Green a couple of tremendous diving catches and Casey Mai leaves early We’ll discuss the Casey Me injury news of course As always I’ll have my biggest talking point our turning point and our player of the game Little ninth inning run explosion for the Detroit Tigers Still some questions in the bullpen as well but the the losing streak ends and hopefully it’s the beginning of a winning streak and the Tigers still have not lost four in a row this entire season So buckle up dial it in get your comments ready because it is always always a collaborative environment here on the Lockdown Tigers post Let your voice be heard And we begin where we always begin with our biggest talking point and our biggest takeaway Don’t have the graphics today My apologies So we’ll just get right into it Unbuckle And here we go I think when you talk about this as the biggest take uh takeaway from today is the fact that the Tigers did what it took to earn the 9-3 win and up until the after that well really in the midst of that rain delay as it began pouring pouring at Georgetown Burner Field in the ninth inning Of course the Tigers six runs in the ninth and the two for the Rays make this a 9-3 game which looks a lot different than a one-run game all the way through until the seventh inning when Wel Perez hits that tworun home run Got to give Wel a lot of credit there off the bat from the right-handed side He’s had the power going from the right-handed side and for um Wel Perez on the home run It’s his sixth of the season and of course in a year that has been a little bit shortened by the injury So you love to see that That really turned this game But overall up until then you’re worried at least concerned about this Tigers offense and how they hadn’t shown up for the entirety Um and there’s been games where they’ve they’ve really lacked that ability And when you start to lose you know you point to one thing or another The bullpen hadn’t been as good The starting pitching had allowed the Rays to get ahead early and often in the first two games of the series So just whatever This is what good teams do They don’t allow losing streaks to swell and grow and grow and grow And I think winning in today’s game in whatever capacity whatever it looked like was priority number one Now with Casey Mai’s leaving the thought is it’s a uh reagravation of the hamstring injury or at least a tweak Um let’s hope it’s nothing serious Obviously more will come out on that over the uh coming days And you know what if he goes back on the injured list Man this is just another example of this Tigers pitching staff being battered with injuries and of course Job done for the year and the uncertainty um that this entire pitching staff has dealt with Reese Olsson working his way back and all of the injuries that this Tigers team on the pitching side of things have dealt with you know you begin to start to think all right this is hopefully hopefully with Casey Mai it’s just at worst uh a minor minor hamstring thing where he misses a couple of starts then you get into the All-Star break and you start to feel healthy from there But let’s get to your comments here on a live locked Tigers postcast And you know what I will say this as part of what we’re talking about in this one the the bullpen pitching from the Tigers Tommy Canley an inning and a third um in this one It got a little bit dicey there Gets a nice double play Uh Chase Lee um goes in and gets two outs in this one as well Um Tyler Holton looked much much better He did give up the double but he got that soft ground ball that led to the double play Um and and I guess the double came after that but a clean inning from Tyler Holton besides the one double doesn’t give up a run but Herder is uh who you’re concerned about um I mean doesn’t get uh again Brandt Herder comes in and it’s after a rain delay I mean everybody had been sitting for for so long but he walks to gives up the two earned runs and you start to think maybe this is a guy that uh is is not ready to be a big league relief pitcher based on what we saw from today But lots to take away from today And I hope I mentioned this enough but that’s what the pe the the kind the best the wonderful people of the Lockdown Tigers post are here for Jason Walter reminding me that Riley Green is ridiculous Not one not two but three tremendous plays in the field showing off the leather Riley Green’s defense really gave the Tigers a boost in this one that momentum that you pick up from web gem plays that we saw from Riley Green Just incredible stuff Gary Meyers says “We needed this one Great finish Hopefully Mai is all good.” Honestly that’s that’s you could kind of summarize the show right there that hey Tigers needed this one They got it Hopefully at not the cost of losing Casey Mai for an extended amount of time but the fact that the offense came alive in that ninth inning I mean there was they they batted 11 guys came to the plate in that ninth inning They scored the six runs and it started with Riley Green and Spencer Tolson who you love to see and the Parker Meadows three-run homer should have mentioned that early and hopefully you know Benetti Jason Benetti and Peaches Dan Petri talked about this that Parker Meadows a guy that is just like last year had that home run against the Cincinnati Reds that seemed to break open that slump he was in at the plate and he’s been in a similar slump this year offensively So maybe this is even though it wasn’t you know necessarily a high leverage moment like the home run I always go go back to that grand slammy hit against the San Diego Padres’s last year but this this being the uh the way that you know you can just something about the feel of a huge momentous three-run homer that broke this game wide open It was the dagger in the ninth inning Maybe it’ll be what Parker Meadows needs to sustain a more consistent level at the plate DT Lions says “God why does Hinch still use Herder as much as he does The