and welcome in everybody glad you’re with us we bring you Friday baseball on the show it’s the Cleveland Guardians going up against the Athletics first pitch coming your way next all right just about ready for baseball and on the mound in this one JP Sears but Chris he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound well I’ll say this every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans in front of the city and you know this guy no different he wants to be more effective here so you look at the numbers they haven’t been great at home i’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one oh that got him first batter of the game is hit by the pitch leading off for the second Thomas Lane Thomas get two and downstairs Thomas getting the start at second 29 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season inside yeah that’s ball two quan gets his lead at first with nobody out good approach right there you want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate stay out of that double play turned on but that’s fouled down the third baseline [Music] the other way steps on the bag for one throw to second not in time he’s there easily here’s the Guardians lineup now one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now Carlos Santana and he’s leading him in runs batted in this season which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure and he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage you know a lot of guys they see runners on base and they get big they feel like all this pressure I’ve got to get these runs in but somehow he seems to settle into these situations so watch out when he comes to the plate jose Ramirez stands in now and watches strike one that one finds the zone and it’s 0 and two oh this guy is so comfortable hitting with two strikes even a good pitch early in the at bat if he’s not ready to pull the trigger he’s not worried if he And look out that one gets him the second man he’s pumped in this one third base stepping up for the Guardians david Fry that one outside and that’s ball one no strike [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone runners at first and second with one gone and that one is inside could be some action here on this next pitch couple runners on probably a challenge pitch coming and he swings through that one i would grab another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up spoils that one and it remains two and two [Applause] two on one out [Applause] okay Carlos Santana in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here [Applause] and that’ll load the bases well the stage has been set for this offense booth it’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here and now it’s the switch hitter Carlos Santana tapped at the plate but it’s a foul ball you won and a big swing and a miss [Applause] had a good eye there see if he can go upstairs a little bit make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt swanging a ball lined out towards center squeezes it runner tags for home and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead good piece of hitting right there he’s thinking off the bat that’s getting down for extra bases but nice job of the outfielder running it down making the catch still comes away with the sack fly though rbi gabrielle Arias digs in for the Guardians and Cleveland on top one zip yeah the first offering is not close this might be the most pressure you put on this guy today you got one run in you got to try to get another one or maybe two [Applause] cleveland up around looking for more one ball one strike [Applause] missed with a change up and it’s two and one it’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on let’s see if they can cash in upstairs jonathan Rodriguez next to bat for Cleveland two on two outs in the air left side soderstrom on his way over brings it in and that’ll do it two men left stranded but they do push across one onto the bottom of the first it’s the Guardians one and the Athletics coming to bat back here with my pal Singi and on the hill the big righty Slade Sakone what should we keep an eye on here well you can see his whip is a little above the league average not bad but I think in this one he’s going to need to control that a little bit better try to limit hitters from getting on base stay in that windup instead of the stretch and when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch he’s going to get a swing and miss get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball [Applause] [Music] the 1-1 is fouled off got him looking for the K called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone no that’s not the best two strike fast ball I’ve seen but certainly got away with the location there you know sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the hard of the plate not expecting it and it just kind of freezes you nope outside one out base is empty [Music] the shorts stop takes the ball inside just missed that one is absolutely belted can’t get to it as it drops into the corner the throw into second and he’s got it doubled but when you fall behind in the count you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there one out runner at second next up for the A’s Tyler Soderstrom not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently under the Mendoza line so far this month all right let’s go just missed ground ball left side fires to first in time are you kidding me all right let’s take a look at the lineup and I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in a lineup against a right-hander yeah you’re not the only one Boo i’m a bit surprised as well and you know some hitters work well against same-handed pitching you know just back in 2024 Bobby Wit Jr Vlad Guerrero Jr and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties so maybe they got a plan after all swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play fouled off he was late [Music] the pitch cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam and welcome back to the ballpark and now Jonathan Rodriguez rodriguez sears back to work in the air left field down the line diving gets down could be extra bases safe at second with a leadoff double first