MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Kansas City Royals – Jun 22, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about set to go now and today’s starting pitcher dylan cease and singy that may be his name but the strikeout is his game well boo i can tell you’ve been working on that one but yes you are right this guy’s strikeout per nine over 11 i mean that’s just getting it done there are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup and when you look at what he’s able to do man it’s going to be a fun one to watch today and to the plate for kansas city jonathan india swaging a ball hit out towards left center field it falls in and that’s a knock so a man on base to start the inning didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat put a pretty good jolt into that one great swing nice balance and weight transfer and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field now here’s bobby wit jr this guy is one of the best athletes in the sport at 96 that pitch is in for a strike you know boo this is a player with some serious speed in 2023 he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game come on dylan [Applause] down swinging for the strike out went back to the fast and it was effective and chris that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base and the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play but that’s how you do it keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy mikel garcia will hit next dylan fast is outside ce the 6’2 righty 29 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2014 man at first one away check on the runner and he’s back in easily just off the outside edge two and0 he’s clearly trying to work him away here both pitches off the plate if you really want to put the ball in play you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field that’s a great take right there even though it’s a strike with the situation runner on first base you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch most likely you roll into a double play [Applause] runner on the goal fouled off and they’ll do it again here’s the pitch runner goes again drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck that’s a base hit and they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single a perfect example right there that plate discipline it pays off the deeper he gets into account the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle two on one out benny pascantino now at the plate swinging a highf fly ball out towards right field drops into the glove runner tags for home and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead in that situation you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air worst case scenario a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third and now it’s salvador perez to the plate he’s a catcher by trade but the dh here in this one ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit throw stops the lead runner at second two on and two out batting six the first baseman jack now it’s the rookie first baseman jack kaggle leone [Applause] first pitch and he just misses this might be the most pressure you put on this guy today you got one run in you got to try to get another one or maybe two garcia over at second perez at first two out of the inning and another ball good spot for the hitter definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch [Applause] that missed by a lot and now 3 and 0 it’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on let’s see if they can cash in and they’re all loaded up he did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat so bases all loaded up freddy fine steps in for the royals in there for a strike at the top of the zone 01 so they’re all loaded up with two outs [Applause] clips the corner and that is strike two when a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact in the air center field squeezes it and that’s the third out so they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded bottom half of inning number one coming up it’s the royals one the padres’s coming to bat back here in san diego and starting in this one seth lugo and this will be a tough test for him pitching on the road has not been that kind to his numbers well i think he’s just got to trick himself mentally and put himself in a comfort level like he does at home i know it’s not the same being on the road as away from home in terms of being able to have a routine and be consistent with it but this game is so much mental and he’s going to have to find a way to play a mind game with himself to move through this ball game and get a w fernando tatiz jr the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one and a pitch and that’s in for a strike and the count is one and one well as a hitter you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game but if that’s how it’s going to be all day it’s going to be a tough one for the offense next offering is in for a strike [Applause] [Music] tatis waits battling here as he fouls it away gets a piece there we’ll do it again [Applause] here’s a high chopper and he’ll be safe at first that second hitter well as an offense you want to get the crowd involved right away get that good energy working for you but this time the defense does it for him always a great opportunity when you can get your leadoff guy on base to start the game and it doesn’t matter how it happens luis arise stands in and that one fouled off i love this part of the game does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher i know he’s fast but it’s pretty risky ruer at first with no outs here tatis runs pitch almost got him throw to second ow that goes to show you stealing a base is a tough thing to do and far from a sure thing even with big time speed it’s not easy to catch him but that was a great catch and throw quick not rushed and accurate [Music] little bit low 2-1 that one misses three and one now as a veteran out there on the ball you’re trying to establish both edges of the plate right here he’s working inside one down base is empty next pitch in for a strike counts full three and two and that one hit to first and he handles it himself for the out batting third let’s take a look at the padres’s lineup already trailing by a run in this one they’ll be looking to get on the scoreboard early on as well well it’s just the one run so not too big a hill to climb but yeah if they can answer back in this inning or at least in the next couple that’ll maybe settle everyone into this ball game and that includes their own starter on the mount two out space is empty and now manny machado strike one two out space is empty next offering is fouled back that one not close now one and two swinging a ground ball up the middle and it’s through for a hit and that keeps the inning going well i don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock here’s gavin sheets now left hand bat let’s go gavin in the