MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jun 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about to get underway on the mound for this one Steven Matz and Singi we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure he’s more calm and settles in He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position Most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of you know tough situations and get his team back in the dugout Next pitch is outside Cubs made Ian Hap a first round pick in 2015 He played at the University of Cincinnati as an infielder played a little bit of outfield but a guy in 2022 What a year Chris both an all-star and a gold glover [Music] Line to right and that’ll be a base hit So a man on base to start the inning Good two strike hitting right there Boo A bit of a lost start for some So that was nicely done to beat the odds Just a cookie down the middle I mean those are the ones you dream about The ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game Right down the middle Not a whole lot of velocity Right on top of it to first and he breaks for second Well this is a play that you’ve got to make The pitcher steps off as the runner leaves early Make the throws put the tag on the runner and execute I guess you tip your cap to the base runner on that one Really good job of getting out of it Here’s Kyle Tucker This one ripped but fouled to the right man at second Tap foul at the plate Yeah And wins that gold glove as a left fielder And it’s a guy that was a pretty good center fielder as well But you know one of the things for him is just being able to be in the same spot every day I think it increases the comfort level and allows that athletic ability to really shine Gorman throws on to first One out in the top of the first Time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup And no doubt a big factor in this series so far Michael Bush Yeah Boo And he’s been just clutch for this team so far in the series Five runs batted in to this point You know guys like him who can just slow the game down quiet the nerves when they’re runners on base or pressure situations they’re as valuable as it gets We’ll see if he keeps making an impact today Seya Suzuki in the box with one away as he takes ball one One [Applause] [Music] Hit hard on the ground to short over to first now Two away as they get a run across So important to really lock in on an at bat like this It seems easy with the infield back but you’ve got to make sure you put the ball in play Put it on the ground Brought that run in And next will be the cleanup hitter Pete Crow Armstrong And Singy we already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs First pitch doesn’t find the zone [Applause] Oh [Applause] swing and a high-fly ball in the air left field Nuke Bar moves under it makes the grab and that’ll end the inning But they push across one run one hit no errors and no one left Onto the bottom of the first It’s the Cubs one and the Cardinals coming up back here at Bush Stadium And towing the slab in this one Daniel Palencia Chris it’s a little more common these days but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy Well I hear you about the strikeouts a lot more guys striking out today But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out particularly when you needed a man on third less than two outs situations where yeah maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot I think it’s real critical And he’s got it way inside gets out of the way The pitch to third Bruhan whips it across One gone Bottom half of the first Now we take a check of the St Louis Cardinal lineup Finding themselves down a run early They’d like to punch back here with a run of their own Absolutely Boo But I don’t expect them to change their approach because of that run They still want to put together strong at bats Be patient out there and get a feel for this starting pitcher So digging in Mason Win Definitely scuffling at the dish lately Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month And that one pulled foul One down Base is empty Swinging a miss And it’s nothing in two Two strikes caught it looking for the K Two down base is empty Alec Burlson digs in now That one’s upstairs Ball one One ball No straight Not even close there And the count is 2 and 0 That was absolute gas Triple digits on the gun It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by And a strike right through there That one in triple digits close but called a ball Three and one Looks like he thinks that should have been a strike at the top of the zone but doesn’t seem to be too upset That’s just a case where I think he’s trying to get a better feel for the umpire strike zone and what he’s going to be calling That’s just a part of pitching The right-hander gives up the two out walk One of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best That is if you are the offensive side of it Wilson Contreras in the box here lets that one go for a ball Swings through that I guess you throw it that hard you can get away with locations like that right down the middle But I still think it’s a dangerous pitch Don’t want to do it again [Music] And a ground ball to first He takes it himself to the bag And that’ll do it The Cards leave one They trail here one- nothing Back here in St Louis Swanson digs in Swanson former first round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks Vanderbilt player in college college World Series player all that good stuff But really coming into his own gets the call Strike one man I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was Pitch misses and now it’s even one and one Larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one Pretty good strike zone Well reviewed by those we talked to around the league Yeah he’s an umpire He doesn’t get a lot of looks from players Maybe here and there once in a while but he’s appreciated back there The one-1 is fouled off What about some non nos Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school right Yeah Even in the minor leagues you’ll learn quickly You call the Empire blue You better learn his name And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player Now at the plate Michael Bush [Applause] and first offering is fouled off As the game has moved along we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four umpires nicknames hometowns