Is Tre Johnson The Spark That The Charlotte Hornets NEED?!?!

what is going on everyone Trust the Buzz here If you’re new to the channel I make Charlotte Hornets content So if that interest you make sure you go ahead and hit that subscribe button down below if you cannot tell by the thumbnail title of this video In today’s video we’re going to be talking about Trey Johnson the only person I have yet to get to when I’ve been covering the four players that you know the Charlotte Hornets are in the range to get Um now we’re hearing more and more talks about possibly trading down If we trade down I still think Khan would be someone to look at maybe come on Malawat So maybe before the draft I’ll see if I can get uh one of these breakdowns for him out Um he’s an interesting prospect I have no doubt he’ll help the Hornets It’s a matter of where you’re looking for your help to come from I think that you know just to briefly talk about Kaman I do feel like he’s he is a better defensive center than Mark but he may not put up the production that Mark does So it’s just a matter of what you are willing to entertain for that position and what do you see how that fits with you know moving into the future Enough of that We’re talking about Tre Johnson guard out of Texas I think he led the SEC in scoring with 19.9 points a game He joined Brandon Miller as a freshman um to lead the SEC in scoring Or maybe he was just one of the last scorers I don’t know Either way still both freshman both led the SEC in scoring What I like about Trey Johnson so much is the fact that like his how because he’s already a shot maker and I could say the same thing about Khan But what I like about Trey Johnson is that he’s his shot making is way way more dynamic to me There’s a lot more movement There’s a lot more just him creating for himself when there’s nothing else And let me let me be honest like that Texas team was not good as a rookie He was their offense There’s a reason he’s all SEC There’s a reason they let him take as many shots as he did There was some times he put up some crazy crazy shots He almost had to because that team was just anemic offensively and they really needed him to be that firepower Um I think that obviously that’s going to be the biggest thing you’re going to talk about with Trey Johnson is his shooting ability He’s probably one of the better shooting prospects in the last few years And for me as of late he’s all he So like for a while maybe I’ll break down my spreadsheet cuz I have a spreadsheet cuz every day I was pick tracking who I was uh who I wanted the Hornets to get And for a while now has been Trey Johnson The last couple days maybe because we’re close to the draft I’ve been thinking about Ace Bailey in this position And the reason I have them two kind of like fighting off that spot and I’m still leaning more Trey Johnson But the reason I even entertain that at this point is because of the fact that with Trey Johnson there’s still while you know at the end of the day he’s going to be an elite shotmaker There’s still like a whole level to his game and our whole point of our coaching staff right now is to be able to develop players Who do I think could be the most impactful player you know with the proper development And it’s hard to not say Ace because Ace has everything that I’ve complained about for years which is the size the the the potential shooting um the offense Cuz I always talk about how we don’t have anybody of any significant height to to score Um because you even look at Miles and he’s undersized to an extent So it just leaves like kind of that void of a a tall score and Ace definitely fits that mold Um but Trey Johnson also like we know he’s going to give us a shooting which is something that we’ve needed for years and even more so now than ever with our system So that that’s kind of why like I’m still leaning Trey Johnson but I think there’s a lot of things that he needs to develop that I’ve already seen signs of So for example I know a lot of people say his playmaking ain’t quite what really needed to be I don’t ever see Trey Johnson being a league guard You you get the you get Tre Johnson to put the ball in the hoop and he could do that He can make the second read I’ve seen him do it There’s some playmaking juice there You could see just how he is still able to read the defense a little bit make a play I think at times you know you see the ridiculous shots he make and there are times where he’s p you know he’s putting up a shot when he could make the extra pass but more times than not he he is making extra pass You don’t get three assists a game by not passing especially in college So and there’s playmaking there I don’t think I would necessarily use him in the pick and roll He’s really good at just like c kind of catching an off ball and then making that additional pass And there’s times where you know he drives and then maybe finds the open person But I do feel like one thing that is going to limit these rebs rather are the the times where he dribbles himself into a corner the time where he dribbles himself into double coverage the time where he’s like kind of stuck in the base on the baseline Those times he more often than not goes up with the shot So I think rather than saying his playmaking needs help I think he needs to be able to get those handles a little tighter so he could possibly dribble out of those situations even just create some space to then have someone either come over there and he can you know do off ball hand or ball handoff or something like that or just get it out that corner all