Shams Charania:

Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet intends to sign a two-year, $50 million contract to stay with the franchise, with a player option in 2026-27, sources tell ESPN. Rockets are declining VanVleet's $44.9 million team option and land the new deal with Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.

  1. Damn a $20 million discount in terms of AAV for next season

    What a win for Houston

  2. This team feels so deep, which is a must when looking at the two finals teams this year.

    Next year should be fun!

  3. Rafael Stone does it again man. Ime, Steven adams, KD trade, and now a team friendly contact for FVV. Wonder who the rockets can snag with their cap space now

  4. Jesus fucking Christ Houston is gonna tear the west up. This is insane

  5. Steady Freddy taking discount to help h7s team

    Houston looking dangerous next year

  6. If Jabari turns into what most think he can be, this is a championship team

  7. They can still use their full MLE on a player like Ty Jerome or NAW.

  8. Fair deal

25 mil for a good starting pg, although one that is aging, is a good deal for both parties

It’s a very tradeable contracy, especially next year when he’s a decent expiring

  9. Why is everyone acting like he lost money that was never his to begin with? He didn’t have a player option and I honestly don’t know if there was any other team that would pay him even 2/50

  10. This is likely what happened:

When VanVleet signed in 2023, the original agreement was likely $130M over 4 years. That would’ve been fair value for him at the time.

But the Rockets decided to front load it, because they had plenty of cap space in 2023. They would pay him $40M for each of the first two years, and $25M for each of the last 2 years.

But such a contract is illegal in the NBA. Salaries may not change by more than 5% between years. The Rockets got around this by a handshake agreement.

Instead of $130M over 4 years as agreed, it will be $130M over 3 years with team option on the 3rd year. They agree to terminate the contract after $80M-2yrs, and sign a new contract $50M-2yrs. The total will still be $130M over 4 years.

    And that’s what we’re seeing.

  11. This is a huge W for Houston. Great value for a guy like FVV, and I love the KD/FVV pairing.

  12. Finally, he’ll have the seed money to start his vehicle rental company, Fred’s Van Fleet