air out towards right center isbel sizes this one up nabs it and that ends the inning padres’s leave one they trail here one- nothing second inning set to go now the left fielder nick loftton loftton [Music] and the first offering a fast ball for a strike looks like he sacrificed to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing some good hitters will do that 1-1 the one-1 is fouled off the one two blind drive that’s a base hit into right field so a runner aboard to start the inning good two strike hitting right there boo a bit of a lost start for some so that was nicely done to beat the odds showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit and now it’s kyle isbel that one ripped right center field dives what a play up next for the royals the second base jonathan indian this dive wasn’t the result of a bad route singy the only reason he made the plays because his route was so good no doubt boo statcast tells the same story i mean he got to his spot as quickly as you can possibly get there and he had to in order to have a chance at that diving play just special jonathan indie at the plate just missed and that’s downstairs two balls no strikes loftton the base runner at first with one out and that’s downstairs and outside [Music] yeah there’s the strike and ball four to a board the batter number seven and now the shorts stop bobby wit jr struck out swinging his first time ball on there and that’s a pitch early in this game he needs called for a strike struggling with command issues he’s got to get a little help from the umpire that one laced to center and a base hit here’s the throw to the plate it’s off the mark and he scores and they take a two-run lead puts a run on the board and picks up an rbi fast pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter so no surprise he put a great swing on it first and second one out and next up for the royals mikel garcia right through there for a strike [Applause] and that’s in for a strike traffic on the bases with one already in here in the top of the second foul ball still 0 and two [Applause] and ball one i don’t like to say he wasted a pitch i think that was a purpose pitch change the eye level have him look up now go back exactly where you want to go foul ball still a one and two count i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up two on one out switch through that one it’s a strike out he’s locked in at the break when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just need to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strike out and next will be the cleanup hitter vinnie pasquantino drove in a run with a sack fly his first time out [Applause] and that is out of play [Applause] and that one lifted in the air center field we should have this one brings it in and that is that so one run in the inning on this base hit and it’s two zip you’re watching major league baseball on the show back here at petco park here’s the short stop at the plate xander bogarts bogart fast ball for a strike going one first pitch strike right there for him he’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper and that’s a little bit high one ball one strike [Music] the shorts stop takes a ball foul ball another 22 upcoming let go and a foul ball he stays alive well he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact that one down the line and it stays fair showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that ab just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield he just kind of rolled over on it a little bit but sometimes those can find a hole and get you enough now here’s jake croninworth swings and misses strike one no balls one strike nobody out runner at first and a foul ball come on here’s the o2 knocks that one away and we’ll do it again bows it back with two strikes fights it off you’ll see another also really good at bat what i like about this guy his bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches that one almost got him these first two hitters really making him work out there already 14 pitches this inning ground ball could be two whit toss the second and that’s two oh man what a smooth double play that was a thing of beauty from start to finish trenton brooks trenton brooks the next up for the padres’s good power not great in the obp department there’s a strike swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher and the inning is over nothing doing there for the friars and they’re down two nothing all set for the start of the inning now it’s the dh salvador perez perez get out of here cease back to work fast for a strike [Music] and that’s outside yeah that’s too high just missed first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count swings through that and it’s a strike out and he’s registered three ks in this one at the plate jack kaggle leone he reached out to walk his first time come on that one’s in there it’s 0 and one curve ball drops in there one out base is empty and one and two i don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count just tried to overthrow that and now two and two [Music] strike three and that’s two in a row stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there and i don’t mean to laugh but that’s a tough one i mean pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch i mean it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it and not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spin on base knock center field and that keeps the inning alive well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win so digging in nick loftton one for one with a single and a run scored so far that one in the dirt and gets away and now a man into scoring position can’t imagine he’s too happy with that one on the mound just one pitch after giving up the single he basically turns it into a double man on second two down down low right through there for a strike [Music] [Applause] [Music] man at second and a foul ball [Applause] swanging a ground ball pandles throws to first third out royals leave one as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead bottom of the inning now it’s elias diaz the catcher alias diaz that’s outside ball [Music] on the ground out to short tosses to first one up one down batting ninth the center fielder tyler wade now batting tyler wade first offering misses badly for ball one [Music] and another ball [Applause] no strike that one pushed to the left and fouled line drive and that should be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second not stopping he’s going for three the relay throw in there safely well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count didn’t smoke that ball but he didn’t have to man when you’re working the ball gap to gap there’s so much open space out there so i think that knock is all about his approach and that willingness to just let the ball get deep on it [Applause] so man aboard one down and it’s tatis at the plate he’s 0 for one yeah