and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit That’s great Strike three and that’s two in a row Well I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there He got the change up and still late on it You rarely see that It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up I mean if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball Carson Kelly in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike Two out Base is empty Outside low and it’s a ball and a strike Let’s go He swings and fouls one off Swings and misses and he strikes out the side here in the second Impeccable command in that one Three batters three strikeouts That’s electric stuff out there on the mound back in St Louis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second So now it’s Dolan Aronado Valencia back to work That one missed [Applause] That’s outside Two and one Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there Started on the edge of the plate with the spin You know it’s going to finish well off the plate That’s the ball [Music] Ripped on the ground to second in time to Bush One up one down Batting six second baseman Nolan Here’s Nolan Gorman Gorman [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike One strike One out Base is empty Comes up empty This guy’s got such a good sinker As a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone If you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt Swing And this one’s bounced to the ground And that quickly two away Batting seven left fielder Lars Nbar Lars Nbar Next up for the Cardinals Come on Ball one and a pitch inside He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit Mission accomplished Rip to right Pulls up on it and that’s a base hit These guys today are so great with handling velocity They’re seeing high speeds day after day and a nice job of turning that one around Here’s the catcher Pedro P Pedro P [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one One ball No strike Right through there for a strike One ball One strike Tying run is at first Bottom half of inning number two Swanging a grounder Foul first base side They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away [Applause] That’s outside Full count now Great RBI spot here Just got to stay focused on the pitch The runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it on the ground to the left and it stays there And that’ll put runners at the corners with two away Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that There’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield that’s just so satisfying as a hitter It’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there So two outs with runners on the corners Stepping in Victor Scott He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors That one a little bit high And that is ball one Two on two outs [Applause] This one lifted in the air left field makes the grab and that will end the inning So the Cards strand a couple They’re down one- nothing Back here in St Louis here’s Nicoer He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases Chris her getting the start at second 27 years old A former first round pick back in 2018 And that one sliced foul ripped to right Base hit in So a runner aboard to start the inning Everything came together for him That pretty much split the zone down the middle And those are the ones where you got to make them pay And now it’s Vidal Bruhan Get little chopper rolls foul Check swing called strike and it’s 0 and two Runner at first with no outs here swing and a miss Struck him out and an excellent job keeping it right there Well take a look at the three pitch sequence here Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle And right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can do is hope to foul that off So the batting order turns over in half Up to Mats checks over to first and he’s back Horner on the go Pitch in for a strike and safe It’s a stolen base One out and a runner at second We’re here in the top half of inning number three This is a good time to step out of the box take a deep breath reset Couple of change ups Probably won’t see another one here [Applause] on the ground right side Throw to first in time Now batting designated hitter Kyle Tucker So here’s Kyle Tucker now rolled out to second in his first at bat Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one Warner at third with two away [Applause] a strike Missed with a change up Two and two Recognized that change up right out of the hand Just spit on it [Applause] That’s a base hit as a run scores puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI Smash that one through the infield for the knock When it’s hit that hard it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play We’re under first with two away Seiya Suzuki the next to hit and that drops in for a strike [Applause] Two outs Swing at a ball Popped up Gorman He’s there He’s got it And that is that But the RBI single pushes across a run It’s now a two nothing ball game Back after this on the show And we’re back as we go to the last of the third Now it’s the DH Brendan Donovan That one fouled off [Music] And a foul ball And the next pitch is way outside Foul ball left side And he’ll see another And there’s a ball This guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat He just battles up there He doesn’t take a pitch off at all Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away Misses full count Three and two Really good take especially with two strikes line drive base hit right field man aboard on the leadoff single showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB solid swing from start to end on time with everything really good balance nice extension and he made it out front for the line drive knock and here is Mason Win went down looking on three pitches last time Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here And that’s too high Well here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit And hard the order coming up right behind them This is where they need to get going Swang and a miss So hard to touch Be at the top of the zone 99 98 even 97 as pitchers do such a good job of teasing that part of the zone just elevating a little bit It looks good because you see it for a good while as a hitter Looks juicy and by the time you swing it’s almost in the catcher’s mid Right fielder Alec Berles