MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jun 25, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
live from Bush Stadium in St louis Missouri MLB The Show has action out of the NL Central it’s the Chicago Cubs taking on the St louis Cardinals first pitch coming your way next so just about set now and starting this one Matthew Liberator and Singi we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots i’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure he’s more calm and settles in he’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of you know tough situations and get his team back in the dugout right through there for a strike inside ball two and that misses they’re now three in one three balls one strike fast ball for a strike well it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone what does that mean Top hand better be working for the hitters adjust that side a little bit give yourself a chance to hit in the air left field nuke hauls it in for the Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus danby Swanson well Boog he’s a guy to watch because he capitalizes on the big situations as well as anyone hitting over 350 with runners in scoring position you know what that means That means he’s a key player for this offense because he can really drive them in when the team needs him the most he’s been clutch all year that one ripped duke in a dead spin that skips over the fence so it’s an automatic double that ball exploded off his bat and off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence and it sounded really good too he just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run one out runner at second and up next for Chicago Seya Suzuki well here’s a fun fact for you Boo suzuki is the first Japanese-born player to homer in three consecutive plate appearances in the majors feel free to use that note in your next Cubs broadcast buddy in the air out towards right center burlson makes the grab two down [Applause] batting fourth shortstop dansby Swanson and here comes Dansby Swanson you talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list first pitch misses and you play behind guys and they love having your speed out there defensively one of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them one in one and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either hittingwise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way and this is what this guy does man at second pitch misses the countdown two and two tapper back to the mound slings to first out number three so one hit is all they get now the Cardinals will see what they can do there’s no score back here in St louis and on the hill in this one Ben Brown what should we keep an eye on here Well he’s been a real quality starter for his club been coming into this one what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one bottom of the first now for St louis brendan Donovan ball one there ball one no strikes [Music] and a pitch right down to shoot one ball one strike cold night like tonight last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end trying to find that sweet spot on the bat tell you what you’re going to be trying to catch things out front so off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast ball that misses the zone and now three and one that one misses so a lead off walk maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass and down the short stop mason win definitely scuffling at the dish lately barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month and it finds its way through for a hit throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play that’s a team at bat right there nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep first and second no outs now here is Alec Burlson he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup donovan the lead runner out at second win at first with no outs [Applause] that misses and now it’s even one and one [Applause] squirts away a little bit well done behind the dish swing and a miss well and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that he’s got to get a better pitch to hit got him looking and that is a big first out well big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call i think he got a little bit of favor on the mound no question about it it’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that and I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today here’s Contraras now that one catches the corner for a strike one out runners at first and second next offering is downstairs way to lay off that pitch down [Applause] swing and a miss and a count one and two back to right and it stays there they hold it at third base and now the bases are loaded he went up there and got it with two strikes i’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands i’m going to be aggressive he was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do so nice job right there coming back in that at bat and up next for St louis Lars Nuke golden opportunity right here and the first pitch misses for ball one he’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam [Applause] ground ball left side could be two there’s one and that’s two this team is ready to make a play with the bases loaded excellent job of execution there you turn the double play and the inning is over second inning set to go here’s the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong liberator back to work outside yeah gary Simmons our plate umpire today sort of has a reputation as a pitcher umpire yeah a little bit of a wider zone than most I’d say and a wide zone can be tough to deal with as a hitter cuz you have to start expanding what you’re looking for covering both sides and with the stuff pitchers have today you’re just not going to have a lot of success foul ball still a one and two count outside with a breaking ball come on Matthew and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up [Applause] and down on strikes he didn’t make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strike out and Chris that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base