the pitch is in for a strike 0 and one fernando tatis jr signed by the white socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the james shields trade in june of 2016 in the dirt nice job behind the plate wade stands at third with one gone in the inning san diego base hit and a run comes in picks himself up an rbi i could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league just a nice line drive into center field and now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases luis aas getting ready to hit he’s 0 for one and that one just misses a ball and no strikes tying run is at first here in the last half of the third [Applause] tatis runs pitch in for a strike safe at second with a stolen base singi he definitely showed off the wheels there yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed one out and a runner at second and that misses two balls in a strike two balls one strike [Applause] just off the inside edge you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one fouls one away and now three and two [Applause] struck him out looking well even if you don’t feel great about it you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation you got the tying run out there in scoring position just put the ball in play maybe something good will happen it just didn’t look like he understood the situation manny machado up to the plate one for one with a single so far and the first pitch misses for ball one [Applause] here’s machado with a swing that one well hit deep left field and it marks the wall tying run is in to score from second not in time it’s a double well there you go the rbi machine another clutch run scoring at back yeah he’s been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself so runner at second two down sheets the next to hit 0 for one with a fly out to center and that’s outside and it’s one and0 [Music] [Applause] one ball one strike [Applause] just missed [Applause] ground ball right side kaggle leone tosses to the per covering the bag that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand they get two runs on three hits no errors and one left on to inning number four we are tied 2-2 and we’re back john shambi with chris singleton and set to lead off the fourth kyle isbel just missed well after scoring runs this is where you’re looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats lifted in the air down the left side and it falls and that turns the lineup over that’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shorts stop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough but right there it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for the base hit next to hit jonathan india first pitch misses all tied up top half of inning number four [Applause] the next pitch misses two and one way inside ruer takes off cut on and miss throw to second save and the go-ahead run is now in scoring position runner at second nobody out that’s a good at bat right there he was down early in that plate appearance works the walk second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play the game plan that he’s sticking to he’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there [Applause] whit the next to hit takes outside i’ve gotten to call some incredible nlds games here at petco park between the padres’s and their fierce rivals the la dodgers nldds game four here in 22 when the padres’s knocked off la and then game four in 2024 when the dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the world series one of the great fan environments in baseball here’s a 1-1 just missed [Music] that’s in there two and two now [Applause] [Applause] got him looking and that is a big first down that big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call i think he got a little bit of favor on the mound no question about it it’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that and i’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today mike el garcia steps in for the royals one for two first pitch doesn’t find the zone 10 [Applause] that one is upstairs up and in and it’s three and0 that was a good pitch there billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout [Applause] and there’s the automatic three balls one strike [Applause] big boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast ball two on one out swaging a drive deep left field that one carrying and it’s gone into the lower basket of the western metal building his ninth homer of the year and they jump ahead in the fourth it’s 52 that’s a fun way to take the lead just hit one out of the park so singy this is a little bit of a surprise a guy known for line drives hits one over the fence well if you’re a little too early you’ll get some elevation in the ball to get out of the ballpark for him it’s kind of a mistake but you know what when you have such a good approach every now and then you’re going to run into one and the padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move dylan ce done for the day and this is one he’d like to forget back with a new arm after this now pitching for now on the bump steven kick he’s been so good against lefties steven left [Applause] now it’ll be the cleanup hitter for the royals vinnie pasquantino [Applause] just missed you know the first manager to ever win a game here at petco park was tony gwyn yes tony gwyn they had a college baseball tournament here in march 2004 and tony managed san diego state to a win and another ball still only one out here in the inning just missed line to second snagged on the bounce croninworth throws on to first two gone now now batting the designated hitter salvador perez salvi steps into the box now perez goes 6′ 3 in 255 lbs and he was born in venezuela and first offering is fouled off [Applause] and he grounds one back up the middle sends it to first and they get perez for the out and that is the inning royals grab three on this homer it’s now 52 bottom four now it’s the short stop xander bogart the short stop xander bogart swings and misses 0 and one no balls one strike on the ground to short oh great stop over to first got him nice play great cat-like reflexes right there lays out knocks the ball down and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the dive and man put this guy on the mound here’s the second base jake croninworth 0 for one so far that misses the zone and that is ball one and that one fouled off well i think the key i mean if he can get through one more inning anything after that a hitter or two is bonus but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line outside and that’s ball two the padres’s trailing by three we’re here in the bottom of the fourth that’s in there and that skips into the dirt [Applause] outside and that is ball four his ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one man at first with one gone trenton brooks the next up for the padres’s that’s off the mark ball one and that one is in for a strike croninworth