his 15th of the year It’s immediately in scoring position with a 10 count on Wood now moves into a tie for eighth in the National League in steals with Fernando Tatis Jr the Padres’s James Wood all over the NL leaderboard Tied for sixth in homers Tied for sixth in RBI’s tied for sixth in walks Here’s the pitch Breaking ball in for a strike 18 homers 51 driven in He’s also tied for six with 18 doubles He’s sixth in everything Here’s the set Marquez deals check swing That’s off speed A curve there for a strike One and two Off field plays Wood the other way Abrams at second and no outs Set at the belt Check on the runner and the one-two to the plate Check swing just outside has two walls two strikes Wood taps his bat on home plate twice to the box Those long arms He stands off the plate Get the arms extended to drive it out to anywhere The two swinging a miss Got him on the curves Is not a big strikeout pitcher as we mentioned this season but he gets wood on a curve for out number one They have got him really dropped out of that one Really good pitch So here’s Luis Garcia homered in the ninth inning last night A two-run shot his sixth batting 259 Marquez deals swinging a fly ball lifted to left Easy play for Jordan Beck Barely had to move and he makes the grab Garcia out on one pitch Nathaniel Low will come to the plate as we enter the heart of the lineup presented by the American College of Cardiology transforming cardiovascular care and improving heart health for all Visit them at acccc.org Daniel Low had a late home run last night eighth inning opposite field homer Then he nearly hit another an inning later doubling off the left center field wall So a two hit game getting his average up to 230 Need a two-out hit here in the first The pitch takes called strike Behind with a sinker Abrams at second after the walk and the steal but he’s anchored there with two down Marquez ready Kicks fires swing A high drive right field Got underneath it though Over toward the line is Hillyard drifting a bit He’ll make the catch So the Nationals leave Abrams at second through one inning at Nationals Park for an hour 46 minute rain delay No score here on the Nationals Radio Network Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term Today’s phrase is oppo taco Do you know what it means oppo taco A home run hit to the hitless in the series 0 for nine He’s down to 194 Five homers 25 driven in deep in the box right side The lefty hurls it in and a ground ball rolled to short CJ Abrams will scoop will fire on to first It’s in time and Doyle out on one pitch Parker putting up a zero He allowed a first inning run or more in four consecutive starts That coincides the fact that he had lost his previous four starts of 6.16 He got through the first inning So last time he did that he got a win Braves Speaking of Braves the former Brave Orlando Arcia who was there that night didn’t play with Park Atlanta pitch and RC resting the bat on his shoulder A strike over the outside He basically didn’t play at all his last month with the Braves They let him go and the Rockies signed him He has played all over since joining Colorado tonight He’s starting at third base for Ryan McMahon Here’s the pitch Breaking ball Parker gets the knee Strike two He’s even played three games at first base Played at normal shortstop positions at second base and at third We haven’t seen in the outfield which he did occasionally with Atlanta before he became their shortstop The O2 was grounded third baseline a sliding stop House pops up but can’t get a hold of the baseball and will just hold on to it So House saved an extra base hit with a sprawling stop to his backhand but again the maybe the turf a little wet there and the dirt and he actually slid along the dirt with his throwing hand and when he reached in to grab the ball he didn’t get a good grip on the baseball So went to plant his left foot and spike kind of caught him His foot was a little sideways to see how show off that arm from deep third but didn’t get the grip So better to hold on to it Here’s Sam Hillyard pitch Hillyard a left-handed swinger takes inside He’s the only lefty that Parker is going to face in the lineup Everyone else either a righty or a switch Hillyard homerred last night the Rockies seven ters 258 hitter overall in his brief time in the big leagues this year Parker sets the 10 Takes the ball upstairs Two and nothing So right now Billyard is not to defend against the left hand pick Runner at first Arcia the two That’s a slider for a strike at the belt And they they don’t unless they wanted to play you know RC or somebody in the outfield They didn’t really have a a right-handed hitting outfield option Demoniac is not playing He’s a left-handed hitter Was able to play Maybe they would have played Pitch is grounded toward the middle Could be two Garcia shovels with his glove to Abrams for the out The quick turn to first is not hit a little too slowly Garcia got it there fairly quickly with the glove toss and Abrams had a quick turn at second but Hillyard runs well so he avoids the double play Two outs now runner at first Yeah you mentioned RC having played the outfield They could have done that We’re assuming Estrada got a sore head after getting hit yesterday Here’s the rookie shortstop Ryan Ritter with two down no score Ritter hitless in the series played all three games at short batting 189 since coming up a June 6th Bench fouled back over the screen bitter out of the University of Kentucky Ezekiel Tovar that he’s fine young starting shortstop has had a rough year due to injury He was not healthy when the Nationals played in Denver in April He had a hip contusion Now he has an oblique strain There’s the 01 Ritter takes a fast ball high Won a gold glove last year and led the National League in doubles It’s a good young player Ritter getting his chance and they could play Arcia but they’re giving Ritter a long look 1-1 the count with Hillyard at first The pitch swinging a foul back Ritter took a rip at a high one and it’s one and two He was having a good year at TripleA 305 16 home runs take his time out of course a lot of that time you’re playing at altitude in the Pacific Coast League so get to see how his back really plays at this level you’re not always a good place to hit Mitchell Parker’s hometown not always great place to pitch on to the count here it comes So we had a line drive up the middle It’s caught by Arranging Garcia He was shaded toward the middle a couple of steps to his right and the inning over No runs one infield hit one left Middle of inning two Nationals and Rockies No score on the Nationals Radio Network [Music] Moments in baseball have been fand dc.com Here’s the pitch to Brady House House swings and launches one down the right field line but it’s going to slice foul deep to the corner House just a little late on that one for strike one No score Bottom of the second Von Marquez the veteran facing the youngster in his third big league game 01 delivery to house This ball inside corner for a strike at 95 House had his first two hits last night His first RBI on a single in the ninth inning Now Marquez started his wind up and then stepped off Reset the clock that you’re not supposed to be able to do And now the O2 swing a looping line drive shallow left that’s going to fall in for a hit One bounce fielded by Beck the left fielder and Brady House as his third major league hit all in the last four plate appearances Singles on an O2 slider backed up on Marquez running in So he didn’t get the great part of the bat on him but dropped it in front too cuz hits have kind of been that way Refrain in the big league There’s Josh Bell hitter from left side Here’s pitch He’s for a strike with Bell having been around the league few times and a little bit of time in the