and the defense breeds a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play but that’s how you do it keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy and that one is lifted in the air nuke Bar makes the grab and there’s two gone batting seven second base two down base is empty nico her will come up to hit chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits foul ball there when you look at the elite teams in the game right now there is going to be the slug no question about it but the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss aronado to first in time and that is that cubs are down quietly we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score bottom of the second here’s Nolan Aronado third base no way yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpin perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end late on that fast ball one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter [Music] and a foul ball he stays alive yeah and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true one and two here up the middle swanson fires over to first that’s one out in the bottom of the second batting seventh second baseman nolan here’s Nolan Gorman gorman taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level drilled out towards left center field crow Armstrong moves after it he’s got it then there’s two down every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly and here’s the catcher Pedro Pah swing and a miss as he was late that time on one and there’s a ball nothing nothing here in the bottom of the second that misses now two balls in a strike [Applause] now one missed first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count liner and this could be trouble and that’s going to get into the corner now he’ll turn for second the throw in he’s there it’s a two out double he was all over that one showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game so runner at second two down and here is Victor Scott that one finds the zone it’s 0 and one well they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting come on St outside low and a count even one and one that’s down and in two one that one misses ball three ball out there on the mound he’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over this is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out get out of this inning two outs swinging a ground ball up the middle oh look at the stop what a play inning over making it look easy at the Keystone position definitely worth another look he’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout back here in St louis and here’s the first baseman Justin Turner his next home run will be the 200th in his career it would be pretty cool to see it right here late swing fouled all Turner is an interesting guy to talk hitting with he’s someone that kind of espouses the modern hitting philosophy the whole let the ball travel let the ball get deep for Justin Turner that is beat it with that i want to hit the ball out front i want to hit the ball out in front of the plate that’s what he is trying to do everything came together for him really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws so up next Matt Shaw on the ground the third might be two fires to second for one and they get him easily at first it’s a double play oh man what a smooth double play that was a thing of beauty from start to finish so the batting order turns over in half up to hit and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike two down nobody on sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit runner at first with two away now the number two hitter Kyle Tucker doubled in his first AB at 96 that pitch is in for a strike tucker in his sixth season batting second in today’s lineup and they went out and made a trade for him last season hat leads off first with two down to the inning swinging a miss as he was late he finds himself in a tough situation early just got to try to simplify it take a knock the other way if you can next pitch way upstairs pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there if you’re smart you’ll look for something down in the zone but not too far don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt cut on and lifted in the air Scott and that’s the third out cubs leave one and we are still scoreless as we go to the last of the third and now the DH Brendan Donovan Donovan [Music] line drive and this might be trouble makes the turn and heads for second and he’s there with a leadoff double seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there just a cookie down the middle i mean those are the ones you dream about ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it so the go-ahehead run in scoring position mason win next up for the Cardinals one for one with a single so far and the first pitch misses for ball one well here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hard the order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get going st louis swing and a miss strike one threw that fast right by him slightly elevated that’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder base hit stop sign goes up at third runners at the corners nobody out well that’s a smart decision to hold up with one out and the heart of the order coming up don’t want to run into an out at home plate now it’s the right fielder Alec Burlson struck out looking his first time the kick in the pit runner goes Turner here’s one up next for the Cardinals i think he could have had a better read than that with the infield back and a ball on the ground you’re expected to score if you’re going to go to get thrown out at home plate that’s probably a bad jump by the base runner but an excellent play on defense here comes Wilson Contreras and he’s already singled in this game that one out to right and that’s a foul ball well they say it’s a game of inches and that’s a perfect example right there could have been a big swing in this game if it stayed there [Applause] runners at first and second with one gone here in the last half of the third next offering misses down and away [Applause] [Applause] oh that’s too high [Applause] and now the count filled up three and two [Applause] and they’re all loaded up oh that sets up a really big at bat in this game these are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in so bases loaded with one away here’s the left fielder Lars Nebar he made headed to a double play his first time up this might not seem like a huge deal right now but baseball is a game of moments and what happens here could change everything pitch misses inside ball one still tied at zero last of the third [Applause] swing and a ball lined out towards center drops into the glove runner tagging from third he’ll score on the sack fly on the board first it’s one zip sometimes that can be a little tough to score on it was hit so hard that getting back to the bag the tag takes a little bit of time by the time that outfielder catches it but a really good job of getting that run in from third here’s Nolan Aronado grounded out his first time off oh he doesn’t get the call and that’s ball one looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one it’s coming down pretty good yeah it is and it’s not too bad yet but the field’s not going to be able to hold up if the rain gets any worse than this so keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well and the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit and foul ball [Applause] swings through that two aboard two outs in the air out towards left center half makes the catch and that is the inning two men left stranded but they do push across one on to inning number four it’s the Cardinals one and the Cubs nothing start of the fourth so up now for Chicago sea Suzuki suzuki no no no there’s the secret at the knees for a strike you know these Cubs just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside that one is absolutely belted in one hops off the wall should be extra bases and now the tying run is into scoring position i’m sure he feels really good about that one anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there and now it’s Dansby Swanson grounded out back to the pitcher his first time [Applause] that one’s in there and one and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand [Applause] next offering is down low tying run in scoring position top half of inning number four it really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called this rain is not letting up yeah and if we do get a delay the unfortunate thing is the clock’s going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won’t be able to keep their arms warm forever if it’s a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early now batting center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong pete Crow Armstrong the next Cub to hit he struck out swinging at his first at bat that misses the zone and that’s ball one and another ball [Applause] just missed that was a good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here and ball four to a board pretty easy walk right there last pitch wasn’t even much to think about up next for the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly and now the batter is Carson Kelly fly to left his first time right through there for a strike he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but he can never predict baseball and strike two good pitch right here he’s going to try to make a pitch it’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play suzuki at third pro Armstrong at first one gone lifted in the air right center field and it falls runner from third comes across and it’s an RBI single we’re tied at one now there you go the RBI machine another clutch runscoring at bat yeah he’s been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself two on one out so here’s her now first time up he grounded to third breaking ball misses down and away counts one and0 [Applause] lefty out of the stretch runners at first and third could be some action here on this next pitch couple runners on probably a challenge pitch coming [Applause] two on one out that one’s in there and it’s two and one looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located very top of the strike zone middle away ground ball left side quickly to second for one throw to first but he beat it i promise you they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI that was a possible inning ending double play great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it here’s Turner now one home run shy of 200 for his career [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 turner with just one more homer to reach the 200 career mark you know we usually talk about bigger numbers when it comes to homers but only about 400 major leaguers have ever hit 200 round trippers in their careers he’s putting himself in great company [Applause] and a foul ball so JT is down on strikes so it’s two runs on two hits no errors and a runner left on now to the bottom of the fourth it’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals one and we’re back bottom four now it’s the second baseman Nolan Gorman nolan Gorman swag on belted that one is back and it’s gone and it ties it up it’s 2-2 he only needed one swing to square it up not wasting any time in that bad move aggressive and it paid off [Applause] a breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics if you fly open with the fresh shoulder there’s no way you keep that ball fair an outstanding job mechanically he deserves that home run digging in Pedro Pah you know these Cardinals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one they’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well and that’s in the dirt still relatively early but with a pair of runs already on the board the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game on the ground right side and he can’t come up with it and it’s in time it wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today but they still get the out good fade and sinking action in that change up got that hitter to roll over victor Scott next up for the Cardinals rolled out to second in his first at bat misses outside one and0 a bit behind