pitch swing in went up there with a plan to be aggressive just a blue pit behind third right there and that’s a really tough play for a third base or shortstop to get to and the same for the left fielder so he just found a perfect place to drop that one in right there anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians right through there for a strike one strike [Music] baby let’s go man at second founding ball here rolls foul battling here as he fouls it away that misses and it’s one and two one ball two strike and there’s the ball really good take especially with two strikes lifted in the air left field pretty well struck soderstrom sizes this one up puts it away for the out betty ninth catcher Austin Hedges austin Hedges stands in and Chris his big strength is defense but it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played a good defensive catcher is considered differently whatever you get offensively is a bonus but he’s got to put the fingers down he’s got to present pitches to the umpire they’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes check swing no appeal i think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page and that’s something that this guy does really well gets in sync with his pitchers boo his preparation is off the charts i was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit he’s so buried in that video room it’s hard to get a chance to talk to him there’s a line drive to left field sods it in and there’s two away now batting left fielder Steven Quan so the lineup flips over steven Quan digs in for the Guardians sing he’s got a history of coming through in the big spots i know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots rodriguez at second with two down well I think it’s the ability to assess the situation understanding what the pitcher has what he’s trying to get people out on and then being able to use the entire field if you’re a guy that can only hit to one field then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust but because he’s able to use the entire field that slings it across third out no runs one hit a double no errors and one man left we go to the bottom of inning number two it’s the Guardians one and the A’s nothing bottom half of inning number two now it’s a rookie first base Nick Curts number 16 let’s go Nick that one ripped but fouled and he’ll one swinging a foul back that’s out of play that misses the zone now one and two that’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count and a swing and a miss that K is his third out of the game he had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one next up for the A’s Maxy first offering misses badly for ball one that one drilled left field the one hops off the wall should be extra bases safely into second he’s got a double well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win austin wins will hit next put that 600 slugging into context the league average usually in the low 400s line drive makes a nice running catch two down they trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run and you saw it right there that’s a player you want patrolling center field someone who can attack the ball off the bat here’s Luis Oas it’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed and that’s him for a strike it’s 0 and one looks like he’s just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a pitch that he turns on now bullet to second base but he’s got it to end the inning the A’s strand one they’re down one- nothing top half of the third inning so in now for Cleveland Thomas right through there for a strike kilobo one strike he doesn’t seem to like to pitch up hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches 02 count now i think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there oh that got him as well the third batter he’s hit with a pitch here’s Jose Ramirez designated he’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport how difficult is that to do well just look at the back of my bubble gum card you’ll see how hard it is these guys are great man they have the ability to look out there but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch those that can really sharpen things on the outer half those are the ones that become elite throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out out there looking to be aggressive and got something he can handle that can be a dangerous pitch if you don’t get it inside enough because as a hitter you see it coming across the plate the whole way no problem handling it and putting a good swing on it that time first and second no outs so next will be the fourhole hitter for the Guardians David Fry and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91 you know these Guardians doing a great job Boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him he’s only given up one run but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense and that’s in there at the knees for a strike you know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today pitch misses there it’s a ball in two strikes and two now one missed first and second no outs we’re here in the top half of inning number three still two and two after the foul ball looked like you got a little excited on that fast ball got to think to yourself you want to stay up the middle that way if you’re a little bit early you hit it out of the ballpark if you’re a little late opposite field knocking as the fast runs back over the inside corner oh just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there i think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle so I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands carlos Santana digs in now picked up an RBI in his last at bat still their only run of the game so far yeah the pitch is in for a strike go and one [Applause] that’s a little bit low could use a ground ball here something in the infield runner at first base get two get out of this and a count one and two [Applause] on the ground to third off balance feed there’s one and that’s two poetry in motion there as the second baseman turns the double play nice throw to first and that’s the way to end the inning bottom of the inning and now the center fielder