can also sign up to become a big by visiting bbs.org/allcity let’s do something meaningful together this week and as we welcome you inside the studios here at DLS this time we’re in person because the last time we had the esteemed Dallas Star Dallas Morning News stars beatw writer it’s a mouthful Leah Asimacopoulos with us we had to last minute pivot to a remote broadcast and it was you were very much willing to be here and then we had to call and and change it and I felt terrible but you were great it’s okay okay was that the Texas winter weather it happens yeah and I was willing to drive in that luds was willing to drive in it i live across the street so I could walk yeah you could have just put on the snowshoes and hiked in but unfortunately some of our other DLS folks were a little more concerned about the weather and I understand they have responsibilities we don’t so along with Craig Lewig and our producer Katya VBA I am Owen Newkerk and of course Leah is here and we are thrilled to have her leah this is actually DLSS diehard day which means they’re supposed to dictate i’ve been called the sheriff by a couple of our dieards because I quote unquote lay down the law when these two usually get going you being in the SAM chair today and we’ll get into that so we’re not going to just focus on the die hard questions we’ll get to those they’re great but we got to start with all the news so let’s do it matt Duchain signed an extension mason Marchment traded away steve Spot which we didn’t even get to yet because it happened this morning hired away by the Boston Bruins as an assistant that’s right spotter with the laser eyes look who Oh she can find it no longer a member of the Dallas Stars coaching staff the Idaho steal the spot i was waiting for it that’s awesome so now there’s an open spot get it oh that’s brutal we’ve got an affiliation extension and much much more so Leah what first let’s do Duchain first that to me wasn’t surprising was there anything about it that stood out to you specifically whether it was contract term the money the fact that when he was on our show yesterday he even admitted he goes “I didn’t want to sign the deal I signed last year.” Yeah but he did and then he went on to finally get some leverage maybe right yeah i mean I was happy for him in that sense because I think he was pretty open that he hasn’t that Jim Nil has kind of gotten his way the last couple of years which is kind of obvious based on the fact that you have a point per game scorer being paid $3 million and you know he could get a lot more money at a lot of places for that so I think that he deserved what he got it i think it was surprising for a lot of people just because you see that number of $455,000 left to sign whatever it was five or six players at the time and that is frightening um I think you have to wait and see what else is going to happen before you worry too much about that um but I guess I wasn’t too surprised i felt like he was going to come back i felt like he was going to get what he wanted i think a lot of people focused on the playoff run and that he kind of went cold in the playoffs but he was their most consistent player through 82 games in the regular season so I think you just you need to not ignore that and I think he earned what he got what about the the way the the length of it the deal is structured yeah uh him being in Dallas till he’s 38 is interesting it does seem like there are some possibilities for him to be bought out in the last two years so I’m sure they’re thinking about that if it comes to it uh I think it gives them a little bit of flexibility there but I was I was surprised in that sense that you know he’s 34 he we don’t know what anyone’s going to look like when they’re when they’re 38 and that is a commitment that you’re making but yes I’m I think Jim Nell is too smart to not give himself a little bit of wiggle room at least you got the age right was doing a show this morning out of Vancouver with I think it’s Owen’s buddies and I basically said I think I led off with Yeah it kind of surprises me that Matt got a four-year deal being 38 years old they’re like “What’s that?” Oh wait maybe he’s not 38 he’ll be 38 when he ends it right sorry Matt um yeah no I I think it’s I think again like the most consistent um player i I agree with that and you know are we are we bouncing right into Marsman now or we still staying on Duchaine uh we can do all of it we don’t have to do like your thoughts you know with Mason Marchman and it’s funny like I was bringing up to him yesterday why is the Marchman Duchain Sean you know when when everybody’s healthy why are they so good and then 24 hours later here we are right right it it felt like we didn’t get to see them healthy together enough it was just little spurts here and there someone was always getting hurt and that was unfortunate i I can’t say I’m too surprised by the Marchment news i mean someone was going to have to go and what pieces are you willing to part ways with i think pretty much anyone a Stars fan or within the organization would say Mason Marchman over a Jason Robertson or someone like that so you know I I think it’s it’s a move that’s I’m sure not going to be super popular among certain players in the room you know Jay Gottener to mention a lot i I think Marshmitt was you know very respected and and loved within the room i think there were some kind of glaring issues in terms of penalties you know he was a little inconsistent i do think he got better over time in Dallas i think the injury was tough this past year and was a bit of a setback for him um but I think he’ll do well in Seattle and I think he’s got a lot of potential and I think Dallas had to make that happen what about the return i think that the stars were a little strapped in the situation and they had to get what they could get essentially i would think you could do a little better than that but I think they’ll take the picks and you know it for me it felt like you just you had to get rid of someone who was valuable to clear up some significant cap room because you don’t know what they’re going to be able to do with a dumba if they’re going to have to buy him out instead or a labouch skin it felt like Marshm was someone you know you could get some return for so um yeah I’m sure Jimn would have liked to get a a second or something a little bit better but they’ll probably take it at this point i think when you when you look and and Jim has been around for a long time jim Nil’s been around for a long time he would have loved these kind of circumstances i mean back in the day when everything wasn’t so public and like you said everybody I mean it’s hard doing deals when you kind of know where everybody is and you only got a few hundred,000 to play with dude you’re you’re like we’re in the driver’s seat right now if you want a third and a fourth we’ll give you a third and fourth but good luck getting anything better right yeah let’s talk about Marchman’s thing for just a second when you talk about the return the the fact that they didn’t have to retain any sal or the whole point of they got rid of the whole contract and they got a couple of picks out of it and Sean made something interesting last night when we did our emergency pod suggesting that maybe they could then use one of those picks as a sweetener to move somebody like Matt Dumba’s contract away which would be very interesting and good business the irony of it is if Mason Marchman had had a more productive playoff run he would