with that swing it’s strike one i think you’re sitting off speed there ball two [Applause] next offer in there for a strike and the count is two and two one out base is empty hit in the air center field cro Armstrong pulls it down and there’s two gone up next for the Cardinals designated hitter Brendan back to the top of the lineup Brendan Donovan now at the plate [Applause] check swing and he went and it’s one [Applause] and one strike [Applause] so a foul ball makes it one and two this guy at the dish excels in two strike counts got to be careful with him out there on the mound to the right side and that chance handled tosses to first inning over cards draw even on the solo shot two- two game it’s Major League Baseball on the show back here at Bush Stadium top five John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading it off Matt Shaw liberator back to work and there’s a foul ball you know these Cubs doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side the numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning and they’ve only struck out twice so they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball on the outside corner got him looking well I think that’s a case of overthinking right there got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pour it back [Applause] so digging in Ian hat one for two just missed he’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result he’s been able to keep his pitch count low throwing the ball very well right now next offering is in for a strike oh great stop from his backside it’s there and that’s a great play man oh man that ball was absolutely smoked tripledigit exit velocity he dives and I’m just shocked that the ball stayed in his mitt looked like he was going to put a hole in his glove here’s Kyle Tucker check swing no appeal 10 [Music] that’s in there and one and one in the air center field scott makes the play and it’s out number three we’ve hit the halfway point tied two and two ready to go for the last half of the unit and stepping in for the Cardinals mason Win line drive he steps on the bag and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth now batting right fielder Alec Alec Burlson the next to hit bowl for two in this one just missed nope that’s a ball [Music] [Applause] [Music] swing and a base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out single now batting Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate wilson Contrus in the dirt nice job behind the plate there movement in the bullpen cade Horton getting loose out there keller warming up as well [Applause] the kick and the pitch runner goes swing and a miss throw the to second tag out at second well I think that was a hit and run right there when you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put wood on it put it in play that tells you that they had something going but unfortunately it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base really nice job behind the dish way inside gets out of the way this hitter’s looking for a fast ball but I’m not sure he’s going to get one pitcher doesn’t have to challenge him if he feels better about his off speed secondary stuff then stay with it swing and a miss and that’s strike two two strikes way high two down nobody on last half of inning number five up the middle in plenty of time to first and Contrarus is retired that’s the third out inning over nothing doing there for St louis score remains 2-2 all right we go to the top half of inning number six and now the right fielder Seya Suzuki there’s a line drive to left field reaches for it makes the catch sometimes you want to be aggressive early in the at bat it was right there hard line out first pitch of the inning no reward but hey you got to keep swinging it dansby Swanson stands in there’s the strike just missed next pitch is outside [Applause] [Applause] [Music] one down base is empty spoils that one and it remains two and two swung on popped up on the infield gorman two down boy that was a hanging breaking ball right there i think he tried to do a little bit too much sometimes those eyes can get really big i think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up pete Crow Armstrong getting ready to hit he’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors and that’s in for a strike tonight his slider has been really impressive i mean tight spin seems like the hitters aren’t picking it up out of the hand up and in and it’s one and one activity in the bullpen phil Maton appears to be getting loose number 35 also throwing two out space is empty swing and a miss it’s a ball in two strikes well he went inside a couple of times and now outside hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch swings and misses and it’s a three up three down inning nothing doing here this half we go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots do up we are tied 2-2 new pitcher in the game for the Cubs Cade Horton well he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test this looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup kade Horton Lars News in leftielder Nar that one finds the corner strike one moving in the Cubs bullpen drew Pomeratz up and throwing for manager Craig Councel peelbar getting loose as well [Music] there’s the strike 95 of that one quickly down 02 in the count i think you got to choke up a little bit spread out the feet you don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be and that one upstairs ball one [Applause] that misses the zone two and two good job to fight that one off swing and he breaks his back and that’s just foul [Music] line drive base hit so he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB i could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league just a nice line drive into center field so now it’s Dolan Aronado one no in the dirt blocked and the runner holds strike one well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count and that one fouled off with a go ahead run at first here in the bottom of the six [Applause] upstairs ball two still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound he’s already