NL West with the Padres’s He has 26 at bats against Marquez with three hits but all extra base hits A double two homers It’s a lot of at bats The 01 with the runner gone is outside The throw is going to be wide and Brady House over slides but stays on the base as the shortstop Ritter was not there for the tag Brady House has his first major league stolen base here in the second inning House did not have a steal at Triple A was not the most acrobatic slide of all time and it was lucky the throw was off because he overslid the bag by a good bit He’s trying to do a popup slide feet first and kind of skid it as the base The 01 is lines to right center field chasing back and over the center fielder Doyle with a leaping running catch Oh what a play House most of the way to third Has to get back to second and he does Oh Doyle flat out robs Bell goes from left center to deep right center and with a leaf a lunge and a reach Takes extra bases and an RBI away from Josh Bell That’s a gold glove play for a two-time Gold Glove winner He went across and then angled back Great play with the leap the steps from the track Marquez throwing a fist in the air A house stays at second Talk about that Here’s Dalon L on the pitch Swing and a miss and a curve with no outs He’s got to be back at second to tag in case that ball is caught His read might have been that was over the center fielder’s head Here’s the set and Marquez delivers Got a pop up third base side out of play Again a young player with a learning moment A runner at second with no outs You don’t play it halfway or he was most of the way to third You’ve got to be back to tag He took off like he thought that was going to be over his head which if it was he could still score pretty easily anyway Even if you’re standing on second base Here’s the set The O2 to Lyall Gayen takes the ball to dirt Good play by Fulford to block it out in front of the plate with his chest protector Well a lot with a lot of center fielders Dave that probably is going to the most Jacob Young could go get that one House at second one out no score a two delivery Takes up and away Had some good at bats last night but had a tough 0 for five after his first big league homer Game one of the series on Monday Two balls two strikes Here’s the pitch Swing a line drive to left Beck moving over and he makes makes a running catch Throws to second House gets back in there as the throw rolls past It’s backed up by Tolia So Lyle hits a hard line drive out to left and the runner has to hold Let’s pause It’s a good play by Beck Not an easy play the way that was Let’s pause for station identification of the Nationals Radio Network WJFK FM and HD1 Manasses and WPGC HD2 Morningside Sports Radio 1067 Odyssey Sports Station Time called Hermon Marquez steps off Dave Jagler Charlie Slows from the Nissan Broadcast booth They’ve charged an automatic violation Marquez was saying “I couldn’t hear with my pitchcom device.” But the home plate umpire Jordan Baker says “No it was under 5 seconds to hear him say too late.” They gave him a pass earlier on stepping off with nobody on base All right Well now he’s changed it to a disengagement Okay And so he took away the violation Say he stepped off which technically he did So it’s an O count Here’s the pitch to Ruiz Gets in there at the knees for a strike The scoreboard has one and one But again Jordan Baker rescended the violation saying that Marquez stepped off So I guess the Rockies talked him out of it because you have the runner at second And now Marquez has been warned for coming set too early So we had a warning and the count still of some confusion on the scoreboard Here’s the set The O1 to Ruiz Pass ball inside corner at the knees 0 and2 Ruiz batting eighth in the order 252 hitter with a couple of homers Now Ruiz will take a timeout So we’ve got a lot going on We’ve had Yeah everybody’s confused Marquez was asking with the countest and and Jordan Baker held up a fist and a two a left-handed fist right-handed two So that meant 02 and have one batter timeout and one disengagement and one warning for coming set too quickly We’ve had a lot the O2 in the dirt for ball one All that happened with two pitches being delivered You had a violation rescended a disengagement a batter timeout a warning to the pitcher and everyone confused on the count except for us They still are Now they’ve got it One and two on All right So House at second One two the count on Ruiz And the pitch swing to pop up back to the left Out of play But I get it cuz it looked like he signaled violation Oh he did Did But the the Rockies talked him out of it saying no he stepped off and I think Baker realized that indeed he did So he corrected Marquez to Ruiz and a ground ball toward the hole left side It’s cut off by the third baseman Arcia He’s got a cannon He throws shot to first in time for the out Second inning in a row The Nationals had a runner at second with nobody out Failed to get him over or get him in after two Nothing nothing on the Broadcast booth Here’s Charlie Slows All right Dave here is Braxton Pulford to lead off for the Rock He’s playing in his eighth big league game He’s four for 18 for the year hitting .222 A homer and seven knocked in His third stick for the club Parker delivers First pitch fast ball low ball one Pitch number 29 Remember Fulford hit his first big league homer against the Nationals but he had some throwing issues in that series The Nets have stolen two bases on him tonight They remember that series Now the wind of the pitch outside Two balls in no strikes From Albuquerque on April the 14th sent back on the 25th and up for just two days The double header and then fall back again June the 10th for good Stallings was let go They carry three catches for a time Parker delivers Swinging a grounder foul outside of third Rocky’s third base coach Von Gideon on the lines at first Had three throwing errors in one game against the Mets It’s hard to do Now the pitch swinging a line drive up the middle Base hit into center field 93 mph fast ball taken back through the middle by Fulford Pitch was up in the zone about Bell High and out over the plate So a leadoff single Those three errors for Fulford are his only errors for the big leagues Top of the order now Tyler Freeman the batter A double to right center but left right there Leading off the game with that hit Parker from the stretch Kicks delivers The first pitch break ball low and away Ball wide and set up looking for two with Garcia toward the middle Straight up for Abrams at short It’s about five steps the bag at third field round toward left with a bit in right center Swing and a miss and a curve ball and the count One ball one strike A couple of steps to left center with a touch toward the line but right fielder Lyle is straight away Mo is holding against the runner at first Now the pitch for Parker Fast ball seemed to be right there just a hair inside and the count is two and one Mitchell Parker 25 years of age 64 245 lbs now with New Mexico made his offseason home in West Palm Beach Florida Now the pitch waving swing and a miss The breaking ball with the count Two balls two strikes fooled him there Good looking swing that time by Freeman Our fifth round pick for the Nationals in 2020 Sinto College in Texas Here comes S He kicks and fires Swing a ground ball right at the short stop Abrams has it cleanly to Garcia for one up the first a double play 6-4 to3 the Nationals turn their 52nd double play of the year so two out nobody on the leadoff single erased Parker induces his sixth double play of the year so now Kyle Farmer will bat with two out and nobody on he lied out to left center field his only time out in the first inning his 20th started at second base for the Rockies Parker delivers in there called strike He’s played