welcome to St louis and Bush Stadium home of the Cardinals since 2006 mlb the show has action out of the NL Central it’s the Chicago Cubs taking on the St louis Cardinals first pitch coming your way next please welcome your St louis Cardinals just about set to go today’s starting pitcher Michael McGrevy and Singi it’s unique these days but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy yeah Boogie he doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out he knows he needs to miss barrels get some soft contact let the defense do work behind him and I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off they’re in line for a quality start we’ll see what he’s got in this one hit in the air left field and there’s one away time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup they’ve had a great year offensively as good an offensive team as you will find they’re deep first and foremost but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team and I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams especially in a big game big series kyle Tucker stands in now and watches strike one just off the outside edge one and one that’s ball two two-1 that’s down and in first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count now on what is inside ball four and I mean oh so close boo if I were him I’d be nibbling around the plate as well i mean this guy’s just capable of hitting pitches outside of the zone and driving them a long way next to hit Seiya Suzuki check swing and he went and one Suzuki in his fourth year 30 years old now and he was born in Japan and that one lifted in the air center field [Applause] and there are two outs batting fourth center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong and now the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong chris it’s been a good year for him having already set a new careerhigh for RBI’s in the season there’s strike well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit swing and a miss as he was out front that time ground ball up the middle that one sizzling on its way through to the outfield and now to a board danby Swanson is going to get a chance to hit right through there for a strike tucker at second cro Armstrong at first two out of the inning and there’s a fly ball deep right field that one back there get out of town he circles the bases home run number 15 on the year and they grab the lead it’s 3 nothing there was a fast ball down the middle i don’t think the hitter recognized the pitch but once he did was quick enough to get it in play with some authority he got that up and out of here base is empty with two away and now the first baseman Michael Bush that’s in there and that’s strike one [Applause] top of the zone and it’s called a strike got to be careful here this is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit and that keeps the inning alive stringing them together that’s three hits in a row he got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point pretty impressive for an 02 count so here’s her now he’s been on fire at the dish lately can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one and first offering is fouled off [Applause] two outs fast ball for a strike 0 and two now [Applause] swing and a miss struck him out ugly cut on the slider for strike three but the biggest swing of the inning comes right here a three-run homer it’s now 3 nothing you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here in St louis and now here’s the starter for the Cubs Jameson Tayion and Singi we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots well what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season so when you consider consistency the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners that’s critical in winning games today especially when teams are depending on the big swing the home run to win ball games swing and a foul out of play oh one down up the middle hole and that one handled not in time an infield knock to start the inning definitely a tough play right there and he had a little trouble on the transfer didn’t seem to be able to get the grip and get rid of it and that made all the difference [Applause] man at first nobody out mason Win next up for the Cardinals it’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month and that one’s a little bit low ball one swing and a miss as he was late that time man he was really tardy on that fast ball a great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball add some velocity to it on the next pitch can’t catch up here’s a high-fly ball out to center crow Armstrong should have it one down batting third now we take a check of the St louis Cardinal lineup and no doubt a big factor in this series so far lars Nbar and Boo he’s their team leader in home runs so you know the pitchers on that other side man they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting you know he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop it’s not fluky at all he can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly so watch out when he steps in in the air pretty deep out to center field two away batting fourth first baseman Wilson Contrarus here’s Contrarus now [Applause] there’s the strike donovan the runner at first with two gone next offering is fouled back swing and a miss struck him out inning over the Cards leave one they trail it here three nothing back here in St louis here’s the rookie third baseman Matt Shaw mcgrevy back to work yeah the pitch is in for a strike and it’s 0 and one filling up the strike zone hasn’t been the problem so far it’s the quality of the strikes that’s been the real issue and you look at the first inning that’s what we saw too many pitches out over the plate [Music] just missed two balls one strike that’s to third aronado to first in time leadoff man retired here in the second batting night catcher Reese Maguire the batter now is Reese Maguire upstairs [Applause] next offering is fouled back one down base is empty so a foul ball makes it one and two look out that ball was smoked man I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensures safety for the fans last thing as a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit that misses and it’s two and two one out space is empty and a curve is down and in swings through that one it’s a strike out just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there not much to it and I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens at the plate and takes high there next pitch misses and the count is 2 and0 well usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 2 he’s put himself in a really good spot and another ball well I would expect in this three 0 count you’re taking all the way see if he’ll walk you kyle Tucker waiting to hit for the