have been a higher valued asset but then maybe the Stars don’t want to get rid of him because he was more productive in the playoffs and that’s that catch 22 yeah no that’s that’s a good point i I think that he maybe made it a little bit easier to say okay you know and not that he was the only player that couldn’t score in the playoffs i mean there were there were plenty you could you could pretty much go up and down the the forward group at that point but um yeah I I do I agree with what Sean says about using one of those picks to move Dumba that’s going to be interesting because I I don’t I mean it depends on on what teams you’re looking at maybe you go to like an Anaheim or someone like that that’s probably where you have to be looking but the Stars did not have a lot of draft picks to to work with so I I think you feel a little more comfortable knowing there’s two more picks in your pocket that you can do something with and maybe you explore a buyout if that’s not an option i liked your comment you made because it’s it sort of tracks with something I thought of yesterday which was and I said this to Luds on our emergency pod about Marchman i thought Marchman’s best performance of his stars career came before the big nose facial injury that he looked like he was playing with the most confidence uh we always had this thing of he looked like he was teetering on the edge of being out of control with his skating during that span of time he looked more in control in addition to also making plays but Luds also had a really fascinating comment about him leaning kind of for as good as he was getting also starting to turn into a little bit more of a distributor instead of being the shoot first guy because of the guys he was playing with that line worked really well together but maybe wore off on him a little bit too much yeah well I I mean I feel like that line they just kind of understood each other so well i think I can think back to so many different moments in the season where it’s like Matthew Shane just knew Mason Marshman was going to be there or Tyler Sean i think we asked them about it and they kind of just said you play with guys long enough and and you just start to know where they’re going to be and you can you think a couple steps ahead and I’m sure playing two seasons together mostly with besides a few injuries here and there help them in that and yeah I I agree with you that Mason was playing his best hockey before that injury and I think that that injury maybe isn’t talked about enough because I I think there was a change afterwards and I mean I you can probably speak to this better than me but when you take a puck to the face like that and you’re bleeding like that on the ice and you’re rushed to the hospital and you have to have surgery i mean I imagine there’s got to be some kind of adjustment going back whether you’re wearing a bubble or not and and not even be able to breathe properly for what at least a month I think he said afterwards exactly if that reporting was right he he came on our show and said it still felt weird to sleep to breathe while sleeping and and that’s weird but l to Leah’s point say it looks like I’ve taken a lot of pucks to the face i just kind of put that all together i’ve never taken a puck to the face you’re more like a likely candidate than I am yeah that that’s obvious to Leah’s point though the understanding of your linemates is a really valuable tool because while hockey vision is a super incredibly important commodity if you can throw a puck to an area because you didn’t see your teammate but you know he’ll be there that allows you to make that play a little bit faster right as opposed to the a lot of times we call that the hope for pass i hope for it to go to one of my guys when it’s the no look one i get what you’re saying but I would prefer that pass to be thrown because the player that you’re trying to get it to is driving to the net yes is not over by the the faceoff dot which which is what we started to see which led me back to the what I said yesterday from from Mason when he was getting puck somewhere near the faceoff dot area top of the circle of faceoff dot on his side of the ice and maybe trying to hit whether it was Tyler or Duchain over on the other faceoff dot over there and you’re playing against teams in the playoffs that it’s hard enough to get interior and now we’re playing this east west game where we’re not getting anything out of it so and and to everything that you you guys were talking about is when you talk about how players get to know each other and you know they kind of know where they are and everything else that’s that’s why I always talk about the one through 82 because once you get to game 83 the team that you’re playing has gone over all of those players and all those trios and the partners they know everything what their plan A and plan B is and it’s kind of like defending if if I have a player that I know is always going to try to beat me at you know to the middle then I take the middle away to start with make it someplace else that’s the whole idea of scouting and things like that so I think sometimes you have to have more tricks in your bag and be a little bit it’s not always the same kind of hey they’re going to tic-tac-toe into the net and and I think that’s where this team needs to get back to it’ll be interesting to see where they go and we have a lot more to get to with Leah because you know even though we’ve got months before the season gets underway again September training camp they’re giving us plenty of news and so we’re going to talk more about the roster free agency by the way back burner they’re looking for a coach all that and more coming up on coaching hire so let’s go back to that for a minute and then we’ll look forward at free agency what was your overall take feeling opinion about game five against Edmonton what happened with Jake Hotinger Pete Dbor how the former Stars head coach handled it how he doubled down in the end of season media that we were at and then that eventually led to I don’t know if it was the only thing but that certainly was a contributor to costing him his job certainly was a contributor um you know I’ll say that I enjoyed working with Pete very much over the last two years i think that he was the right thing for this team when they brought him in and I think throughout the throughout the three years he was um I think that the way that he handled that situation with Jake just some someone was going to have to go in that situation you’re not trading your franchise goalender so it or something was going to have to be addressed and for me it was the moment when in our exit interviews with him he said that he still hadn’t talked to Jake and I that just didn’t sit right with me i don’t think it sat right with Jim Nil or Tom Galardi or anyone involved because that’s an important relationship jake Gotener is a very important part of this team and so is your head coach and there need they need to be on good terms so it wasn’t the pulling Jake i probably wouldn’t have done that in that moment but I’m not a head coach for a reason and Jim Nil has said he didn’t have a problem with with that decision the comments postgame didn’t sit right with me and then just the handling of it days later so and again I don’t think that that’s the only reason that Pete Dbor was fired i don’t think that that was a big enough situation to make an entire you know coaching decision on that uh but I do think that it was a factor and I