MLB LIVE🔴 St. Louis Cardinals vs Cincinnati Reds – Jun 20, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

hello baseball fans and welcome MLB the show has action out of the NL Central It’s the Cincinnati Reds taking on the St Louis Cardinals First pitch coming your way next just about set to go And our pitcher in this game Matthew Liberator and Singi we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure he’s more calm and settles in He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position And most guys they get a little tight They start to aim the baseball But for some reason he gets looser The ball comes out of his hand with more life And he’s able to wiggle off the hook of their tough situations and get his team back in the dugout Close but called a ball And it’s a ball and a strike Well second pitch of this game And already getting squeezed a little bit The one-1 is fouled off Breaking ball in there Got him looking and that’s the first out He was chopping at the buckle right there The way that slider made it look that was just nasty And now it’s Gavin Lux definitely scuffling at the dish lately Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month And first offering is fouled off Swinging a foul straight back swing and a broken bat roller towards third Picks it up with the bare hand He beats it out and the tapper turns into an infield single Did a nice job getting there Good throw but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw you know Yeah no question One gone runner at first and ready to hit now for Cincinnati Ellie Dea Cruz swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit Backto back singles Quick throw back in Lead runner holds it second with one gone I’m sure he feels really good about that one He put a great swing on that ball took the barrel right to it Nice extension as well 105 exit velocity That tells you everything you need to know about that swing Spencer Steer the next to hit for the Reds Outside low and it’s one and0 Well all eyes on the double play ball in this spot No better way to get out of this inning Lux at second Dela Cruz over at first with one away That catches the outside corner and the count one and one Two on one out Fought off foul Well you put good velocity in the head of the hitter He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds Keep him off balance That’s the goal And here it comes Foul ball still one and two count That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was That just misses Two balls two strikes to count Man oh man I don’t know how you take that pitch That’s as close as it gets And a swing and a miss now Two out Good late cut for the strike out there That thing really got in on him And you know the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact But that one right there did a whole lot more than that That was a really good pitch Now here is Will Benson And there’s the strike holding one Let’s go Matthew lifted in the air out to left Nukebar brings it in and that’ll do it Red Strand a couple Now the Cardinals will see what they can do There’s no score You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show Back here at Bush Stadium and towing the slab Nick Looo singing He’s kind of a road warrior Yeah I definitely say so You know some guys shrink a little bit on the road They’re so used to just having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment So when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark Brendan Donovan the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one And that one sliced foul and that’s a little bit high and a count two and one Swinging a liner foul off to the right just misses with that one Really good take especially with two strikes Foul We’ll see another payoff pitch That one misses So a lead off walk Well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall Very gritty Now it’s the short stop Mason win Breaking ball misses down and away The lefty the one and that one fouled off Gruer at first with no outs here Grounder might be two feed to second That’s one over to first Safe And now it’s Ivon Herrera And a swing and a miss there In the on deck circle you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball Last thing you want to do is miss a runner takes off Pitching for a strike throw there Safe Chris his wheels were the difference maker on that play Just got in there Yeah with Statcast’s help we see his top speed on this stolen base And that’s a big number I mean man he really made his athleticism work for him on that one And down on strikes he goes Two away Well that event seemed to be over as soon as it started Three pitch strikeout You’ve got to be better at the plate right there At least to foul something off extend that at bat Here’s Contraras now And that misses and that is ball one man at second and foul ball Next offering pop foul off to the right out of play Two outs and one in scoring position Goes down swinging for the strike out Pulled the string on the change up It’s on to inning number two in St Louis No score back here in St Louis New inning getting started and now the catcher comes up to him Jose Trevinho Trevinho 32 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2014 And the first offering a fast ball for a strike and that’s outside Larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one Pretty good strike zone Well reviewed by those we talked to around the league Yeah he’s an umpire He doesn’t get a lot of looks from players maybe here and there once in a while but he’s appreciated back there Swings through that