hello baseball fans and welcome an ALS matchup on the show it’s the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Angels first pitch coming your way next all right just about set to go towing the slab in today’s game you say Kikuchi and Singi he likes pitching at home well truly for him there is no place like home he’s been so dominant here and as a teammate you expect him when pitching at home this year to go out and dominate just as he has the fans expected and I think everyone around here knows that he’s a good pitcher even though we don’t see the same splits on the road we’re going to start to see that translate as well jeremy Pñena leading things off and takes a strike and a pitch the shorts stop takes the ball popped up foul territory behind a play has room and he makes the catch now we check out the Astros lineup a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus jeremy Pñena tops on the team in batting average boo a guy who’s showing off some excellent bat-to ball ability when he digs in at the plate you know that’s useful if your team needs to get an inning going get a leadoff man on but it’s also incredible to have a guy like that in the lineup because he’s a run producer who can drive in runs if you got guys on base already so he’s a huge piece in this lineup is Paradis stands in now and watches strike one check swing called strike hacks and misses it’s a strike out oh that’s a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer for Uncle Charlie and you can see why it’s not a looping slow curve he throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end and first off is fouled off [Music] [Applause] [Music] two down on he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away swung on belted This one could be trouble and he starts his afternoon off right with a double couldn’t have timed it up any better than that put a really nice balanced swing on it and when you can rope one into the gap like that you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box and he’ll feel real good about that one so the go-ahead run in scoring position and here’s the catcher Yiner Diaz just missed well you always want to come out in the first inning try to put something up on the board it’s a big two-out double right there see if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board man on second two down ball no and a foul ball makes the count two and one i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up and that’s a fair ball coming home he will score and they take the lead and it’s an RBI single one- nothing oh a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win two outs runner at first and stepping in for the Astros cam Smith in the air left side ward sizing this one up and he makes the catch and that is that but the RBI single pushes across a run it’s now one- nothing back here at Angel Stadium and pitching here today Shawn Duben and singing it’s not hard to see he’s been outstanding well you just take a look at the numbers erra in the low ones he’s clearly been one of the best pitchers in the league this year i mean just dynamic stuff it’s electric as well as it comes through the zone hitters trying to figure out what he’s doing so hard to think with and the only bad thing for him is that your ERA can really only go up it’s hard to take it down lower unless you throw a shut out so we’ll see what he’s got in this one the one and another ball [Applause] [Music] [Applause] swang and a miss as he was out front that time [Applause] next offering upstairs really good take especially with two strikes stays alive let’s go that one misses so a lead off walk now this was a story we were paying attention to before the game we’ve seen him give up walks in the past it’s an issue once again early on and next for the Angels Nolan Showell duben checks over to first and he’s back foul ball there runner the kick and the pitch runner goes next offering is fouled back in the air left field and there’s one down all right let’s take a look at the Angels line not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games Chris yeah Booan that can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now and that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs so we’ll see if everybody can just relax bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of that one is absolutely belted that’s back there and that one is out of here his 13th home run of the season and that gives him a lead it’s 2-1 he only needed one swing to square it up not wasting any time in that bad move aggressive and it paid off [Applause] when you have a team that hits home runs at such a high rate they can get back in the ball game so quickly that’s why that leadoff walk was extremely costly and now it’s the Angels cleanup battle taylor Ward and first offering is fouled off ward goes 6’1 200 lb a former first round pick back in 2015 [Applause] one down base is empty not close with that one and it’s one and one [Applause] this one high in the air to left center dubong on the move to the alley he’s got it and there’s two away batting fifth catcher Travis Darno here comes Travis Darno [Applause] swing and a miss no ball one strike next one misses one ball one strike he’s given up a couple of runs but the pitch count really not as high as you would think might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches swinging a popup altuve hauls it into the inning mike Trout doing Mike Trout things and this is now a 2-1 ball game it’s Major League Baseball on the show back in Anaheim new inning getting started and now it’s Christian Walker christian Walker one of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first he is that good with the glove you’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman kikuchi back to work no and that one upstairs ball one first baseman are involved in just about every single play so when you have somebody so solid over there uh you can breathe a little easier that clips a corner the other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times and he just handles them so well so he really makes the entire infield better with his glove you’re not just talking about the ability to pick Chris one of the things about him the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole that’s the third fair ball well that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there there’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield that’s just so satisfying as a hitter it’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there and now here’s the speed threat outfielder Jake Meyers ball on there and Chris beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively he also can swing the stick [Music] [Applause] that one back up the middle and it gets through lead runner to second so two on and nobody out couple of singles back to