leads off first with one away one ball two strikes [Music] got him looking that’s a strike out well just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there and i don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything i just think he was flat out frozen did not expect that location in my opinion diaz in the box now no balls in a strike [Music] that’s down and in oh too curve right there hitter kind of expects that and good job of just showing that confidence and trying to get back into this count that one a little bit high the count now two and two really good take especially with two strikes next one just misses and now it’s three and two 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch so now two on and two outs not what he wanted to do there boo that keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit first and second two outs tyler wade the next up for the padres’s one for one he tripled in his first trip swinging a foul straight back two aboard two outs that’s off the inside corner and a count even one and one two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them next offering is fouled back good eye in that spot two on two outs got him looking that k is his third of the game padres’s leave a pair and the deficit remains 52 we go to the top of the fifth so up now for kansas city jack kaggle the first baseman jack kaggleó and first off is fouled off well these royals really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one it’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so i’d say mission accomplished got him swinging now it the catcher now the catcher up to hit freddy fine [Music] straight on the inside corner base is empty one away and we’re in the top of the fifth [Music] that catches the top part of the zone and it’s 0 and two well he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole he’s going to have to battle hope he gets a mistake foul ball it stays nothing and two that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was down to the dirt swing and a miss diaz onto first got him two gone after the strikeout now back here’s the left fielder nick loftton loftton pitch misses there and that’s ball one swings here and blasts one left field that’s back and that one is gone an absolute smash to left and they add on it’s 62 that’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure well not every home run is a majestic blast off the bat and even though he hit it pretty well it was anything but a sure thing to get out but today the conditions were right he got just enough of it and i think the backspin really helped that thing carry it kyle isbel digs in now and there’s a ball and the one hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul [Applause] isel checks his swing appeal down to third and freddy ferguson says he went around [Music] fouls it off still one and two [Applause] and that’s in the dirt spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another [Applause] lifted in the air right field tatis and makes the grab and that is that the royals get a run in the inning on this solo homer now a 62 ball game you’re watching major league baseball on the show we head to the bottom of the fifth and the batter will be fernando tatis jr junior and a good fast ball to start him off that’s strike one next offering is fouled back ball one ball two strikes next pitch inside two and two full count and they’ll do it again w to right field way back gone he’ll touch them all his 14th of the year and they close the gap it’s 63 [Applause] that’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched taking that outside fast and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark you want to follow that type of approach and now luis aas both two in this one [Applause] swing in a liner base hit out into right center field the third baseman number 13 and now it’s banny machado macho he’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport how difficult is that to do well just look at the back of my bubblegum card you’ll see how hard it is these guys are great man they have the ability to look out there but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch those that can really sharpen things on the outer half those are the ones that become elite right through there for a strike bullpen action for the royals michael laorenzan getting loose out there clark getting loose as well [Music] [Applause] lifted in the air out to left loftton hauls it in for the out good pitch he just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay close gavin sheets now the left fielder gavin sheets [Applause] popped up to the left into foul ground has room and he makes the catch the batter number two shortstop xander bogart and here is xander bogarts [Applause] little bit high ball one a rise the runner at first with two gone [Applause] swing and a line drive that’s a base hit into right field and that’ll put runners at the corners with two away anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there now it’s the second baseman jake croninworth swing at a ball popped up with and that will end the inning but not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast it’s now 63 it’s major league baseball and it’s on the show back here in san diego now here is jonathan india india kick back to work inside and it’s one and0 in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone swings through that one for strike two this guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone if you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt outside low two balls two strikes swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center wade makes the grab one down the batter number seven short stop bobby wit so next bobby wit jr sing you talk about a guy that has all the skills the range is really good but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays and that one cutting but missing down low [Music] and now two and nothing and because of that big power arm he’s able to play a little bit deeper make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner that’s impressive one down base is empty foul ball instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in outside and that is ball four you get a walk and you get a walk everyone gets a walk basement mike and to the plate for kansas city mikel garcia he really made his presence felt back in the fourth inning of this one singy absolutely three-run blast and a shot of energy for his teammates everyone in that dugout was pretty fired up now moved to first with dives back in but they got him i think the base runner was trying to catch him off guard perhaps looking to steal right away and wasn’t ready to get back to first nice pickoff move by the pitcher [Applause] and that is downstairs and that’s ball one two down nobody on and we’re the top half of the sixth liner to second and picked on the hop croninworth throws on the first third out and that ends the frame nothing