And now the right fielder Alec Burlson walked his first time [Applause] Check swing called strike one And that’s off the inside edge One and one Boo He never moved cuz he never had time to But that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away The 1-1 in the air right side Suzuki has a beat on it Carous it And there’s two down Now batting first baseman Wilson Contrarus Wilson Contrus now up to the plate Grounded out his first time up Check swing Did he go Yes he did One strike [Music] That misses the zone and it’s one and one One strike And that’s a strike man 91 on the slider right there That’s a hard one That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers Come on [Music] Next pitch is outside Well I I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed I mean it could have gone either way but he looked a little shocked for a second there spoils that one and it remains two and two stays alive That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was swing and a ground ball and that one gets through to center field They stop the lead runner at second Now two on with two outs Just a great at bat right there Saw a lot of pitches Diamond on the swing was good Able to shoot the ball up the middle Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked but that’s a good approach paying off Here’s Nolan Aronado Grounded out his first job Right side corner in plenty of time to first and that will end the inning as we go to the top of the fourth Now the Cubs four hitter Pete Crow Armstrong and there’s a foul ball Next offering is downstairs Just missed [Music] on the ground right side Gorman gets it to first Lead off hitter retired in the fourth [Applause] Danby Swanson stands in Went down on strikes his first time through That’s to third Slings to first Ant wants it to set down That’s what a good sinker is designed to do Get a guy to roll over a little bit Hit the ball on the ground Kill some worms while you’re at it Two out Space is empty Michael Bush getting ready to hit 0 for one He struck out swinging last time [Music] Now a screamer into the outfield Makes a nice running catch And that is that Nothing happening there for the Cubs They’re up two nothing [Applause] And welcome back to the ballpark Here’s the second base Nolan Gorman Nolan Gorman and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter He’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes Usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball That one inside and the count even one and one [Music] There’s a high chopper and that’s just fouled Good eye in that spot [Applause] That’s down and in Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball Something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk That one misses So a lead off walk Up next here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pad Daniel Palencia will depart And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today Gave him some length Back with a new arm after this Now pitching for the second will take over here And this is an important part of this game Tight score and still a lot of outs to get So they’re looking for a big outing out of them right here to get some critical outs Now it’s going to be Lars Nbar one for one with a single so far You see the velocity 97 with that fast The Cubs bullpen with some action Ben Brown up and throwing for manager Craig Councel [Applause] in for a strike Oh and two now Don’t play situation here He’s been working up in the zone Typically you look for guys to get that ground ball See if he adjusts on this next pitch [Applause] [Applause] in there Sets him down on strikes That was pretty nasty Oh just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle So I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands Pedro Pah now at the plate A single his first time And that’s in there at the knees for a strike Gorman at first One gone Hit on the ground Might be two The flip to second on Bush It’s a double play Nothing across here this half Onto the top of the fifth we go It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals nothing So out of the paint comes the right-hander Sunny Gray And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year So he’s looking for better right now Giving up more than a hit per inning And now the batter is Carson Kelly He was a strikeout victim his first time Clips the corner That’s strike one Movement in the bullpen Andre Palante the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening That one down the line and it goes just foul [Applause] Swings and miss has struck him out Well that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to But right there he was clearly anxious He was swinging when the ball left the hand Swinging a foul out of play One down Base is empty In there at the knees No balls two strikes upstairs O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat [Music] [Music] And he hits a ground ball right side and that’s a foul ball [Applause] Swanging at a ball popped in the air out to shallow center Two away Now batting third baseman Vidal Bruhan Two down base is empty Vidal Bruhan the next Cub to hit And there’s the strike Oh and one and that is out of play Two down nobody on Here we’re at the top of the fifth [Music] Good job to fight that one off Swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field Scott makes the grab and that is that Back here at Bush Stadium ready to go for the last half of the inning Now up for St Louis Victor Scott singing You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively I mean watching him track balls in the outfield it is beautiful Horton back to work Misses inside Ball one He’s so solid Calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air You just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air [Applause] There’s one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals But he’s a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield And that’s outside and now it’s filled up Three and two Yeah some guys just have instincts right I mean that’s the way it goes We talk about Larry Walker the Hall of Famer and his instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid Back to the leadoff spot in the St Louis lineup And next is the designated hitter Brendan Donovan One for two Remember Mark is a real good defensive outfielder Good instincts not great speed And that one fouled