thrown 13 pitches they got him working hard out there [Applause] swings and misses struck him out slider got him for strike three no that slider down and away it’s just kind of a slow death of two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it tell you what sometimes you just have to tip your cap at the plate Nolan Gorman he’s already homerred in this game [Applause] and fouled off [Applause] nuke bar at first one gone [Applause] in the air left field down the line nice grab on the run and there are two down well those can be pretty fun as an outfielder got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down nothing better than that you feel like a wide receiver playing football pedro Pah will hit next that one finds the zone strike one pahes goes 5 feet 11 in 26 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2019 close one doesn’t get the call and that is ball one [Applause] ball two [Applause] and he takes a strike two two good eye in that spot 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch victor Scott in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here cuts and misses it’s a strike out one hit one left we’re through six full we are tied 22 now pitching welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound phil and he’s got a big time breaking ball to continue with hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance now the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly check swing and he went and at strike one’s the count [Applause] inside corner at the knees that’s a strike good fast [Music] on the ground gets to it with a slide the throw and very nicely done for the out just so impressed with the movement on that play footwork was excellent the arm strength was there and of course the most important part was getting the out here’s Nicoer right through there for a strike [Applause] one down base is empty swing and a miss no balls two strikes no balls two strikes out towards right center field burlson on his way over flashes the leather on the run and catch and there are two outs that’s just a really nice catch on the run right there he saved extra bases for sure if the pitcher’s his friend he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch turner in the box again takes the strike they say you win [Applause] two outs swing and a miss and he got him and good work there as he gets a one two three nothing happening there for the Cubs and this game is still tied at two and two and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the seventh and now the center fielder Victor Scott first pitch doesn’t find a zone counts one and open bounce to the right and it goes just foul [Music] and he bunts but that’s a foul ball and now it’s even up two balls two strikes just misses the mark outside the zone really good take especially with two strikes it’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahehead run pretty good spot on the outside but just couldn’t quite clip the zone that’s a stone cold take back to the top of the order and next is the designated hitter Brendan Donovan [Applause] now moved to first and he dives back in safely [Applause] that one ripped could be extra bases coming home safe it’s 32 he has had such a good day today i think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over couple of doubles today for the DH runner [Applause] in scoring position no outs mason win now at the plate first pitch misses [Applause] [Applause] that clips the corner [Music] [Applause] the 1-1 yeah big swing and a miss benny really sells the change up with that arm action chases the fast up the ladder struck him out usually when you see several pitches you’re going to get at least one that you might be able to do something with but they didn’t exactly challenge him in any way right there and really they just used his aggressiveness against him i don’t think he even got a pitch in the zone no that’s a good point Sigy he goes down on strikes but not a single pitch was actually in the strike zone alec Burlson getting ready to hit one for three ripped to first caught he put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard you know line drives don’t always find a hole but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit vo the better off you’re going to be in the long run and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus [Applause] that’s in there man i mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was two outs and one in scoring position [Applause] and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact that one the other way corner sends it to first they limit the damage here cards on the board with this double it’s now a 32 ball game back now as it’ll be a pinch hitter to lead off Michael Bush and he would be the tying run boo so we may see him try to launch one if he gets a good pitch to handle [Applause] mah back to work and there’s a ball and that misses and that’s ball two action in the pen down there brian Helley up and loosening in the pen number 35 the hardthrowing right-hander up as well [Applause] that one misses and it’s 3 and 0 well I would expect in this three-0 count you’re taking all the way see if they’ll walk you looking to get the tying run on base that’s in for a strike [Applause] and the tying run is on base now batting left fielder Ian Hat and next for the Cubs Ian Hat corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases [Applause] yeah the pitch is in for a strike going trying to hold a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth [Applause] swings and misses and it’s nothing at two well the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone so perhaps he’ll come back to it still trying to get that ground ball double play the next offering misses ball one [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive bush on at first nobody out [Applause] this one in the dirt and the runner stays where he is [Applause] in the dirt and it’s three and two on this count runner not known for his speed but I think you got to put him in motion try to avoid a double play here boo and ball four to a board man that’s a tough one to take on the full