Denzel centerielder denzel you know this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind if he can get on it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about and that’s ball one next offering is fouled back [Music] next offering pop foul off to the right out of play tap to first santana tosses to the pitcher covering the bag leadoff hitter gone in the third now batting designated hitter Lawrence Butler back to the top of the lineup now the A’s designated hitter Lawrence Butler caught looking his first time up and that one fouled off and it’s quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter swing and a high-fly ball right field rodriguez and makes the grab and there’s two away now batting short stopac next up for the A’s Jacob Wilson doubled his first time now a screamer into the outfield martinez hauls it in to end the inning three up three down for him there on to inning number four it’s the Guardians one and the A’s nothing and we’re back john Shami with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth Gabrielle Aras come on let’s go to Gold baby let’s go let’s go just missed arius 25 years old and he was born in Venezuela and there’s a ball and another ball all right let’s go next offering is in for a strike late swing fouled off that one misses so a leadoff walk what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that one jonathan Rodriguez jonathan Rodriguez digs in for the Guardians doubled in his first AB and that one upstairs ball one [Music] to go next one misses and the count now two nothing looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up doesn’t want to make another mistake hit on the ground up the middle that’s a base hit throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out wasting no time two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle seriously we’re starting with this already digging in is the switch inning outfielder Anel Martinez fly to left his first time not even close there ball one [Applause] right through there for a strike [Applause] that clips the zone and it’s one and two to first might be two one at second back to first double play 363 nicely done for me that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield the first baseman has to get inside create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first really good job all the way around austin Hedges now first pitch not close arius on third with two out just off the outside edge love how this guy grinds out at bats i mean he’s down there at the bottom of the lineup in the nine hole but he’s worked himself into a really good hitter’s count try to pick up a two-out RBI next offering misses three and 0 well I would expect in this three 0 count you’re taking all the way see if he’ll walk you [Music] and he pumps in a strike two outs and a runner at third top half of inning number four instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in fouls that off to the left and will do it again and a swing and a miss so Hedges is gone so one hit is all they get for Midway in the fourth it’s the Guardians one and the A’s nothing and welcome back to the ballpark and the batter now Tyler Soderstrom tyler Soderstrom and the first offering a fast ball for a strike just missed [Applause] [Applause] that one inside and that’s ball three expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball something in the zone because he does not want to allow the laidoff walk and that’s in there at the knees careful that’s a good at bat right there he was down early in that plate appearance works the walk that could jump start an offense that’s really struggle to score in this one don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass the batter now Brent Rooker struck out swinging his first time cut on and miss good change up right there and it’s 0 and one runner on the move in the air right field and out number one on the grab and now the first baseman Nick Curt 0 for one he struck out swinging last time [Applause] and that one fouled off well he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there not sure exactly with the timing sometimes you get a backup breaking ball you’re expecting it to make its move at the this one’s into the gap in left center and that should be extra bases run around third he’ll score easily well he gets it done in a big spot to get the run across just a great approach looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch and right off the bat he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second so the go-ahead run in scoring position muny getting ready to hit doubled his first time up swung on melted [Applause] high bounce takes it over the fence that’s an automatic double as a run scores on the play he puts a great swing on that pitch and drives home the run and that was always going to be a double but the bounce over the wall just took the guesswork out of it right away it was a nice swing one out runner at second austin wins the next to hit and that’s through there for a strike it’s 0 and one a’s leading by a run [Applause] out in front and fouled to the left side man at second fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 [Applause] slice the other way that’s a base hit moxy headed home he’ll score good two strike hitting right there G a bit of a lost start for S so that was nicely done to beat the odds really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws one down luis Urias now at the plate he’s 0 for one [Applause] drilled out towards left center field martinez sizing this one up drops into the glove and there are two outs now batting the center fielder Denzel Clark next up for the A’s Denzel Clark singing you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively i mean watching him track balls in the outfield it is beautiful first pitch doesn’t find the zone so how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it it’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground he enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart swing and a ball popped in the air and it falls and now first and second with two outs now batting designated hitter Lawrence Butler so the batting order turns over lawrence Butler up next for the A’s throw