Chiefs CAMP BATTLES! Who Has the BEST CHANCE to Make the Roster?
you all these jerseys signify nearly the beginning of Chief’s training camp but starts less than a month away inching closer and closer every single day and we are going to talk about some players that you might not be hearing a lot about that have a legitimate shot to make the roster with big impact during the training camp in July and early August into the preeason this is where we are at right now with not much going on in the off seasonason between the mini the uh mini camps and OTAAS going into regular training camp where we get to see guys how they’re going to react putting those helmets on the pads on for the first time seeing how they all hit and what we want to see is how these players are going to end up taking advantage or not taking advantage of the opportunities laid in front of them here on RGR football my name is Daniel Harms senior film analyst and I’m going to bring you guys something a little bit different today there’s going to be some film we’re going to talk a little bit more about the players and the opportunities set in front of them but right now if you guys are new to the channel please hit that sub button right now become a member here at Rogue Nation and then follow along hopefully I’m able to earn a like from you guys because this is going to be like I said a little bit different than what my normal videos consist of and because we do have more of that coming up I want to start right off with one of the guys that you’re probably not familiar with who Ryan has talked about a little bit his name Marlin Tui Palotu defensive tackle out of USC right here he’s with Jay Tufle out of USC as well one of his old buddies his teammates from the Bengals game last year if I’m not mistaken but he has a legitimate shot not only to make this roster but to be somebody that has a legitimate impact on where the Chiefs end up specifically along the defensive tackle spots and the reason I say that is because he’s one of the only guys not named Chris Jones and um you you can quote you can say Mike Dana as well as Mike Panel who can come in and play defensive tackle for the Chiefs and he did so last season in the last two regular season games and what I like about at least him right he’s he’s a bit bigger quote unquote bigger for a defensive tackle he is on that side of 307 lbs 6 6’2 and that’s where you’re going to see him play probably more of a role behind a Chris Jones maybe not necessarily a guy that’s going to play one tech or nose tackle to give you some of that but what I’m wanting to showcase here is more about what he does from a physical standpoint you see he’s kind of a little bit bigger right here he’s playing along the four four eye so the last two games he played I think 13 snaps against the Steelers and the majority of the football game against the Denver Broncos when the backups were in but you’re going to see again there’s a little bit of little more movement skills than I expected to see from him i think he identifies the football pretty well and then you see again it’s that arm over that he does he’s got very good pop when he gets off the football and can actually extend doing some of those things so we know that the Chiefs have kind of a problem to fill at defensive tackle with the loss of Tershan Wharton i know they brought in one of our favorite would have been Chiefs in the draft out of out of Notre Dame Jerry Tiller but there’s going to be a lot more of I guess rundown situation stuff that you’re going to need to see from guys like uh Tui Palotu as well as Fabian Levit from FSU we haven’t seen a lot out of him yet but firstly we’re going to focus on Tui Palotzu just because again there’s not a lot saying I think people kind of forgot that he was even on the roster last year for large portions of the season he was in um inactive for most of the season but right here again you’re going to see when he actually gets hands out and can extend gets off the football keeping those pads down keeping his hips down keeping them underneath him he can extend and actually be physical at the point of attack but you’re seeing what I’m talking about from this alignment standpoint more to the outside shoulder of the guard typically where Chris Jones lines up not really more of a one tech or nose tackle and we’ll get to the reason why here in a second but overall you see what I’m talking about with Tui Palotu how when one in one-on-one situations against the run I think he’s going to be pretty valuable at least as a depth piece i’m not talking about a guy who’s going to come out and be a starter next to Chris Jones that’s going to be Mike Panell right off the bat i still think Omar Norman Lot has a really good shot to be a defensive tackle to to Chris Jones is with his make his buildup but you you see one of the reasons why I’m I’m not really optimistic he can now this is again you’re playing more dime package so you’ve got three defensive tackles down the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to run the football but you see where he’s not able to