count but I guess he saw it really well it’s a really nice plate appearance here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen phil Mod out of the game and he leaves in a one-run game new pitcher coming on we’ll be back in a minute now pitching new arm of the mound for the Cardinals jojo Romero these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations and now a very big at bat for Kyle Tucker oh look out here he’s going to come up ready to swing in this situation [Applause] in the first pitch misses for ball one the possible tying and go ahead runs on base nobody out outside low two and 0 working down to the zone to start the at bat looking for that double playground ball yeah back to back sinkers there he’s looking for some weak contact or to get this hitter to roll over now as a hitter you have to be really disciplined don’t look down because you’ll end up chasing the ball down set your sights high maybe you get a mistake inside three balls in a strike this is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game you know that they don’t want to walk you so you’re going to get a pitch to hit you just better not miss it swing and a highf fly ball left field makes the grab and there’s one down throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved now batting right Sea Suzuki high leverage spot and here is Seiya Suzuki fly ball to the outfield for a sack fly soft ground ball to the right side find calling for the intentional walk and that loads up the bases and the force play is now in order oh it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot he’s just too dangerous at the plate right now and there’s a base open so it gives you options defensively to get an out and that is out of play in the infield at the corners don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring puts a bunt down to first and he beats it everyone’s safe as a run scores and up next for Chicago Pete Crow Armstrong a walk and a pair of strikeouts yeah that’s fouled off back and forth we go a seessaw battle in the late stages of this one late on that fast ball not sure exactly what he was thinking there good sinker ball pitcher goes with the fast ball in a double play situation when he needs something on the ground not close with that one and the count is one and two [Applause] right through there got it huge strike out there well that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead you had the infield back all you’ve got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run that’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter now I’ll still have a chance but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs so up now for Chicago Carson Kelly boo this has been a good one a really good game to this point and huge opportunity with the bases loaded that one misses ball one well this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter you can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations pitches in for a strike and a count one and one [Applause] there’s the swinging one ball so they’re all loaded up [Applause] swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field and that’s the third out so they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded home half of inning number eight straight ahead all tied up at three apiece now pitching for the back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth drew Pomez he’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out now the left fielder Lars New you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head that one inside and that’s ball one late with the swing there one [Applause] fouled off he was late [Music] [Applause] and that’s downed away [Applause] that misses three and two now nolan Aronado in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here fly ball down the line suzuki sizing this one up brings it in and there’s one away up next for the Cardinals Thursday here’s Nolan Aronado 0 for three in this one that’s outside and that’s ball one it comes bullpen with some action brad Keller up and throwing [Applause] on the ground to third zips it to first and they get Aronado for the out well there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there nice job of the pitcher to bear down make the pitch get the ground ball excellent piece of work nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals he’s already homered here in this one tap foul at the plate two down nobody on here the bottom half of the eighth inning and that’s off the inside edge one and one cut on and missed 96 of that fast ball it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he’s really late right now cut on and miss struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one three red Birds down quietly score remains tied at three now pitching welcome back and here comes the closer Ryan Hley should be a good first match up for him here he’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season they’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up here’s the second base Nicoer second base Nicoer [Applause] pitch misses outside and that is ball one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and he lays down a bunt down the line and it’s fouled [Applause] [Applause] swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and a strike out for the first out here in the night well that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count and as a pitcher it really allows you to start expanding the zone hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout here’s JT at the dish and the first offering is not close [Applause] and that one fouled off all tied up here in the top of the ninth that cuts the corner fights that one away still one and two really great change of speeds he goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next [Applause] just outside two balls two strikes man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s as close as it gets [Applause] to third aronado whips it across and Turner is retired now batting third baseman Michael Bush michael Bush the next come to hit walked his first time helley 30 years old now and he was a