think that I know you guys have talked about this it kind of spoke to some of the you know times over the past three years where Pete maybe didn’t take accountability in moments that he probably should have um and I don’t think that Pete talks a lot about players in the room you know being willing to take accountability and that’s why they’re so good and it felt like he wasn’t willing to do that in a really important moment uh and maybe they just needed a change too and there’s nothing wrong with that luds you talked about the same thing that Leah did about the communication side and the the shoot him a text or talk to Jeff Reese and say when would be a good time wedgie on the show on Tuesday I don’t even remember what day it is Friday today on Tuesday Scott Wedgwood was on the show and he said in his first win for as a Dallas Star he was shocked when Rick Bonis sent him a text saying “Hey great game we don’t win that without you.” Now he stood on his head but that shows you the difference for a coach that’s maybe communication was his number one strength versus one who maybe that wasn’t and we’ve heard from a couple other players different roles in the team that felt he they didn’t necessarily hear a lot from Pete but even if he didn’t talk to Jake in that moment two two days later he could have said “I sent him a message that we should sit down i want to give him a couple of days we haven’t talked yet but we’re going to.” Instead of “Oh I haven’t had a chance yet.” That part was just I I don’t want to use the use the younger term the ick but it was just a little It didn’t sit right the cringe oh cat wants the cringe what do I mean no i I Does that sit right with you i I completely agree i mean I it it just felt like the kind of excuse of like we haven’t had a chance yet well what else were you doing you know that was that was the biggest moment of that game and that changed the entire game that was the honestly probably the biggest moment of the series if you look back on it i mean not a whole lot else was happening on Dallas’s side in that series and just to say that you know oh we just haven’t had the chance i mean there was an entire day and I think you know this team is chronically online we like to say and I understand that that Pete D’Vorah maybe isn’t on Twitter the same way that Tyler Sean is or whatever but I’m sure you know that things were written about it he was asked about it directly he knew what the narrative was and I think sometimes we’ve seen with Pete he’s you know snapped he’s said things uh my colleague Tim Kashaw got some some kind words from Pete at the end of the game and the next day he turned around and said you know I handled that poorly I would have said things differently and now Pete and Tim have been on great terms since you know he’s know he knows how to diffuse a situation and he just to your point though he walked that he snapped at Kalasha this was the conference final two years ago not this or last year yes the 24 conference final not the 25 and he walked it back and kind of did damage control so then why not do that right instead of doubling down in the end of season he calls out Jake when it was clearly not just Jake’s fault that they lost two years in a row to the Oilers he could have in the end of season media said “Listen,” and he said “No one’s a bigger fan than Jake of Jake than I am.” But then he kind of doubled down he could have just said “Hey I’ve had 48 hours to to sleep on it there’s a lot more to it than just our starting franchise goalie right and and in that moment I also think actions speak a lot louder than words it’s very easy to say “No one’s a bigger fan of Jakeer than me.” Okay well then you have to go show that you have to show that he’s your priority and I just don’t think that that was done in that moment and it it contributed to costing him his job and I would love you know I’d love to hear from Pete and and I’m sure we all would and I understand why you know he may not want to talk about that and I’m sure he wants to stay in coaching and you know is looking forward at this point but I wonder at this point does he have regrets about that would he have done things differently and does he think that that was kind of the final straw and what what else you know contributed to it was it the losing streak at the reg end of the regular season was it things as small as you know the fine that they took around the holidays it just felt like a lot of little things uh but that was definitely the big one and you mentioned before you and Pete had a if it’s it just from an observational standpoint a mutual amount of respect and I he he always referred to you by name yeah not everybody gets that no and I thought that was really cool and he always had time for you if there was an extra question where sometimes he might walk off at the end of one but if he could sort of sense that you were you had one more leah did you have one more like and I thought that was really cool i think he’s a great coach i I don’t think this changes anything but I also as we’ve gone through and sort of digested this I think it’s time for a different voice and maybe a different set of solutions yeah I I agree it’s It’s such a weird thing kind of being in a media like this where you’re working with people every day and then you’re seeing them get fired and get traded and you know get bought out or whatever it’s such a awkward position to be in because you I think you can feel multiple ways about it and yeah my initial reaction was like “Oh I I do feel like I had a good relationship with Pete i did enjoy working with him this is my first time covering professional sports and you know I he’s made he made my transition to doing so easier and I appreciate him for that but at the same time I totally you know it’s kind of what Matthew Shane said when he talked about it on the ticket he said “I I feel like I’m being pulled in two different directions because you know you also have so much respect for Jim Nil and I don’t think many people in Dallas question the decisions that Jim Nil makes.” And he felt like it was time and I think a lot of people understand why so I I agree that it’s it’s time for a new voice um and that’s why a lot of these conversations about internal candidates maybe confuse me a little bit because I know you can have a new voice with an assistant or you know a Neil Graham but it feels like you need a a real new voice if you’re going to make a decision like this i’m in total agreement Luds what do you think is internal right now listening to you two talk for the last seven minutes i I’m just glad you you’re still engaged i thought you might actually I’m trying to get re I’m trying to get back because I well I I know I kind of floated around for a little while so I I had this it’s been a couple weeks right and so I know I had originally said that you know he could at least shoot him a text message right next morning and say hello same so I’ve kind of walked that back a little bit i I don’t think being that it’s your franchise goalender i don’t think you leave the building that night without just something stick your head in ask one of the trainers hey can you go grab Jake Jake for and then then say that you know I mean you don’t have to have a talk with them yeah just say let’s chat in a couple days or what do you want to do i don’t I thinking that back I’m thinking no you don’t leave the building that way i don’t think either one of them has a good night’s sleep on that it’s like the don’t go to