Noah Penda to Orlando: How the Magic REVOLUTIONIZED Their Draft Approach

no matter who you’re interested in this draft go check out the lockdown podcast network podcast that drafted them great coverage of the draft throughout the network all part of Lockdown Podcast Network your team every day today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to you by Game Time download the Game Time app create an account and use code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase i don’t know how long I’ve sat here covering the draft and told you my guiding philosophy for the NBA draft a philosophy that I don’t always follow when I’m doing the lockdown mock i’m also like Jeff a very naturally conservative person but I’ve always had a guiding philosophy that says this if there is a guy you like if there is a guy that you as an executive are so sure is the one you want is the player you want to draft go get him because frankly draft picks are a lot less valuable than a lot of fans seem to think they are and we’ll get into that conversation here in a minute draft picks are like used cars or like any card actually the moment you use them they lose value once it becomes a real person their value plummets because now you’re dealing with a person instead of the mystery box and so frankly if there’s a player that you really think is going to be that good and I use Donovan Mitchell as the example the Utah Jazz didn’t draft Donovan Mitchell they traded up to get him they made sure they got him san Antonio traded up traded with Indiana to get Kawhi Leonard ultimately yes you have to play the draft you have to play the games but like as much as I’ll make fun of Portland for taking on Young if he’s their guy who cares who cares what anyone else thinks make sure you get the guy that you’re comfortable with now it backfires occasionally jet Howard was picked 11th and I think we’re all still curious about that decision but at the end of the day I didn’t blame the Magic for that because I said in that draft you need to exit this draft with a shooter one way or another jet Howard was on the shooting list he was the shooter they liked more than everyone else whether that evaluation was correct or not they got their guy truly this summer we are seeing a different kind of Jeff Welman clearly this summer we are watching the Magic change their behavior in really important ways in ways that I think a lot of fans have been waiting for the Magic to change their behavior in fact I’ll go ahead and phrase it this way the Magic are finally acting like a winning team they’re finally acting like a team that is going for it and making sure they have the players they want instead of letting the thing come to them they took Jayce Richardson in the first round and at least according to Jeff Welman he was a guy they were looking at at 16 they felt like he fell to them but that also meant a guy they wanted at 25 was not someone they were picking that also meant there were other players the Magic were interested in that they were no longer picking because Jace Richardson was their guy and so as the second round began and that extra time that extra that the extra 24 hours or however many hours to sit with that second round draft order and figure things out allowed for the crazy amount of moves that we saw there was time for everyone to settle in and so the Magic again made their move whether you like this prospect or not and we’re going to get into no appenda here in a minute the Magic identified a player that they like and certainly one that fits the type that we all know the Magic like the Magic identified a player that they like and decided this is a second round pick who cares what it costs second round picks are easy to recoup easy to regain and easy to spend and for the first time the Magic aren’t punting on a second round pick the Magic are aggressively going after first round level talent in the second round something that is becoming more and more important considering the aprons considering all the financial restrictions that are about to descend upon the Magic again we’ll talk about Noah Penda here in a second second mention haven’t talked about the deal yet we’ll talk about Noah Penda in a second and what he brings to the team but there is no doubt the Magic grabbed a second first round level player and got a second round contract with it so here was the deal the Boston Celtics uh apparently and reportedly thwarted in their attempts to get Rashir Fleming by the Phoenix Suns under utter cut undercutting them uh and jumping up to 31 the Boston Celtics traded the 32nd pick to the Orlando Magic for the Magic’s two second round picks that would have been 46 and 57 as well as a 2026 second round pick and a 2027 second round pick the Magic by the way still have nine second round picks over the next seven years they still have four first round picks over the next seven years so the Magic’s draft capital little bit sunk into a little bit they’ve definitely spent a lot of draft capital they still got plenty to work with and again second round picks are easy to refill and if the Magic do need to break some things apart surely they will get some first round picks when they