together I think that that’s where you really see like the struggle because he doesn’t he just goes up with the shot I don’t even think he tries to read the defense I don’t think he tries to make the extra pass Once he’s kind of in those stuck moments he’s putting up the shot So if you allow him to get you know if you help him build some type of ball handling and just fluid fluidity with the ball I think that will open up the the lack of playmaking as some people think they see But other than that I mean like I said he’s here to be a connector I don’t think he’s ever going to be the lead guard I mean of course you want your star player to be able to do that and I think he can in in some spurts but at the end of the day you know you got him to score and I think he can do just that just fine And defensively I know that there’s times where you see like on tape the lack of effort However for me I think that it comes from just being the engine on offense and then you’re a college kid You’re not trying to be there alone You know what I’m saying I think all that goes into it and he has like the energy when he plays the game He’s hype He’s you know pushing his teammates He’s being a vocal leader You don’t do that You don’t There’s There’s not too many people who do that and just play no defense or like I’ve always said if you could be the whole offense yourself then so be it But he won’t be that at first So he will need to be able to play defense And I think that with his intensity with his effort I think that he will find that next level of being a you know at least a neutral defender He has like a 610 wingspan 611 wingspan close to 611 wingspan So he has like the size I do believe I believe in everything about the weight I believe in everything like about saying that he needs to get that size and sturdiness And then will that affect kind of his bounce as far as creating um and on the perimeter I don’t think so I think that you know he may lose a couple moves here and there but I think he gains a a few more You know what I mean So I don’t think he become completely bagless or anything like that Um with adding that size but adding that I think that has him become a good defender I think that’s all you really want at the end of the day is just him being a neutral defender and then you know being able to light it up offensively And I believe he can get there I believe he can get there He has the size He plays with the passion to get there like the defense to me is a lot of is more effort than like technique and you know he didn’t he didn’t they didn’t need him for defense you know what I mean they needed him to do what he did and that that’s that’s just a big reason I like him I think that for these players you got to look into also their situation to an extent like even with Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper how did they win they have the top two you know they have two top 10 guys well that team was terrible ace Bailey was probably the tallest person on the um or at least close to it So I don’t know It’s it’s it’s I think Trey Johnson’s going to be a really good player I’m still kind of on like when I first decided to do this video I was firmly on Trey Johnson but now I’m just kind of iffy only just because of the fact that Ace does answer a lot of the questions that I that I have But Trey Johnson I think that even if you develop him and he may not become the best version of himself there’s still a highly touted shotmaker that can beat this decent defender As opposed with Ace I have no idea I have no idea what that’s what that’s going to look like if he doesn’t hit his you know hit his pure potential or even close to it I mean you could possibly like you know have him just be like a tall catch and shoot guy and have him play weak side defense but I think that there’s still more to his game I I don’t know I don’t know I think Trey Johnson I think just has the higher floor to me and if you do fail you have that chance So now what we’re going to look into is some shooting just I I should have done this with the others but I felt like it would really really matter here Um and this is why to me Trey Johnson is such a great shooting prospect And also I will say this gave me also perspective on how good um Ace Bailey can be with Trey Johnson I think like right here like for example the 31% he was just taking like a lot of these are like illvised shots and even these were ill actually all of these he didn’t he don’t take that many illi shots but there are times where he’s chucking it up and he has like the percentage to make them like as you could tell like he’s still this is only 34% but as you see he’s still.5 above the division one average I think the corners here you know really show out but I do want to point out it’s not like he took many attempts He took 24 attempts on the left and he took 18 uh attempts on the right So it’s he barely even taken 40 altogether So um I think that that you know you can’t look at him oh he’s such an elite you know corner shooter or whatever but you get Trey Johnson I don’t think you’re really looking to put him in the corner It helps that these are good percentages and you think that you know his first few minutes in the NBA first few games or so this is probably where he’ll be delegated I think he could hit it out at a high clip But if you’re thinking about future trajectory you want him to start hitting these And I think that he does I I even though the percentages show you know how how low they could possibly be like even from uh the center top of the top of the key he’s shooting