fifth round pick back in 2015 there’s the strike so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days you would think that hitters have made the adjustment but I don’t know if you ever get used to it just pumping gas out of the bullpen so hard to play catchup a little out front there as he swings through it the O2 swing and a drive this one is crushed no doubt about it and here in the late stages they have the lead that’ll fire up the dugout his 13th home run of the season and they jump out front it’s 43 that one just sounded different and it might have been the loudest moment yet man my ears are ringing i can feel that swing from the boot [Applause] no matter how this outing ends that pitch is going to haunt him for a while an O2 mistake that’s supposed to be a pitch out of his own he left it in a spot that the hitter could do some damage with and that’s exactly what he did so two away with nobody on and now Ian Hat first pitch doesn’t find the zone one-run game here in the top of the ninth [Applause] ground ball right side and foul ball [Applause] half lays off backto back breaking pitches away you get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn’t want to challenge you so I think the confidence level is raised right here [Applause] and that’s way high and that’s ball three kyle Tucker waiting to hit for the Cubs [Applause] the 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play a game plan that he’s sticking to he’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there mad at first Kyle Tucker the next Cub to hit one for four with a double first pitch misses pat off of first with two away [Applause] that one catches the zone and it’s one and one good pitch to hit on a T up in the zone i think he was looking for something else right there that one kicks away from the catcher and now a man into scoring position intentional walk here with two out they set up a force at any base to end the inning clearly they didn’t want to mess with them right there so I think it makes sense to play the numbers game in this spot seiya Suzuki the next to hit singi he’s got a history of coming through in big spots i know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots that one in triple digits well I think it’s the ability to assess the situation understanding what the pitcher has what he’s trying to get people out on and then being able to use the entire field [Applause] top of the zone for a strike and the count is 0 and two if you’re guy that can only hit to one field then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust but because he’s able to use the entire field that’s why he’s so successful in these situations [Applause] strike him out looking so only one hit in the inning the solo homer and it puts him ahead 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine it’s the Cubs four and the Cardinals three back now and on the mound the closer Daniel Palencia well he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down win so this game has gone to plan more or less let’s see if he can wrap it up here pz stands in now looks at that one inside you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one next offering is in for a strike and a breaking ball misses outside pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there started on the edge of the plate with the spin you know it’s going to finish well off the plate that’s too low three and one well an interesting situation one swing you can tie up the ball game but if you’re patient and work a wall then you bring the gamewinning run to the plate popped up to the left into foul ground he’s under it one away now batting center fielder Victor Scott II he’s two outs away now up for St louis victor Scott well you got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base turn this lineup over so the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off trying to find his way on and it’s just fouled that was close [Applause] and that skips in the dirt a oneun lead and the home team trying to pull it out that one missing inside [Applause] headed down the line and that will drop foul definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open swing and a miss that’s a strike out and they’re down to their last out he’s really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fooled donovan so it’s their last chance in this one brendan Donovan digs in now fought off foul [Music] [Applause] check swing no appeal trying to close out a one-run lead here in the last half of inning number nine late swing fouled to the left valencia is just one strike away hard hit base hit and the tying run is on base that’s tremendous fight from him and I know it’s got the dugout fired up down there down to the last strike and he comes up with a hit to keep the game alive it ain’t over yet so two down mason win will hit next and the first pitch misses for ball one but with the tying run at first base he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on drive it into a gap and score that run from first base [Applause] two outs that one missed typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up a strike right through there that one in triple digits [Applause] and fouled off tying run at first the winning run at the plate [Applause] on the ground right side down the line and it’s fouled [Applause] the 2-2 keeps the attack going with a foul ball [Applause] now kelly has some trouble with it donovan up into scoring position now with two out on the pass ball this is something that’ll happen to him from time to time behind the dish uh the defense is a part of his game he’s trying to improve but right there just couldn’t squeeze it and it cost him so the tying run at second hit to right and that ought to do it he’s got it ball game and the Cubs hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game well you take a tie ball game into the ninth on the road you know that you’ve got some work to do you got to score but then you’ve also got to get three outs in the bottom half of that inning they did just that today very well played ball game get this win on the road everybody’s happy with the W i’m a move
