The Cardinals Cowboy Up | Cardinals Insider: S10, E14 | St. Louis Cardinals
coming up on Cardinals Insider nothing fits quite like a cowboy hat in Texas Nothing wrong with playing Jane They be like this Plus a group of Cardinals take in some baseball history This is quite the honor man And I’m definitely blessed and honored to be here And later you probably know by now but these Cardinals are younger All that and so much more straight ahead on a brand new Cardinals Insider [Music] Welcome to Cardinals Insider I’m Azie Smith On a recent day off in Texas a group of Cardinals got together to design their own cowboy hats Take a look [Music] Howdy Cardinals fans We’re here in Texas What else is there to do in Texas but get yourself a nice big old 10gallon cowboy hat [Music] can I get a like one of the light tan ones i’m a I’m like a seven and 58 probably Yeah big head A lot of hair You look like a black hat kind of guy too Oh yeah Yeah Yeah that’s cool with me These things are sick Now I got to go get a buckle and some boots Pictures I think are the most cowboy of the of the bunch Make sure it doesn’t come loose No that’ll work I have like five pairs of boots Like five hats five boots mix and match Couple like rodeo cowboy shirts I got for the for the trip here Making it official now guys Put the stamp on it There you go Now I can be actual cowboy You know what I’m saying i don’t know where I’m wear this to I’mma wear it though You got to wear it I might wear it with like sweatpants It’s backward Yeah Oh god There you go Oh I tweet I tweet [Music] Yeah Howdy Little horses in there Okay I’ll just Very nice I’m I put the um I got the cards in my hat the ace of hearts and then the ace of spades old western cards and I got uh this wrap around this band right here And then this feather So I got some cool little modifications Just a plain little black hat plain Jane Nothing wrong with a plain Jane They like this Put some you know some some red some feathers on there for the cardinals for the birds And I got the little the Buffalo nickels on the band there And then sticking with the Buffalo theme I want the the Buffalo Bill That’s how it’s done Now you just blend right in with the the local people with the towns folk Right Straight ahead on Cardinals Insider some players take a walk through history at the Negro Leagues Museum Definitely excited to be here and excited to come [Music] The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City is one of our games most hallowed locations It tells a story of some of the sport’s best players and personalities and serves as an important place for reflection Last month a group of Cardinals got a tour of the museum during an off day in KC In the case of these tremendously talented and courageous athletes they knew full well that they were good enough to play in the major leagues So close to it yet so far from it So from most vantage points in the museum you can see the field but you can’t get to it And the only way that you’re allowed to take the field here you have to earn that right And you do so by learning their story My dad’s been a few times um and him and my mom convinced me and he really wanted me to come to the Negro League Museum If I got my opportunity definitely excited to be here and excited to come It started in a one room office across the street That office was went no bigger than this area that we’re standing in It had a conference room table and some photos on the wall and a few boxes of memorabilia and that was the Negro Leagues Museum At that time there were a number of Negro Leaguers who were still living in Kansas City and they literally took turns paying the monthly rent to keep the little office open That’s how we got started We are as grassroots an institution as you will ever encounter No one gave the Negro Leagues Museum any chance of succeeding Here we are now three decades plus later recognized as America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum It’s just an honor to be here amongst a lot of these great players Um to understand some of the historic facts about just like the Negro Leagues and understand these things I mean this is something that helped pave the way for me as an African-American baseball player This is quite the honor man and I’m definitely blessed and honored to be here You will never see a greater example of love in the game than you do when you walk through this museum And I think for every major league athlete it’s a natural for the black and brown athlete But I think no matter what color you are that is what you draw from because every major league athlete understands how challenging this game is to play under the best of circumstances But when you see the backdrop in which they had to play it against it makes it that much more special And I think they all embrace that by the time they walk away from this experience Straight ahead It reminds me as a kid being in the Big Brothers Big Sisters That’s right after the break [Music] No place takes you in-depth with the Cardinals like our YouTube channel Get to know the players Come along for one of a kind experiences and hang out with personalities from across Cardinals Nation Plus we capture the days and moments that make Cardinals baseball so special Just search St Louis Cardinals on YouTube and be sure to subscribe so you never miss a video St Louis Cardinals baseball The Cardinals are committed to making an impact off the field too Here’s a look at how they’ve been doing that lately So we’re here today from City and we’ve joined forces with the Cardinals Blues and Battlehawks to participate