bed angry right with your your partner spouse whatever like get it out i have anger man but but and and here’s the other thing is I I don’t know and you you guys see them all the time i felt and over the course of the time that Pete’s been here his pressers interviews and things like that are so well thought out everything is calm and cool again just running things back I felt like he was a little bit more agitated or not his same cool way as the playoffs went along not just in the finals there was some there were some things and the answers were short and you know things like that and that’s not the first time that’s happened but you noted in that I say that is because I think there and because you mentioned Jim Nil and they have this relationship i think there was something said prior to this i think there was in the coaches room just I could have been in the first it could have been at the end of the season it could have been before this the round started and and not hey you’re getting fired but something that maybe he goes home at night going huh wait why did he make that com i don’t know any of that sure but but I’m just saying it just seemed like some of these things even when they were winning rounds it was he was getting shorter answers but um anyway my and so now that I forgot everything else I was going to say to you two when we were talking because I I did remember two of the seven things I wanted to say have you had a chance to ask any of the players about any of this no I’ve tried have you tried okay and they’re all just taking the fifth yeah they don’t want to do that well and that’s fair i mean that’s okay and that’s what I would expect but I would expect somebody may return something and then tap dance around it right not not so much no I mean I I I kind of understand too i I figured a lot weren’t going to want to talk about it and the only person I’ve heard comment active player I’ve heard comment about on it is Matt Duchain doing so on his like weekly appearance on the ticket um but yeah I I think I I wanted to talk to Jay Gottinger about it but I understand him not wanting have you looked at any of the players since this has been over okay so you’ve had no I haven’t had a chance to but nobody’s reached out back to you is that Yeah okay so you’ve reached out they just haven’t reached out okay what about from the the organization side because this is now that we’ve had has it been two weeks is it that long i two weeks today yeah two weeks today what’s your sense because I I really agree with you to me I think Ela Nazerine would be a great head coach for an NHL team i don’t think that’s enough of a change maybe it is maybe he sitting on things that were different enough from Pete and he wants to be more defensive but also still use the offensive attack which Jim clearly likes to build but what do you when you talk to the members of the front office that you have insight on what are you hearing from them about this search not a lot and I think that’s been a frustrating part of this for everybody and I know that Jim Nil runs a very tight ship and I think that I was assuming by now you know I I think there’s a lot of a lot of rumblings on Twitter of like have we not heard anything and it’s not like I we’re not trying to hear things but anytime I’ve been trying to you know get some names on some people it’s been we’re going to leave it to Jim and Jim and Jim just Jim wants to keep it you know close right now which I respect and I think they’re in a very unique situation because it’s not like there’s anybody else looking for a head coach right now and I think that’s a lot of times when someone else is looking for a head coach maybe you can hear from them or you hear you know candidates being interviewed by multiple teams or whatever they don’t feel rushed because they don’t have to be rushed right now i think you want to have a head coach in before free agency i ideally I would think yeah more so than the draft I think yeah more so than the draft but I I would assume based on just you know I would hope that they would hire someone in the next week but again you don’t know i just had a thought here because I was in a total agreement with you and we were talking about this with Sean that before free agency if you’re trying to lure not lure is the wrong word if you’re trying to recruit somebody to sign with you as a free agent knowing who the coach is going to be is probably important unless you’re trying to just reassemble the players that are and we’ll get into this in a little bit about the free agents that are out there because they might already want to be here you know Duchain was on our show yesterday and and said that it wasn’t that big a deal to him because location competitive team chance to win a Stanley Cup family likes it all those reasons why he wanted to stay he clearly wasn’t waiting for who’s going to be the coach to sign for four more years but also he’s been a part of this team for two years and I think he said to you guys that he trusted Jim Nil and I think that if you’re bringing in somebody new who of course Jim has a great reputation but maybe they don’t have that same trust yeah and I mean Duchain knows his place in the locker room he knows his relationships with his teammates i could understand you know if you’re trying to go out and not that I think they have the money to do this but you go make a splash signing in free agency it might be harder to convince somebody especially after just how everything ended i think everyone around the league is probably aware of it was a little bit of an awkward ending with with Pete Dbor who are they going to bring in what is that what’s the culture gonna be like um of course they can talk to players already in the room about that but I I I don’t understand why you would and and I think Pete Dbor also had a hand he we asked him about this with the Miko Ranson and trade he did say of course Jim kind of led the charge but he was a part of those conversations so why would you not want your headache what was his comment something about this one was pretty easy if you can get Ranson in you go do it yeah of course he goes you didn’t really need me to tell you that right but I think you’d want your next head coach to be involved in those decisions so yeah I think the draft especially without a first or second round pick probably not as important but Jim knows also going to be really busy that weekend so maybe he wants to get it done before before all that it’ll be interesting to see what they do with the coaching search as we continue we’re going to get to the free agency stuff because there’s a lot more still to do not just Marchman and Duchain but up next it is Die Hard Day and we have a lot of questions and topics from the dieards for Leah and we’re going to go rapid fire next they extended nose longest too this is about Bud Light right we’re we’re talking Bud Light now i could have had six buds lights while these two were going off over here as I didn’t do anything uh Stars fans what’s up we are now exactly seven days away from our marathon show next Friday evening for three hours that I know nothing about any players in the draft i don’t know any kids names i know nothing so alls I know is Bud Light so I already have an Uber on call now the Stars they don’t have any first round picks so I think we’re all looking forward to see what Jim Nil pulls out of his coat pocket cuz he will do something there will be something going on enjoying the game should be easy