off [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the air out towards right center Suzuki on the move calls it in and there’s one away Are you kidding me Now batting shortstop Mason win Mason win Next up for the Cardinals Go for two in this one Yeah And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night That is true Hit weekly on the ground Bruhan to first and he beats it Everyone’s safe Tremendous stop right there Impressive But just a little tardy on the exchange and with good speed going up the line that cost him Great hustle for the infield hit First and second one out Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals He’s 0 for one Fouled off He was late Runners at first and second with one gone Last half of inning number five [Applause] inside One ball one strike One ball one strike [Applause] Lifted in the air out to left Pat grabs it on the run That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there He’s saved extra bases for sure The pitcher’s his friend He’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch Here comes Wilson Contrarus Right through there for a strike [Music] [Applause] 0 and two now as he swings through it More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach [Applause] Rip towards third bruhan to first in time and that is that So the Cards strand a couple They trail it here Two nothing Top of the sixth inning Here’s the Cubs leadoff man in half And that one hit to first Leadoff man retired in the sixth Now batting designated hitter Kyle Tucker Kyle Tucker aka King Tuck to the plate now Tucker who’s been an allstar and a gold glover And that one just misses a ball and no strikes Tucker in his sixth season 28 years old And they went out and made a trade for him last season And that misses off the outside edge Base is empty one away And we’re the top half of the sixth Yeah there’s the strike And that’s a little bit high And that’s ball three There’s a strike Pretty rare location right there Right down the middle This guy paints the edges I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter One down Base is empty Fights it off He’ll see another 3-2 Swing and a high-fly ball right field Scott makes the grab and there’s two gone [Applause] Now batting right fielder Sea Suzuki Now it’s the right fielder Seiya Suzuki Hit in the air center field Scott makes the grab and that is that offense held in check there We go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots do up It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals nothing Back here in St Now Nolan Aronado Nolan Aronado right through there for a strike You know these cards looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on but it just hasn’t happened for him yet Runners left on base really comes down to timing Can you put together your best at bats in the most important moments That’s a difference maker They’ve stranded a lot of runners on base in this game [Applause] check swing tried to hold up Now an appeal to first and James Kingsley says he won around the batter now Nolan Gorman Second baseman Nolan Gorman There’s a strike ball in this one The offense has sputtered Somebody’s got to find a way to get on keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run Then maybe you get two or three [Music] Not close with that one Going to count one and two [Music] Out towards right center That’s well struck out of here and this place is rocking and they’re on the scoreboard It’s 2-1 That one just sounded different Man it might have been the loudest moment yet Man my ears are ringing I can feel that swing from the boot [Applause] A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really skilled with his mechanics If you fly over with the left shoulder there’s no way you keep that ball fair An outstanding job mechanically He deserves that home run So one out nobody on Lars News up for the Cardinals And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Applause] Next offering is foulback One out base is empty and a run in here in the bottom of the sixth And that’s downstairs and outside [Applause] [Applause] Fights that one away Still one and two I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball Slightly elevated He just having a hard time catching up Out to short Throw to first is in time Good slider inside right there Batter fighting to get there Just rolled over and got the ground ball Pedro Pedro Pah Next up for the Cardinals Fast ball for a strike at 95 No one strike and a slider catches the zone Just a really nice slider down and in there He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement [Applause] and downstairs Now this is in the air down the line Suzuki sizing this one up He’s got it And that is out number three But not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast And this is now a 2-1 ball game You’re dialed into the show Welcome back We’re in the seventh We have a new pitcher on the mound Jojo Romero Well he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him Jojo Romero Well one run game Pete Crow Armstrong digs in now Pete Crow Armstrong and that drops in for a strike Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals Andre Grano the rookie right-hander is getting loose King getting loose as well [Music] edge of the zone for a strike and the count is 0 and two Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count You’re up there at the plate you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down Missed with a change up They’re now two balls and two strikes Fouled off and they’ll do it again That’s off the inside corner and now it’s three and two Two strikes Got him He battled for a long time but it finishes with a strike out You can’t be mad at yourself after anat like that one And now it’s Dansby Swanson [Applause] That misses One and0 And another ball [Music] That one’s in there now Two balls in a strike In today’s game not that many fast ball counts but hitters still in the back of their minds they’re looking for one Two change up call right there Excellent pitch selection to go with Next offering misses They’re down three and one fouled off left side Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at He wants to get his arms extended He likes the ball away from him a little bit Just not able to square it up Battling here as he fouls it away Sit him down Fouled off again and it remains three and two Good battle here