am your host Marcus Moer you can follow me on Twitter Marcus_moer joining me today as always is Landon Mcool you can follow him on Twitter mcoolbcb on today’s show we’re going to talk about a Savon Rebell injury update we’re going to talk about the all quarter century team that was released by ESPN but Lynon free agent news in June this is this is rare it’s awesome we get players to talk about i I love it when we get breaking news on the show right like we yesterday’s show we got this news like as we were wrapping up um but man certainly wasn’t expecting it in a June show right like that’s just not something that happens around here very often um although you know these aren’t surprising signings right because we did hear that they were kind of kicking around uh some USFL people they brought in a bunch of folks for tryyous i think they brought both these folks in for tryyouts so um obviously they were looking around for guys but uh yeah just to get the announcement in June was was a little bit of a thrill when you know we’re not getting a bunch of news right now all right let’s start with Pion Winfrey who is the bigger name of the two players uh he went to OU he was a big-time recruit uh for the Sooners went to the Senior Bowl and performed awesome i was looking at some of the Senior Bowl clips uh yesterday that I that I cut up a couple years ago i mean was absolutely dominant at the senior bowl gets drafted in the fourth round because of some character concerns probably should have been a second or third round pick things happen in the NFL he goes to the UFFL and now the Cowboys sign him uh to potentially improve their defensive line ro yeah i mean you know not just performed well i mean I’m pretty sure wasn’t he the Senior Bowl MVP uh at least in the game you know which again the game is in He was the best he was the best practice player I saw that week yeah i mean yeah i mean it it was a complete performance by him in the Senior Bowl uh ended up you know falling to day two right like day three I’m sorry the beginning of day three is what I actually meant to admit because yeah fourth rounder uh and and and probably should have been a day two guy right like just based on talent i mean you look at the athleticism of the testing it’s ridiculous he’s got 35 plus inch arms you know he’s kind of more of the underside undertackle size guy like a 63 plus 290 type guy but with enormously long arms big hands an explosive jumper you know a mover you know has all the tools that you would expect for you know a top end undertackle uh but just kind of plays a little bit out of control at times it feels like you know he he just he feel it feels like he just needs to harness a lot of that ability uh uh and he plays with a lot of a lack of discipline which I think ultimately became his problem in the NFL from what I saw too is just it wasn’t that he wasn’t athletic enough or he didn’t belong on the field with those folks it’s that he couldn’t use his hands well enough to unlock a lot of that athleticism against that upper tier of of NFL athletes which happens with a lot of these really good testers in college right especially at the defensive line position they test really well they are elite athletes they’re fivestar recruits because they’re rare you know human beings in their size and speed uh but because they can’t kind of unlock their abilities with their hands or can’t unlock the techniques uh you know they kind of just get washed out in the NFL where everybody is athletic and they have talent uh so uh yeah the hope is he’s still incredibly young obviously there was some off-field stuff that kind of helped usher him out the door a little bit i’ve got that those by the way let’s talk about that uh just putting it on record what happened so uh in late or sorry in early June uh Greg Newsome his teammate uh first round pick they were actually robbed at gunpoint uh by an anonymous person never found out who did it uh a week later he was arrested for u an assault case u but that was dropped as there was they found there was no evidence that that happened and then a week after that uh he got arrested for follow following a robbery charge so just like a lot of stuff happened in two weeks the Browns release him uh kind of gets cleared of most of this stuff he goes to the Jets and then he gets hurt in training camp um he gets put on the injured reserve list and then that’s it then he goes to the UFFL again he’s extremely young goes to the UF UFL one of the better players there um one of the knocks on Winfrey coming out of OU and this is why somebody who is 6’4 290 running a 48940 goes in the fourth round is there’s just some general maturity concerns i think you’re hoping that a you know maybe as he’s gotten a little bit older and I mean he’s 24 years old you’re hoping that maybe he realizes hey this is my last shot at making the NFL i wouldn’t be surprised if he takes it a little bit more seriously now it reminds me a little bit of like just kind of reading through it all yesterday it reminded me a little bit of the Pac-Man situation where you don’t really have anything specific on the guy but he’s always on the outside of trouble like he’s always just around