not hitting for a ton of power as of late but he does have a very keen eye draws his walks and the guy hitting behind him he’s also been on a heater in Josh Naylor so you’re looking for a table setter isn’t the problem i was looking at the offense compared this year to last year it’s about the same they’re in the top five in all the big categories of course they ended up leading in runs pitching very similar to how it was last year near the bottom so certainly the pitching side is where they would need help here’s the 2-2 in the dirt again and the count once again runs full on Edgar Carol because the reality is if if those things were to happen we talked about the improvements fought and Gallon that would be like getting two new starters more or less you acquire a third starter you complement that with Mel Kelly you get a bullpen piece to take the load off of Shelby Miller as that’s going to be strike three called another elevated pitch and now Will Venal has had enough and he comes out of the dugout and now we have an ejection edgar Carol barking on his way out of there with Ron Copa the crew chief and Venable at the moment calmly talking things over there is no gray area the aggravated shoulder on one of those swings by Josh Naylor but you were looking for guys to pick up the slack whether it was towards the bottom of the order or guys that maybe have not been on a bit of a run as they would like it was the latter today with Pav Smith his two no doubt home runs really fueled the offense in this blowout victory he had been missing the power bat for the better part of a month and a half and hadn’t homered um since April until this road trip and he’s found it here so that’s a great sign and they moved him up to the three spot against the righty and he rewarded him he was on base three times four RBI two long balls and I mean his three-run homer was really the one that kind of got Smith out of this game and again minus the potential injuries you could not script a better type of win for the Diamondbacks the offense looked great you look at the pitching side of things Tori used two different pitchers in totality you had starter Eduardo Rodriguez goes six shutout innings you had Anthony Dclifani follow the final three he picked up the save in this one but all in all Rodriguez taking a step forward guys getting a day of rest after a taxing three games against the Colorado Rockies they’re really in a great spot for the remainder of these two and really going into the off day for a critical home stand we’ll worry about that later but now in prime position to hopefully get a sweep we looked at this pocket rockies White Socks Marlins lined up and you got to overwhelmingly win a majority of those games they got two they got one dominant win as Chris just said creates momentum at the front end of a three-game series in which you hope to stack some wins against an inferior team on the other hand they lost two more players to injuries both starting corner infielders gino Suarez left the game in the first inning after getting hit on the hand by a 96 mph fast looked like it caught him maybe on the lower part of the right hand he did stay in the game to run the bases but did not return to the field although he could be seen smiling in the dugout a bit later on in the game so hopefully that’s a good sign of news to come but then it was Josh Naylor who left this game in the fourth inning with shoulder discomfort it looked like maybe he heard it during a swing when he struck out in the second inning he let go of the bat and it went flying and for a split second it looked like he grabbed his shoulder and then winced in the fourth inning when he grounded out to first base so he is considered dayto-day at this point all of this while the Dbacks are still waiting on news regarding other lineup main stays like they’re still waiting on MRI results for Corbin Carroll’s hand could get that news very very soon by the way as they just got it done here today gabby Moreno is on the IIL for several weeks with a hairline fracture in his hand so this team is just bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase being short-handed we’ll see what sort of injury updates we get in the coming days lost in all of this is the incredible baseball game that the Diamondbacks played tonight the offense put a pounding on Shane Smith Chicago’s best starting pitcher this year had his worst outing of the season which by proxy is the worst start of his career he only made it through two innings allowing five earned runs they ran him out of the game very quickly pave Smith deserves his flowers he hit two home runs tonight including a three-run bomb that really created some separation between these two teams his second home run was backto-back with Catel Marte who continues to rake this past week or so three more hits for him here tonight but it was Eduardo Rodriguez who deserves the player of the game honor six scoreless innings just five hits 10 strikeouts he had Chicago’s hitters looking absolutely fooled out there they did have base runners in almost every inning except for I think the first inning was the only one they didn’t but never seemed to do enough to bring one home this was easily best start of the season and honestly best start of his time as an Arizona Diamondback we’ll look at the numbers on that a little bit more closely here in just a few minutes but what an incredible performance from Eduardo Rodriguez it’s unfortunate that it’s going to get buried a little bit behind some of the headlines involving the injuries but what a great sign from E-Rod who you know has been great since returning from the IIL today even better and thanks to the efforts of Anthony Dclifani tossing three innings in relief three shutout innings of his own the Diamondbacks bullpen remains fully stocked and ready to go for tomorrow’s game an awesome situation for the Diamondbacks to be in and their manager has a lot of options available to them moving forward in the next two days with an off day looming on Thursday so great situation there thanks to Dcliffani he gets the save the hard way three full innings of work but hey he was great in this one as well and the Dbacks cruise to a 10 to nothing win their sixth shutout of the season and the biggest margin of victory in a shutout the win in game one of this series but how did it all go down well let’s run through some of the highlights from tonight’s series opener in Chicago starting with the Dbacks jumping out to an early lead in the very first inning with the first two batters already on base cleanup hitter Josh Naylor got the Snakes on the board full count second and third one man down and the pitch from Smith swung on that’s a rip into right field down the line fair ball peromo scores here comes Catel he’ll score as well and in standing at second is Josh Naylor with a two-run double the very next hitter was Au Heno Suarez fresh off being named National League Player of the Week no balls in a strike the pitch from Smith and that hits Suarez on the hand and he is going to be awarded first base he’s holding his hand he’s headed straight towards the dugout and now out comes Tory Lavell and now out comes a trainer and just when the Diamondbacks suffered an injury like this to Corbin Carroll an aspiring all-star and looking like it might have just happened again here to Aueno Suarez suarez stayed in to run the bases but left the game between innings it’s officially a right-hand contusion and X-rays were negative arizona would have to go on without their starting third baseman just more terrible injury news for this team in the next inning the Dbacks got back-to-back walks from José Herrera and Heraldo Peromo which set the table beautifully for their designated hitter Pave Smith as the 10 there’s a swing and a drive deep to right field on its way gone pave Smith a no doubter to right his seventh and he cleans the slate it’s five nothing Diamondbacks yeah but the Dbacks weren’t done there in the top of the fourth catel Marte hit his 14th home run of the season a solo blast to make it six to nothing and that’s when Pave Smith stepped into the batters box for the third time today now the 01 Pave swing sends another high drive out to deep right center field this one’s on its way and it’s gone his second of the ball game