in an auction to raise money for tornado relief So we’re just here to tell people about it and hopefully raise a bunch of money to uh give back to the city In sports everyone’s so busy the schedules are demanding but there are things that are bigger than sports and I think giving back to the city is something that’s core to our mission and core to all of the clubs So we’re excited to be able to find an opportunity to not only work together but to really benefit the city Uh we have a series of things that that are going on tonight to to help raise funds at our website cardinals.comclreovers There’s several auction items uh that each team created Uh just experiences that a fan wouldn’t normally be able to purchase as well as some autograph memorabilia including some things from our friends from the Chiefs and the Royals The 50/50 from tonight Uh half of it will go to a lucky fan and the other half will go to the tornado recovery fund Um and we also have a ticket offer where between 6 and 10 if anyone purchases a ticket for any game the rest of the season $10 from every ticket sold will go to the tornado recovery fund I was out you know the Saturday morning afterward chainsawing but we also were very proud to move as quickly as we did but we had a staff volunteer day and 50 folks from St Louis City SC joined us and we went out and helped up clean up debris and um you know just tried to give a boost And then the next week we brought six of our players up to the Urban League of St Louis and donated a pallet of water from our partners at Annheiser Bush and really just looking for ways to continue the recovery I think we all worked really well together Very appreciative of the other teams for the packages that they put together They’re really really great Um and something I think a lot of fans would enjoy So I’m just glad we were able to do it and um hopefully raise a lot of money And no matter what sport it is these are our fans right and this is our community We all live here We all love St And when you see your neighbors hurting right you look for a way to jump in and see what you can do to make it better Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adults with kids who desire mentorship That kind of service is right up the alley for St Louis’s own Edward Jones So it was a natural fit for the two organizations to partner on an incredible evening at Bush Stadium [Music] This is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri And we have over 300 of our volunteers we have our kids we have our families our alumni and we are all just here um we have this um huge event sponsored by Edward Jones um for us just to come out and have a great time here at Bush Stadium This is our second annual time doing it And as soon as we put out the alert that we were having it it filled up immediately [Music] Ever Jones and the St Louis Cardinals know how to rally as a team We share shared purpose of making a positive impact in our communities And this is the perfect opportunity to do that To us at Ever Jones this is what it’s all about It’s about how do we make a difference and how do we really come together with our communities and having the opportunity to have this home in here is such a great opportunity and something that not everybody gets to do every day It brings back so many memories of me being here It reminds me as a kid to being in the Big Brothers Big Sisters It gave me an avenue of inspiration to look forward to It really impacted my journey It was just a prolific thing that it did that for me to come out each and every day And and as an athlete today you rich by what you give and not by what you have You know my most valuable commodity is my time And so I look forward to giving my time to kids that need it that could be inspired each and every day [Music] You go to our website It’s simple It’s just bbbm.org And you can help us in a couple of different ways Number one you can always donate We’re always looking for funds especially right now Two we love for you to mentor Become a volunteer Um we’re looking for great humans Doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 81 We would love for you to mentor our youth So always a great way to be able to be involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters Still on deck How are you my friend good to see you as well So good to see you man That’s right after the break [Music] We’re celebrating 10 seasons of Cardinals Insider this year So throughout the year we’ve been taking time to revisit some of our favorite features Here’s a conversation from 2022 that certainly fits that bill How are you my friend good to see you pal So good to see you man How’s everything everything’s great Everything is great Awesome Uh thanks for doing this Yeah buddy I feel like on some level you’re more willing to do this kind of stuff than maybe you’ve ever been Am I Am I right about that that you kind of want to document this last season in St Louis probably You know I think it’s really special I think uh you know just remember 22 what 22 years ago I mean first time stepping on the field Where was it where was the old stadium right across the street I think Back that way Yeah And to be able you know to be back and just reflect on everything you know uh 10 years after you leave here and come back and just have another opportunity you know to finish your career where everything started for me is uh just a blessing you know So I really try to enjoy every moment you know every time that I take the the field um every session that I go for the last time because it is going to be the last time