back once you get the ball by the pitcher there’s a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground balls so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself ahead first and second no outs stepping in Cooper Hmel fast for a strike 01 first and second no outs here in the top of the second [Applause] and ball one one two [Applause] fights that one away still one and two [Applause] just misses there man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s as close as it gets full count in the dirt but no advance from the runners strike three got him swinging and that is a big first out that’s a pretty nasty pitch right there i call it a power curve ball in the 80s it’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit it was a good one for the swinging strikeout here’s Mauricio Dubon good defender he’s been inconsistent offensively on the inside corner for a strike [Applause] walker at second meyers over at first with one away [Applause] ground ball right side it squirts through and they hold the runner at third but the bases are loaded now with one out now just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play that’s a team to bat right there nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep so next up for Houston Jeremy Pñena golden opportunity right here and that’s in for a strike he’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam he’ll one and strike two no ball two strike one out base is full fouled off the plate they’ll do it again [Applause] upstairs pretty standard high O2 fast ball right there if you’re smart you’ll look for something down in the zone but not too far i don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt on the ground could be two offbalance feet there’s one to first not in time great effort there i promise you they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI that was a possible inning ending double play great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it isach Paredus getting ready to hit struck out swinging his first time this one belted deep left field on its way gone he’ll take a trot around the bases his 17th of the year it’s 52 one pitch one swing one home run yeah you could say that’s efficiency right there didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact he got on plane with that high fast ball and look how his bat stays in the zone for a long time absolutely crushed that pitch so two down here’s the second baseman jose Altuve doubled his first time up and that’s downstairs and outside one ball no strikes [Applause] and it’s fouled away two out space is empty [Applause] fall there’s the strike this guy in the dish excels in two strike counts got to be careful with him out there on the mound [Applause] on the ground to first Shanowell he steps on the bag that’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring houston brings in three on this homer it’s 52 major League Baseball is on the show and welcome back to the ballpark and now the center fielder Joe Adele joe Adele [Applause] [Music] and that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0 this is a very important inning here after scoring all those runs you want your pitcher to come out and just mow them down the offense has worked hard it’s shut down inning time that one finds the zone and it’s one and one and a curb misses outside clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way left that curve ball way up the two-1 right side and foul ball twins and misses it’s a strike out pulled the string on the change up you know variant speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement as you see right there it really wasn’t a great location but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance and that’s all you got to do sometimes Lamont Wade Jr in the box now no balls in a strike [Music] come on Leavon that one pushed fouled one out base is empty come on Angel misses outside and the count is one and two oh he hit him and that got him pretty flush he had two strikes on him and he hit him now at the plate Luis Rango and second baseman Christian Moore that one’s upstairs ball one and another ball [Applause] next pitch is downstairs zack Neto on deck for the Angels two outs and ball four to a board four pitches that’s an easy walk man he could have walked me right there boo the last one wasn’t even close back to the top of the Angels lineup zack Neto the next to hit for the Angels the walk and a run scored his first time [Applause] there’s the strike man i mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was first and second two down bottom half of inning number two and a popup right side foul territory walker has room and he makes the catch and that will end the inning so they strand a pair we play two full it’s the Astros five and the Angels two and we’re back top half of the third inning and now the catcher comes up to him yiner Diaz and the first offering a fast ball for a strike i think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game and he’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start that misses and the count even one and one well these Astros doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side and here’s a stat for you Boo they’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at it’s pretty special stuff not so good if you’re out there on the mound [Music] two two and that one missing inside a sharp slider definitely a swing and miss slider down and in he finished that really well just couldn’t get him to offer at it and he grounds one to the right side throws to first leadoff hitter gone in the third now batting number 11 Cam Smith up next for the Astros fly to left his first time [Music] and that one is downstairs and that’s ball one timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up christian Walker up next for the Astros singled and scored his first time pitch misses ball one just off the inside edge [Music] [Applause] that one misses ball three and that’s ball four tried another slider but it missed the plate well two out walks are never good especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout but he’s still in a good spot he’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order well Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens and a strike [Applause] walker off of first with two away that one outside and now two balls and two strikes just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation can’t say he’s convinced but it looks like he’s accepted it comes the 2-2 and down strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one so the Astros lead one they’re still out in front 5-2 back here at Angel Stadium and here’s the first baseman Nolan Shadow nolan Shadow that’s too low ball one and another ball two count that clips the corner one way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they’re