one I think he was sitting off speed there Singy what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters i’d say off the plate away and down And why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball Swanging a popup went under it holds it in for the out As the game has moved along we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four umpires nicknames hometowns and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit That’s great Santiago Espel in the box with one away as he takes ball one That’s in there And the count even at one And he hits a ground ball right side and that’s just foul That’s off the mark Two balls two strikes All three Three balls Two strike One out Base is empty Foul ball And it remains a full count Three and two The pitch is outside and ball four Well a breaking ball in that 32 count Kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now Just couldn’t find the strike zone Digging in Jake Freilley and a foul ball Espenol the runner at first with one gone in the inning That one to first Steps on the bag for one to second but way too late Safe there Batting ninth second base Matt Mlan So the go-ahead run in scoring position Here’s the second base Matt Mlan And the first pitch misses for ball one Runner at second Two down And that is out of play Let’s go That one outside Two and one Ground ball up the middle Win fires to first on the run and very nicely done for the out Reds leave one We’ll go to the bottom of the second No score Back here in St Louis bottom of the inning and stepping in for the Cardinals Alec Burlson Burlington Let’s go Lollo back to work And that one pulled foul in the air to left center Fredel sizes this one up Squeezes it One away Batting six Third base Nolan So now it’s Dolan Aronado Come on Come on Sliced hard but foul Second inning here No score Hit on the ground to the right side and he handles it himself for the out Batting seventh left fielder at the play Lars Newbar First offering in the dirt and another ball Two outs Base is empty and that drops in for a strike In today’s game not that many fast ball counts but hitters still in the back of their minds they’re looking for one Two change up call right there Excellent pitch selection to go with misses inside and now three and one Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side That’ll find the stands The kick the 3-2 That’s ball four Tried another fast ball but missed the spot One of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best That is if you are the offensive side of it Pedro Pah in the box here lets that one go for a ball And a breaking ball drops in for a strike Man this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today Just off the inside edge That one fouled off Two and two and down on strikes And he’s registered three Ks in this one The Cards leave one We’ll move to the third with no score Well here we go Top of the third Scoreless game in now for the Reds TJ Fidel swings and blasts one deep to left center Over the wall and that’s an automatic double The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car Boo You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base Just no worries in the world You know what he put a really good swing on that one So up next Gavin Lux reached on an infield single his first time Foul ball there Well here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and heart of the order coming up right behind them This is where they need to get going St Check swing He went That is strike two man at second And that one gets past the catcher Fredel up to third on the wild pitch Even with a good secondary lead sometimes it’s hard to see just how far that ball’s gotten away from the catcher And if you can make it to third base pretty much standing up well that time he seemed to have a pretty good read gets to third safely and now he’s just 90 feet away from scoring Fouls that off to the left and will do it again Here’s a one-two and misses inside Two two line drive base hit and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead Big RBI for him right there A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head That’s what I’m trying to do Just keep that approach simple And right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely No outs runner at first Next for Cincinnati Ellie Dea Cruz That’s inside 1 and0 You know one of the most memorable innings ever for Ellie happened in July 2023 In one inning De La Cruz hit a two-out single to take the lead and then proceeded to do something that a Red’s player hasn’t done in more than a 100red years He stole second third and home in the same inning It only took two pitches for him to steal all three bases That misses and that’s ball two Two in one in the air Center field Scott Puts it away for the out And there’s one away Now batting the first baseman Spencer Steer Spencer Steer The next to hit for the Reds He was a strikeout victim his first time That’s too low Ball one One and0 Swing and a popup Foul territory for the catcher Fielding for the wall makes the catch and foul ground Got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick Front shoulder open Backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be And ready to hit now for Cincinnati Will Benson He’s 0 for one And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter and a swing He finds himself in a tough situation early Just got to try to simplify it Take a knock the other way if you can Blows the high hem That’s a strike out But the RBI single pushes across a run It’s now one- nothing You’re dialed into the