that I go as an active player you know Are you thinking numbers or when when does it when does that moment get you is it when you get past first base is it or or even at all i don’t I you know I I’m going to have plenty of time to look back and really sit down with my kids and friends and really look the amazing things that I done in this game Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I don’t know where I standing in history but it’s hard It’s hard for me and I’m being honest to you It’s hard for me to really like focus on the number when I’m an active player you know because I know that there’s going to be more Where where where do you think you get the ability to block out the pressure because it’s been that way since the first time I saw you in 2001 in spring training and I remember Tony Larusa telling my dad and me I want to see this kid fail once Like that game you guys played in that spring training I don’t know if you remember it I do It was at the Atlanta Braves and he started you at shortstop and you hit a home run over the scoreboard Yeah And Larusa came to my dad and me the next day He’s like “This kid’s unbelievable.” Like I I put him in positions where I expect him to fail just so we’re not taking this kid along if he’s not ready You proved you were ready then you prove you’re ready every time How do you block that pressure out where does it come from that’s great That’s a great question because sometime I even asking myself where does it come from and it’s a gift It’s a gift from God you know i mean it’s a gift on a ball This is what I tell these young players right now like man the early that you can pick this thing and the early that you can separate what you want the better superstar the best successor you’re going to have in this game At the end of the day just never take anything for granted No matter what kind of success you have no matter what kind of year whether MVP or bad year just try to get better and better every year And that’s something that I have separated in my life It’s time for this week’s trivia question brought to you by Ford In what year did the current Bush Stadium open was it 1996 2000 2004 or 2006 the answer when we return [Music] It’s time for the answer to our trivia question which centers around the opening of the current Bush Stadium It’s time for this week’s trivia question as always brought to you by our friends at Ford And the subject matter is well this ballpark Bush Stadium 3 The specific question we’re asking is in what year or baseball season did this ballpark open the answer is 2006 Bush 3 began construction in early 2004 but because about half of the stadium over overlapped with the footprint of the previous stadium Bush 2 it wasn’t possible for construction to be entirely completed by the start of the 2006 season In fact towards the end of 2005 Old Bush and New Bush were coexisting at least in part Bush 2 came down shortly after the final out of the 2005 NLCS Construction went 24/7 until opening day 2006 but still about 6,000 seats were yet to be installed in the left field upper decks Even so the Cardinals beat the Brewers that game 6 to4 thanks to an Albert Pooh’s home run And there she goes off the bat of Puhol The first Cardinal home run in the new ballpark and Boohh’s got it all The first season in the new stadium proved to be a magic one The Cardinals won the World Series that year beating the Detroit Tigers four games to one The O2 pitch swinging a miss That’s it And the St Louis Cardinals are world champions in 2006 Bush three hosted All-Star Week in 2009 This ball is gone out to left center field Back it goes four home runs Even more importantly it’s been the setting for three World Series 2006 11 and 13 with the Cardinals winning two of them right here in St Louis in the air to left Well hit Back is Craig What a team What a ride The Cardinals are world champs in 2011 There’s also been NCAA football games international soccer matches the NHL’s Winter Classic and several concerts during its 19y year and 20 season history Each event stacking a new chapter to its legacy just like the bricks that make up the fixture of this downtown St Louis landmark For Cardinals Insider I’m Brett McMillan Still to come on Cardinals Insider they’re young and hungry so we’ve been calling them hungry More on that when we come back [Music] The 2025 Cardinals are playing an exciting brand of baseball There’s plenty of young guys and an entire roster of players who are hungry to win We think the combo makes them hungry [Music] Dang it Please turn that speaker up Oh my god [Music] [Music] [Music] Swag high drive Belt in left center The ball is gone Swing in a line drive in a left field The base hit Berles got a great jump That ball gets to the wall What a blackjack power Now we up 24 Going to hit the showers And the unbelievers dedicated to Jesus If you need a better [Music] that’s it for this episode You can catch us online at 400 p.m each Friday at cardinals.com/insider and on YouTube Thanks for joining us and we’ll see you right back here next week

YAY!
Idk if anyone watches insider sorry Wizard Ozzie
Just your weekly reminder that the St. Louis Cardinals are the GREATEST team in the league and will be TWELVE-time World Series champions in the fall.
They all look quite sexy in those cowboy hats!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Even tho Miles hasn't been a lights out pitcher for us, he sure has one hell of a personality. I just wish he could have pitched better for us. Consummate professional.
I saw arenado for a second. Why didn't he talk and show off his hat??