all over Starting nine games at short nine games at first another at third up with the Dodgers pitch That one’s low Balling a strike Robert came up as a catcher with the Dodgers some second base and Cincinnati played multiple position has two years with Minnesota doesn’t catch it now the pitch swing and a line drive shallow right center that’s going to fall in at base end comes up to get it Harvard jogs around first and will make the turn and hold so the Rockies with their second in of the inning and their fourth of the game that’ll bring The left fieldielder Jordan Beck batted lead off here on Monday night Went 0 for three with a walk He did not play last night He was robbed of a hit on a liner that was over the head of CJ Abrams who left his feet to snare it Straightaway stands for back a bit forward in the box Parker delivers It’s too high for the curve ball Garcia again way towards the middle against the right-handed hit in second base leaving most to the right side of the infield wide open with low holding the runner Parker to the bell kicks and delivers fast ball back Two balls in no strikes Has been the primary left fielder this year for the Rockies His 55th start out there Now the pitch that’s in there Paul striking the knees with a curve ball Two and one Began the year with the big league club He was sent down for a little less than two weeks Albuquerque played in eight games We called on April the 19th Now the pitch That one’s just low curve ball and Parker’s behind three and one Michael Tullia the cleanup man on deck Parker 44 pitches into his outing hasn’t thrown a splitter yet Usually a bigger part of his arsenal is to rely heavily on the curve ball Now he steps off this engagement for the 3-1 count Three toes It’s mostly middle of the rubber which is unusual these days Pitchers usually pick a side He kicks delivers 3-1 Line down the left field line toward the corner That’s going to get down for a base hit Played off the wall by Wood Heading to third is Farmer He’ll be held there as the throw comes in along the third base line and foul ground Gobbled up by Brady House near the coach’s box came with a fast ball on three and one and the pitch was thigh high and Beck lines it toward the left field corner First 13th double of the year third hit of the inning The double play huge right now for the National Rockies have runners on second and third Fortunately Wood got to it quickly and took a pretty good hard bounce off the wall So he was releasing the throw and Farmer wasn’t even near third base No choice but to hold him Here is Tolio who was called out on strikes and a breaking ball in the first inning Switch hitter batting right-handed slightly open stance The pitch over the inside corner fast ball good spot nothing in one 83 miles an hour with a fast ball track A radar gun powered by JTF print with confidence JTF secures the page Parker sets and the 01 on the way Popped up foul behind the plate off the fast ball into the seats It’s 0 and two Runners second and third Two out Top of the third and no score Parker Cet Runners had their lead Second and third Here’s the kick Here’s the pitch swing and a popup It’s playable for the first baseman Nathaniel Low He’s backing up out of the outfield grass and makes a two-handed grab and the inning is over Little bang for Parker who gives up three hits in the inning There’s a double play and the Rockies leave runners at second and third They have stranded four men so far Middle of the third Rockets nothing Nationals nothing for the Nationals baseball Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following I really don’t know what to say I’m just uh so happy I gave something These people cheer every game on the MLB app and MLB.com The third inning of Nationals baseball is fueled by Club Sitco Download the Club Sco app and instantly save 23 cents per gallon on your first fill up Jacob Young leads off the bottom of the third No score Hermon Marquez first pitch fast ball A called strike by high middle of the plate at 94 miles an hour Young two for four in last night’s game It went off the wall in right center for a double Make it 240 for the year The pitch swing and a ball beaten foul off his foot in the box That is strike two It’s 0 and two with 30 hits including five buck hits He has five doubles a triple no homers and six runs batted in Basement back with two strikes Young is back in right foot on the back line of that right-handed battered box Bark delivers low inside part of the plate with a breaking ball The Ken one and two CJ will follow and James Wood pitch swing Oh gave up That one hit Wood or hit Young in the box One ball two strikes Another one off his foot He’s had one come up and hit it in the leg Here’s the pitch Swinging a pop up for the right field line Shadow coming up the right fielder Hillyard It will fall in for a base hit in Chad right along the lines Jacob Young fists an inside fast ball the other way to right field Nationals have their second in the lead off base runner who is a threat to run with Marquez not being good at holding runners and Pulford’s throwing issues that he’s had against the Nationals Nats have already stolen two bases Both lead off men who have reached Abrams and House have stolen CJ may take a pitch here Let Jacob run Abrams stole his 100th career pace of the first inning Young the lead and a turn and a throw over Young hitting the dirt back in It’s first to the base Bit by glove or does it oh regular Oh he does have Here’s a set and a throw over again He dives back handles a low throw with no attack So then that’s two throws over And at some point here he’s going to run if not on the very next pitch You would think right here Five steals for Young He has been caught on first five times Now the set and does not go Pitch Abrams tied away Bford flying up out of the crouch almost like a pitch out Yep Be going or he had a chance back toward B Now the set way to a bigger lead and the pitch Abs takes fast ball is low That just might have caught a break there That pitch looked like a strike at the knees And Young was off to the races and he stopped He He was early jumping and then second guessed himself Got a big lead now Now the set and there he goes Pitch swung on hit high in the air Fouled off third chasing is Arcia Long run He’s there under it and makes an over the shoulder catch Playing in or going back on an angle Makes a good catch There’s one away Doug probably had that base stolen with that jump A two- count AS figured he would take one there to to have a runner in scoring position Here is James Wood to stand in now for the Nationals Now that res resets disengagement Marquez can throw over again Here’s the set He holds He holds the pitch to Wood That one’s a fast ball Missed a little bit high Wood struck out and swinged over a curveball in the first inning Really good pitch Guarded down and in He’s deep in the box off the plate Open stands Now the runner goes pitches a strike The throw by Pulford and the tag He’s out Short stop taking the throw It was perfect by Pulford And Young is out two to six if you’re scoring The count one and one on Wood Fulford throws out his second runner in the season And that’s Oh he stole a couple Pitch in for a strike to Wood and I mean that was called a ball Two and one just low Hard to figure the strike sent out some pitches that have been in the zone called balls That one was swinging a miss and a count of two and two in the breaking ball 85 miles an hour Two out nobody on is now two out of 10 throwing out from this year in the big leagues Here’s the pitch Wood lays off and outside Marcus looking through his follow through knowing that curve ball was not a good one up and away Three and two to James Wood The wind pitch he takes Or does he they’ll appeal on the check