show And we’re back Leading off Victor Scott We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it But pushing the offensive side for just a second Chris it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most Now a drag ball third base side And that’s a foul ball in for a strike and a count one and two Well he gets to balls that get by most people at that position Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away So the lineup flips over now Here is Brendan Donovan He reached out to walk his first time and that one wrapped foul up the middle in plenty of time to first and a couple of quick outs Now batting shortstop Mason And up next for St Louis Mason Win 0 for one He hit into a fielder’s choice his first time in for a strike And it’s 0 and one 0 and one And that’s down and away One and one And now two on one And that skips into the dirt First pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter Very patient showing good discipline Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count upstairs And that is ball four Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted him first base with the quick free pass Runner first with two away Ivon Herrera next up for the Cardinals 0 for one He struck out swinging last time That one misses That’s five straight The two out walk Got to erase that and really go to work on the hitter You got to go ahead and just let him steal if he’s going There goes the runner Strike in there Throw to second He’s saved Well that steel right there is wanting to take advantage of having a really good hitter at the plate Now they’ve got a much better shot at bringing home a two out RBI Swinging a foul out of play and he chases that one He’s notched four strikeouts now A lot of adrenaline We can see it right there And sometimes you just got to let it out That’s an outstanding job of taking that executing and getting out of a tough inning out of the fourth Cincinnati Jose Trovinho Trevinho in an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that’s providing the information So what we’re seeing in baseball so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines Tosses to first That’s the first out in the top of the fourth Third base Santiago Espol Santiago Espol the next to hit for the Reds Walked his first time Back when you played it wasn’t the empirical data we have now It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball Right That or just going off of gut or field What does it look like his swing is today what’s the pitcher throwing they are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound That misses the zone It’s a ball in two strikes That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count Base is empty one away Top half of inning number four Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again Oh two balls two strikes and that one missing low Fouled off again and it remains three and two Lace down the line Could be extra bases around first Heading for two And he’s in with a standup double Well he really had to battle for that one Man that was so fun to watch He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing foul One thing that was great about the approach his head was down all the way through the pitch And that’s how you do it One out runner at second in now for the Reds Jake Freilley 0 for one He grounded out in his first at bat Swing and a highfly ball out towards right field Scott makes the catch Tags up from second and he’ll head to third Now batting second baseman Matt Mlan Next for Cincinnati Matt Mlan grounded out his first time right through there for a strike in the air pretty deep out to center field Scott settles under this one and he makes the catch and that is that So one left for Cincinnati but they lead it one to nothing Bottom of the fourth Wilson Contras now up to the plate Desated hitter Wilson Contrarus That one catches the zone One You know these Cardinals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one They’ve worked three walks already so that proves they’re not anxious up there They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working Just missing there Now one and two Swing and a miss Struck him out Now five strikeouts for him on the mound Oh that high fourseam fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off They’re trying to stay back with two strikes Make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate good rotation through the zone elevate it a little bit get a lot of swings and misses And that’s a really nice job right there Burlson batting with one down Takes the strike He’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes Usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball Already two gone here in the home Talk about being able to dial up the velocity That first base over there might need a little pad inside that first base’s mitt Here’s Nolan Aronado He’s 0 for one Check swing called strike The Red Birds yet to pick up a hit here That’s outside and it’s one and one Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back Battling here as he fouls it away Two down nobody on We’re here in the bottom of the fourth That’s off the mark The countdown two and two And a pop off right side foul territory And that will end the inning Nothing doing there for St Louis still behind by a count of one to nothing And welcome back to the ballpark Top five John Shabi with Chris Singleton And leading it off TJ Fredel Liberator back to work and a base hit up the middle Man aboard on the leadoff single Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat Couldn’t