really stand up to double teams this one is actually kind of a mild example there’s better ones against the Broncos where he just gets moved backward against Quinn Miners and and Mike McGllinchi on the right hand side of that offensive line but he is not a guy who’s going to get put in there he’s trying to kickstand he really is and this is what I’m talking about with the kickstand right here kind of get the trying to get that knee down so he can actually stand up to the the double team that’s coming his way but he’s unable to really do a lot um there was a pretty a pretty good rep here in here against Dan Moore who got a big contract with the Tennessee Titans over the offseason to be more uh and he was actually really really physical right there against in against him against the Steelers but in terms of what he’s going to bring not really a pass rush enthusiast not the best kind of guy for that but he’s going to bring pretty decent de run defense again he’s not a a true starter right now he’s more of a depth piece but someone that can fill in for uh I won’t say fill in for Chris Jones because that’s not what I mean but what I mean more to the extent of putting him on the field in Chris Jones’s situation in that kind of three tech as a run defender now we know Jerry Tiller is going to probably bring some more of that juice as a pass rusher he’s under 300 lb but you do see this is kind of where he wins from a pass rush perspective if he’s going to it’s the inside or the outside back in with that arm over that we talked about even against the run where he finds the football pretty well again pushes the push pull here he’s going to take Quinn Miners push him out of the way and swim over and he’s going to get back through so that’s really more of what he brings to the table not necessarily somebody who’s going to blow everyone away from a pass rusher perspective but he has an opportunity in front of him again because there isn’t really a clear run defensive player next to Chris Jones behind him to be able to do that outside of Mike Panel everyone has an opportunity here to earn their keep and that’s why I’m talking about Fabian Love it as well former FSU player UDFA last year he’s another big player 6’3 316 pounds very physical at the point of attack is not going to be somebody that pass rushes a lot and this is where it’s kind of a camp battle between these these two guys i think Jerry Tiller is going to make the roster i still think Omar Norman Lot is and the Chiefs carry anywhere from four to five defensive tackles and I think that this is a situation where you see five defensive tackles specifically because there’s an opportunity and there’s going to be need for run defense last year the Chiefs had a spike season in terms of run defense and this season right now it looks like they’re going to be trying to find and kind of compile everything they can to put somebody put someone on the field that can help against the run so Tui Palotu and Fabian Love are going to be in a kind of a camp battle for that last defensive tackle spot if they keep five players and I think they have to because Norman L is not someone who even though I think he has the tools to become a good run defender he’s not run now and then Jerry Tiller is not a good run defender he’s just not and we can’t count on Mike Panel playing 100% of the snaps on this team for the next 17 18 games all the way into the postseason it’s unrealistic so this is a quote unquote camp battle right now because those two players are going to be run defense only on the field and to Pelotu again with the experience not for playing for the Eagles for a couple of seasons coming here he played in a couple of games last year and then Fabian Levit who I think has the better raw tools raw physicality to be able to play inside at a one tech be more of a double team take on you know body eater in more of that Derek Naughty mold but he’s big you know 316 pounds he probably be a bit heavier this season but that’s the position right now that I wanted to focus on early on another guy that we are going to talk about here is Wan Morris wan Morris has an opportunity with training camp to actually I’m not saying he’s gonna get cut because I think his inside outside versatility is still a valuable piece especially as a third round player not necessarily someone that was going to come in and be a huge focal point of the offensive line but last year he was basically benched by the Chiefs actually by Patrick Mahomes himself not somebody that I expected to have that type of career trajectory I thought he’d be better at right tackle but again he was forced into left tackle and we saw some of the inadequacies against the run and in pass protection where he’s not a finished product and they had to force him into more playing time so he’s more of a I have an asterisk near Wan Morris’s name on the depth chart not necessarily because I think he’s going to make uh miss the roster but because if we look at the tackle if if Kings Matia actually gets confidence playing guard he’s their swing tackle if you have an injury on