MATT DUCHENE SIGNS 4-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH STARS | DLLS STARS EMERGENCY POD

heat [Music] heat [Music] do the music the Stars Emergency Pod brought to you by Budlight and by Happiest Hour and this is going to be a quick one because we have a show coming up at 1:00 Central time craig Lewick Sam Nestler Owen Newkerk Elijah Smith is our producer for this impromptu emergency pod matt Duchain has signed a 4-year contract extension with the Dallas Stars $18 million a $4.5 million AAV and let’s go right to it guys instant reaction to the Stars tying up their number two center for the next four years uh me personally I would say good for Matt it tells me there’s something else in the works uh that kind of money um going to have to probably say goodbye to a current player and uh we’ll talk about this a lot in our show but Sam I get the feeling that Matt Dumba’s contract isn’t the only one that they’ll have to make a move if they want to put in the rest of the pieces of this roster yeah we we know that they were already tight i think this puts them with like $50,000 or something crazy to the cap um or 500,000 whatever it is but the very tight to the cap as they already threw up that comma um yeah yeah sorry about that um but the you know the thing you’re right it’s not just Dumba we’re talking now maybe a Labouchkin Mason Marchman comes back into the conversation i don’t think the Jason Robertson thing is going to come back into play but something’s got to happen here it surprised me a little bit as I was just talking to you before we started this show i I clearly I thought the value was less but from what we’re understanding and what we’ve heard from from our guy Sean a little bit it it it maybe wasn’t and uh as Led said this is great for Matt Duchain i mean he’s getting a four-year extension gives him the security he wants he’s getting a good deal he’s got three million sam give us the breakdown yeah so it it’s uh year one is a three million base with a three million signing bonus year two 1.8 with a 3 million signing bonus and then year three and four uh 3.6 million base and then uh one and two no move clause and three and four is a five team approved trade list so uh the crazy part is what is he 34 so we’re talking that is contracts expiring around 37 38 so those last two years we start to get in the buyout conversation all that but instant reaction is good for Matthew Shane as Lud said they’re going to have to make some room now and I I thought the playoff stuff with him was going to lower his value a little bit but clearly not hey Luds when you hear the breakdown the money the buyout stuff whatever for the moment to me the the two things that really stand out are uh full no move for the next two years that gives him security knowing with his young family he’s not going to have to up and move or get traded until a potential year three or four where he has a five team list that’s pretty limited from a player’s perspective and he said he was looking for more security after two straight one-year deals this is I think exactly what Matt Duchain was looking for yeah yeah I mean I mean it sounds like to me on the surface and I’m you know I’m not that capologist guy and I’m I don’t get into this kind of stuff but it sounds like I got two years guaranteed if I’m Matt Duchain and you know and I think for for Dallas that gives him an out and that takes Matt to 36 years old um he’s been a pretty durable player i you know I think we want to definitely state that because that’s a great point the game that that Duchine plays you know it’s not a physical style but regardless is when you play that kind of game and you’re that kind of a player if you’re an opponent you know your name is usually circled here’s what you do let’s make it difficult on this guy and he’s been able to stay away from a lot of that stuff so for good for him um but you know again I I immediately it wasn’t the the first announcement of a player that I think I was maybe hoping for or expecting again because I’m getting stuck on I know I’m stuck in this whole let’s be harder to play against so but this clearly tells you the kind of game that they’re not going to get away from you know and we’re going to make sure that you know we’ve got players that can play a skilled game and can set people up and put pucks in the net we’re not going to lose that part of our game yes we wanted well this is just me speaking yes we we want to be a little bit more difficult to play against maybe a little bit heavier stronger in front of our own net but as far as the offensive net goes um you need a player like Matt Duchain sam I I love Lud’s opinion about that of the the durability because if you’re worried at all about as he ages we haven’t seen him having those little things that kind of keep him out of the lineup for three or four games here a week here like that and he’s obviously you know a consmate pro we’ve watched him take care of himself and be in fantastic shape so in that regard the the length of the deal and how old he he will be at the end doesn’t seem to be a primary concern of mine this is what he ages like that’s what he ages just like this a big magnum that’s got to be the uh the double bottle right there that’s a big bottle yeah I think I think that’s that’s true true i mean I I don’t have the numbers in front of me but I know he’s played a lot a lot of games in each of his seasons and the one thing he has that that goes with what Lud just said is he’s got that hockey player in him and that’s not always the case with today’s skilled high offensive production guys some of them are a little more uh I’m not going to call him soft but you know what I mean a little a little more touchy that maybe it’s because of what Led said they’re getting marked every game and that’s why they’re out with injuries but I saw Duchain he was going through some things we know he went through what he went through last year at the end of the season in the playoffs this year I saw him taking some pretty big wraps off of his legs and things like that after games so he’s got that hockey player blood in him to push through it and the question now is how much of that playoff stuff is can change right can because the Dallas Stars I’ve said this a ton of times they have plenty of regular season goals on their roster now even more so with Duchain coming back the question is can that translate and I I don’t see why Duchain wouldn’t be a good playoff player i just think Luds has talked about all the time he has that style that he plays that works really well in the 82 games he’s just got to find a way to get that in the playoffs and I’m excited to see if he can do it now for at least one or two more years hey the other thing I would say Sam Owen is that I think the contract and you know the money and all this I I think it really um it tells us another side of it and that that’s what he brings to the leadership group you know in the room off the ice uh with the players with the younger players um I’m I’m my guess would be that he’s the kind of guy that a younger player looks up to and and so when you have that he’s part of that core leadership group and and I just think that obviously we we’ve watched the playoffs and we’ve seen what’s happened