on to Santana that ends the inning and they limit the damage three runs for him here and they move ahead we’re headed to the fifth it’s the A’s three and the Guardians won all set for the start of the inning here’s the Cleveland leadoff hitter Steven Quan sears back to work activity in the bullpen jt Gin the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening lopez getting cranked up as well out into left center for a line drive base hit so a man on base to start the inning now batting second base nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line and you know hitters they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly there’s Lane Thomas now that’s a little high and that is ball one let’s go baby let’s go and that’s through there for a strike well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count next offering is outside two and one swinging a highfly ball out towards right field rooker calls it in and there’s one away now it’s Jose Ramirez baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out quan the runner at first with one gone in the inning swing and a fly ball well struck left field sodestro makes the catch out number two up next for Cleveland third baseman David Fry david Fry digs in for the Guardians he is struck out and he is walked right through there for a strike well this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunity it’s frustrating when you get the leadoff man on but you can’t get him into scoring position they’re going to need a big knock try to put something up on the board next offering is in for a strike perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes now back is against the wall he’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly two outs foul ball still 0 and two gets a piece there we’ll do it again the Guardians trailing by two and we’re in the top of the fifth swing and a highf fly ball deep left field going back on this one and it’s off the wall coming home he’ll score easily comes through with the RBI put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases chance now to even this game if they can put a ball in play maybe an error maybe a hit so runner at second two down now a chance for Carlos Santana this one in the dirt but no advance that’s ball one [Applause] man on second two down close but called the ball and it’s two and 0 two ball one straight bottom of the zone in a cold strike getting a little frustrated with the strike zone swing and a ball driven out to center clark on a dead sprint racing back out of the track and he makes the catch but a run will score in the inning on this RBI double as the A’s are on top you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show we head to the bottom of the fifth now it’s the short stop Jacob Wilson the MO for him is contact a guy who’s going to deliver average not a ton of power he’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere you all that’s why it’s a team i mean when you look at a lineup he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate close but called a ball ball two well I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed i mean it could have gone either way but he looked a little shocked for a second there here’s a 2 [Applause] just missed fouls one away and now three and two that one misses so a lead off walk pretty good spot on the outside but just couldn’t quite clip the zone that’s a stone cold take here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot slade Sakone won’t go any further and it wasn’t his best start but he kept him in it to this point and we’ll come back with a new arm now pitching they turn things over to the southpaw Kobe Allard well you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story but he’s been really good so far this year next up for the A’s Tyler Sodstrom he’s 0 for one [Applause] out in front with the swing and that is strike one fast ball for a strike 0 and two [Music] good job to fight that one off nobody out runner at first on the ground out to Short and that squirts through lead runner to second so two on and nobody out now Daddy the right fielder Brent Rooker so here’s the cleanup hitter Brent Rooker for two in this one and that one just misses a ball and no strikes [Applause] next offering is fouled back [Music] that missed by a lot two and one fouled off left side first and second no outs last half of inning number five next offering upstairs that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going and they’re all loaded up very close off the outside corner could have easily been called a strike in that location nick Curts digs in now [Applause] that one finds the zone and that’s strike one the opportunity for a huge inning exists right here bases loaded nobody out but as a hitter can’t be over anxious that pitcher is up against the wall make him come to you skips in and excellent work to corral that one could have been dangerous [Applause] and that skips in the dirt you need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something but you got to make some pitches but if he can battle and get through this he can earn some points [Applause] [Applause] tapped softly on the ground on a second they get one and that’s all they get max Muny up next for the A’s third baseman Maxi [Applause] and that one popped in the air left field quan makes the catch runner tagging from third oh he botches it next to hit Austin wins austin wins oh can’t pick it up cleanly still able to fire over misplay doesn’t cost him inning over so it’s two runs on one hit no errors and one man left we’re through five it’s the A’s five and the Guardians two we’re back and they make a change to start the sixth the new pitcher JT Gin well home runs have been a problem this year not doing a great job keeping the ball in the yard so far this season so we’ll see if that factors in and the batter will be the short stop Gabrielle Arias gabrielle Arias jt the shortstop takes a ball the A’s bullpen has some movement tj McFarland the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in nukem warming up as well and the one [Applause] this to third and that’s a fair ball around first heading for two and they hold him at second maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback now batting right fielder Jonathan nice job keeping it fair as he turned on it down the line and once it got through the infield it was a double all the way runner in scoring position no outs and up next for Cleveland Jonathan Rodriguez and there’s the strike one strike runner in scoring position nobody out and we’re the top half of the sixth next pitch a slider that misses outside one ball one strike swing and a miss and that’s strike two wow no fair right there i mean that slide didn’t move till the very last moment incredibly difficult to pick that up just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch not close and it deflects away onto first not in time he legs it out and on the wild pitch he goes down to third well you don’t see it very often but every once in a while a guy strikes out and still somehow ends up safe on first and when it happens you kind of scratch your head but I guess sometimes a pitch is so nasty it makes everyone miss now they’re going to have to get more than three outs in this inning so runners at the corners nobody out anel Martinez will hit next there’s the strike hard grounder into the outfield for a knock runner from third comes across it’s an RBI single it’s 53 well done narrows the deficit with the RBI there i really like that swing man he didn’t just push it the other way through the infield he drove it that way and it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box got a pitch he liked and he got it done first and second no outs and next is the Guardians catcher Austin Hedges and he lays one down the left side muny tosses across to first the runners move up on the sacrifice now batting left fielder Steven Quan manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen jt Gin won’t go any further tonight and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third so looking for some help there back in a minute now pitching new arm out of the bullpen Jacob Lopez number 57 and a tall task ahead of him right here with two runners in scoring position and multiple outs to get he’s going to be pitching for strikeouts here no question and here is Steven Quan this is the classic manufacturing a run situation a runner at third less than two outs and a golden opportunity to bring him home pitch misses ball one this is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended what you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands that’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants second and third here one away and a count one and two [Applause] keeps the attack going with a foul ball [Applause] swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt gets the out two down after the strike out no advance good job behind the dish well they get a big strike out there and that was a nice job behind the plate to complete the out at first while keeping those runners at second and third that could have turned out way worse for the defense lane Thomas will make his way to the plate yeah don’t need much damage here just a base hit likely will score too up and in and that’s ball one [Applause] just missed second and third two down and that one hit to first takes it himself that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand but the RBI single pushes across a run it’s now 53 and we’re back and now Luis second base Luis just missed and another ball two inside just missed next pitch in for a strike three and one [Music] that one misses so a leadoff walk you get a walk and you get a walk everyone gets a walk the center field at first nobody out denzel Clark up next for the A’s one for two one ball in the dirt blocked rudder at first with no outs here and that’s off the inside edge and it’s two and one that one out to right rodriguez on the run towards the line makes the grab on the run and there’s one away that’s just a really nice catch on the run right there he saved extra bases for sure the pitcher’s his friend he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch and now Lawrence Butler 0 for three a fly out a ground out and a strike out fast for a strike swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field that’ll touch down for a hit lead runner touches second headed for third headed for the plate he’ll score picks himself up an RBI fast pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter so no surprise he put a great swing on it [Applause] one out runner at second now it’s going to be Jacob Wilson [Music] [Applause] out got to continue to add runs if you’re going to get out of here with a win they had a foul ball [Applause] on the ground to third and it stays fair grounds third headed for the plate he’ll score easily talk about the right guy at the right spot they really need a rally and this guy is someone you can believe in to find a way to get on base and a ball in two strikes swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher wins makes the play and there’s one down good hard fast ball up in the zone right there they look really good coming in but so hard to get on top of as a hitter stepping in David Fry drove it off the wall last time just missed out on a home run and that is downstairs and it’s one and0 swinging a highfly ball out there towards left field two down just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left and that one lifted in the air center field clark sizes this one up corrals it and that is that [Applause] now pitching Tanner By on the pitch here he last pitched two days ago so now it’s the fourhole hitter Brent Rooker a former first round pick and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player by in his third season he features a four seam fast a cutter a change up a slider and he occasionally uses a curve one way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they’re doing that right here in the air on the infield arius nabs it one down now batting number 16 and here’s the first baseman Nick Curts that misses one and0 meanwhile activity in the bullpen luis Ortiz the young right-hander up and throwing swings through that base is empty one away here in the bottom of the seventh base knock right field let’s go nice line drive to the pull side bed it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield man at first with one gone maxy the next to hit and there’s a foul ball [Music] in the air right side of the infield santana makes the grab two away now now batting catcher Austin wins and now the catcher comes up to him austin wins let’s go baby let’s go and that’s in there for strike one that one missed curts the runner at first with two gone oh and he hit him that hit him first batt now at the plate that’s to third fry they get the force inning over a strand a couple but they lead it by four it’s 73 now welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the Tyler Ferguson well he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big RA so this is an important outing for him to get on the right track here’s the short stop at the plate gabrielle Arias gabrielle Arias and the first pitch misses for ball one [Music] nope ball two just off the inside edge delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 pick at bat right here he did the team thing took until he got a strike now he’s got to go to work shorten up that swing a little bit do whatever it takes to get on base that one misses so a lead off walk second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the plate a game plan that he’s sticking to he’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there and first offering is fouled off [Music] swinging a miss at a slider you’re going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the leadoff man on everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much stays alive the Guardians down by four and really quick feet he’s able to recognize the pitch see the trajectory and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop that one misses and now 3 and 0 really impressive with the way he frames the way that he sets it up because sometimes those pitches are off the plate but because he sets up and presents it so well he steals strikes for his pitcher and fires in a fast ball at 95 pulls that one foul two outs and one in scoring position struck him out looking so it’s no runs on no hits no errors and one left on base home half of inning number eight straight ahead it’s the A7 and the Guardians three bottom of the eighth here’s the center fielder Denzel Clark center fielder Denzel Clark by back to work and that drops in for a strike swing and a ball lifted left field quan grabs it on the run oh those can be pretty fun as an outfielder got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down nothing better than that you feel like a wide receiver playing football butler in the box now no balls in a strike no that’s high he swings and hits a fly ball center field that one gets down for a hit [Applause] up next one gone runner first next up for the A’s Jacob Wilson ball one no strikes boo the runner at first needs to be careful right here he’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound butler stands at first with one out that one clips the outside corner and the count one and one the short stop takes a ball runner here comes the pitch runner breaks for second now a fly ball to right center rodriguez hauls it in for the out two away up next for the A’s left fielder Tyler Soder now the left fielder Tyler Sodro and first offering is fouled off [Music] that clips the corner swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt hedges on to first in time the two-3 strikeout ends the inning the A’s strand one but they still lead it 73 we’re back it’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound number 49 and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters steven Quan digs in for the Guardian builder Steven Quan [Applause] and delivers outside the Athletics have some bullpen action willie Macyver the rookie right-hander is getting loose spence also throwing [Applause] the one and that’s a little bit high let’s go [Applause] [Applause] here we go [Applause] oh that plunked him and that’s now twice he’s been hitting this one here’s Lane Thomas 0 for three in this one thomas [Applause] and first offering is fouled off [Applause] swing and a miss and he was that slurp right there extremely well talk about just a ton of break so tough to get that barrel to [Applause] just off the inside edge [Applause] and they’ll do it again [Applause] squirts away a little bit to second but way too late safe there quan into scoring position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility you know sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in though we’ll see if he can settle down [Applause] and a foul ball he stays alive [Applause] foul ball another two- two upcoming [Applause] you got this knocks that one away and we’ll do it again grinding AB right here about to see pitch number 10 [Applause] that’s the ball squirts away a little bit three balls two strikes [Applause] foul ball and it remains a full cow [Applause] swing and a miss stuck him out he battled for a long time but it finishes with a strike out you can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one jose Ramirez digs in now [Applause] check swing called strike one out and a runner at second [Applause] that’s in there and the count is 0 and two and ball one well as a pitcher when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call it’ll eat at you out there so some handle it a little bit better than others and right here clearly letting the amp hear it a little bit man at second almost got him [Music] [Applause] oh Rebo two strike [Music] [Applause] sets him down on strikes and the Guardians with one out left just locked him up right there for the second out and that’s what Bat is probably going to be thinking about for a little while didn’t pull the trigger not how you want to go down in an RBI spot so now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up [Applause] fry the next to hit takes outside [Applause] gets him to chase after that one one straight [Music] [Applause] so a foul ball makes it one and two the Guardians down to their final strike down to the dirt swing and a miss gets to it on the first and that’ll do it as they complete the strike out to end it i don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team every ball club wants to be dominant at home winning a game like this just helps to boost the