trouble which you know obviously I think you know part of it is bad luck but part of it is about where you’re putting yourself you know when you’re away from the facility so uh yeah you’re hoping that that side of it has kind of figured itself out and then you know that kind of lack of maturity i mean I don’t want to attribute that and I don’t maybe that’s not fair but but that there is a lack of maturity in his game as well you know I I I wonder if those two things aren’t tied it’s just as he’s become you know a little bit more of an adult and and maybe realized hey I’m running out of shots i’m playing in the USFL and I should have been a second round pick you know maybe he’s come to the realization it’s time to kind of take this a little bit more seriously and and and commit to you know not not getting in trouble off the field but also on the field working on his craft a little bit more which could unlock a lot of that talent and again if he was like able to unlock his talent like in Cleveland you know this this wouldn’t have been an issue you know he wouldn’t have been released so he’s got work to do on and off the field to uh to make himself a viable NFL player the other signing the Cowboys made was Robert Rochelle a former Packers corner i know a lot of Cowboy fans were upset yesterday when they signed a Packers corner and not Jer Alexander but that’s okay uh Robert Rochelle uh I asked locked on Packers host Peter Bukowski what he thinks of Rochelle and he said he always really likes him he’s awesome on special teams and he’s not the worst backup in the world as a quarterback four cornerback five when I first heard the signing and I went and looked at some of the the numbers I just think you know you look at all the corners that are on this roster right now that are banged up trayvon Diggs doesn’t play special teams kaylin Carson banged up doesn’t play special teams josh Butler does play special teams but he’s returning from a torn uh Savon Rell who we’re going to talk about in a little bit coming off a torn ACL he’s never played special teams he’s gonna have to eventually my guess is they’re just looking for guys that could potentially make your active roster give you some depth in the cornerback room and help out on special teams or potentially be a guy that maybe starts on the practice squad right and and and is a guy that you call up a lot and then eventually call i just think Yeah I think we’ll we’ll talk about in the next section with with Rell i the quarterback position you know just is interesting because of the number of guys that they’re signing and and the kind of types of folks that they are um or at least like the their expectations yeah and I think kind of going to Relle here I mean like a guy that basically we only played special teams on uh for Green Bay i think he only played like less than half a dozen snaps on defense one snap on defense one snap last year for sure and then I think he only played like 10 10 snaps the year before so yeah I mean basically since he’s been uh away from the Rams he hasn’t been playing very much defense but I also think that that’s an interesting thing right where he’s he’s a a ball of clay in the sense that he’s very much you know the kind of typical Cowboys quarterback he’s 6’2 190 pounds he’s got length right right he’s got long arms right yeah exactly mlay can’t help himself will Will Mlay just built this guy in a lab um and and you know and he’s he’s from central Arkansas which obviously is a smaller school so those guys you know could take a little bit longer to develop so I do think that this is a guy that Yeah you bringing in immediately to kind of potentially you know help create a floor for your special teams a little bit because because of all the reasons you just mentioned they have all these guys that you know the are in varying degrees of health and also have varying degrees of special teams experience so um you’re you’re insulating yourself like hey what if we don’t want to bring back CJ Goodwin you know like we want to bring back somebody that we could also feel comfy playing on the field if we need to is someone like Izzy Izzy Makamu who’s starting as your outside corner he’s one of your core special teams you’re not necessarily going to want him playing a bunch of snaps in that area as well so we’ll see i mean he is a amazing athlete he’s still pretty young but don’t expect like this to be Gier Alexander or anything like that that’s all yeah we’ll talk about that in the next segment why that may have figured into these plans all right let’s uh let’s talk about Savon Revel the Cowboys third round pick from East Carolina we got a health update on him we’ll give it to you next this episode is brought to you by FanDuel the NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night delivers highlightw worthy performances major momentum shifts and can’tmiss podcast we’d like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day all right let’s talk about Savon Rell the Cowboys uh third round pick we got we got an update from Albert Brier this happens every year where you’ll have an insider say something and then everybody will lose their mind so Albert Brerier from SI said that