what 2.4% below the national average But I’m telling you you go look at the shots it makes better sense But once again he had to take those shots because of the offense As you look at Khan who someone had better you know better people to set him up better spacing better just offensive flow all together They had a really really wil machine when it you know offensively going through Coopa Flag and even going through Khan at times Got Tyrese Proctor you got Se Tion James You got all these guys to kind of alleviate the other you know in time I think that your numbers look a lot better And Khan is a great shooter Like I think that’s why Khan is probably the second best shooter in this draft I only give the edge to Trey Johnson just because of like the way he makes those shots and that creativity and that juice and that energy that he provides offensively I think I think it’s something we need because we see that without LaMelo the offense becomes very stagnant Even with Brandon Miller in even with Miles Bridges in it becomes stagnant in a way to where that unpredictability that has teams on their feet when they play us as far as like when LaMelo’s healthy I think we still need another element of that I think Trey Johnson brings it a little bit I mean Trey man rather brings it a little bit but I think having that going forward could be you know helpful with Trey Johnson Another thing I would like to say about Trey is that for me the reason I lean like to him over someone like Khan is simply just because of the fact that I like Khan And I think that once I figure out what’s going on here for me between Ace and Trey Khan is still going to be second on my like board Um and honestly I would probably say trading back to get Khan to get those assets depending on what those assets are would probably be like my first move over even drafting one of these guys just because you still get a really good player and you could potentially get Cam Johnson Herb Jones like these guys to help your team progress forward So we’ll see Um it really just depends on the package I’m not for trading just for the sake of trading But anyway u with Trey Johnson he gives us that that to me that hope cuz I think this team is on the verge of possibly we’re trading LaMelo we’re trading Mark even though that should be done anyway but we’re trading these players and you need that kind of base of excitement to keep continue bringing people in and then like someone that can truly develop during that time And I feel as though Khan on a bad team kind of going through the motions I don’t know what that looks like for him not playing meaningful basketball I think he still grows but I think that he doesn’t probably get to touch extra parts of his game as opposed to Trey or even Ace You let them just run rampid if if if this whole blowup scenario happened So I think that I just like the the ability of having them potentially help in both timelines as opposed to like Khan If we were scrapped it’s like “All right now we have Brandon Miller and Khan which I think is very very solid.” I think that builds you a more if if I start with Brandon Miller and Khan if for whatever reason they trade LaMelo I do have a feeling that the team will be good I just don’t know how good at this point you know with Ace or Trey your team could fizzle out or it could be become a really really good team having Brandon Miller play off either of these because I think that there’s ways for Ace and Brandon to be on the floor together I don’t know that that’s just what I think Uh but I think that Khan is just going to be a really really solid pick But Trey Johnson I mean you just don’t have that dynamic shooting from anybody He’s one of the best shooting prospects in the last couple years of the draft Um he makes it efficiently I mean even all things considered with the crazy shots he’s still shooting 40% from three and he was taking some crazy shots Um and and then you look at you know you want him to get inside the paint more I think that’s something I really want to touch on before we get out of here is that his paint touches he doesn’t generate them as much as a guy like VJ Echim who I think is really good at getting into the paint and in a lot of possessions But I will say what one thing I believe is underrated about his paint touches is that a lot of people say he you know he he’s not really efficient which I mean this will tell you like he’s he’s shooting like 36% um non you know non-re paint touches and that’s not good As you can see that’s 5.2% below the division average I think that a lot of that though is just him simply not passing the ball and making the extra read Like I said at that point once he feels like he’s stuck he’s putting it up And I and I feel as though he’s not taking adv you know advised shots here Once you get into the NBA with NBA spacing I think those will maybe hit a little more And then also I believe that you’ll be able to see the the different passing lanes that you can you know you can go through instead of trying to have to throw up the ball Th that’s just my opinion on that I do understand like it’s not like he’s efficient Like I can’t sit here and say he’s not efficient Like he’s efficient I I don’t know I don’t know that if you take away those bad shots and and having him pass out uh will it necessarily but I I do feel as though that is probably the biggest one There’s I can’t guarantee that he’ll all of a sudden start hitting It’s just the idea of it the you know using theory I believe that it should allow him to do that Now will he do that I don’t know But I