so don’t overthink it what to wear throw on that favorite Cyrus jersey if you have any left not sure what to serve your friends that’s even easier pick up some pizza and grab some Bud Light and stock up the fridge see it’s all just that easy just like Bud Light which is always brewed with four simple you all right not promised i told you we were going to get to the die hard questions but we Jim Nil’s busy we got breaking news right now we’re already on we don’t have to do an emergency pod so I was going to have Cat play a drop like a but we’ll just use that really low rent she’s got something going on leah this is happening as in real time yes because at 1:00 you already saw this i hadn’t checked my email because I’m focused on doing the ad reads and stuff at 1 p.m the Stars announced that Nils Lungquist has signed a one-year $1.25 million contract extension he was arbitration eligible then four minutes ago the Stars announced that they have signed Maverick Bourke to a one-year $950,000 contract extension he is an RFA we all talked about the potential for an offer sheet possibly because of being out there and you know again the stars being up against it but they just locked up a young defenseman and a young forward for very reasonable dollar amounts yes wait did you just say locked up locked up for the year that’s not locked up no no no okay they said I’m sorry no but it’s one year but that’s not that’s not a ringing endorsement for I’m waiting for these two players to break out no but it’s taking care of loose ends with very little cap space i’m You’re right they didn’t lock them up long term we can get into a discussion on why if you want about whether they actually want to see I think they’re still they’re waiting to see where they go i agree but we were going to talk about free agents so we might as well now you have I believe five forwards left and two UFA defensemen if I’m not mistaken i may have counted that alto together smith and CC on defense and then you’ve got Ben Donovan so five UFAS left and Blackwell oh and Blackwell so you got six UFAS left yeah i thought there were seven so that’s right uh you won UFA or No these are both RFAS but either way whatever yeah mhm what are your thoughts um I agree with kind of what both of you are hinting at i think that this is saying we’re going to try it out for another year and see what happens i think that I think it’s hard to make a long-term commitment on Nils Longquist right now because it’s been so up and down over the last couple years but what I’m like very excited to see is what Niels Longquist looks like in Dallas post Pete Dbor era because it felt like Jim Niels always really believed in him and wanted him to be a part of this organization and obviously invested a first round draft pick in him but Pete never really totally believed in him and maybe it was trending in that direction this year but he’s got his season ending surgery and that just all kind of fell apart so I’m curious to see what it looks like now if when they bring in a new head coach depending on who that is of course um so I think you see how this year goes and then you make more decisions but I guess that’s the same money they signed him to last year so yeah it’s it’s a bargain in that sense uh Maverick I think for under a million is also a pretty good signing obviously Maverick didn’t really get his opportunity in the playoffs i think there’s also still a little bit of uncertainty on what happens with with him but you give it another year he’s played his rookie year he’s kind of has that under his belt and we and you see from there um but I mean they have to sign players to who are affordable at this point they have to fill the roster right they have to fill the roster and I didn’t really with RFAS especially yes there’s a whole offer sheet thing with Maverick but I kind of anticipated that those two players were coming back i mean they’re affordable they were reliable for them at times and I think you trust them more than you trust bringing up someone from the AHL who maybe played a handful of games in Dallas and led to the offer sheet line i didn’t think that Maverick Bourke was a prime contender because I don’t know if we saw enough i think there’s something there but I don’t think we’ve realized his full potential at the NHL level nobody’s seen enough and I I look at these as you know again you’re you’re trying to bring in some players here now you could say “Well we have a couple players here but yeah they’re not.” So now you got a couple players that are signed and if you wanted to throw them into a deal if you wanted to not saying and that could doesn’t have to be now that could be halfway through the season when you get to the trade deadline so you know and again I I think you’re right and I I do agree about Niels i I think that I think what what Jim sees in in Niels is is to see let’s watch him play for a different coach that maybe gives him an opportunity to play and not because it’s hard to play that way you know i’m sure it is and if you got to be you know and again it’s hard to be a hard physical defenseman when you you know that’s not who you are he’s a skilled guy which is what I think Jim likes and the same thing with Maverick i think that you’re you’re hoping now that that he can he gets an opportunity to get a steady diet of being at 15 to 17 minutes a game and see what you’re getting and then you know again and maybe that’s that’s an agent saying “No you know what let’s just do one year.” I mean it could I mean I’m sure I think there’s a lot of different ways personally who Niels you know the agent for Niels Linquist is Clo Lemieux yeah and you know him quite well and and Pepe’s not an easy guy to get along with just in general you know um but he’s very hard you know and and I’ve heard things about I don’t know him as a as an agent but I don’t think you know he didn’t stray too far away from who he is as a player i wouldn’t think so so yeah i mean these are again numbers you got you got guys under contract should you should it come to some point where okay what if we throw this guy in there you know I mean he’s on a good deal he’s only making 900 million um does that sweeten the deal at all let me ask you both a couple of things boy we’re not an hour is just not going to cut it we’re going to have to keep it for Katcha’s sake but I promise you we’ll have more which I guess when you have two and a half months before a hockey game again it’s good that we have something to talk about are you happy now with Miro Lungquist Petravic Leouchkin as your four options in in whatever order down the right so that if you were able to unload the Dumba contract which I think would be easier just because there’s one year left versus two and I’m not and we’ve said this before I I don’t think you need to there’s this impetus to get rid of Labouchkin no I agree but are is that enough down your right side because clearly on your left you have Harley you have Lindell you have Bishell are you happy going into the season if that’s your group if they’re able to find a way to get Dumbo off the books or do they need to improve i think they should try to improve but I don’t know if they’ll be able to i mean that’s I’m I’m sure that I don’t I don’t think you can look at that group i think I mean Miro is obviously playing on his non-dominant side he’s been fine doing that no one wants him to be but that’s just the role he’s going to be in at this point i think we all kind of accepted that the left is too too