REPORT: Roster Spot Is “No Gimme” For Malachi Corley | New York Jets News

[Music] all right guys what’s going on welcome in so Rich Sini of ESPN just released an article over on ESPN man coming out of left field right early on a Saturday morning about Malachi Corley the uh articles titled Jets wide receiver Malachi Corley has lots to prove in his second year now the article basically dives into Corley’s career up to this point right talked a little bit about him at at Western Kentucky how the Jets went about drafting him right joe Douglas was 100% sold Robert Solo was 100% sold and despite trading up for Corley he just didn’t really make that much of an impact last season and you’re asking the question okay you know who’s to blame here for this just weird weird unproductive season right because it’s just very strange when you hear teams like the Lions like the Chiefs like the Eagles whoever it may be when you hear about maybe like that behind the scenes behind the curtain look like “Oh my gosh this franchise loves this player in the draft they’re trying to make it happen there’s you know talks between the GM and the head coach they’re both on board they want to make it happen they feel like he’s a good system fit they trade up and they do acquire that player most of the time you know that player either works out or there’s at least a plan in place for that player to learn grow and develop but with this whole Corley thing it just didn’t feel like again there there’s just a lot of blame here right who who’s the main one to blame is it Corley himself was it Robert Salah was it uh Nathaniel Hackett and the just the the putri offense that we saw last season todd Downing was it Aaron Rogers fault was it Joe Douglas’s fault i mean Douglas said that he was the fourth ranked wide receiver in the class over Keon Coleman over Brian Thomas from Jacksonville you know coming out of LSU at the time brian Thomas was my third ranked wide receiver in the class last season um man so like again whenever you just kind of have that alignment with the franchise you know with prominent figures in the organization and there’s not that plan in place you know it makes you ask the question what is going on here now the big thing with Corly last season was oh he can’t play special teams so he wasn’t listed as an active player uh many times throughout the season so you know I don’t know if that changes this year or or not right obviously Corley is dealing with an injury he’s missed a lot of time so far up uh through this point and this is you know where um Simini kind of dives into here with the whole Aaron Glenn aspect you know it seems like the Jets are are fully backing Corley like young player i mean dude’s entering his second year and he’s a super productive player back in college obviously he has the speed the acceleration playmaking ability with the football in his hands to impact an NFL offense um I’m you know I would really like to see Corley as a return man just give give him a shot and see what he can do but again as Samini points out here Glenn said that uh here’s what I remember from Corley his ability to get the ball in his hands and make something happen when you have a player like that the first thing you think about is screens you think about punt return kick return you think about things like that we’ve heard Tanner Ingstrand say that he’s going to have to find a way to catch himself up because he’s missed so much time and then uh wide receiver coach Sean Jefferson said “My old coach Bill Parcels used to say the first thing you need to be is you need to be available he’s missed some time and there’s a learning curve here so he’s in catch-up mode right now.” And when Samini first posted the article the the little uh maybe description that he that he put on Twitter was pressure is on Malachi Corley after a disappointing rookie year roster spot is no gimme needs to show growth as a route runner and with his overall approach so man we’ll see how this whole thing plays out um it’s hard to imagine the Jets cutting Corley you know I I I understand that Darren Muji Aaron Glenn these guys didn’t draft him but you know a part of me is is looking at Corley like if this guy like I could easily see him winding up on another team somewhere and all of a sudden them cracking the code and you know once Corley’s healthy and he figures it out and he’s a he’s a productive player not saying he’s going to be a top 15 guy or anything but there are positives to Corley’s game there are things that a coach should like now I you know I think the real question is you know with the Jets wide receiving core where does he fit in right where does he fit in you have Aren Smith kind of being the deep threat option you have Garrett Wilson being the wide receiver one then you have a bunch of you know guys in that wide receiver two range that Alan Lazard Tyler Johnson Josh Reynolds Reynolds has uh turned some heads so far through camp um and then you also have the slot right who’s going to be the primary slot guy xavier Gibson is still on the team uh Pritchette from South Alabama who was brought in as an undrafted free agent like this this w to me at least this outside of Garrett Wilson this wide receiver core is wide open like if if you want a starting spot it’s there for the taking and I gotta be honest I I can’t think of another team another wide receiver room where you know it’s it’s maybe this wide open uh in other words the path to seeing the field even if you’re buried on the depth chart today the path to seeing the field I would say is a little bit more clear than the majority of teams in the NFL you know I I’m really having a hard time maybe pinpointing a team out there that has a uh like a unclear situation at the wide receiver room so this has got to be the spot where you know if Corley sees the field it’s got to be with the Jets but yeah according to Rich Sini here nothing is guaranteed uh again obviously these guys didn’t draft Corley here running the show now so we’ll see what happens anyway let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section enjoy your Saturday and as always go Jets [Music] hey

  1. Garrett Wilson aside, the wr corp is a disaster. Corley being just another huge swing and a miss as a mid/late round WR.
Then again why worry? Justin Fields cant throw ball anyway.

  2. This means either 1 of 2 things, or both

    1. Arian Smith is proving he’s infinitely more valuable/better player
    2. Malachi Corley was simply a missed pick and a reach

  3. Not only did Corley drop the ball at the goal line, but sometimes even veterans like Davante hold the ball up like a trophy when they're still being chased into the end zone.

  4. I think that everyone will have to earn their spot on the team. Last year isn't the year you want on your resume. Why is Rucker still here but now he's being praised I'd say he's on the bubble too

  5. Once again it shows how Overated JD was as a Gm. He signed KC's Hardeman to a big contract and than we traded him because he was bypassed by FA Xavier Gibson. JD missed on all his WR's not named Garret Wilson, i.e. Denzel Mims, and Corley. He signed Lazard to a ridiculous deal to please Rodgers.

  6. Idk i still have faith in him, he hasn't even had a shot? When we did draw up a play for him he went 20+ yards and basically scored a TD. Watching his college highlights he still looks like a beast in a deep deep draft. I hope he proves everyone wrong

  7. Corley just finished his rookie year and certainly had some growing pains. Rodgers doesn't favor rookies. Hackett and Downing likely kept him off the field. Get him some targets. Don't give up on a high round draft pick after 1 yr. Hopefully Malachi or Arian can contribute this year.

  8. I’m not shocked by this. It’s basically saying everyone is expendable to a degree has to earn their spot. Corley does have a ton to prove.

  9. Look stop jumping the gun on the kid, he had that dum move ok cool, move the fuck on. This kid is a swiss arm knife and he didn't get a chance last yard, other than that fumble he hasn't been given a chance to show his abilities.. like bra said the second wr spot is wilde open, let's just wait and see wat he can do with giving a chance TO TF

  10. The problem is Corley was a great yards after catch player in college against really bad D1 competition. Now he’s playing against NFL players. His only strength in college (YAC) is now gone

  11. Not surprised. Please lmk what receiver has proven to develop into a WR2 caliber player outside of blue chip territory from the draft. The old regime lacked an eye for WR talent. Arian Smith is already better than most of the receivers they’ve drafted outside of Gdub(who was a blue chip)

  12. Ian Corley wasn’t given a real shot, better inept Offensive scheme of Hackett and Downing smh
And Rodgers just throws to the guys he wants and everybody else gets crumbs! Corley if given a shot will Do well!!

  13. Engstrand called him out when asked. Said, Corley should be way more proactive. Mims was also a legend in his own mind. Hopefully, he snaps to it for his own sake.