I feel as though a lot of it was just bad decision making more so than him not being able to finish because at times he’s going to going up against one or two people in the paint and still trying to put the shot up or doing you know what I mean So I feel as though having him just be a little more patient on having him understand you know kind of where his teammates are and having him being able to have those channels to get the ball to those guys I feel as though the the shots won’t be as bad and therefore this this percentage will clean up a little bit I don’t ever know if he’ll get to like VJ Edcom level which I mean even if you look around his paint you know it’s not like the highest in the world but still uh and then Ace has has high and Khan I think that Khan and both Khan and Ace are really good at using their size whether it’s like height whether it’s weight doesn’t matter or they’re just natural frame I think they’re both really good at using their size to to make way at the rim these guys even VJ I think that it just has to he’s very quick so that allows him to get to the rim and then for Trey I think he’s quick as well Not as quick as VJ but I think he’s quick as well I do believe that adding that weight could help him but you could see that he he gets stood up and he kind of just puts up the shot So that that’s just the qualifier I want to give for that But once again that doesn’t necessarily mean that I see the path for it to get better I can’t promise you he’ll get better So if you have reservations about that with Trey Johnson I completely understand But overall like I think Trey Johnson just gives us that that offensive firepower that I believe we’re needing And I know I threw out the the potential of LaMelo being gone but obviously I would want LaMelo to stay if LaMelo stays It still gives him someone that can score It still gives him someone to rely on to to get the ball and and put up shots I think so Like it’s just that a lot of it I feel as though with Trey Johnson is decision- making simply just because of the fact that he was on the team and that’s probably what he was told to do I feel as though at the next level we’ll see it cleaned up a lot and these percentages will look a lot better I don’t you can’t teach this kind of shooting like the way he’s able to put it up from almost anywhere Um a lot of shots like they’re going to go in is just sometimes they don’t and that’s that’s the way of basketball But being able to put up the shots he put up still shooting 40% from the field If I can get you to get a little weight I think everything else will come man I think everything else will be there Like I said I’ve seen some of the playmaking pop I’ve seen his ability to get downhill is just you know finishing fine We can work on that And defense I I truly believe is there Like I believe the defense is there It’s just more so that’s really what they weren’t asking him to do And then on top of that in college you elite uh scorer like this I don’t believe you’re going to try to play too much defense So I that’s one of those things I’m willing to bet on Obviously there are players who they just never play defense So I can’t sit here and say you know that I can guarantee you I just I just feel as though based on everything I’ve seen that he has a chance to become a really good devel uh defender But yeah that’s it Let me know if you have any questions about Trey Johnson Oh I actually I really do quickly want to mention uh someone tagged me in a tweet and I probably I probably can’t find I should have pulled it up But basically they were just talking about how it’s not sustainable about some of Tre John’s movements and they were like a doctor of some kind So they’re able to break down like his muscular movements and his limbs and whatnot and explain like “Okay this isn’t typical of basketball players.” And with that I would like to say for Trey Johnson I agree Like some of his stuff is just seems a little off You definitely once again want him to gain a little gain gain a little weight but I believe getting in the NBA will change a lot of things for him I think that um his what they kind of need him to do will drastically change a little bit So I really can’t go in to say “Oh okay He needs to work on this one thing.” uh because I do feel like his his role with the Hornets will be different Right now you just need him to be an elite ball school uh shooter and play some defense and I think he can do that Everything else will come I think he will have the chances to where he can you know run with the second unit in terms of you know being the lead guy on the second unit I don’t know if he’ll start right away but there are some things like physically I can see that worries people about Trey Johnson He’s a little slender and you know you don’t want him to just be just a shooter But the quickness um his shooting ability I think and he like I said he gets to the rim It’s just a matter of kind of form It’s a matter of decision- making So I just have hope that that will be able to change You definitely also want him to take a little bit of the mid-range a little bit I I will say that I believe that even with VJ Edge I mentioned that VJ Edm kind of has like this 110% thing going where he doesn’t slow down a little bit And there there are times where like this mid-range and even these some of these paint touches they’re open He’s just he’s not taking a second to kind of let the defense kind of slide and and he has like the advantage or or take just stop and pop like he doesn’t he doesn’t do any of that cuz he’s 110% Trey