full for them to be back at this point labouchkin I I agree i know there’s been a lot of like rumors of Trey Labouchkin but like I think he was pretty solid i I think he also the PE didn’t even play him in the in a lot of the Edmonton series when they needed a quality penalty killer like I think it maybe could have gone a little different i don’t think you need to get rid of a Vouchkin i think it’s you know for a like a you know bottom you know ideally a bottom pairing but probably not it’s a it’s okay i can Do you think there’s any chance that CC comes back because of the money i I don’t think so i just I don’t think they have the money to do it and I think you look at CC and he’s kind of in the prime of his career he’s probably looking for more money at this point so I I don’t think that I would be very shocked if they can find a way to make that work but so what do we have mero we have Lushkin we have you said Petravic and Longquist i mean I think Petravic has earned more opportunities um I don’t know if if you start him in the AHL and maybe bring him up midway through the year like you know what they did with Bishel or whatever see what that looks like i don’t know but I do think that between him and Lungquist it can they can hold their own um but yeah if you can go out and get someone that’d be great but I don’t see a way that you do that without trading a Jason Robertson someone you know who’s going to be a top pairing right shot defenseman you know that there’s not a lot of those out there period and they’re not cheap so I think they’re going to have to be okay with it it’d be great if they can get a little more support and I think that was kind of what Jim tried to do last year of you bring in you know Brendan Smith and and Dumba and and Labouchkin and you hope that one of them works and I guess one of them kind of did work and the other two probably aren’t going to come back so I guess that’s the goal but um yeah the left side’s going to have to carry as it has for some time now lud same question to you about the defense this give me the size of Cody Cece what is listed at all right let me look it up 6’2 63 220 215 he somewhere in that neighborhood if you look at his official listing it’s 63 210 okay pretty solid guy give me Give me Labouchkin be in the same ballpark i mean I think it’s pretty close but we’ll actually give you the as soon as it loads good vamping right 622 200 so CC a little bigger not much but a little bit so what would happen if those two guys were playing in front of their own net when they’re supposed to be in front of their own net well that’s we something we haven’t seen a lot of that’s my point let these guys use their size kind of like Petro played and Yes and now all of a sudden you have Bishial let’s say you have Petro and you Labushkin and Cece and and Essa you know I’m not gonna throw Mero under there because Miro Miro does different things and Miro is not that guy that is going to be hard to play against in front of your net i mean I don’t expect that he can he can add to that thomas Harley I think can can give you a little more push i again I look at these guys they’re all good skaters where they are now but when you have defenseman that have this kind of size and that should be hard to play against but they’re running around in the corners and at the top of the circles chasing their guy I don’t think you give them a chance to do what they’re good at and if we want to be harder to play against and you don’t want your goalender to have to face all these high danger chances not I shouldn’t say all you know five six seven eight of these 10 bell saves that he has to make in a game is ridiculous he’s going to have to do a couple but maybe not so many absolutely and and and again I I say this I think Jake got wore down as the playoffs went along because of that because of the way that system is but if you let these guys I don’t think we really know how good these guys can be in in a normal Well you heard what Wedgie said on Tuesday was talking about the layered system that that Nashville’s trying to play the way Vegas does so well even Edmonton he goes “Put Jake in that system.” He goes “He would be phenomenal cuz he’s just staying on his post and and just think of how much energy he has left in him really not you’re not doing anything from going here to here and things stay on the perimeter the hardest thing is is that as a defenseman you either have to block it or you have to get out of the way because and and that thing the the last thing you want is to have you know two guys standing in front of you and you can’t and you can’t see through but that that all can be I don’t even want to say taught because these guys have been playing in the NHL for a long time you can seal people out before they even get to the front of the net so it it but again it’s hard to seal people out when you’re 40t away from your where you’re supposed to be that’s just my thing and I’m not going to get off it until it’s changed we don’t have a ton of time left but I want to have you both rapid fire here from the free agents granland is he back can they make room is it important for them to do that i think they should try i think it’s going to be tough but I think I mean if they can they should bring him back i think he was great bloods yeah how old is he 32 32 I think 32 and what did he get last year what did he make last year he was making five five four years i don’t know if they I don’t know if he’d take it 33 and they he his previous capit was as but I will say this for if he’s 33 34 whatever he is he didn’t play his age he played better than his age in my opinion yeah I and I think he’s I think he’s a whether you play him on the top line or you you know he he kind of fits in on a second third line however you want to put your lines together I think he’s a player that you would want back i think we’re all in agreement that Jamie Ben is going to be here we don’t know the number but he will donovan I think I don’t think he was Pete’s guy yeah uh and he’s 36 i thought he was Well Pete’s had it since he was 16 or something like that so maybe he’ll go play what about Blackwell at 32 it makes the league minimum so I think you know for a depth piece it would be a no-brainer for me if you can get them at that same number right um are you trying to open the door though for any of the younger guys to come up well and that’s the question right does does mate Blumel Justin Ritzovian have a shot at training camp to earn a spot this year there was a spot open oscar Beck won that spot is there going to be a spot or not and I’m again I I have no nothing bad to say about Oscar but I’m I don’t know what you know what I mean if he’s your 13th forward is that okay yeah but I don’t know i mean should he be your third i don’t know can he would he want to go someplace where he can be in the top you know in the top well he’s under contract for two more years so they’ve got time well that doesn’t mean he can’t go anywhere that’s true that’s another piece there’s another piece right there that if you wanted to throw that in for a deal I I don’t think if if Oscar goes someplace and and he gets to play great but I don’t know if you’re going to miss him if you move him um the other ones of course we talked about CC already Brennan Smith as much as he’s a phenomenal guy and I still still think there’s something left in the tank for him clearly under Pete and that system they just didn’t want to use him enough and uh I want to give Leah a