get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle Timing was just perfect Got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it And now the designated hitter for the Reds Gavin Lux First pitch misses Lux 27 years old And though usually in left field today he’s the designated hitter Some guys don’t like not being able to play defense because it helps him to stay in the rhythm So for him to be the DH we’ll see if he gets a routine together Two balls one straight Nobody out Runner at first Ground ball left side Could be two Donovan for one back to first and that is a double play Oh man what a smooth double play That was a thing of beauty from start to finish And now the shorts stop Ellie Dela Cruz one for two back up the middle in a base hit and that extends the inning Well clearly he was ready to hit right there You’ll often hear the phrase short to it long through it and that’s a great example of it right there Got the barrel in the hitting zone early squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field And now they’ve got some speed on first So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion Slider for a strike Next offering is fouled back Dela Cruz leads off first with two down to the inning Hell there’s a pitch we haven’t seen in a while It’s going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants Cut on and missed And it’s a strikeout And that is the inning Reds leave one but they’re on top one- nothing Back here in St Louis we head to the bottom of the fifth Here’s the left fielder Lars Nbar Lars Newbar First pitch doesn’t find the zone One and0 No just missed Now on this three ball count down in the ball game You got to be very selective Take your walk if they’ll give it to you That one misses So a lead off walk It’s tough after falling behind a hitter or two balls and no strikes but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction Pah at the plate now and that’s inside You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one outside loan and now two and 0 Way to lay off that pitch down And a foul ball makes the count two and one The kick and the pitch Runner goes twig and a miss Save exact with a stolen base and the tying run is now in scoring position You know nights like this when it seems harder to score I like the call to put them in motion and try to steal the base Ball’s not carrying No home runs so far So trying to manufacture some offense like this may be the way to go Runner in scoring position Nobody out Last half of inning number five to third Whips it to first on the run to first and he beats it Everyone’s safe Tough play on a nice backhand stop Had to be perfect with the exchange and throw to get the out but it looked like he had to dig in there a little deeper like he was trying to get a split finger grip or something Close play but that little extra time on the transfer made all the difference Victor Scott the next to hit Grounded out his first time off and a sack bun here Espenol the turn by Mlan at second And that’s all they’ll get Up next for the Cardinals Second baseman Brendan Donovan Brendan Donovan Next up for the Cardinals at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot Anything but the inning inning double play First pitch just misses And another ball Good spot for the hitter Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch That one misses and that’s ball three Well I would expect in this three 0 count you’re taking all the way See if they’ll walk you Lefty out of the stretch Runners at first and third And that’ll load the bases Well interesting He went with the off speed and walked the hitter You got to challenge the guy with the fast Mason win Next up for the Cardinals Golden opportunity right here Yeah that’s fouled off Base is loaded One away Not close with that one And one and one Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them The one two keeps the bat going with a foul ball Got him Larry Bullard rings him up Now batting right now for St Louis Ivon Herrera who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts Basketball for a strike Tough situation right here It’s so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there The one had a breaking ball misses outside Tap foul at the plate Nukear the runner at third Scott on second Donovan at first Two out of the inning Swings and misses Struck him out Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results And right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam Top of the sixth inning and ready to hit now for Cincinnati Will Benson There’s a swing and a drive That’s back Gone That’s one way to quiet the crowd And they add to their lead It’s two nothing One pitch one swing one home run Yeah you can say that’s efficiency right there Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate but he was ready to turn on the inside Fast ball So direct to the pitch Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan Matthew Liberator departs Just never found his groove Wasn’t able to settle in New arm coming on Back in a moment Now pitching Sunny Gray gets the ball now Pretty tight game so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is Here’s Jos Trevinho for two in this one That misses ball one Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning Puts it in the air out towards left center And there’s one down Now batting third base Santiago Espol In now for the Reds Santiago Espol First offering and it just misses Action in the St Louis bullpen John King The southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in Palante a hard