swing Third base umpire Stu Sherwatter says no swing So that’s ball four to Wood draws his team leading 44th walk and the Nationals now have a base runner with two out and Luis Garcia Jr The batter Garcia came into the game with a six-game inning streak Out on the first pitch he saw in the first inning Did nine of 11 14 of 17 324 average over the And now the pitch That one taken low ball one Slider Marquette outfield swung the other way against Garcia toward left Left fielder back fairly shallow now The set by Marquez and the pitch Swag a lot drive center field That’s a base hit Wood will go to second as it’s right to Doyle Quickly on three He’ll stop there Garcia with a line drive single Was he in seven straight games that he’s had an up Nathaniel with two on and two out Nationals now with three hits low on an 01 Just got underneath one of the first inning and flyed out right fielder Hillyard toward the line Time called now we’re going to get a visit to the mound here from Daryl Scott the pitching coach for Rocky This trip to the mound and slow down in action is brought to you by Eer Bay We were waiting out rain here earlier Rainforced postponement elsewhere Articles of the White Socks and the Brewers and the Cubs All games in Chicago were rained out and the Midwest has been just besieged by bad weather today Detroit postponed at home against Pittsburgh And apparently that weather is headed this way but hopefully with the early start tomorrow the 105 game chance get in before that weather arrives in this area They will play a double header tomorrow A split in Detroit at 540 Play a straight double header Cardinals and White Socks are afternoon and Cubs will make up the game in August Happens when you’re in St Now the set of the pitch takes That’s a cold one Now the pitch Nathaniel takes at the knees with a fast ball called strike quickly down to the something and two of a final from an early evening start in Miami The Phillies with a four run fourth beat the Marlins four to2 Suarez is now six and one with a 220 ERA Not a dormy home run at four hits in seven innings Here’s the pitch to low swinging a long drive into left field That’s a base hit Wood around third being held up Throw to the plate A good one Knocked down out in front by Fulford Came away from the plate to get it on the grass Seeing that wood was held So now the bases are loaded with two out Be the left fielder for the Rockies You have to consider him when the ball is hit to him He is tied for the major league lead and outfield assist with seven His throat will be cut but it was accurate toward the plate If the catcher was back at the plate yeah if Wood tries to score Fulford doesn’t come in front of the plate It’s one hop on target He has a great arm as you said That was a really good throw Here’s Brady House with a base is loaded and the pitch swing He goes after the first one and grabs a foul outside of third on a first pitch ball I mean normally Ricky Gutierrez is going to be aggressive because Wood is a fast base runner but that one is right at the left fielder hard charging not all that deep and left Marquez sets house looks it over and bets ball just low to the outside One ball one strike So wood at third Garcia at second Nathaniel Low at first Two out Base is loaded for the Nationals Marquez sets kicks delivers swinging along to his left by Orlando Arcia Down on his back helped up by the shortstop Ritter He absolutely flat out robs Brady House of a base hit At least one run maybe two and the inning over on a spectacular play by Orlando Arcia Unbelievable That’s the way things are going No runs for the Nationals They had three hits and a walk A runner caught stealing They leave three men aboard And at the end of Future of Baseball takes the field at the 2025 MLB Draft Combine from Parker Hold straight to the outside That was two and one That saved two runs Doyle had a catch on Bell in the second inning that saved a run Rockies have played some defense tonight A team that is last in the major leagues in defense Parker delivers Swing and a shot off the middle but Garcia’s behind the bag and shallow center The throw to first in time for the out Getting out of the way of that one Unfortunately that was a rocket off the bat of Doyle Garcia shaded up the middle ended up on the outfield grass as he feel the ball I mean Parker just got his head out of the way I mean that was close He ducked his head just in time but that would have been very dangerous Doyle hits some tough luck Here’s Aria and an infield hit to keep third and the pitch swung on and fouled off to the right Now to play School’s almost out Free kids to a ball game Kids 12 and under get a free kids meal all season long courtesy of Mars Details at.com Parker Roxson hits pitch out of the way Swing and a foul off to the right And out of play it’s 0 and two Marcia back in playing in his 14th game with the Rockies 27 games overall this year And now the wine of the pit Swaving swing and a miss He was pulled on the slider and he’s out on three pitches for Mitchell Parker That is his second strike out in his second out here in the top of the fourth inning We’ll bring up the only left-handed hitter in the lineup Sam Hillyard out on a ground ball to the right side reached on a fielder’s choice force Garcia throwing to Abrams and Hillyard needing a relay at first Deep in the box open stance from the left side Parker winds delivers a miss Had a first pitch slider It’s nothing and one Parker trying first One two three inning on base in each of the first three Stranding four in the first three and the count is two balls and no strikes Field deep and a touch the other way Marquez delivers and Bell lines one toward Sh One hop Sprawling stop by Ritter up to his feet and the throw across the first in time for the out Another outstanding defensive play by the Rockies came in with a league high 63 errors and the lowest fielding percentage remaining team in the major leagues But you wouldn’t know it by watching the first four innings of this game Josh Bell has hit two screamers He’s 0 for two 107 Now Dalen Ly the batter he looks at the first pitch is missing for ball one Next pitch swung on into the air down the left field line This one is going to land a seat foul Count one ball and one strike Our injury report is presented by Anova the official healthc care provider of the Washington Nationals The Young on injury rehab with Double A Harrisburg game Swinging a fly ball left field by Lyall sending Beck back He’s there and Jordan Beck makes the play Ly is 0 for two twice hitting the ball to left field Of course it was a hard line drive Well Dion Young last night was one for three with a single tonight Two at bats one for two with a home run He’s done well in his first two games on rehab That bruis injury hit by a pitch to the face in Pittsburgh Here’s Kar Ruiz standing in Richard batting left Pitch over the outside corner Barely a strate Derek Law pitches on rehab at Harrisburg Pitches inside One ball one strike And told he’s going to start the game Martinez wants to go through his routine to get ready and go right back to the pitch Breaking ball And that one currently high two and one supposed to throw no more than 20 pitches Now the 2-1 in there call strike of the knees two and two He was saying lost ball What if I don’t throw 20 in the first pitch let him come back and face one batter in the second I doubt it But Dave also said if he throws 30 pitches I find out I won’t be surprised Two balls two strikes Here’s pitch Ruiz takes It’s just low Will count just with a curve ball Three balls two strikes Two out nobody on Bottom of the fourth inning Rockies and Nationals Still no score Payoff pitch Swinging a ground ball right side fielded by the first baseman Tolia who have taken himself to the bag