Should the Capitals Sign Jack Roslovic? Washington’s Offseason Strategy Breakdow
on today’s show what kind of changes can we expect from the Capitals as July first looms i’ll discuss next on this edition of Locked on Capitals [Music] you’re Locked On Capitals your daily podcast on the Washington Capitals part of the Locked On Network your team every day well hello and welcome into this edition of Locked On Capitals part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day my name is Dan Holy i’ve covered the Capitals for the last three seasons for Locked On and various other outlets before that i’m also the host of the weekly show called The Capitals Minute Cast available wherever you find your podcasts and as always I want to thank you for making this your first listen of the day so in this edition of Locked On Capitals July 1st is getting closer and closer and closer and the Capitals have big questions to answer do they want to take a big hack or should they aim more towards a youth movement i’ll talk about that a bit later it does appear that Man Japan is on his way out uh who do the Capitals plan to acquire to fill that hole i’ll talk about that uh but just to get it going here another intriguing name that is cycling around out there is Jack Rosavik uh would he be a smart fit in DC um as I was saying off the top there is that it does appear that Mapani is on his way out and I’ve heard that Radish could be on his way out and there’s a lot of different players in flux here some of them even under contracts they could get traded out of town uh so Jack Roselvic let’s dive into that in segment number one and talk about would he be a good fit for the Capitals and like I say that was one of the names that’s kind of been floating around out there is Jack Rosavic uh it seems like it could be a good fit uh he’s not going to move the needle the needle say like a big time free agent splash I don’t think uh but if you’re the Capitals and you’re trying to uh walk this tight rope between staying competitive and getting younger I think that Rosik honestly makes a lot of sense and um you know I think that the Capitals have some things they need to take care of that they do want to make some additions is it that big hack do they try to develop the youth uh that is on this team but I think it’s not just that if you want to even go up higher and get a 30,000 foot view they also have to try to take care of Conor Mcichael and Marty Farravari that it’s good and it’s fun to think about sometimes that this big player that they could acquire out there just this big sexy name around the NHL i don’t think that’s necessarily the right tactic uh for the Capitals to to make it could be but I don’t think necessarily the case so The Athletic pointed out uh that Roselovic is set to hit free agency now he wrapped up a pretty solid year with the Hurricanes 22 goals 17 assists 39 points in 81 games not too bad uh I think that would be a good upgrade and um you know again it’s all a matter of you know taking a look at your internal options i think that I would try to do that first but you almost kind of have to bring in a guy uh to fill potential holes like say Mjapani uh or say that that Radish is on the move that you can’t put all your eggs in the youth basket if those uh young players aren’t up for you know what we had hoped for you know see Hendricks Lop here before where we thought it was his year and got sent down to Hershey uh but as he pointed out uh that uh he could potentially be a good fit another name being circulated out there uh he also had a 54.1 FA uh faceoff percentage uh which is helpful and a shooting percentage over 15% um so again I think that you know ostensibly that could be a good fit for this team but where it gets interesting for the Capitals is he averaged about 13 and a half minutes a night uh playing both center and wing uh and why is that intriguing i think that we can talk about that a little bit more is what do we know that there is a lot of question marks surrounding the third line there’s even more questions about who is going to play that third line center position and I think if there’s one player internally on the caps right now that’s you know a front runner right now is Connor Mcichael uh played at the second line left wing but his native position is the center position and I think that he is going to get the first crack at it so where Ross Lavik is intriguing is say the Capitals do try out Conor Mcichael at center and say for some reason he doesn’t work uh then you could potentially put Ross Levik in at center or say that Conor Mcichael does thrive uh at the center position well he can play wing as well so in a lot of ways winw win i think he could definitely be a frontr runner uh for the Capitals uh Roselvic um he gives you that insurance uh he’s fast he’s skilled and has playmaking instinct hockey IQ that’s not something that every hockey player has uh you like to think that once they make it to the NHL level that they should have some pretty good uh you know hockey IQ or it should be a high hockey IQ but I think some players kind of like TJ Oshi in particular Ryan Leonard you know those are two players that come to mind they see the ice very well so I think that could be an intriguing name but again you’re not paying 6 million here this is a depth