throwing right-hander up as well One out Base is empty and a run in And we’re the top half of the sixth That’s outside and the count is 2 and 0 and another ball Three Draws the walk there Definitely lost the handle during that sequence Four pitches for the walk And that last one didn’t even threaten the zone catcher might want to go talk to him Man at first with one gone Jake Freilley the next to hit for the Reds and a foul ball He one and there’s a foul ball Foul ball still 0 and two Cuts and misses It’s a strike out Matt Mlan now at the plate Second base Matt Mlan inside And that’s ball one One and0 Swings here and drives one Well left field way back and you can forget it It’s their second home run of the inning and they throw a pair on the board It’s 4 nothing Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate but he was ready to turn on the inside Fast ball So direct to the pitch Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark Back to the top of the lineup TJ Fredel getting ready to hit and first offering is fouled off Now a check swing but he held up That’s big right there Being able to check your swing Think about the count swing Instead of 02 he’s sitting 1 against a really good arm Swang and a foul back and that’s out of play Swang and a miss Struck him out That ends the frame But two round tripers in this inning The long ball was working It’s now a four nothing ball game Major League Baseball is on the show Back here at Bush Stadium Bottom of the sixth inning and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus That one ripped but fouled You know these cards doing a great job Boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them You have to be impressed with how they’re going about things at the plate They’re drawing one walk per inning right now I drew one walk per month during my career Oh look at the stop to first and they get the out And yeah a lot of the blame for those walks goes to the mouth but I credit these guys for not getting anxious and fed up They’re staying disciplined which is easier said than done sometimes dives but it kicks off his glove Gets it there in time though So a tough play but they do get out number two Great job by the second base right there Quick reaction to dive knock that ball down and big leaguers just don’t panic Not the good ones He gets up makes the play Really good throw over to first base That’s the kind of composure that you want to see from a guy in that position Two down base is empty Now the third baseman Nolan Aronado and first offering is fouled off Let’s go Fouled off left side And that one upstairs Ball one Two down nobody on here in the bottom of the six And that’s outside Two and two And Natto is set down on strikes Red Birds down quietly They’re down four nothing Top of inning number seven Now the number two hitter Gavin L That clips the corner and one and it’s fouled away That one misses One and two to count just missed And that’s awfully close I don’t know how you take that He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now Spoils that one and it remains two and two That’s foul off to the right side Keeps the AB going Goes down looking Absolutely dotted the edge of the zone right there That was a tough battle man So to make a really quality pitch and just catch him looking like that it’s got to feel good out there on the mound That was a fun at bat to watch Ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit for the Reds High in the air out to right Herrera makes the grab for the second out Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it Spencer Steer Now the Reds cleanup hitter Spencer Steer right through there for a strike Swings through the fast ball up in the zone I wouldn’t say the game’s close right now but it’s not out of reach either I mean these guys really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope Liner base hit and that keeps the inning alive Now batting left fielder Will Benson Here we go Gets the outside corner with that one One strike Two outs That one fouled off Foul ball It stays nothing and two Steer the runner at first with two gone Next offering misses Now one and two Sunny Gray checks on the runner No he’s safe Fouls it back with two strikes That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper and that’s ruled a swing It’s a strike out So one left for Cincinnati They lead four nothing Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Brent Sudter hasn’t pitched in the last three days Lars new digs in now The Cardinals in striking distance but have some work to do It starts with the laid off man Need a good at bat out of him right here And Ellen is inside ball one In this situation you expect the batters to be a little more patient possibly take until they get a strike With that you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count He didn’t right there And that is in for a strike One and two Fights it off You’ll see another stays alive Good job to fight that one off and a foul ball He stays alive Come on let’s go And it remains two and two Right back to him on the mound Tosses to first So they get the out after a long battle at the plate All batting catcher Pedro Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike Action in the pen down there getting loose out there Martinez getting loose as well popped in the air Left field diving makes the grab Hitter’s got a broken heart on that one It had base hit written all over it Maybe extra bases Great diving catch for the upset And stepping in for the Cardinals Victor Scott And that’s through there for a strike 