BREAKING NEWS: Seattle Seahawks sign CB Shaquill Griffin
what’s going on everybody how’s it going we got some Seattle Seahawks breaking news right now just about 15 minutes ago we got the word from Jordan Schultz the Seattle Seahawks have found their veteran quarterback for the 2025 season and he is indeed a familiar face we’ve talked at length about the Seahawks possibly needing a veteran outside cornerback to round out their depth and they now have him it is Shaquille Griffin former Seattle Seahawk former Seattle Seahawk third round pick former Seattle Seahawk Pro Bowler in fact uh formerly with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings and Carolina Panthers as well he is now signing with the Seattle Seahawks we don’t have contract details yet it probably won’t be that much money obviously cap space is not really a concern for this Seahawks team right now because they have so much but it affects rollover so it is at least a little bit interesting but whatever the cost is it hasn’t drastically impacted our cap space for 2025 at least so Shaquille Griffin of course was here in Seattle for the first four years of his career was occasionally frustrating as a player but ultimately did end up having a pretty good career here in Seattle signed a big contract with Jacksonville mixed results over there and it seemed like his career was kind of coming to a little bit of a slowdown after that point he spent a little bit of time in Houston and then he spent a little bit of time in Carolina not really doing all that much not really making a big impact on anything and then last year he found salvation in Minnesota with Brian Flores now last year he was a pretty good player i I do want to stress that here i do want to be very clear that I do think he was good last year for the Vikings we’re also talking about a player who is only going to turn 30 in less than a month here so he’s not that old age not really a concern injuries also not a huge concern he’s always battled through injuries throughout his career they make him miss a handful of games here and there like the one year that was really bad of course was 2022 he missed most of the season but there isn’t a lot here that indicates that he’s on the precipice of falling off a cliff especially in a place like Seattle where he probably won’t be asked to play that much he’s not going to be playing 60 snaps a game or probably even like 40 snaps a game maybe 20 it it shouldn’t be a big load unless somebody in front of him gets hurt so the odds of him getting hurt and missing a lot of time is lowered so it’s a perfectly fine signing let me just state that for the record like there’s nothing wrong with the signing of Shaq Griffin we needed a good veteran corner somebody who could play on the outside somebody that would be at least somewhat reliable and Shaq Griffin should be that so the the main concern that I would have here if if it can be considered as such would just be the fact that this guy had been relatively anonymous in the league for a few years like in Jacksonville he was okay and then he got hurt missed most of a season and they let him go then he bounced around the league spent time on two different squads in 2023 Houston and Carolina and then he revived his career in Minnesota again with Brian Flores who I think is one of the bright defensive minds in football right now and I think that a lot of quarterbacks would have looked good on that defense the way it was playing last year they had I think the fourthranked defense in the league and Shaq Griffin was not one of the main reasons why they were that good the main reason why they were that good were you know guys like Danielle Hunter guys like um the other Byron Murphy guys like uh to a certain extent Harrison Smith that’s not to say Shaq Griffin was bad or anything like that i would just be a little bit cautious about assuming that he’s going to be able to replicate what he did last year this year BFF graded him out decently well last year in all relevant categories adequate run defender adequate in coverage overall just adequate he played all 17 games and he played uh if you look at the total 600 snaps if you count the playoffs so 575 before the playoffs let me move my shoulder a little bit so you can see 600 and you can see that a vast majority of his snaps are played as an outside cornerback uh 519 out of 600 snaps were played as a wide corner so that is his role and that is presumably what we’re going to need him to do we don’t need another slot corner because we’ve got enough cooking in that area and if you take a look at the depth chart things kind of fall into place right things kind of fall into place here where you’ve got Woolen and Joby and with Witherspoon as your nickel those are your corners now Joby in the event of Joby not playing