have to make those trades all of this was a clear intention to move up and take no appenda and we’re going to talk about those reasons in a moment but the big point has been and continues to be the renewed aggression that the Orlando Magic are attacking this off season the renewed aggression that says we are going to add valuable talent to this team to make ourselves better and I think without a doubt the Magic are a better team now and we’ve said this and look Desmond Bane’s obviously a bigger impact player than No Penda jace Richardson is potentially a bigger impact more talented player than No Penda too the Magic are not just a better team they have shaped their team for the moment they have shaped their team to be a real contender to fill some gaps to fill some holes while still staying true to their philosophy their values and what they think will help them win in the end this is this is what winning teams do they identify talent they grab it they don’t just target it they grab it and again we’ll get a little bit later on into where the Magic’s roster sits and what comes next and why it might be a little bit more of a conservative free agency than I think a lot of fans want but the Magic the Magic have made a big play here and they have really put the league on notice that a they’re open for talking and open for business but b they are committed to their vision they believe it can be successful and they’re going to go out and make it happen so what does Noah Penda bring to the Magic what can the Magic expect from this young Ford we’re going to get to that coming up here in just a moment but first it’s everybody’s favorite ad read yes I read your comments yes so I’m going to try and do things a little bit differently today but there’s still no denying when I found out Ski was making underwear for men i was intrigued you probably didn’t want to know that that’s probably too much information but I’ve heard so much about the quality from friends and family shayulus Alexander sure looks good in them so I had to give it a try and let me tell you Skiims lives up to the hype we don’t like to talk about underwear clearly by some of the comments when I do these ad reads you don’t like to talk about underwear but we got to talk about underwear because with Skiims the fit the comfort the right style it’s all there it’s all there i was never a briefs person until I tried SKIMS and now I might be a briefs person like literally honestly might be a briefs person their men’s line offers something for everyone from boxer briefs to classic briefs all designed with perfect balance of comfort and style i’ve been hooked on these they are perfect for my active lifestyle or my sitting lifestyle whichever one they move with me never lose their shape and stay in place all day whether I’m working out running errands going to theme parks at at the game whatever they’re the most comfortable and reliable underwear I’ve ever owned that’s enough of that isn’t it shop Skibens atkims.com and you’ll be seeing their praises too let them know we sent you after you place your order select podcast in the survey and select my show Locked On Magic in the drop-own menu that follows thanks for listening once again that’s Ski Men’s.com so ultimately the Magic drafted a player like they gave up four second round picks but they drafted their guy so who is Noah Penda what are the Magic getting in Noah Penda and I promise it will not be a lot of penda puns but uh yeah no penda is a really really interesting prospect from just a like evaluation standpoint let’s get this out of the way uh Sam Vini of the Athletic had no appenda number 21 he’s also in infatuated with multi-positional versatile big you know wings who have long arms all the stuff that Jeff Welman’s very very interested in so Sanvicini admitted I have him probably higher than most people he had him at number 21 most mock drafts I saw had him as kind of a throwaway guy at the end of the 20s at the end of the round but very clearly this is a guy that the consensus is has first round talent i is is first round potential borderline first round draft pick obviously he went 32 and those picks in the early 30s like really feel far more valuable than anything else again why that’s why I’m not concerned about throwing away second round picks the odds of a second round pick hitting are very very small those odds obviously increase the higher up in the draft you are so go get your guy if you’re really convinced about him because frankly the two guys Boston drafted um you know the two guys Boston drafted in this in this second round they’re not going to they probably won’t play more games combined than Noah Penda will and I I’ll I’ll venture to guess even today freezing cold take me later the four guys Boston picks with the Magics four second round picks they sent for Noah Penda they will not play as many games in the NBA combined as Noah Penda will freezing cold take me later on that that’s not a that’s not a prediction that’s a spoiler um Penda is a really interesting prospect though so you know I was a little bit behind on him started watching some tape on him a has all the measurables like that’s let’s get this he is very much