doing that right here yeah that’s fouled off [Music] full count he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked come on let’s go let’s on the ground right side tosses to first one gone bottom of the third inning now batting designated hitter M and now batting Mike Trout he’s already homerred here in this one he is quite an athlete i mean you look around the other sports basketball football you feel like he could thrive in one of those sports too and that’s in for a strike and that one pulled foul let’s [Music] go swing and a miss struck him out up next for the two out space is empty taylor Ward the next to hit for the Angels flying to left his first time and that’s downstairs and that is ball one fast ball in the inside corner for a strike one one and down on strikes he goes he’s notched four strikeouts now and the Angels are gone in order they trail at 52 back in Anaheim as we go to the top of the fourth and now the DH Cooper Hmel hmel 30 years old now and though usually in left field today he’s the designated hitter misses off the inside and one and one some guys don’t like not being able to play defense because it helps him to stay in the rhythm so for him to be the DH we’ll see if he gets a routine together swing and a miss struck him out make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today and next to hit for Houston Mauricio Dubonio one for one with a single so far [Music] and first offering is fouled off base is empty one away top half of inning number four next offering down in the dirt just missed was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher hauls it in for the two down very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity that’s foul that’s out number three one left for Houston and it remains 52 ready to go bottom four travis Darno digs in travis Darno [Music] there’s the strike you know these Angels showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one they’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well still relatively early but with a pair of runs already on the board the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game gets a piece there we’ll do it again [Applause] and there’s a ball two ball two strikes just misses the mark outside the zone [Applause] ground ball walker steps on first for the out now batting center fielder Joe Adele here’s Joe Adele he struck out swinging at his first at bat angels all right Angels and a foul ball popped foul out of play off to the right swing and a miss and he struck him out now five strikeouts for him on the mound he came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time a little anxious angeles Wade batting for the second time and that’s strike one we’re here in the bottom of the fourth los Angeles oh I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning anything after that a hitter or two is bonus but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line [Music] and they’ll do it again hit on the ground to short pñena zips it to first and it’s a one two three inning so they go quietly there we played four it’s the Astros five and the Angels two now pitching for Jose Soraniano comes on now and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year the numbers stack up with some of the best in the game here’s the former MVP Jose Altuve one for two jose Altuve swinging a foul out of play well these Astros putting together some really good at bats in this game there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished zips it across and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth now batting catcher Diner Diaz so here’s the Astros cleanup hitter Yiner Diaz and that one is in the dirt one and0 swinging a miss at a slider man 91 on the slider right there that’s a hard one that’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers the one two that one to first and he handles it himself for the out [Applause] two down base is empty and stepping in for the Astros Cam Smith for two in this one first pitch and that’s in for a strike and that one is lifted in the air wade puts it away and that is that back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound Frober Valdez still pretty early in the ball game so this bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that started left for him luis Rango digs in now went down on strikes his first time through misses outside and that’s ball one action in the pen down there josh her the veteran southpaw is getting ready to come on if needed there’s a swing and a drive and it’s off the wall around first digging for two and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double he was all over that one anytime you smoke a ball off the wall you kind of think about what it could have been but obviously you have to be happy with that result runner in scoring position no outs so in for the Angels Christian Moore walked his first time check swing and he went that’s strike one one ball one strike and a big swing and a miss good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it left field dubong makes the catch one away now batting the shortstop Zack so the batting order turns over here’s the shortstop at the plate zack Neto hitter’s got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit just off the outside edge and that’s ball two just missed first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count man at second on the ground right side and it goes just foul [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two got him swinging for the strike out and that’s strikeout number 100 on the year got away with that curveball no doubt about it it passed right through the heart of the strike zone and he just couldn’t get the bat on it when you strike out on one like that that’s when you start having conversations with yourself and they’re not usually very friendly and next for LA Nolan Showell in the dirt and that’s ball one ruer at second two down last half of inning number five hard on the ground to first he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it angels leave one and the deficit remains 52 top six and now the first baseman Christian Walker christian Walker soraniano back to work that’s in there that’s strike one looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located very top of the strike zone middle away [Applause] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 [Music] [Applause] on the go and score popped up shadowwell on the move and out number one on the grab jake Meyers up next for the Astros feels like it’s less common today that you see a guy like this the speed component the contact component but lack of power started after it appeal to first he went around according to Carl Dixon next offering is fouled back i think baseball’s starting to understand that those guys are valuable like they once were