Savon Rell had a little bit of a little bit of a setback with his knee he didn’t go beyond that that’s that’s all he said so Cowboys Nation Landon of course freaked out everybody was calling their sources talking to the sources trying to figure out what was going on albert Brerier later qualified this setback that I referenced happened in the fall everything has been on track since so what do we think of Savon Rebell like are we concerned at all here this to me felt like a very familiar situation right because it was like if you actually watch the podcast like Albert says it very flippantly kind of you know matterof factually and and he phrased it in such a way that I I I guess as someone who podcasts every day like to me I immediately recognized it as he’s reciting some piece of old information that he’s implying that all of us already know like if he was breaking news or or saying this in a way like oh he had a little bit of a setback like he would have said it in a he would have emphasized it right and he didn’t like it and so I I thought I think I I recognized what this was almost immediately but I also totally understood because it was just said that way that that it was going to blow up and people were going to react about this yeah obviously he came back later and and talked about how basically what he was referring to was a situation in which Rell had a setback previous in the you know the recovery process before you know during the draft process basically so well before all this all of this was very well known this is not a new setback since he’s been with the Cowboys c can I add a little bit of info just from talking I’m I’m not a reporter i’m not an insider but just from talking to a couple people it was it was first initially reported that it was a clean ACL tear uh and that wasn’t necessarily the case and it’s not like he tore a bunch of other ligaments or there’s you know degenerative damage or anything like that it’s just that this it’s not maybe quite as straightforward as a recovery process however the Cowboys seem very happy where with where he’s at in the process and I think maybe some of these teams passed on him in the second round because they felt like you know usually an ACL tear now that’s a 9 to 10 month injury maybe it’s going to be more like 11 to 12 but that’s it we’re not talking about like anything that’s going to be super detrimental to his career well I think the key thing here is that this is not superseding information to anything that we’ve been hearing previously no it’s not so so this isn’t adjusting or changing any of the time positive timelines we’ve been hearing about Rell you know all this time so that’s all baked in this is a setback a quote unquote setback and again even setback is probably the wrong term because like you said it’s it’s not like he reinjured during training or any of that it may be just going a little bit slower than anticipated but again that doesn’t mean that he he reinjured it or he tweaked something it’s just and even the even the slower timeline is baked into what we’ve already been talking about right so like it it still looks like he could potentially be working his way back towards week one we don’t know but and again I I know it sounds like we’re just kind of himming and hawing a little bit but that’s that’s kind of what’s going on it’s it’s just it’s not a huge thing to get stressed about but when you have a national insider saying there was a setback people freak out for good reason yeah so the timeline hasn’t changed you can basically just ignore that yesterday happened if you if you’ve been up to date with the reveal situation i do think an interesting angle of all this though is that you know with the Rashelle signing they are clearly continuing to bring in more and more numbers at the cornerback position i mean the depth chart like it’s just they have a ton of guys at right now at the position where they feel probably feel like they could get them in there there’s only you know one or two guys that are you know kind of holding on for upside plays it it feels like everybody else is basically insurance plays for the the the for the Rell’s and the Diggses of the world so the quarterback position to me is is is really kind of fascinating because you know you sign another guy who basically isn’t really kind of competition for even Elim or any any of these guys more like he’s the kind of middle tier you know uh maybe later tier guy that is on and off the roster as needed potentially as a practice squad guy i think he’s fighting with like Andrew Booth for a hat on game day yeah I think that makes sense and again I I was uh I was watching the uh oh man what game was it the Giants game I think last night uh you know just right before I went to bed and and and seeing uh Booth fall down in the middle of the of the ground and leaving cut who was it caught a 60 yard touchdown pass wide open uh yeah they please bring more of these guys in i do think it’s interesting if we could real quick talk about the Jier Alexander situation because you know I just I I think if you look at the situation who he signed with and the deal and everything like he wasn’t taking that deal in Dallas