can move through a ball game and you look up they’re in line for a quality start we’ll see what he’s gotten this one highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side one two that’s off the inside corner and it’s two and two cuts and misses hits a strike out really nice execution of the cut fast ball right there similar to how you might throw a two strike slider starting middle away let it break and take over that outside corner of the plate but sometimes with a cutter you just don’t know how much it’ll move i think he’s good i think he was also a little lucky right there now here’s Bobby Wit Jr the shorts stop takes a ball you know Boo this is a player with some serious speed in 2023 he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game and the one swings through that one- one check swing and he went and the count one and two one ball two strikes one out base is empty fights that one away still one and two battling here as he fouls it away one down base is empty fights it off he’ll see another Sway in a line drive that’s a base hit into center field so they get a man aboard with a one out single just so sound in his mechanics it’s against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field and now Mikel Garcia that one’s in there that’s strike one whit over at first other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had a full Vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals really strong hitting performance recently hitting better than 350 this month no balls one strike next pitch is outside oh he’s really working him away this at bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield they stop the lead runner at second now two on with two outs the catcher number 13 Salvador and now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck and that gets down into the gap one run across rounds third headed for the plate he’ll score two runs are in it’s two nothing well he had the opportunity to drive in some runs and he comes through to break the tie first pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals even up and down on strikes he goes and he’s registered three Ks in this one but they’ll pick up a couple runs here both coming on this two-run double it’s now a two nothing ball game it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show back here at Petco Park and our pitcher in this game Seth Lugo and this will be a tough test for him pitching on the road has not been that kind to his numbers well I think he’s just got to trick himself mentally and put himself in a comfort level like he does at home i know it’s not the same being on the road as away from home in terms of being able to have a routine and be consistent with it but this game is so much mental and he’s going to have to find a way to play a mind game with himself to move through this ball game and get a W fernando Tatis Jr leading things off and takes a strike rank two he doesn’t seem to like to pitch up hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches 02 count now i think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there that’s a ball one two and that liner is just barely fair for a hit makes the turn and heads for second to second pulls him off the bag good two- strike hitting right there Boo a bit of a lost start for some so that was nicely done to beat the odds a welldeserved double on a great swing got everything going on time he stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask runner in scoring position no outs now the number two hitter Luis Az pitch misses one and0 runner at second nobody out and there’s a foul ball [Music] out towards right center that’s well struck dives for it got it makes the play runner tags and goes to third you love to see when a guy’s hungry to make a play right there an excellent diving catch you can absolutely tell he was all in in tracking that ball down here’s Manny Machado now what a season it’s been for him he has supplied a lot of power and that average that one to first kaggle Leon throws to first in time there for the out runner scores from third so important to really lock in on an at bat like this it seems easy with the infield back but you got to make sure you put the ball in play put it on the ground brought that runner in here’s Gavin Sheets now left hand bat [Applause] ball one no strikes that one missing inside two and0 that misses the zone and that’s fall three fast for a strike [Music] oh can’t pick it up cleanly still manages a throw he beats the throw and they can’t get the out we all know that that first inning can be a critical one in terms of guys settling in and the tone being set for the game so this isn’t what you’re looking for on defense two out errors are a lot like two out walks but maybe even worse because your pitcher did his job to get what should have been the last out of that inning count right there he got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point pretty impressive for an 02 count one out runner at second kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals and that misses ball one one ball no strikes man at second misses outside and it’s two and 0 swing and a ball ripped right field that one back and that one is gone and they boost their lead it’s 4-1 he’s bringing the thunder in a rainstorm how in the world did he manage to hit that pitch out in a two- count a hitter is on high alert this is what you live for to be in the driver’s seat here he got a pitch that he could handle and he hit that pitch really hard nice home run so the Royals batting order turns over jonathan Indie at the plate popped up left side to Glacius and there are two down [Applause] now batting offense aside for just a second Chris it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most well he gets to balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base and there’s the third out that’ll do it for the inning two-run shot for the Royals this inning it’s now 4-1 major League Baseball is on the show bottom half of a number two now it’s the second base jake Cronin work cronin work that’s inside ball not even close there and that’s ball two [Applause] he swings and fouls one off i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up [Music] and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again knocks that one away and we’ll do it again turns and misses it’s a strike out couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees batting seven jose Glaciius glacius that misses and that’s over so no runs no hits no errors and no one left we play two full it’s the Royals four and the Padres’s one and we’re back new inning getting started so up now for Kansas City Mike Garcia well he’s back out here for the third and after the first couple of innings pretty rough i think the skipper is looking for him to give him a little bit of length see if he can save the bullpen some just missed i think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game he’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start nope ball out to short zips it across lead off man retired here in the third the back numberated hit and here is Vinnie Pasquantino one for one with a single and a run scored so far