in the you know as you get down to the four teams and then the two teams and and if you if you pay attention to things like you can see how important uh leadership is coming to these two teams that were in the finals especially and and is it and is when you when you look at roster construction and this has always been a thing that Jim has talked about and many other NHL GMs it’s the spine right it’s it’s right down the middle of your lineup and of course obviously your goalender well this signing gives Dallas the spine of hints Duchain Johnston and then as you said last week Luds you really like Sam Steel as the fourth center we know he’s capable of playing higher in the lineup but you think this team is a lot deeper when that when Steel is is your 4C well Duchain’s resigning gives him that four center depth yeah and and I’m I’m thinking you know you’ve got again you talk about hints so you’re you’re getting pretty solid there and you’re you’re rolling it back right but but when I when you bring up Steel I you’re right i think Steel is a guy that can play up and down the only reason I say when he’s that fourth guy is that means you’ve got a really good one two and three but but I think in your one two and three you’ve got to have someone that’s got a bit of an edge to it too you know not just that one guy i mean you go ahead and look at you know you can it’s so easy to say look at the the guys that won the Stanley Cup but but they’re they’re littered with guys that have that that kind of style and and can play like that so there’s no question for me that I think Sam Steel uh we we’ve seen it i mean we’ve seen where the guy plays we’ve seen that he can play up not only in the middle he can play in the wing too so he’s versatile so that’s what I like i that’s how I like teams built i have a feeling Sam that Jamie Ben is going to come in at a pretty low number i don’t know if it’s going to be league minimum for a veteran with a bunch of performance bonuses it’s going to be that style of contract i don’t know if I’m sitting here being too delusional thinking oh he’s going to sign for like a million and then a whole bunch of really easy performance bonuses that’ll squeeze him in but when you sign Duchaine you sign Ben and as Led said probably means somebody else is going to have to be excised out of the lineup but it seems like it’s going to be harder and harder granland yeah cc almost definitely you’re going to have to go find a way to whether it’s bringing up guys from the AHL or go out and find some bargains in free agency to fill out this roster yeah the Granland one is exactly what I thought as soon as I saw this cuz that’s the tough one i really wanted to see him back i think he brings a ton to this team he plays the style a little bit more uh that LS likes to see he goes to the net a little bit more and he also has that skill and he scores big goals in big moments so that one’s going to be tough but that’s where it comes into the question of they’re going to have to make some decisions if they really want to bring back someone like Granland and obviously Ben they’re going to have to make some moves here and that’s why I keep bringing up like Mason Marchman or some of those guys because that’s that’s the decision they’ll put him in a spot here where he clearly decided that Matt Duchain and we we assume Jaime Ben are the top two priorities of bringing him back i don’t know how you get Grlin in there especially from what is going on right now that you’re hearing that he’s probably going to get some pretty good offers around the league for what he can bring so um the the mixup of lines and everything like that is going to be really interesting because now you have Duchain you have Sean you have two of the three of that Fin line who’s going to be on those wings are we are we getting Robertson is he is he still in the rumors here is Marchman still in the rumors are we going to run back the Marchment Duchane Sean line uh there’s just there are more questions i think now than there were before this happened which is an unusual situation but um Neil’s got his work cut out for him even more so than he did a couple of days ago we’ll break this out in full detail and get into it and more time with our show which is at 1:00 Central time right here on our DLS YouTube channel but Luds I’ve seen almost instantly both ends of the spectrum reaction which is that’s a steal you’re getting a top two center for you know under 5 million you wrap him up long term this is great we’re so happy to keep him there and also what a terrible move it’s handcuffing your roster what are you doing it It’s very polarizing considering how liked Matt Duchain is as a Dallas Star yeah i mean I was probably in that camp when I first heard it to be totally honest with you and and and to and and really it was more about the numbers right it’s about the number more so because but but I will say that I’ve probably gotten more text messages and reactions to the latter of what you said but but again it it just tells you that what what the club believes and identity is of the club and and what they want and how the game has changed but again this is one through 82 and then the other part of the season the important part of the season so um we we’ll see how this whole thing works out but but as you guys have both said this is just the beginning I believe of uh an altering of of what this roster and the identity of the team i’m I don’t think you can roll back the same identity i think you have to add you know another little punch into this into this team and and if maybe it’s only going to be on the back end you know who knows but I mean listen for for Matt Duchain to get basically couple years guaranteed okay well Edmonton signed Trent Frederick to eight years eight years at 4 and a half million I believe it is now he is a kind of winger that goes up and down he’s north south so you tell me a team that that literally got pushed out of the Stanley Cup finals what they’re trying to say about the identity of their team what they need a little bit more of with that let’s wrap this because we are going to do a full show on this and we will get into all the details i I really am interested to ask Luds more about the Frederick Comp and things that that does but we got to save something for our 1:00 show we got to go to D somebody’s got daddy duty that’s what’s going on here well and and we don’t want any right now so we go get ourselves gussied up i got to go take a kid to his strength and conditioning workout let’s do all You want to join him yeah it probably wouldn’t hurt 1:00 today Central time we will do this Stars pod coming up thanks for joining us here in this emergency pod for Lud Sam and for Elijah Men we’ll see you in a little bit [Applause] we all s like the mayor

  1. I don’t completely hate it, although I would have preferred to keep Granlund, but if they can’t move some other guys this pretty much screws the team going forward. Have to move Dumba, Lyubushkin, and Marchment. Robertson likely going to be gone as well to allow for the cap space for the needed roster changes. Otherwise, we are doomed to continue the same failure points as the past and maybe even getting worse if we can’t offload guys like Dumba and Lyubushkin.
