  1. Im excited cause I’ve always wanted toews to be a jet, but im worried about how he’ll do after two years without playing.

I dont like that all he has to do to get paid is be in the lineup. Will they have the heart to box him if he isn’t cutting it, or will they give him a long leash that hurts us at the deadline.

I hope he’s still got it. Im probably still buying a jersey, lol

Edit: Will performance bonuses count against the cap this year? I realize I dont know much about how that works cause he’s got bonuses that come after the deadline 🤔

  2. I liked the idea of Toews as an experiment but 2mil minimum rather than a PTO or league minimum with excessive bonuses seems like too much. Not thrilled about it but if he actually works out then I guess we’ll forget about it.

  3. Cap hit is 2M, but players over 35 on a 1 year contract with performance bonuses are subject to a 7.5% cap cushion if the team is over the cap after all the bonuses are paid out.

With a 95.5M cap, that 7.5% works out to a 7.16M cusion, so the Jets aren’t penalized next season if Toews hits all of his targets.

  4. I really like this contract. Sure, it’s likely a 4-5m contract at minimum, if he’s healthy.

And the rest is entirely based on success in the playoffs AND Toews contribution to that.

  5. Larry Simmons is a cap genius… believe me; the Jets management have ever possible scenario worked through…. Backwards and Forwards!

  6. 3C, move Lowry up to 2C?

Hopefully his personality gels in the finally, not-obviously toxic, locker room.

  7. Seems fairly low risk, high reward. If he isn’t up to snuff we can just have him ride the box and not be on the hook for the bonus amounts. Idgaf what we pay him if he’s a cornerstone player leading us to a stanley cup.

  8. We’re gonna pay 5M to have a 37 year old score 20 points while Chibrikov will be sitting in the press box. Sigh.

  9. Low risk high reward. If he is producing to the point he hits those numbers he will be absolutely worth it. If he isnt then he makes 2.5 which is perfect. The presence he brings to the room will be huge in itself and a shot in the arm for the boys.

  10. The more I think about it the more I like it- the Jets can realistically only win the cup if he turns out to be a 2C. There’s no options in free agency they can afford that’ll be a clear upgrade over Vladdy, and they’ve never been able to grab one at the deadline. So either they win and he gets $7m which is what 2Cs make on winning teams, or he’s bad and they’re out $2-5m in cap space, but it doesn’t really matter. The only bad scenario is if he’s bad enough to be a 4c but not bad enough to bench him and he ends up taking up $4.5 in cap space in a limited depth role.

  11. Wish some of these incentives would have been on production and not just GP

  12. My goodness that’s a lot in bonuses for just showing up, nothing is production / points based. If he’s great and we go deep then fantastic, if he’s awful and doesn’t play then who cares.

But if he’s just okay and slugs out 9 minutes a night on the forth line every game while contributing minimally, that could be ugly for next years cap

  13. Why so much for a 37 year old who hasn’t played hockey since 2022-2023!? I was expecting league min with a couple bonuses perhaps. I really hope it works out, but the most likely outcome is he can’t hang in the NHL.

  14. Welcome to the Peg, Captain Serious! Would be hilarious if Showtime decided to reunite with his old captain.

  15. Holy shit. If hes back in playing fitness this is going to be a very fun season

  16. Not what I expected the contract to look like, not as low risk as I thought it should be

  17. Definitely steep, especially if he’s not putting up 2C numbers, but still getting GP… long-term, he might help Perfetti become the 2C the team needs.

  18. Sorry but I just can’t see him being an effective player at this point in his career