Cubs and the righty deals there’s the strike two out base is empty and that’s ball four tried another slider but it missed the plate one of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it tucker at the plate now that’s ball one runner on the go pitch in for a strike throw save well we all know this team is struggling right now and sometimes you just got to do something different to generate some offense a little more aggressive right there to put the pressure on the opponent we’ll see if it pays off on the scoreboard for this team it’s in and out of his glove still manages a throw that’s a third out no runs no base hits no errors and a runner left we go to the bottom of inning number two it’s the Cubs three and the Cardinals nothing back here at Bush Stadium we head to the bottom of the second now up for St louis Lars Newbar lars Newbar and that one upstairs ball one a three-0 lead is great but you can’t get too comfortable got to stay aggressive keep attacking hitters try to cruise through this ball game [Music] hit in the air left field cro Armstrong squeezes it and there’s one down batting six third baseman Nolan here’s Nolan Aronado that one drifts inside swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play the 1-1 misses the sweeper one ball two strikes started after the one-two pitch appeal to first no swing gary Simmons with the call [Music] here’s the 2- two on the ground to third shaw boots it no he’s safe fatty seven second baseman Nolan Gorman and at first here’s Nolan Gorman [Applause] [Applause] oh he doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0 aronado the base runner at first with one out and that’s in there for a strike and now it’s even james Kingsley working the plate kingsley’s pretty well respected around the league yeah when you talk to players I think consistently he is one of the guys you hear compliments about players appreciate the job he does back there yeah and that’s kind of all you can ask for really just a fair chance to go out and have success that missed by a lot the countdown two and two fast ball is outside man at first one away [Applause] and he couldn’t hold back he’s rung up on strikes oh big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed it’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed they tried to check the swing just couldn’t do it and up next for St lewis Pedro Pahes delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 highfly ball out to center field swanson on the move he’s there he’s got it and that’s the inning so one left for the Cardinals they trail in this one three nothing and welcome back to the ballpark all set for the start of the inning now the left fielder Seiya Suzuki been a rough start on the mound for this guy this third inning so important for him to get on track turn the page settle in do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one foul ball well he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there not sure exactly with the timing sometimes you get a backup breaking ball you’re expecting it to make its move at the end it never does and you’re tied up oh you know that’s going to be very frustrating for this guy he knows the strike zone extremely well and you know what good hitters are not going to compromise he’ll take that punch out but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else and next for the Cubs Pete Crow Armstrong and first off is fouled off outside with a breaking ball ripped on a line base hit so a man aboard now with one away couple of hits in a row for him here kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that you have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time and now they’ve got some speed on first so we’ll see if they try to get him into motion dansby Swanson stands in makes the grab and there’s two gone now batting the first baseman Michael Bush and up next for Chicago Michael Bush one for one with a single so far and that one missing low if he’s going to steal second you want him to go early in the count that way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch next offering in there for a strike and a count one and one that one pushed foul out of play off to the left foul ball still a one and two count two outs oh he hit him and that got him pretty flush he had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch nico her will come up to hit struck out swinging his first time cardinal that one fouled off [Applause] [Music] on the ground right side and that chance handled tosses to first and that is that Cubs strand a couple but they lead it three nothing set for the bottom of the third and stepping in for the Cardinals Victor Scott victor Scott the second slow ground ball to the right side and a foul ball [Music] next offering upstairs and he drops it down the third baseline rolls across the diamond they handle the bunt and get the out well he gave the bunt a shot there but not able to execute yeah I think he rushed it a little bit and when guys rush can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player donovan batting for the second time and that’s strike one swing and a miss and the count is 0 and2 02 is the count all right that skips into there that’s right [Music] this one in the air makes the catch for the out two away now now batting the shorts stop Mason the batter now Mason win fly to center his first time pop foul out of play off to the right foul ball there foul ball still 0 and two that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was and ball one one ball two strikes the count bows it off still one and two cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning red Birds down quietly still down three nothing as we go to the top of the fourth here’s the third baseman Matt Shaw inside almost got him right side burlson nabs it and a quick out number one up next for the Cubs catcher Reese Maguire here’s Reese Maguire he was a strikeout victim his first time oh he doesn’t get the call one and0 move into the bullpen for the Cardinals andre Palante appears to be getting loose gray also getting ready now one close rule to ball and that’s ball two swing and a miss nice change up benny really sells the change up with that arm action fly ball down the line burlson sizes this one up he’s got it and there’s two away now batting here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan michael McGrevy is done and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on not his best back with a new arm in a minute now pitching new arm of the mound for the Cardinals kyle Ley at this point of the ball game we’re talking about middle innings and a little length out of this arm coming out of the bullpen we’ll see just how many outs he’s able to give his skipper back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup and next is the