doing for the offense that time 789 do up in the home half of the inning it’s the royals six and the padres’s three now pitching forward new pitcher on now michael lorenz left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year so this seems like a calculated move so digging in trenton for the padres the first baseman trenton brooks and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike man i mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was pulled hard but it’s a foul ball that one inside look out ground ball up the middle with gets it to first leadoff man retired in the sixth the catcher number 17 alias diaz here’s elias diaz that one close rule the ball one and0 good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone the padres’s trailing by three here in the bottom of the sixth check swing did he go yes he did one ball two strikes that’s foul off to the right side keeps the ab going the next offering misses two and two and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again keeps the atbat going with a foul ball eighth pitch of the at coming up swing and a line drive and a base hit out of the left center field so he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher the center fielder number 14 tyler wade the next up for the padres’s wade really thriving with the bat this season here at home [Applause] now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 don’t play situation here he’s been working up in the zone typically you look for guys to get that ground ball see if he adjusts on this next pitch misses down one and two excellent arm action on that two strike change up just missed man he wanted that call on the ground two ball off balance feed there’s one to first not in time great effort there now batting the right fielder tatis back to the top of the lineup now it’s fernando tatiz jr he’s already homerred here in this one sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit they stop the lead runner at second now two on with two outs and his hot hitting continues they kept him in the yard that time but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy stepping in for san diego luis arazz there’s the strike [Music] [Applause] two outs and that’s outside one-1 [Applause] this one lifted in the air left field and that is the inning two left on seventh inning coming up it’s the royals six and the padres’s three now pitching welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound adrien morome definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes and now the right fielder vinnie pasquantino you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher and what you tell yourself is i want to stay square to the plate try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head fills up the zone forces contact so not a huge strikeout guy but he’s going to make the hitters beat him doesn’t issue a lot of walks so the pressure is really on the batter to make something happen and although you like the fact that you know guy throws strikes guy gets contact and not always great contact the fact that when you have runners on if that ball’s in play there’s still a good chance that a run gets pushed across whether it’s earned or not now that salvador perez steps in for the royals one for three command in the zone is such a crucial part of it right you know it’s not just throwing strikes but it’s throwing quality strikes having quality misses as well what’s a quality miss missing just off the plate rather than over the plate and that one hit 97 on the gun no ball two strikes gets a piece and stays alive that one missed that missed by a lot ball two towards first and he takes it himself for the out now batting the first baseman jack kaggle leone two down base is empty the batter now jack kaggle leone a walk and a pair of strikeouts first pitch not close there’s the strike [Applause] and a foul ball he stays alive swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat royals bats are quiet there but they still lead it 6-3 [Music] now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh lucas well you see the ra very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story but he’s been really good so far this year 345 do up for the home team here’s manny machado manny machado let’s go swinging a ball hammered left field that one back there can they hold him at second maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback not in time that’s a leadoff double [Applause] runner in scoring position no outs and here is gavin sheets 0 for three in this one close but called a ball and that is ball one no outs runner on second that one fouled off if you’re going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the leadoff man on everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say “i’m just going to keep the line moving.” don’t try to do too much liner snagged at first that at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it he hit the ball hard doesn’t always work out in your favor sometimes a defender is there to make a play and a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in xander bogarts a strike right through there that one in triple digits man at second that one in there across the letters just a cement mixer slider right there it’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it swinging a miss that one in the dirt ow two away now after the drop third strike nice job behind the plate there made quick work of him right there sigy i know that’s the kind of bat maybe leaves a lot of fans wondering what was he doing up there right yeah and i get that i mean you take two straight strikes then chase one way out of the zone it’s it’s just not a good at bat it’ll leave you shaking your head as a hitter if not worse but there’s always going to be those trips to the plate where you’re just lost up there and that was one of them for sure and now jake cronin work in the first pitch misses for ball one machado at second with two down next offering is fouled back swing and a miss and 102 on the radar gun activity in the kansas city bullpen carlos estz the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up serpa the power lefty up as well misses and the count now even up well he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count knows the strike zone very well so much so that i think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not [Applause] on the ground and foul ball now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss he’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit try to move it around create just a little bit of illusion at the end ninth pitch of the at bat due next spoils that one and it remains two and two bows that off to the left and will do it again pumping serious gas at 102 on that one so they work around the lead off double eighth inning coming up it’s the royals six and the padres’s three now pitching for welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth number 