ad a shortterm stabilizer he won’t block a prospect he fits the timeline and I think that he does as you know sometimes you know especially and what am I talking about uh blocking a prospect is I’m talking about the net minding position for example is that we know that Logan Thompson uh is locked in there for years and we know that Charlie Lingren is even though you know we have a pretty full pipeline uh it was said that Klay Stevenson was going to be the net minder of the future but you know if they in fact play out their uh full contract well Klay Stevenson uh he is going to be quite an old player by that point in hockey terms relatively speaking so um I think that of course you don’t want to you know uh make your team around young prospects and what about this guy you want to put together a team that’s going to give you the best chance at winning uh so what I’m saying is is that the note minding thing is good uh LT and Charlie that’s the best scenario but to bring it back to this here um is that if you have Ross Leavic on this team uh that still presents an opportunity uh for Leonard Crystal um you know these kind of guys Miro that he’s not going to stand in the way of progress be because he is going to be viewed as I guess a somewhat short-term solution so all things considered uh if I’m Chris Patrick I would definitely pursue this um I would expect that there are other teams that are going to be vying for his services as well but all things considered uh I think he would be a great fit for the Capitals you know honestly I’ve done quite a few of these over the summer and a lot of ways I think might be the best option for the Capitals right now i know that you want to uh you know hear the big sexy name like Brad Marshand or you know we’ve heard about uh who else march or so we’ve heard about uh all these different players around the NHL but it’s all about it’s not getting caught up in fantasy it’s getting caught up in reality and what is ultimately going to better the Capitals next year that uh can even take them to the next level they made it to the second round of the playoffs but I’m not content with that what I want for the Capitals is to make a deep push and do something crazy like win a Stanley Cup uh I’m loving it all right so coming up here after the break all signs point to Maapane out the third line is up for grabs i’ll discuss straight ahead looking for a snack that’s both delicious and nutritious crack into a good source of protein with Wonderful Pistachios wonderful Pistachios is one of the highest protein nuts each 1oz serving has six grams of protein giving you over 10% of your daily value plus they’re packed with fiber and better for you unsaturated fats to help you keep feeling fuller longer and why I like wonderful pistachios I’m guilty of this i bring my lunch and I put a sandwich and some other things and I’m thinking to myself that’ll be good but when break time comes and I reach into it I’m thinking to myself I don’t want to eat that on my break and I’m tempted uh do I reach for a donut or some potato chips until I found wonderful pistachios now I have a high protein snack that’s actually good for me and I think you’ll love it too uh personally I love the no shells variety it’s the perfect grab-and-go snack for busy days whether I’m at my desk on a road trip or I just need a quick protein boost they’re always my go-to snack i love them i think you’re going to love them as well so get snacking and get cracking with a snack that packs a protein punch visit wonderfulpistachios.com to learn more all right welcome back into this edition of Locked on Capitals part of the Locked On Network your team every day you can find me on Twitter it’s dancaps218 you can find the show on Twitter it’s locked on caps in segment two uh we’re talking about all signs point to Mapane being on the way out and uh to be honest with you here not too surprised uh played well not great and I think that uh you know he has new representation which I’ll talk about here and I think that he still sees himself as the Mapane from a few seasons ago with the flames where he was just lighting it up um and to be clear here he does bring a a great skill set uh he is an engaged player he’s some of the guy that the guy that drives for the net and just he’s an ultimate competitor he’s a chirper he gets under your skin uh that I think that you know he has a lot of things in his tool set but he’s not a standout in any of those things i think that at the end of the day he’s kind of a me to a slightly eh player you know slightly above average but not someone like we need to lock this guy up for the long term so I think that the Capitals are fine with moving on for Mapani i think that Mapani and his representation are fine with you know taking a look at what the uh open market will show let’s dive into this more in segment two there’s a lot to talk about the third line for the Capitals something that they need to take care of uh before the season starts so let’s talk about it uh Andrew Majapani will not be in DC that’s per David Pota of the fourth period now to be clear here he’s not the above all send i’ve talked about it on the show i’m just talking to you about one of the NHL insiders and what he had to say again we know he has new representation we know that he uh is open uh