And it’s a one two three The first for Marquez Both pitchers have their first one two threes in the fourth We head to the fifth Introducing Nationals and Rockies no score Rockies have five hits The Nationals have four Rockies have left four men on The Nationals have left five men on Ryan Ritter the shorts stop made a terrific play to start the last inning will lead off the fifth inning for the Rockies And Mitchell Parker’s thrown 58 pitches 39 strikes Back in with a playbyplay for the Nissan Broadcast booth Here’s Dave Jaggler Charlie Parker steps kicks and fires Swing and a miss Ritter goes after a curveball in the dirt Parker three strikeouts no walks He was that scoreless first inning give up a leadoff double but able to strand that runner His next pitch swinging a miss again on a ball in the dirt So Ritter has gone fishing twice Maybe throw him another triple up Raider taking a timeout and now Parker the hands at the chest He kicks and he pitches and they struck him out swinging on a curveball That one was in the dirt again Ruiz applies the tag So three curve balls in a row three strikeouts in a row for Parker giving him four kind of figured he might see another one Parker will face the catcher Braxton Pulford Wolfford had a base hit his first time up Here it comes Swinging a miss and a fourth consecutive curve ball Right now it’s unhitable again mentioned it earlier that Parker has not thrown a splitter in this game Is notable Here’s the pitch It’s been a chopping ground ball foul up the third base line on a curve ball So all five pitches in this inning have been curve balls Be interesting to hear why that is Maybe he’s coming into the game he was throwing the splitter 18% of the time So maybe he feels like he was getting beat on Maybe he’s trying to ending average Tinker with it Change it Average against was 283 Slugging 547 Here’s the O2 Another curveball Six in a row It’s in the dirt All one and two strikes So a pitch that he throws about one out of every five He hasn’t thrown at all 64 pitches Basically throwing two pitches Just the occasional slider is the third is one two to Fulfurford Swinging a miss on another curve ball That’s four strikeouts in a row and five overall for Parker And every pitch in this inning has been a curveball So this plan right now Dave if it ain’t broke don’t fix it It’s working Well the Rockies have proven in this series they can hit a fast one It’s Tyler Freeman A double and a ground ball double play Pitch on the way and he crossed him up with a fast ball right down the middle He might have been looking for the curve Just a guess Freeman the designated hitter Slightly open stance the right side Mitch swing a ground ball rolled Third base side foul That one called a slider at 84 I’ll put him in the curve Pitch track system is not foolproof No balls two strikes Parker looking for his second straight one two three inning He winds kicks and he fires Swing a fly ball right field sending Lyall back on the go toward the corner He reaches out He makes the running catch and he holds on crossing out of the side warning track So Mitchell Parker’s retired seven in a row We’re halfway through middle of the fifth inning Nationals nothing Rocky’s nothing On the National Radio Network take a hack at guessing which baseball player lifted to right center field fairly deep but Brent Doyle has it sized up Chai of the warning track He makes the catch One away Marquez held him down one two three in the fourth and he has the first out here in the fifth Turn over to the top of the lineup CJ Abrams in Atlanta Chris Saleed to go the distance He went eight and two/3 innings 116 pitches but gave up a two out single in the ninth of Brandon Demo taking him out The pitch to Abrams outside ball one rare complete game in the big leagues and nearly a shut out Braves leading 5 nothing Still trying to close that out One CJ takes high outside It’s two to nothing Abrams has walked stolen a base and popped up Marquez delivers That’s low on the outside corner Ball three CJ in a good spot Three and0 with one out here in the fifth Pitch on the way And Abrams checks up takes a strike and that one at the knees Thought it was a hair low but appeared to be in the zone Marquez a quick worker He brings it in that catches the inside corner So 3 0 it’s 32 Taps his bat Marquez ready to go The wind up the kick and the pitch So a looping fly ball shallow left center Doyle moving in calling for it Warrington Virginia native makes the catch Marquez comes back to get Abrams after being 3 and 0 Well this early portion of the game they’re delayed an hour 46 by Rain Each team had several scoring chances Now innings four and five the pitchers made apparently on the bounce The wind up the one strike offering This ball off the inside One and one Here’s the pitch Swinging a foul back with took a big rip and a high curveball Wood has already doubled his home run output from last season He had nine in the big leagues sitting on 18 All two strikes on the Natch Young Slugger Here’s the pitch up and outside with a curve Two balls two strikes Marquez trying to copy Antonio Sensatella last night Ira pitcher keeping the Nats at bay Here’s the 2-2 side Furball not close Gets the two strikes Marquez has been nibbling on Wood and struck him out on a curve in the first Walked them on breaking ball in the third Here it comes Swing It’s lifted Fouled down the left field line That was a pract ball at 96 Wood stands tall in the batters box Here comes the 3-2 Swing a crowd ball pulled first base side Just fouled Polio was a bit off the line Wasn’t going to get to it [Music] The count holds at three and two Outfield around to left and deep This be the eighth pitch Marquez delivers Half swing and a strike Wood is gone on a curve down So Marquez his second consecutive one two three inning both starters have retired seven in a row after six innings or more but only once in the last nine starts Let’s do it tonight The wind and the pitch on the way Half swing went too far That is strike three followed by the home plate umpire Jordan then he pulled one to the left field corner for a double putting runners on second and third with two out of the third for Parker The next batter Tolia to pop up to first Now the pitch swing and a away in the bottom of the sixth inning Nathaniel will be the batter He’s flying a right and sickle out Garcia coming to the plate one for two We get a station break here just a moment as low stands in open stance for the left side Tap in right center for him in the pitch high ball one Now the wind and the pitch swinging a chopper over the bound toward the middle charging in second baseman Farmer has it across the body throw to totally at first in time for the out two away and we’ll pause 10 seconds for station identification on the nationals baseball network WJFK FM and HD1 Manasses and WPGC trailing one to nothing to the Rockies Two out nobody on Brady out the batter Went for two with a single and drops a bullet up the middle A base hit to center field on the first pitch A 95 mph fast ball rocketed toward the middle So House has his second hit He has four hits in the last two games One time they got him out he was absolutely flat out robbed with the bases loaded his last time up in the third inning A rocket and a diving catch by the third baseman Orlando Arcia ended the inning with a national stranding The bases loaded now Warren Schaffer is out Oh this pitching coach is pitching coach Daryl Scott coming to the mound So we have this slowed down in action with a trip to the mound brought to you by Eizer Bay with Jake Bird throwing to the bullpen and out there is Scott left hand on the shoulder of Marquez his pulse ball off of Brady House’s bat has that sound Yeah the sound of the 108 mileph exit velocity and that one could