guys like so all the all these folks that are like upset that like he didn’t come here the Cowboys didn’t compete like he took less money to go play with the Ravens the Ravens not only provide a situation where he’s playing with his former college quarterback but it’s it’s also like the Cowboys weren’t going to be able to offer the same job that the Ravens were offering right like they have commitments to their white cornerbacks two and three based on draft and and and money so uh you know even like even if the Cowboys were to sign Jier Alexander it’s it’s likely that if everybody was healthy he wasn’t going to be a starter on this team so no and if you go back and listen to the the first show that we did after Jaier Alexander was released we said he’s probably going to go to a team like the Ravens that can use him but not have to rely on him and the Cowboys they’re just not in a spot like that because of all the injuries they have in their secondary i just don’t think they wanted to add a fifth corner who is dealing with some kind of injury right now and then yeah again like I said and then if if everything does work out like where what what are you doing with him because you’re not starting him over Diggs or Rell i think if Revel’s healthy you’re not over over you know uh playing yeah no yeah so so I mean what are you doing with that guy i I just think this it wasn’t a great fit for what the Cowboys are doing especially since you know this these timelines may be shorter and shorter that we’re thinking of of how long these guys are going to be injured early on the season you just simply may not need that guy the way that the Ravens do no and I mean just being honest the Ravens have a much better chance of reaching the Super Bowl this year than Dallas does i mean they’re they’re one of the three best teams in the AFC i’m sure Jaier wants to play on a championship caliber team and not saying that the Cowboys couldn’t get there i just think the Ravens are in a t at least a tier higher than what the Cowboys are this year so and we should we should mention he’s playing with his former teammate Lamar Jackson when you have a quarterback like Lamar that has that kind of pull it’s going to be awfully hard to convince them to go anywhere else yeah and and again like I just think it it wasn’t necessarily what the Cowboys want to do they want to leave some room for those guys at the top to like play they’re not looking to create competition for Savone Revel they’re looking to get him healthy and have him come in and play because they like him so yeah u you know I I just think that that wasn’t the kind of signing that they were looking to make and what’s that meme with the one guy with the two girls this would be like the Jier Alexander jier with you know 31 inch arms and then Will Mccclelay looking at the other one who 80 inch wingspan oh that’s the one I want right there yeah you ask Will Mccclelay he wants to gamble on the guy i think Will Mcclelay and the Cowboys love nothing more than trying to make these guys that nobody else wants and turn them into like good players i think that’s like one of their favorite things and they’ve had pretty good history of doing that i think they’re going to try that again this year with Kyrie Elim Joe Milton Kenneth Murray George Pickkins the list goes on and on uh all right let’s uh let’s talk about the all quarter century team that ESPN put out this week couple Cowboys were on the list we’ll tell you who they are next welcome back to the Loton Cowboys podcast we’d like to thank you for making us your first listen of the day for your second listen check out the locked on NFL scouting show as training camps get closer and moves are being made hosts Kyle Krabs and Joe Marino will make you the most informed NFL fan this off season find lot scouting on YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast all right let’s talk about the all quarter century team here Landon so Cowboys had a couple guys on the list uh we’ll run through it tio made the uh list for the receivers uh although do you count Terrell Owens as a Cowboy i I think I I think I do you know I I don’t know i I’ve kind of gone back and forth on it a lot but he did have three pretty big seasons in Dallas yeah and we spent a lot of time talking about it and and you know hoping for him to do well so yeah i mean as much as you know there’s been problems there in the Eagles history there yeah he’s he’s he’s a cowboy okay uh no Tyron Smith at left tackle the the site I know they went with Joe Thomas and Trent Williams it’s not like those guys aren’t pretty good but uh they did put Zack Martin as their first team right guard uh over Marshall Yanda over Jarry Evans hard to hard to argue there yeah I mean I think you know it’s the Tyron Smith thing is tough but you you just happen to be playing in an era with maybe two of the top five left tackles in the history of the game right and and you’re also probably in that in that list short list so uh yeah it’s a timing of it’s a fortune but then obviously Zach I mean playing with some very good right guards as well but but I think it’s pretty clear that he’s the cream of the crop yeah yeah it’s easy i think the only