guy needs to get off our team.” Yeah I I will be curious if if we’re not seeing a uh designation for assignment coming for Herder and sending him back to uh Triple A Um because I’d be curious to see if he still remains on at the big league level with this team Gray Matters up next screen is second only to judge in initial AL outfielder all-star voting still feels like he’s somehow underrated Yeah a lot of different ways to to kind of define or determine you know uh player ratings likeliness likeness whatever it is all-star voting is one of them It is kind of a popularity contest I don’t know how many people are truly diving in to the analytics and the numbers before they’re voting It’s it’s you know what teams have uh campaigns going at the ballpark when they’re home and say “Hey vote for your Tiger and vote for uh the All-Star.” So I don’t want to necessarily put too much into the fan voting but Riley Green it feels like he’s just on the cusp of becoming that superstar that we knew we in Detroit always knew and always believed but kind of the the rest of Major League Baseball can see as he continues to make highlight real play highlight real play and get it done at the plate as well The dude is up next I have real concerns about our relief pitching but glass half full Riley Green has to be a gold glove contender this year I would agree with that and I would also agree with the concern on the bullpen side of things Demetrius McNeel the Ford fireworks are tomorrow and the Tigers create their fireworks of their own by scoring six runs in the ninth inning and forcing the Rays to put their brooms away Who wins game seven tonight That’s right you got an NBA game seven tonight I think the Pacers get it done on the road Shock the world We’ll see This could age very very poorly if you’re listening to this at a later time in the audio only version which is a good reminder you can catch every single show on all of your podcast win though against a hit team and avoid the sweep probably means good team because the Rays are the best team in baseball in the month of June and have been uh just absolutely on fire Now depending on what happens with the rest of the American League Central the Rays starting or the Rays the Royals starting to play uh much better Um they’ve won I believe I want to say five out of six Don’t quote me on that Um but the Tigers lead in the Central Still on the Guardians It’s at nine games now depend on what happens and again depending on when you’re listening to this with what happens for the Guardians and Athletics later on today It could be 9 and a half by the end of the afternoon All right let’s continue to break this one down as we’ve got a lot to get to still on the live locked on avoid the sweep on a Sunday afternoon that endured a rain delay because who knew it rains quite a bit in June in Tampa Bay Now that being said for the Tigers they return home after an off day tomorrow to face the Athletics Looking forward to that one Always good to be back at Com Park Then the Twins will come to town And for the upcoming pitching matchups you got Scubble going on Tuesday uh against Luis Cerv um Severino which will be a good pitching matchup there Flity will go on Wednesday You want to see him bounce back And the Tigers have not named their starter for Thursday’s day game But more on this one How about our player of the game It’s Riley Green We don’t have the fancy uh musical element elements production elements I’m not sure what happened to be honest Sometimes the old technology plays some tricks on you So just imagine in your head or maybe I’ll do my best Here is tonight’s player of the game Yeah that was terrible But it’s it’s Riley Green I mean the guy makes some incredible catches in the field And by some I mean three huge catches couple of uh ribbies at the plate In fact let’s give him um or I beg you pardon he scored a couple of runs That’s right He was starting that rally in the ninth inning But three more hits at the plate Just a tremendous game all the way around for Riley Green Now turning point again we don’t have the sounder so bear with me turning point in this one the Wel Perez home run in a 1-1 game making it three to one You’ll love to see it from Wel Perez who continues to be an impact player He just I just get uh you remember those commercials that the the batteries the Energizer Bunny I get that type of vibe from Wel Perez He just always inserts energy into this Detroit Tigers team So you love to see it All right Um Mark reporting that uh uh it’s just a cramp for Mai Let’s hope that’s the case Um and maybe he won’t uh maybe he won’t need to miss extended time Let’s hope for that Mark also pointing out Carpenter and Torque haven’t had good at bats Torque did hit a couple hard this series so hopefully he’ll turn it around I agree Had the RBI that scored Riley Green in that ninth inning as well So good stuff there all the way around And hey we’ll take a win to end the losing streak That’s for sure And now let’s see if the Tigers can go home and take care of a couple of inferior teams in my opinion in the Athletics and the Twins before getting back on the road I believe it’s the Washington Nationals who are their first series on the road All right let’s go ahead and close this one out It’s always a Detroit Tigers beat Tampa Bay Rays 9-3 in the series finale to avoid the sweep at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Bay. Casey Mize left the game in the sixth inning with an apparent lower body injury. Detroit Tigers offense broke out in a big way in the top of the 9th with a 6-run inning to take the game from 3-1 to blow it open for the 9-3 final. Wenceel Perez had the big go-ahead two run home run in the 7th inning to make it 3-1. Detroit Tigers Bullpen pitched four scoreless innings after Casey Mize left due to injury. Detroit Tigers will have an off day tomorrow before returning home for a series against the Athletics and the Minnesota Twins.