About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat Gets a piece there We’ll do it again [Music] [Applause] [Music] One down Base is empty Foul ball and it remains a full count Knocks that one away and will do it again And down on strikes We didn’t make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strike out I guarantee he’s going to check the tape on that last pitch when he gets a chance because he thought it was ball four and he wasn’t wrong It was a close pitch Definitely not an easy ball but especially after a long bat that’ll drive you crazy getting rung up like that And now Michael Bush [Applause] on the ground Gorman throws out of first and the Cubs go one two three So no runs no hits no errors and no one left Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals won Now pitching for the We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Drew Pomeat Well the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game Some of them are just wired different So we’ll see what he’s got here So digging in Victor Scott center fielder Victor Scott the second [Applause] And that one in there at the knees for a strike 0 and one That’s inside [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike Really going after him here All fast balls to get ahead in the count Next one off the plate inside Now two and two [Applause] Swing and a miss Struck him out Tied him up on a fast ball inside A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out Yeah it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter So critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this So a strikeout really puts them on their heels Brendan Donovan will hit next One for three Pitch is in there That’s strike one holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh Swing and a miss And that’s strike two Activity in the bullpen Ben Brown up and throwing for manager Craig Councel He goes down looking Well this is exactly what you’re looking for from your bullpin arm when you roll them out there to start a new inning hold on to a small lead Just such a stabilizing effect to not only get the first two hitters but to strike them out That gives everyone on defense a big boost of confidence Win stands in now looks at that one inside looking to get the tying run on base That one missed [Applause] [Applause] two in one just missed Alec Burlson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here The 3-1 and the tying run is on base Well that right there could end up being a big walk in this game He’s certainly a threat on the bases especially with them looking to tie this thing up And stepping in for the Cardinals Alec Burlson That’s a big run over there at first base He’s got some speed Let’s see if they send it Well with the tying run at first base he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base [Applause] Win leads off first with two down to the inning [Applause] [Music] [Applause] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two [Applause] Ball on there One ball two strike [Applause] on the outside corner got him looking So one left for the Cardinals and they trail it here two to one Now welcome back And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth Andre Gren just trying to keep this one close here And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game Carson Kelly getting ready to hit Carson Kelly in for a strike and it’s 0 and one inside just missed Looks like he was trying to get to the front door with that curve ball It’s definitely a finesse pitch but it backed up a little bit on him and stayed inside [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off [Music] Next offering misses down and away Well he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here too Two He’s already seen the curve ball couple of times in this at bat so might have it timed up and ready for it That one misses And now three and two That’s foul off to the right side Keeps the AB going Gets a piece and stays alive Really great change of speeds He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next That one misses So a leadoff walk Well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall Very gritty Nico her will come up to hit He’s kind of an outlier especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power Late swing foul Yeah his swing is so good It’s in the zone a long time He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits Singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value Absolutely If he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story But yeah if he can put the ball in the gaps or on the fence 100% First and second no outs And next for the Cubs Vidal Bruhan trying to move the runners over Tosses to first And that’s an out on the sacrifice Now batting left fielder Ian Hal Ian Hap the next Cub to hit Golden opportunity right here I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here Pitcher looking for a strikeout or a ground ball hoping to keep that runner at third Here’s a sackfly situation and he’s got to make sure he gets the ball out over the plate and get those arms extended They’re trying to crowd him with the infield in This be a big pickoff if he can push a run across Swinging a foul straight back And a swing and a miss There’s that slider Second and third One away And we’re in the top of the eighth That one almost got him [Applause] The one two goes down looking Big strike out right there And that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit Infield is in So now they can move back give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third now So with second and third occupied they go for the intentional walk Base is now loaded and there’s a force at every base Two outs base is full And up next for Chicago Seiya Suzuki Boo this has been a good one A really good game to this point and huge opportunity with the bases loaded [Applause] That misses and it’s one and0 Home plate umpires try to tighten things up a little bit So they’re all loaded up [Applause] There’s a strike One ball One strike [Applause] Just missed In situations like these the air can get really thin up there at the plate Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down Two outs All three At this point in the game you cannot issue free passes He’s going to have to challenge this hitter Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it Pete Crow Armstrong on