chance to say this luds kept saying why not if you’re worried about not having somebody stick up for rope hints or any of the other stuff put Brennan Smith as a forward i thought when he did play forward those couple of times he was pretty effective at the fourth line that was the best he played all year i think and I was so intrigued by that signing of oh you have a player who can play both forward and defenseman i mean I think that’s fascinating i really hoped that they were going to use him in that way and they did and it was great and then they put him back to defenseman and it just wasn’t great so it it was tough and I I wonder how much it was you know the trust with Pete pete system but I don’t see that’s an interesting idea is a new coach does that open the door because Well maybe he’ll at least have one conversation with Well Smith and N have a relationship from their Detroit days so maybe there’s something there well I mean I think when you don’t get you don’t have any communication with your head coach as the season rolls along I mean it’s it’s difficult enough the way it is but when you’re you don’t know what’s going on and then what you probably are doing is you’re talking to your D coach and Elaine’s probably doesn’t have you know ultimately you want to hear it from the from the head guy and and I don’t think that happened up next I promise you this time unless they do a bunch more signings which is always possible let’s get to those DLS diehard questions and comments and topics and try to cram it all in in about a 12m minute segment or less here on DLS but first let’s talk about the ball knower bonus because it’s still going we might have thought that it was going to end last night but the Pacers are still alive it means they have one more chance to win an All City gift card to our merch store if you pick correctly year’s NBA Finals if you get it right and make your pick and make your order you will get a gift card on us for the same amount that’s the ball knower bonus now let’s talk about a couple other DS die hard things and we’re going to get to all the die hard questions in a second those lovely folks on the Cowboy show are headed to Vegas i’m trying to be nice about it because we’re not at all salty about not being sent to Las Vegas november 15th to the 18th Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino DLS Cowboys Show is going on a road trip it’s Monday Night Football Cowboys and Raiders at Allegiance Stadium you can get there with the there it says all-incclusive and there’s this thing running joke in DLS right now don’t ask what all-incclusive means but there’s a bunch of things going on including what we say is Led’s favorite thing free time in Sin City that would be a trip in itself then you have meetup i did do the cowboy show yesterday or does that qualify you to go on the trip i I think Oh there you go i don’t know Bobby i did do the cowboy show does that mean Yeah see the everybody is like ask him yeah oh yeah pass the buck so anyway sign up for DLS Die Hard because you get 20% off all travel including that trip okay boy we could do Remy Porier signing Ben Crawz signing the affiliation cameron Hughes just signed another extension jonathan Taves we’re going to scrap all of it because we got to go to the die hard stuff so Leah buckle up this is for Luds too sooner fan 4321 leah what was your favorite moment slashstory from the season to cover i’ve said this before but I mean going to Finland was incredible um it was I was I really wanted to go and I pitched the DMN to you know send me so I could get some behind the scenes kind of look looks into you know Miro and Rope and Essa’s lives and got to you know go with Miro to his hometown and the rink that he grew up skating at i got to go to lunch with Rope and have salmon soup even though I don’t like fish uh but it was it was so fun um and just like watching I I’ve never really experienced sports outside of this country so seeing Finnish hockey was unbelievable and I think that’s going to be a moment that like everybody who was involved in the organization who was there like will never forget and I know I won’t so you’re saying that the drive I understand the drive from Fargo doesn’t that’s number two that’s Well I was going to say was it easier to get What were you thinking easier to get to Winnipeg so when I I mean you I don’t think you could What time what was it march no February what was it no no no it was It was in the playoffs it was April or May oh so it was only like 45 yeah it was it was fine like what did did Ben do your scheduling for you to to get you there or So here Okay here’s what I’ll If you heard about Sam’s trials and tribulations I know well honestly I’m like I’ve heard after hearing what Sam went through this year I’m kind of glad with every decision that I made cuz I did not miss any games so that was Well it starts by not booking on Spirit Airlines that Yeah i don’t It starts by being Sam that’s too And well so I had a lot of troubles with travel last year going to Edmonton and knowing that I have to go Why why because the weather in Dallas it was just a night like my flights were getting delayed it was just a nightmare so I said I’m going to spend as like as little amount of time on a plane as I can and honestly I really liked going like driving it was such an easy drive from Fargo to Winnipeg i had a car the whole time I was in Winnipeg it’s a straight line it’s straight it’s a straight shot oh you can if your dog runs away you can watch him run for three days exactly nothing exactly ls this is a question from the Sooner fan for you and they’re just trolling right now have you gotten a Switch 2 the Nintendo Switch 2 and are you going to collab with I Love Misty on a Dating Sim speedrun i don’t know what any of that means i know that’s why they’re trolling you on that i have Yeah this is from Matthew leah asked Leah her favorite restaurants when where when where oh what her favorite restaurants were i read that wrong he didn’t write it wrong when she was on the road covering the team during the playoffs during the playoffs okay um well as a lot of people know I tried Pete Dbor’s favorite pizza spot in Denver and that was fun uh Pete gave me a little bit of a hard time saying that I was too harsh of a critic uh and that I did not I gave pizza like a seven and a half or an eight or something apparently that was too harsh it was solid it was Slice Works in Denver you said you were a harsh critic yeah I know right that doesn’t seem right that was a couple weeks earlier a couple weeks before but I did get some good recommendations um from some of the other media that had traveled back and forth between Edmonton and Florida last year for the final and I found this good like uh tapas place and I had some sangria and some good tapas in downtown Edmonton which who would have thought so that was what kind of place tapas like Spanish tapas it’s like little Spanish appetizers i thought she said topless i was like me too of course you heard that you know you know you know what I’m doing yeah so that was good but honestly the the road food in Winnipeg and Edmonton did not blow me away so yeah it would have been interesting if you had let’s see what was Vegas was one of them or LA last year was great yeah there a couple other options out there that that rub it in um let’s see baseball Adam around the horn question which fictional sheriffman of the law does Owen most remind them of this is going back to the comment of me being the sheriff