Jonathan Toews’ incentive-laden Jets contract shows Winnipeg has concerns

It’s a smart contract for a player of his age and especially after taking a hiatus.
Wait why did he sign there? Doesn’t he know he’d make way more money in a US state with low taxes??
We can be pretty real about what this is: A GM giving someone he’s close with an opportunity to come home and prove he can still play. I think it’s definitely a gamble for an organization that clearly believes its in a Cup window, but it’s not like he’s coming in to be a top 6 forward/80 point player. The bar is so low here. I hope Toews clears it easily.
Would have to make the team first
They should use this type of contract for goalies. Low pay with bonus incentives.
Wouldn’t you?
He has buildings and lakes named after him in Manitoba. This is almost as much about selling tickets and merch as it is about hoping he can be a productive player.
Points incentives would have made more sense, he might be ass
Uh, yeah?
He’s 37, hasn’t played in 2 years, and was dealing with MCAS/long covid. A one year deal with playing incentives is just smart – and Toews wouldn’t have signed it if he didn’t think he’d earn a whole lot of those bonuses.
I’m quite interested in seeing what he can do – even if he’s just 3C until Lowry comes back.
Nice to see him back, good shit
I hope it works for both parties. Winnipeg has been close. I’ll be pulling for them!
Reports are that he’s in the best shape he’s been in the last six or seven years.
Don’t forget that having two years off – for a guy that was a perennial deep playoff run type player – can cause huge rejuvenation.
I think it’s an awesome move by the Jets.
Especially with Adam Lowry out until December with hip surgery.
I think it’s generous as hell. He’s unretiring and was already declining. What exactly can you really expect here?