the Magic’s type he’s very much the kind of guy the Magic like to go for he has a six he is a measured in at 6 foot 7.25 without shoes at the combine 6′ 11 and a half wingspan it’s not just that he’s tall and long sorry it’s not that just that he has that he’s tall and has a long wingspan he weighs in he weighed in at 241.8 pounds at the combine he is a big dude and if you go watch tape on him a because he’s wearing number 93 which is an odd number he will wear number 93 with the Magic making him the the making that the highest number any Magic player has ever worn assuming he plays in a game you notice him like he is so big that you notice him last year he played uh for Le Man in Fr in France it was his first year in League One it was first year in France’s first division he had a really really uh solid season i wouldn’t say it was fantastic but 10.2 points per game 5.1 rebounds per game and 2.66.9 minutes per game he played at the FIA U20 Euro Basket tournament last summer hit a huge three-pointer won the game in the quarterfinals against Spain france did go on to win the tournament he averaged 11.7 points 8.6 rebounds and three assists per game uh and was named an all-star for the tournament was named an all-star to the tournament so this is a young guy he’s he’s going to be 20 years old this season this is a young guy still kind of putting a lot of the pieces together but the Magic see him as as we all know this is the stuff they love positionally versatile long defensively um smart high basketball IQ good moving off the ball good cutting and slashing to the basket they see him as a potential playmaker they see him being able to do all these things and yeah they probably do see him improving his three-point shot and if there is a knock on this pick it is most likely that he’s not super ready to play he’s probably not NBA ready it’s probably going to take a little bit of time to get him moving and get him going in the right direction he’s about a 30% three-point shooter 69% from the foul line so there are legitimate concerns that this is too much of a long-term play having said that Penda seems like he has the right attitude we spoke to him um in the media room a during the draft after the draft on um on Thursday and the first thing that Penda said is like I’m really excited to defend like like like he seems to get where his value is and obviously for young players with this Magic team especially your competitiveness your ability to defend that goes a long way like that’s how you make your mark on this team they they’ll fill in the other skills and and everything else but the way you make your mark on this team is you defend you get after it you you hustle you you know you bustle you do all that stuff and so at the very least Penda fits that penda is gonna do that now a lot of speculation among fans that Noah Penda was sort of drafted to be a Jonathan Isaac replacement and you know I I have certainly been speculating a little bit about Jonathan Isaac’s future with this team and and and just kind of crunching the numbers and we’ll crunch some numbers here in a minute there i don’t think there’s anything to that this year but certainly over the course of this contract that could very well be where the Magic are going according to at least some statistics opponents shot less than 30% with Penda as their primary defender last year in France now the French league is pretty good it’s not like the ACB League in Spain it this team didn’t play in Euro League so it’s it we I don’t know how it’s not it’s not the Chinese League obviously um it it it’s it’s a good league so the fact that Penda is able to produce that in a good pro league is a good thing um I think I forget who I think it was Noah Assam also played in France played for um played for one of the team one of the smaller teams there obviously not like PSG or anything like that um so so Penda Penda is a really talented player he is a defense first player and that’s going to give him an opportunity to get on the floor again will I give this this this pick an A+ no i would give it a solid B i get the upside play he obviously checks a lot of boxes for the Magic he fits their personality and identity but he’s not going to help them immediately and I think that’s sort of where the Magic are at right now i just I’ve been under the impression or I’ve been under the assumption and this is why I didn’t really prepare for Penda that the Orlando Magic needs shooters and that they shouldn’t take guys who can’t shoot um not that I don’t think Penda can develop into a shooter but he hasn’t shown it consistently now you go watch highlight tapes of him his shot looks pretty good it may just be about consistency and repetition with him and he’ll blow up um he definitely has something there and undoubtedly this is a really really talented kid this is a really really talented player the Magic again if talent wins out in the end Orlando got a talented player that they can slot into the lineup and use the way that they want to use him extra defender next to Paulo done exable defender next to France done jonathan Isaac misses a game because he sprained his ankle no appenda gives you at least some of the same