they need them in this game today runs it up to 96 to record the punch out two outs base is empty so now the Astros designated hitter Cooper Hmel who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts come on Angels let’s go that’s the third slings it across and the Astros put down in order here’s Trout and it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate yeah Boo a two-run blast and that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way [Applause] there’s the strike not many hitters go up there looking for an O breaking ball but a good way for the pitcher to get ahead in the count doublebarreled action in the bullpen brian Abrau the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening susa the lefty warming up as well pitch is in there oh and two now keeps the bat going with a foul ball that’s outside going to count one and two one ball two strikes and that just misses well he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here too two he’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat so might have it timed up and ready for it this ball’s chopped on the ground paradus one up one down he’s out [Music] now batting left fielder Taylor and next for the Angels Taylor Ward at 96 that pitch is in for a strike base is empty one away here in the bottom of the six swings through that one out in front that time stepping in for the Astros Mauricio Dubon soraniano a 63 righty he features a sinker a slur a fourseamer a splitter and he works in a slider check swing called strike that missed by a lot and a count two and one that one missing inside 3-1 in the air right side and there’s one down [Music] [Applause] now batting shorts stop Jeremy Pñena so up next Jeremy Pñena do it Angels on the ground to third throws to first in time up next for the Astros third baseman Isach Paredus still two down now and here is Isach Paredus and he had a big swing of the bat early on in the ball game yep a three-run rocket back in the second even though it was early a big homer like that can be tough to come back from when you’re on the other end of that thing i mean it’s tough sets up an uphill battle the rest of the way breaking ball through there for a strike there it was oh here it is hit it he gets a take gets ahead in the count and that gets the top of the zone for a strike this guy’s pounding this zone hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches that one in the dirt and a count one and two throwing the ball well and they need this scoreless inning and relief right here been doing a good job keeping them in striking distance not close with that one and it’s two and two two down nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven outside low three and two now and that’s ball four tried another slur but couldn’t find his own a great back and forth in that at bat he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there i’ll tell you right now I couldn’t have done it altuve in the box now as he leaves that one up high wow triple digits on the gun i know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past but it’s still impressive to watch and a swing and a miss there’s that slider wow no fair right there i mean that slider didn’t move till the very last moment incredibly difficult to pick that up just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch [Music] foul ball still a one and two count spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another two outs and a swing and a miss and that’s that now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh brian Abrau walks have been a big issue for him this year so I expect these hitters to be patient up there here’s and boy that was the pitch it’s 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast ball swings and misses struck him out this guy will throw any pitch in any count 32 he goes off speed gets the out third baseman Luis Reano luis Reanifo the next to hit for the Angels drove it off the wall last time just missed out on a home run oh he doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0 one ball no strikes in side all sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box they tried to get him to chase on a slider down and looks to be getting himself ready coachitz the right-hander also getting loose gets him to chase after that one yeah I don’t think anyone’s got good numbers swinging at pitches in that location out to [Applause] now a fly ball to right center wade pulls that one down and that is that back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth bennett Susa well he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him back to the top of the order now and now to short stop Zack got to keep things airtight defensively right here on your toes ready to make a play if you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead it should be a W off the mark there and that’s ball one activity in the Houston bullpen nick Hernandez the closer of the staff is throwing and that one wrapped foul the shorts stop takes a ball [Applause] ripped on the ground to second slings to first one gone in the bottom of the eighth if you want to be a great defense you have to deliver consistently it doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw nolan Shanowell now at the plate come on let’s go and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike and that is out of play lefty continues to work but the closer getting loose in the bullpen this to center field pulls up and that’s in there for a knock hitting is really easy for some guys one thing that I can see already his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane and even when you don’t get it great it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder to hit here one for four with a double [Music] [Applause] that’s through there for a strike felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch that’s the key try to get ahead in the count then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands next pitch is outside one run across in the frame so far here in the top of the ninth [Applause] to the right side they take the force one out left now that and next for the Angels Luis Rango [Music] [Applause] and that’s in for a strike two down nobody on we’re in the last half of the ninth inning they had a foul ball hernandez is just one strike away [Music] [Applause] two down to foul ball still 0 and two and that one almost got him [Music] [Applause] no that’s a ball that turns out to be a really good take right there but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder [Applause] lifted to left and that should do it and that’ll do it the ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house i mean it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall you just can’t forget your first save and your final six-2 for Chris Singleton and our entire