66 pretty tight game so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here got to do his best to keep the score right where it is digging in city the catcher number 34 freddy perine that misses the zone and that’s ball one [Music] and fires in a fast ball at 95 [Applause] swing and a chopper out to short whips it across and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth now batting left fielder nick nick loftton steps in for the royals he’s already homered in this game [Music] that’s in there and that is strike one base is empty one away and we’re in the top of the eighth next pitch misses outside and it’s a ball and a strike battling here as he fouls it away that misses and the count is even two and two that’s down and in and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now fouled off and they’ll do it again one down base is empty fights it off he’ll see another one hit to right no trouble here puts it away for the out and there’s two down the center fielder number 28 kyle kyle isel now at the plate diego let’s go diego just missed one ball no strikes tapped softly on the ground he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it three up three down for him there last half of the eighth coming up it’s the royals six and the padres’s three now pitching for the back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth anel serp he’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that’s not where you want to be at all so we’ll see how he does here and now the padres padres in striking distance but have some work to do boo it starts with the laidoff man i need a good at bat out of him right here immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter well that’s really the money spot down and away if you can locate that consistently it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up that’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen india over to first and a quick out number one couple of pitches and a quick out the catcher number 17 here’s the catcher elias diaz well it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth that closer’s coming in lefty continues to work but the closer getting loose in the bullpen up the middle with on to first and a couple of quick outs hey man four pitches two outs that is an excellent pace tyler wade and the batter now tyler wade and that’s through there for a strike it’s 0 and one ground ball left side and that’s just fouled on the ground right side he’ll do it himself padres’s go down one two three nothing doing there for the friars and can’t cut into that 6-3 deficit we’re back it’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound shawn reynolds and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year not a lot of hard contact not a lot of hits period back to the top of the order jonathan india steps in for the royals india [Applause] at 96 that pitch is in for a strike bullpen action for the padres’s yuki matsui the young lefty looks to be getting himself ready [Applause] that just misses one and one that’s a ball [Applause] and there’s the strike two balls two strikes [Applause] now it’s three and two [Applause] that one misses so a lead off walk oh very close with the location right there it’s just tough to get rewarded on the call with pitches near the top of the strike zone and here is bobby wit jr [Applause] and a first pitch fast is in for a strike there it was a high velocity fastball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust it reynolds throws the first and he’s back in on a dive [Applause] swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands [Applause] misses and it’s one and two really nice slider right there sweeping across the dish but just couldn’t hang the edge [Applause] pitch misses outside it’s two and two [Applause] and a swing and a miss down on strikes and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there [Applause] he swings and fouls one off might want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the cilo [Applause] there’s a 1-1 had a breaking ball misses outside [Applause] to the right side offbalance feed there’s one what a double play that was inning over no runs no hits no errors to the bottom of the ninth we go top of the order do up it’s the royals six and the padres’s three we’re back and on the mound is the closer carlos estz and as relievers go he’s not a big strikeout guy tries to force weak contact so command and execution are huge for him [Applause] tatis leading things off and takes a strike [Applause] now one and one [Applause] [Applause] and tatis able to stay alive [Applause] and a swing and a miss one out well the first batter it’s always a big one for the closer you get that punch out you get settled in you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that you know you’re going to wrap this thing up [Applause] arrives batting with one down takes the strike well so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days you would think that hitters have made the adjustment but i don’t know if you ever get used to it just oh that got him he seems to have lost a little bit of focus on executing that pitch right there not staying through the target clearly not the release point [Applause] fought off foul [Music] [Applause] and he’ll one right through there for a strike absolutely frozen on that heater right down the middle and that’s a pitch you’re just not getting back now he’s in a tough spot especially after falling behind on a good first pitch caught him looking for the k well i think that’s a case of overthinking right there got three straight fast balls looking in the o2 count just to pour it back last chance for the padres’s next for the padres’s gavin sheets in there at the knees arise leads off first with two down to the inning [Applause] highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side [Applause] estz is just one strike away that one just misses one and two to count that turns out to be a really good take right there but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder [Applause] just misses two balls two strikes he’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here i love it and it remains two and two [Applause] two outs full count pressure mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle he’s got to find the strike zone [Applause] in the air left field down the line and it gets into the seats [Applause] got him and that’s the ball game when you win five in a row the confidence just goes to another level and you start to gain this momentum and you think that you’re never going to lose a game again because things are clicking up and down the lineup pitchers are pitching the team is making the plays defensively this is the kind of feeling it’s not going to last all season long but you want to ride it as long as you possibly can perhaps push it up to double digits 6-3 our final score for chris singleton and our entire crew i’m john shi saying so long what the heat
