🚨 Cowboys 2025 Roster Breakdown At Defensive Tackle – More Roster Moves Coming & Who Makes The Team?

[Music] welcome back into the Cowboys Report i am Tom Downey we’re taking a look at the defensive tackle room today for the Cowboys look at each player on the roster their role their impact their chance of making the team and I picked defensive tackle second after running backs because I don’t feel great about this room and I think you should strongly consider trying to find some more help here before we go player by player we are in a share battle against all the chat sports uh channels this month we are not doing the greatest uh Steelers Talk is actually ahead of us in like the fifth spot let’s catch them and if you want more videos always share it help us out so let’s catch Steelers Talk by sharing today’s show let’s break down the defensive tackle depth chart and really beyond the first three you can kind of pick and choose your order to an extent there’s Oso Diggizua Mazy Smith Solomon Thomas Jaytoya Perion Winfrey the newest edition replacing the released Justin Rodgers from last week denzel Daxon and Tommy Akimbas so all seven guys we’ll discuss on today’s video let’s begin with easily the best it’s not even a conversation that is Osa Odizua he’s fresh off a massive contract extension he’s not going anywhere for a lot of guys we’ll mention like what it looks like if if they cut him well you’re obviously not going to cut Osua he actually only has a $6.25 million cap hit this year it’s pretty cheap it jumps the next couple of seasons it’s designed to be restructured so it’s it’s cheap this year and then will kind of steadily rise as the Cowboys move forward osa I think some of the underlying metrics like pressure rate QB hits that was better he is coming off a careerhigh in sacks he’s not coming off a careerhigh in tackles for loss he’s obviously a roster lock i think it is perfectly reasonable fair maybe even just outright expected that he’ll be better or at least we hope he’ll be better in a new scheme matt Eberloose really covets the three technique i don’t think it’s an accident the Cowboys hired Ibraflu and went really hard to find a way to retain Oso Udigua on relative to the market less than he could have commanded so first chance for you guys to comment on today’s show how many sacks for Osa Odigizua this season let me know at the pinned comment of today’s show let’s go to the more uncertainties and that begins with Mazy Smith now I want to mention this off the top of the contract he’s not getting cut i’ve seen people speculate that not happening $3.62 million cap at this year it’s actually not that bad for a former first round pick you would lose an additional $2.5 million if you cut him they’re not going to do it what the Cowboys simply need is better play from Mazy Smith we saw more flashes last year the Giants game uh even the Falcons game he played decently there there were moments last year where Mazy looked like a better defensive tackle in particular against the run now he wasn’t asked to do a whole lot of pass rush stuff he’ll do a bit more of that in the Matt Eberflu scheme the Cowboys need a significant step forward for Mazy Smith because if it doesn’t happen this year man you got to wonder if it’s ever going to happen for him the good news unlike last year he gets a healthy off season remember he hasn’t really had a normal one yet last year he was coming off to the shoulder surgery first year he was a rookie you’re you’re kind of overwhelmed with the training process and pre-draft process then you get in it’s different it’s not normal the bad news is again he is learning a new defense did it has defense at Michigan then he had Dan Quinn then he had Mike Zimmer now he’s got Matt Eberflu that’s that’s not easy to do even if you are a defensive tackle it’s like you’re a quarterback learning all new plays there’s more changes he’s facing he hasn’t had a healthy same coordinator stat or coach combination in his entire NFL career so there are concerns here and especially just the depth overall at the one technique spot be honest with me what is your confidence level in Mazy Smith scale it from 1 to 10 in the comments of today’s show over to Solomon Thomas the free agent edition from the New York Football Jets he reunites with defensive line coach Aaron White Cotton for his hometown team $2.72 million cap hit the Cowboys could save under half a million dollars it’s a two-year deal it’s they’re not going to cut him i I would be pretty surprised but that have to be like really really really bad which I I don’t foresee happening thomas has bounced around the NFL the Jets the the Raiders the 49ers to begin his career has flashed at times as a as a three-tech has done some outside defensive end stuff i think the goal expectation which can absolutely be met by the way for Solomon Thomas is to be OSA’s backup you know maybe in some situations they’re both out there at defensive tackle on you know third and 15 they want to let Thomas go rush the passer a little bit he can be a backup three technique and have some rotational duties behind Osa Odigizua i just wouldn’t expect a whole lot more and as we’ll get into even though I like Thomas as a backup he’s not a starter it’s not who he is you’re one OSA injury away knock on wood from having the worst defensive tackle room in the NFL maybe now if you want more Cowboys mission breakdowns we have you covered seventh round pick out of UCLA of note super cheap contract very cutable because there’s no real guaranteed money toya was a fifth sixth round grade for me out of UCLA he’s not going to be a super elite pass rusher though he was much better in a uh pressure of capacity last year for UCLA he’s a big boy on the interior he’s 6’2 342 lbs his role is obvious go plug the run i in general especially at nose guard your nose guard does not play 100% of the snaps you want two sometimes three guys if you want to like cheat and do some situational pass rusher types on reduced packages you’re going to give them maybe 20 snaps a game 25 at most the goal whether it’s this year or down the line is that Jay could contribute as a run stopping rotational piece which might be kind of similar to what they’re hoping for out of their other seventh