lifted in the air right center field lockage under it brings it in and there’s two away the catcher number 13 two outs space is empty and next up for the Royals Salvador Perez doubled his first time and a curve is down and in [Music] and a foul ball [Music] two down like that and they’re back in business [Applause] it’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there and that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run the slight opposite field into the gap man making it look easy that’s for sure so the lineup flips over fernando Tatiz Jr to hit here and that clips the inside corner folks you just got to delete it you give up that leadoff home run go back to work focus on this next batter fernando Tatis Jr signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016 and it finds its way through for a hit wasting no time he’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle seriously we’re starting with this already luis Arise stands in and remember he was absolutely between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals the LA Dodgers nldds game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2020 smoked on the ground to second india over to first in time machado out of the play well you’re definitely looking to do more with that opportunity at the plate two runners in scoring position but at least he puts the ball in play they bring across one still one out there to pick up gavin Sheets will hit next he’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed and delivers outside arise stands at third with one gone in the inning off the mark there and now two and0 in this situation he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you that’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here inside and it’s three and0 feel like he’s frustrated a little bit he wants to be challenged sam and Bogarts in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here tying run and scoring position here in the last half of the third and there’s the automatic out to short with fires across the diamond but the game is tied as the run comes in here’s Xander Bogart out his first time xander Bogar that one finds the zone that’s strike one swing and a miss struck him out that K is his third of the game three runs on three hits one a solo shot on to inning number four and we are tied 4-4 and welcome back to the ballpark john Shami with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth Jack Kaggle Leone padres first pitch swinging well these Royals doing a great job Boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them pitch count is pretty high and they’ve played it four runs already so I think it’s safe to say their game plan is working out pretty well right now the left fielder number eight Drew Waters go ahead run on base drew Waters steps in for the Royals he’s 0 for one slice the other way and foul so they forced the starter to put in a lot of work and they’ve been able to get to him for some runs and hopefully that bullpin phone is working today this one lifted in the air left field and there’s one away now batting right fielder John Lee and now John Ray doubled in his first AB in the dirt gets away from Aldonado and now a man into scoring position well that’s part of the risk when you throw a breaking ball in the dirt even as good as catchers are these days at blocking pitches that one just got away enough and that takes the double play opportunity away for now foul ball there instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in fouled off he was late tied at four that one outside two and two that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going the pitch still two and two after the foul ball one out and a runner at second top half of inning number four and a curve is down and in tapped on the ground softly to short that was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base the center fielder number 28 Kyle Isel so the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now it’s Kyle Isbel he’s already homerred in this game late swing fouled to the left one and one this one in the dirt doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego nick Pavetta appears to be getting loose kohic warming up as well that catches the outside corner that is strike two back door him with a breaking ball just got the corner there’s nothing you can really do with that swing and a miss struck him out a lot of adrenaline we can see it right there and sometimes you just got to let it out that’s an outstanding job of taking that executing and getting out of a tough inning bottom of the fourth here’s Jake Cron the second baseman jake Cron check swing and he went 0 and one you know these Padres’s doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side and here’s a stat for you Boo they’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at it’s pretty special stuff not so good if you’re out there on the mound that one missed [Applause] and a strike on the outside edge well he hasn’t quite settled in out there four runs in three innings he’s going to have to have some quick one two three innings to pitch deep into this ball game and that one popped to short with makes the catch for the out that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate second base Jonathan India taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level that one finds the zone strike one yeah that’s a little bit high that’s a ball to what next off is in for a strike gets a piece and stays alive tied at four foul ball another 2-2 upcoming that one hit to right tatis after it makes the catch and there’s one down now batting short stop here’s the shortstop at the play bobby Wit Jr one for two sing you talk about a guy that has all the skills the range is really good but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays outside low and that’s ball one and because of that big power arm he’s able to play a little bit deeper make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner that’s impressive over to first awesome play there now that third base Garcia digging in Mikel Garcia for two in this one garcia 25 years old and he was born in Venezuela and first offering is fouled off two down nobody on the top of the fifth and that’s outside on the ground out to Short on the run sends it over to first and that’s a nice play to end the inning royals bats are quiet there score remains tied at four and we’re back ready to go for the last half of the leading off Martine Maldonado maldonado that misses the zone one and0 uh-uh ball two and0 and another ball [Applause] it’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahehead run he did not take the bat off his shoulder as well good eye right there and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now that’s a ball tried the sweeper next one diving stop to keep the ball on the infield then he’s able to get up and get and out he also keeps that runner from advancing any further if that ball gets through the complexion of this inning could strikeouts now sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam we’re back and they make a change to start the sixth the new pitcher Nick Pava well