things you hope this is this is a good pick in that sense it sticks to the Magic’s identity and DNA and and you know Jeff Welman used that term he said he’s got a lot of our DNA in him and again just talking to him he seems eager to defend finding young guys who want to defend who are excited about defense the Magic aren’t passing up on that and so I get why the Magic pursued this guy i get why this is the this was the player they targeted this the player they wanted to spend assets to get but now he has to find his fit and that is the next problem because the Magic entering free agency have a roster crunch we’ll talk a little bit about those restrictions coming up here in just a moment but first today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at Game Time have you ever decided at the last minute to head to a ball game with friends or family or even a show maybe it’s 9:00 about three hours so probably about two hours by the time you listen to this or they’ll already have talked by the time you listen to this and now we turn our attention to free agency and I’ll dive a little bit deeper into free agency uh on on Monday’s episode we’ll have the news about Mo Vagner the news about Caleb Houston uh and their contract status i would anticipate and it certainly sounds like the Magic have already declined those team options of if I’m reading between the lines correctly um that’s all mechanical that’s nothing to worry about i still expect both honestly to be back with the Magic but it is a mechanical thing for the cap but obviously the Magics still have work to do the Magics still have things that they need to accomplish and must accomplish to complete this roster and We’re at a point where there is very very little space to do that now we have talked a lot on this show about the cap crunch that the Magic are facing and why I think the Magic are ultimately going to use the taxpayer mid-level exception not the non-T taxpayer mid-level exception if my back of napkin math is correct if the Magic Decline team options for Mo Vagner and Caleb Houston they will be $18 million under the first apron and about 10 to 11 million under the tax line the only way that they get access to the non-t taxpayer middle level exception is by declining the two options and frankly I had someone ask me this like why do the Magic have to decline Mov’s team option the only way they get access to the taxpayer mid-level exception is by declining Movagner’s team option as well um Caleb Houston’s salary does not do it it’s Mo Vager’s $11 million that frees up the ability to use the taxpayer middle exception there’s cap mechanics involved in this where you know you’re using bird rights to sign Mo and Caleb um you know that the the mid-level exceptions you have access to them um depending on what happens after you sign them you can’t go over the first apron using the mid-level exception um in either case and obviously with the non- taxpayer mid-level exception uh contract or set of contracts worth up to $14 million you can’t you’re hardcapped at the first apron if you do that reminder the Magic are hardcapped already at the second apron because they’ve aggregated players in a trade um so get all that cap stuff out of the way so the Magic have about $18 million technic you know in a sense to spend three million of that goes to Jay Richardson so you’re down to 15 uh about 2 million let’s just say 2 million for shorthand math goes to no appended now assuming he’s on the roster it does not sound like the Magic are going to put him on a 2-way he’s going to be on the roster that gets you down to 13 million already then the Magic cannot use the full non- taxpayer middle-le exception so Nel Alexander Walker that idea with how much competition there’s going to be to sign him throw that out he’s getting the full mid-level the Magic are not getting Nel Alexander Walker again that’s now $13 million you have to spend on everybody on three roster spots because while we’ll talk about specific players and targets and again why I think the Magic will use the taxpayer mid-level exception about $5 million $5 million contract the reality is this the Magic don’t have room anymore as things stand the Orlando Magic have 10 players under contract jaylen Suggs Desmond Bane Paulo Banero Fran Vagner Wendell Carter Anthony Black Jet Howard Tristan Dilva Goabatz Jonathan Isaac that’s 10 jace Richardson is 11 noah Pend is 12 you can have maximum 15 plus or three two-way players ethan Thompson’s one of the two-way players magic will probably keep their two-way spots open to see what Cheeks Free and Summerland um that’s just Jeff Welman’s philosophy that’s why you didn’t see the busy action that that a lot of teams do after the draft ends that’s not what the Magic do they got their guys coming in for summer league they’ll look at their summer league roster they’ll look around they’ll they’ll they’ll make two-way decisions here in toward the end of the summer um and they’ll probably only do one more they’ll they’ll keep a spot open which I don’t love but I you know that’s not something I like to argue it’s it’s it’s pointless to argue it it’s not important um but essentially the Magic have 14 players under