not be caught by a diving third base Rock it up the middle and here is Josh Bell who’s lined out to deep right center field and then in a 107 mph skip up the middle fielded by the shortstop Ritter to throw him out his last set up in the fourth and swings the first pitch pulls it hard to the ground foul outside of first asard par the first base coat he’s been on it all night just needs to get one he can elevate drive on out of here center fielder Doyle couple of steps to left center Bell looks at the next pitch in the dirt The curve ball It’s one and one Bird ready in the bullpen Standing and watching now as Marquez comes set He holds He holds He kicks and delivers and Bell swings and grounds one through the hole A base hit in right field On the move is House heading for third He’ll be there without a play The throw going into the second base area and a short stop r for the right fielder Hillier So Bell didn’t hit that as hard as the ball in his first two at bounce but finds a hole through the right side of the net Runners on first and third again coming with two out Batter will be Talon Lyall Definitely the weakest ball he’s hit tonight but gets the good result With a chance and they’re going to go to the here at Nationals Park The Rockies won the Nationals nothing and the Nationals will go to the bullpen for right-hander Brad Lord Mitchell Parker gave them a good effort Six innings allowed just the solo homer to Michael Tolia with two out in the sixth inning He allowed six hits He struck out eight tying a careerhigh and he did not walk anyone 84 pitches for Parker 59 for strike And now it’s Brad Lord He’ll face Orlando Ariel leading off the seventh inning for the Rockets First pitch It’s over Called strike with a fast ball from Lord Makes appearance number 26 on the year Six of them as a starter Five holes No saves or blown saves Pitch way inside Arcia here The odd just able to turn away from it Florida has worked 50 in the third innings allowed 50 hits five homers struck out 44 walked 20 259 average against the pitch blowing outside two balls and a strike earned his fifth hole here on Monday working two scoreless innings two perfect innings with relief of Jake Irvin pitch swung on hit of the year to right coming in is lock he’s going to have to dive and he can’t get it and it goes by and it will roll to deep right on his to Sam will make the turn off of the ball as Lyall firing it into Garcia and Garcia into third standing with a triple A do or dive play for Lyall coming in Ball off the bat of a right-handed hitter is going to slice a little bit So he just could not get there but he could not get a glove or body on it to keep it in front He angled over a little bit before coming in Unfortunately with the dive played the single into a triple So now the Nets have to bring the infield in Sam Hillyard right left hand hitter the batter against the right-hander Lord and the first pitch looks it over in for strike Baseball at the top of the zone Hillyard is grounded into a force play to the second base and struck out 0 for two Lord sets and delivers Swinging in a miss Move the fast ball by him to the inside and it’s 0 and two Jose Pere warming of the Nationals bullpen Rockies have action in their pen Rightander Juan Mahia up No balls two strikes Brand Lord to the belt The kick and the pitch swing and a popup foul of the out of play third base side the 135 game It’s 12 and under can enjoy a pregame story time and score free battle gloves Thanks to Harris ter.com/family That’s Sunday July the 6th Another 02 for Lord He comes set The pitch on the way takes this one A change up away One ball two strikes Now the right-hander ready Runner off third The pitch swing and a f tip held by Ruiz That is strike three The Lauren able to punch out Hillyard The 97 mph fast ball elevated for the first down here in the top of inning number seven You have the escape hatch with this lineup They lead the major leagues in strikeouts Lord has the ability to miss bats Now the batter is Brian Ritter who’s lined to second and struck out swinging Infield still in with one out Lord delivers and a suicide squeeze a punt back to the pitcher There’ll be no play Lord will have to throw to first and Low will step on the bag for the out The batter Ritter in self-defense on a pitch up and in Hit his bat bunted it straight to Lauren and he was down in the dirt never been able to get up to run Got out of the way dropping the bat and in came Arcia to score and the Rockies lead two to nothing But that’s a safety squeeze in self-defense I mean with the runner breaking for the plate as she’s called it That was a suicide squeeze If he doesn’t get the bunt down RC is going to be out He gave up his body Lord probably should have just thrown home because the batter was in the dirt Take a shot to see if he can get the man at the plate Yeah he took a look and said “You know what i have no play.” Fast ball swung on and fouled off to the right and out of play But even if it’s a 10% chance make the play Ritter’s on the ground Yeah All to throw it home You could tag him out He’s sitting there But that to get that bunt down with a pitch that was going to hit him That was an amazing job by Ritter now The pitch swung on and missed And the count 0 and two on Pford with with bunting kind of being a lost start in this game to get a suicide squeeze bunt down on a pitch that was running inside like that in self-defense That’s a great play A big run for the Rockies now leading two to nothing Board from the wind up to the infield back Two out of the pitch Swinging a ground ball left side Abrams to his right Has it draw off balance on the run in time for the out that retires the side One run for the Rockies one hit The triple set it up and the squeeze bunt gets the runner home Seventh inning stretch time at Nationals Park It’s the Rockies two and the Nationals nothing take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following I and he bunted it straight back to the pitcher That was down to the batter’s box Now the pitch swing by Ruiz and a drive to left center field Doyle on the run chasing dives and he makes the catch for the out Brenton Doyle takes away an extra base hit from Katar Ruiz with a flatout diving catch in left center field Another amazing play by the Rockies tonight Unbelievable There are no words The Nationals have hit so much better than what their results are showing tonight Those are the results This could be a cruel game Sure Graham Pollson is going to have their expected batting average for the night on the Verizon Nationals postgame show Pitch that Jacob Young is in for it Probably be like 300 points higher than what they hit for the night should be Oh my goodness Here is the pitch from Mia and Young takes That is outside One ball in one strike Single to right and he’s fly to deep right center field This is Mahia’s 17th appearance No record 3.32 RA Now the pitch swing and a foul right side over the screen out of play One and two But he has one hold at no saves He’s worked 22 innings with that out Given up 18 hits four homers Struck out 24 and walked eight Basketball slider Occasional curve occasional change from the first base side of the rubber He delivers The breaking balls hit in the air to shadow left center field Out goes the shortstop Ritter He makes an over the of the belt again from the stretch kicks and delivers and Abrams sweetens it straight back Seven pitches in the at bat for Abrams Shittles out hit Seven to six Trail two nothing Scoreless until a home run by Michael Tolio with two out of the sixth inning Rock used the triple and a squeeze for another run in the seventh Basketball outside will count Three and two to Abram to see him get on and bring James Wood to the plate as the tying run Big pitch here on three and two