very well this year in the event of Joby or I don’t know if it’s Joby or Job sorry but in the event of JJ let’s just call him JJ um not having a season that is replicating his relative success from last year you have Shaq Griffin that can slide in there and play at least some of the snaps to make life a little bit easier now you don’t have to lean on a guy like Zai Alexander who I want to stress I like Zai Alexander as a UDFA prospect but he is a UDFA prospect you got Nehemiah Pritchette as well you don’t have to necessarily bet on him now you have some degree of comfort that a guy like a Shaq Griffin is there in the event of a disappointing um season from one of your starters and of course the disappointment would only really come from one area uh Joby maybe Woolen but I think you’d ride with Woolen almost no matter what and just figure that look if he has bad games here and there you’re just going to ride it out and assume that he’s going to make it up at some point with at least some good games but this really fills out the defense in a way that I think was somewhat necessary i know a lot of people said “We don’t need another corner.” I know there was a lot of push back on the idea of us getting another corner but I think that we needed something to act as a security blanket in the event of Joby just not having a good year because with players like Joby it’s very very delicate right it’s very very um you know a a butterfly flaps his wings and Josh Joby suddenly goes from an adequate starter to a guy who barely belongs in the NFL we’ve seen this before with other Seahawks players right um Josh Jones a uh safety that we had um a couple years ago he would uh kind of bounce back and forth between being an okay player and one of the worst players in the league and you just couldn’t depend on him because he just wasn’t good enough to overcome that inconsistency all right so the defense it’s really uh pretty much come together at this point i think the only thing that I wonder about is nose tackle and if we’re really going to go with Jiren Reed and Jonathan Henkins at nose tackle in a rotation I think that’s fine i think that’s perfectly fine so I think all the pieces are here for this defense to be one of the best in the league and when I say that I do mean like top three now I don’t know if they’ll be top three in actual production that’s going to depend to a certain extent on how good the offense is supplementing the defense but I believe that this defense should be in terms of their ability to actually perform and get things done one of the three best defenses in the league there’s nothing here that concerns me except maybe nose tackle and I I mean I want a good nose tackle i’m disappointed we didn’t do a little bit better this off seasonason there but that is going to be one of the lesser positions in terms of importance let’s just be realistic here like pass rushers are way more important than a nose tackle right cornerbacks are more important than a nose tackle they they just that’s just the way it is so feeling pretty good shaq Griffin welcome back to Seattle had a good season last year let’s hope he can build on it see you guys later dohawks

Nice
Glad they went this route over other options
Good depth piece
We got him cheap too! LOVE it. It's 3-4 million.
Good signing. Cheap and adds decent depth to our secondary
Now go sign clowney and Amari cooper
Danielle Hunter played for the Texans last year
Like this move
Like this! Good depth move!.
Great run defender is the reason why McDonald signed him
This just feels like a slam dunk, especially as our fourth corner.
Nice! Good #3 corner type/depth piece.
Can always use a corner that plays the run.. W
A good run defender was badly needed. Love to see a familiar face!
Versatile. Lots of Defensive possibilities.
Either trade for T'Vondre Sweat or Micah parsons honestly then we’ll have the best defense in this mf
We now have a Shaq and Coby in the fold.
Good tackler but really the 2 INT's and 6 PD's last season saved his butt. Getting his head turned around was always his issue. Shocked that Pete and Spy didn't sign him.
That transition at 3:12 was chefs kiss
Sounds like it took him more than a year to fully recover from his injuries
It is (Joe-b) btw. At least that's how I've heard it said from everyone else.
Hell yeah! He's only 29 too, great depth piece at a very reasonable cost
shaquill griffin is a upgrade way better than josh jobe good signing we should of kept DJ reed he a Superstar player and he better than Tariq woolen John Schneider made a mistake letting DJ reed go
Expired
bad JJ..bad
I expected this. Shaquill is a good player with a positive attitude. He will help provide some veteran leadership in the secondary…🤔
Jobe one syllable
he was garbage 5 years when we traded him
So Reke just trash then?