contract if they’re going to resign Mo Vagner and Caleb Houston and again I really expect them to do this caleb Houston gives them another solid wing depth and Mo Vagner is obviously super duper important for a lot of reasons so it’s not just that they have this money crunch because Boager is going to get a salary of at least $10 million so if you’re going to be cap hard capped at the first apron and you have you know 14 million$13 million spend 10 goes to Mo two goes to Caleb and you sign them after you use a tax pyramid level exception of $5 million you’re a first April team congratulations everybody the Magic our first apron team um that’s the reality that’s the reality of all this and the Magic have if they’re going to resign those two players just that one roster spot to fill in free agency that makes figuring out free agency a little bit easier because then we can say okay who’s worth the tax pyramid level exception like what are the options there and there are some options you know if the Magic won another guard Tyus Jones is there um I’ve been kind of advocating or playing around with you know if you trade Goa Batadz go sign Paul Reed to a minimum does you know is does a lot of the same things um maybe Paul Reed is the option if you’re trading Goabat it does smell a little bit like the Magic might have one more trade in them that if the Lakers strike out on all their centers and they turn to the Magic say “What do you want for Gogat?” find a way to make that happen and that frees up some wiggle room maybe some financial wiggle room to actually get something done but once the Magic sign all these players and their first apron team it gets tough to do anything it’s not as tough as it will be next season but it gets tough to do anything and so kind of the cost of signing a second round pick now is you’ve given up a roster spot you’ve given up a little bit of flexibility and there’s no working around it and so yes I I I agree the Magic signaling this aggression the Magic being willing to put assets in to get the player that they want even if he’s not a win now player this is a clear sign the Magic are going for it the Magic are are being aggressive to shape and create the roster that they want but it also comes with this downside there isn’t a lot of space left for anyone else and with a lot of the uncertainty the Magic are facing this summer and frankly I’ll go ahead and say this today but the way the Magic are capped out they must resign Moagner they must resign Caleb Houston they can’t afford to lose either of those players if you like them enough maybe you maybe you don’t like them maybe you don’t like Caleb i think Caleb showed a lot of really good signs from everything I’ve heard he has been living in the gym all summer long at at the Avat Health Training Center i don’t think the Magic given up on him i think the Magic want him back three you know whatever it is three years 9 million three years 11 whatever it is i think they bring him back i think they bring Mo back on something like a a threeyear threeyear like $30 million contract just you know three years like 32 million like something like something like that um I think they take care of him give him another you know team option on the third year as always i think they take care of him i think they want to take care of him it’s just cap mechanics that create this uncertainty but now you have a roster crunch creating uncertainty too and Orlando has to be precise they don’t have room to make mistakes with the stakes that they’re playing for now and so we’ll see what the Magic ultimately do and we’ll dive into that Sunday afternoon to get ready for free agency on Monday but that’s going to do it for me today i want to thank you all again for The Orlando Magic made another bold move and shook up the NBA Draft, trading up to take Noah Penda in the second round. The move may not be the one that propels the team into contention but the aggression to get their player is a certain sign the team is going for it.
Penda is a versatile wing that fits the Magic’s DNA. It is clear why they identified him as a trade-up option. He is someone who can contribute on the defensive end and wants to add on that end.
The Magic have added a key player. But now their roster is incredibly tight as they enter free agency.

What is the front office seeing? Looks like Andrew Nicholson 2.0
I don't understand this Penda pick, especially over Raynaud. He looks like another wing who can't shoot. I guess this is a trust in Jeff Weltman move
He's coming in to play defense. I believe that there are more moves to be made. Way too many non shooters on that second unit.
so damn disappointed in Franz deciding to play Eurobasket this summer instead of working on his game, fixing his shot, resting, and not putting himself at risk for more injuries. kinda worrisome that he isn't prioritizing all of that
(esp when he just came off a huge injury, plus the fact that Magic are in "Win now" mode.)
I wonder if Penda gives the ability to trade Issac…Doubt it happens but it did run across my mind.
Mr Rossman we all know that we are trading Issac and Jett Howard hopefully before Monday
Did Phillip just “silly rabbit” us?!?
