The Drive: Catching up with DC Shane Bowen | New York Giants

[Music] coach Mo what’s up how we doing round two yeah you doing all right yeah we had so much fun last year we figured let’s do it again huh i hear you i got a different whip though yeah this a little bit bigger welcome this a little bit nicer this is Yeah we got a little more leg room yeah no doubt this is the brand new Cadillac Escalade IQ it’s the first ever all-electric full-sized SUV that Cadillac’s made this is awesome so you get to be one of the first to experience it well listen welcome back year two how’s the second year different than last year yeah just in this phase I think uh just the familiarity right like the guys kind of know me I know them a little bit better obviously being with them a year now terminology all those little things in year one you got to go through and and really translate for them not having to spend as much time with that so we’re able to move forward a little bit quicker in regards to that type of stuff um and again we got new pieces so you always start at ground zero and work your way up but at the same time like all of us knowing each other and the relationships having already been established just makes things go a little bit smoother javon Holland obviously he he’s a new guy for you in the secondary and a dbo what have you seen from those guys and what do you like from them so far first and foremost they’re pros right they’ve done it at a high level they’ve seen it all they’re they’re experienced players um I think just what they bring to that room our unit from a experience standpoint a leadership standpoint um that’s been evident really since day one with both those guys they’re two of the new pieces that are trying to build those relationships with their teammates with their coaches and it takes time but I think we’re on the right track right now yeah and that relationship too with with the younger guys that are coming back for year two as well Newman and Phillips and you know how have you seen that mentorship aspect from those veteran guys really good both those guys have taken dramatic steps i always say between year one and year two there should be as significant of growth as you have in your career newman’s been really good taking on a little bit more of a vocal leadership role as well with Holland back there but you need from your safeties and and I I do I see a lot of growth from Drew just from the all the things even before the balls even snapped the communication the urgency um the understanding of how teams are trying to attack you like you see him gradually learning and and improving his recognition with those types of things all right so we talked about the back end a little bit let’s go to the front you got a really shiny new toy in Abdul Carter how excited are you to have a guy like that with that kind of talent yeah it’s been fun again we got two really good edge guys with Burns and KT and then you add him to the mix it opens up some things for you as a defense coordinator obviously with our staff working to find ways to to be able to get those guys on the field where they can impact the game but just his ability so explosive and then he’s got the athleticism to match usually it’s one or the other with these guys and he’s got both so um it’s been fun to watch as it goes but we got to find ways to to get him on the field so he can impact so now you put him on the field with Tibido with Burns with Dexter do you get excited when you’re thinking about like these third down packages and how we can find a way to get mismatches with all these guys on the field at the same time i do i think I think it’s going to be hard you got four guys out there now if they’re soloed up they can find a way to get to the quarterback so in the middle right we got Bobby O you know Bobb’s got long arms he’s got great range what are you looking for in this year from building off of last year yeah I think uh the length is an asset for sure and just being able to utilize that play in and play out whether it’s getting off blocks whether it’s being in zone coverage and and being able to cover a lot of space which he’s able to do um I think towards the end there before he got hurt you started to see a lot more of that ball production from him so continuing to get that that’s another benefit of the length um the leadership has always been there with him he’s a total pro the guys look to him they listen to him uh the way he works day in and day out when you lose a cog like that in the unit it’s tough to replace yeah yeah he’s he does a lot well coach appreciate the time always fun riding around with you enjoyed it man forward to watching all those turnovers all those sacks and a lot of celebration i appreciate it all right thanks Shane thank you [Music]