designated hitter Ian Hap he’s 0 for one and that one hit to first he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it cubs are down quietly but they’re on top by a count of three to nothing ready to go bottom four now it’s the right fielder Alec Burlson ale Burlington burlson measures 6’2 in 26 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020 headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball just missed yeah that’s fouled off [Music] and a popup right side foul territory magguire sizing this one up has room and he makes the catch up next for the Cardinals first baseman Wilson Contrarus and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus struck out swinging his first time that one finds the zone that’s strike one base is empty one away we’re here in the bottom of the fourth that’s outside and that’s ball one and that one is inside good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone just off the outside corner and it’s three and two really good take especially with two strikes [Applause] check swing at a 3-2 appeal down to first and he held up just enough that’s ball four what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that ball so digging in Lars Nbar flyed to center his first time he’s 0 for one and a good fast ball to start him off that’s strike one well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count and a big swing and a miss quickly in an 02 count you’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball put it in play somewhere then you got a chance and misses inside that’s a little high two and two he’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here i love it that one to first one at second return throw to first got him double play and that’ll do it so no runs no hits no errors and no one left we’re headed to the fifth it’s the Cubs three and the Cardinals nothing back here in St louis so here’s Kyle Tucker now kyle Tucker yeah that’s outside ball one nope outside [Music] and that one fouled off i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up still two and two after the foul ball he goes down looking well that’s a pitch that slider from an opposite handed pitcher that you usually see very well but for some reason he didn’t pick it up and it just kind of got into the strike zone late gave up on it a little bit early you can do it you can do it and first offering is fouled off one down base is empty breaking ball gets the corner for a strike man 91 on the slider right there that’s a hard one that’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers [Music] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt and it beats him for out number two that’s a strike out oh I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there he got the change up and still late on it you rarely see that it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up i mean if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball swing and a ground ball base hit right field so a two out knock keeps the inning alive that’s back to back singles for him he kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock and you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole swanson digs in he’s already homerred in this game check swing called strike [Applause] hammers that one deep left field and forget it [Music] another homer his second home run of the game and they add to the lead it’s five zip that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the bat he throws a pretty hard slider but when it doesn’t break it’s just like a good fast ball to hit and right there eyes got big hit that ball really hard and now he’s getting high fives in the dugout so up next Michael Bush [Applause] first pitch doesn’t find the zone base is empty two away but two runs are in and we’re in the top of the fifth and that’s a little bit high and that’s ball two when the skipper calls down to the bullpen he’s expecting a guy to come in and get outs so far not getting what he was hoping for that catches the corner he’s been able to go inside as well as outside effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat check swing he went and now two and two [Applause] and that just misses and it’s ball four he missed down low now betting second base Nicoer two outs runner at first here’s Nicoer [Applause] at 96 that pitch is in for a strike there it was a high velocity fastball in the zone i think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter he’s got good stuff pitch inside the zone and trust it that misses and the count is one is empty Pedro Pahes next up for the Cardinals and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike well he’s been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point falling behind two and one that one missed here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense 3-1 count be ready to turn on a fast ball and there’s ball four close pitch there but you got to forget about that call if you’re out on the mound you can’t let it affect you going forward you’ve got to trouble getting rid of it and had to take that extra step which could have cost him but good job to make sure he got a good handle on it and he got off a good strong throw to still get the out and now the catcher comes up to him Reese Maguire just missed base is empty one away and we’re the top half of the sixth just missed action in the St louis bullpen john King the left-hander is getting that hitter Ian back to the top of the lineup ian Hap up to hit at 96 that pitch is in for a strike maguire stands at first with one out there’s his swing and a miss it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he’s really late right now swinging a ground ball and it goes just fouled and that’s the inside edge and the count is one and two and that there i think he tried to do a little bit too much sometimes those eyes can get really big i think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up here’s Kyle Tucker and first off home half of the sixth it’s the Cubs five and the Cardinals nothing bottom of the inning leading off Mason Win the shorts stop Mason Win and the first pitch misses for ball one and that one a little now the right fielder Alec Burlson for two in this one and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91 one’s the count the Cubs leading by five here in the bottom of the sixth right through there for a strike swang at a highf fly ball well struck that one back there feeling for the wall makes the catch and foul ground now batting first baseman Wilson here comes Wilson Contreras let’s go Cardinal and that is ball four that’s a great at bat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty we’re under at first with two away here’s the left fielder Lars Nukebar that’s a strike across the top of the zone activity in the bullpen brad Keller up