left or right he’s going to be in the mix to be a to be kicked out there and play if Wanya Morris comes into training camp and guys like Isa Ethan Driscoll are outplaying him and they’re getting more opportunities than Wa Morris even regardless of his status on the roster with his experience on this offensive line with Patrick Mahomes the the simple fact that Patrick Mahomes said “I don’t want this guy playing in front of me last year.” is really why I’m kind of asterisking him right now because if you do get Ethan Driscoll Isa come out and they play very very well in training camp and in the preseason there is a realistic scenario where Wa Morris is on the outside looking in and he’s more of a practice squad player simply because of the upside of Ple and Driscoll that the Chiefs really do like so there’s a lot that can happen he needs to have a really good training camp and preeason and show that he can play inside outside be that swing tackle be that Cam Irving type player which I think he can be for this Chief’s offensive line so that’s again more of an asterisk asterisk thing mentioning it in in passing um one other position that we are going to talk about uh two more before we head out it first one here is Robert Tanyion who again is a veteran he’s at tight end U with Travis Kelce but he’s the only other Chiefs tight end there which was an interesting thing for me right now what we know is the Chiefs typically like to keep four tight ends if I’m right now Jared Wy is still being held out he’s not a full participant with the recovery from the ACL injury jake Briningto had a sleeve on his right leg during the mandatory mini camp more of a precautionary thing is what I’m told i understand it’s more of a just a soft tissue they don’t want to force it too much but he was doing very well as we know before that showcasing his ball skills and and what he can do down the field in some of these contested catch situations where he’s going to be very valuable but if we look at what the Chiefs like to do Robert Tanyion even though he is a bit of an older player entering his eighth season in the NFL having some injuries himself this tight end position for the Chiefs if we think about it with Travis Kelce Noah Gray and then whoever that third tight end is if we assume it’s going to be Jared Wy or Jake Printing Stool and they keep four Robert Tonan can easily make the roster he he could not only be an easy make it but he could be an impactful player we we we know that the Chiefs love their 13 personnel they want to bring guys out to stretch the field vertically and even though he’s a little bit of an undersized tight end listed at 240 pounds he can be a good blocker he understands leverage using his hands well that’s one of the big things why he played around in the NFC uh North for a while because he was a pretty good run uh blocker run blocker pass protector all those things but he also we know he’s a good he’s a pretty good pass catcher so if we just consider what the Chief’s tight end room looks like in the injury to Jared Wy the unknown there with uh Jake Brennto stool Robert Tanyian does easily have a route and a path to being able to do that not only that but we’ve seen him already starting to work on the connection with Patrick Mahomes Gardenner Menchu in these OTAAS and mandatory mini camp he’s been a heavy target over a lot of those practices especially in the red zone area so that is definitely a player that I think we should be keeping an eye on to possibly make this roster and then be more of an important player in terms of 12 and 13 personnel than I expected at this point coming to this point in the the uh training camp process last guy that we are going to talk about is Taekquin Thornton formerly of the New England Patriots wide receiver and his I think we can kind of rule out most of the other wide receivers it’s gonna probably come down between him and Nico or Miho for that last receiver spot unless somebody completely blows everyone away and is just more and they just bring in they want it more like like Jason Brownley is going to have a chance to do that whether or not we all agree with it Sky Moore is going to have an opportunity to come in and take one of those that last spot as well but I think Taekquin Thornton as well as Nico or Riio are going to be in the running and one of the reasons that I think Taekquin Foron is going to be not only viable to make the roster but might actually do it not just because his return ability but because of the special teams versatility he was play he was practicing at Gunner during OTAAS and in the mandatory mini camp if we remember Joshua Williams was one of the guys cornerback was was doing some of that as well we know the Chiefs like their speed guys on the outside and even though Taekwon Thornton is 6’2 185 pounds soaking wet he can still be a gunner he can be a return man he can bring some special teams assets to you but also we we we know that he’s going to bring some things as a receiver that he only had eight targets last season before being cut by the New England Patriots and again