Johnson’s very very similar in that I think that if he slows down a little bit particularly with his his his uh drives I think that that’ll open up some things too especially especially in the mid-range I think that he could take those opportunities because those guys sag off so quickly trying to get to the rim It leaves this middle part open and he’s just not taking advantage of that I mean you see you know 40 40 shots here 63 shots here 44 shots here 24 shots here I think that you know you up that a little bit it looks it looks a lot better and it doesn’t even look bad here But anyway thank you so much for watching Let me know what your thoughts are on Trey Johnson I am still like I said between the two simply just because of the fact that this is like that kind of just hit me about this being a developmental staff and you need to give them players to develop to to so that they can say they had their fair shot So when it’s time for them to go cuz something happened it’s very easy to say we gave you Tajan we gave you Ace Trey you know whoever doesn’t really matter Even BJ to an extent even Khan like I because there’s another level of Khan People think Khan’s just going to be Cory Kisspert They think he’s just going to stand in the No I think Khan has levels that people don’t see Like I think he has some floor general potential Maybe not your leaves floor general but obviously in just certain in certain stretches um he has that off the ball you know three-point shooter He’s a really solid you know being a really really solid three-point shooter shooting 41% from three There’s a lot of stuff like the way he drives he uses his weight the way he plays defense He’s not athletic but he’s he’s he knows how to angle himself to make it difficult for other ball handlers Of course there’s going to be people who are quicker faster stronger that may give him issues But as far as effort and just being able to be a good team defender Khan has that So I think there’s another level to his game to be just like extremely extremely efficient I don’t know if he’ll become this superstar level player but you could take everything he does well now and tweak it a little bit and it just everything just becomes more efficient his movement his you know shooting all of that it just becomes even more efficient And I I believe that while he may not be your top two best players or maybe even top three best players I could see him in in a couple of playoff series you know in his future where he’s your second most important player He may not be your best player but he’s he’s one of your most important players But for VJ and Trey or I’m sorry for rule we have VJ Trey and Ace they have more so like I’m your second best player and I should be your second most important player Ace even has and Trey to an extent have some I am your best player So I do I don’t I don’t know if it’s like me I don’t really know I can explain how I feel but I I just feel as though if this is going to be a developmental staff and that’s what you’re telling me to believe in then I shouldn’t be afraid of the developmental project If I really see the potential there we lost 19 games for a reason Go out swinging Here’s the guy Um and I think that these guys are you know I know I mentioned to John Salon as far as development but these guys are a little further along so you should see like the progress quicker and they should be more impactful I just that’s that’s kind of how that’s almost how I feel And it to me it feels like the right decision I I just don’t know between the two I can’t really figure it out because Ace answers a lot of problems for me that I said his team has but at the same time his floor is just so low and and the stuff that’s going on like with his agent you can call his agent a genius You can call it doesn’t matter It whatever it is And the Hornets in the past have just not been able to handle these situations well So it so it really has nothing to do with Ace It’s just more so how the Hornets have handled this New front office new ownership different but still it it it worries me Um just because I feel like if a team can get Ace to get on track you have a great player Are we the team to do that I would wish I just don’t know Let me know who you want next video we’ll kind of do like we’ll actually be going through and I’ll just be talking about who I actually want Um and then obviously more as news comes as anything happens rumors all that I’ll try to be recording as well But thanks so much for watching and I’ll see you guys next time Peace

Can Tre Johnson be the spark that the Charlotte Hornets need? We know this team is extremely efficient with LaMelo Ball offensively. His on/off numbers tell the story of the team. Without him, the team needs help scoring and Tre Johnson can be that. He can create his own offense while still playing off others. There are questions about his overall game but there is a pathway for him to become one of the best players in the 2025 NBA Draft.

  1. I think Kon is our best pick, worst case he's our solid bench player best case he's a great starter, we need the height, shooting, and decent IQ/playmaking. Plus Charles Lee will instill defense, besides the speed being a negative factor with his game, I look at him as a sure step forward and honestly we need the little improvement rather than potential stars( not saying anyplayer in particular just saying) who most likely will let us down due to overhype. I also think the second round is where we should find our gems or amazing pick ups or simply trade the 2 seconds for another first