argument that some I saw some people have on Twitter was that Larry Allen should have been on the list but it’s hard because most of tough period for for Larry honestly yeah cuz most of Larry’s best seasons came in the mid 90s and late 90s by the early 2000s he was a good player but he was a good player but wasn’t Larry Allen yeah that’s for sure yeah and I I I always agree like I hate when they you see guys that are in like these all decade teams where like they played like one year in that decade and because they have gravity to their name and even if that was the their worst year on the on the field it’s like why why would they be included in that decade like put them in the decade that they’re that’s appropriate right i also feel bad for the guys that get stuck between decades like you get drafted in 2015 you play 2015 to 2025 and you’re kind of stuck between two decades anyways uh the other Cowboy that got in is Demarcus Wear he was the first team edge rusher with Jared Allen ahead of Miles Garrett uh ahead of Julius Peppers uh I’m actually kind of I’m not I’m not saying he didn’t deserve it but I’m surprised that he got in over Peppers and over like Michael Strahan and over Miles Garrett over Miles Garrett I think is a little bit surprising because Miles Garrett is just unbelievable and a freak of nature uh I I’ll take him over Strahan because he’s a better player than Stray and I don’t I don’t you know I agree there’s also a national media bias with Michael St that’s fair and I you figured that that would have played in but I guess the Cowboys national media bias uh well you know what I think is that he won a Super Bowl with the Broncos and they have on the site they have a they have a picture of him in a Broncos uniform i see what you’re doing espn i see what you’re doing oh yeah when whenever it’s a bad player getting signed it’s always former Cowboys legend and then anytime somebody gets in trouble former Cowboy player that’s right but when they were like you know top 10 all decade team he’s like yeah he played for the Broncos he’s a Bronco player um any other Cowboys that you think had an argument to to make this list would you put Jason Whitten in there uh would you put anybody else whitten was the name that kind of No Tyron Smith is the first name i mean like to me like that’s I mean I understand how this is all ranged in the names and everything it’s so it was a tough uphill battle just because his competition was difficult let me let me name some of the names real quick you had Trent Williams uh you had Joe Thomas you had Walter Jones you had Jonathan Ogden and Tyrron he Tyron Smith just happened to play in an era where there was a million great great left tackles and Jason Peters didn’t even make the list that’s another awesome one former captain i think you throw I think you throw in Anthony Munes and you just listed all the greatest left tackles right true so uh yeah I don’t know i mean I think that’s that’s a tough list to crack into whitten is another name that I think probably got consideration there i’m assuming he did but he’s another guy who also played in an era where you’re surrounded by other guys who just revolutionized the position you know like it was Rob Krunkowski Travis Kelce and Tony Gonzalez tony Jason Jason Whitten has said Jason Garrett jason Whitten is a Hall of Fame player those three other tight ends are clearly better yeah and I think that’s fair you know uh and I’m assuming that by your Freudian slip that you that you were uh trying to get Jason Garrett in there as the coach of the uh the court no we should mention though that Wade Phillips was the defensive coordinator on this list kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator bill Bich as a head coach uh Wade was one of the best defensive minds of the last 25 years i’m happy he’s getting uh that kind of credit longevity is I think the most impressive thing there right just the ability to continually produce really solid defenses and a bunch of different schemes with a bunch of different players um yeah i I think Wade Phillips you know for a guy that is kind of early in his career living in the shadow of his very very famous dad coach carved out an Hall of Fame career of his own and in many ways surpassed his dad as a coach you know and I think his I and I think his son Wes Phillips has got a great bright future as well so uh generations and generations of coaches there it’s too bad it didn’t work out for Wade Phillips in Dallas because I do think he’s a heck of a coach and he’s an unbelievable defensive mind but I think it’s really great for just think it’s really cool that he’s getting the credit now because he absolutely deserves it totally all right that is it for today’s show we want to thank you for making Loton Cowboys your first listen of the day check us out on YouTube download the podcast wherever you get your podcast we are free Didn’t know much about Perrion except the off the field issues. I wasn’t a fan of the signing until I watched a 3 minute video on him called “Football and feeding his family.” I gotta say, I think I’m liking the signing after watching that. Could be something there
Camp bodies, let's be honest here.