and throwing for manager Craig Councel horton warming up as well let’s do it highfly ball down the left field line way back there onto the track and he makes the catch the Cards leave one still looking at that five nothing deficit now pitching welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound sunny Gray i think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn’t have the same intensity to it but he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score suzuki so up now for Chicago sey Suzuki 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out and in and that is ball one just missed next offering is in for a strike two balls one strike swing and a miss he was late strike two just threw that fast ball by him elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity fights it off he’ll see another [Music] that one outside full countdown battling here as he fouls it away well struck right field and it one hops the wall and that’s a leadoff double just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field runner in scoring position no outs and next will be the cleanup hitter Pete Crow Armstrong three for three with three singles and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter runner in scoring position nobody out here in the top half of inning number seven that one’s upstairs ball one [Music] smash to the left side that’s the first out in the top of the seventh now batting shortstop Danby Swanson and now it’s Dansby Swanson and the way he’s going in this one we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again all right listen everyone stop what you’re doing right now this guy’s got two home runs already now he’s going for number three swings through that one for strike one good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it that one catches the corner for a strike well you can’t expect to get a great pitch to hit with an open base and a runner on second he’s going to have to really tighten up his sights here make sure that he can barrel up the ball st louis next pitch is outside man at second misses and the count now even up and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now [Music] sunny Gray checks on the runner and he’s back in on a dive eighth pitch of the at coming up all right let’s go let’s go fouled off the plate they’ll do it again dansby will head back to the dugout after the K well I’d say he pretty much had to offer it that one you don’t want to leave it in the umpire’s hands even though it ended up outside the zone it still was close enough to where it looked like it could drop down right on that corner and get the call last thing you want to do is get punched out by the umpire knowing you could have at least fouled the pitch off and kept the atbat going bush stands in with two away as he takes a ball the bit behind with that swing it’s strike one this guy sink has so much drop in it it’s almost like a split finger fast ball instead of just weak contact and balls on the ground he gets swings and misses check swing called strike and the count one and two [Applause] ruer at second two down that one the other way he’s got it and that is out number three cubs leave one as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead [Applause] set for the last half of the seventh and now it’s going to be Nolan Aronado nolan Aronado come on let’s go basketball for a strike usually when a pitcher’s had a dominant outing he has filled up the strike zone and he’s gotten ahead in the count with first pitch strikes well that’s exactly what this guy has done in this one over 70% first pitch strikes that one in the dirt and it’s one and two down to the dirt swinging a miss onto first gets it one away on a drop third strike you hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach and that’s a great example why right there if he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt on the other side still a nice two- strike pitch though now it’s going to be Nolan Gorman [Music] next pitch is downstairs 99 pitches about to throw his 100th here in the seventh inning this is where you really start looking for any signs of fatigue the 1-1 is fouled off strike three and that’s two in a row thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger pahes in the box again takes the strike and that’s downstairs and outside two down nobody on here the bottom of the seventh out towards right center that’s well struck and it looks like trouble around first heading for two and that’s a double he was all over that one man that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way split the gap and know that you got extra bases right off the bat that’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night here comes the manager out of the on the bump Brad Keller and one thing on him he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park not an easy guy to take deep so runner at second two down victor Scott will hit next one for two and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike pahes at second with two down oh one in the dirt blocked so a wild pitch allows the runner to advance well that right there can be a tough read as a runner on second to see if the ball’s gotten away enough to move to third you have to be sure you can make it because you’re already in scoring position well he was sure there and now he’s only 90 ft away from scoring fights that one away still one and two and a good eye there ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning and we’re back here’s the second base Nico nicoer [Music] swing and a miss for the strike out cardinals now with just one out remaining well interesting he’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single back to back strikeouts so they haven’t been able to move that runner up get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring i tell you good job so far on the mound he just needs one more out pah stands in here takes ball one low just off the inside edge [Applause] that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one [Applause] they’re down to their final strike the Cards down to their final strike inside three and two now great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it highf fly ball out towards left field and a foul ball [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two [Applause] and a foul ball he stays alive and they’ll do it again [Applause] swinging a foul ball at the plate they’ll do it again swing and a miss curve ball in the dirt in time ball game and the strike out ends it sometimes it takes just getting away from home players can sort of come together connect a little bit more than they do when they’re at home with their families and that can breed to success on the field as we saw in this game today excellent win by this team 5 nothing the final in this one