going to be a free agent this summer and uh I think that if he doesn’t see himself fitting into the long-term plans for the Capitals he will go out in uh search for quote unquote greener pastures and not totally shocking he had a $5.8 million cap hit and for 28 points that’s just uh that’s not a real great return on your investment um he was one of the players that was acquired last summer and you know big picture I take a look at what Chris Patrick or Brian Mlen did and I like it and I still don’t not like M Japani it’s just um it was a risky move right uh one that didn’t pay off as well as like a chicken or a pure Luke Dubois something of that nature so to kind of just give you the lay of the land here mapping out Eller and Radish likely headed out the door too the third line basically needs to be rebuilt uh talk about what I was talking about there with Jack Rosavic uh we know Ryan Leonard is in play here uh he earned a spot late last season so how is this going to to how is this going to manifest itself as we know that the other internal option is also Hendricks Lapierre uh for that third line center position i don’t think the Capitals are going to go into next season with question marks on the third line at all i think it will be taken care of are the players that are going to get brought in going to be the long-term answers i don’t know um sometimes unless you go out and get you know a marquee name you don’t know you know maybe they had a great year or two with an organization it’s a bit of a gamble you know Pier Luke Dubois was a bit of a gamble he played rather poorly with the Kings but all things considered for the Capitals had a bounceback season like I said Conor Mcichael will likely get the first look at the third line center position but that’s still leaving holes on the wing and possibly one at center uh depending on Mcichael and how he’s deployed uh if they go out and get that upper echelon center um maybe he’ll stay on the the second line left wing we don’t know uh it just remains to be seen um you know what Chris Patrick is able to do so how do they fit uh Jack Rosavik like I talked about sure but there are others out there as well uh the bigname free agents and I’m just going to rattle off some names out there um Christian D’vorak Trent Frederick um guys that can fill in as middle sex forwards and for let’s say around two to three million that’s doable uh wingers you’ve got options like Brandon Sad Brandon Tanv and of course internal options like Anthony Bavilier which I think um you know would be a player that I would put on the front burner uh to try to get him to I’m going to go ahead and pencil him in to like a two-year deal i think that makes sense for me but the bottom line here is Chris Patrick has to patch this up that is what we know for sure is that that was something that we kind of knew from puck drop from game one of the season was that the third line was a question mark we kind of crossed our fingers and toes and hoped that you know what he was able to patch quilt together would work u not really the case uh and we saw a lot of different players cycle through there uh you know we saw Scarosa we saw L Pierre uh we saw Lars Eller just at the center position on the third line we don’t want to do over that we want to go into it with at least the feeling like this is the best that we have uh out on the ice uh because he said it himself Chris Patrick he wants a dependable third lines he sees the Nick Dow line which is the fourth line and the third line which you know we talked about with Leonard and Eller he wants to kind of have two third lines and you know just in title but I think that he was just trying to impart what he meant uh that he doesn’t want to uh view Nick Dow’s line as a fourth line like it’s a pjorative or a negative thing uh so I think right now again to circle back to segment one I think Jack Rosavic put on the front burner circle that and again I’m recording this a bit in advance as I’m on the road right now so if he you know goes to another team you’ll have to forgive me but as I record this right now he’s not uh he’s has not been on the move or there’s no one that’s traded for acquired anything like that so as far as we know he is going to be up for grabs uh here shortly and I think the Capitals should do uh their level best to bring in a player like that uh because you know like Chris Patrick said and I you know echo that sentiment as well is I don’t want to go into next season with question marks like uhoh the third line again who saw this coming i just don’t think the Capitals want to be in that position again all right so coming up here after the break we’ll talk about big hack or youth movement what direction should the Capitals go i’ll discuss straight ahead all right welcome back into this edition of Locked On Capitals part of the Lock On network your team every day the best way that you can help grow the show is to subscribe to Locked on Capitals on YouTube and comment anything down below i am still on the road this week so if you are watching this on YouTube you’ll notice that it’s not my home studio and maybe if you’re listening on the audio side the audio is not as pristine as I don’t have my studio microphone with me on the road but thank you for joining me all this week there’s a lot to talk about with