Atlanta Falcons Attempted A MAJOR NFL Move
[Music] the Atlanta Falcons nearly made a pretty sizable move for the middle of June we’re going to talk about that on today’s episode welcome on into Falcons today by Chat Sports matthew Peterson here talking about how Gier Alexander the Pro Bowl corner recently with the Green Bay Packers now with the Baltimore Ravens was nearly an Atlanta Falcon so ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was on NFL Live on ESPN and he was talking about Alexander’s you know brief time in free agency the background is Jier Alexander was with the Packers first round pick out of Louisville really successful with them early on the last couple of years he’s run into some injury problems and he’s also just been a bit of a headache I think to put lightly for the team he was given the biggest contract at his position’s history for a brief period in time but was you know topped not long later by a different corner but still he was supposed to be the face of that secondary in the frozen tundra and you know a few short years later he’s out the Packers were looking to trade him i’m guessing no one wanted to take on that contract so they had to just release him and kind of accept the loss as is but the Falcons according to Fowler were in on signing Alexander here’s what Jeremy Fowler said and I’ll put it on screen for you guys to see there were some other teams involved i was told Alexander thought about the Atlanta Falcons where he had relationship relationships to the coaching staff there so the reference that Fowler is making here is coach Jerry Gray he’s the DB coach with the Atlanta Falcons he survived a regime change from Arthur Smith by the way RIP to his dad i don’t know if you saw this the his dad the owner CEO of FedEx passed away um and he survived that regime change and has been with Raheem Morris you know since then and I mean I saw what Alexander had to say about when Jerry Gray left the Green Bay Packers to come to the Atlanta Falcons and Gray said “Man I was sad i almost shed a tear.” or Alexander said that about Gray leaving so I’m not shocked that you’re seeing Alexander who’s trying to kind of turn his career around a little bit wants to reunite with a coaching you know a coach that was so crucial in his development early on with the Packers so that to me does not blow me away from the standpoint of why would Alexander have interest in the Falcons well because he wants to reunite with the coach he had a lot of success with but let’s talk about why the Falcons would have interest in Jaire so let’s start by just looking at Alexander as a player and then we can look at the Falcons roster currently so looking at Alexander’s uh kind of stats over the last couple of years and you guys can see it for yourself the number one thing that jumps out to me I’m guessing it jumped out to you as well was the lack of availability you can see what Alexander did the first few years of his NFL career and he hardly missed much time at all sure a couple of games as a rookie but that’s not very uncommon right you come from college and all of a sudden you’re expected to play four or five more games than you did in co then you you come from college and expect to play four or five more games in the NFL than you did in college so your body’s just not quite prepared for a longer season that’s uh very you know common for rookies to run into but then he really starts to run into injury issues he played just four games in 2021 he bounces back in 2022 it’s a Pro Bowl campaign he starts all 16 games or start 16 out of 17 games five interceptions but the last two years combined he hasn’t even played a full season seven games in 2023 and 2024 not all because of injuries either he was suspended a little bit by the team i remember the game when the Packers went to Carolina he went to Louisville jer Alexander he’s from Charlotte and Alexander decided you know what i feel like being the captain today and going out for the coin toss i’m playing in my hometown and I want to be there for this and the Packers were a nononsense um organization and said “Hey we didn’t put you in charge of that and we’re not going to have guys just willy-nilly decide when they want to be captain and when they want to go out for the coin toss so you’re suspended next game.” And I guess you know kudos to the Packers for not tolerating that type of nonsense because that can kind of radiate throughout the locker room a little bit and nonsense is probably an exaggeration but they have a way of doing things and if you’re going to step out of line they’re going to make sure you step back you know in line but the last two years Alexander has only played 14 games and has a combined two interceptions over that two-year span so production-wise not great but ceiling wise it’s there i mean he’s got 12 interceptions in his career and when he was healthy early on in his career he was an awesome lock down outside corner which brings me to my next point we talked about Alexander as a player let’s talk about the fit with the Falcons so Atlanta’s three starting corners if they had to trot out three guys for a game tomorrow would be AJ Terrell Mike Hughes and D alfred at Nickel i think that’s a group that Morris can work withish but probably isn’t in love with he loves Terrell i think he likes Hughes a lot i mean they’ve resigned him to a three-year contract so you could almost say he loves Hughes right alfred is probably the squeakiest wheel and that is where I think Morris would be interested in making an upgrade if he views it as a slam dunk upgrade and this is the most important part of the video that I want you guys to take away from i don’t believe Morris and Fontineau are looking to just go add any corner i think they are looking to add corners they look at as leaps and bounds ahead of what they have at nickel and so if I had to guess the plan was probably let’s bring in Alexander we’re gonna put him at outside and we’re gonna kick Mike Hughes into nickel you’re not signing Jire and Al Jier Alexander an outside corner from the Packers to put him in a new position in Atlanta at least I hope not it’s not a very good plan in my opinion you’re moving Hughes a more versatile and flexible corner to a spot that you’re not very confident in and I say that not from a personal opinion standpoint but from kind of an objective standpoint d alfred was a restricted free agent that you let go test the market and the market said “No one wants to sign him.” And then the Falcons go “All right we’ll bring you back not because we really want to if they really wanted to they would have signed him in the first place not let him possibly go sign with another team but because well we only have five draft picks and we expect to use a lot of those picks on pass rushers it’s not a very deep cornerback draft so we’re not going to have an opportunity to really upgrade or even you know replenish our lines at corner in the draft why not bring you back someone who knows our defense and is going to give us the best you know option out there given the budget we have and the assets we have to use on that position but I still don’t think that means the Falcons are in love with Alfred starting at nickel and then there’s Clark Phillips who was a fourth round pick you know a few years ago now out of Utah who just really hasn’t broken through yet he’s had some you know reps he’s had some starts and games under his belt and I think he showed some flashes he showed some potential but I don’t think he’s shown enough for the Falcons to feel confident that hey you’re like at the same level of Terrell in our eyes in terms of how comfortable we are with you being our week one starting inside guy no they are with Terrell to the point of we don’t need to bring competition in right same kind of for Hughes but for inside no they probably weren’t there yet with Phillips which is why they brought Alfred back let those two guys compete for that starting job and they made it a priority after the draft by signing Kobe Bryant which is weird to say out loud um the Kansas cornerback who was a multi- you know um Big 12 player of the year Big 12 corner whatever defensive player of the year tons of accolades more or less so Alexander I think could come in and play outside and then move Hughes to inside and that would put together maybe the best trio the Falcons could field possible but this is all one big you know what if because it didn’t happen because Alexander signed you know contract with the Ravens and he reunites with his old Louisville teammate Lamar Jackson which I’ve seen a couple of times as if that’s like a storyline cool you think Lamar is out here going like “Wow we’re gonna play so much better now that my old Louisville corner is on the same team as me.” I felt that was a weird connection to make but whatever so the the next line of thinking is do the Falcons still have interest in adding a corner or was it Gier Alexander or Bust that’s what I want to talk about on tomorrow’s video so make sure you come back for that because if Atlanta is still looking to find another corner I’ve got one name in mind and I’m going to share that with you guys on tomorrow’s episode [Music]