0 and one Fun attempt Popped up and saved He busted it down the line for that infield single Maybe a little small ball is exactly what the doctor ordered to rev up this offense And they’ve been pretty quiet all game So maybe this wakes him up a bit and helps them get on the board And now here is Brendan Donovan inside corner That’s a strike It’s 0 and one And that one is inside The Reds leading by four here in the bottom of the seventh So a foul ball makes it one and two St Louis Come on St Louis That’s a ball And there’s a ball Great RBI spot here Just got to stay focused on the pitch The runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it fouled off the plate They’ll do it again to the right side He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it So one left for the Cardinals They’re on the short end of a four nothing score Now pitching Welcome back And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth Andre Palante Should be a good first match up for him here He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up Here’s the catcher to hit Jose Trevinho 0 for three in this one line drive to short and caught That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well I know it didn’t produce a hit but he made solid contact And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate And here is Santiago Espol This one popped up Foul ground first base side And a foul ball One down Base is empty Oh and he hit him Hit by pitch First base Now batting right Next for Cincinnati Jake Freilley 0 for three A fly out a ground out and a strike out And first offering is fouled off And a foul ball And the 02 that one missed Fouls it off Still one and two popped up foul territory behind a play Has room and he makes the catch Now batting second base Matt Mlan Now it’s the second baseman Matt Mlan He’s already homered here in this one Palante 26 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019 Upstairs two and 0 Two and0 They say you win Two and one Espol off of first with two away Swings through that one out in front that time That one 95 to finish him off Reds leave one but they lead it four to nothing Now pitching for now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth Nick Martinez Martinez coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year His numbers in those matchups are very good Now up for St Lewis Mason the short stop Mason win And the first pitch misses for ball one The shorts stop takes a ball Two balls No straight That one finds the zone That’s strike one Well that’s really the money spot down and away If you can locate that consistently it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen Fouls one off Two and two Sharp grounder That’s through for a base hit and the leadoff man aboard Up next for the Cardinals right fielder Ivon Herrera Next up for the Cardinals 0 for three with three strikeouts First pitch and he just misses Well the leadoff man gets on You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two it here in the air out towards right center No trouble here Puts it away for the out and there’s one down Here comes Wilson Contrus 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out That’s in for a strike Activity in the bullpen Ian Jibo up and throwing for Terry Francona Swang and a miss as he was out front that time flares it into the outfield Takes it in for the out Now batting first baseman Alec Burles Now Alec Burlson Fast ball in for a strike One and one Now if he’s going to steal second you want him to go early in the count That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch Come on Come on Next offering is in for a strike Well this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunity It’s frustrating when you get the leadoff man on but you can’t get him into scoring position They’re going to need a big knock Try to put something up on the board Next pitch misses way outside Swing and a ground ball And that one gets through into center field They stop the lead runner at second Now two on with two outs Third baseman Nolan Aronado Here’s Nolan Aronado St Louis This one chopped on the ground but foul And that’s in for a strike First and second two down here The bottom half of the eighth inning Next offering is down low Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another Two on two outs Oh two two Still two and two after the foul ball First and second two down outside with a breaking ball Lars Newbar waiting in the on deck circle They can get him up he’d represent the tying run So critical pitch right here And they’re all loaded up Just missed his spot on the inside right there Now batting Two outs Base is full Nuke will hit next First pitch just misses He’s getting squeezed a little bit here late And another ball Pressures on right here Two count Base is loaded You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on He’s got to challenge the hitter right here The tying run at the plate This is again five in a row in situations like these the air can get really thin up there at the plate Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down That’s in there And the count is three and one Ground ball to the right side and it goes just foul Swinging a foul ball at the plate They’ll do it again Win on third Burlson over at second Aronado on first with two down Foul We’ll see another payoff pitch right here Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again Tying run at the plate Ball four He’s walked in a run Jay got himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall This innings definitely getting away