the Capitals going on up until now into July and all honestly all the way up to the start of next season a lot to get to so thank you for making Lockdown Capitals your first listen of the day so let’s dive into that in segment number three big hack or youth movement a lot of question for the Capitals um I think it kind of depends what name can they get you know on the trade block on July 1st or free agent or however it manifests itself what player are they able to acquire this summer whether it’s free agency or trade to make this team better and what is the perception of the young talent ryan Leonard we know is going to be on the Capitals next season where does he fit in is Crystal is he going to be able to take the jump to the Capitals or worst case scenario is he going to be you know just ready to go down in Hershey then you got Mirenko and Lop here there is a lot of balls in the air as they say so let’s drill down that a little bit more in the final segment of the show uh is it going to be a quiet conservative or surgical kind this summer or is this summer going to be the big hack i guess if the opportunity presents itself I think that Krisp Patrick will make a big hack uh he has not put his stamp on this organization yet other than uh the extension of Chern and Thompson that it would be kind of cool to see what he is able to pull off because there are some very interesting decisions looming one of them is whether or not to free up cap space and what do we know is that Trevor Van Reamed uh is going to you know possibly be on the move after next season a good player but um your sixth defenseman making 3 mil uh that’s tough when you’re spending more than 34 million on the blue line and um you know entering into a contract year as well kind of like John Carlson as well um is that um you know trade him now while you can um and get something in return otherwise if you wait too long you get nothing and the other part of that equation as well is that you have Ryan Chesley the young talent uh that is perceived to be one of the answers on the blue line of the future knocking at the door uh you might want to cash out on TVR with one year left on his deal that’s my take on it it’s kind of cold sometimes people are like “Dan you’re so cold on this.” You know I I’ve talked about different players and Carlson and I’m not trying to be cold i’m just trying to look at this i love these players don’t get me wrong uh wrong i like Trevor Van Remdikeke what he did for this team but I also don’t want him to walk from this team you know go somewhere else and the Capitals get nothing that just doesn’t make good business sense to me uh then there’s also Sunonny Milano which you know is a bit interesting he had this injury but we don’t really know the nature of that injury he missed a lot of time last season and I think in a lot of ways it was just roster management and I know that that’s kind of going into the conspiratorial waters here um but it’s hard he h he was hurt and even healthy scratched scratched a lot and at 1.9 million uh you could replace him with what I would say Ethan Frank or Andrew Crystal uh taking a look at it I think that Ethan Frank did flash for the Capitals again kind of like a lot of the other younger talent for the Capitals is it sustainable that’s the question and you know we saw Crystal absolutely light it up in Colona and uh with the Chiefs as well uh that if he’s willing to take his game or is willing to you know really show what he’s capable of or what we saw from him at the junior levels then I think that could change things as well now if they do clear cap space that opens the door for the highskilled forward Patrick mentioned uh someone who can soften the blow of losing Ovuchkin potentially after next season um as we know is going to be playing in the final year of his deal turning 40 i know a lot of people want to turn a blind eye and say “Let’s sign Ovetachkin to an extension.” Guys just come to Jesus come with me here he’s going to be 40 when camp starts um that’s not you know cra it’s not the end of the world but it’s just kind of being you know seeing the lay of the land just understanding the situation for what it is um there are some intriguing names out there again I’m recording this early so if this player is on the move you’ll have to forgive me is JJ Purka um which I’ve spoke of on the show that would be a huge swing it cost you uh probably a top prospect or two that’s where I like to pump the brakes you know I I know that you know JJ Purker would be an upgrade however I I just I really like our prospect pool i like our young talent and I I think we’re in a good position that we haven’t been for years i think for the longest time the Capitals had young talent and they just kicked it down the road for this win now mode and I don’t want the Capitals to go in a win now mode because it is potentially Ovetkin’s last year um you know if they can get a bigname player without having to give up the likes of you know Leonard and Crystal and Miro and these kind of guys then I’m all about it but if any of their names enter into the conversation then I don’t really want to do that now there are tiers of prospects as well i know that there are some people out there that are big-time fans of Hendricks Lapier i’d be willing to listen to offers on