deck for the Cubs And that one fouled off [Applause] That one 95 to finish him off Cubs wind up leaving the bases loaded but they still lead it two to one Now pitching for the back now New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth Brad Keller These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close There’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations Well one- run game Here’s Contras now And that gets the inside corner for a strike [Applause] Just missed [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike Swing and a miss Struck him out Couldn’t catch up to the heater Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning Down one any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate Here’s Nolan Aronado 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out That one finds the zone and that is strike one trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning [Applause] in for a strike and the count is 0 and2 count both pitches on the inside part of the plate Hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here This is a good time for something off speed away [Applause] That one way outside and it’s one and two [Applause] Keeps the attack going with a foul ball Fouls it off Still one and two [Applause] Breaking ball misses down and away [Applause] [Applause] One down Base is empty Struck him out looking Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter And I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while Oh you want to be ready to hit the fast ball Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there And up next for St Louis Nolan Gorman He’s already homered in this game This one chopped on the ground but foul Another one Two down Nobody on [Applause] [Music] And a foul ball He stays alive Very solid inning on the mound so far here in the eighth holding on to this narrow lead This is exactly what they were looking for Pitch misses inside now one and two And there’s a ball [Applause] fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts Redbirds down quietly and our score remains 2-1 We’re back It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound John King bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit Classic bullpen move right here So we’ll see how it works out [Music] Well one-run game So now it’s the Cubs hitter in the four hole Pete Crow Armstrong check swing called strike Meanwhile activity in the bullpen Andre Palante up and loosening in the pen Mton warming up as well [Applause] There’s a strike Honest It’s a strike out Well I think he was waiting on the change up right there and he got it It just drifted too far in on him I think that pitch is just a little more out over the plate Probably squares it up but instead he’s going to have to go take a seat Swanson the next to hit takes ball one Crowd locked in right now One-run game here in the ninth down the middle for a strike and a count one and one Well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there Couldn’t pull the trigger That one ripped left field and one hops off the wall should be extra bases safely into second He’s got a double Man those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever Such a good feeling That’s a good sound coming off the bat man And as he connected out front lifted into the outfield That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel That’s a pure stroke One out runner at second Next to hit Michael Bush And there’s the strike They call this batter a gamer because he always seems to perform better when it matters most Who doesn’t want a guy like that on your team One-run game here in the top of the ninth [Applause] That pitch in for a strike and it’s nothing in two Tap back to the mound Two gone Now batting catcher Carson Kelly Carson Kelly the next Cub to hit A walk and a pair of strikeouts It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position Some guys just take it to another level For him right now at the plate It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed Pitch misses inside and that is ball one Blind drive and that’s a base hit out into center field Here’s the throw to the plate It’s off the mark and he scores It’s 3-1 Got the job done to put him up by two Everything was on time and fluid in that swing Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock Those always feel good So here’s her now Fought off foul King 30 years old now and he was a 10th round pick back in 2017 Kelly off of first with two away [Applause] Line drive They get the force and the inning is over but they pick up one run on the RBI single and this is now a 31 ball game You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show Back now and on the mound the closer Nate Pearson A chance at his first save of the year Number 56 Nate Pearson Now up for St Louis Hey look we’ll see how it factors in I just can’t emphasize how much that insurance run in the top of the ninth means I mean just such a big difference mentally when you’re chasing two runs instead of one [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike And that one just missed off the outside edge His understanding of the strike zone Very impressive That was a very close O2 fast ball I just don’t know how you take that Fouled off And they’ll do it again [Applause] Some heat there at 98 miles anph Well that right there is what you want to see out of your closer Come in and close the door Cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game Tell you what that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs And first offering is fouled off [Applause] One The one-1 is fouled off [Applause] Got him looking for the K Cardinals now with just one out remaining This is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer Come in and just destroy all hope First two batters two strikeouts See if he can strike out the side So they’re down to their final out And now the center fielder Victor Scott [Applause] And he lays down a bunt and that goes foul Now that’s smacked to right center That’s a base hit around first Digging for two The throw in Tag Got him And that’s the ball game Well his first save of the season is in the books And that was a nice job of him coming in the game and closing it out He’s off and running now And your final 3-1 The Cubs go home A winner for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show I’m John Shami saying so long