round pick Tommy Akbas out of Maryland similar contract not much getting paid a little bit less than than Toya same amount of cap savings because the guarantee Monita doesn’t change either this to me is a developmental defensive tackle he did have more TFLs this past season was never super productive as a pass rusher there are I think some intriguing physical traits from an athletic and size perspective he’s 6’3 306 and that size in most cases is a three technique i I don’t Maybe he impresses i hope he does impress don’t get me wrong this strikes me as a developmental piece who isn’t quite ready at this point who maybe would really benefit from a year on the practice squad or if they’re worried about losing him kind of having a red shirt year essentially on the 53man roster but I think again he’s more of a three technique than he is a true one tech now if you want daily Cowboys YouTube videos good news you’ve come to the as a three technique and you know maybe ambas can do some some one technique stuff in certain situations but Winfrey is under 300 lb and I think you’re pushing it to put 306 at noseguard you’re not going to put 290 at noseguard kind of has some Neville Gallammore vibes although fun fact I went back and looked at my draft notes uh the athletic profile was actually kind of similar to Jay Ratliff but that’s the outlier at nosegard i wouldn’t try to hunt those all the time uh he’s had some off-field stuff getting a second chance again he’s fighting for maybe that last defensive tackle spot even more likely a practice squad spot step speaking of practice squad that’s Denzel Dax denzel Daxon who was an undrafted free agent last year out of Illinois is an international player pathway program eligible guy which means he doesn’t count on the 90man roster right now Dallas technically has 91 players he also at least wait it’s on previous years i assume it’s the same gets a free practice squad spart spot for this upcoming season so unless he’s just insanely better than what he’s ever been previously he’ll be on the practice squad this year because that’s you get a freebie makes sense to put him there you’ve also got some guys who I think can kick inside and mostly passing situations marshon Neland who obviously secondyear defensive end out of Western Michigan uh fran pickup Pton Turner can do some inside outs and stuff at his size at like you know third and long you can go put him at DT if you want same with Marshon Neland ernest Brown is on the roster he’ll play a lot in the fourth quarter of the preseason i don’t think he’s a real candidate to to make the Cowboys roster though at all so grade this Cowboys defensive tackle room and I’ve got thoughts on this to come in a second but A B C D or F i look at what the Cowboys have currently constructed in this defense attack room and I go I don’t think you’re good enough i’m not confident in the way that room is currently built i am excited about Oso Odigizu i think he’ll be a a core piece a good piece and one of a few guys the Cowboys have committed long term to i think Solomon Thomas can be a solid backup three technique that noseguard group is dicey we’re doing the exact same thing the Cowboys did last year which is Mazy Smith and the funky bunch mazy Smith seventh round pick or two and you get to August you go “Ah shoot we got to get somebody.” Like I like Jaya this seventh round pick we should adjust our expectations properly i would love to get another big hog molly a fatty only in the middle the issue you run into is it’s not always easy to find those guys so do the Cowboys need another defensive tackle why for yes and for no sound off in the comments of today’s show some top free agents um we’ve mentioned Rayquin Davis before has the size that I liked but he wasn’t very good in Indianapolis there there’s a butt with all these guys does the butt is normally are they actually all that good lynval Joseph was fine last year and if you want to just have a camp not even a camp body just a a guy to absorb some snaps and not be a massive liability maybe Lynval Joseph could be that although he was he’s old man arman Watts Maurice Hurst Cle Davis Taven Bryan Austin Johnson if you know those guys congrats you’re an addict like me i saw someone legitimately mention what about bringing back Jordan Phillips he essentially like quit on the Cowboys so I don’t think that one’s gonna happen again i I saw it as a suggestion i’m like you didn’t pay close enough attention last year i would love to go get a trade option at defensive tackle but good and available as the same and not one or the other is is tough is tough to find some names you can monitor zack Pickkins might be the odd man out in Chicago and maybe more than Javon Dexter or something but he’s kind of more of a three technique brick Martin has been a bust with the Lions but he’s a nose guard jordan Elliot’s got some high draft pedigree the Cowboys always like that shy Tuttle after a bunch of upgrades for Carolina could be a backup noseguard tyler Lacy was overdrafted by Jacksonville but like he’s he’s available with their upgrades like it’s it’s not great these names don’t drastically move the needle but my concern is that again you’ll get into late July August and go “Yeah we need one more guy.” And just like Cowboys roster status and Tom’s Take for each player:
– Osa Odigizhuwa: Fresh off a massive contract extension, the Cowboys need Osa to anchor the IDL. Odigihzuwa is obviously a roster lock and it’s fair to hope he’ll be better in the new scheme
– Mazi Smith: The good news is Smith gets a healthy offseason, but the bad news is he’s learning another new defense
– Solomon Thomas: Thomas can handle some of the backup 3-tech/rotation duties behind Osa
– Jay Toia: At 6-2, 342 pounds, the hope is Toia can contribute as a run stopping rotational piece
– Tommy Akingbesote: At 6-3, 306 pounds, I think Akingbesote fits as a developmental piece who isn’t “ready” quite yet
– Perrion Winfrey: Recently signed from the UFL, Winfrey is getting a 2nd chance in the NFL as a likely 3-tech
– Denzel Daxon: He is International Player Pathway Program eligible, so he doesn’t count on the90-man roster. He also gets a free practice squad spot as part of that, which should be what we expect of him.