he’s not a great route runner i think that he still doesn’t understand how to deal with press and and know what to do with the jabs in your face sorry we’re going back so some of the clip that it was before uh and to a plot to but you see right there the quarterback does a really nice job of extending at the chest boom and it’s like he doesn’t even understand what to do right takes him an extra second to to realize excuse me that it’s coming and then but then you see the acceleration through catches over the middle field on that slant and then he gets up field so I do think that there’s a realistic possibility we know with speed Andy Reed loves his speed we know he loves having guys that have size and speed on the outside with which Taquan Thornton brings and I think at the end of the day the biggest reason that he’s going to be able to make this roster is because of that long speed the ability to play on the outside and the special teams access that he can bring with this team so this is actually a pretty decent route he’s being covered over top but you see how he turned DJ Reid around not something you see from one of the better corners in the NFL and I like what he did here because you’re going to see again he’s going to extend inside right make that DB turn he’s going to get to that blind spot and then he’s going to attack outside of the corner and then hit the post right there even with the safety there it’s a good route because we see the intentionality with the stem the speed through the stem to get up and right there he attacks that blind spot he turns him around and then he goes right back to the post so I don’t think he’s a great route runner by any stretch i still think you can out physical him because that’s not really his game but overall we know that Andy Reid prefers to have speed guys on the outside in any ways that he can stress safeties downfield I think that he’s going to want to do so so if you can feasibly see a world where if he’s the six Xavier Worthy Rasheed Rice Travis Kelce and Taekwon Thornton are on the field that might strike fear into a lot of guys again I was not high on Taekquin Thornton not in terms of where he was drafted or after that i thought he was closer to like a backend of day three guy speed is important for the Chiefs we know that but at the end of the day the special teams availability that he might have being able to play maybe three different phases on special teams is going to be more of the impact there and again all these guys going back through them you know Tui Palotu and Taekquin Thornton as well as Wa Morris he’s going to have some special teams value more of the uh kicking team possibly but even if not you’ll get him on uh sorry extra point not kicking team extra point stuff like that and punt team if that’s what they want to do but if Fabian Love it and Robert Tonnie and all of these guys are back end of the roster candidates we’re not talking about hugely extensive playing time we’re talking about with a very good training camp these five players really these veterans because they have experience in the league and in some cases on the team and in the offense or defense have a really good shot to make it and be more playmakers in terms or rotational players somebody that can contribute those contributions are needed and we know that special teams is a very highly valued thing for these guys not just end of roster spots but for being able to contribute on that roster if you stick so those five players are guys I’m going to be watching not only with some of the training camp battles in quote unquote where we can really see having some of those but some of the film from Two as well as Taekquon Thornton is just a little glimpse because we don’t have a ton of real information on those guys but hopefully we get to see a little bit more i don’t expect Taekquin Thornton to win out over Ramio but I would not be shocked if he comes in and plays better and can contribute more on special teams than Nico can even though he’s got that experience so I’m going to be interested in that which is not something I thought going into the training camp process so I hope you guys enjoyed this little breakdown of some of the five players that I’m going to have my eye on again not the sexiest names in the world but these end of roster spot guys are really important not just to fill it out but again to be contributors on a team that is consistently trying to win Super Bowls so I hope you guys if you’re new to the channel that you help sub to the channel we can get out to more of those Chiefs fans and don’t forget today’s Thursday i know it’s a little bit weird um my apologies we’ve had some you know lots of stuff going on in the background with we’re going to be moving in the next month so just keep with us try to try to come on through we’ll have more content for you guys and as we ramp up closer and closer to training camp i hope you guys have a great rest of your weekend we will be back on Monday with the Q&A hopefully both Ryan and I will be there but again have a great day and I’ll see you next time