with the show or whatever which is silly but that’s what the dieards want it’s all you who me yeah i wasn’t listening well that’s okay that’s perfect i I’m still stuck on Vegas and topless topless i’m thinking we I could accomplish both like going around the Cowboys trip all right let’s go to Uncle D then can Jaime Ben return to form under a new head coach with a more physical approach was his physicality a Pete Debor issue well he told Wayne Gretzky that he’s a checker now right he did so we’ll see uh I think so i mean I I think there’s something left for Jamie i think Jaime was solid in the regular season i mean he went on that slump a little bit at the end and playoffs weren’t great but yeah I think he just has to acknowledge that his role is different and I think he brings a lot more to this team than goal scoring and anyone in the room will tell you that so I’m curious to see what it looks like the only player that’s going to get Jamie to play tougher more physical whatever you want to call it is Jamie yeah it’s not going to be another coach jaime’s Jamie i thought Duchain had an interesting line yesterday to us when he said that Jaime doesn’t always realize how impactful he is when he’s not scoring because and you know what that mean you know what I read between the lines when he made that comment is he gets down on himself yeah you know what I mean and I don’t think he’s saying he shouldn’t he he brings more to it than that and which which I think for fans I think he shouldn’t be here you have to understand how important just just having the presence of a certain player and Jaime’s been you know Jaime’s been to war for this organization you know so um there’s nobody that wants this whole group and and that means upstairs and in the locker room to win more than Jamie question for Leah which Stars player do you like interviewing the most i say that not necessarily trying to link it to the Jamie Ben conversation all due respect to Jamie there’s a lot there’s a lot of good ones uh I mean Duchain’s the best quote in hockey i think a lot of people will say any media that comes into town in the playoffs always says that but my personal favorites I really like talking to Jake um he’s always been very you know generous with his time and just easy person to talk to and I think Wyatt’s great too um Scott Wedgwood was my personal favorite before uh before he left so maybe we can get him back one day we talked to both of them in the span of three days here’s one from Clarotus i’ve always wondered how away game logistics are handled for media members do you do all of you book your own accommodations or is there someone who handles all of that for you that’d be a question for Sam that depends on where you work so can you find someone else because it’s clearly not working yeah uh for me I book my own travel uh but I know it depends on where you work like I know a lot of the NHL.com people that travel they book it for them so yeah there was a big misconception when I was posting about my travels in the playoffs everybody asked “Why didn’t you just go on the team charter?” Said “Well that’s not how it works.” So we offered since Mike Haiko was at the party it’s been a while i would love if that were an option can you imagine how easy that would be just get on their plane just for the Edmonton trip and the Winnipeg trip so I don’t have to drive from Fargo but now I book my own travel and um and we hope for the best ryan asked a question about the defense we literally answered all these questions about the four on the right so we’re going to skip that Ryan but you know we we touched that right tyler writes in “What separates Dallas Stars fans from the other sports teams you cover slash are familiar with it can be good or bad though I know the tendency to butter us up is it in these situations no I I actually really enjoy uh covering the Stars and Stars fans are a big reason why i also cover college football and college football fans are very different uh no disrespect to them but I think Stars fans are you know very very passionate sometimes too passionate and get a little bit too paranoid like yesterday when things are happening and they don’t really they can’t really understand why Jim Nell is making decisions but I’ve I’ve loved you know being a part of just kind of the online community in Stars fans i think there’s just a different level of you know it’s a very niche fan base here in Texas Texas hockey whatever but I I like the way that you know Stars fans are so kind of die hard about it and um follow our work i know all so uh so religiously and um it’s it’s been a fun part to be a part of matthew wrote another one of asking both you and me what our funniest memory of covering the stars at home or on the road are um I don’t have one off the top of my head dude those are hard to come up with off the top of your head there’s been a lot i mean I will say I really enjoyed that press conference with Matt Duchain this year where he was talking about the glass banger and the woman behind Pete and all the moments that have happened at American Airlines Center uh it was just like he he just hit on all the the the great the great times i don’t know what he not in society anymore was the the words that he used so you know they the players have fun it’s a long season and I think even Pete you know he gets ser he got serious in the playoffs but we had a lot of fun with Pete too and his pizza and all sorts of things like that i think the Leah kind of not dumping on but cooling the Big Mac pizza and the jalapeno popper one in Denver for Pete going “Yeah it was okay.” And he went “Really?” I enjoyed that we’re almost out of time lads but I would love for you in about 20 seconds to tease our next show which is not We We’re off Monday we have guests on Tuesday is that the next one that’s our next one it is Friday we do get a weekend off well it’s scheduled i know one of the two are going to be here for sure okay but next Tuesday uh in studio as of last night you know how I’m putting this online here uh Belffor will be in studio and then uh Matt Richard Matt Fchuk will remote in from Colorado so Eddie Tuesday Eddie fingers crossed Tuesday at 2 o’clock luds i believe Sam will be here i mean you know it’s like Eddie it’s day Tuesday tuesday okay so if Ed is here there’s a chance that Luds may not be here on Wednesday no I’m just I’m just saying so and uh Robert Tiffen will be here on Wednesday so we can always cover that if we need to leah I wish we had more time we didn’t even get to everything but a lot of fun better in studio than remote so much better it was great it was really fun come back anytime by the way let’s mention we have a 3-hour or so draft show on Friday if you happen to be around we’d love for you to It’s Diehard Day – the final day of DLLS Spirit Week – which means our beloved Diehards will be dictating show topics and asking questions. The Dallas Stars made some big moves yesterday. Matt Duchene signed a four-year contract extension, then Mason Marchment was then traded to the Seattle Kraken for a couple draft picks. The Stars extended their ECHL affiliation with the Idaho Steelheads for two more seasons and if that wasn’t enough news, assistant coach Steve Spott has been hired away to be an assistant with the Boston Bruins. On today’s show, Lia Assimakopoulos, the Stars beat writer for the Dallas Morning News, will be our in-studio guest as we break down all of this offseason activity and look ahead at the moves still to be made.