And here it comes It’s high and away Ball forward Abrams works his second walk of the game and James Wood will come to the plate this Saturday Well the Nets are on the road Adobo’s taking over the Plazer stage here at Nationals Park from 4:30 to 10 Raid or shine Joy PJ sets by Dana Lou and Pedro Knight with special host knee high toward the inside Abrams at first with two out He’s being held by Tolia Field deep The touch the other way A he sets He checks the runner over his left shoulder The pitch to Wood and it’s Bat in tight Here’s the pitch Fast ball and it just missed to the outside Was close Two balling Three balls Two strikes to Wood Baker’s been pretty tight but consistently so Lot of pitches on the edges tonight have been balls So a full count Abrams will be on the move Now the pitch from the hand to right center field and the That’s good Apron speeds towards third He will come all the way to score as Wood puts it into second with the double His 19th two base hit of the year and his 52nd run batted in gets the Nationals on the board here in the bottom of the seventh inning He’s the top run night has gone That was an absolute rocket with Abrams off of the pitch He scores easily Get the run back and they have to run at second He’s getting right-hander Tyler Kinley up in the bullpen So another visit the bound from D Scott the pitching coach He was frustrated about that two pitch but that was just a hair outside It was really close And the home plate umpire Baker has been tight around the edges all night for both teams It’s not like one team can say “Oh you know you’re giving him that pitch and not the other.” It’s been consistently pretty tight He left that one belled high just off the center of the plate away on a T for James Wood So now it’s Luis Garcia Jr spy to right single to center popped to third Nationals fans making noise here now as Wood leads off second Mahia sets checks and delivers Swinging a ground ball to the right side of the first pitch right at Farmer The throw to first to Toddia will end the bottom of the seventh So Garcia right after the first slope of the mound Right to Garcia Backhand pick up behind second Throw to first for the out Turned into a bit of a tricky hop cuz it skialled off the slope of the mound And so Garcia in between hop to the backand makes a good play for out number one Yeah that wasn’t easy Got the short in between hop You’re right Rare to get it out on a pitch First appearance of the series for Jose is Kyle Farmer the second baseman Pitch on the way Farmer looks one over A knee high strike Rare had a heavy lift against Miami 34 pitches Friday night A rough outing in which he gave up three runs Then came back the next day and threw two/3 of an inning The 01 is low One ball one strike He had warmed up a couple of times since then but not appeared since that Saturday afternoon appearance Has been busy the he gave up two homers in the ninth How about this stat about Ferrer the 01 swing a hard ground ball to the shortstop Abrams has it a step to his left He’ll flip on to first for the out Carrer allowed a home run on the first pitch he threw this season Kyle Schwarber did not allow a home run again until tonight The Rockies are just homeing off everybody Well we go Let’s see if we can figure out the Beck makes the grab and House is two for four So two down Here’s Josh Bell Bell as much as any national tonight has hit in tough luck had Brent Doyle make a terrific running catch to Rob Bell of extra bases and an RBI in the second inning And then Ritter the shortstop made a good play on a shot up the middle and then the ball that Bell hit the least snuck through for a seeing eye hit So he’s one for three Kenley is going to step off They’ve got to use a mound visit here with nobody on base and they will otherwise it would have been a clock violation Fuller to the mound Jacler Charlie Slows Arcia and Hillyard Lutus first base side of the rubber fires to Doyle and break the ball is in over the inside corner Doyle is 0 for 12 in the series but he earned his check tonight defensively Couple win again three to one Rockies who came in just 14 wins have three wins in a row in this series and four straight overall Welcome to the Verizon Nationals postgame show Following game three Grant Pollson is standing by Take your calls at 8006361067 Mitchell Parker taking on the veteran right-hander Herman Marquez And Parker was able to get through a first inning unscathed for one of the few times in recent starts gave up a leadoff double to Tyler Freeman who got three consecutive outs including a good leaping catch by CJ Abrams to end top of the first inning Nationals in the bottom of the first inning had a CJ Abrams leadoff walk and a stolen base Nationals early in this game could not move runners along James Wood struck out Garcia flyed to left and Nathaniel Low fly to right The Nationals didn’t score Parker pitched a scoreless second inning and again the Nationals had a chance in the bottom of the second Brady House led off with a bloop single and he stole second for his first big league steal The theme of the night was the Nationals getting robbed by the Rockies defensively and the first of those was Josh Bell who had a seemingly an extra base hit to right center field but Brenton Doyle the gold glove winner made a great running catch in the alley Brady House was not tagging up He was halfway between second and third so he had to stay at second with one out Dalen Lyle lined out to left and Kar Ruiz grounded out Mitchell Parker pitched around trouble stranding runners at second and third In the top of the third and the game stayed scoreless The bottom of the third was a real dagger of an inning for the Nationals Jacob Young led off with a single The Nationals were running wild on Hermon Marquez but after a CJ Abrams popup Young was caught stealing second So Young is just 5 for 11 in stolen bases this season Nationals restarted a rally James Wood singled Luis Garcia singled Wood to second And then Nathaniel Low singled to load the bases with Wood unable to score against Jordan Beck the great arm in left field Some Nationals had the bases loaded Brady House at the plate This turned out to be perhaps the play of the game Two out bases loaded for the Nationals Marquez sets kicks delivers swinging along to his left by Orlando Down on his back helped up by the shortstop He absolutely flat out robs Brady House of a base hit At least one run maybe two And the inning over on a spectacular play by Orlando Arcia Unbelievable Of all the times the Nationals would get robbed that one definitely stung the most From there both starters settled in Mitchell Parker working his curveball Did not throw splitters tonight at all It was curveball after curveball He struck out four consecutive Rockies over the fourth and fifth innings and he had two one two three frames Same goes for the Nationals They went out one two three against Marquez in the fourth and fifth And then Parker got two strikeouts in a row to start the sixth inning So Parker was at seven Ks He was one out away from six shutout innings But the man who began the series coming up from Triple A did it to the Nationals again Michael Tolia Parker delivers swinging a fly ball to left field deep sending Wood back way back looking up and it’s gone into the Rockies bullpen in left center field So Michael Tolia who had a two home run game last night as his third home run of the series That is five hits for him in the series in 12 at bats including three home runs And the scoreless tie ends here in the top of the sixth inning with a two out solo homer for Tuli His ninth of the year It’s the Rockies one and the Nationals nothing Nationals will try to answer back in the bottom of the six They had a pair of two out singles from Brady House who