from him Now the Reds manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen Nick Martinez is done and he leaves with the bases loaded So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him So the closer summoned from the bullpen Emilio Pagan definitely a huge at bat in this game coming up right here But with two outs he’s just got to focus on getting one batter And this should be fun His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one And up next for St Louis Pedro Kah And remember he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up Late swing fouled off on the ground right side Oh can’t pick it up cleanly In comes the run from third and it’s 4-2 I think he got a little casual on that play and took it for granted a little bit So maybe just as much of a mental mistake as a physical one And with two outs that’s a tough one to swallow for the entire defense Now we’ve got a substitution at third base Pinch running here Jordan Walker So two down Victor Scott Next up for the Cardinals Yeah don’t need much damage here Just a base hit Likely will score two Rolled softly but that goes foul in the air fairly deep to right field Drops into the glove That is the inning Two runs in the inning but they strand three through eight full It’s the Reds four and the Cardinals two Now pitching We’re back It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound John King This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters So digging in TJ Fredle Center fielder TJ Fredle and first offering is fouled off King he’s someone that fills up the strike zone so he doesn’t give up a lot of walks but because he’s in the zone so much a decent amount of hits occur Strike two And he’s got to get ahead early in the count and then be able to mix up his speeds add and subtract some velocity but command is the big key Throwing the ball where he wants to Swinging a miss That one in the dirt Throw sails over his head at first Makes the turn and heads for second And he’ll make it up to second as he advances on the throwing error Now batting designated hitter Gavin Lux Runner in scoring position No outs Next is the designated hitter Gavin Lux He swings and fouls one off Runner at second Nobody out That one down the line Walker over to first in time Now one gone in the ninth Now batting shorts stop Ellie de la Cruz and ready to hit now for Cincinnati Ellie Dea Cruz You talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list Foul ball and you played behind guys and they love having your speed out there defensively One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him Man at second swing and a miss There’s that change up The one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way And this is what this guy does He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way So credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch Clearly he had him fooled on the ground out to short dives and he can’t hang on No throw and the defense comes away with nothing Now batting left fielder Will Benson So two outs with runners on the corners Will Benson the next to hit He’s already homerred in this game Inside Just missed That catches the corner Here’s a 1-1 slashed foul down the right side That’ll hook off into the seats Runners on first and third Two away here in the top of the ninth Swing and this one’s bounced on the ground He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it So a hit and an error in the inning but they aren’t able to score To the bottom of the ninth we go Top of the order Do up It’s the Reds four and the Cardinals two Bottom of the ninth Here’s the second base Brendan Donovan Brendan Donovan Pagan back to work That one finds the zone That’s strike one That’s inside in the air to left down the line Benson makes the catch and there’s one gone Now batting shortstop Mason He’s two outs away and the batter will be the shorts stop Mason win Just missed one ball No strike Next offering is fouled back Base is empty one away We’re in the last half of the ninth inning The one one is cut on and missed at a pitch upstairs Just misses the mark outside the zone had a good eye there He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here I love it And there’s a base hit to left So they get a man aboard with a one out single Man those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever Such a good feeling There was nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield That was ripped Got out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked but definitely put a good swing on it And now let’s see if they throw some action with good wheels on the bases Foul off down the right side with the tying run at the plate there The home team trying to pull it out Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field He’s got it Two down Now batting the designated hitter Wilson Contrus So it’s their last chance in this one Wilson Contrus Next up for the Cardinals And that’s outside Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit Slightly up slightly in right through there for a strike Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth Good eye in that spot That turns out to be a really good take right there but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder This could end it Hit to right and that should do it And that’ll do it He closes out his 50th career save So that one has a little extra meaning to it You don’t collect this many saves by accident Another job well done And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show I’m John Shami We’ll see you soon What the roof