Hendricks Lapier uh but you know a Hendricks Lapier is not going to get you a JJ Purka it would have to be a bundle type deal um so like I say there are tiers of talent i think the untouchables of prospects you know who they are like I said Leonard Crystal Miro um you know off the top of my head there that I wouldn’t want to touch um but you know you could take a big swing out there there’s other intriguing names um you know just out there Terasenko Tyler Tfole um Jake Deosk these kind of guys that there are some intriguing names out there uh they’ve got around 9.4 mil in cap space uh depending on where everything lands now you know I talked about Purka and I’ve talked about the other names cycling out there um but I think that you know the Capitals like I said uh Rosavic for me makes the most amount of sense for me um as I think that you know the center the wing not going to have to you know sell the farm to get him here that makes sense that I don’t want to get a marquee name you know and marquee in quotes whatever that means for you um if it means depleting the farm I think the capitals are a piece or two away from being next level i don’t think that they need to go crazy uh because oftentimes those things don’t point out i want to point the the thing straightly at Nashville and look at the big splash that Barry Trotz made and what did it mean for Nashville nothing um that oftentimes the best laid plans uh go to waste or you know you could even take a look at the Vegas Golden Knights a team that historically just dumps all kind of money into a team and they’ve had some pretty good success here right but with that kind of money that they put into players you think that they would win the Stanley Cup every single year not the case um but sometimes it does work too uh if you’re watching the Stanley Cup for example and you’re looking at the Panthers uh that they brought in some bigname players they brought in a bigname coach and guess what what did that mean for the Panthers as well so sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t it’s not a one-sizefits-all just like everything else in life uh but for me just covering this team the Capitals fan uh I don’t want to ever deplete uh one of the top tier untouchable prospects you know I don’t ever want to go down the Philip Forsber road ever again i think that that is probably something that MC haunts uh George McY to this day is like what was I thinking there not too smart so all things considered I think the Capitals are in good hands with Chris Patrick and I know that he has an open line with um Brian Mlen as well and Ted Leonis puts a lot of faith into them that I think the Capitals will make moves but if you’re thinking it’s going to be this huge hack like oh my god and have have to take a day off of work to kind of recover from it I don’t think it’s going to be the case i could be wrong and ultimately I don’t want that i think that the Capitals are um you know a moderate piece away from being successful i think like a Rosik like I said um or something of that nature could be a needed player to boost him over the top is Marshand is that a big sexy name that like oh my god on the Capitals would he make a difference well of course look at what he did for the Panthers but uh again it wouldn’t come cheap would he want to come to the Capitals so there’s a lot of things uh to consider when you’re considering bigname players would they want to come here could the Capitals afford them and what would they have to give up to get them a lot of things to consider chris Patrick’s head must be swimming all right once again I want to thank you for joining me on this edition of Locked On Capitals your The Washington Capitals are aiming to retool their roster this offseason by balancing a youth movement with immediate competitive needs. One cost-effective free agent target is Jack Roslovic, a versatile forward who posted 22 goals and 39 points last season for Carolina. He could serve as a third-line center or winger depending on how Connor McMichael is deployed. With under $10 million in cap space, Roslovic offers an affordable short-term solution as the Capitals wait for prospects like Ryan Leonard, Hendrix Lapierre, and Andrew Cristall to take on larger roles.
Meanwhile, Andrew Mangiapane will not return, leaving a major hole on the third line. With Lars Eller and Taylor Raddysh also unlikely to come back, Washington must rebuild nearly the entire third line. GM Chris Patrick has expressed interest in adding both a skilled forward and another dependable middle-six piece. Whether through free agency, trades, or promoting youth, the team is navigating how to remain competitive while preparing for life after Alex Ovechkin, who enters the final year of his contract.

I don't know who is going to better the Capitals next season but Chris Patrick does.
Id like to see TVR traded, he has good value and can be replaced within our system.
Only swings id make is for a Peterka or Rossi. If we can get Roslovic on a 3×4.5 than why not.
I know the Caps ain’t as deep as Florida, but to think Florida before winning those cups went through a similar retool as the caps made a high risk reward trade for Tkachuk and paid of well and sign guys who were yet to be proven like Bennett, Verhaeghe and Reinhart and look what those guys have done