had a two- hit game and Josh Bell putting runners at first and third Rockies take Hermon Marquez out bring in Jake Bird and Bird retires Dalen Lyle in a ground out stranding runners at the corners Then in the seventh inning leadoff batter Orlando Arcia against Brad Lord Hit a slicing drive to right Dalen Lyle didn’t get the best read He attempted a diving catch and never got a glove on the ball That turns a single into a triple Two batters later the Rockies pull off the rare these days suicide squeeze And the pitch running inside on Ryan Ritter And in self-defense he got the bunt down ended up down in the dirt but it was a successful squeeze bunt because RCA scored and the Rockies with a two nothing lead after 6 and a half Brent Doyle made another sliding catch to rob Kbert Ruiz in the seventh inning but with two down the Nationals rallied CJ Abrams worked a good at bat for a walk and James Wood stepped to the plate next So Kevin Abrams will be on the move Now the pitch from within swap to right center field in the that’s going to a speeds towards third He will come all the way to score as wood puts into second with the double His 19th two base hit of the year and his 52nd run batted in gets the Nationals on the board here in the bottom of the seventh inning Keeps the time at second with two It’s the Rockies two and the Nationals one Nationals with the chance with the tying run at second Luis Garcia the batter Garcia swung it a first pitch slider from Juan Mahia Grounded out to the second baseman leaving Wood at second Jose a Ferrer came on for the eighth inning got the first two outs but then surrendered a solo homer for Jordan Beck The Rockies with their 12th home run in three games in the series and a 3-1 advantage Tyler Kinley worked the 123 eighth inning and then Seth Halverson the flamethrowing closer struck out Dalon Lyall retired Kar Ruiz on a line out and then threw a first pitch so far behind Alex Call it’s almost indescribable and he threw three consecutive strikes call never took the bat off his shoulder 102 mph fast ball over the outside corner ended the game and the Nationals their 11th consecutive loss Rockies win it three to one nationals will try to salvage one game on the series and put an end to this miserable skid tomorrow with a 105 game 1235 Nats on deck Trevor Williams against the rookie Chase Golander Up next we’ll bring in Grant Back here at Nationals Park the Branson Nationals postgame show with Grant Paulson all in to talk about this one 8006361067 8006361067 Grant we see all types of games over the course of a season and many seasons And if you were just taking this game by itself and not be in the midst of this losing streak you go “Okay well they played well This is just a night where the Rockies played unbelievable defense despite being the team that’s been the worst fielding team in baseball Unbelievable Yeah it’s hard to explain the luck they had tonight I know that that’s not going to butter the bread for frustrated fans as they’re waiting on a win to break up an 11ame skid They don’t want to sit here on their way home in traffic and hear me talk about how hard the Nats hit the ball But to your point if there wasn’t 10 losses that preceded this one I think you kind of look at this as you got unlucky process was pretty good you try again tomorrow They had 11 balls batted at 99 miles an hour or more which are rockets and only four games What was their You spent time before the game during the delay talking about expected batting average What would that be for tonight well this this is a perfect example of where you can hit rockets and get nothing to show for it Absolutely right And what we talked about before the game to your point Charlie was as a team this year their batting average is 22nd in baseball their expected batting average is fourth in Major League Baseball Tonight they had a three unbelievable a 320 expected batting average and they had one run to show for it They had 10 batted balls over 100 in game one of the series So there’s no doubt they are hitting into some bad luck at this point but at some point someone’s got to come through with a big at bat You got to string a couple of hits together They’ve got to manufacture runs They had another caught stealing for Jacob Young That’s three in a row He’s been thrown out six out of 11 times this year They got to figure it out They got to get a win We sound like a broken record but you get six innings in one run for Mitchell Parker who has a season high in strikeouts You got to make that count for something Yeah he was really good I mean it it was interesting and I’ll be curious to see if he’s asked about it There was there were no splitters tonight He threw the splitter uh in the in the trash can and it was going heavy curveball and we’ll see is that something specific to him and what he’s feeling or is that to this lineup you know knowing that they did damage last night in fast ball you know struggled with Sroka’s breaking ball but hit his fast ball They hit homers off the bullpen fast balls and maybe that was the thing there to try to mix it up But you know the the one guy who homered against him Tolia was sitting on a curveball You had the hitter before first three pitches were curveballs He looked at a fast ball right down the middle Yeah But when once it got to two and0 on Ti he missed with two curves I think Tuli was just saying you know what I’m going to sell out on a curveball and he hit it out because he’s thrown so many and he had tripled up on it several times in the game already But it’s tough to second guess Parker’s throwing a curveball there because the curveball was so good for him But that just that that’s the one that cost him in a nothing nothing game If you you had some margin to play with if you’re you know if you’re up three to nothing you give up a solo homer on a curveball So what but then you’re going hey one pitch cost you the loss right you usually say well one run solo homer doesn’t beat you You know but you know you look at the run that end up being the the margin of difference You have the ball hit by Arcia and Dale and Lyall little bit of a you know ciruitous route to get to it and then it’s do or die to dive for it and can’t knock it down Ends up being a triple and then you know crazy thing when when you’re seeing Ritter up there after Hillyard struck out they put the suicide squeeze on and the pitch is right at the hitter It’s either going to hit his bat or hit him one or the other And he’s falling down as he bunts the ball back He’s down at the back of the batters box and RC is crossing in front of him to score Unbelievable And it was deep tape too right because you’re as he squares and comes around you’re coming up and in toward the bat Everything was perfect and it ended up being really unlucky because the Nats kind of froze as you got a body at the plate and the the squeeze was on the Parker on the splitter Dave on the year He’s thrown almost 20% splitters I know this season pointed that out So they’re throwing one That be late They tracked him for one out of his 84 pitches Yeah Okay Cuz it was zero most of the night I must have snuck by me at the kne the last batter but uh he he was at none most of the night And the splitter was like what a 540 slugging percentage So maybe that’s why he put it on the shelf Maybe he’s working to reinvent it You know different different uh type of movement on it since it hasn’t been good lately So go what’s been better And his curve ball was devastating at times I don’t know a lot about a lot I know that if you got a 550 slug against one of your pitches you should throw it less So that’s a good plan I think whatever they did and and frankly like he’s had a couple of starts especially early in the year You guys remember first four or so trip