he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season averaging more than one per inning vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals vinnie Pasquantino oh he doesn’t get the call and that is ball one activity in the bullpen for San Diego adrien Morone the left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose peralta also throwing tied at four and another ball that one misses ball three that one misses so lead off walk now batting go ahead run on base and now Salvador Perez there’s the strike knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here you’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there swinging at that pitch that’s a no no swing and a miss and a count is 0 and two a little anxious a little damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was fly ball down the line waters sizes this one up drops into the glove and there’s two down jose Glaciius gets a chance now short stop Jose there’s the strike well a good first pitch change up there in order to be effective you’ve got to really sell it good arm speed and it’s got to be down in the zone look out and it hit him he had two strikes on him and he hit him here’s the center fielder Brandon Lockage [Applause] and there’s the ball the one swing and a pop off in foul ground he’s under it and the inning is over two left on seventh inning coming up and we are tied 44 now welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound adrien Morome bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit classic bullpen move right here so we’ll see how it works out and to the plate for Kansas City John Ray a little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here but the lefty lefty matchup high chopper to he’s faced in this one getting straight to work man it’s talked about a lot but relievers are just so electric these days he’s having fun at bats if you’re a hitter and I’m so glad I’m retired now rest and now the catcher comes up to him martine Maldonado the catcher martine Maldonado there’s the strike 95 of that one well that’s really the money spot down and away if you can locate that consistently it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up that’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen that one fouled off pitch in the dirt and it’s one and two hson misses it’s a strike out well that’s the money maker right there two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter i mean this is tough you’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off so with one down it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr fast ball for a strike 01 now ball base is empty one away here the bottom of the seventh swing and a miss in that strike two that front door slider is such a devastating pitch you don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball so you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there it’s out of the swing plane on the ground to the left throws to first and that quickly two away the first baseman number four Luis Aras now here is Luis Arazz first pitch misses ground ball right side the flip to the lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play fought off foul pitch misses inside one and two count one and two with a go ahead run at third and we’re in the top of the eighth missed with a change up now two and two and that’s outside full count tied at four and ball four to a board well a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now just couldn’t find the strike zone substitution now at first base on the pinch run number two Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals well with pretty good speed over there at first base I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down hold the ball a little bit step off just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base dealer a runner at third with less than two outs this is the guy that usually comes through in these spots there it was a high velocity fast ball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust him that’s too low and one and one working down in the zone to start the at looking for that double playground ball yeah back to back sinkers there he’s looking for some weak contact or to get That’s hard hit on the line snags it on the run runner tanks from third he scores that’s a big sacrifice fly they lead it in the eighth wow he looked like he was running before the ball was hit didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time jack Kaggle Leone now at the plate and the slider just bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone swaging a ball hit out towards left center field they got it for out number two the center field yeah the batter now Kyle Isel and he’s already left his mark on this game he certainly has Boo a two-run shot in the second inning and that made an early impact on this game in a big way and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike action in the pen down there shawn Reynolds the rookie right-hander is getting loose kick warming up as well [Music] and a foul ball [Music] two down ball one there one-run game here in the top of the ninth swings through that one it’s the strikeout so they go quietly there 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth it’s the Royals five Padres’s four back now and on the mound a closer Carlos Est this is an extremely confident pitcher he loves the pressure actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable three-run save opportunity because that’s when he pitches his best one run game stepping in for San Diego jake Croninworth and the first offering a fast ball for a strike inside corner at the knees for a strike getting a little frustrated with the strike zone outside low ball one one-run game bottom nine fights that one away still one and two the healthy cut tough pitch at 98 but a really good pass at the ball foul ball left side he’ll see another well he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone i’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again 99 mph to finish him off well that right there is what you want to see out of your closer come in and close the door cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game tell you what that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs late swing fouled off [Applause] lifted in the air out to left makes the grab and there’s two out the center fielder number 28 last chance for the Padres’s brandon Lockage the next up for the Padres’s pitch misses inside and it’s one and0 running that good fast ball up on the hitters inside if nothing else it keeps him from diving out over the plate to get those arms extended on the pitch away and that’s downed away [Applause] two outs on the ground to third and it’s just fouled that was close they’re down to their final strike i’d say that stayed in the tunnel for a long time no chance of even fouling it off estz is just one strike away hit on the ground to short throw to first that’ll do it and the Royals hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game well this was a tightly played game got a little of everything some timely hitting runs on the board key pitching and defense in certain spots definitely a fun one to watch
